Title: Do you talk about what happens here to others?
Post by: Scott on June 18, 2003, 12:05 PM
Be it your spouse, your family, your other non-SW friends?

My buddies tease me incessantly about my "On-Line Star Wars buddies" even though we belong to a group of "On-Line Fantasy Football Buddies" as I like to point out.  I like to point out little know facts and cool things I pick up here, show them some of the latest new toys coming out etc.

I sometimes talk with my wife about a humorous incident that happened or Matt's Bulky Sweater but usually about the time her eyes glaze over I stop and then she teases me a little

Oh yes, I definitely do. My anecdotes don't always translate well to people, though. I know about the "eyes glazing over" thing.

Just my wife really.  You are my "little star wars friends" to her.  Pretty funny really.  She finds the chat sessions mildly amusing, though she's not that fond of Matt anymore.  IN life, timing is everything. ;)

NO. YOU ARE ALL MY CAREFULLY GUARDED SECRET. YOU WILL NOT SPEAK OF THIS PLACE TO OTHERS.

To stay on topic, the only people I talk about my internet-goings-on (or going-ons) with are the people in my head.

Last night, a tip at Rebelscum's "Look what I found" section landed me my first two Red Battle Droids ever. I wouldn't have checked the store if I hadn't visited the thread.

I've been buying accessory packs to build my army...waiting and salivating for the day when I could finally start with the single carded versions for 4.79 instead of 9.99 for the one with all the extra junk.

So when I found these thanks to a tip online, I went home and bragged to my girlfriend about how cool the boards are...etc, etc.

"That's nice" she said.

I've also told people certain pieces of trivia I've learned at various boards....which usually gets me a nice blank stare. I don't think most people understand the communities here, but I sure like em.

I talk to the wife about certain things that happen here. I to get the blank stare and the thats nice. She doesn't mind my collecting or being online at the sites, she just doesn't see the draw to it all.  In respect I probably give her the same look when she talks about her job and dealings with her customers.

I talk about some of this stuff with online friends who I actually see in the real world.  But not with anyone else.

Yeah, but only because her favourite guy was in there.   ;D  Ahem.  No word on the sweatshirt yet, most of what I've seen has been crap.  Not sending that.

I do also talk to the other geek here in the office, the only other collector within talking distance.  He's reluctant to go online for some reason.  Totally computer competent, just doesn't seem to like online discussion.  Oh well.

Just with my family.  On occasion I'll talk about it with my girlfriends (if we are shopping and I have to stop at Target for a tip I read about) and they just roll their eyes and laugh.

Very seldom do I mention it because I know others could care less.  That is unless they are Star Wars fans.   My lease ran out 2 months ago.  I'm living with the parents until I get married in November.  Then I'll live with her.  So, I got an Ephant Mon in the male from the classifieds on this site.  I was forced to explain how I got this figure delivered to my parent's home.  I faced the parental interrogation of who it was that sent me the package, how much was it, how do I know the person, etc.

It was pretty funny really.  They were thinking the worse of course.  Until I told them I only paid $6 and sent a check.  Then they acted like those Star Wars sites are ok afterall. LOL!

Most of my better pals know about me doing graphics for the site, since we all met in Advertising Design, this sort of relates, I guess - but I don't really talk about any of the SW stuff unless asked about it first.  :-\

The only respect I get is from the 13 and younger crowd. Basically I'm the cool SW Mom who knows all about the figures, gives cool presents and throws awsome SW birthday parties.

The adults in my life think I'm just a little insane ??? ;D

Well, judging from my response in the Are you a "closet" Star Wars fan or collector? (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=28;action=display;threadid=1223) thread, you can probably guess that I don't discuss this or any other Star Wars boards, or my involvement thereon.  My wife totally knows of course, as do my parents since they've "caught me" in the forums a few times when I was visiting their place and asked what I was doing...

My wife might as well be a forum member at JD herself though.  We talk about all the goings on here all the time, both regarding the site itself, and all of the staff and members herein.  She knows a lot of the members here by both their forum name as well as their "real world" name, along with just a lot of other personal info on them.  She'll often ask, "So, how's Scott, Brent, Jim, Dale, Chris, etc. doing...?"  "Did you tell them about ___ yet?"  "Did Jim or Scott see this episode of Trading Spaces yet?"  "Are you going to mention that in the forums?"  Yadda, yadda, yadda...  Basically, she's totally in tune and completely supportive with everything about the site, which is pretty cool.

But other than that, I'm still hiding in my little closet...   :-*   :P

So therefore, I'll have to agree with Spuff's post!   ;D

JediMac, that's great that your wife is so supportive and involves herself in the forums to some degree. I'm lucky in the sense that my boyfriend is a regular forumer (although I've yet to get him to register himself over here, I'll get on him ;). He does use the chat once in awhile, though).  In fact, that's how we met. We both know all the goings on in forum-land, and can talk about them together.  The forums are definitely a world within a world within a world, and what bonds we form here are not easily shared with the people in our daily lives, especially those who don't frequent forums of any sort, or who don't collect toys.

I was thinking of you Carrie a little when i thought of this topic cause I knew you guys were both forumites, there is very little parnet/child or husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend kind of forumites around.  Purple4lee and rogue9horn come to mind as well as Princess Leia and Prince Kheldar at RS

I do update Wifey on Matt's house search whenever we are watching house hunters on HGTV :-*  BTW, how is the search going?   :-*

My girlfriend is registered with me on the Seattle boards and really enjoys them.  I think she has more posts than I do actually. If not, it's close.

I was thinking of directing her to other forums (like Rebelscum) back in the day, but I really don't think they know how to treat the ladies. It's like they're so shocked to see a female in their isolated little online world, that they immediately elevate her to "goddess" status and drool all over her every day she appears.

Certain obssesive love threads and other lameness over the one or two girls around there comes to mind. I hardly wanted to be the one that recommend that sort of lame enviornment to my girlfriend. It would be like throwing her to a pack of really lame wolves just so I could have some more company.   ;D

However, this place seems a lot more laid back and friendly. Maybe I'll suggest she head over this way one of these days.

No, you may not.  Matt works just fine!  Besides, there's no confusion, as the other fellas are named Matt #2, Matt #3, Matt #4, Matt #5, etc...  See how that works?  Being the original Matt here, means that you can just call me Matt!   :-*

And no more of this BB stuff from Brent and Scott either!  I keep thinking you're referring to David - the other double B (Boba Binks)!

Boy, is my wife gonna hear about this forum nonsense when I get home tonight!   ;D

No, of course not.  ::)

I think she definitely got the worst of it (at least that I can remember), and it was probably largely due to being one of the only ones to post a picture. That's really too bad. I know there were a couple of other people subjected to it as well. I remember posting in those threads telling people to get a life and such before they were closed down. I mean....seriously. It was like a pack of geeky construction workers that had never talked to a girl before or something. Made me embarassed to be associated with the group...and I definitely didn't want to subject a loved one to the same sort of treatment.

Good comments coming in here!!  :D  My Wife Shirley
thinks I'm a little compulsive about my SW's but I just point out the fact she collects Barbie's,hehe.

I talk with her all the time the goings on at GH
and here and other sites. She acknowledges my comments but she doesn't quite get it... ???

My buddies at work were all taken aback when I finally came out of the closet as it were and they thought
at most I had a few figures and whathaveyou. But when I showed them pics of my collection they were just dumbstruck!!! :o  They all asked me how much money I made selling stuff and when I explained thats not what I did
most couldn't understand that. And trying to explain Trading, well, that went right over thier heads...LOL

Most of the time now I just don't bother.... :-\

I actually used things from the forums last semester in my EN112...   Made for good topics to argue and debate.  Some were just to show a point of view being argued poorly by an individual(s).  My class focussed on argumentative writing, so it made for good topics sometimes.

It was funny because people and topics were being discussed at length, and they had no clue...  Like being studied like labrats.   ;D

My ex used to love watching me type in the forums too, and would just laugh away while I replied to different topics...  She was always supportive of my habits and hobby.  :)  Hell she still is after we've broken up cuz I'll sometimes get a call or email letting me know she found something cheap and picked it up for me!

Can't knock that kind of devotion.

No details...  It just made for good classroom discussion.

We had "Smart classrooms" with overhead interactive technology...

Basically, we could go online via a large projection on the lecture room's eraser boards, and could interact with websites by touching the projection.  Pretty neat little thing, so we actually logged into (rebelscum at the time) forums and browsed about various topics.  My prof asked if anyone knew of any good topics online we'd like to discuss and nobody answered of course, so I volunteered rebelscum's forums and the myriad of arguments and fights it had.

A few of my assignments then were based on various topics from the forums then...  Of my own choosing. ;D

The political debate(s), I can attest, got a lot of reaction from the crowd, and the most laughter.

The class was mostly women, for those curious about that, age 19 to 21.  There were maybe 10 guys total, about the same age, then a woman in her late 30's and myself were the oldest in the class...  Surprisingly, nobody was made fun of for being a Star Wars "geek"...  Shocked me I know.

The topics discussed were NOT relegated to Wuher's though, and came from all over the forums.  Wuher's of course got the majority of the interest though.
