Title: Dimes Customs Update XI: Force Adept Assassin
Post by: Dimetrodon on April 25, 2005, 12:31 AM
My Wizards of the Coast SW Minis customs. yahoo.

This is an early custom of a  Republic Commando i did. I used a dengar body and a clone sgt. head. I was going for a bulkier armor for him. I think he is too dark a grey. I actually planned on doing another 3 but scratched the idea. I use him in the SW RPG now for random characters and such.

Mandalorian Commando. All I did was repaint it and add a Jango Fett Head. I like how he came out. Its more dull in life btw. (damn flash camera)

I was thinking of adding some grey to its stomach area under the arms. It loosk like there are lines for a breastplate. It would probably look better with less blue there too. what do you think guys?

I can't even imagine the difficulty in painting something that small! Nice work!

I think your ideas for the Mandalorian are good ones. What figure is that originally?

LOVE the commando! Do the others!

Thanks.

It's not too difficult to paint in such small detail, more or less you need small brushes and a semi steady hand. practice is good. these guys are usually around an inch and half to two inches tall. My guesstimate based on calculations is a 1/52 scale. very odd indeed.

The Mandalorian Commando is based off the original red guy to his right. A "Seperatist Commando" We all originally thought it looked a lot like a deathwatchmen (a specific sect of the mandalorians. its helmet is similar) But it is actually 90% like the Jabiimi seperatists. The Nimbus Commandos, they fought int he battle of Jabiim against the republic. They also had jumpjet boots which were cool. I don't have any pictures though, sorry.

and well, I can't do mroe commandos actually. my extra Dengars are traded away except for two of them. so I couldn't make a full squad.

The Nimbus troops were pretty cool. One day I have to make them, and all the Padawans from the Jabiim story.

I hope you come across more Dengars one day and finish the squad.  ;)

Very cool man!  Love these.  They look very nice and well painted.  I think the blue on the guy on the left is just fine.

I'm still somewhat partial too it, may or may not change it. I dunno.

I have a lot of projects int he works as far as these guys go.

most are repaints, soem are retools.

I need to borrow my friends camera, then I can get up pics of the repainted bossk (a trandoshan slaver now) and my in the works weequay.

Do you do muhc 3-3/4" stuff anymore, or just sticking to the minis for now?

I honestly can't say I'm much of a minature fan, but you did a great job on the paints at that scale. The visors and the belt buck;es are the most impressive. Great detail on such a small piece. :)

Customs, not really. I don't have much fodder to make anything interesting. But enough parts to make something weird. (lots of heads, hands, coats and junk)
I haven't bought many of the 4 inch figures either. Been buying the minis since back in October or so. I get random figures though. Shaak Ti, Plo Koon, Senate Guards and Grievous stuff.

The miniatures are cool to just look at, (to me anyway) but theres also the game behind them skirmish abttle stuff. it's cool. Kinda like an insane chess where everyone is the queen. I also use them for the RPG, as game aids on maps we have. The helmet on that mandalorian guy was hard tot do, took a few tries. i also changed the color from blue to red. But it worked out in the end.

Don't stay out of the 3-3/4" customs game too long Dimetrodon!  The minis are very cool, but I really like your work at the custom alliance, and can't wait until you make some new ones.

Found the dinosaurs I as talking about.

Also the link to my stuff at the Customs Alliance

A Euplocephalus from the dollar bin, and a Velociraptor from jurassic park. both repaints and nothing more.
Nothing too special either, but the limitations are due to the sculpt.

Ok here is an idea of what to expect.

That is what the Jango Fett miniature looks like.
Kinda has no neck, but that's forgiveable I guess.

Anyway I just cut one up and repositioned it. I think I'm going to paint it with one of two schemes.

Jaster Mereel

or

Jodo Kast

Which do you guys think would be better? (I'm leaning towards Kast)

oh and here is a taste of thigns to come. I drew out a before and after picture. The before on the left, the after on the right. I rock at MS Paint!!

I amde him so he is leaning towars his right, with his left arm shooting out, and his right bent. I have to redo his head too, and maybe give a neck. haha.
Oh, and I cut off the nups from the guns, so they appear to be smaller pistols.

The minis customs are pretty nice Dime...

This is something people have actually worked with since the WEG days to get more poses out of the figures.  I've seen guys use everything from model kit weapons and stuff to just plastic greeblies to get a new looking figure out of an existing mini.

I  enjoy seeing what you're working on...  I think WOTC's line is way too watered down as far as mini diversity.  The WEG line had like a dozen individually posed Stormtroopers, at least...  Same with the Rebel Fleet Troopers.  WOTC kinda shafted the Rebels it seems...  Commando's and Fleet Troops both.

Good customs, and a neat little scale to delve into.
Title: Re: Update II: Dimetrodons Customs Area
Post by: Dimetrodon on May 15, 2005, 04:12 AM
Well, with WOC collectibility gig, theyhad to do only so many figures per series.

We really don't need too many stormtroopers, but they did give us a good amount even.
3 poses regular
1 with an "elite rifle"
1 with a heavy rifle
1 officer
2 snowtroopers
1 scoutrooper
1 scout on speedrbike

and two more stomrtroopers let a lone a darktrooper or two on the way in the next set.

I would have liked a Sand trooper though..

But anyway, I feel lucky to have gotten the aliens they have made so far even. Hell, they gave us a yuzzem. Splinter of the minds eye style..

diverse enough for me I guess.

and do to them usually being commons, it allows me to do a lot of slice and dice. hell it took me a few tries to make a neck for the mandalorian i am working on.

I cut the arms off a few klatooinians, and kept trying to slice as small as possible. eventually got what i needed. now jango/mandalorian WIP has a neck. heh.

I plan to work on a lot tomorrow, I hope to get anywhere from 6 to 10 guys done. I also want to get a new battery for my camera, or attempt to borrow someones, to have pictures for y'all.

I think I'll post one a day for a month...
now where have I heard that idea before?  ::)  :P
Title: Re: Update II: Dimetrodons Customs Area
Post by: Jesse James on May 15, 2005, 05:26 AM
Yeah, overall character diversity has been good, but the WOTC line's been disappointing for army builders I think...  Lots planning to change over to the WOTC minis (from WEG) to play the tabletop game I think are still pretty disappointed...  It's rough going from 12+ variations of a troop to 2 or 3.

I'm hoping they create more over time...  The number of people actually playing with the commons in games is substantial.  I just hope the line's classic trilogy troops expands over time.  I'm hoping for maybe troop sets, actually, as the line does seem popular even outside its collectability range...

Are you gonna work with customs of the vehicles in Universe Huge, Dime?

Post by: Dimetrodon on May 15, 2005, 02:45 PM
I have a lot of AT-RT's, I was thinking about trying to put a stormtrooper on one, but that might be beyond my skills, as it would probably involve too much sculpting.

I have printed out templates to make an AT-PT though (out of paper) I will probably try that out sometime, but am unsure of what paper to use.

I do have a Jawa riding Ronto in the works, a Landspeeder, and all types of terrain pieces (vehicles wrecks, machinery, possible a vedor stand or bar)

Have you considered using a paper model?  There's free downloadable paper models online, and one I saw was an AT-PT I'm sure.  Could make a good stand-in at least in a game...  Maybe even be good enough for you to try scratch-building your own from plastic.

Paper Models are good stuff...  I just buy a heavy weight paper at an Office Supply store and print them out on that on my basic color printer.

Here is Jodo Kast, just finished this guy and was pretty excited to get up a picture.

I completely repositioned a Jango Fett, as seen next to him for this custom. I did some slicing and glued it all back together. The rocket on his jet pack is made from a Jango blaster pistol. and I gave him a neck via a klatooinian mini. I cut its arm up until I had a slice thin enough to use for a neck.

This is the picture I used for reference.

I wasn't quite sure what colors to use for the kneepads, but I went with what seemed logical and looked good to me.
I also did the gauntlets two shades of green as they seem to appear that way.

Also, JJ, the AT-PT i was talking about is a paper cutout template, from this site.

On top of the Jodo Kast, I was also working on this guy at the same time.

I don't really like this Gran much, but it's more or less just filler stuff. Something to look cool in a diorama, or maybe a leader for the Gran Raiders..
yay..

his head didn't quite fit as you guys might notice..  :P
His original bosy was of an Endor Soldier.

It's been a while and most things are still a Work in Progress (WIP)
I've been busy with work and various other activities such as moving.
Hell, I'm glad to be posting anything  :D

These pix aren't great but here we go.

An Aqualish Mercenary, WIP. Parts used are Rebel Officer legs, Seperatist Commando torso, and Aqualish Spy head

I like this one a lot. It's a mini from the D&D minis set Abberations.
a Yuan-Ti Halfblood figure.
He originally was holding a bow and arrow.

I fixed into some guns, and now I have some sort of Lizardman Mercenary.
The guns are from two different aqualish spy's. I carved one o them up for it to have a handle to fit into his right hand.

I plan to finish up my Endor Commando very soon, I didn't like how he came out so I am doing a complete repaint with it.

As a simultaneous projet I am going to paint up that Aqualish character and also do a Protocol Droid.
But I am unsure of the color for the droid. I was thinking white like K-3PO but I'm undecided.

So expect some more by sunday night (work really gets in the way)

Also what paint sealers do you guys use? I ran out of what I normally use, and can't find more of it, it's pretty old.

An EMP Trooper from the Battlefront Game. I used an Aerial Clone Captain mini to make it for the most part, and a jango jet pack to finish it off. I had to completely detach the Clone Captain from his old jet pack, but it all came out ok I think. I was a little bit lazy and just repainted over the existing red lines rather than a whole repaint.  :P

But when you look at the actual tiny mini, it all looks normal  ;D

I was actually inspired to make my EMP trooper because of the one I saw you make. That, and they were great in the game.

Here is one more I just did. A late night custom. I guess it can be called a head swap/repaint.

Your paintjob on the Nikto Marksmen is leagues above the original paint job!  Very well done!  That aerial clone jetpack looks weird (I know that's how they made it), too bad they didn't give him a Jango jet pack like your other Battlefront clone!  :P

I can't wait to use some of these guys in games or the RPG.  :D
and more is always on the way.

Next up on the agenda:

- Rebel Commando Captain
- Protocol Droid
- IG-72
- Rodian Fringer
- Captain Antilles (ANH)

Just took pictures of these. Some stuff I was working on slowly during some sleepless nights.
Nothing spectacular but I had fun with them. I have some more that will be done not too soon from now, so sit tight.

Rebel Commando, Officer

This guy is made from a Captain Antilles Figure and the head left over from my previous Gran figure, which was made from an Endor Trooper. I don't really like how the camo deco came out but it does give the desired effect. any pointers would be welcomed.

edit: ugh.. i just noticed a splotch on his boot.. I can't believe I missed that.. gah..

IG-72

Simply a repaint, all i did was snip part of 88's cone from the top of his head  :P

Speeder

I was limited by which mini I could put into the speeder based upon their stance, and how they were holding a gun and various other factors. This guy had a pretty neutral pose so I chose him to tool up a bit. He has his hand on the stick shift (is that what it is in SW?) and arm resting on the edge. I pretty much made it as background fodder for dioramas.

Sweet update Dimetrodon!

Rebel Commando -

Very nice.  You've really divulged into a of variety on these.  Usually I consider their cloaks to be green, but if they're not in a forest environment, your paint scheme makes sense.

IG-72 -

Nice job, I might paint his strap black.

Landspeeder -

Now this is cool because it adds a cool vehicle.  If you get another one of these landspeeders, I would suggest painting it greenish grey and add on a cannon.  Then you've got a military speeder.

Fun stuff Dimetrodon.  And good luck with those sleepless nights.   :(

I love that Rebel Commando Officer!  Great paint job on the cloak.
The landspeeder driver looks very natural, nice pose.

You're making me want to start painting Warhammer figures again!  ;)

I based the Commandos cloak on the Endor Luke scheme, because its rarely seen. The head isn't even glued on yet, hehe, I have to buy more  glue, I might repaint the helmet too.

Sweet update Dimetrodon!

Landspeeder -

Thanks! I do have another Landspeeder like that one but Plan to keep it as is, because it's the only other I have. But in the new minis set they put out a FLash Speeder with 2 Naboo drivers. looks nice.

I have been up for a good while now and will be going to sleep soon, hopefull waking up in the morning at a decent hour and then henceforth every day.

More SW Minis Customs, hehe. I also notice msot old photos don't show up... Oh well..

I simply painted the whole squad black and gave them their blue visors, which only Fixer seemed to have originally had. And then sprayed them with some Testors Dull Cote

This was the best group shot I was able to get, but really they aren't anything too special. Just something to pass the time.

To see what they originally looked like check out this Set Gallery (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=starwars/article/championsgallery)

They are about halfway down.

Dimetrodon it's great to see you update again.  It's a treat to see your work.

These guys look really good to me.  I'm amazed at how well you are able to paint mini figures, it's something I don't think I'd be able to do.

 :)

Cool, I remember those older ones, they are really well done... have you considered painting any of the hologram pack-in figures?

The Force Adept Assassin looks nice, I really like the color scheme.

Thanks!

I don't have any of the hologram figures. I probably would paint them if I did have them though, they are out of scale to the minis, but it doesn't matter. still something fun to do.

Hey Dime Ive got a couple of extra holo figs if you want them. I was planning to make a chess set but ive lost interest in it now. You want them theyre yours.

Excellent stuff BTW. I never was able to paint anything that small. All of my old school DnD miniatures and what not were always plain.

BUt I did have a Warhammer squad that was entirely black. ;D

BTW was that Force adept Assasin a Spoiler at one time?

Ennis. Is that your actual name, or are we a Punisher or Preacher fan?   ;)

Yes indeed it was a Spoiler. I don't really know the character well, just something I had around waiting to be modded.

As for the Hologram figures, What characters have been made anyway? I have no idea

And come to think of it I don't believe I have bought a SW figure since last year..
unless the Galactic Heroes count. hehe..
