Title: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Dave on May 18, 2016, 03:09 PM
As usual I'm trying to avoid significant spoilers, but still want to chat about mainstream knowledge around this film.  Figured we should have a spoiler and non-spoiler thread.

Sounds like there is going to be a new trailer released on July 15.

Has anyone seen a teaser poster for this, or know if there is going to be one?

They really didn't do much for TFA, so I'm not sure what to expect with Rogue One.

Sounds like there is going to be a new trailer released on July 15.

When you mentioned this I had to look it up.  ABC must really want some ratings on a Friday night, because the trailer is going to air during a broadcast where they'll be showing one of the documentaries from THE FORCE AWAKENS BluRay release.  Really?  BTS docs are suitable for a network primetime slot?

The last trailer had me doing backflips (well, in my head anyway), and I'm excited for this to roll around this week.

A new trailer for ROGUE ONE will debut this week during television coverage of the Summer Olympics in Rio on NBC.  Check it out this coming Thursday, August 11th on your local NBC station.

Weird they are pushing it on NBC and not an ABC event

I saw Disney is pimping their new animated film, Moana, during the Olympics as well - guess Disney is just wanting to get some buzz off the Olympics, even if it helps NBC temporarily.

The Olympics do huge numbers in terms of the size of the audience.  I think that's the reason why they're doing this.

The composer who was originally announced to score ROGUE ONE, Alexandre Desplat, has been replaced.  Due to scheduling issues related to the reshoots that took place during the summer, the schedule for scoring the new movie was thrown off.  This reportedly caused some scheduling conflicts that would not allow Desplat to finish the score.  Replacing him on the job will be composer Michael Giacchino, who has worked extensively with JJ Abrams.  Read more about this at i09:   http://io9.gizmodo.com/three-months-from-release-rogue-one-a-star-wars-story-1786691696?rev=1473982544042

Thrilled to see Giancchino who is outstanding. The reshoot explanation is odd as the schedule has not changed. The film is still coming out on schedule and at most the reshoots would create additional material to be scored, but films are typically scored at the very end of the production cycle, which would be right now.
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Nicklab on September 15, 2016, 08:36 PM
Not necessarily.  The final cut of a movie can get locked down early relative to the theatrical release, despite visual effects not being totally completed.  The scoring may have been pushed back to accommodate a lengthier edit schedule that was caused by the reshoots.  Temp visual effects shots get used as placeholders in the edited version until those are done.  The last part of the process is generally the final sound mix.

And if Desplat was already booked on another show, I could see him leaving the ROGUE ONE production.
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Darby on September 15, 2016, 10:14 PM
Well there's a couple things. The reshoots were part of the post schedule. This occurred on TFA last year as well as there were some reshoots and pickups in 2015. John Williams was scoring TFA from May of last year over a long period of several months. This was accommodating incomplete effects obviously which has always been the case. Recorded music is very often edited in the final mix to accompany whatever is required. It's very unlikely Desplat has recorded nothing to this point or was taken by surprise by the schedule. Maybe he was but something is off. In any case Giacchino is a great choice and I look forward to the movie.
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Nicklab on September 16, 2016, 11:50 AM
I get that reshoots are a regular part of the process.  The way these reshoots were characterized was a little different from what I've seen mentioned about pickup shoots in the past.

One thing that I think may be at play here is that there may be significant expectations of a new composer for a Star Wars film.  John Williams set the bar incredibly high, and for a long time music in a Star Wars movie has almost taken on the role of an ever-present character.  Was Desplat able to live up to those expectations?  Or was his score too much of a departure?  That could be what's really going on here.

Can someone verify the first day we'll be able to see the movie in the US?

The release date is Friday, December 16th.

Am I right in assuming that we'll actually be able to see this the day before on Thursday, December 15th starting at roughly 7PM?  And tickets will likely go on sale on roughly October 16th?

Thursday night at midnight going into Friday, should be when you can see it.  Though there's almost always earlier viewings if you look around as a group.  I think the locals here are trying to muster up something for Wednesday.

Anybody know what the thick silver "pen like" things are that nearly all the characters have in pockets either in the front of their shirts or in pockets in the upper arms?  I thought they might be an element of rank, but I couldn't find a pattern, and it appears both the Empire and Rebellion characters have these.

Krennic seems to use them to help hold his cape in place, but characters without capes have them as well.

Code cylinders.

They even have their own Wookieepedia page! (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_code_cylinder)

It's funny how Civil War has such a larger overseas take compared to Rogue One:

Rogue One:
Domestic: $514mil
Overseas: $500mil

Civil War:
Domestic: $408mil
Overseas: $745mil

Cap 3 did something like $130mil more than R1 in China.  Not sure if that was a censorship thing or what.  Just weird when you look at the big differences in some other countries all over the world.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Rogue One international tickets sales continue to rise.  I know some of those countries had a pretty late release date.  China didn't release it until Jan 6th, so in theory its still in wide release in the theaters there and should continue to add to the totals.

There might be other international markets as well that had late release dates and will continue to tally sales.

I think China is just more happy with a movie where good guys fight each other while the bad guy sits back and watches.  They're probably less enthusiastic about a grass roots uprising that is working to overthrow a tyrannical regime.    :-X

I read somewhere that the first 6 SW films were not realeased in China so there isn't quite the built up audience that the MCU films enjoy.

I assume we're getting different packaging, different extras, etc. at the different retailers with the Rogue One DVD/Blu-Ray release on April 4th.  Or is it going to be the same at all retailers?

Anybody got any info on what to expect in a couple of weeks?

Thanks for the link, Jeff. Not sure how I missed this prior. I'll probably go with the Standard edition since I preordered the Japanese version of the movie (for the exclusive SH Figuarts figure ::)) and that includes the Best Buy steelbook and the Target character pictures. Don't think it has any of the extras. I'll probably change my mind between the basic and Target versions several times until then.

I picked up the Target exclusive edition with the bonus disk.  Total run time was approximately 8 minutes and not worth the extra money at all.  The packaging is cool though and I like that I can change out the cover art.

I watched the standard bonus features and while it did give some insights into how the story came into being and some of the character development, I really felt like they were only skimming the surface.  Specifically when they were discussing how they brought Tarkin and Leia 'to life' in the film.  I think that they could have done a full disk just on this process alone.

I don't know if I've just become jaded by the depth of the Hobbit and LOTR bonus content and the ridiculous amount of detail they go into, or if it's really that there wasn't enough bonus content for RO.  But I really do feel that they could have gone into much more detail, especially as this was the first standalone film from LFL.

I watched it on Blu-Ray last night.  Nice to have the ability to pause, rewind, etc.  Finally heard the "paging General Syndulla" bit and saw Chopper rolling through the base.  I couldn't spot those two in the theater even with two viewings.

I was watching the bonus disc from the Target exclusive version of ROGUE ONE last night.  And I was surprised to see Moroff in some scenes with Pao on what looked like the Scarif location.  Which was really surprising, since Moroff wasn't on board the stolen Imperial cargo shuttle, and he also didn't appear to hop off of the U-wing that brought in reinforcements.  Strange!

A lot of the ending was reshot, so...instead of Moroff, we got...Less-Roff.  :P

The survivors of Jedha including Moroff were meant to take part in the attack on Scarif, but were removed in the reshoots for some reason. Too bad, because those were some cool dudes.

How did the survivors of Jedha figure out where the rebel base was and to be part of the raid on Scarif?
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: JediJman on May 1, 2017, 11:38 AM
There could be all kinds of subplots for this.  The Jedha guys were Rebels, albeit extremists, so it's not all that hard to believe survivors would have joined up with the rest of the Rebels.  Maybe that was too far fetched and that's why they're in the deleted scenes versus the actual movie.
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Nicklab on May 1, 2017, 11:45 AM
I think that's exactly it.  Writing a plausible explanation for why Saw's faction of extremists might be accepted back into the Rebel Alliance might have just taken too much time and exposition to explain.  At least within the span of time from the destruction of Jedha until the Scarif raid took place.
Title: Re: Rogue One (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Jeff on May 1, 2017, 01:17 PM
At the very start of shooting on Rogue One, "Saw's extremists" didn't exist.  Nor did Chirrut, Baze, or Bodhi (http://ew.com/movies/2017/03/20/rogue-one-alternate-ending-revealed/).  Jyn was a Sgt in the Rebel Alliance (hence "Sgt Jyn Erso" on the toys).  "Moroff" (or Senna, as he was called at the time) was going to be one of Jyn's squad of rebels on Scariff.

As the plot of Rogue One changed, so too did Jyn's origin.  Moroff was one of the characters axed from Scariff and re-purposed to Jedha to fill out Saw's crew of militants.

The Scariff stuff was some of the earliest stuff to be filmed, which is why so much of the Scariff stuff from the early featurettes (like this one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2N0Mn4i4Dw), which has a nice look at Moroff/Senna on Scariff) and early teaser promos of Rebels on Scariff don't really match up to the final cut of the movie.

Yeah, not bad for $120 lol. I believe Japan hasn't latched on to streaming media like the US has so they still buy physical DVDs of movies and companies have to offer cool stuff besides the basic discs we get here in America now. I think that insert with the merchandise is my favorite part, really takes me back to 2004 when you could get a 2 disc DVD for like $13 on release day at Walmart.

So why is there still a spoiler-free version of the Rogue One thread? I'd say anyone on this board who hasn't seen the movie at this point should just give up on being a fan.
