Watto's Junk Yard / Who's your favorite band?
« on: November 20, 2008, 09:21 AM »
I just got finished reading "Slash" by, Slash and his co-writer, Anthony Bozza.  It's a great read on his life if you are interested.

It got me to thinking about my favorite bands so I thought I'd pose this question for all.  Being a child born in the mid 70's, the mid 80's to 90's rock had the biggest influence on what I like to listen to this day.  I have handful of bands that I just love listening to and a few more that are catching my attention.

First, I'm a huge fan of the original Guns N Roses, with the original lineup.  I loved their albums up to the Use Your Illusion set.  I haven't listened to much of the new album, and don't really think I will.  What always got me where the cool guitar riffs and without Slash or Duff tearing it up, it just hasn't had the same place for me.  I've listened a lot lately to Velvet Revolver and think I'm becoming a fan.

I'm also a fan of Aerosmith, but none of the crap after the mid 90's...that **** all sounds the same.  I loved all their 70's and 80's stuff, with my favorite album being Permanent Vacation.  I have to claim having a guilty pleasure of Poison, but I can only stand the glam metal for so long, as so much of it sounds the same.

On a side note, I've been reinspired lately by reading the book and talking to a few buddies to pick up the guitar, and start something I just barely started a long time ago.  I run the soundboard for my church, I've run the sound before for a buddy when he had a band, and now I want to get back into the music thing and learn to do something else.  Years ago I tried the guitar, but didn't have a ton of dexterity in my fingers, and was more interested in playing ball than learning the guitar, well now I want to get back into it and actually do it this time.

Wow, I must be really bored already today.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Thanks to the Veterans

Thanks guys for the thoughts. That's all any veteran ever hopes for is somebody to just say thanks. It means the world to hear it.

And again, thanks to the fellow vets out there, home and abroad and let us not forget our fallen brothers/sisters on foreign battlefields.

I needed to take a break from the dry reading of The Right Stuff and I've been wanting to read this for a while, being a GnR fan and with the upcoming album and all. I've got to say this book is really a page turner.  I know that Slash had some help in the writing, but he seems to be a very intelligent person and the stories are absolutely astonishing...what's even more amazing is that he's still alive after everything he's done.

Watto's Junk Yard / Dogs returning from Iraq
« on: October 14, 2008, 10:58 AM »
Hopefully we can leave this link up here.  I don't want this to be any discussion of politics, war, or anything else.  I'm an animal lover and for whatever reason this story really go to me and I really would like for this dog to come home and be with a new owner who has cared for it while she was stationed in Iraq.  Please sign
this petition and make your voice heard that you'd also like this dog to come to the US.

Saw it and loved it.  I had to rewind the DVR to watch one more time.

There you go.  One of my best friend's dad owns an old Stearman that he keeps out at Possum Kingdom airport.  It was the predecessor to the AT6 Texan that was used for pilot training.  The same guy helps manage The David Nicklas foundation, a charity for heart disease and a donor support group (this guy had a heart transplant and is going on 16 years now).  His foundation used to own an F86 Sabre and an F4U Corsair that they used to fly around to various air shows and for a donation to the foundation you could get some time in the plane.

Sadly I never got the chance to fly in either of the high performance fighters, but I did get to actually fly the Stearman this summer when we were out at the lake.

On the photography note, those are fantastic pics.  I wish I could find the pics from when I went to Bastogne.  My grandfather fought there as part of the relief force in the M18 Tank Destroyer and later the upgraded M36.  Matter of fact, I'll be getting his unit patch tattooed on my back or shoulder sometime soon.  At some point when I complete his ribbon rack I'm going to post the pic over in the WWII memorabilia thread.

Rob, were you referring to me?

Awesome looking stuff you've got there.  Next weekend in FW there is an air show.  I won't be able to make it due to parents being in town and we will be shopping for baby stuff, but it has always been a great show.  My reserve unit used to pull security out there, not sure if they still do though.

I finally have gotten my first tat.  I've been waiting forever to do it.  This is an eagle and crossed runways that was on my beret when I was in the Air Force.  I wanted something from my service days and finally picked this here.

Amen to both of the above posts.

I hated the season of Earl in jail.  My wife hated it and we just watched it to have something to do.  The season premier was pretty good, but the second one was absolutely hilarious.  I too laughed throughout the entire thing.  I'm really looking forward to this season.

Now, if someone could do something about what happened on ER...

I can't remember where it was I read them, but I did read a few spoilers.  I'll just say that I'm stoked for Thursday night.  Kind of sucks because I'm playing softball at 8, so I'm going to have about 4-5 hours of DVR'd shows and I'll get through them over the weekend.

I finished "Brave Men, Dark Waters," and now I've got two books I'm kind of working through.  "The War" by Ken Burns.   I never got to watch the PBS special and really wish I had.  Being a huge WWII buff and possibly getting my masters in it, this book has been fascinating dealing with the day to day lives of people.

The other book, "The Right Stuff," by Tom Wolfe.  I just started this, so not much to comment on yet.  However, I've read Chuck Yeager's autobiography and absolutely love the guy.  I've heard the book is a lot of sensationalized history with a bit of bending of the facts thrown in with no actual interviews with the astronauts.  That kind of kills me.  But I loved this movie when I saw it as a kid and want to see it again when I finish the book.  I've always been fascinated with the early space program, so we'll see how this turns out.

^^^That's brave going through the LOTR trilogy more than once. :) I love to read, but it was all I could stand to get through those books once.  It may be a really, really long time before I can trek through them again.

Currently reading "Brave Men, Dark Waters" by Orr Kelly.  It traces the history of the SEAL teams from their days as UDT's and the training for that and how they got their inspiration from the USMC's Scout's and Raiders from WWII.  It goes into their actual participation in combat during the Korean War and leads up to their actual creation by JFK in 1961.  It doesn't cover today's conflicts around the world, but does include the Panama invasion and their limited participation in Desert Shield/Desert Storm.  IMO, Kelly is one of the foremost authors of special operations.

I just want to know why the hell it's taking so long if the record company has the album and when the **** we're going to get it in our hands.  I think all the hype that's surrounding this album may in effect kill the willingness of fringe fans to buy it. This may end up being a case of trying to hype something because it's really not that good.

I haven't listened to all the tracks that have been "made available", but from what I have listened to, I'm not all that stoked or excited about this album. For whatever reason, a lot of the stuff just doesn't have that GnR sound to it...at least in the traditional sense of remembering AFD and how badass that album was, some of the stuff doesn't even compare to the mediocre stuff from the Illusions albums.
