Hey everyone.  I know it's geeky but what the hell, right?  Here's the first batch.  Hopefully, you can all join in.  Let me know what you think.  Tony (The Carded Kubrick Guy)

Post by: JediMAC on November 19, 2004, 04:51 PM
Awesome work, as always Tony!  Even better now that you're going loose (from scratch) and not just carded, with your customizing talents...

As for working at Medicom, I'd have to say no, though.  We need to pace ourselves a little bit here, so as to still be able to afford all these (along with the exclusive carded stuff).  And considering you seem to be able to pump these things out 20x faster than them, that frankly scares me...   ;)

But keep 'em coming.  Nice to see the "future" of the line unfolding...  Well done.  Most jealous, I am.   8)

How the hell do you make those things Tony?  Those aren't parts straight off of Hasbro figures are they?  Do you somehow shrink them down?  Whatever the tricks of the trade are, they're definitely cool...

Hey everyone,

Here are some new figs- General Lando, Ugnaught, Death Star Droid(s), Snaggletooth (vintage blue tribute), and pics of the whole collections with the Medicom and Kamiru figs.  If anyone is interested in buying one of these let me know because I could use the money.  (It'll probably be costly, though.  Sorry, Kubricks cost a lot!)  I am also now offering Series 3 custom carded Kubricks.  Let me know what you think of the new figs.  Tony

I just updated.  New carded figures are Bossk, Zuckuss, Obi Wan, and Han Carbonite Freeze.  Let me know what you think.  Boba Fett will be ready to ship on Friday for those of you who don't want to fork over $300 for the Medicom one.    $50 for JD members.  Also, Series 4 is open for pre-order and will ship by month's end.  PM me if you are interested in any of the carded figures.  Thanks!

I love your customs Tony, great stuff!  That 12-back design is really cool  ;D

Here are my first attempts at carding Kubricks (the glue that I used messed up the ink, so I have to redo them  :-\).  I downloaded the templates from FFURG.com  :)

Boba Fett
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y23/Gregorbian/Kubricks/KubrickFettCardedfirstattemptFRONT.jpg)

Bossk

After I took a pic of the Bossk, he somehow got turned around in the blister and his foot fell off  >:(.  Oh well, all the more reason to try again  ;)
Title: Re: Custom Star Wars Kubricks
Post by: bikeridetony on August 8, 2005, 12:32 AM
Not bad.  I think you should go for the vintage bubbles with the "canyon".  Footings make all the difference too.  You don't want your figs bouncing around in there.  Glue sticks work great!
Title: Re: Custom Star Wars Kubricks
Post by: Gregorbian on August 8, 2005, 12:41 AM
Thanks Tony, I really appreciated your advice before I started  ;D
I just used blisters from a hotwheels car, it was the only one that was big enough and I didn't want to order the bubbles until I knew the steps of making a card.
When you say "canyon" are you referring to the bottom of the bubble (how some of the older ones had a bump-like thing at the bottom)?  Should I put the colored cardboard inserts in the bubble to help reduce "shifting" of the figure?
Thanks again Tony  ;D

When you say "canyon" are you referring to the bottom of the bubble (how some of the older ones had a bump-like thing at the bottom)?  Yes

Should I put the colored cardboard inserts in the bubble to help reduce "shifting" of the figure? Yes

This all depends on what your goal is.  If you want to hang these on your wall then it doesn't really matter.  Use heavy paper.  It makes a big difference.

Hello everyone,

If anyone is interested, I can add you to the mailing list for my Carded Kubricks.  Being on the list means first dibs on deals and a discount on all orders, including bulk deals if you own a store or just want to buy a few.  I've has some inquiries from JD list members so I thought I'd make it a public announcement.

Right now, I'm extending this deal to JD members and Carded Kubrick list members only.   As a promotion, I'm selling Jawas, Wickets, and IG-88s for $16 or all 3 for $45.  If you've been wondering about these but can't bring yourself to shell out the cash, this is a good opportunity to get one cheap.

As always, trades are welcome!

Just want to mention what a great job Tony did on some custom carded Kubs I recently ordered (esb fett/sandtrooper/vader).  The removal helmet vader is awesome and I especially liked the custom painted black pauldron sandtrooper.  I think I like them better than the Bape and Parcos I've married them with; thanks again Tony!!!

Just a quick note on the "boil and pop" method for head swapping kubricks. I've done a few x-wing pilots using Jedi luke and ceremonial luke.
What I do is get a small saucepan of water boiling, and using a metal tong, hold the kubrick by the feet dipping the head in the water. I hold it for maybe 45 seconds to a minute, and that gets the adhesive for the neck peg nice and goopy. Then I use a blunt item like a popsicle stick or butter knife back to gently pry the head away from the shoulders.
I might have to look into some other generic humans from other kubrick lines to make into extra pilots-

Title: Re: Custom Baron Fel Kubrick - WIP
Post by: I Am Sith on November 29, 2007, 11:01 PM
I realize that for some, PT Kubricks are bad enough, but the thought of EU Kubricks is probably blasphemy.  I'm sure that I'm going to get run out of the Kubrick ranks with this one, but I couldn't help myself.  I'm a huge fan of the X-Wing Rogue Squadron Series and was really psyched when Hasbro decided to do a Baron Fel figure.  Well, after aquiring my 3rd TIE Fighter Pilot Kubrick, I decided to have some fun with it.

I was all set to get it completed tonight but then realized that I got the wrong black paint this weekend (Black Ink vs. Black from Games Workshop).  Needless to say, when I went to put the flight vest back on the head, all the black began to chip off the vest.  So, here's how it looks right now and once I'm able to paint the goatee, re-paint the straps, and touch-up the grey and red I'll post more pics.

Also, I'm struggling with what hair to use.  In the comics he's basically got black hair in a buzz cut and he's got widows peaks.  I thought about just using the Han Series 2 hair, dremeling (sp?) the widows peaks and sculpting it into a buzz cut, and then painting it black.  Do any of you know of any other Kubricks that would work better?  I'm open to suggestions.

Post by: I Am Sith on December 2, 2007, 11:26 PM
Thanks for all the complements guys.  I appreciate it.

I decided to have some fun with a PT Kubrick this time.  Having one too many Biker Scouts laying around, I camo'd it up and created a 41st Elite Clone Trooper.  I went a little overboard with the brown, so I need to go back over it with another round of green, touch-up the black, and then paint the visor, but here's how he stands now.  Enjoy!

Should check some other Kubrick lines for hair.

CB

Of all the other Kubrick lines I've looked at, the closest thing that I can find is the Arnold Terminator figure from the Terminator 3 box set.  It's perfect, except that I'd have to paint it black.  However, getting a hold of a 'reasonablly priced' T-3 set just for the hair is a bit unrealistic.  I'm going to try my hand at sculpting it from greenstuff (acquired from BrentS) and see how that turns out before I do something rash like buy a $30 box set just for the hair...

Post by: I Am Sith on December 14, 2007, 10:28 PM
Keeping with the Comic Pack theme of customs I started with Baron Fel, I decided to do a quick re-paint of the Series 7 Royal Guard to create Carnor Jax from Crimson Empire.  I really wanted to do a cloak off version with all the armor underneath, but unfortunately unlike the Hasbro Royal Guards, there is no armor underneath the Kubrick cloaks.  Oh well, this will have to do until I can figure out a good body to use as a base for a cloak off version.  Enjoy!

Post by: I Am Sith on December 31, 2007, 02:04 PM
As a teaser, I'm also working on a Luke Skywalker from the Heir to the Empire Comic Pack.  I hope to have that one done by the end of the year...

As promised, here's the Comic-Pack Luke and a helmet off version of the Series 6 Luke X-Wing Pilot.  I ended up using the left over Series 2 Han and Series 6 X-Wing Luke pieces from when I made the Baron Fel to make the Comic-Pack Luke.  You can't really see it in the picture very well, but I painted the arms and hands to match the face skin color, and painted the torso as a tank top instead of the v-neck that the Series 2 Han normally is.

For the helmet off X-Wing Luke, I was able to use the existing Series 6 figure and the TRU set hair from the Ceremony Luke figure.  I just scraped off the chin strap from the head instead of trying a head swap.  Enjoy.

Glad the paints seemed to work out okay.

Yeah, the Fair Shadow was a spot on match to the face color.  I needed to do a few coats though before I was satisfied with the coverage.  Also, it wasn't until I put the clear dull coat on that I was really satisfied with how it came out.  Thanks again for letting me use more of your supplies...  Looks like if I keep this up I'm going to have to get my own.

Very nice job, keep the customs coming.  :)

Well, since you mention it, I'm already working on my next one... Ceremony Han from A New Hope.
Title: Re: Custom Ceremony Han Kubrick
Post by: I Am Sith on January 8, 2008, 11:07 PM
Well, since you mention it, I'm already working on my next one... Ceremony Han from A New Hope.

I wanted to get this one finished earlier, but I've been spending more time downloading CD's than I have been customizing.  I took a break from downloading tonight to work on this one though.  I always thought that the TRU set Luke looked lonely without his buddy Han to keep him company.  I was originally planning on just giving my wife a Series 2 Han since he's her favorite character.  However, she said that she wanted me to customize it instead.  So, since I had an extra TRU set Luke torso laying around, I decided to whip this one up.

I'm not sure if I'm done with it or not at the moment.  I need to sleep on it I guess.  Feedback is always welcome too... In the mean time, enjoy!

Here's another one that I've been wanting to do for a long time now, but couldn't get my mitts on an extra Hoth Han.  Now we need Medicom to step up and give us a Hoth Luke and Leia to go with him!

I cleaned up the right side of the hood in back since I took these pictures and painted that white area brown.  I need to touch-up the front left with some off-white paint, but other than that the only other thing I plan on adding to this is the VTAC Hoth Han hat/goggles accessory for him to hold onto... As always, enjoy!

Post by: I Am Sith on February 14, 2008, 09:10 PM
Thanks for the compliments guys.  I had fun making that one.

I had one final Han custom in mind and finished it up last night after the Carbonite Thaw Han.  I always liked the discussion about whether the Hoth Han coat is blue or brown.  Obviously Medicom thought it should be brown in Series 4.  But I always thought that instead of the Darth Vader with Luke face reveal chase figure we got in Series 4, we should have gotten a blue coat version of Hoth Han (like the blue and red Snaggletooth figures in Series 5).  Well, here's my own quick re-paint version:

Well, interesting times here on the Kubricks boards with the release of Series 8, the Blue Stars figure and the Darth Maul set.  Took some time tonight to do a quick Battle Droid repaint to create a Battle Droid Security figure.  Hope you all enjoy.

So as promised yesterday, here's a Battle Droid Pilot:

The blue looks more washed out/pastel than it actually is in person, but I still might mix up a darker shade of blue and try it again.

Title: Re: Custom Clone Troopers
Post by: I Am Sith on July 28, 2008, 11:11 PM
Thought I'd paint up some custom Clone Troopers to go along with my Clone Trooper Commander and Battle Droid repaints.  Here are a Lieutenant and a Sergeant:

I'm very pleased with the green, but the blue is too dark... I'm thinking of mixing up some lighter blue and trying it again.

I was messing around with my Kubricks today and created a simple alternate version of Jango from series 9. I simply popped/pried off the jetpack, slid off the helmet and then added the poncho from the TAC #57 Jango figure. I then simply enlarged the hole in the poncho and refit the jetpack, popped the helmet back on and presto - a AOTC cutscene Jango! Obviously, the jetpack is wrong but I'm fine with that. Pic to come....

Nice collection of custom troopers there I Am Sith.  I think my favorite is the Stealth Biker Scout - that looks pretty nice.

A question for you (or others) on customizing Kubies.  Do all of the parts just pop off or will they break?  Do you boil and pop to get pieces apart? I thought the heads would at least come off easily, but I feel like I'm going to break the clonetrooper or stormtrooperhead if I pull any harder.  Thoughts/suggestions?

Thanks!

For the Clone Troopers and Stormtroopers, you have to separate the torso in order to get the heads off.  Medicom has added a nice lip to the neck post that doesn't allow it to be pulled from the torso.

I boil the figures for a few minutes to get the glue soft and then use an exacto knife to split the pieces of the torso apart.  Good luck!  Shoot me a PM if you have any additional questions.

I've got a question for all you customizers.  I recently made a purchase on eBay for the Star Wars Mail Away Box Set which includes the Snowtrooper.  I rushed my bid only to realize later that the picture included in the auction was not the actual set being sold and that the Snowtrooper figure had fallen out of a 5th story window of an apartment building!  I'm a little upset with myself because I think I overpaid for the set but at the same time I'm still really excited to get the figures.  Anyway the seller sent me pictures of the Snowtrooper and it actually looks like it is in a lot better shape then I expected.  The only real problem is there is a deep scratch on it's head.  So basically I'm wondering what the best way to remove/cover up the scratch would be.  If you'd like a picture before making a suggestion I can provide one.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have!

Hey Jake,

Congrast on getting the box set for starters - that's a nice piece.  For the Snowtrooper, I personally would just wait a year for the Deluxe wave to hit.  That has a very similar snowtrooper and you can just swap heads.  That shouldn't be too expensive in comparison and will look better than any kind of fix up job.  Just my two cents.  Good luck whatever you do!

I didn't even think about doing that.  I'm sure the Snowtrooper will be common as well since most of the imperials have been, so that's a plus.  I might keep my eye out for a single Stormtrooper as well in case a really good deal hits eBay, but ultimately I think I will swap the heads when the new Snowtrooper comes out.

Thanks a lot,
Jake

I didn't even think about doing that.  I'm sure the Snowtrooper will be common as well since most of the imperials have been, so that's a plus.  I might keep my eye out for a single Stormtrooper as well in case a really good deal hits eBay, but ultimately I think I will swap the heads when the new Snowtrooper comes out.

Thanks a lot,
Jake

One think to keep in mind is that you're going to need to separate the torso in order to do a head swap.  If you're careful when you're opening the torso you shouldn't be able to tell.  Good luck!

Okay, so I was able to do the head switch I wanted, but after boiling and popping the arms off, I can't seem to get them back on.  I'm working with a clone trooper and just want the same arms back in there, but the hole looks ridiculoously small.  Any suggestions?  I was able to pop the legs back on, but they are a little looser than I'd like.   :-\

Very nice.  I wouldn't mind having one of those for my Minimate "Man With No Name" Blondie figure.

When I can't get the appendages back on, I just make sure that the sockets are wet before I try again.  There have been times when I've had trouble getting the legs to go back on, but the arms usually go back on without a problem.  Good luck!

Well, I had serious problems getting the arms back onto the shoulder sockets.  I tried water, boiling, even some vasoline to slip them back on, but no dice.  The ball socket looks to be about the same size as the one used on the legs, but the hole for the arms is only half the size as the hole on the leg.  I wonder if I somehow shrank the holes by boiling too long - my discarded obi-wan arms also look to have tiny tiny holes.  Appreciate the tips all the same.   ;)

So, based on all of the cool customs I saw here, I decided that I had to have a custom General Obi-Wan Kenobi Kubrick figure.  This has been a troublesome four days in the making, but I finally have a finished Clone Armor Obi-Wan completed.  I took a slightly different approach than some of the other customs on here and a few liberties on the outfit.  For example: I hate the big white circles that pin his cloak to his chest, so I just went with the chain beneath the cloak.  Anyway, let me know what you think!

Sorry to hear about all your troubles with your arms too...

Not much customizing involved here, but I recently picked up a Metal Gear Solid Snake to make a custom Cade Skywalker from the Legacy series.  Added the Hasbro gun and a Qui-Gon lightsaber and viola!

Thank you!  He's definitely one of my favorites and relatively easy (which is good since I'm not much of a customizer).

There was something wrong when I set up Jabba last night and I couldn't figure it out until I put in ROTJ this evening.  He was missing his sidekick and translator...

Had a couple of ideas for custom kubs. Not sure if I'll actually go through with buying the decal paper/paints and probably ruining my Lukes in the process, so I thought I'd post my mock ups here for fun. Happy Thanksgiving!

A good head to use is the Kane face hugger kub. If you remove the face hugger the head has a good pained expression on it.

Thanks guys! I'll probably start with the jedi Luke version-- i don't mind experimenting with him as there are no shortage of cheap extras floating around. My plan is to draw the face really clean in illustrator and then print it out on waterslide decal paper, then just turn the kub's head around backwards and transfer the decal to the blank side. For the lightning, I don't know if it would be easier to hand paint the bolts or make decals. I'd want it to look as clean as possible. Guess I'll just try it and see.

A good head to use is the Kane face hugger kub. If you remove the face hugger the head has a good pained expression on it.

Cool, thanks. I was looking at the chest burster Kane face as a reference. Is face hugger Kane's expression different? MAybe I could just use that and tweak it a bit. I wanted Luke's yell to be more on the whiny side, not too gritty.

Also noticed that the hair on Dagobah Luke would be perfect for these.

been working on a few finally made some progress on one... Not much of a custom, but it makes it easily reproducible.

In a wave a kubrick nostalgia, I was thinking about the characters who were never made that I would've most liked to see. Decided to create my own (digital) custom for probably my most wanted kub: Vlix! I recall he was heavily requested here on JD back in the day...hopefully you guys dig it.  :)
