Title: Birthday gifts for a customizer
Post by: BrentS on May 20, 2006, 10:05 PM
So, I'm having a birthday coming up next month and some family has been asking for ideas.  I know that I'd like to get some more items that I can use for customs.

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread with some cool gift ideas for the customizer.  Anything unique that you've purchased or been given that's helped out your customs.  I know there is the obvious things like brushes and paints but anything else that is out of the norm that might be useful??

Hmmm.... I can never have enough exacto knives, and also foamcore.

Silcone rubber gets used very quickly. Also, a good selection of high quality paints. Brush cleaner is something I'm always out of. How about a set of Micromen, MicroLadies and MicroSisters?

Dremel.

Or perhaps some new paintbrushes, or ink pens.

My ex used to hate buying me Star Wars, but she loved buying supplies for customizing.  Of the many gifts she bought me that are still used to this day were:

1) Pepe Wax Pen
2) Badger Air brush
3) Storage Drawers
4) Dental Probes (for sculpting -- easily available at Medical supply stores.)
5) Comic Backing Boards (for printing cardbacks)
6) Ink Jet Catridges

I have to agree with tyk's and famines list.
I get all those items for Birthdays of Father's day.
It keeps the cost down a bit when you need big items.

Dremel attachmets, Hot knife, space organizers (with lil drawers)
Lighting stand for taking pictures, Paint bottle rack...
Think of something that you always
wanted to get, but didnt, casue fodder was more important at the time.
Those are the things to ask for.

Hope this helps.

I always request naked dancing girls. But I usually only get figures.  :'( A cheap airbrush might be the way to go.

A gift card also to TRU or somewhere is nice so you can pick up some extra figures for custom fodder.

Or a lot of loose figures on ebay...

The beauty is, pretty much anything can be a good gift for a customizer.  A certificate to a toy store or hobby shop is a great suggestion...but pretty much any basic supplies are a big help.  Paints and brushes, styrene sheets, Krazy Glue...any of that stuff would make me squeal with delight if I got it for my birthday.

Such a neat thread!  I'm going to send my husband the link to it... no use mincing my words, I suppose!  :D

All that people have mentioned sound like good suggestions, so I've only got a few things to add.  On the photography end of things, there are those neat li'l tiny tripods that one can use for close-up photos (of which we do a lot).  CHEWIE's gift card idea is a good one -- also gift cards/certificates to hobby shop type places like Hobby Lobby or whatever's in town.

On the photonovelling end of things, foamcore and posterboard and other similar things are always good.  As are Playmobil props -- they are JUST the right size.

And, of course, storage containers are always good.  Supremely useful to the customizer, yet completely intelligible to the non-specialist, and none too expensive (which is the drawback to things like tripods and Dremel attachments).  My mom's gotten me one or two.

Hope you  have a great birthday, Brent, and that you get all you want!  :D

A nice photoshopping program for those of us who make photonovels, or simply want lightsaber/blaster effects, perhaps? I don't know how much they cost, but it was an idea. :)

One can never have enough epoxy, for sculpting, or just correcting an area where you accidentally punch a hole through while dremeling. (It's happened a few times...)  :P

If you're into molding and casting parts, you can never have enough of the following:

Baby Powder
Vaseline
Rubber Gloves
Small Paper Cups
Soft, "tickling" paint brush (to get the powder in crevasses of course!)
Paper Towels
Magazines to read while waiting for molds and plastics to cure

This is also a great starter kit for a sperm domation clinic.  Not that I'd know anything about that.....

okay...the sperm clinic part , we didn't need to know , lol..

but , I agree if you are talking about casting... everyone here has some pretty good ideas...just may I say that , for gluing foam board , extra hot glue sticks...lord knows these things are used up pretty quick...and replacment sharp blades for what ever you are using to cut the foam board (in my case, I use a "fiskars 45mm rotary cutter)

Great suggestions everyone!

It scares me that I've only been customizing for about a year and I have almost everything on the list already!!!!!  Maybe thats a good thing or a bad thing.

I think I'm going with the basic supplies:
More reaper paints (thanks to Hemble for that tip)
More paint brushes
More expoy (greenstuff)
Storage containers
Krazy Glue

another one I came up with is a lighted magnifying glass (for painting details).

I'm going to look into a Wax Pen, Hot Knife, and Dental Probes and Monster Maker Clay too!!

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

I get lots of tools for micro work...  Files, butane torch pen, X-Acto, Dremel Bits I want, etc...  I think casting kit is a good gift too if you wanna give that a go.

Paint's always a good one too...  I can always use more Tamiya paint in some bulk and keep a list of what I have/don't have on me in my wallet incase I'm near a hobbyshop.

I order a lot of stuff from MicroMark aaround my birthday time or Christmas.
