Title: Tamashii (Bandai) S.H.Figuarts Star Wars Figures
Post by: Jeff on October 31, 2014, 12:40 PM
Hmm... we don't have a thread for these yet?  Odd.  Now we do, I guess.   :D

In addition to the previously revealed Darth Vader and Stormtrooper (http://jedidefender.com/modx/index.php?id=1012) figures, Bandai Tamashii Nations are planning ANH Han Solo and ANH Luke Skywalker figures too.

Han and Luke prototypes are apparently on display at the Tamashii Nations 2014 event at Akihabara, which is going on this week.  Despite all the NO PHOTOS ALLOWED signs surrounding the figures, pics are starting to pop up online (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2014/10/31/shfigurarts-luke-and-han-anh/).

It's worth noting that the Tamashii Nations event is notorious for revealing/showing items that are NOT intended for release yet.  There are often prototypes displayed for informational purposes (highlighting figures that were sculpted but ultimately rejected for retail due to cost or other issues) or prototypes that are being displayed to gauge fan reaction in order to determine whether they should be released or scrapped.  Not saying this is for sure the case with Han and Luke, but you never know...

CollectionDX has posted updated pics for the S.H. Figuarts Darth Vader (http://www.collectiondx.com/news_item/11714/sh_figuarts_darth_vader_star_wars_updated) and Stormtrooper (http://www.collectiondx.com/news_item/11714/sh_figuarts_stormtrooper_star_wars) figures.

Still no pricing info yet, but it sounds like pre-orders should be going up soon...

A late report coming out of the Tamashii Nations 2014 event (http://blog.livedoor.jp/nation2014/archives/16282908.html) - apparently prototypes of  the following S.H. Figuarts figures were on display with NO PHOTOS ALLOWED signs:

- Another Han and Luke (NOT the ANH versions linked in the post above)
- Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker
- Scout Trooper and Speeder Bike
- Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui Gon Jin

Time to comb the web for contraband photos. ;)

Their Joker, Batman, and Harley Quinn are gorgeous...  I think I'm gonna blow Diane's son's mind with those pics this week.  He loves all things Batman.

I'm interested in these...  I don't really understand the difference though between these, and like those kit figures we've seen too that are available on pre-order places for fair prices.  I thought that Stormtrooper looked amazing, personally, and may order one.

The S.H. Figuarts figures are action figures.  High quality, fully painted, uber-articulated action figures.  The S.H. Figuarts are put out through Bandai's Tamashi Nations brand which represents their top quality figures for collectors.

The others, the 1/12 Vader and Stormtrooper are model kit figures.  Injection molded, cut it from the sprue and assemble it yourself, model kit.  Complete with water transfer decal kit and Tetoron sealant.  NOT for someone looking to open a package and stick a figure on a shelf.

OK, making sense...  The kit figures look really good, built and everything.  I can't imagine they'd be real complex.  I wonder if they'll jive well with TBS 6" stuff at all, or no.  I think that'll be really interesting to see.

I'm still tempted to buy one of those kit Stormtroopers just to have on a shelf...  I've opted out of 6" TBS stuff yet these figures could totally get me hooked in.

Yeah, these figures look better than anything offered by Hasbro or Mattel. I'll probably wind up importing some, but it'll be tough picking between the Bandai Vader and the Revoltech Vader with the funky ball joint cape.

Bandai SH Figuarts Updates! (http://tamashii.jp/special/sw/lineup_shf.html#campaignbnr)

- Darth Vader is due in April 2015; 5940 Yen
- Stormtrooper is due in April 2015; 4320 Yen
- Jedi Luke is due Summer 2015; price TBD

One of my favorite things about Tamashii Nations group is that they love making environment/set pieces to go with the SH figures...  check this out:

No detail yet other than it should arrive Summer 2015 too!

The preorder came up at HLJ for Vader (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN992860/Sci) and the Stormtrooper (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN992861/Sci), but they're already pre-sold out!  I'm pissed I missed them.  Hopefully the BBTS prices aren't too ugly, it's way cheaper for me to buy from Japan because the Canadian dollar is much stronger against the Yen than the US dollar.

I've seen Tamashii do something similar with other brands.  Sort of like a "first run" will include the stand and then a second run will be Vader alone at a cheaper price...  wonder if that is the case here too.

Uh, yeah, they're even starting to tempt me, who vowed not to deviate from 4" scale stuff...  But that?  Holy ****.

If Hasbro wanted to bump figure prices to $15 for the 4" line, I'd be giddy to see them go this route.  Multiple scene-specific heads, hands, hyper articulated, crisp paint apps...  I'd pay 50% more for figures for that kinda stuff.

And these shame their 6" line, top to bottom.

My Vader preorder from HLJ came in, but I decided to get the Stormtrooper too, because why not? Once that processes they'll be on their way to America.

Really glad I decided to order this Vader too, it does look great. I had no idea the cape would be so flexible, I thought it was going to be plastic like the Revoltech version, and hard to pose. Glad to see that's not the case.

Out of the box look at Stormtrooper (http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=242294).  Man, it is getting harder and harder to resist these...  I have a ton of Tamashii Nations' Robot Damashii figures (Gundams), so I know they've got some kick-ass quality.  :-\

Wow.  Both HLJ (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN996836/Act) and BBTS (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=BAN16398&mode=retail) pre-sold out on Darth Maul!

HLJ took a couple hours since it was overnight; BBTS only took 20 minutes after their first tweet to pre-sell out.   :o

Damn... I was on the fence about Maul because I don't want to open the Prequel floodgates, but I guess that makes my decision for me.

I see Luke is pre-sold out too, which stinks because I wanted one and never saw them go up.  :(

Finally got Vader (and his base) and the Stormie today. Package was kept in customs for a few days, and they tore the crap out of HLJ's packaging. Glad I'm not keeping these carded. :P

I'll try to snap some pics over the next few days, or over the weekend, at least some comparisons with the Revoltech Vader and Stormie.

Tamashii Star Wars SHF Display at Tokyo Toy Show this weekend.  Bandai unfortunately blurred the figures, but left the sign to announce...  SH Figuarts C-3PO and R2-D2!

Now we just need to comb through twitter for someone to post an unblurred picture... will be interesting to see how they compare to the Revoltech versions.

If they were smart they would focus on figures Hasbro has NOT done in their 6" line already. That would allow them to poach business from people like me. I can't afford 6" duplicates at those prices.
Title: Re: Tamashii (Bandai) S.H.Figuarts Star Wars Figures
Post by: Jesse James on June 25, 2015, 03:32 PM
They likely won't be doing an expansive line.  Their focus will more than not be on "iconic" things if I had to guess.  So I wouldn't count on them doing what Hasbro doesn't only because Hasbro will TRU to do tons of stuff from background to iconic main stuff.

I think their market isn't to compare or assimilate to Hasbro as much as it's to offer a superior alternative.

I got the astromech kits tho, and the price was less than one Hasbro fig, and they strike me as miles better.  Straight build with stickers over the waterslides they're still better looking to me.

Got Jedi Luke in the mail yesterday. Haven't had a chance to open him yet but I'll snap some pics this weekend since I have the Hasbro Black Series version too. One thing I notice from the packaging: the hair looks gold, as in it's shiny. Love how it comes with the alternate unmasked head for Vader.
Title: Re: Tamashii (Bandai) S.H.Figuarts Star Wars Figures
Post by: Diddly on August 24, 2015, 10:02 AM
Had a chance to open up Luke over the weekend (but too lazy to take pictures, go figure). It's a great figure, and matches well with the SH Figuarts Vader and Stormtrooper.

Probably my favorite feature is the alternate heads... and they worked in the Japanese "face swapping" mechanisms. Essentially, you can either swap heads, or swap just the faces, so for example, you can have a neutral expression Luke with the windy hair, or angry Luke with normal hair. Another feature I love is that the right wrist joint is flesh colored, so it looks like the glove comes "untucked" from the sleeve. Very weird thing to like, I know.

I do have the Hasbro Black Series Jedi Luke and did some comparisons... I do like a few things better on Hasbro's version, shockingly. For example, Hasbro had the separate chest panels for if you want to display Luke with his shirt's flap up or down. None of that with the Figuarts figure. Also I like Hasbro's lightsaber better, as the handle is more rubbery and easier to put in the figure's hands. Also, Hasbro painted the belt buckle silver while Bandai left it black. Not sure which is the screen accurate version.

Can't forget about the alternate unmasked Vader head that Luke comes with. It's something that should have come with Vader, but no complaints. It looks great, especially since Vader comes with a chopped off hand piece. Fooling around with the two though made me realize that Bandai's Vader is a tad bit too short... Luke comes up to his nose when I feel he should come up to Vader's chin maybe.

Just wish I could track down a few more Stormtroopers. :P

Looks like there will be an exclusive S.H.Figuarts Shadow Stormtrooper at the Tamashii Nation 2015 (http://tamashii.jp/special/tamashii_nation/) show at the end of October:

Price is 4500Yen.  Before you panic, Tamashii Nations exclusives often get re-issued as Tamashii web-exclusives a few months after the show.  You might pay a little more than a regular release due to the exclusive nature, but at least you get a second chance at grabbing them.  Happens to me with their Robot Damashii Gundam stuff all the time...

Reading some tweets from Tamashii, it sounds like this guy's daily allotment sold out very quickly when the show opened last night (our time).

Just a reminder not to go get one on ebay just yet as more will be available from Tamashii's web store later in the year and that should help the price come back down a bit.

Sounds like Tamashii has a LOT of new figures on display at the Tamashii Nations 2015 exhibit.  Unfortunately, lots of "no photos allowed" signs everywhere so it's hard to find nice pics so far.

Yakface (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2015/10/30/new-s-h-figuarts-figures-revealed/) has a pic of Chewbacca, Han, and Luke.  There are also samples of AOTC Obi-Wan, Jango Fett, Grievous as well as prototypes for Mace Windu, Super Battle Droid, a Geonosis BD repaint and a few others that haven't been quite leaked yet.

Found out through an Amazon Japan email that they had Phasma (out next week) and Mace Windu (out in May) available for preorder, so I signed up. Relieved to be able to cross them off my list.

For a complete collection now, I just need to find a way to get the Shadow Stormtrooper and Speeder Bike... my only option for the Speeder Bike might be through BBTS where they want $200 for it. Shadow Stormie is on Bandai Japan's website but I can't navigate it and don't know if I would have to pay to reserve one... :-\

Yeah that Luke is awesome. Reminds me of the Resurgence of the Jedi Battle Pack Luke vs the 2004 VOTC Luke. Looks like the Heavy Armor Stormtrooper is exclusive to Bandai's online store as well, meaning it will be a pain to get for a decent price.

Phasma got here today (and apparently someone who runs the JD Twitter got theirs too). Here's a quick comparison shot (http://i.imgur.com/veHy7VE.jpg) of the Phasma vs the Black Series Phasma... not sure who got the scale wrong. :-\

Other options you like?

I am trying to figure out where I can order these things other than through US importers.  The markup is pretty high.  I have followed HobbyLink and HobbySearch.  But I always seem to miss the preorder.

My two favorite options are HLJ (good prices) or BBTS (convenience).

Third option is to check eBay.  Yes, there are scalpers there but there are also some good deals if you are patient.  For example, BBTS has SHF Maul for $95, but eBay has some sellers offering him for $66 shipped from Japan.

Final option is dealing with Japan shops direct. AmiAmi, Blister.jp, Mandarake and Amazon Japan are all good options for Tamashii stuff, but you need a Japan address to place an order at most of them.

To get a Japan address you can use to order, get yourself set up with a re-shipper like tenso.com (or similar).  They offer you a Japan address to receive your orders and then they forward the packages to you in the USA.

This is where I bring up the convenience angle to BBTS or eBay. You may not want to pay the high markup, but it may be worth it to avoid the hassle or because you have no other option.

For myself, there have been times (usually on Tamashii Web Exclusive Gundam figures) where I've tried to avoid the high price at BBTS and bought somewhere else only to end up spending just as much once you figure in the original shipping + the forwarding company service fees + the final shipping to me in the USA.  :P

HLJ will likely put more up so don't give up on them, but I've bout Bandai kits from eBay (not sold in us now) and consider the markup negligible.  Dunno on these figures since I can buy them direct anyway.  How this is ok and a model kit figure isn't, is beyond me, but no complaints either. :)

SH Figuarts Jango Fett Revealed (http://news.toyark.com/2016/04/13/star-wars-sh-figuarts-jango-fett-201612)

I just got the Hasbro Black Series version last week, and it's a great figure, but this blows that one out of the water!

It'll come down to the removable helmet for many, but honestly I foresee someone casting that Hasbro head, possibly with a peg for the FA figure, in the near future.  Be a wise move on someone who does a casting business on the side anyway.

Sheesh... got to work this morning and saw Figuarts Mace Windu was put up for preorder on HLJ. Checked to see if they had the ANH Luke and they didn't. Checked again 30 minutes later for kicks and they were both pre-sold out!

I have Mace on preorder through Amazon Japan, but still need to find a way to get Luke. I was able to preorder the Heavy Armor First Order Stormtrooper through BBTS though.

Jango preorders went up this morning (afternoon in Japan)... HLJ sold out, but I was able to get one from AmiAmi (http://www.amiami.com/top/detail/detail?scode=FIGURE-018905&page=rt_07). No link yet on BBTS.

Apparently the preorders for these things always go up around 4pm Japanese time, which is around 3am on the east coast in the US, if anyone wants to get the jump on the next few figures.

New S.H.Figuarts Announcements (http://tamashii.jp/special/sw/) - Heavy Gunner First Order Stormtrooper and ANH Luke Skywalker.

The Heavy Gunner is a nice addition, but holy cow - look at that Luke.  Amazing, especially when you compare him to Hasbro's floppy shirt ANH Luke (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010B93PEW).

Releases on the 24th in Japan, so preorders should be shipping by the end of the week!

My order of the exclusive Unmasked Kylo Ren shipped from BBTS.

Also, an exclusive Qui-Gon went up for preorder, which I managed to get via BBTS again. Figured I might as well since I have TPM Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon already. AOTC Padme, AOTC Anakin, and now Qui-Gon all being exclusive must mean Bandai isn't impressed by Prequel figures' sales numbers.

My orders of the AOTC Anakin and Padme exclusives finally arrived from BBTS. Great figures, and a shame they're exclusive in Japan, and thus more expensive and harder to obtain.

I also have a shipment of 3PO and R2 on the way (released last weekend in Japan) which should be here by next week.

Kylo/EPG2/BB-8 release in Japan next week, so I should have that set after Thanksgiving.

Any display parts would be shown with the figures they originally came with, so for example, the ROTJ display is listed/shown with Darth Vader (http://sp.tamashii.jp/special/sw/lineup_shf.html#shf_darthvader),

The Revoltech figures are a bit of an acquired taste, if you can tolerate the weird joints. I recommend the 3PO and R2, never opened Fett, Vader is complicated to pose and the Stormtrooper is wicked tall

Thanks, I am doing some hard thinking about my collection lately.

Same. I'm wrestling with selling my Hasbro 6 inch stuff and exclusively collecting the Japanese stuff. More expensive, but there are a limited number of figures per year.

WOW!  Most of those look really impressive.  The AOTC Clone Troopers look amazing.  The only one that I think looked a bit off was Jabba, and that's just because of the nature of those joints they put in his tail.

Only figures from Solo that Bandai appears to be making are Chewie (same as the Target exclusive; essentially a rehash with goggles and a shotgun) and the Mimban Stormtrooper. They're rereleasing the ANH Han, which came out last year and is not hard to find, which has me thinking they won't be doing anything else from the movie.

ROTS Anakin went up for presale overnight... and sold out fast! I had to get one through a site called CDJapan that took the payment at the time of order, so that stunk.

Over the last week and a half I've gotten the following in the mail:

- Darth Maul's Speeder
- TLJ Luke
- ANH Ben Kenobi
- Solo Chewie
- Solo Mimban Stormtrooper

Haven't opened any yet but my Obi-Wan arrived in a damaged box, which was weird because the rest of the shipment was fine as was the mailing box, meaning I think they arrived to HLJ in Japan already damaged. Figure appears to be fine, though a guy on Discord who ordered his from AmiAmi had to send his back because his figure's face had a big chip in it.
