Title: Marvel Legends
Post by: Brian on June 9, 2003, 01:25 PM
Just thought I would start a thread to discuss this great line.  I just started collecting some of these (just the X-Men characters for now), and have learned quite a bit about this line from OCB.  It is the only other line I collect besides Star Wars, and like many of you, I'm not finding much of those lately.  Do many of you collect this line...what are your opinions...or anything else you want to talk about relating to the ML line.  I personally think Wolverine and Magneto are both great figures (only ones I have), and I can't wait for the Series IV Beast to be released later this year (as well as Gambit).  Anyways, I'd be happy to hear anyone's thoughts and opinions on this line.

Hey mosnab, glad someone started a thread on this here ;)

I love these things and have had good luck with them so far.  Through trading and luck in the store I have most of what I want from this line, but for the no mask Wolverine, which is way too expensive on ebay :o

From ML I I have ironman (inlcuding the gold one, which I saw four times in stores) and Captain America.  I paid only $5 Cdn for each, lucking into both on clearance at Walmart.

From ML II I have only the doombot ;D and the Thing.  I also got a trenchcoat thing from a friend on the Spawn board.  He is holding a Hulk with shirt for me until I get something else to trade.  I suspect those latter two and the movie DD I have are from the 'Best of' line.

From ML III I have Wolverine, Thor, Magneto and the movie Daredevil mentioned above.  I guess mine is from III since we never saw the Best of line in Canada (yet).  I keep passing on Ghost Rider, mostly because I think it will scare my daughter.

I also have the original DD and a yellow DD (thanks Dain) plus a couple of the spiderman figs.  From the spidey line I have the Hobgoblin (have a spare if anyone wants to trade) and I snagged a Venom with the ooze junk the other day.  I like that Venom marginally better than the one from the Spiderman classics line.  I need the black spiderman still, but can't find a deal on ebay that I'm willing to take (yet).

For interest sake, I "stole" this info from somewhere else: ;)

Also, for anyone who hasn't seen them already...here's a link (thanks again, OCB) to a number of pictures and information about Series IV (you'll have to scroll down a little bit)

http://www.aftimes.com/aslu/slu.shtml

Personally, I think the Beast figure is great....just some of the poses that are possible with that figure....plus, he's always been one of my favorite Marvel characters.

I started collecting this line after Series 1 came out.  It's quite possibly some of the best work Toy Biz has ever done.  Here's what I've got:

SERIES 1
Captain America
Hulk with articulated hands
Toad
Iron Man
Iron Man (gold variant)

SERIES 2
Human Torch
The Thing
Prince Namor, The Submariner
Doctor Doom
Doombot (just scored him finally, last week)

SERIES 3
Wolverine
Magneto
Thor
Ghost Rider
Daredevil

BEST OF
Iron Man-Stealth Armor
Hulk-blue pants & work shirt

As for the maskless Wolverine, I haven't even seen one in person at a ridiculous show price.  I also passed on The Thing in his trenchcoat.

Trenchcoat Thing is one of my favorite figs of the line, I'm surprised you passed on it Nick.

I know that chase/variation pieces irritate a lot of people (and no mask Wolvie is really irritating me right now) but since I have most, I like them.  Being a quasi-reformed MOMC collector it allows me to do both and something similar to what I do with McFarlane Sportspicks.  I get to keep the rare/chase/variant MIMP behind and display the regular figure in front.  A loose one to play with and a carded one for pure display.  Works very nicely with the goalies and with the chase from this line.  That's why I still need to pick up a Dr. Doom regular.  I'm just hoping for a sale, but will probably get burned if I do.  These have sold very, very well up here.

My yellow DD is an exception though, not mint packaging.  I'm just dang happy to have one though.  Now, find me a black spidey and a no mask wolvie and the world is a happy place.

You might want to buy a Dr. Doom, and  ASAP.  He was always packed kind of short in the cases.  I think the most I saw of Doom from any case was two figures.

yah, this line is great. I held off for as long as I could but once I picked one up it was all over.

I don't collect anything except SW, but came across these cool Kubrick pictures of some of the Marvel fellas over at Medicom's site today...

Was Batman Marvel?  No idea really...

Anyone collect the Kubrick stuff too?
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Morgbug on June 10, 2003, 10:36 PM
I think Scott bought some of the Marvel ones.  I like some of the spidey stuff, but a line has to be drawn somewhere, y'know? ;)

And no, Batman is DC, the vastly inferior line ;)

Dimetrodon.  I stole the list that OCB was updating over at RS.  I'm sure somewhere in those 9 or 10 pages there's a link to the information regarding series V.  Anything could change, but for the time being, I'll take Scott's word for it.

I am having very serious thoughts about picking this line up.  I'm not too worried about variants but do want to get all the regular releases.  Wave II and III shouldn't be a problem as I see them fairly often.  I I'm a little worried about.  I do recall seeing Iron Man and Toad at a KB recently, but haven't seen Hulk and Cap for awhile.  For the Spidey figs, I was thinking about the ultra articulated movie Spidey (unless there is a more comic book version thats similar.  Any ideas, guys?) and I've seen the Hobgoblin pop up from time to time and Morbius I saw recently.

The later waves look to be awesome.  I can't wait to see Colossus and Sabretooth.

Some of the Spiderman figures from Spiderman Classic wave 1 & 2 are still lingering around some KayBee stores.  The red & blue Spidey's in both of those series are pretty good.

As for the Spiderman Classic line, I've got...

SERIES 1
Spiderman (red & blue)
Spiderman (black & white)
Venom

SERIES 2
Spiderman
Daredevil
Rhino

And the carboard backed Spiderman line...

SERIES 2
Hobgoblin

SERIES 4
Venom

SERIES 5
Morbius

I think I might go back and get the Lizard and Doc Ock.  There doesn't seem to be enough reason for me to go back and get every Spiderman.
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Morgbug on June 11, 2003, 11:53 PM
I'm cursed by Hobgoblin.  Everywhere I go, there he is.  It's like he's stalking me.  Dude, leave me alone, let someone else buy you. I must have seen six in the past week.

New shipments of spidey classics 2 around here still.  Wish they'd bring in some more of #1 so I could get a black spidey.  No series 5 with cardboard, so no Morbius for me yet.

Get rid of some of those accursed power rangers and damned yugioh toys and there might be room for them. >:(

Well, its started.  Picked up Thor and Hobgoblin last night.  The detail and articulation on these are amazing.

Wave III is everywhere, but II is starting to dwindle.  Last night all I saw was Namor (the Jango Pilot of Marvel Legends, can you say pegwarmer?)  I'm not too worried though.  I think I know where a Thing is and will go after work today to see if he's still there.

Lots of Human Torch still around up here if you need it Mikey.  But about Namor?  You hit it right on the head.  Lots of Thing on the pegs, but I think he was overpacked.  Kinda like Iron Man ::)

Well being a fan of comics I love the ML series.....and I think it's probably the best series ever done by Toy Biz.

I haven't been buying many of these...but I do have Toad,Hulk and the variant chase Hulk.

I absolutely cannot wait until the Punisher figure hits the pegs.....Punisher is my alltime favorite comic character.

They should've packed more Doom's in those cases, and not Namor.  The Thing was packed pretty well, but he also sold pretty well.  So, did anyone go in for the Human Torch variations?

Hey Bri, did you grab that 12" Marvel Studios Punisher?

I got the Blade 2 12" and it was sooo worth the hour I drove for it, as well as the $35 price tag.

Nope, I still don't have the 12" Punisher......I'm falling behind on Pun figs........I just concentrate on so many items that it's hard to nab everything.....

Thanks, but no need.  I found Torchie and Namor last night at Gamestop for 50% off.  I got both for $10.50.  No Thing though.  (It would have been sweet if Thing and Doom were sitting in the clearance box, but oh well).  I'm not in panic mode yet about wave II and I'm going away for the weekend, so I'll definitely be looking for these things in another state.  For wave I, I might go to ebay.  I saw a few deals for a complete set that I might jump at.

Wave 1 pieces were showing up at WalMart's as part of the "Best Of" assortment as recently as a month ago or so.  Might be worth checking out.

I have been, but WMs around here suck.  They have nothing Marvel wise but endless rows of the movie Hulk figs and crappy Spider Man classics figs.  Almost as bad as the Star Wars situation  ::)

What was Toy Biz thinking when they released Namor??? I mean if they had released the original version, then I would have picked it up, but not that Village People version!! ::)

I love this line. Finally my favorite comic universe in figure form that are not only perfect renditions, but the mad articulation!!!! If anyone knows me from any of the other sites I sometimes go to, articulation means alot to me. I was spoiled by GI JOE, so anything else thatn 10 points is unacceptable. So when I saw these I flipped. ;D Especially the gorgeous Capn!!!! A perfect figure and rendition of Captain America!!!!

Lady Jaye, do you have the Marvel Studios version of the grey cap?  I know they are more pricy, but a friend who has one absolutely loves it.  He has the ML version as well.

Pity about those Studio versions with the female characters though.  Silicone's never been that attractive to me anyway.  More reasonable renditions of Black Cat and Black Widow would have had my money in a second.

Whoops, I meant Marvel Select, not Marvel Studios (12" line).

The aforementioned Black Cat.  A little more bodacious than I would have thought it should be.

Cap, not grey as I thought.  Must be a grey cap out there somewhere?  Hmmm.

Oh that's ok. To me those are statues, not figures. But the Marvel Legends line is the greatest comic line ever!!! If I could only get some DC figures with that much articulation, I'd be having some Battle to end all Battles. But alas the only figures from DC are those over priced direct merchant figures, from DC Direct. And they have lil to no articulation, compared to the Marvel legends line that is.
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Morgbug on June 13, 2003, 01:34 PM
Yep, pretty statuesque.  I'd really like a Marvel Legends (loosely applied) Black Cat figure, perhaps with a whole costume and somewhere less than 44DDD in stature.  Yes, I know she's marginal as a legend, but at least she's been around for quite a while, has been more than a minor bit player (Toad???) and has had the occasional mini-series.

DC figs do indeed suck, but being a Marvel guy, I don't mind much.  Probably because so much Batman stuff has been produced.  Even the Justice League figures are statue like.  Certainly not posable like the Legends line.

Yea, you're right. I am also a Marvel girl, have been since I really got into comics, back in the 5th grade. And even before that Marvel was the place to get the only titles I ever picked up Transformers and GI JOE. Then suffice to say after starting with Fantastic Four #305 I was hooked.

But I do have a soft spot for DC, after all in the 80's they had the Superman movies, re-runs of the delightfully campy Batman show, and weekend airings of the campy  Batman movie, and of course the Super Friends. The only thing that ruined it, were those stupid Ownder Twins. ::) Plus I still remember bits and pieces of Wonder Woman with Linda Carter. So DC has been with me since youth, but comics wise there is no freakin comparison, Marvel all the way, or better yet; make mine Marvel!!!!!

Also in the 80's DC's  Super Power's figures were so much better than Marvel's Secret Wars line. But now Marvel Legends beats them hands down.

Speaking of Marvel Legends I am so jonesin for the Punisher figugure. I haven't had one since the crappy Toy Biz one from way back in the days. back when Ty Biz was crappy. So who here collected those figures, just cause we were happy to get any Marvel figures!!! ;D I know I was, but theyr were pretty bad. Good thing Toy Biz has improved so much since then.

#305?  Lord, I think that's about when I stopped collecting.  Groan :-\

Anyhoo, about Toybiz, yep, I have a few around here now.  Still carded too, though some tooth marks from kitty.  A wolvie, Venom, green goblin, spidey, cable and Angel (Archangel).  Didn't have much money at the time, being in grad school and all (maybe undergrad?).  I didn't mind them so much, good for the time, not so for now.
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Mandalorian Madman on June 14, 2003, 06:05 AM
yah dc direct isn't the greatest line...they use this really weird glaze on hands (green lantern especially). I like the new super friends boxed sets though. sinestro looks good and so does black manta. and if they do a wonder twins set it will be the greatest set ever. as long as it comes with gleek.

anyway, saw some carded shots on ebay of punisher, gambit, and beast. any word on when they will be out? punisher looked pretty nice.  looks like he comes with a cart load of weapons.

must have conan the barbarian.
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Morgbug on June 14, 2003, 11:40 AM
Conan would be a cool figure.  As long as they did the comic book version and not the Arnie version.

I was expecting ML IV to be out in the US now.  The US has been one line ahead of us since they started but now we've caught up.  Probably waiting out the summer lull to start shipping.  July/August?  Soon, I hope.
Title: Re: Marvel Legends
Post by: Nicklab on June 14, 2003, 12:24 PM
I think Toy Biz is waiting for the Hulk to hit theaters, first.  I don't think they want ML4 to compete with the Hulk line, and that might be delaying series 4.
