Season 4 was mapped out and ready to go after season 3 wrapped, then Disney decided they needed a Mando movie, so Favreau and Filoni  took the overall story arc of Season 4 and turned it into the script for the movie instead.

Season 4 isn't happening in that form anyway. I would assume if the movie is a success it will get movie sequels rather than more TV seasons, and if it isn't successful it will just be put aside.

I'm really worried a Mandalorian movie is going to kill this story line.  There have been just as many really stupid episodes as there have been really good episodes.  I hope they're really on their A game for this movie as I think expectations are far higher for a movie than a 10 part D+ series where it can meander a bit and survive a handful of nonsensical episodes.

I maintain that what killed the Mandalorian storyline was the forced decision to bring Grogu back after the end of season 2.  It was a perfect ending to his story, and they should have found a new quest for Mando to go off and get himself into.  Instead it ended up being a hot mess of generalized Mandalorian storyline stuff that felt too local to encompass such a big story, with Grogu as a cute prop.

Someone panicked at the thought of Grogu being done with, and screwed it all up.
