Thanks for the link Nakatu!  This is great news, all the figures shown look great I think, and the announcements are a nice surprise as well!  Personally, I've always hoped they would make a new Lando in Skiff Disguise, and all of the other Jabba's aliens announced sound great.  2004 is shaping up to be a great year, don't you think? :)

I am sooooo happy about these announcements!  I can't believe we are going to get J'Quille, Elom, and Bubo finally!  I just wish Hermi Odle was in the mix but this will work for me.  Can't wait to see the pics next month.

I never thought they would make that thing hanging from Jabba's ceiling or whatever it's on.  I am interested to see what the B'omarr Monk will look like.

Overall I am stoked :)

Shawda Ubb (Rappertunnie) is going to be a single carded fig?  Seems small to me.

Just wanted to point out...

2. Vintage Klaatu
5. Hermi Odle
6. Skiff Nikto
7. Yarna d'al' Gargan
8. Weequay Skiff Master
9. J'Quille
10. Sgt Doallyn

This is my Jabba's Palace Portion of my top 10 ROTJ list...I really think they could do another Jabba's Wave later in the year with Weequay, Yarna, Doallyn and Hermi and have another Klaatu/Barada/Nikto Screen scene with alternatives to the original troika

Can't wait to see pics of the rest.  If they're anywhere near as good as the Luke, R2 and R1, then next year is shaping up to be great.

I totally agree with this.  I have been wanting a really good Luke for a long time, specifically in his Jedi garb.  That version has always been my favorite.  I personally think the face sculpt on this Luke figure looks fantastic, and easily the best we've seen.  Lots of great figures next year...and lots of Lukes by the looks of things...Hoth Luke, Jedi Luke, Hologram Luke :).

Hopefully they get the scale correct on the R1 droid.  IIRC, the essential guide to droids has it slightly taller than a protocol droid.

Indeed it does.

I've been wanting a really clean, well-articulated Artoo for a long, long time--something like the R2-Q5, only with an Artoo paint job--and this looks like it could be it.

We'll have to wait and see what it looks like without the serving tray (i.e. if there's a hole in the dome).  If there's not, and this is just a normal Artoo with the serving tray attached on, this is easily going to be the best Artoo they've ever done.

The Luke looks fantastic too, of course--I just wish they would have also shown it without the cloak on, like the pic from Wizard World.

Cool stuff.

As we speak there are 26 figures planned from now through the Jabba Wave in March '04

Left Over EpII Figures and others
October-Novemeber 2003
Achk Med-Beq (Episode II)
Padme Amidala (Tatooine Episode II)
McQuarrie Stormtrooper (Fan's Choice #4)
Bail Organa (Episode II)
Imperial Dignitary #1 (Episode VI)
Imperial Dignitary #2 (Episode VI)
Ayy Vida (Nightclub Episode II)
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Nightclub Episode II)
Elan Sleazebaggano (Nightclub Episode II)

Hoth
November-December 2003 (first wave of '04)
Luke Skywalker (Saga Hoth)
R-3PO
Hoth Rebel Soldier (Battle of Hoth)
General Rieekan (Episode V)
Wampa

Tatooine
December-January 2004
Luke Skywalker (Jabba's Palace, Episode VI)
R1-G4
R2-D2 (bartender)
C-3PO (Escape Pod)

Jabba's Palace
January-February 2004
Elom
J'Quille
Jabba the Hutt
B'omarr Monk
Rappertunie
Bubo
Luke Skywalker (Hologram)
Wol Cabbashite

Battle of Yavin
February-March 2004
General Dodonna
Captain Antilles

Star Destroyer
March-April 2004
Dengar

With 4-8 figures per wave we are looking as many as 9 more jsut through May and that gives a total of 35.

Add to that fact that H has said there will be a Wave per month in '04 we may be seeing over 70 new figures next year.  That is more than what they put out in a movie year!  Amazing!

The only thing I can say disappointed me about this news is no Hermi Odle, who was the one Jabba's Palace character I truly was interested in.

Not that the others are BAD announcements.  They'll be great additions to the gang of uglies already produced.  I just wanted Hermi Odle more than anything else from JP.

The pictures shown are amazing, though I'd like to have seen Luke without the cloak too (I love the cloth cloak by the way!  FINALLY some Soft Goods stuff so our figures can be posed!), but it's looking nice even with the cloak on.

Nice touch on the blaster too.  I wonder if we'll get a Gammorean with working holster some day?  Wouldn't that be a dandy extra to put the blaster in, and recreate the scene all together?

The R2's definitely got signs of greatness.  The 3rd ankle appears articulated as do his outer ankles, which is a good sign (His just having a retractible 3rd leg is a good sign).  My worries lie in the tray and serving spout.  What's left on his dome if the spout is removeable?  And does the tray come off even (If it does that's a really tight fit).  If there's only a tiny pinhole on top of his dome, and the tray removes then I agree that this could very well be the finest R2 ever.

It would be the R2 that the Flying Saga R2 SHOULD have been, with removeable accessories and a heavily articulated astromech body underneath.  We'll just have to wait and see if Hasbro thought this figure out properly.

The R1 droid, tied with Luke, was the highlight image to me...  I've seen Luke before so I wasn't so gaga over that, but that R1 is just sweet.  I wonder if it'll be a single carded figure or what he could come with?  Kind of bland for an individual figure just the way they've been packaging things of late.  Still, it's a new droid that looks amazing.

Isn't it ironic that we'll get an R1 droid before we received a decent R5-D4 figure?

I would've never predicted that one personally.

And the list of figures was just great!  A truly "A list" of characters I think that MANY collectors wanted (Even if my Hermi wasn't on it).  Bubo's probably my favorite announcement cuz he bites at people, but the whiphid iisn't a bad choice either, and just the # of people who've made a custom of him s hould warrant Hasbro to make an "official" one.

Now I hope next time they go to the skiffs and crank out some new goons, and Hermi Odle of course from the palace.  The skiffs could use some "new" guys though, like Sgt. Doalynn, a Human guard, the cackling Nikto, Weequay Skiffmaster, etc...

A couple of nit-picky thoughts I came up with as I read the news:

J'Quille

Elom

Looks to me like we might be seeing a bit of parts sharing between these two figures. A simple head-swap and different deco would suit these two. Especially with all the figures planned for their wave...

Tatooine wave has three figures, which means four per case (and leaves R2 and R1 to duke it out for the pegwarmer of the bunch). Palace wave has five, so the ratio there will be screwed up. I'll guess three each of Lando and Shawda Ubb, plus two each of J'Quille, Elom, and Luke. They could really mix it up by making Luke a one-per or J'Quille and Elom replace one another as a running change.

For my money, I'll bet the B'omarr Monk will be a straight rehash of the exclusive version, so now I have to decide if a wall monster and Bubo are worth ten bucks. That was a deluxe set I didn't see coming, and just proves that assortment is wide-open now.

Holographic Luke sounds really cool to me...the best surprise yet. And it's great to see the fantastic job done on the R1. I'm looking forward to searching for all of these!

I'm pretty happy with the announcements.  Some decent holes in the OT creatures and characters are finally getting filled with the 2004 line.  How they come out is certainly a concern, but the way the line has improved over the past three years gives me hope that they'll be decent.

As for some things not making the list?  I think you still need to chock it up to patience.  Some items need to be held for some measure of time just to maintain interest in the line as it moves forward.  I think we'll eventually get characters like Hermi Odle, and Hem Dazon, etc.  It seems more like a matter of when, rather than if.

I'm really happy with the announcements, even if I am slightly surprised/disappointed not to see Hermie, but he's inevitable.  R1 and R2 look fantastic.  I'm so happy with those, and Luke, too.  J'Quille!   ;D  Next year looks to be fantastic.

Holy!  :o [spicolli]That's awesome! Totally awesome![/spicolli]

Now that's a complete quality turnaround from Hasbro, in what, less than a year? We went from action features mutilating core character resculpts to figures of highly collector oriented characters that could possibly exceed the best of the POTJ era. Amazing.

This makes me really excited about the hobby again, and believe me, it was needed.

Sidethought - It also puts into perspective the new Jabba - its obvious Hasbro is trying to offer a lot of bang for the buck in the Deluxe line (Ultra now?) by putting as much diversity into it as possible, while keeping the assortments retailers have to order to a minimum. They can do beasts on that card, figure 2-packs, or even figures with vehicles. It's really smart, but still a shame, since a really, really good Jabba absolutely requires a Deluxe Beast assortment scale pricepoint to be what we really want. But I get what they're trying to do.

'04 is looking just dandy. Couldn't be happier with the pics or the announced figs. :)

Exciting is not the word!!!!  Wow !!! 2004 is going to great year for us
collectors.  The recent pictures are great and I am HAPPY ;D that
Hasbro went ahead and posted some new images. Still holding
out hope for the rumor Bib Fortuna and Hermie Olde.  I know that
the premilary draWING WAS DONE FOR THIS FIGURES!!!!   This
may be a part of some the new Sceen Sceens for 2004!!! Remember
that Jimmy said they had these on the internal lists and that
they were tossing around a few ideas on how they were going to
add Hermie to mix!!!!  So lets have HOPe that we will see for
2004 a Screen Sceen that will included Hermie Olde, Bib Fortuna,
Ephant Mon.    Also the Hem Dazon could be very well apart
of this new mix-Baniss Keogg,Hem Dazon, and Bom Vimdin!!!!
Jimmy have you heard any more of this possibilities!!!!!!!!!!

The Luke looks fantastic too, of course--I just wish they would have also shown it without the cloak on, like the pic from Wizard World.

Cool stuff.

Virex... You actually collect Star Wars figures?  I didn't know that!  Thought I was in the wrong section for a minute when I saw your name there...   :P

I've gotta say that these figures and the rest of the new figure announcements are just superb!  Almost make up for the lack of "girthiness" in a certain upcoming slug...   :-\  I would've loved to have seen Hermi Odle and Yarna thrown into the mix, but I'm most certain that they're coming down the pipeline at some point, so I guess I can be patient until they're finally confirmed as well.

The R1 droid is fantastic.  I just hope they've added a little bit of extra heighth to it to get it to scale.  He sure would look snazzy in front of a Sandcrawler now, wouldn't he?!   :-*  I'd still love to see that "spider" Treadwell Droid, the LIN Mining Droid, and a revamped R5-D4, but this is a great start to the scene, especially with such an obscure, well done, and ALL-NEW droid.   8)

Nice to see R2 finally get his long overdue Bartender treatment.  I agree with you guys, that hopefully his tray is removable and leaves a very nice astromech beneath it.  I've got to assume there's a little pin-hole attachment at some particular point to hold the tray in place.  BTW, are those the drink cups all around the tray, painted in gold still?  That's not correct, is it?  Hopefully that'll change before it's release...

Luke's obviously awesome.  'Nuff said on that one.

As for the remaining figures announced, just seeing Wol Cabbashite in the mix there is certifiable proof that not a single character or thing from the Star Wars universe is off limits to Hasbro now.  That's a GREAT thing!!!  Now where's Scott's ICMG?!   :-*  I'm sure it'll be nice for some of the newer collectors to get their hands on the formerly exclusive Monk from long ago, so that's a worthy choice for a re-release.  Bubo's cool, and is certainly someone who's been asked for quite frequently (usually as a pack-in).  Good chance this "Ultra" (Deluxe) 3-pack will come with an archway/door of some type to attach Wol to, so that'll be very cool if it comes to fruition.

Elom and J'Quille will make nice additions to the larger thug contingent at the Palace.  I'm a little concerned over the part sharing with these two as well, especially since Scott (I believe) pointed out somewhere that one of them's 6'6" and the other's only 5'.  Hopefully Hasbro will pick up on that disparity.  Skiff Lando?  I guess.  Hopefully he's all new, and even nicer than the previous one from many years ago.  Holo Luke will be interesting, and I guess pretty cool.  Again, I believe his holograph in ROTJ was WAY high/tall, so hopefully Hasbro picks up on that.

Can't wait to see pictures of these other guys next month!  2004 is shaping up to be possible the best year ever, or at least one that rivals that latter half of POTJ!   8)  Now scoop me some more new announcements!  Now that I've got the taste in my mouth, I'm getting greedy!

Virex... You actually collect Star Wars figures?  I didn't know that!  Thought I was in the wrong section for a minute when I saw your name there...   :P

Yeah, well, it's not something I'm proud of.   8)  (And, if you'll remember, I did post here a few weeks ago, asking you about the Star Tours figures. . .)

I've been collecting for years, and I've got a whole roomful of junk, but I've cut down on my collecting drastically this year (haven't bought anything since January).  I still like to hang out on the collecting boards, though, since I like the community, and it also allows me to keep tabs on what's out, what's coming out, and what's going on with the new movie.

Normally, I don't have much to add, because most of the time, someone else has already said what I would have said.  However, I'm a big Artoo fan, and this time, I was excited about seeing this new figure--which looks like it could very well be the best Artoo to date--unless, of course, the integrity of the dome and legs is compromised.   :D

(This one, in terms of scale and detail, kicks the crap out of the 1999 Holo Leia Artoo, which a lot of people think is the best Artoo out there.  In terms of articulation, it is, but it's vastly undersized, and the dome is awful.)

Anyway, I've already revealed more than I planned, so back to Secret Lurking Mode!   :-X

What a wonderful bit of news from the big H the other day!  The 3 previewed figures look fantastic, and the announcement of most of the new ones are just great!  Looks like the sky's the limit with the background characters now, as evidenced by a couple of Hasbro's figure selections here.  That's definitely great to see.  Now I'm more anxious than ever to find out the rest of the goodies for next year's line!  Looks like it's going to be an amazing year for us classic trilogy collectors.  8)

Well, the drink tray is removable from Artoo, as I hoped, but it looks like the little top-of-the-dome thing may be permanently stuck in the upright position, as I feared.  Hopefully not, but that's what it looks like from the cardback.

Other than that, it looks great--that little thing may keep it from being the perfect Artoo figure ever made.  Oh well--probably an easy enough custom job.

Luke looks great, too, and so does the R1 droid, if not a little boring.

These look excellent.  I can't complain one bit.

About  R1's scale, it looks like he takes up the entire bubble top to bottem. (Look at the Jedi Luke, you can see his feet in the bubble.) That alone would make the droid very tall.

Maybe I'm just being picky, but the only thing I really have an issue with is the R2 tray.  Instead of the gold paint for the cups R2 is carrying, I'd like to see clear cups with possibly the red & blue tint that Lt. Danl and the Ack Med Cantina figures come with, but smaller, like in the picture on the back of the card.

That's not that nitpicky IMO Pat!  I agree 100%, and this was something that really bothered me about the first loose shots we saw of this figure.  I thought it would be corrected on the final product, but that unfortunately appears to not be the case.

Considering the bar top feature is what makes this R2 figure unique from the rest, I figured Hasbro would go the extra mile to make this accessory as accurate as possible, but they've really missed the boat by making the tray and the glasses "all one".  Very poor job there.  Especially in light of the great glasses we've gotten with the three Outlandar Club figures.  I suppose it's a pretty easy custom to lop them all off, and swap them with better ones, but we shouldn't have to do that...   >:(

And Virex has a pretty valid concern as well, with that top piece sticking out of R2's head.  Hopefully that's not in a dedicated position, and can be lowered/removed so this R2 can serve other purposes.

Mikey already pointed out my final point of contention with this wave, that being the apparent underscaling in the R1-G4 droid, as we all had feared would happen.  I don't think it goes to the bottom of the bubble either, since you can see the beginnings of the base portion of it in that bubble.  Perhaps it'll be a little taller than the standard figures, but probably not much.  Bummer.  But don't get me wrong, it is still a great looking figure.  The rest of the detail and accuracy is absolutely top notch on it!

Luke of course looks excellent as well.  Just hope it's a good fabric used on the cloth, so it actually "drapes" for once, rather than looking like the usual big stiff and poofy cloth outfit Hasbro usually puts out...

I agree with everyone's nitpicks, but for the most part these look great.  Luke reminds me so much of the day I bought the vintage Jedi Luke, his body entirely wrapped up in his cloak.  Cool.

I am excited by these for sure.  Jedi Luke is one of those figures that I have wanted a re-do on since the SOTE days.  Until this one, the Vintage was still a superior figure.  I also like the soft cloak.  The Molded Cloaks just never really looked right to me.  I know other people like em, but ever since the POTJ Lando, I've been hoping they'd do more.

I don't know if I'd call R1 boring, I mean, it IS a figure of a character that has not seen plastic yet.  I realize he doesn't do much..but I do plan to get at least 2.

I like the R2-D2 too. I haven't thought about it enough to know if I am disappointed about the lack of colored plastic in the cups, but I would have expected just like you guys did that that would be the case.

Oh well.  Instead of just wanting one figure per wave, like this year, it looks like I can finally buy cases online and not get stuck with a bunch of useless (to me at least) figures.

Well, this probably isn't the right forum section to ask, but since we are on the subject of R2 drinks on his drink tray, I have a customizing question.  I am VERY new to customizing.  I just tried a "simple" head swap for a custom to compete in the artoosnews.com's SH4 constest (won 8th place).  I had to trim & trim the knob under the neck to get the head back in the hole.  I didn't have that big of an issue pulling it out, but I could not get it back in.

Anyway,  with painting, which I have never attempted and would be nervous on something with such small detail.   I think I would like to keep the current "cups" on since I think it would be a night mare to try to keep them balanced on the tray.  I don't know if a small drill bit could hallow out the top of a cup, but I'd like to try that.  But then what paint... grey/white? to paint the top of the cup with the appropriate drink color at the bottom of the cup.  Anyone ever customize something with this small of detail?  Would it be worth it?

first off, this an awesome wave of figures, the luke just blows my mind away, I'll definitely be buying several of those, assuming I can find them...

Well headswaps can be tricky when talking about putting a head whose neck peg is larger than the hole you're trying to insert it in. Sounds like the case here and your solution was the right way to go.  I don't know whether or not you used the time honored "boil and pop" method for removing the head, but you can actually use it again to put the head back on.

I didn't notice if the cups were removable or not, but a simple dab of glue would obviously keep them on permanently. A very small drill bit probably would do the trick in hollowing out the cup. About painting in small details, it just takes time and practice, especially when it comes to R2 units, they're a tricky lot. :)

Might I suggest checking out the always fabulous FFURG (http://www.ffurg.com) for all your customizing question needs.  ;) Of course also hit the customizing section here at JD where you can pick the brain of many of us customizers.

Thanks Corran...

I've checked out FFURG for a couple of years and always "planned" to do a few customs, but never did until the contest.   I did do the boil & pop method, but I guess the neck peg was larger on the 2nd figure.

Anyway, I think this is definitely a case where I'll buy multiple figures for the purpose of trying to modify the glasses on his tray.  The cups look like they are just molded bumps on the tray, all covered in that gold paint, so I doubt they are removable.   But, I guess another idea would be to lop them off and glue some cups from the cantina sets that are warming Walmarts pegs.

Yeah, this is a dandy trio of figures in my opinion also.

-Luke Jedi...  ShabbyBlue over at GH.com is claiming he has ball/socket shoulders and knee articulation on top of the bicep swivels, wrists (possibly) and the standard other joints...  If this is true, then this Luke will be one of the finest figures Hasbro ever made, period.

I'm not so sure that I'm seeing that ball/socket shoulder and knee articulation though, so I'll not be surprised if it isn't there.  I just can't tell by the photos myself.  Either way though, this Luke is shaping up to be GREAT custom fodder on top of being a simply grand figure.  Glad I held off on ever making a Yun the Dark Youth from Jedi Knight now that this new Jedi Luke sculpt is coming.  :)

-R1 unit...  New droid, nuff said...  But I'll say some more anyway.  Its scale has been brought into question, but really it's not that big a droid (I think its being in shots with Jawas has mislead some to believe it's really tall).  I'm happy to nab a few of this for customizing.  They're regular on large starships I hear, so repaints may be in order for this one...  Yes, I can turn even R1-G4 into an army builder of sorts. :)

-Bar2-D2...  This is the last R2-D2 variation I ever really wanted to see, and finally it's here.  If all his crap pops off him he'll even be a good customizing figure I believe, but if not he'll serve his purpose (get it "serve", haha...  I'm sorta funny) as the Bartender R2 we all want...

If he were truly "perfect" though then all his gadgets would remove easily and show no real signs other than maybe a pinhole in the top of his dome, and he'd have the articulated 3 legs that the good astromech sculpts all have.

And last he'd have an opening slot in his dome with Luke's Lightsabre hilt able to fit in it, conceiled perfectly.

I'm not expecting all that of course, but if it were perfect that's what it would have. :)

So this is indeed a nice wave coming up.  I can't wait to see these on shelves, but at this point I'm hoping to just see ANY Saga figures on shelves.  It's all Clone Wars around me right now and very little Saga is shipping.  I've yet to see the new Emperor wave, and all that jive...  Hmmm, hope I'm not gonna have to go begging for help on some of this stuff!

Don't know if this has been readdressed yet or not... just saw the pics today.

Anyway, at gh.com's pre-view/pictures of this wave, it looks like the thingy on top or R2's head IS removable:

Yep.  Meant to point this out last week, but GH has a shot of the R1-G4 droid with a Jawa figure.  Doesn't look to be too terribly tall unfortunately.  Probably just a tad above the rest of the average figures would be my guess.   :-\

Nice to see the thing pops off of R2's noggin.  Not sure what's left when it's not there though, since there's no shot from above.  There's obviously going to be a small hole for the peg to fit in for starters.  Not sure if the blue portion of the top of the domw will remain though, since that's on the piece that's removable...

Yeah, you're right Scott!  Based on that shot (that I've never seen), it looks pretty close to the right heighth.  Doesn't look quite as tall in that picture, as it does when seen in the droid lineup in front of the Sandcrawler.  Cool!  Thanks for the info and anxiety relief bud...   :-*

These 3 are certainly on my must have list with others of course.  Luke is just to awesome not to pick up.  Same for R1-G4.  I have to have R2-D2 with the drink tray.  It's mandatory!

I'm a big Artoo fan, and this time, I was excited about seeing this new figure--which looks like it could very well be the best Artoo to date--unless, of course, the integrity of the dome and legs is compromised.   :D

(This one, in terms of scale and detail, kicks the crap out of the 1999 Holo Leia Artoo, which a lot of people think is the best Artoo out there.  In terms of articulation, it is, but it's vastly undersized, and the dome is awful.)

Sorry to bump an old thread here, guys, but I just wanted to say that I finally found the new Artoo (and Luke) yesterday (and R1-G4 a few days before), and after opening up the Artoo, it is most definitely the finest Artoo ever done in the 3 3/4" scale.

Not even really talking about the bartending equipment (which I don't care for too much), but just as a clean, basic Artoo-Detoo figure, it rocks.  Great dome (with the only imperfection being the tiny pinhole in the top for the drink mixer), great paint job, no odd-looking "light-up eye port", and finally, an Artoo figure with the prototypical astromech body and legs that we first saw with the R2-Q5 figure three years ago.  Great looks, great functionality.  Pretty much the ultimate Artoo figure that looks great for display, no matter which movie diorama you put him in.

(And yes, it absolutely kicks the crap out of the Holo Leia Artoo from 1999--mostly in terms of looks and size.  The functionality/articulation is pretty much the same, but that Holo Artoo is waaaay off.  I think the people that think it's so great are probably people that have left it carded, and haven't opened it up to play with it/compare it to some of the other Artoo figures. . .)

Anyway, as a big Artoo fan, I'm very impressed with this new one.  Will I still buy any other new Artoo they come out with?  Sure, because like I said, I'm a big fan, but this is fantastic (nevermind that they should have done it two or three years ago).

And yeah, like Jesse mentioned, I'd still like to see an Artoo like this sometime, that's all done up with all of the attachments (like the sensorscope and the tools, etc.--like the one from 1998) but even then, it wouldn't look as clean as this one does.

Took some pics of this wave last night for some stuff we are working on here and I can't say enough how much I love this wave!  It really is one of the best ones to ever come out Hasbro in my mind.  I love R1-G4, Jedi Luke (except for his stoopid right hand) is great and the R2 is probably the best ever.  Great set of three figures, too bad they stopped the theme stuff in July :-\
