Title: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 2
Post by: Jeff on September 4, 2015, 02:29 AM
Not online yet, but it sounds like Wave 2 will be:

- ANH Princess Leia (Yavin Ceremony)
- TFA First Order Stormtrooper
- TFA Kylo Ren

You can kinda see a preview of Kylo in this pic from Yakface's Facebook page (middle right or photo).  You'll see there appears to be a 3.75" Rey figure in there too... not sure if she'll end up in this wave or Wave 3.

I'm not on Facebook. Where did Yak Face get this image from? The stuff on the shelf are the Disney die-cast figures, right?

^I think it was a twitter post from a CNBC reporter that was doing a story on Force Friday. The full image was of her standing in a room filled will all kinds of TFA products.

Yeah, it was some financial reporter story on the future outlook of the movie/merchandise.  Probably CNBC like SNTrooper said.

The wall is full of the Disney 6.5" Elite Series figures, yes.

Yes, CNBC's entertainment business reporter, Julia Boorstin, was at Lucasfilm in San Francisco reporting on Force Friday.  You can see some of the Black Series 3.75" figures in the shot, and I'm pretty sure one of those is Rey.

I know her head is huge, but OMG is that 6" TIE Fighter enormous!

I'm sure these will be a BLAST to hunt for, considering the final Black Series wave was the first non-lightsaber items Walmart has stocked since 2012. The fact that these are new SA characters that are store exclusives will probably make them even harder to find. AND they're coming after a first wave full of terrible repacks.

Love all 3 and hope I can get a handful of troopers.  Don't intend to army build like I did for the OT, but squads would be neat.

I've been off the Army Building thing for years now - that Stormtrooper is the first thing I've seen in forever that has me thinking about it.

They should sell a 6 pack for $40 or $50 - just a white mailer box or something where the figures are in baggies.  I'd buy a few of them...

Now i am, very slightly, regretting buying the 5 POA version of the new stormie. No going to return it though. Glad that this line isnt quite dead.

Love the mail away pack idea. Bland packaging since they are going to be opened and there is no need to "sell" it.

Surprisingly, the more I look at Black Series Kylo Ren, the more I'm questioning whether I really need one. I'm actually quite happy with my 5 poa figure, it's really quite nice from a "sit on the shelf and look cool with the many hundreds of other figures I own that are basically in neutral poses anyway" perspective. Sculpt and paint quality look about even, the only thing is the articulation, which I think I can probably live without, since most of my stuff ends up in neutral poses anyway. I'd definitely grab a couple stormies for a squad though, mix them in with a few of the standard ones, cuz why not. The pose-ability is a little more noticeable if you've got a squad all standing completely identically.

Yakface posted images of wave 2 figures on the pegs at a Canadian WalMart store.  Given the timing, I'm wondering if this wave is being released in conjunction with the Battlefront promotion that's going on at WalMart this weekend?

That was a rumor but some of the west coasters who have checked their walmarts have come across nothing. Maybe by the weekend we will see some sightings.

Jesse, what do you think of the FO Stormtrooper so far?
Title: Re: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 2
Post by: Jesse James on November 30, 2015, 01:32 AM
I was able to do some fiddling this weekend, and I gotta say the Stormtrooper is incredible, as SA Stormtroopers should be.  The poseability is outstanding, and just kinda made me bummed about the 5POA.  I've gotten most of those for less than their retail cost, otherwise I'd not have purchased them I think.  And now having SA Ren and Stormie in-hand, they're just so much more fun (I didn't buy a 5POA Ren though as a comparison).

The figure just felt like a sigh of relief upon sitting around messing with it.

It's probably the only direction this film release I'd bitch, is the 5POA line vs. better articulated figures.  I think both could have a place, but honestly I'd preferred they just dumb articulation down to 30AC levels, sell figures for less than $13 but more than $7, and just lower the expectation that EVERYTHING will be SA...  These SA figures though, they kinda took the wind out of my sails on the 5POA I do have.  As it is, I'd been kinda picking on them lately because they ironically don't stand well.  I can't think of any outside of the pilots that actually do stand well in this line.

The flame and regular trooper both topple easily as does Rey...  The Finn I got seems ok though.  That just seems kinda funny to me given that being one of the supposed improvements.  To me, if the feet are sculpted flat, there's no problem.  It's when Hasbro gets all fancy pants on trying to have a slight step to the figure's stance that they can ruin even low articulation on stability.  Look at POTF2 Ceremony Luke, Ponda Baba, and others... Things back in the day seem to be remembered with some rose colored glasses I think.  Hell, original Han from 78 fell over pretty easily.  Chewbacca too, Luke... I feel that's a "plus" to lower articulation that needs nixed from the list, just my opinion.

I will say, if these were pre-orderable, and you were guaranteed to get your figure, and the line weren't 60+ figs a year, I'd be fully behind that.  I'm not against a lesser line and collector grade stuff relegated to an exclusive role, just wishing it was an exclusive with a pre-order online available is all.

Anyway kind of on a tangent there.  I really had fun fiddling with these this weekend.  I hope they're widely available.

Had to stop by Wal-Mart for so etching else so I figured I'd take a stroll through the action figures and was lucky enough to find a lone Kylo Ren. Wish I would have been there soon enough to find the others but was happy to at least get one. Like Jesse mentioned, I'd be fine with becoming an exclusive line, able to be preordered too.

Hit up a few WalMarts on the way into work and I was able to score everything I wanted plus a full set for another local collector/member of this site.

I have only opened up the First Order Stormtrooper so far and it is a fantastic figure. It really is a shame that more figures can't be like this.

Two things bother me about how Wave 2 has been "handled" so far...
1) There should have been NO carry-forward figures from Wave 1. Will Wave 1 & 2 figures be carried forward into the Wave 3 case? That seems like a huge mistake.
2) The online ordering option, contrary to the original press release, was never made available. Why not?

Maybe it'll come after?  Who knows.

On repacks...  It's tough to say they can do waves of completely new stuff.  I dunno.  Without seeing books, how many are being made, all that stuff...  Usually waves are balanced out individually so who knows.  Wave 1 sold here, fairly well.  Even this last round has moved somewhat with the holiday rush.

Wave 2 is obviously moving better though.  ::)

The Stormtrooper is really awesome...  If someone's bitching about not being able to find these in one breath, then bitching about something minor wrong with it (to them) in the next breath, I gotta say I hope they don't find any then.  To me it's just a fun figure.  So is Kylo...

Leia really is meh though.  Yikes.  I thought of getting a 2nd, but yeah, no.  Not now.

She seems pretty low production run if the case packs are true...  Rightly so.  She's bad.  She doesn't look bad (IMO) she just is not valued out to me.  DSE Leia would've been much cooler had they done softgoods only on her, and the overall good articulation.

If the Robot Kingdom (http://www.robotkingdom.com/b4054h007.html) listing is correct, yes.  Kylo (x2), FO Stormtrooper (x1) and Luke (x1, ::)) are repacked in Wave 3.

Finally found wave two this morning just outside of Boston. Toy manager said truck was out for delivery today so I swung into Walmart before work and they were putting a fresh case out. Looked like 5 Kylo's, 3 storm troopers, 2 Leia and the rest repacks.

I grabbed two Stormtroopers and 1 Leia and Kylo. I made a trade with a Canadian collector for a set of 3 for 6 inch Poe/_Riot control set but it's been held up in a Chicago usps customs sorting center for over a week. Will just return a set (and maybe keep a 3rd stormtrooper).

Dare I say, bring on wave 3?!? (To the shores of America that is)

I don't see many of the 5 POA of either of those ever around here, and Kylo especially.  Dollar General was one of the only places that seemed to have stock even.

Leia's short-packed I do believe.  I think that's part of her scarcity.

Yes, Leia is short-packed compared to Kylo/FOS - the Wave 2 case is:
4x Kylo
3x FO Stormtrooper
2x Leia
1x Vader
1x Chewie
1x Jedi Luke

Still no sign of these in my neck of the woods.  One of the three Walmarts got in another two cases of wave 1, and another simply got tired of waiting for new figures to arrive from any assortment period and allocated the two months of empty space to (and I'm not making this up) 16 pegs of glow sticks, four pegs of flying discs, and one peg of TPM 3D Ric Olies that look like they've been through an actual war and have been marked up to 12.83.  So yeah, not anticipating I'll be seeing wave 2 anytime soon around here.

On the off chance I do happen across them on a trip out of this miserable hellhole, does the 5 POA Stormtrooper head swap easily onto the SA Stormtrooper body?  I'm not skilled with painting or customizing at all, and it would almost be worth it to me to just buy the cheaper version to swap out the heads.

I think it's probably due to the sheer size of the Walmart chain.  There's currently over 4,000 stores domestically.  It makes me think that distribution of these exclusive offerings takes some time.

I think there's more like 3300 Walmarts - over 4,000 if you included Sam's stores.  Walmart is actually known for having revolutionary distribution systems and they add distribution centers as the number of stores expand.  I would guess this is more of a supply side issue with either Walmart not initially ordering enough product or Hasbro not delivering quick enough.  Either way, I hope they get these up on line for us to purchase soon.

They could be in the back not getting out...  I've read quite a few stories over the years that one of WM's biggest issues is getting enough employees to keep shelves stocked.  Toys supposedly really suffer for this too.  It's a problem all retailers are facing I guess but the bigger ones it is worse.

Locally I know our WM stores are very picked over but their main grocery competition is a company called Giant Eagle which has a union base of employees, but tends to have things stocked well.  Costs a little more though but rarely is out of what you need for dinner. *shrugs*

Meanwhile, back on topic...

I was getting pretty bummed seeing Walmart after Walmart with pegs and pegs full of Wave 1, but finally lucked out today and pulled a Wave 2 case off one of the pallets that was clogging the main aisle (Walmart  ::)).   I left one Kylo behind for the next guy that comes along, but bought everything else Wave 2 in the case - 3x Kylo, 3x FOStormie, 2x Leia.

Heading to eat dinner soon, but looking forward to cracking them open tonight! :)

Wasn't sure where to post this, figured this thread was as good as any, but just in case you are using BrickSeek to see if you should check a store for these or the Wave 3 TBS exclusives - don't bother. I have visual confirmation that putting in the item number for any of these figures individually produces inaccurate results - and it has nothing to do with being 24 hours out-of-sync like the site mentions.

The lesson here is that BrickSeek was designed to be a tool for finding Lego sets at these stores, I'm moderately confident that Lego sets do not come in assortments, they come in solid cases of each item - so inventory of Lego is theoretically much "simpler" than inventory of individual figures that come in an assorted case pack.

Pete - you might have missed Jeff's earlier note on this.  Looks like you have to put in the assortment #, not the individual item number or UPC.

Brickseek won't work unless you have the inventory # for the case assortment - 46173522.   That works...  but you won't be able to tell if it's Wave 1 or Wave 2 or whatever.  Just tells you that they have some type of Black Series 3.75" figures.   :-\

Of course, results may still vary.  I was at Walmart last night and they show 27 items in stock, but couldn't find them on the floor or in the stockroom.   :o

Btw the heads don't swap on the Stormtroopers.  Very different neck pegs.

Honestly I don't see all the hooplah over the paint though.  If that's the worst thing being complained about, it's so minor IMO.

Thanks! Yeah - I knew about that number - but when I try it, it still tells me 0 in stock in stores where I know there are multiples of Luke, Vader, Chewie - and the in the case of one store, a lone ANH Celebration Leia still hanging on the pegs. So, it's definitely a mixed bag of success.

I was out on Monday and saw about 10 storm troopers on the pegs between 2 walmarts so I grabbed a 3rd one with a nice paint job. No sign of wave 3 in Boston yet.

Wow! Hope that ends up being the case everywhere.

The nearest Wal-mart for me is about a 35 minute drive.

Do any of you guys happen to have extras of wave 2 you'd like to sell?

If you had posed that question last Friday I would have said yes. I had an extra set that I had sent from a Canadian collector in a trade. But it is now gone

I have a spare Kylo Ren, and if you don't care about the condition of the package, I could probably grab a Princess Leia on the way home from work if you want (it was there this morning - so no guarantees).

No worries, thanks anyway!

I'd take the Kylo Ren off your hands - and I'd be opening them anyway so you could ditch the box and just ship him in something small.  If you run across a Leia that'd be great too, but I don't want to ask anyone to go out of their way, so if you were stopping anyway - awesome, if not no worries.

Thanks!

Okay - no problem - the store that I saw it at is on my way home from work so it's definitely not out of my way. I'm good for SA First Order Stormtroopers, so if I stumble across one of those, like with the Wave 3 case, I'll grab that for you as well.... I'll shoot you a DM later tonight to let you know if I was successful or not picking up the Leia.

Awesome, thanks.  I'll make sure to post here if by some freak chance I find them - but the next time I'll be near a Wal-mart at all is going to be at least 8 days from now.

I was able to pick up that Yavin Ceremony Leia for you Rob.

Message me your address when you get a chance - I'll send them out early next week.

Awesome, sent, and thanks!

Now to just find half a dozen Stormtroopers somehow.  Hopefully Hasbro is smart enough to send these out in pretty big numbers at some point.

No sign of these in SoCal, and my buddies and I are looking pretty dutifully.

Ha! I just grabbed him one too. If anyone needs a Leia let me know. Found 3 unopened wave 2 cases on a pallet. Grabbed a Leia.

Also if anyone else wants I can go back later and grab any other figures. Would just be cost and shipping of course.

I found remains of a case at Walmart last night and grabbed a lone Stormtrooper with horrific paint apps on the helmet. Might try my hand at repainting it myself.

I am anxious to get wv3.  Can't believe they're coming out this fast.

I was up at my WM today tho and wv1 is selling fairly well too now.  More Leia's than Luke CHEWIE or Vader ATM.

Saw this wave while stopping at Wal-Mart yesterday, and picked up Leia and the Stormtrooper (found Kylo Ren on an earlier trip).  I'm glad to be finding these, but it has been very sporadic.  I really wish they were a wide release, or at least somewhere besides Wal-Mart.  Anyways, nice figures, hope we continue to get them.  At least they're hitting the main characters pretty well.

This wave completely skipped SoCal as far as I can tell. Wave 3 has been found. But in general, the WM's out here just aren't getting any stock. Maybe 2 stores out of 15. Not even finding remnants.

I have to say that this wave is a big hit in my area.  I stopped off at Walmart to pick up another Kylo Ren for my Dark Side shelf and they were all gone...so were the FO Stormtroopers!

I was able to find another Kylo Ren for my Sith shelf and after trying to figure out why it was so hard to get it to stand up, I realized it has two right feet.

you got that right, I found poe and finn right before x-mas and that's been it since. state of collecting just has lost its appeal entirely. the only thing I get might be a 5 POA for background character

The paint on the helmet

I've lol'd at everyone complaining about that.  The figure is perfect imo.  It's among my favs in a while.

The complaints do seem pretty absurd.  Looking purely at the design and articulation of the figure, it's clear that the people at Hasbro learned a lot from the SA trooper heyday of 2005 - 2012, and utilized some of the best techniques into the design and engineering for the First Order Stormtrooper.  This trooper is awesome in terms of the sculpt and articulation.

As for the helmet paint apps?  That's something that can be dealt with merely by having a discerning eye when you're shopping in the store.  I've seen some troopers with better paintjobs than others.  If anything, this is a QC issue and not a design error.  And it seems like something that could be resolved in a later wave.

Here are two of the troopers I recently received from WM.com.  They look ten times worse in person.  The right eye almost at the ear on one of them.  I love this figure, but the paint apps and quality control are really weak.
