Title: Wal-Mart Green Leader A-Wing Starfighter
Post by: Ryan on February 16, 2008, 03:59 PM
As noted on the front page word has come in from Jeff that we can expect to see a Wal-Mart exclusive A-Wing on the shelves this year. I'm pretty excited for this myself. The A-Wing has become one of my favorite fighters lately. I'm really happy with the green SAGA version, and even the POTF2 version still holds it own. I'd be happy to add yet another one to my fleet. We should have some pictures a little later today. :)

Was there an exclusive pack-in?

No mention, yet... ;)

I'd wager we'd see a pilot, as I think most exclusive ships do seem to come with at least one figure anymore whereas the $20 pricepoint ships do not.

There is a pilot... arvyl crynyd.  What was pictured was a the new A-wing/Tycho body with a new head...

Standard RED ship. Hmm, I might pass on this. Only thing  I'd want would be the figure.

Pics will pop up once Hasbro sends the presentation out to the sites to share...

The helmet looks sweet.  Finally, a real Arvel Crynyd figure!!!  Now if we just had an Executor for him to ram....   ;D

I am really surprised that they didn't paint this one up differently for this release - it looks almost identical to the POTF2 version. Which isn't a bad thing really, the paint op even back then was pretty good.
Title: Re: Wal-Mart A-Wing Starfighter
Post by: Jesse James on February 18, 2008, 02:34 AM
If it's to be Arvel Crynyd, which it 100% appears to be, as the helmet is new and accurate to the cockpit footage A-Wing Pilots we see (whereas Tycho is accurate to the briefing scene A-Wingers we see of course), then this ship is accurate...

Crynyd's fighter was red markings like the original.  Not sure which film prop was used, however it was destroyed so it's likely the paintjob didn't feature the same "replaced panels" and such, so this ship looks just different enough to be another ship in the same squadron, as it should.  I'm really stoked on that.

I have about 8 A-Wings, so this'll just be a happy single purchase.  :)  Glad to finally get the death blow of the Executor in plastic, complete with his fighter.

I wish this featured electronic motion sensor screaming sounds. When you shake the toy or spin it you hear Arvel Scream "AAAHHHHHHH!!!!!", that would be a sweet selling feature!

I really hope they make that black X-Wing pilot from ROTJ! He went out like a champ, he did not scream like a bitch. Sparks flew past his head and he spoke in a confident tone..."She's gonna blow!!!!"
Now that's a Starfighter pilot! Arvel pissed his pants and screamed like a women, I will never forget that.

On another note, it is nice to see Arvel's correct helmet get tooled up. I am also glad the A-Wing sports classic colors for fleet building purposes. I am not too keen on the McQuarrie colored version.

I'm not sure what to do about this one, as I have the POTF2 A-Wing already, but I would like to add Arvel to the collection :).  I guess it will depend on how easy it is to find (and price), although I guess it wouldn't be horrible to have more than 1 A-Wing anyways.  We'll see.

I've got to disagree with the chump label... His scream was not a frightful "AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!" it was more of a battle cry. He wasn't screaming cause he was terrified, he was scream to strike terror in the hearts of the people on that bridge (someone forgot to tell him that there was no way they could hear him though.)

That being said, Mak Case is probablly still on top of my wishlish of un-made Rebel pilots.

Haha- wow, I just have one and it gave me pause to purchase; but the new headsculpt and accurate helmet are great, not to mention one A-Wing isn't enough for the collection.  Like you mentioned, it appears to have a different paint app of the same color scheme.

Yeah, me too. Got a bunch of 'em during the great TRU clearance of '98.

Still look forward to this one, if only for the pilot.

It's one of my favorite Hasbro ships...  Scale's right, the details are incredible for today, much less 1985, and the new pilot's outstanding...  I'm filling out the older ones as best I can with Tycho's and hopefully some good headcasts someday.  Gotta add some helmet casts now too vary it up a bit. ;)

How great would it have been had Hasbro given it this paintjob (courtesy of Ryan1982 at RS):

Title: Re: Wal-Mart A-Wing Starfighter

I'd agree, if it were more accurate to a film prop...

(http://killbyte01.iespana.es/references/sw/ships/alliance/a-wing/10-other/006.jpg)  (http://killbyte01.iespana.es/references/sw/ships/alliance/a-wing/10-other/1057053212_3.jpg)

Not to say it's a bad paintjob or anything though...  It's just excessive.  I think I've seen that custom elsewhere at some point and the maker used a new technique he'd learned to get the look he did (layered), and it worked pretty neat to heavily weather the fighter...  In ROTJ though the props weren't that heavily weathered/worn looking.  They had a used and worn look, but it was more one that also showed care/maintenance as well...

A good earth-ish example is decoing an early-war German fighter compared to a late-war German fighter.  In the early war the Luftwaffe took pretty good care of their planes, but the daily wear-and-tear of war was evident with a placed part showing discoloration, or a little grime...  By late in the war though, their airforce was so decimated and unable to function, that the few planes they could get in the air generally showed heavy wear...  Really only the new jets they put to the air as a last gasp of fight were taken good care of on the ground...  Other planes saw heavy neglect.

The A-Wing props pictured above show fighters that, while having seen miles of war through replaced armor and things, the ship seems to get a fresh coat of paint from time to time, or a wash down to clean it up a bit.

With this fighter being Crynyd's, I'm pretty happy (with the early shots anyway) to see Hasbro trying to be accurate to that fighter from the film.  I like seeing it different, but similar, to the fighter we got.  The paintjob on the original ship was really outstandingly accurate in every way, save for the cockpit detailing.  May be one of the best ships Hasbro's ever done in the line I think overall.

Of course that's not meant to put down the customizer's ship, it's pretty slick looking, but it certainly looks like a fighter that's been either neglected, or it's on the cusp of getting an overhaul in the hangars so it can return to the front lines some day. ;)

"New Cockpit"?  I wonder what modifications they made to it...   ???
Title: Re: Wal-Mart Green Leader A-Wing Starfighter
Post by: Jesse James on June 19, 2008, 03:31 PM
Flight controls and maybe some added detailing to the sides and things, rather than stickers?  Cramping the cockpit up a bit would help the A-Wing as the pilot jostles about inside now.  I'm guessing at least flight controls/stick though.  And I think that rocks...  It's a little bonus.  I'm down for a few of these I think.  I already have like 6 of the POTF2 but this is one I'd like at least 2 of and maybe a spare to boot.  It'll free up some of the red ones to repaint.

A little, but we have a grimed up one too, so I'm not too disappointed.  It's like getting one that got a fresh coat of squad colors and another that just hasn't gotten his overhaul yet.

I originally mainly wanted this for the figure as well, but I wouldn't mind having another A-Wing either.  I just have a POTF2 one, and they are small enough I could handle having a couple more.  I'm curious to see what the "new cockpit" entails, and it does look pretty spiffy all packaged up like that (thanks Jeff).  Has there been any word if this will be out on the 26th as well?  I thought originally it was planned to be, but I read (I think on GH's forums) that someone heard it was being delayed until November/holiday time.  I guess since the boxed image has surfaced, its unlikely it would be that far off.

I'm glad to see they're using the Tycho body with just a different head.  That makes the pack-in figure better.  I thought they might try to reuse part of the POTF2 pack-in figure...that was the one that jostled around the cockpit.  My Tycho figure fits in there just fine.

This looks sweet!
If I can find them, I will buy at least 2 of these, maybe 3. I would not mind ditching the old POFT2 version if the overall deco is the same to have the upgraded cockpit. I may even buy an extra to upgrade the green version from Target. I upgraded all of my Y-Wing guns & Pilots so I have a matching fleet with all of the different decos. I love they have the other A-wing helmet design in there, I just hate that this is a WM exclusive vehicle.

I think I'm in for one, mostly due to the helmet, but like others have said, another A-Wing would be nice too.  I have my original POTF2 version hanging from the ceiling, so this will likely join it!

I think this will definitely be available on July 26th, I can't see them NOT making this available. Guess sleeping in front of the WalMart after hitting midnight madness at TRU will be in the cards for me this year. In 2005, it was sleeping in front of the Target to make sure I was first in line to score some Lava Reflection Vaders.

I didn't notice this on the fall release schedule that was released this week, so I'm guessing it is not going to be available next week?  Since we've seen packaged samples and everything, we know it is on the way, but I guess I'd be fine if it waited until later in the Fall.  Its not like there isn't anything to buy next weekend anyways ;).

The helmet really does look nice. It would have been nice to see that in with the Tycho figure as well.  I was hoping to see this this week with the rest of the 7/26 goodies but my wallet can certainly wait it ou until November. This may be the first ship that I'll pick up multiples. I'll probably have to grab at least two of them. I may even grab four so I have a nice little flight of them.

That's what we had heard, but I thought in the pics from SDCC it looked like its nametag had a 7/26 release date.  Personally, I sort of hope its November.  I'd be ok with a little less to buy/hunt for this weekend, and I sort of want one of these A-Wings/pilot.

I think they might be typos on the little signs - the SDCC presentation which is just a PPT file and can easily be changed, has the B-Wing on shelf 10/1 and the A-Wing on shelf 11/1.

So which is it? I guess tonight we'll find out for sure. If the B-Wing is there then we know the PPT is wrong and the little signs are right, if not, then I guess the PPT is.

I'd bet even money that the A-Wing and B-Wing come out later this year and not tonight.  They don't really fit with the overall theme of Clone Wars or the Legacy offerings.  Plus we probably would've seen them leak out by now if they were due out tonight.

Clicky to check it out!

The Arvel figure is the highlight, however I'm curious to see the ship upgrades in person and just how unique the paintjob is compared to the POTF2 ship.  The POTF2 is remarkably similar/styled to a film prop, however several A-Wing props had unique and noticeably different paintjobs.  I like the variety we're getting then with a different A-Wing that will fit with the original nicely.

Head on out to our front page to check it out if you wish...  I've heard a couple reports (no pics yet though) of these being found out West.

I really wish I could nab two of these actually.  I like the slightly cleaner deco to them.

FYI - I just picked up 3 of these this morning, they were located on the top shelf above the figures (Along with the Gunship).
$29.99 is the price, I was a bit taken back as I thought this was going to be $20-25, the real shocker is the Gunship ringing up at $49.99! I did not get to open it yet but it looks really good, the new cockpit & pilot look pretty spiffy. Shame the price is not.

Jeez you sure you weren't at Target  ;) those prices are outrageous.  I wonder if it has to do with being so close to Christmas, but with the way the economy is rolling good luck Wal-mart and good luck Hasbro.

Yeah, if those prices hold out, that's a little disappointing.  I had planned on picking up an A-Wing, but really didn't think it would be $30.  Heck, a ship like this could really be put out into the basic $20-ish pricepoint "starfighter assortment" alongside all the Jedi Starfighters.  For some reason it seems like its really tough to get Hasbro to put the OT vehicles out in that line (besides Vader's TIE and the small wing TIE).

Other than the new helmet and head, this figure really didn't need to be included if it jumped the price up to $30.  I figure most people who want this ship probably bought the A-Wing pilot already (I got 4 or so myself).

Got a new cockpit too, ala the B-Wing.  I'm not saying I disagree on the cost, though I don't think $30 is horrible for a $20 ship & figure...  It's not great, but it's not the worst deal otu there this year.  I'd leave that to the Lars Homestead battlepack or really any myriad of other screwjobs from Hasbro in 2008.

Though I'm not happy with the cost, it's not too over priced like the Gunship. Setting aside the fact that 90% of the product is a re-release, we're getting a $20 ship with a $7 figure with a slight modification to the ship. With inflation, the price isn't outrageous. The gunship, on the other hand, is a blatant rip off.

I'd still like to see images of the new cockpit.  If it's as good as the new B-Wing cockpit or that of the V-19, I'll be impressed.

But $29.99, huh?

I have to agree with you completely here. I wasn't sure about getting the A-wing before. Knowing that WM exclusives in my area dry up fast, I thought about picking it up when I saw it (still haven't seen it yet). But I may just pass. It's not THAT different enough to buy it, and I'm not concerned for the pilot. He may come out in a Legends line down the line sometime. If not, I won't lose sleep of it.

The gunship price is ridiculous though. I want the ship, but will not pay that price, much in the same way that I want to Lars Homestead but won't pay that much for what appears to be not much more than a vacuum form mold and three old figures.

Very cool...  No control yoke there that I see (those handles on the sides don't really look like flight controls to me), but still fantastic and detailed.  Looks almost like a cup holder on the left. :P

I took a special trip out to Wal-Mart to look for this last night and came back empty handed. I'm really excited to pick up this latest version especiallu after seeing these new cockpit shots.

I wonder if we are ever going to see Crynyd on a basic card? I'd love more helmets like his to vary up my little A-Wing pilot squad a bit.

Just got mine-- looks a lot like the 1997 one, but 50% more expensive.  The new controls are neat but it seems it requires more finagling than I'm willing to do at the moment to get the pilot to grab on to them.  It looks cool, though.

(It could use a new Jann Tosh to go in there.  I'm just saying, is all.)

Saw a ton of these today.  They're neat looking, but not worth $30 considering I bought four of them for $5 each back in the TRU clearance days.

Nice pics, panels on computers must be depicted as part of the sculpt instead of stickers :)
I hope they´ll do the same for Vader Tie advanced one day; and for an ultimate Luke´s X-Wing Fighter.

Seems like Tycho´s body is the current point of evolution in A wing pilots.
Must serve as a model to improve other pilots bodies.

Seems like this is the way they're going. All we need is a taller X-wing body and a new Y-Wing body now.

I agree with Sprry.  I can't justify spending $30 on this.  No way... this ship will be on clearance before too long, I think.  It's just not that cool for the pricetag... especially considering how the POTF2 ones were so cheap on clearanance.

Considering this is $30, and the Gunship is $50, at Wal-Mart of all places, I'm beginning to think that TRU isn't the culprit for the high price on the Lars Homestead (which I contend the Lars Homestead is a better deal at $50 than the Gunship is since the Gunship has now been released FIVE TIMES).

I don't know, the Wal-Mart policy seems to be 'wait forever, and then when there is only one left in the store and its been opened w/ the figure stolen, we'll put it on "clearance ($0.50 off)" '

And some sucker will buy it!

I won't doubt that, I just think their clearance policy on what should be fast moving products isn't very good.  If they have a product that they'll stock for a long period of time, I can understand that not being put on clearance, but Wal-Mart seems to keep items around too long in the hopes they'll make an extra sale or two at full price.  Items like video games, movies, many toys, books, etc.  Basically any item where the is a fairly constant stream of new items coming in.  They should have a more intelligent clearance policy and move that stuff out to get newer things in.  But then again I'm not looking at this as the typical Wal-Mart shopper.

I like the revised A-Wing, I like the pilot, not sure I like it $30 though.

Our Wal-Mart is the same way with clearancing - as in, they rarely, if ever, use them.  Sure, some SW items hit clearance, but it often takes a looong time, and even then, the prices aren't anything amazing.  I did see some VTSC Han Endors, Greedos, and Sandpeople down to $3 at one point, and also saw the GH Falcon last year get dropped to $23 (from $30) - but not much else.  I think they might still have some of the Jabba's Dancers packs there for $15.

Post by: Jesse James on October 14, 2008, 04:26 PM
Pretty much the same here.  One WM I visit frequently has a huge clearance section that's been up for about 2 years now.  In it they have VTSC and V30AC figures (yes, both) for $.02 less than retail.  They have Droid 2-packs for $.02 less than retail.  They have 30AC figures for full retail but clearance stickers on them.  They have Tin sets for full price.

I did get some of the military figure 2-packs from the line I collect for $3.50, which is off the usual $8 price.  That's not bad at all (got others for $5 at another WM I visit).  I've gotten deals on some of the other military stuff in the past too, some of it never even making it to the sales floor for full price because the manager is clearly a dip****.

SW **** though, I've rarely had good luck on.  I got some VOTC Stormtroopers for $7...  I think that was the last great clearance deal I got at a WM store.
Title: Re: Wal-Mart Green Leader A-Wing Starfighter
Post by: CHEWIE on October 14, 2008, 05:08 PM
I think it all depends on the store.

Different managers handle their clearance items differently... I hit about 4-5 Wal-Marts on a semi-regular basis.  One of them never marks things down, and when they do, it's like 5-10% off.  Another knocks them down big time... case in point one store I go to, here's some of the deals I've gotten there over the past few years -

ROTS figures - $1.00 each (all kinds of characters)
ROTS mid size vehicles - $7.00 each (mostly Grievous Wheelbike)
VOTC figures - $2.00 each (mostly Han)
VSTC figures - $2.00 each (Han and Greedo)
SAGA2 figures - $2.50 each (all kinds of characters)
TAC figures - $3.00 each (TFU army builder galore)
TAC Max Rebo Band 5-figure sets - $4.00 each (both sets)
TAC Comic Packs - $3.50 each (mostly Wookiee/Clone wave)
GI JOE Comic Packs - $2.50 each (passed on those actually, all kinds of them)

I hit that Wal-Mart about once a week, and usually hit the clearance section first.   :)

I think it all depends on the store.

Yeah, Walmart is totally hit-or-miss on clearance, as the prices are not always set by corporate.  That's why you see some stuff blown out quickly in some areas, while other areas still have some 2006 exclusives on the shelves/pegs.

I've never had very good luck with Walmart clearance, but I see/read enough reports to know that good deals do happen for some folks...
Title: Re: Wal-Mart Green Leader A-Wing Starfighter
Post by: Jesse James on October 14, 2008, 07:08 PM
To the best of my knowledge WM stores are given set prices they CAN lower items to, but the manager can choose basically any % from the low sent by corporate on up to full price...  Basically if they don't feel the need to blow it out to make room, they won't.

I picked this up yesterday at an out of town Wal-Mart. I was really looking forward to it since I've never owned an A-Wing and I never found the A-Wing Pilot at retail last year. This was pretty much worth every penny. It's an outstanding vehicle, the new and improved cockpit looks nice, and Arvel Crynyd is an EXCELLENT figure, probably the best pack-in figure ever. It's without doubt one of my favorite figures of the year. ;D

I checked both of our local WMs for this over the weekend as well, and no sign of them here yet either.  One store did have the Gunships out, but that was about it.  Maybe these are getting set out a bit later (with a few exceptions obviously).  Hopefully they won't be too tough to find, or they'll pop up online, because although I do have the POTF2 version - I wouldn't mind getting one of these as well.

I don't know if we can really know this for sure, but does anyone know if this is still on its way to some stores?  From online reports, it sounds like it was really spotty, and although it is listed at WM.com's site - it does say "not available online".  I sort of wanted to pick one of these up, but none of the stores in our area (even surrounding towns) seemed to ever get these in.  We've seen the Gunships, but never any A-Wings.  I keep hoping they're still on the way, maybe post-reset or something.  I have the earlier POTF2 version, but it sounds like this new version is pretty spiffy, and it would be nice to have the Celchu figure as well.

I've only seen the A-Wings at 2 WMs.  One of which still has a small endcap of them at $29.99.  I have no freakin clue what happened to all of the Gunships though, but apparently $49.99 wasn't too high of an asking price.

well one of my wally's had 4 of them in clearance section, but for full price.  I've been checking periodically to see if the price goes down.  I got one that I've yet to open with reciept.  Here's hoping they go 50% and I can return the full price one and get 2. ;D
