Revenge of the Sith / Re: ROTS - Battle Arena Assortment.
« on: March 16, 2005, 02:27 PM »
I remember seeing an episode of the "Clerks" cartoon once where the guys from "Kids in the Hall" played "freaks" and said something that describes my feelings on these Battle Arenas after seeing the photos of the Sidious vs. Mace set loose at RS:

"Yipes.  Just yipes."

The static action poses of the initial 2002 Saga Collection 2 Jedi have not died, my friends, they have merely found a new home in a much more overpriced area.  And I love how the usually thorough RS archive photography is slim to none on these figures, with most of the few shots they have emphasizing packaging and the base and very little being done to show the actual figures (2 shots each).

See you on clearance for sure, Battle Arenas!  ::)

Special request, so that I'll know where to spend my cash right off the bat on April 2nd: can someone (Jared, this will probably be your domain since it seems you've gotten nearly all of the initial Collection 1 and Deluxe stuff, but others are encouraged to do so as well) who has the Collection 1 or Deluxe figures do a simple breakdown of each figure and how good/poor they are?  I'm talking about this type of rating:

COLLECTION 1 (examples):
01.  Obi-Wan Kenobi: pure crap
02.  Anakin Skywalker: pure crap
12.  Emperor Palpatine: passable

DELUXE (examples):
01.  Anakin/Vader: passable
02.  Obi-Wan/SBD: pure crap
03.  Grievous: excellent

...and so on and so forth.  Basically, just say whether it's worth picking them up on the first day or whether we should wait and pick them up at our convenience.  Or, apparently, in the case of the Deluxe Obi-Wan, on the inevitable clearance. :)

Revenge of the Sith / Re: 2005 Red Metallic Darth Vader @ Target
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:28 AM »
Let me get this straight:

-I get to wake up at 6:30 on a Saturday morning to get a ticket?
-I get to stand in line until the store opens at 8, most likely with some rather unpleasant smelling overweight guys who you can imagine saying "WORST...PROMOTION...EVER!"?
-I get to be laughed at by people driving by for this 90 minutes because of the fact that I am standing outside Target on Saturday morning for a toy?
-I get to pay over double the price of a regular figure for a fancy repaint/redeco of a 1997 figure while I'm on an already tight budget?
-I get to experience a feeling of wasting my time and money when I get home later that day from doing all this?

HELL YES, SIGN ME UP!   ::)

So, um, yeah, I guess the short version is that Target can have their "Lava Vader."  I guess this makes me 0 for 2 on the ROTS exclusive figure front, since there isn't a TRU within 75 miles of where I live and I'm not driving that for the "chance" at getting a figure.

Just a strange request: can anyone who is more gifted in matters of avatars than I get a screengrab of Yoda's "OH ****!" face (the one he makes for about a frame or two right before the lightning hits him in Palpatine's office in the trailer) that I could use for an avatar?   ;D

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Music of the Duel
« on: March 16, 2005, 09:17 AM »
Quote
Did you know that Episode IV and V had no music during the duels?  The sound of the lightsabers was deemed to be musical enough!  ************

My problem with Burtt and his "sound design" doesn't have as much to do with Williams not scoring scenes, but with Burtt deciding that scenes Williams has scored don't need music and that his sound effects should take center stage.  A perfect example of this is the first part of the arena sequence in AOTC (Anakin, Obi-Wan and Padme vs. Acklay, Reek, and Nexu): JW scored this entire sequence (it's all on the CD) but Burtt deemed it necessary to drop the entire score right up to the point where the Droidekas roll into the arena.  The really insulting part is that Burtt replaced Williams' music with his own generic percussion in the background.  He even talks about this on the AOTC DVD commentary.  Way to go Ben.   ::)

There are some parts where I think the film works without music pretty well, but the editing on the prequels has been so horrible as far as sound goes that it's almost embarassing.  I get the distinct impression that Burtt harbors something of a secret grudge toward JW for the degree of fame he has gotten from his film scores in general, if not only the SW films, while he isn't even mentioned in mainstream media when the sound effects are brought up.  I am not discounting the work that Burtt has done on the sound effects as it wouldn't be SW without them, but at the same time it pisses me off to see Burtt being so passive-aggressive in burying or hacking away at JW work so his own can be heard more prominently.

I mean, really, was there a reason for the music during the chase through Coruscant in AOTC to be edited the way it was, with haphazard looping?  Why did the end credits music for AOTC get hacked to pieces at all, since the music that made the soundtrack (which ends with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of Anakin's theme from TPM) was infinitely better and the exact same length?  Why was the music from the duel in TESB dropped completely in the carbon freezing chamber when, thematically, it made a point (just pull out the RCA or Sony 2-disc sets to hear what I'm talking about)?

Again, it's all so Ben Burtt could show everyone how big his penis is at the expense of John Williams' music.

Not necessarily confined to the duel, but it is the first official announcement of the ROTS soundtrack contents.  GH.com posted a brief note on the tracklist earlier today, but apparently Sony has sent out a full press release on the CD, which will include a 70 minute DVD that will include "videos" for each film's music, introduced by Ian McDiarmid.  I am waiting with baited breath for this to be released, and May 3 can't get here soon enough.

Read more about it at The John Williams Fan Network

And to keep it real, hey Burtt!  I got your turnip fart right over here!  :P

I've gradually moved away from my OCD (at least as far as SW collecting goes), but I've got to agree with you, Nataku: this is too much, too soon, too fast.  Hasbro cannot possibly think that *any* child out there is going to be able to collect all these figures, either from a financial or overall interest standpoint, and I have a feeling this will be the year that breaks SW toys because either one of two things will happen:

1.  Hasbro will finally see that the collectors are what fuels the line and due to their ongoing spite toward collectors, will say the line is "on hiatus" and essentially cancel it because of the impending overstocking and overproduction of ROTS toys.

or

2.  Collectors will scoff at Hasbro's action feature laden crapfest that is Collection 1 and concentrate on Collection 2, while kids won't touch anything at all from the film except lightsabers (as usual), and sales will be even worse than we already know they will be.  They will plan a whole lot more ROTS stuff for next year, but the line will be killed after the yearly financial statement because "SW performed very poorly for us at retail and we can no longer count on it for income since there will be no more films.  It is with this in mind that we are placing the line on indefinite hold."

Jeez, if us grown adults who actually have access to (some) disposable income are complaining about the breadth of figures being released all at once, how does Hasbro expect kids, who are lucky if they get a 5 dollar a week allowance, to look at all the other stuff in a toy aisle next to a crappy Yoda that spins and say "Oh yeah, I want Yoda."

Let's face it, and begin preparing for it: the ROTS line is the last spasm of a line that Hasbro wants to die, and they're doing their best to help that happen as soon as they can.

Just a couple of quick questions about the SBD you'd photographed for the archives, Jared.

1.  The way it looks in the photos, the SBD is basically the version from the Saga Deluxe Yoda set with a removable right arm and a retooled cannon arm from the Saga SBD.  Am I wrong in this assumption?  If I'm right, this is going to be saving me 6 bucks right off the top of things come 04/02.

2.  If it isn't the same sculpt as the Saga Deluxe version, does it have any additional articulation along the lines of the Saga SBD (as in the elbows and/or knees, specifically)?

3.  Do these pants make my butt look big?  :D

Completely unrelated to the SBD, the poster makes it look as if the Droideka coming later this year is a repack of the craptacular Saga version from 2002 that warmed pegs around here for about six months after its release.  Great! ::)

Other Collectibles / Re: Unleashed Again
« on: March 13, 2005, 08:57 PM »
To say that I am dancing about the figures definitely being "interactive" is an understatement.  I'm seriously considering just going out at midnight and buying the three Unleashed figures and waiting until the next day to get all the action figures.  Beating a dead horse, but three years ago, if you told me this line would be the highlight of my collecting, I'd have asked what drugs you were taking and why you weren't sharing. :)

This being said, the photos on GH.com look as if Hasbro cheaped out on the "lava" that comes with Anakin and Obi-Wan (being that they aren't as luminous and more "solid" if that makes any sense; I was anticipating material not unlike the jet pack exhaust on the Boba Fett), but nevertheless, they will look magnificent as the centerpiece of my Unleashed shelf (or shelves, as the case will no doubt be before long).

Revenge of the Sith / Re: RotS Product Leaks: Already?
« on: March 13, 2005, 08:52 PM »
Nearly every K-Mart I have been in for the last two years looks like it's on the verge of closing down.  Their selection in general is horrible, their former marketing dream (Martha) turned into a nightmare, and their prices are, on average, 2 or 3 percent higher than the other retailers.  And that's in the regular stock areas.

The toy sections are rarely stocked and when they are, it is of peripheral items and then in such large numbers that it takes up shelf space from the "quicker" selling items.  A K-Mart I went into today (I was hoping to find the new Unleashed) has gotten at most three cases of figures since this time last year: one case of the Yavin wave, one case of the OTC with Kenobi, Tusken, and Jawas, and one case of the repack wave from last year (Jedi Luke, TR Vader, Snowtrooper, SC Anakin, POC Fett on Saga cards).  They hang around for months on end, still at full price, and they are never clearanced.  No wonder the chain is hurting financially.

K-Mart would actually make more money by selling the stuff early since, come April 2nd, nobody is going to be paying 7 bucks for figures from them anyway.  If LFL comes down hard and says "No more ROTS figures for you this year", I don't think it would make much of a difference because even a three year old knows that 7 bucks for an Anakin is a bit different than 5 and a quarter across the street at Wal-Mart.

And for the millionth time, I'd like to just say that I find the idea of a release date being applied to toys as totally ridiculous.  I mean, there are times when they're released too far in advance (the X-Men, Spider-Man, and Hulk movie toys being released six or more months ahead of time being a case of this), but saying you can't sell TOYS until a particular date is even more asinine than the way Hasbro treats their stuff as if it is a state secret.

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Patience...
« on: March 11, 2005, 03:42 PM »
I actually consider myself to be very lucky in what I have found so far.  Sure, it's "only" the Tri-Fighter, Obi-Wan Jedi Starfighter, and Grievous Wheel Bike, but that's already three more things than I thought I'd be finding early this time around.

I did not find any Episode I merchandise prior to May 3, 1999, and even the rampant leaks of AOTC stuff did not enable me to get more than Happy Meal Threepio at a K-Mart on April 21, 2002.  I honestly thought that I would be empty-handed on ROTS stuff until 04/02/2005 as well, but that just goes to show that when you're not worried about it, then you will probably have more luck finding it.

That said, this lull has given me time to try and complete my Unleashed collection, and with the vehicles out of the way (for the most part), I won't feel like nearly as big of a nerd as I usually do walking through a Wal-Mart at 1 AM with a cart full of toys as I did for Episodes I and II. :)

On a completely unrelated note, any word on the release date for the soundtrack yet?

The Prequel Trilogy / A Truly Grievous Prank
« on: March 10, 2005, 07:37 PM »
I was going to put this in the "Creating General Grievous" thread, but this is such genius that I had to give it its own.  If it does need to be moved, mods, please feel free to do so.  This has made me laugh for nearly the last twenty minutes since I ran across the link and it's brilliant.  This is easily the greatest prank that has ever been played on certain individuals who break their legs putting their pants on and our "good buddy" PW's "other" site (TFN) was the first to basically propogate the rumor to a point where it was fast becoming fact.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I fell for it hook, line, and sinker, but I have a very small ego, and all I can say about this in regards to the "perps" is: WELL PLAYED, GENTLEMEN.  ;D

So, ladies and gentlemen of JD.com, I give you the greatest use of INTERNET to incite hilarity...

Revenge of the Sith / Re: Grievous' Wheel Bike
« on: March 8, 2005, 08:13 AM »
Just a quick question: has anyone been able to get the included Grievous (horror that he is) to sit in his chair and hold the controls correctly?  The controls and the footrests are made of a really soft rubber, and as yet I have been unable to get him to look right sitting there.  Any tips from anyone else out there?

By the way, all I can think of when I see this toy is the G.I. Joe RAH Cobra Buzz Boar.  I mean, "teeth" wheels, cannon on the side, same basic design elements, etc.  That being said, I thought the Buzz Boar was a really cool toy when I was a kid, and I think that this is very cool now.  The positioning of the control chair on the side seems a bit awkward (as opposed to the chair on the Buzz Boar being inside the vehicle), but overall, I think it's a cool toy.
