Title: Modern Vintage - Waves 4,5,6?
Post by: CHEWIE on April 2, 2004, 03:00 PM
What would everyone's opinions be if Hasbro decided to go nuts and product three more waves of Modern Vintage figures?  I might have mixed feelings about it, but here's some figures I would like to see them make for this if it came true:

WAVE 4 (ANH)

- Grand Moff Tarkin
- Tusken Raider
- Owen Lars
- ???

WAVE 5 (ESB)

- Luke Skywalker (Bespin duel)
- Admiral Piett
- Han Solo (precarbon)
- ???

WAVE 6 (ROTJ)

- Emperor Palpatine (silk robe)
- Royal Guard (silk robe)
- Bib Fortuna
- Scout Trooper

Thoughts or ideas?

I wouldn't buy them, but here goes!   ;D

Wave 4 (ANH):
Grand Moff Tarkin
Wedge Antillies
Jawas 2 Pack
R5-D4

Wave 5 (ESB)
SA Snowtrooper w/ latex mask (well, I'd buy him)
Han Solo in Carbonite
Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder
Princess Leia Hoth

Wave 6 (ROTJ)
The Emperor (soft goods)
SA Scout Trooper
Super Delxue Darth Vader w/ 2 piece removable helmet
SA Luke Skywalker Final Duel

I'm thinking there needs to be a vintage counterpart cardback for the figures (assuming they card each ANH figure on SW ones, ESB on ESB cards, etc, which makes this a bit tougher to do. So I put a little spin on it, and suggest 3 first release cards and one POTF for each movie:

ANH
- Tusken Raider (Sandpeople)
- Chewbacca
- Luke Stormtrooper Disguise (POTF)

ESB
- Rebel Commander (Hoth)
- AT-AT Commander
- Han Solo in Carbonite Chamber (POTF)

ROTJ
- Princess Leia (Boushh Disguise)
- Biker Scout
- Luke Skywalker (Endor Battle Poncho) POTF

EDIT: (I really want the Endor Luke so we can have a super-articultated Jedi Luke without the tunic.

My 4, 5, and 6 would go something like this....

ANH
-Tarkin
-Death Star Trooper
-*drum roll* Rebel Fleet Trooper
-Generic Rebel X-Winger (Blue emblems, black visor)

ESB
-Hoth Han Solo
-Luke Skywalker (Snowspeeder Pilot)
-Hoth Rebel Soldier
-Hoth Imperial Soldier

ROTJ
-Han Endor (Trench Coat)
-Luke Endor
-Leia Endor
-Biker Scout

Of course, I'd also like all these to see wider release too, especially the army builders in 3-packs with head variations.  :)

I'm of the opinion these should be vintage updates as well, and main(ish) characters to boot. So, with that, I'll try to pick some good 'uns:

ANH
-Tusken Raider
-Greedo
-Jawa/R5-D4 2 pack
-X-Wing Pilot (with Luke/Wedge/Biggs variant heads?)

TESB
-Bespin Leia
-Bespin Han
-Bespin Luke
-Bespin Boba

ROTJ
-Bib Fortuna
-Ewok 2-pack
-Emperor(the only real no-brainer of the bunch)
-Admiral Ackbar

I really think a Tarkin would make tons of sense, but he wasn't vintage, so what can you do? I also like the idea of a Stromtrooper disguise Luke, especially if he was made "shorter" than a regular Stormie.

(Oh, and the second go-around is MSRPed at $4.99--hey if we're wishing, why not?)

Those are some very good ideas guys.  Spuffy, would you not buy them because of the overprice $10 stuck on these?    I'd rather them be just $5 too.

I think a Snowspeeder pilot Luke would be great like you said Jesse.  With how bad I've wanted Hasbro to redo that figure I can't believe I didn't add it to my list. :-\

Yeah, the $10 is just out of the ballpark for me.  Paying $10-15 for Buffy or DC Direct figures is pushing it, so $10 for a tiny SW fig is out of the question.

On the issue of whether these should stick to vintage predecessors, I say if they do a second wave, it should offer those figures that were never done, like Tarkin.  And just for fun, here's what that would look like if I ran things:

Wave 4 (ANH):
Grand Moff Tarkin
Wedge Antillies
SA Sandtrooper
SA Han Solo in Stormtrooper Disguise

Wave 5 (ESB):
Luke Skywalker Medical Frigate
Princess Leia Medical Frigate
Smuggler Lando
ICMG  ;)

Wave 6 (ROTJ)
Super Deluxe Removable Helmet Darth Vader
Slave Girl Princess Leia
Yoda Spirit
Oola

I'd much prefer to see the line left to it's limited nature (and with the price, it probably will), but if it continued, I want some freakin Ewoks. And a Jawa.

So, I guess I'll go with this:

ANH:
Tusken Raider
Jawa
R5-D4
Greedo

ESB:
Ugnaught
Snowtrooper
Zuckuss
4-LOM

ROTJ:
Chief Chirpa
Logray
Wicket
Teebo
Lumat
Paploo

:)

Yeah, I kind of make my list(s) on these with the single intent that they get re-released on regular cardbacks.  There's no excuse not to, considering the mold toolings would cost less to make them more available for the cheaper price.

If there were more waves of the "Vintage" OTC line, they would almost certainly be figures that were made the first time around.  I'll limit my choices to them.

WAVE 4 - ANH
-Luke Skywalker - X-Wing Pilot
-Stormtrooper
-Tusken Raider
-Momaw Nadon (Hammerhead from vintage line)

WAVE 5 -TESB
-Han Solo - Bespin
-R2-D2 - Sensorscope
-AT-AT Driver
-Zuckuss

WAVE 6 - ROTJ
-Princess Leia Organa - Combat Poncho
-Han Solo - Carbonite Chamber (POTF, technically)
-Emporer's Royal Guard
-The Emporer

I'd definitely like to see more figures done in the style of the upcoming VOTC assortment, however I'd rather see them at the normal pricepoint ;).  If they were released like the announced waves (vintage cardbacks, "based" off of vintage figures, main-ish characters)...these would be my choices (However, I'd like to see Tarking, Snowspeeder Luke, etc. if the cardback didn't matter).

A New Hope
Tusken Raider
Luke Skywalker - X-Wing Pilot
Jawa
Hammerhead

Empire Strikes Back
SA Hoth Snowtrooper
Possible Bespin Luke (non bloodied version)
Zuckuss
SA Hoth Trooper

Return of the Jedi
SA Endor Han Solo w/Trenchcoat (favorite figure as a kid, still waiting for a decent modern version)
Emperor w/cloth robe (articulated knees for sure would be nice)
Endor Luke Skywalker/Endor Leia (either one would be nice, SA w/cloth)
Leia in Boussh Disguise (just like to see this one re-made)

There are others I'd like to see as well, but I guess I'm thinking of "ultimate", super-articulated versions of characters I'd like to see.  I too would like to see many more Ewoks, a new Bib Fortuna, maybe a Royal Guard w/cloth, and possibly a new Hoth Han Solo that isn't so pre-posed or action-featured.  If they were all as well done as the first three waves look to be, there would be a lot of figures I'd like to see.....not at the $10 pricepoint though.  I also left some figures off the list that we already have good versions of, or that are in other "movie" assortments in VOTC already.  For example, upcoming Bespin Leia, recent Hoth Luke, recent Jedi Luke....VOTC already has a version of Chewie, Vader, Stormie, and the droids as well, so I'll leave those as the "definitive" versions....although a removable helmet Vader would be neat too...just change the head on the VOTC version :).

2. Jawa (cloth robe)
3. X-Wing Luke
4. Rebel Fleet Trooper(new Card)

Wave 5

2. General Veers (removeable armor)
3. Carobnite/Bespin Han
4. Rebel Echo Base Commander

Wave 6

1. Oola(new Card)

Now that Hasbro has shown us that the vast majority of the OTC line is going to be recarded rehashes, the idea of begging for more VOTC styled figures here is looking more and more promising!  First off though, I would at the very least like to see Hasbro throw a POTF wave out there too, to go along with waves 1, 2, and 3,, since that definitely represents a separate, but very important, segment of the vintage line of figures.  So if we were stuck with just four more figures for a POTF supplemental wave (with the VOTC soft goods theme and good custom fodder in mind), I would probably want:

Now if I could actually get 4 more from each movie - Waves 4, 5, and 6 as Justin's asking about here, I think I would go with something along these lines:

ANH:
ESB: (this one's a toughie)
ROTJ:
POTF: (not necessarily corresponding with the vintage line)
Really not holding out too much hope for any of this actually happening though, but maybe Hasbro will surprise us with a nice little 4-figure POTF supplemental wave...

An interesting proposal, I would have to say they would stick with figures which have vintage counterparts, but I also like the idea of adding POTF to the set, so here's what I'm going to go with:

Wave 4 ANH:
Tusken Raider
Greedo
X-Wing Pilot Luke
Stormtrooper Luke (POTF)

Wave 5 ESB:
Snowtrooper
AT-AT Commander (General Veers w/ Removable Armor)
Hoth Rebel Soldier
R2-D2 w/ Sensorscope AND Lightsaber and whatever other greebies we can get attached to/coming out of him (POTF specifically the Pop-up Saber R2 card)

Wave 6 ROTJ:
Jedi Luke w/ cloth tunic, cloth poncho, 3 swappable right hands, Endor helmet, cloth cloak, lightsaber w/ removable blade, blaster
Emperor's Royal Guard
Bib Fortuna
Carbonite Han (POTF)

Perhaps this would be a perfect spot for a certain Frozen Dairy Chef from the Bespin Gantry ;)
