Title: Official Television Thread
Post by: Brian on January 16, 2004, 08:36 AM
I thought it might be interesting to see what types of television shows everyone enjoys out there (even if it is embarassing), or even if you just want to post something interesting, or a Star Wars reference, that you might have seen on TV. (For example, if anyone saw That 70s Show last night, there was a couple SW references on there). Anyways, my wife and I are tv/movie people I guess. Although we aren't couch potatoes in the true sense (we both work full time and exercise at least an hour a day), our evenings are pretty much dedicated to watching the tube together. A few of our favorite shows to watch include (I guess I'll go by days):

Sunday: On Fox, Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Arrested Development (the wife also enjoys American Dreams, but I usually only see the second half due to Simpsons) Also, lately we have been watching the show "Home Movies" on adult swim (Cartoon Network). It just started airing again, and we find it quite funny.

Monday: Still Standing, Everybody Loves Raymond (CBS)

Tuesday: Nothing really in particular, but we do sometimes watch the show Happy Family on NBC, and According to Jim on ABC.

Wednesday: Fox night, again...That 70s Show is a favorite, and although I might get made fun of for this, we both really enjoy "the O.C." Started watching it with the wife, now we're both hooked :P.

Thursday: As cliche as it sounds...we always watch Friends. We also catch Will and Grace some of the time, but haven't been overly enthused about it for awhile. We are BIG fans of the show Scrubs (one of the funniest shows on TV I think)...but it hasn't been on lately because of that Trump show.

Friday: Not much on this night I guess. If we're home, we usually watch "Life with Bonnie" (I think that's what it is called). Pretty funny. Also seem to watch Dateline quite a bit on Fridays, if we haven't rented or gone to movies.

Saturday: Other than some sports during the day, it is pretty much a TLC night for us (laugh if you will). We watch home shows such as "Trading Spaces" and "Clean Sweep". We also catch Saturday Night Live if it is new.

Reruns: We consistently watch Seinfeld reruns (our favorite), as well as Friends, Simpsons, and some of That 70s Show. We also catch Family Guy and Futurama on adult swim every night. We occasionally watch us some Letterman and Conan O'Brien as well.  As far as shows that aren't currently on, we used to watch that Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica show on MTV.

My TV watching has dropped considerably when I went to college, I'll try and catch the local nightly news and Letterman usually everyweek night

Sunday: NFL, The Simpsons (If I remember I record it, wifey won't let me watch in front of the boy), Curb Your Enthusiasm
Monday: MNF usually no matter who is playing, Raymond in the off season
Tuesday: Nada
Wednesday: Law and Order (I still like this show even though it hasn't been the same since Angie Harmon left :()
Thursday: Survivor, CSI, E.R.
Friday: Nada
Saturday: Trading Spaces if we aren't doing something

Used to watch The Simpsons Reruns but see Sunday, Seinfeld is on a couple of times a day and I'll catch that too (such as last nights Risk episode (the game of world domination))

I haven't watch tv in a long time. Basically, theres nothing on that intrests me.  :-\

Not much at all.   :-\  Not that I don't like it, but I just don't see much.  When the tube is on, it's usually on so the girl can watch it and then it's usually a DVD of some cartoon or other.

Shows I'd like to watch but seldom see are TRU calling, That 70s Show, Simpsons.  Not much new show wise.  I'll watch Buffy or Angel reruns given the opportunity.  Hockey.  Some NFL.  We have a decent sports highlights channel so I'll tune that in to watch highlights and read the stats across the ticker.

I spend more time in front of the computer screen than the tv screen.

There are three "must see" shows I will go out of my way to watch every week:  That 70s Show, CSI and Survivor.  Other than those, I watch football on Sundays, Simpsons and Malcolm.  During the week, whatever looks good we'll watch.  As sad as it is to say, the best comedies on TV are reruns:  Seinfeld, That 70s Show, Simpsons, etc.

When none of those are on, most of the time I end up watching either ESPN, Discovery or FoodTV or watching one of our many DVDs.

the only show i watch religiously is alias. i don't know why, but that show is just really good. i try to catch the simpsons, aqua teen hunger force, space ghost coast to coast, insomniac with dave atell, and any new york rangers and new york yankees games when they are on. outside of that, i'm hooked on tech tv - doesn't matter what show, but my favorites are screen savers and unscrewed with martin sargeant. i also have the anime network on demand - best $5 i've spent per month in a long time.

When I get a chance to watch TV I usually try to catch  Thats 70s show, or most anything on discovery, history channels, American Chopper, Junkyard Wars, I also like to catch the muscle car shows on speed.   Other that those, sports, NFL, NASCAR, BUSCH. those I catch almost every time they are on.

Monday- Thursday: Never fail, I watch:

-Family Feud (The new ones)
-Judge Judy
-The Simpsons
-Seinfeld (or Hollywood Squares- they're on at the same time over here)
-Conan O' Brien (the reruns on Comedy Central)
-Insomniac
-South Park (sometimes, if I'm not sleepy)

Friday: Same as the rest of the weekdays, except I tend to stay up later and watch a variety of different shows, but mainly Friday Night Stand-Up on Comedy Central

Saturday: It depends. I usually leave Comedy Central on while I'm using the computer, no matter what's on. I try to catch Cops and America's Most Wanted, as well.

Sunday: There's usually crap on t.v on Sunday mornings and afternoons, no two ways about it. Sunday night I try to catch the Simpsons.

Throughout the week I also watch the History Channel, and the Food Network if there's something good on, like Iron Chef or Unwrapped. :)

Thanks to my computer bing in a room without a TV and my current addiction to said game, I've really cut down on TV...

Sunday: Football (or baseball), Simpsons, and Alias
Monday: MNF and/or Las Vegas
Tuesday: none
Wednesday: West Wing, South Park
Thursday: ER (but not since they killed Dr. Romano)
Friday: none (sometimes JAG)
Saturday: none

Uh... not many shows in there at all.

I'm not sure how many of you catch "That 70s Show", but the one that was on last night was a pretty good one.  They are always good for a few Star Wars lines now and then, and last night was probably the most I have seen.  Billy Dee Williams (Lando) guest-starred as Eric and Donna's pastor, with him they have pre-marriage counseling.  He goes on several times with Eric about how Star Wars is the best movie of all time, and uses some quotes/scenes from the movie as many of his examples.  It was a pretty good one.

I was curious if anyone here caught the new Simpsons episode last night, the first half or so of it had a ton of Star Wars (CosmicWars) references, and really poked fun at how the new movies are quite bad and are lacking the story, etc. of the original films.  They showed the entire movie was basically set in the senate, taking roll call :).  It is pretty funny, especially for Star Wars fans.  If you missed it, I believe TheForce.net has the clips available for download.

For those of you who watch That 70s Show, they had a couple more references to Star Wars last night.  This show seems to be pretty good for a Star Wars reference here and there...last night Eric was constructing a "model" X-Wing, and later brings out a box of Star Wars models he had constructed while he and Donna were broken up.  They weren't actually models from what I could see, but actually Hasbro ships.  I think that is the second or third time this season they have shown Star Wars toys on this show, and maybe the 5th or 6th time they have referenced the movies.

I saw that article the other day too Scott.  Its funny how this show has just kind of faded away.  This was one of our "can't miss" shows for awhile, when it was in its prime on Wednesday nights...and then I thought it was cancelled.  Then it all of a sudden showed up during the summer, at odd times (Mondays sometimes if I remember correctly), and I again thought it was overwith...and now I see the final "season" is this summer.  I can't say I have seen a whole lot of the show for the past couple years now, but when we used to watch, it sure was funny.

Although this could probably go in either this thread, or the DVD one, or one of its own...I thought I'd start it here for now.  Are there any television series that you would like to see brought to DVD (that haven't been already)?  There seem to be more and more showing up all the time, but still many that are missing and could be brought back.  Are there any you currently own or are working toward owning?  Just curious which ones everyone would like to see.  Personally, we only have seasons of Simpsons and Futurama on DVD for now, although others have been tempting as well.  I know some people don't think it is necessary to have DVDs of shows that still consistently show reruns, but sometimes it is fun to have your favorites.  Anyways, here's some I'd like to see:

Seinfeld (one of our favorite shows, I think it is rumored to be starting later this year with Season 1)
Scrubs (another favorite of ours, and a show we could probably watch over and over)
Arrested Development (only one season done, still not confirmed for a second one, but we find this show hilarious.  If you've never seen it, I might suggest giving it a try....if its ever on again)
That 70s Show (not sure if I'd buy this one or not, but one of the other shows we watch on a consistent basis...might pick up a season here or there)
Clone Wars Animated Series  :P (Just had to throw this one out there, although it isn't as much of a several season set type of thing like other shows)

There are others that would be tempting as well, and some that are already out that we just haven't splurged on yet.  I kind of like the idea of having season sets on DVD of TV series, so you can watch them whenever you want....troubles sleeping, bored on a weekend afternoon, etc.  Anyways, any shows you'd like to see brought to DVD...or favorites you currently have?

Well, the new television seasons are slowly staggering out and starting now, so what shows are you looking forward to returning, or new shows starting?

NBC has rolled out most of their new seasons, with ABC and CBS following suit in the next week or so I think.  Fox has a few new shows, but many favorites won't be debuting until November (after baseball).

Here's some shows that my wife and I watch, and try to catch pretty regularly:

Scrubs (NBC) - Maybe its just me, but I think this is one of the funniest shows on television.  Probably our overall favorite show right now, and we don't miss it.  If you are willing, check it out, I think you'll enjoy it. (9:30/8:30 Central)

Arrested Development (FOX) - Not debuting until November 7, but we caught the entire first season (and will be picking it up on DVD next month), and this is a very funny show.  It is a little bit different type of humor, but we really like it.  Definitely a show to give a chance if you have the time, and it will be shown right after the next show.....

The Simpsons (FOX) - Everyone knows about this show.  Some say that the quality has fallen off as it has gone on, but I for one still enjoy it and am really glad it is continuing.  Another show that doesn't debut until November (14th? I think).

Family Guy (FOX/Cartoon Network) - A little ways off yet (2005), but we're looking forward to catching the new episodes of Family Guy.  We watch the reruns regularly on Adult Swim (as well as Futurama).  Now if they would only bring Futurama back as well.

Smallville (WB) - Actually only saw this show a couple of times during its first few years, but we've been catching the reruns over the summer, and it is a pretty good show.  Maybe its the fact that it is based on a comic book hero, but we've really enjoyed watching it this summer...I think we'll try to catch it this season if we can.

That 70s Show (FOX) - Another show we catch pretty regularly.  Maybe not "as funny" to me personally as Scrubs or Arrested Development, but still pretty consistent and quite enjoyable.  Plus, its always good for a couple Star Wars references per season.  This is one Fox show that has debuted already.

Other Shows.....

We catch shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond (last season), King of Queens, and Still Standing on CBS.  All are fairly funny I think, but not ones that we "must see" necessarily.  Hadn't really watched King of Queens much either until this summer, and have started to enjoy it more and more.  My wife originally started watching "The OC" last summer, and eventually got me hooked as well.  I know, that is sad, but we will probably be watching the second season as well.  Although I know some people absolutely hate it just to hate it, we have been catching "Joey" so far, because we were fans of the Friends series.  The first episode was ok, funny in spots, but nothing spectacular.  Will probably continue to watch it though.  Also caught the first couple shows of "Father of the Pride" on NBC, for the most part.  It is an animated "adult" comedy (how it was advertised), much along the lines of Shrek (from the same creators).  Not too bad, nothing spectacular here either though.  We are also good to watch the "home shows" from time to time on TLC....Clean Sweep and Trading Spaces being the most common ones we see.  Otherwise, the rest of our TV viewing time consists of sports, cable/VH1 special type stuff, old shows from Nick at Nite or TV Land, and the occasional cartoon (Justice League, The Batman, old Spidey/X-Men reruns, and occasionally Nickelodeon stuff).  Oh, and of course, Adult Swim.  Seems like a lot of TV I guess, but it is one of our main forms of entertainment.  After working out in the early morning, working all day, then walking the dog and house work, we're usually ready to plop in front of the tube at night.  Really just a few "mainstays" that we catch each week anymore though.  Kind of "sitcom" type people, and those are either getting not so good anymore, or falling by the wayside.

The only show that I watch religiously is Alias. I don't know why, but I have to make sure that I am home and doing nothing on Sunday nights at 9pm. Which is a good time for me to be home doing nothing, because I usually am. As for the rest of the nights of the week? I just flip around if I'm watching TV at all. With the invention of the internet, I don't spend half as much time in front of the tube anymore. And if there is a show that I want to see that I miss, chances are I can find it online somewhere, and it will be edited so that I don't have to watch the commercials. Too bad season 4 isn't supposed to start till January I think  :-\

Anyone catch the Star Wars VH1 special this weekend?  I believe it was called "When Star Wars Ruled the World".  Saw it, taped it, and it wasn't too bad.  Of course, I always enjoy me a Star Wars show, especially the nostalgic kind that look back on the good ole days :P.  They did have interviews with quite a few of the stars (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, Harrison Ford, Billy Dee Williams, Peter Mayhew, Frank Oz, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Warwick Davis, John Williams, etc.)  Kind of nice seeing all this Star Wars attention over the past week too.

I watched it. I was really digging it until they had some snarky comments about the fans. I know I should have a thicker hide, but **** like that gets under my skin sometimes.

All this SW love from the rest of the world will be gone after the holidays, I fear. Which kinda sucks. I'm sure the whole point of the DVD release is to build hype for ROTS.

Did anyone happen to watch the "Priceless Collections: Boys' Toys" special on the History Channel last night? (thanks Jesse, via the front page)  I happened to watch it, but the Sansweet segment wasn't until almost the very end of the show (if you are catching it on the replay, its in the last half hour).  Kind of a neat little segment, highlighting different areas of his collection.  It really made my collection seem quite piddly in comparison, but then again, I don't have that money to spend either.  It would be cool to visit his "Rancho Obi-Wan" sometime to see all of that though, pretty amazing.

Also, on the television note...for those interested, A Charlie Brown Christmas is airing tonight on ABC.  That has always been my favorite Christmas "special", and I try to watch it every year.  I think it might be replayed at a later date in December as well.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: JediMAC on December 7, 2004, 03:49 PM
Yeah, I caught that last night as well, Brian!  Unfortunately, I got home too late for the regular showing from 9-11pm, so I had to stay up for the replay from 1-3am.  Of course, as you pointed out already Bri, the Sansweet segment didn't come on until the second to last segment, nearly the very end - about 1 hour and 38 minutes into the show, to be exact.  So I couldn't hit the sack until about 2:45am when it finally ended...   :-\

Though there were definitely some cool shots in there, I was actually kinda disappointed overall with it.  Sansweet spent a little too much time being a goof, and describing certain characters and whatnot, as if folks watching the show had never seen the Star Wars flicks before.  I basically wanted to see a camera slowly scroll through his entire collection house - floor by floor, hall by hall.  Yeah, I know, that's a tad unrealistic, with his collection spanning over 5,000 square feet of living space.

Still fun to see it though.  Maybe not 2:45am fun, but still cool nonetheless.  He's obviously got a mind bogglingly insane collection, and a lot of very rare and unique pieces mixed in there.  Still find it surprising to hear that he actually hits the toy stores like everyone else here does.  I'm not entirely sure I believe that.  Seems like something he'd get some hired help for, or have his archivist do...

Anyway, here's a link (http://www.goldengategarrison.com/gallery/sansweet04) to 140 pictures of his collection as well.  Check it out, some cool stuff in there...

I don't know if anyone caught the new Family Guy last night, but it centered on Peter saving the local bartender from a fire, while he (Peter) was blind.  The whole episode Peter wanted to do something "he would be remembered for", and this act did it.  Anyways, at the end of the episode, he gets a medal from the Mayor and the scene mirrors the ending scene from ANH almost exactly.  Chewie accompanies him as he walks down the aisle, and R2/3PO are shown as well.  It also has the same fade and credits in the style of Star Wars.  Kind of neat, anyways.  I believe Yakface might have a link up of the scene, if anyone is interested in seeing it.

ABC revives 'Kolchak' (http://edition.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/05/17/tv.newseason.ap/index.html)

A remake of the shortlived 1970s occult series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" is also among the three new dramas and two comedies ABC said Tuesday it will introduce in the fall.

A remake Of Kolchak, I don't think anyone could replace Darren Mcgavin, well maybe David Duchovny.  ;D

And here I thought it was just me who was getting tired of the same old crap on TV.  :P

I read the article above and I have to agree with many of the points the study found.  I know that as I've gotten older, my TV watching has really dropped off.

Also, as they point out in the article, thanks to the internet, I spend less time watching TV now more than ever before.  I'd much rather drop in here to chat SW with all of you than suffer through an episode of "Dancing with the Stars". *shudder*   ;)

Yes, the whole, military idea of tearing someone down and then building them up again is intreaguing and facinating to watch.

I have to recomemd "The Inside" I have to say that three out of the four shows so far have really surprised me with their ideas and their boldness. I don't think anyone would be dissapointed.

With the new fall shows starting up over these few weeks here, is there anything you are looking forward to seeing...new or returning?  My wife and I are pretty regular TV watchers when we're home, so I'm anxious for some new installments to start up again.  What do you watch, or maybe thinking about checking out?

Sunday
The Simpsons - I still enjoy watching the episodes, sometimes hit and miss, but kind of nostalgic in a way too.  Just talking the other night about this, I've been watching this since I was about 11 or so.  Well over half my life.
Family Guy - So glad this came back.  Always good for a laugh, and one of the funnier shows on TV I think.
Desperate Housewives - My wife got into this last year, so we've been watching it and looking forward to the new season.  Not really too bad of a show, interesting at least.

Monday
Arrested Development - A great comedy, and despite all the publicity about "you should watch this", I still don't think enough do.  It is a little different type of a comedy, so it might take a certain sense of humor to get it maybe.

Tuesday
Scrubs - Our favorite show on tv, but from what I hear it might not be back until midseason-ish.  It might not even be on Tuesday, who knows, but this is where it used to be.  A very funny show, and always puts me in a good mood.  Can't wait for it to come back.  Finally getting some deserved attention with several Emmy nominations.
My Name is Earl - The "buzz" around this show has been good, and I always enjoy Jason Lee.  We're going to check it out, and hopefully it will be funny.  I always enjoy good sitcoms, and there has been far too few decent ones lately.
The Office - Maybe not as good as the British version (I haven't really seen it, but fans of the show seem to feel this way), but it grew on me last year.  Pretty funny.

Wednesday
LOST - Missed several episodes during the "regular" run, but caught up with everything over the summer for sure.  We're hooked now, and I can't wait for the premiere next Wednesday.
That 70s Show - Not back until later on (after baseball), but we usually watch this as well.  Curious to see how the show will be without Topher Grace (Eric) and possibly Ashton Kutcher (Kelso).  I think this is the last season from what I understand.

Thursday
Smallville - Another one of our most favorite shows.  Maybe it isn't 100% "true to the comics", but its still Superman to some extent, and is fun to watch.  We've really been looking forward to this one as well.

Friday
Nothing in particular...usually movie night or something.

Saturday
Justice League Unlimited - Sure, its a cartoon, but it is a really good show.  One of my favorites, and my wife actually enjoys the show too.  Otherwise, Saturdays tend to be a movie night as well, maybe catching SNL sometimes too, although it hasn't been too great lately.  Of course, college football as well (Go Big Red).

Those are pretty much our "regular viewing" shows, although we'll catch a few others from time to time.  My wife watched the premiere of the show Reunion last week after the OC, and liked it quite a bit.  I have a feeling we might be watching/taping that one this year.  I also watched the premiere of Supernatural on Tuesday, and it was fairly interesting.  I don't know if I'll keep watching it or not, due to other shows being on at the same time, but we might tape it.  Who knows, we'll see how good it ends up being.  I've heard good things about House, as well as the upcoming Everybody Hates Chris so those might be interesting.  Otherwise, on some nights anymore, it seems like the reruns of shows like Seinfeld, Raymond, Simpsons, and 70s Show are better than the "new" stuff.  I'm personally tired of "reality" shows, so those are little to none in our house.  Anyways, anything you're watching this year...or looking forward to?

Looking forward to:

Lost -- missed a couple of episodes and now I'm lost (what is the hatch and what's up w/the numbers?)

Desperate Housewives -- my guilty pleasure (well, one of them ;))

Rescue Me -- the more I watch the more I love it.  Though it just finished up and we have to wait a while for new shows -- it seemed like a really short season.

I don't know if anyone caught Conan O'Brien last night, but he had Harrison Ford as his guest.  During the interview Conan brought up the Star Wars Holiday Special and talked about it with Ford a bit...and even had a clip of Harrison/Han talking to Chewie's "family" in the special.  It was kind of funny, and surprisingly to hear it brought up.

Also, on a side note, Billy Dee Williams made a cameo on our favorite show, Scrubs, last night.  One of the stars of the show, Donald Faison, is a big Star Wars fan in real life...and kept calling him "Lando" on the show.  Kind of funny.

The Lando stuff on Scrubs was great! I've wanted to watch Scrubs for a long time, but this season has been the first I've actually sat down and watched it. Haven't missed an episode yet, and each one seems better than the last. This weeks episodes with Mandy Moore actually had me laughing out loud, which doesn't happen very often.  Anyone that likes Earl or Arrested Development is missing out if they aren't watching Scrubs.

Also...nice Arrested Development marathon on Friday.  I missed the first episode, but saw the last three and thought they were great.  I've got the rest on tape/DVD aside from the one I missed, and its one of our favorite shows.  Haven't heard anymore word on if its going to continue elsewhere (Showtime was rumored at one point, although we don't get it), but it really is/was a hilarious show.

Yah!  A fellow AD fan!

The future for AD looks grim according the rumors on the net and word that the show's creator (Mitch Hurwitz) is emotionally drained.

The final four shows were great though and seemed to wrap everything pretty well.

I hope it's not the end but I fear it is.

Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: Brian on February 15, 2006, 11:33 AM
Yeah, I thought the show was wrapped up pretty nicely in those last four episodes.  Don't get me wrong, I really hope it continues on, but I thought the ending was done in a way where it could really be "the end" or it could continue on as well.  My wife and I have been watching AD from the beginning, and it has been great.  It will be curious to see what the future is, if any.  Showtime has sounded like the best bet of anything, and although we don't get it (and probably wouldn't pay for it for just the one show), there would always be the DVD releases.  Maybe we'll start to get further confirmation on this now that this season is all wrapped up.

I've been enjoying this season pretty well, so I say keep 'em coming!

I just happened to notice that a channel on our local cable lineup (Ion) is showing the Wonder Years repeats.  I don't know if anyone else here enjoyed that show, but I watched that a lot when I was growing up, and always liked it.  Its been kind of nice watching the repeats here and there.  Anyways, if anyone is interested, they seem to be showing at 9 PM (Central Time) here on Ion.  That same channel also had the original Battlestar Galactica on this past weekend, and I think might be showing it on Sundays from now on too.  It has been a long time since I had seen any of those episodes, but remember them from my childhood as well.

I don't know if anyone has been watching 30 Rock on NBC, but its a pretty funny show.  It is good for a Star Wars reference every couple episodes as well (most often from Tina Fey's character).  Last night there were two "I will slice you open like a Taun Taun" and "I look like Admiral Ackbar".  I actually really enjoy the whole night of comedy on NBC.  Scrubs and the Office are two of our favorite shows, and 30 Rock and Earl are good as well.  I know comedies don't do that well in overall viewers/ratings anymore, and that kind of saddens me.  I like more dramatic shows like LOST and Heroes as well, but its nice to have a night to just laugh as well.  I guess I'm not into a lot of the reality/game show stuff that's being thrown at us anymore, its getting to be too much.

What upsets me about some shows on CBS in recent years is they don't really give them a chance to get started.  I guess that isn't really limited to CBS, but they come to mind the most.  What they seem to do is when they have some big "special" event to put on, they will bump particular shows and then constantly will change the day/time of the show.  This can get confusing and people who might be otherwise interested in watching won't be able to because they don't know when/if the show will be on.  I remember right after my wife and I got married she was big into Crossing Jordan and this was another CBS show that suffered the same fate.  It was a decent show with a decent following, but was always moved around the TV lineup and not really given a chance to shine.

Oh well, it appears that NBC will renew Life and Southland for another season.  Hopefully Southland won't die a gruesome death being moved to Friday nights.

I find it interesting that you call CBS out on that since that network, IMO, is one of the most stable as far as putting a show on and sticking with its schedule.  What you describe is FOX which is by far the most unfriendly network when it comes to nurturing shows.

The Unit actually got 4 seasons which surprised me.  I liked it a lot as well and will be sorry to see it go, but it's not like CBS put it on one season, moved it all over the schedule and then ended it.

Crossing Jordan wasn't a CBS show, it was NBC, and I only remember seeing that switch nights one time but it may have moved more.  Plus it ran for 6 seasons which is a lot, really.

And unless something has changed in the last week, Life got cancelled.

Well slap me on the ass and call me Sally...

I'm going off of stuff I read about a month ago.  And I guess I'm wrong on a ton of my post...guess I'll just call myself uninformed now.  I really thought Crossing Jordan was on CBS and I thought it had a decent run, but was constantly moved around.

As for Life, I thought I read that it was being considered for renewal, but I just looked it up and no.  So now, I've only got a couple of shows to watch that are even halfway entertaining at this point.  Good thing I don't watch a ton of TV anyway.

I likey.  I wish I remembered the original storyline from V a bit better.  This preview reminds me a lot of that short run show Invasion from a couple years back.

I will give this show a chance but nothing beats the original miniseries.  Hopefully its better then the first TV series.

Yeah, I just looked that up yesterday after I was informed.  Pisses me off that the two shows I watch religiously are pulled off the air.

As for the the CSI, I never have gotten into that.  I get tired of seeing the same old shows over and over again, police drama, ala CSI or law shows.  They are all the same to me and not very refreshing.

After my bumbling of a post earlier this week I took a look around the 'net to see what else was chopped for the upcoming season.  My Name is Earl is gone as well.  So basically, most everything that I watch on the the basic channels is now gone.

Of my normal network TV list that I "used" to watch/DVR on a regular basis:
My Name is Earl
The Unit
Life
The Office
Southland

So 3 of 5 shows are cancelled and Southland has been moved to Friday night where it will probably go to die as many shows do.  Thank god for all the stuff on the History/Military channels or I'd have nothing to watch at all.  I do casually watch some of the stuff my wife watches, but never get into any of it, except maybe Desperate Housewives.  She watches Grey's Anatomy, which I think is stupid and is pretty much the same drama week after week after week.  She used to watch Brothers and Sisters, but I got so pissed of with the politics of the show (can't we have a show with no politics) that I won't be in the room to watch/listen.  And then there is reality TV that I could go on it's merry way and i wouldn't miss it at all.  The Bachelor series is stupid and has run it's course.  ABC keeps trying to pump life into it by scripting drama, but it's still stupid.  All the dance/singing shows drive me crazy after a while.  I halfway like American Idol just because I love music, but it doesn't bother me if I missed it completely.

Okay, I guess this rant is over for a while.

The new "V" series starts up here Nov 3rd, I'm looking forward to checking it out.

Also starting on Nov 15th is the new remake of The Prisoner (http://www.amctv.com/originals/the-prisoner/) on AMC with Ian McKellen as #2. This 6 episode miniseries is based on the 1960s cult classic TV series The Prisoner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prisoner) staring Patrick McGoohan as #6. I'm really looking forward to seeing this long awaited updated series, I watched the original back in the day. RIP Patrick, be seeing you.  :'(

Funny that this has come up.  I didn't feel like watching football and cruised through the channels to find that the original series V is actually on SyFy right now.  My roommate and I in college spent a weekend watching the original series on video...that had to be about '95 or '96.

I look forward to the upcoming series.  There isn't much on TV right now that I am even into.

And on that note, what shows do you guys watch weekly?  For me, I watch the following religiously:

The Office
Flash Forward (I love this show)
Clone Wars (sometimes if I remember to set the DVR)
and my guilty pleasure Desperate Housewives

I watched some of the V marathon they ran today but it was too much.  I turned it off after a while.  Still, it was fun to see a little of it, I haven't seen it since it was probably first run...unless I caught a re-run of it somewhere that I'm forgetting.

As for what TV shows I'm watching?  Probably too many;
House
Heroes
Greek
Castle
NCIS and NCIS: LA
Sons of Anarchy
Flashforward
Office
CSI: Vegas
Mentalist
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Clone Wars
Dollhouse
Numb3rs
Stargate: Universe
Sanctuary
White Collar

And those are just what's on now.  When some of those go on hiatus and TNT, USA, SyFy and FX bring back their other series like The Closer, Psych, Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Rescue Me you can swap those in also...

I think V has quite of bit of potential. I thought they got threw all the setup alot faster than the '80s miniseries did. I like the use of the terrorist sleeper cell as the start of the resistance and the intro of our first fifth columnist. I wonder if we will get a hybrid star child like the miniseries did.

Anyway, my list is Fringe, Fast Forward, Sanctuary, Star Gate Universe and V.

I think they are only showing 4 episodes, then going on hiatus for the olympics.  It's due back in Feb, so I think the Feb ratins are what will make or break the show.  Too bad there's such a gap in episodes - that's a great way to lose viewers IMO.

Same idea as the original, a government agent resigns for unknown reasons. He is drugged & when he wakes up, he is in the Village & the world that he knows is all gone. The people have no names, they are numbers & he is #6 & Ian McKellen is #2. In each episode in the original show, different people play #2 as they failed to get information from #6. All they want to know is why he resigned & #6 will not tell tho he does want to know who #1 is but we never knew back in the day. Patrick McGoohan took that answer to the grave with him.

His only purpose is to escape the Village & for those that try fail & at times meet the security of the Village... the big white weather balloon.

The original had 17 episodes, this new one is only a 6 episode mini-series. I like Ian McKellen as #2, plays the part well.  ;D

There is an interesting article over at The A.V. Club (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-best-tv-series-of-the-00s%2C35256/) listing the top 30 shows of the '00s.  They have write-ups on all the shows but here's the list if you don't want to jump over:

1: The Wire
2: The Sopranos
3: Arrested Development
4: Freaks and Geeks
5: Mad Men
6: Breaking Bad
7: The Office (UK)
8: Lost
9: Deadwood
10: The Shield
11: The Office (US)
12: Battlestar Galactica
13: 30 Rock
14: Futurama
15: Veronica Mars
16: Friday Night Lights
17: Firefly
18: How I Met Your Mother
19: Big Love
20: Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!
21: Curb Your Enthusiasm
22: Six Feet Under
23: Undeclared
24: Dexter
25: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
26: The Venture Bros.
27: Flight of the Conchords
28: Eastbound & Down
29: Wonder Showzen
30: The West Wing

I can agree with quite a bit on that list even though I haven't seen several of the shows.  But it seems like they just listed every HBO series for the last decade...just because.

I think Rescue Me should have been on that list somewhere.  I think Freeks and Geeks is a stretch...since it aired in 1999, which isn't an "00" year, but they used the summer 2000 showing of the final 3 episodes to sneak it on the list.

I'm sure I could think of a couple other shows that might be contenders but I'm drawing a blank right now.  I think the fact that Veronica Mars made their list validates most of it.  That's one of the best series ever, not just of the last 10 years.

I read some of the comments and one show that was mentioned a lot was It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.  Hmmm...  Maybe.  I love that show but I don't know if it cracks that top 30.

And while Whedon does deserve the props for Buffy and Firefly (also Angel!), the fanboys calling for Dollhouse are a little off their rocker.  But please, feel free, anyone, tell me why I'm wrong in thinking that Dollhouse is completely overrated and nothing more than a mediocre morality play that didn't really deserve a second season.  Seriously, I want to know what I'm missing because that's kind of a terrible show.

"Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!" was absolute garbage.  It was about the only reason I ever turned off [adult swim] back when I worked second shift.

That list sucks... looks like some guy randomly compiled a random list of shows that the Internet says are cool... I mean come on, Tim and Eric? Credibility lost.

Also is it just me or are all the good TV shows on cable now? I don't watch much TV anymore (mainly just South Park, It's always Sunny in Philadelphia, ESPN, and Adult Swim reruns) but I've seen episodes of Sons of Anarchy, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dexter, and Eastbound and Down, (among other things) and all are pretty damn good. I know I'd much rather watch that than the 4 hours of boring Office and Office clones on NBC, and whatever the hell Fox still airs.

I do want to check out that new show Modern Family though, I hear it's good.

Regular broadcast still has some good shows.  Flashforward has been pretty decent.  For stuff that's been on more than one season, I love Chuck, Smallville still has some good storylines, NCIS, Lost.

Granted, some of the shows aren't necessarily going to win awards for drama, but that doesn't mean they don't have good stories or interesting characters.

I would agree though that cable has much more going for it right now.

How many of you guys are watching Flash Forward?  I love the show, but read a little bit ago ABC isn't going to renew it.  It appears they said they'd renew one of the two sci-fi shows they have going so with this getting cut, it looks like V will get picked up.

I hate to see Flash Forward go as I've thought it was a great show.  I have no problems with V as that series has gotten really good the past few episodes.

Also I really enjoyed Southland until NBC dropped it, and then obviously thrilled that TNT picked it up.  It appears TNT ordered 10 new episodes to start airing in January 2011.

One thing I think networks do that ultimately can kill a show is put them on an extended break and then hope for good ratings.  I think with V they managed to accelerate the story right before the break and it really took off when it came back.  FF had a developing story each episode and there was really no need to accelerate it.  Kills me to see it go as I really was into it.

I will miss FlashForward as well.  With Lost ending, I was hoping that I could come close (but not quite) to replacing it with the V/FlashForward combination.  Unfortunately, that's not going to happen, and neither show is even close to Lost by itself.

Flashfrorward was getting good shame but then it happens to all shows

V well that has been getting better as it went along too, being an old fan of the original show I didnt think it would cut it, but it has surprised me.
I'm guessing ep12 was the season ender though. couple of little surprises in there to be sure.

SO happy V is coming back...there are plenty of issues with that show but it has a lot of promise and is an easy way to kill an hour. Kind of the opposite of FlashForward, where every episode feels like an agonizing three hour prison sentence.

I mean, I like FF, but it's sort of a love/hate relationship. It's pretty inconsistent...the problem with having a show with multiple plotlines unfolding simultaneously is that some of them are inherently going to be more interesting  and so the pacing becomes very uneven over the course of a season. (see: Heroes)

I think FF would have been much better off focusing strictly on the uber-arc and eliminating all the worthless tangents with Cancer doctor, the whore wife, etc. That crap just dragged the show down terribly.

Overall though, the show was just not very enjoyable. I wanted to like it, but it always felt like more of an obligation than a treat to watch. The timeslot sucks too...that should have aired at 9pm or 10pm at least.

On the plus side, at least Baltar got another paying acting gig for awhile.

6: Breaking Bad
12: Battlestar Galactica
14: Futurama
17: Firefly
24: Dexter

from E's list the above are shows I have watched and loved.  There were plenty of other shows on that list that I intend to watch - but I will recommend the above shows to any adult.  Hands down The Wire and Sopranos are two of my favorite shows ever - The Wire possibly being best show ever.  I also just finished Breaking Bad season 2 and I am really enjoying that.  BSG I liked seasons 1 and 2 a lot  - the rest was kinda down hill.  Firefly turned out to be excellent as it got closer to its end - sadly.  Dexter is also pretty darn fun to watch too.

Still watching it and loving it. I absolutely agree they have upped the ante this year, I think because they know they are a bubble show and cannot afford the slow pacing of the first season to capture their audience, especially after that long hiatus.

Last night was great...SO awesome to see them kill that Cylon bitch. God I hated her on both shows! Any screen time for Jane Badler is a win in my book too.

I still think the writing and plotlines need a bit of work, but overall it has been a strong debut so far this year. The only thing I can't stand about the show is her loser d-bag son. What an idiot. I cannot wait for the eventual "reveal" scene where he realizes what a tool he has been all along. (Literally and figuratively)

I'm not sure if it is a mini-series or not.  At the end they showed a clip of scenes from "This season" - which would indicate there is more than one season.  I would just assume that since the show revolves around the one murder that solving it would end the game.  Unless it opens up a can of worms, i.e. - similar murders in other towns......  It is good.  Sunday night was two episodes.  This Sunday it picks up with 1 hour episodes.

Anyone watch Falling Skies last night on TNT? I was really looking forward to this as there is literally nothing else for me to watch on TV over the summer outside of Adult Swim.

Seemed like kind of a letdown somehow. It's just so obviously trying to be "Walking Dead" with aliens, but that didn't really translate so well. You don't really need much backstory with zombies. Aliens though? You need more backstory than a few random kid's pictures in the first 5 minutes. I'm sure there will be more forthcoming, but I didn't feel like there was really enough there up front to get you invested in the story.

It also borrowed a little heavily from "Skyline", "Battleground :LA" (or whatever it was called) and BSG> I mean, could the mechs looked any MORE like Cylons? I hated that CGI too... the actual "skitters" were rendered a lot better IMO.

I did like the whole "harness" thing although even that is borrowed heavily from other source material. Curious to see where they go with that. I also kind of liked the dude who played the leader of the post apocalyptic band of outlaws, because he is a dead ringer for the lead singer of Malevolent Creation.  >:D

Thoughts? Too derivative? Refreshing?
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: efranks on June 20, 2011, 10:22 AM
Almost all television is derivative...and so are most movies.  It's not like The Walking Dead is all original, for example.

I watched Falling Skies and thought it was a decent show.  Not bad on production values for a show that has that large of a scale and is on cable.  I don't have a problem waiting for more information about how the invasion all went down, I'm sure we'll get more info as the story goes on.

I have a bigger problem accepting Noah Wyle in an action role like that, not really something I ever recall him doing before.  And Moon Bloodgood?  I'm over her.  On the other hand, Jessy Schram AND Sarah Carter in the same show, on screen at the same time?  Yay.

I really came to like this show, it can be a little annoying at times and the writing/plotting is not always very tight, but it ultimately made for an enjoyable hour of TV, IMO.

The introduction of the uber-aliens was a nice touch, opens a lot of doors for them to pursue. Would not mind at all having a toy Skitter either. Get to work TNT!

Will you be watching the two-hour premiere of the new J.J. Abrams' prison island-themed show tonight at 8 EST (9 CST)?
It stars Sarah Jones ("Sons of Anarchy"), Jorge Garcia of "LOST" fame as well as Sam Neill ("Jurassic Park") and centers around 302 prisoners and guards who went missing in 1963 suddenly showing up in our time.
PhGeek.com will be liveblogging the premiere beginning at 7:45 p.m. at http://phgeek.blogspot.com/2012/01/alcatraz-liveblog-watch-with-us.html. Please feel free to drop by and join us.
If you want a primer before or are searching for answers afterward, you can check out the Alcatraz Podcast by PhGeek.com at http://alcatraz.podbean.com/. This week at www.PhGeek.com we even went so far as to try to predict the endgame of the show before the first episode even airs. Still time to get yours in.
Anyway, looking forward to tonight's premiere. I hope you check it out and take part in the conversation that Abrams' shows generally lead to. Enjoy!

Post by: McMetal on January 16, 2012, 10:37 PM
Wow, that was not terrible, but it was pretty weak. The show really suffers from sub-par writing and a lack of the LOST gravitas. I'm actually surprised it was not better than that. The whole thing just seemed very superficial, for lack of a better word.

I'm hoping the show finds its legs soon, I'm not really feeling it at this point.

Poor Parminder Nagra, perpetually typecast as the Indian doctor. Jorge holds his own but is unconvincing as an academic. Sam Neill is money as always.

Which brings us to the lead chick. (I guess Emilie de Ravin was busy?) Her character needs a little more depth, IMO, but there is no denying she has oodles of sex appeal. Kind of liking her.

FWIW, I hope there turns out to be more to the show than at first glance. I did catch that the Warden's name (Kelvin - another LOST nod) was the same name on the fish market during the last shooting...so maybe there are some clues that will help keep things interesting.

You'd think a task force that can afford to maintain a super-secret ultra high security prison in the middle of the woods could afford a strike team too, but yet it's the lead detective and her boss that run up to corner the guy on the roof? That's what I'm talking about with the writing.

I'm an episode away from giving up on Alcatraz.  I thought it was a cool premise, but the actors are just not hooking me in.  Comic Book Guy as the emotionally-crippled, mousey wimp is just aggravating.  I get that he's supposed to be understated, but it's coming across wooden.  And dull.  Almost repellant.  The blonde cop is suitably hot, but the sunshine and rainbows is grating.  And even Sam Neill seems like he's sleepwalking.  The freaks-of-the-week haven't been particularly interesting.  Setting up the behind-the-curtain guy as a super-villain (who just happens to be the blonde cop's grandfather) is lame.  And the brooding fallen war hero who's destined to join the team and become blonde cop's love interest is too typical.  They've spent enough episodes doing set-up... unless they hit me with something compelling next week, I'll probably be gone.

Kind of agree on Alcatraz, although I'm willing to give it the rest of this season to improve. Hurley's act is wearing thin, no doubt.

And someone remind me why they're NOT looking for the grandfather? They only care about SOME of the convicted inmates walking around? Not the ones who kill cops?  ::)

I hate getting distracted by poor writing, but it is becoming commonplace with this show.

So, Anyone tune in for The River tonight on ABC?

I was all hyped for this awhile back, then completely forgot about it, and just happened to see it was on tonight for the first time. I guess the premier was two episodes back to back and then there are six more left after this.

Sort of a confusing mess, but maybe that is just me. I thought the Smoke Monster ripoff was supposed to be part of the whole series, but they seem to have wrapped that up already. So I guess it's going to be a "weird-jungle-voodoo" freak of the week type deal, moreso than a densely layered allegory ala LOST. Episode 2 felt like Blair Witch Pt 3.

It's an odd collection of characters. Bruce Greenwood is ok, and I like the son and his blonde love interest well enough. But I'm pretty sure the wife is the same actress who played Terri Bauer in Season 1 of 24 and man, I do not care for her. At least she got a better haircut this time around.

I kind of liked the "Quasi Liam Neeson, but not-quite Liam Neeson" guy Kurt, but I guess he is a bad guy so boo. And I can't figure out what the hell is going on with the precocious Latino girl - is she like 13 or 18? Should I feel creepy for thinking she is hot or what? Ugh...

I watched the premier of The River over the weekend.  Not great, but there's enough mystery there that I'll tune in for a few more episodes.  I think they've been a little too obvious in throwing out the "everyone has a secret past or agenda," but given the number of episodes, it looks like they will be addressing things pretty quick.  Haven't seen this week's episode yet, so the jury is still out on that one.

I think I've decided that I just don't enjoy The River. The characters are mostly unlikeable, except for the Doctor and the mechanic and his Lolita-esque daughter. I hate that they felt the need to create yet another TV love triangle, seriously, is anyone NOT sick of this plot device by now?

I think it's funny that ABC keeps trying to market this as some kind of scare-fest. There's been nothing even remotely frightening in that show to this point. It's all so contrived.

Yay! I just got an hour of my life back next year...FOX has officially cancelled "Terra Nova".

Let's just hope no one else is unfortunate enough to pick this up...let it die mercifully. I haven't missed this show one iota since it went off the air.

Kinda begs the question though, can FOX really cancel Terra Nova, Fringe, and Alcatraz all in the same year? Their network will be weirdness-free, kinda sad.

That's too bad.  I was not overly impressed, but it was nice to have a campy, fun Sci-Fi show to watch now and again.  I can't say that I ahve missed it either, but I would have been watching it if it was on.  It's a bummer that more of these types of shows don't succeed on mainstream networks (TN, Alcatraz, Heroes, etc.).  I think Fringe has had some limited success and obviously Lost was huge, but most of the Sci-Fi genre just doesn't last long.   :-\

I've been DVRing a few network shows that I won't commit too until the networks pick them up.  Alcatraz and the Firm are on this list.  So was Person of Interest but apparently that show is doing quite well and I'm 16 episodes behind  :o

Unrelated, I finally jumped on the Big Bang Theory bandwagon.  I've watched the first 3 seasons on DVD and the 4th is on queue.  Really enjoying that show.

After I fell asleep while watching most episodes of this show, I decided to stop watching a while back.  This is not surprising.

I somewhat enjoyed Terra Nova, but the acting was total crap.  The storyline was kind of all over the place, but it had a lot of potential. Sometimes I enjoy watching a show that doesn't require me to think an this was perfect.

What killed me was a few years ago when ABC pulled Flash Forward and NBC pulled Life.  I loved those shows.

I just think Fringe needs to get off the alter-universe stuff and get back to weird monsters in our universe. That plot line has gone on way too long.

There hasn't been an official decision yet, but it's not looking all that great at this point. The sad thing is, Fox won't tell them one way or the other before the final episode is shot, so they have no idea how to write things out for the rest of the season. Which means we will probably get one of those lame, unsatisfying "pseudo-endings" that doesn't really resolve anything.

I've always liked the show, but I think this season they finally stapped over the "X-Files" line, the point at which the show begings to collapse under the weight of its own mythology and becomes self-contradictory and ultimately a logical mess.

I mean seriously, BOTH Ninas are evil now?  ::)

I have been with BBT since the first airing.  It is really funny.  Truly made for nerds.

My new show I have been catching up on is How I Met Your Mother.  I remember watching it when it first came on and being underwhelmed.  I really think it is funny, and it will be interesting to see if they can wrap up flash-back storytelling better than Lindelof and Cuse did. :)  I am just starting the sixth(?) season on Netflix ( the last season they have).

Ugh, HIMYM is one of the only shows I have ever STOPPED watching. Normally when I commit to a show I am in for the long haul, but that one aggravated me so much I simply had to give it up.

They should change the name to "Everything That Ever Happened to Me EXCEPT How I Met Your Mother".

My real problem was that the writers set the table wrong for that show and kept trying to paint themselves out of a corner. IE: Ted and Robin. The whole first part of their run was them doing this whole Ross/Rachel type dance, to the point where they got me to root hard for them, only to pull the rug out from under me by screwing them up. And then when Gay Barney got into the picture,  I was done.

I HATE shows where all the characters end up dating each other at one point or another. That's just lazy.

The Slapsgiving episode was awesome though.

I thought this was hilarious. Gay couple's adopted daughter on "Modern Family" lost her stuffed bunny on the subway. They are trying to determine how much effort to put in finding it.

The one guy tells his partner when he was a kid he left his Luke Skywalker doll on the plane and his dad wouldn't get it back for him. Partner asks, "shorty robe Luke or dress blacks Luke?". It was shorty robe Luke.

At the end he finds him one on the internet. As the nerd I am, I was trying to tell which Luke 12" fig it was, but I wasn't sure.

FYI, Fringe was officially renewed for a final, 13 episode season that should provide complete closure and no crappy, pseudo-religious explanations like LOST and BSG.  ::)

Great news, Fox did pretty right by this show when all is said and done. Glad they will get the proper send-off they deserve.

Happy endings for all, and no deaths, please! (Except Robert Jones and William Bell 2.0)  ;D

Happy I realized just in time that last night was the return of Falling Skies. Been waiting for this forever it seems like.

Solid two hour premiere. This is a good summer show IMO...and I'm literally not watching anything else new right now outside of Adult Swim, so I was ready for something new.

On another note, how freaking awesome is the Eric Andre Show?!?!

^^I've been stoked about the Falling Skies return.  I don't generally watch a lot of TV, but that is a show I do dedicate myself to putting on the DVR and then watching before bed.  I really enjoyed the season premiere, but I felt like their were commercials every 5-7 minutes.  It drove me crazy.

On another note, I didn't catch the show Jericho when it was on network TV.  I kind of stumbled across it on Netflix and in the span of a couple of weeks watched the entire series.  I'm really surprised CBS killed off that show.  I can see where it only appealed to a certain audience, but I was really impressed with the show.  The story line was fantastic and although some of the acting was subpar, the scripts were good and they seemed to accelerate the story and didn't drag along too much with stuff that wasn't important to the plot.  I can't say enough how much I loved watching that series.  I'm not a comic book reader, but I'll order the comics just so I can keep going on what happened after season 2 ended.

Did anyone catch "Collection Intervention" last night on SyFy?  I DVRd it and got a chance to watch it this morning, sort of interesting.  The first episode focuses on a Star Wars collector (as well as a Catwoman collector), and it deals with "managing" a collection and keeping it from an obsession.  Basically, they get them to sell some things off and come to terms with letting a collection take over their life.  Anyways, a good watch, but maybe not for your wife/husband/significant other ;).  It looks like it is being replayed several times over the next week or so.  The Star Wars portion ends up at Rancho Obi-Wan, which was kind of neat (and they do have a pretty impressive SW collection).

Caught Toy Hunter last night, and really enjoyed it.  I did see the pilot episode they aired back in the spring sometime, so I'm glad they brought it back for more.  It is obviously more geared towards older/vintage toys, but the majority of the stuff is right in our wheelhouse with the 70s/80s focus.  Plus, Jordan found a couple of rare TF pieces in the 2nd episode last night that he sold to a friend/TF collector at the end - and that guy had just a ridiculous TF collection.  Its always fun seeing things like that.

I'm not saying I don't love the modern toys (because Lord knows I buy plenty of them), but seeing a lot of this vintage stuff reminds me of how fun toys were back then.  Toys really were "toys", and not collectibles (at that time anyways) and there really are a lot of fun play feature stuff incorporated to make things fun for kids.  Not saying I don't appreciate how far things have come with sculpting, articulation, paint, etc....but those older toys do have that sort of "magic" to them.  Particularly when they show items from the lines I grew up with....Star Wars, Joes, TF, MOTU, Secret Wars, and Super Powers.

I didn't even realize that she was an employee of Rancho, that is a little suspect then.  Too bad, it was fun seeing her collection and everything.

I think someone asked earlier, but Toy Hunter is on the Travel Channel.  Pretty good show, and definitely fun seeing those old toys.  I can't believe how much stuff some of these people have that he buys from.  I thought I had a lot (too many) toys, then I see people like this and realize it isn't as bad as I thought. :)

I caught what might have been the first episode of Toy Hunter last night unless I was late to the game.  Not sure I'd want that dude cherry picking through my collection, but it's a pretty neat show and has been added to the lineup.  Nice to see some older/rare toys as well.

Decent size collections...ya makes me wonder if I really am a hoarder so I'm not sure I want to see that collector intervention show or not.  One guy had a baby on the way and his wife wanted his collection out to make room for a nursery and he had just boxes and boxes and boxes of crap everywhere and had a hard enough time just parting with 1 single toy.

I sort of got that vibe as well, but I wasn't sure if it was because I was looking at it as a collector or not.  I enjoy it from the standpoint of seeing everyone's stuff, and I do see where collecting can cross over into obsessing, so I can see why some people may have troubles with that from time to time.  The fact that it could possibly be a bit staged (as evidenced by the posts above) kind of stinks though.

I did watch this with the Mrs. though, and I can't say it helped my case any ;).  She's always been pretty supportive of my collecting, particularly early on, but as things have continued to accumulate for 10+ years, I think the patience has lessened a bit, and I totally understand that.  When it started out, it was 30 or so figures, a few ships, and that was it.  Over time it has blossomed to a room full (and branched out to things other than SW), several storage totes full, etc.  I am understanding of it though, and that's why I'm trying to cut back and condense things more as I can (still working on that).  That show, while interesting, doesn't help things any though.  Everything the host says is "that's totally you" even though I have nowhere near the things these people do.  Collector mentality I guess.

We also watch Toy Hunter, which is a lot of fun.  The only problem with watching that show with the Mrs. is "look how much money they can get for these toys", where as much of what I have is opened, modern, and (mostly) worthless.

Hooray!

They just came to this conclusion 2 years too late.

I've watched the show religiously since it debuted, but it has become a real effort since Steve left. It actually wasn't even that great with him the last couple of seasons.

I just hope someone comes to their senses/sobers up and put the kibosh on that rumored Dwight spin-off.

I read about this yesterday as well.  I've watched the show since the beginning, but it has lost a little something since Steve Carell left.  We still watch it, and it is still funny, but I sort of thought they should have ended it when Michael left as well.  Oh well, I am glad they announced it, it is always nice to know when the last season is coming up.  It really sounds like they are moving forward with the Dwight spin-off "The Farm", as there has been some casting taking place for that as well from what I've seen.

I like "Toy Hunters", but

I think the "Collection Intervention" show was bad. The host's view on collecting, I think, is horrible.

I finally watched the first episode of "CI" last night and have to agree. It's a very poorly scripted, poorly conceived effort that had no depth or soul whatsoever. It's like, "hey, let's put these freaks on TV so we can all laugh at them and roll our collective eyes".

I was really hoping for something much more akin to Hoarders, which actually attempts to help people make real life-adjustments rather than brow-beating them into selling stuff off for quick cash.

The host of this show should be a psychologist, not an auctioneer. The woman that hosts now should just be brought in at the end to help handle the sales aspect and nothing else. There's no attempt to address how the people got to this point or how they can approach things in the future. It's all just about getting rid of the stuff.

And the subjects themselves? Ugh, where to start? They struck me as oddball, half-assed accumulators of swag, moreso than informed, astute collectors. The SW chick didn't even know what she had, and her collection was so random it couldn't possibly be complete in any one area. None of the vintage figs they showed of hers had any of their original weapons, and the modern Legacy/Clone Wars/etc stuff was just thrown together with no rhyme or reason. That's absurd.

The other couple just seemed staged to me. Just struck me as contrived somehow. Like, he has all this stuff he has been compiling for years, and just like that he dumps it all? With barely a wince? That seemed way too easy. They didn't even bother to explain why they were in debt. Was he in debt before? Do they both work? I'm supposed to believe she really never got curious and peeked in his Forbidden Garage of Mystery? Suuure.

Debating whether I want to watch any more of these...not what I was hoping for.

I don't know if anyone caught Toy Hunter this week, but Jordan found a guy who had a double telescoping Luke Skywalker (and didn't know what he had), it was kind of cool.  Also had a guy with an amazing Spider-Man collection, which I really liked to see.

I caught Collection Intervention this week as well (via DVR), and they had a guy on there with 31,000 comic books.  He ended up trading in 7 or 8 longboxes of comics (with complete runs - about 2000 comics in total) for an Incredible Hulk #181 (first appearance of Wolverine).  Although I'm still not sure how staged this show might be, it is interesting to see everyone's collections.

I have noticed, watching both of these shows, it does make you look at your own collections/toys.  It seems like very little modern stuff is either (1) worth anything or (2) has any interest for people.  Granted, it is the focus of the show(s) - more on the vintage/worth stuff - but it is something to think about.  I, like most of us here I'm guessing, don't collect for value or seeking what we'd sell it for down the road...but I look at the stuff I've collected, and I don't know that I necessarily have any "holy grail" pieces like many of these people do.  I do enjoy what I have, don't get me wrong, but I can see some benefit to these people who sell off the more common or stuff that doesn't hold that nostalgia for them and put it towards really getting those pieces they prize.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: iFett on August 31, 2012, 08:39 AM
Jordan is very knowledgeable about toys.  Reminds me of American Pickers though.  Oh I bought this for x and I'm going to make y on it.  Good for him?  I don't like his "so this is where you've been hiding everything" line for some reason, but it is nice to see other large collections and at least he doesn't put people down.

Breakdown Robot lady.  I don't like her.  Good for her that she used to work for Christies as an auctioneer.  Shame on her for making people feel bad about their collecting habits and telling people their stuff is or isn't valuable.

There's no way I'd let either of them in my house, but I suppose it's about time this stuff hit tv - staged or unstaged.  However it may be.

I've posted pictures of my collection (well mostly just the boxes) after I unloaded my storage unit last year on tfw in their intervention thread and so far I'm unrivaled.  Not sure if that's something to be happy or ashamed about though to be honest.   :-\
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: Brian on August 31, 2012, 11:12 AM
Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about the Intervention lady either.  Sure, she worked as an auctioneer for years, but I'm not sure how much of an "expert" she is on these people's collections and what they should keep/get rid of.  Plus, on most of these, it seems like the people have outlandish collections (lots and lots of stuff), and although in the end they sell a decent dollar amount (or sometimes a great dollar amount), they usually only get rid of a small portion of it.

Again, staged or unstaged, some of the people do seem to have maybe an unnatural attachment to "toys", and I can see getting to the root of that problem.  Also, I'm not sure what constitutes an "obsession" to the host/show, when they hassle these people about having too much stuff and it overtaking their life - crossing the line from collecting to obsessing, but then they hold an auction at Rancho Obi-Wan, which is a collection so large it has its own museum/warehouse dedicated to it ;).  Nothing against Steve Sansweet, his collection is amazing and he seems like a heck of a nice guy, but how is that not obsessing too?

Anyways, either way, I have fun watching the shows if for nothing else than to see a lot of cool stuff.  We do however, watch them as a family, and I think my wife gets too many ideas from it ;).

I've caught each episode of this new Collection Intervention show as well, and while I've found it very entertaining, I wholeheartedly agree that their view on collecting is highly skewed and pretty offensive.  The cute auction lady pretty much functions solely based on value and age (vintage).  Most modern toys are deemed worthless and should be sold off, and anything vintage that holds little value needs to go too.  Obviously this is not the reason most of us collect, and I'm not even sure I've noticed anyone on any forums yapping about collecting things solely as investments.  Each collector on the show seems to reiterate this, as they've all told the lady they have no idea what their stuff is worth, nor do they particularly care (which seems to confound her).

Regardless, I do greatly enjoying seeing all the different collections.  The Star Wars house in episode 1 was a thing to behold, but withholding the fact that she works for Rancho Obi-Wan was obviously more than a bit deceptive.

Last year I did a big write-up on all of the new shows that were coming, what looked good, what probably was going to tank, etc.  This year, I haven't even been interested enough to look to see what new shows are coming let alone if any of them look good.

I have seen commercials for this new show, Revolution, that looks like it might be interesting.  I just have a feeling that it's going to be this season's "Terra Nova" or "Jericho," it'll be good and then, even if it makes it a full season, won't come back and leave us all with a cliffhanger or something.

I thought Revolution looked interesting, except that the trailer focuses so much on the family dynamic angle.  Last thing I want to watch is a bunch of relatives arguing about what to do next.

I was thinking I might catch a few episodes of Revolution and see if it's any good.

One thing that has boggled my mind though in the commercials, is why are they using medieval weapons?  If power all of a sudden went out, non-electric powered equipment will still work.  I would think everyone and their dog that owns a firearm would be sure to get it out and have it on hand.

Maybe that will be explained early on.

If I remember correctly, there is a time gap.  The "now" of the show is taking place like 15-20 years after the "technology fail event" with flashbacks being used to fill in past and tease what happened to kill all technology.  So, if the show takes place 15-20 years after all technology failed, maybe the simple answer is that they used up all the bullets already?
Title: Re: Official Television Thread

Yeah, I think I read there's a time gap, too.  But there was a teaser poster of a guy weilding a semi-automatic and I was thinking, "That thing's good until you've used up all the bullets you can find."  Of course, suspension of disbelief will be used when they raid that military base and are using 50mm in that 45.  ;)

Anyone ever read The Road by Cormac McCarthy or seen the movie?  Something similar happens that society crumbles...nobody really knows why but there is ash constantly falling etc.  People have guns and things but there is no power...so people are forced into some really gruesome things to stay alive.  I doubt they'll go that far here but it is an interesting concept.

If anyone watched the show Jericho, they did something that I liked better than what some other movies/TV shows have done; after the nuclear blast, which fried unshielded electronics like computers, modern cars, power plants etc, they still were able to get older cars w/o electronic control systems up and running.  I think they even eventually were able to get some local power back for things.

We live in a modern society with a lot of tech, but we also have a lot of knowledge.  If something happened and the main power grid failed, you can't tell me that there wouldn't be engineers hooking up small wind, water or sun powered houses and buildings.  Even steam powered.  I can't picture a modern society not coming together and rebuilding.  Unless something really catastrophic happened.

I guess I'll have to see how they write this new show, Revolution, to see if I buy into it or not.

My dad cast his own bullets.  Even without advanced manufacturing capabilities you can still make ammo.  And 20 years after the power goes off I'd expect there'd be ammo sweatshops set up all over the place.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread

I do think there would be some smart people working to rebuild things, but the real question is what happens to society.  We've seen examples of how quickly people turn on each other when resources become scarce.  Just look at the looting and violence from Katrina.  Now expand that to a global scale where people can't even communicate beyond earshot.

Under those conditions, I think guns rule and there's the very real possibility that Engineers can't get the food or supplies they need.  Or, they build something for energy/communications and some shmuck with a gun kills them to get at it.  I'm definitely planning to watch this - just hope they make it good.

Casting bullets and reloading is easy without power, the problem comes in making/obtaining the gunpowder, shells and, especially, the primers.

You'd have a similar problem with modern cap and ball muzzleloaders also, you can make bullets and even the powder but you'd still need the cap to set it off.  Without that you're back to flintlock.

Bow and arror or crossbow make more sense because they're easier to make new ammo for and you don't have to manufacture primers.  Still, the raw material for both shells and primers would be around or could be manufactured again even without power, it would just take longer.

On another note, The Office is just f'ing terrible this year. Were it not for the Bob Odenkirk and Eric Wareheim cameos the past couple of weeks, this season would be almost unwatchable.

Never heard of it.

I've decided that The Vampire Diaries is the worst show I've ever watched on a regular basis.  Replacing Smallville, which I'd often fall asleep in the middle of.  It used to be sort of engaging. Then it became repetative crap. Unkillable immortal jerk , who in theory should be master of the world, but act like a twit and hangs around a small town just to annoy everyone at this point. There's the love triangle that seems devoid of any real passion any more.  Wait, am I describing Vampire Diaries or Smallville?

Arrow is still good, when it's not focused on Ollie's best friend and his girl/Ollie's ex.

I was debating it, but felt like I would only commit if it was 100% faithful to the original movie. I could have sworn I saw a scene showing the kid with a walkman on though, which would place this out of the 50's when he actually would have been growing up based on the Hitchcock timeline.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this strikes me now as more of a re-imagining type of thing, which might be well done but not what I was hoping for.

Yes they are shooting it like it takes place now which is a little weird. But the feel of the Hitchcock movie was still there for me so I am going to look past it. Just it one episode you could really feel how things started for the two of them developing the "relationship" they had in the movie.

Yeah, I watched it.  I wasn't impressed.  It wasn't completely terrible, and I plan on watching more to see where it goes, but it felt like old territory being covered with some of it.  The main guy, Nolan, is just a rolled up version of Mal Reynolds, Han Solo, and half a dozen other archetypes we've seen before...quite often done better.

We've seen the story before from shows such as DS9 and Babylon 5 and a few others.  I thought the CGI was bad in some places and downright terrible in others making me wonder if they really tried to pass that off on us or if they were letting it look like the video game it's tied into.

I'm just hoping it doesn't get any worse, that we maybe see some improvement.

I watched the premiere and thought it was okay.  I'll give it a few more chances since there isn't much else on right now. I was okay with the premise and the main characters are pretty good outside of the over-acting doctor.  I hope they cover more backstory on the invasion though.  I don't get why shows like this want to focus on 15 years after the really exciting cool stuff happened.  I don't want to see society rebuild - I want to see society obliterated, what people did to try to survive, what battles were able to turn the tide.

I give it a solid C thus far.

I watched the premiere as well and wasn't overly impressed. I agree with a lot of what's been said.

Nolan is a cookie cutter character, your basic rogue-turned-leader trope. The effects were god awful at times but decent at other points. I wholeheartedly agree that the too many shows employ the "aftermath" story telling device.

And what is the deal with the topography of St. Louis?

The acting is pretty good though, I like how Nolan is played, and Julie Benz as the mayor is entertaining. I'll give the show a few more viewings but I don't suspect I'm going to be in for the long haul.

Earth has been at least partially terraformed. (Which is strange term in this case, terra means "earth".)

There's a lot of unanswered stuff.

The guy that played Nolan was in some terrible made for SyFy zombie movie set in Reno.

I can't believe I am saying this, but that show really needs to end. The first season on Comedy Central felt a novelty, but it has been utter crap since then. And this is coming from a guy who never missed a single episode when it ran on Fox. I really loved that show back in the day but feel completely unmotivated to look for it now. I can't believe there are really that many people still clamoring for it.

On another note, ABC announced Zero Hour and 666 Park Avenue will be airing their remaining episodes on Saturdays starting in June. (I watched both shows and even I have no interest in seeing these anymore)

I'll admit Futurama wasn't what it was on FOX. They've still made a few good episodes since, and a few "too currently politically relevant to hold up over time" ones.

On the other hand, as the show goes,  it seems they make Fry stupider, Zoidberg grosser and more pathetic just for gags, it might be time to end it.

I'd keep watching it, anyway. I still watch the Simpsons, which really should've ended 10 years ago, but occassionally shows glimmers of the good old days (the Movie was lame).

Is anybody still watching Defiance?  Obviously a few weeks ago some folks were.

I'm still into the show and actually enjoy watching it for what it is.  When it first came out, I was hoping for something on the epic scale of Battlestar Galactica, especially when I saw the names of some of the production crew and their credits.  I didn't realize for a while this was a show spun from a video game.

So character development is what it is.  Nothing too deep and very predictable characters, but not all bad IMO.  I've been thinking of this show in the same light as Firefly.  I loved that series and didn't actually watch it until I caught all of it on Netflix last summer.  Defiance isn't really hokey or anything, just a fun show with an easy story to follow, much in line with the idea of "adventure of the week."  I appreciate having just mindless TV from time to time as I don't always want to think about a show.  So much like Firefly, it's somewhat predictable, decent characters that aren't really developed, but you know their feelings and to some degree you care about them.

All in all, I'm liking the series.  I DVR it and watch it later in the week when I've got a chance to sit still for a bit.  I'm not sure how many episodes there are in this season, but I'm kind of hoping for more next season.

Edit to add:  It looks like it was renewed for a second, 13 episode season in 2014.  It looks like the ratings have been pretty good for SyFy.

I'm still watching Defiance. I find the social acceptance of plural marriage, in what used to the USA, harder to believe than the aliens or terraforming.  Not debating/condemning anything, just saying seems like a big culture leap to make.

You bring up some good points there Scockery.  It seems like there's some merging of cultures between the alien races and the humans, so maybe it stems from that?  I'm not in love with the show, but as others have indicated - it is the only real scifi show in play right now, so better than nothing.

I cannot wait for the SHEILD series.  Great to have you know who back in the storylines - not sure about any of the other actors they brought on board, but they seem okay from the trailer.  I like how the format will allow them to step all around the Marvel U, from bad guy agencies to super heroes to super villians - lots of potential there.  They also have some of the great wit from Avengers.  I love a show that can laugh at itself a little (i.e. what do you think SHEILD stands for?).  Must see TV right here - this will be up there at the top of the list with Walking Dead for me unless they somehow really screw it up.

I watched about 30 seconds of it recently, two alien chicks being loaded into a paddy wagon or somesuch thing. It did not have the same feel as BSG to me, did not feel very compelled to watch more. I should love that channel but I just feel they consistently fall short for some reason.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread

The show isn't designed to have a BSG feel. It's more like was said above as an adventure of the week type thing. They could have stuck this show on a different planet and it would have been the same thing.

I've been watching Defiance but I don't really care for it that much.  There's not that much interesting to me, I don't really get where they're trying to go with it...eh.

As far as the 2013-2014 season goes, blah.  It's all crap with the possible exception of SHIELD.  Everything just looks terrible so far.  I haven't done a final look at everything, but what I've seen so far is not interesting, it all has a been there, done that feel to it.  There's not much original.

I'd rather still have CSI: NY and the original Law & Order back compared to anything new they showed, they're spinning off Chicago Fire, which I like, with another lame cop show and the comedies?  I don't watch network comedies.  At least CBS had the common sense to not go with that NCIS Red show they tried to spring on us.

My main complaint is that my cable feed doesn't include The CW because I think they've got probably the best lineup of any of the networks.  And I'm not happy that FX is splitting off with a second channel that's going to lose me a couple of shows I do watch, like It's Always Sunny and The League.

I'm not impressed by SHIELD's trailer, it has the "Gunn" actor from Angel that I thought was not a good actor. I suspect a lot of teasing of characters that won't appear due to movie obligations, like Birds of Prey series teased Batman and Batman villains but didn't use them even during the Batman movie franchise's downtime.

I'm amused Reign, the CW's late in the game attempt to cash in on Game of Thrones, and NBC's Dracula, a late in the game attempt to cash in on vampire schlock.  (3 years from now they'll make their own zombie shows)

I dunno...all these genre soap operas are funny, since in the past soooo many have failed. I won't be watching Drac, because big 3 genre shows I've watched in the past all got cancelled.

This is kind of off the topic of the moment, but a little related...

I was watching a few clips of BSG on youtube over the past couple of days and was reminded of how truly great that show was.  I originally tried watching the first couple of episodes in 2004 when it came out, but just couldn't get into it, largely because of the style it was filmed in.  However, I gave it a chance again last summer on Netflix and absolutely loved that show, from the beginning to the end and everything in between.  IMO, that is the best sci-fi series.

Okay, back to the discussion...

I have a handful of shows I actually watch and a handful I DVR and watch as the week goes on and I don't have something to watch before bed.  I'd be interested in seeing what everyone watches religiously and what you watch just to have something to do.  I'll post a list of my own later after I get back from eating.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: Scockery on May 18, 2013, 07:44 PM
If there's a show I watch when I have nothing better to do that is SUPERNATURAL.

I actually avoided it when it first aired, thinking it was another monster of the week show shot in dreary Vancouver where all the monsters look human or take human form. Over the years I'd catch the intro or even leave the t.v. on and see an episode now or then. Then when I was working an evening shift, I started watching TNT's 3 hour block of it in the AM after waking up. I watched the later seasons first (the show is NOT hard to follow). And when they got back to season 1, I realized that every thing I thought about the show was correct...it started out a dreary monster/demon of the week ho-hum series. I think the funny thing about the show is how much it has in common with CHARMED, which TNT replays before Supernatural.  Siblings at the center of THE cosmic good vs evil struggle.   Constantly battling demons. Missing parents. Yup. Supernatural is a chick show!  :D

That means I've watched Charmed. I admit it. I've watched some of the new Beauty and the Beast, which is pretty lame...Lana from Smallville as an NYC cop. Yeah, right...

DR WHO is another one I can take or leave. Some times it seems really engaging, other times it's shovel full of nonsense that takes its mythology a tad too seriously.

Family Guy is another one. Sometimes I watch, but lately, I do not. I think part of the thing is that all the characters are detestable on some level.

Bob's Burgers I almost got into. But sometimes it's just irritating.

The shows I religiously watch are:

Hawaii 5-0, The Walking Dead, and Southland.  And I got all caught up on Breaking Bad this past fall on Netflix. So I'll be watching this and Falling Skies over the summer.

The shows I end up DVRing and watching later in the week as I have time:
Revolution
Defiance
Vegas
The Office.

Sometimes it takes me a week or two to watch these.  However, it looks like come the next TV season I'll have three of those shows knocked off my list as Southland was not renewed by TNT (a real surprise to a number of people) and Vegas was cancelled. Vegas wasn't really a surprise.  The plot was decent, but the characters were rather cardboard and a bit cheezy.  Revolution is getting better this time around.  However, the acting is still kind of stiff, but again, it's getting better.  I think NBC is really trying to turn it into a version of Lost.  I can't comment too much on Lost as I never watched it.  NBC has been putting so many twists and turns into Revolution that you can sometimes get lost just trying to figure out what is going on.  Maybe it's best with that show just to keep the storyline simple.

Simpsons (don't enjoy it anymore but I have never missed an episode and a 23 year commitment is not to be taken lightly)
Family Guy (still makes me laugh...occasionally)
Archer (probably the funniest thing on TV right now)
Parks & Recreation  (a nice little show, not screamingly funny but has its moments, i will watch anything Amy Poehler does though in recognition of her affiliation with the UCB, which was one of the greatest things EVER)
Walking Dead (only the best show on TV period)
Dark Skies (when it returns)
ATHF/Squidbillies/Superjail/Metalocalypse,Eric Andre Show - because Adult Swim is made for weirdos like me :))

Each year, I watch fewer and fewer shows. The ones I pick up don't seem to last. And the ones I keep up with are slowly dwindling. That's nice though, because I find as I age I have less and less patience with watching TV.

I've got...

- Walking Dead (duh)
- Game of Thrones (missed Season 2 so until I catch up watching pretty much for the boobies)
- How I Met Your Mother (not as good as it once was but wrapping up and still humorous)
- Family Guy (meh, still has it's moments)
- American Dad (this show has really evolved into something special but I feel like I'm the only one who watches it)
- The League
- Sunny in Philadelphia (losing momentum with each episode the past few seasons...)
- Various college sports

Recently I got a Hulu account that I share with a coworker in exchange for access to his Netflix, so I'm catching up on Breaking Bad and shows like that. Hulu is pretty bad though. I've only used it a handful of times, usually when the networks decide they want to screw with DVRs and set odd show times.

Anybody watch Falling Skies last night?

Look's like a good season is in the works.  You could tell there is a bigger budget and there have been a ton of off-screen changes.  Looks like the writers may be trying to turn the show into a deeper/darker show with a lot more character development.

I spaced and missed it, but I love the show. Am hoping to catch it On Demand prior to the next episode Sunday night. Bummer we only get 10 again this year, but that seems their norm.

Realize most don't care, but I feel compelled to give a major shout-out for an extremely satisfying season finale from Falling Skies. The really knocked it out of the park, wrapping up some of the key loose ends from previous seasons, laying the groundwork for next year, and most importantly FINALLY killing off $%^* Karen.

Thank you for a job well done! (Can we get some toys out of this property though?)

See you guys next summer...

Anyone unlucky enough to have Charter?  FXX is only available on a Sports Package that costs an additional $10 a month.  Their reasoning is that FXX replaced some lame Soccer channel and that is where it should stay.  It is also not available in HD.  Which means no Sunny, no The League...no happy OCB :-[

Ugh, that sucks. I freaked out for about 10 minutes last night before I finally tracked down the new channel on Comcast. Still no idea why they moved those shows, it's like they want to make it hard for people to watch.

Good to see both of these back. I missed Rafi and Sweet Dee.

I'm still watching it, the shiny newness has worn off a little, and my enthusiasm has waned, but I'm sticking it out. It's starting to feel like a bad "Fringe" rip-off at this point though.

I tie it all back to the central problem with this show. You can't have a show set in the Marvel Universe with no actual super heroes or super villains. Otherwise it just gets tiresome quickly. No more nameless scientists, rich magnates, etc. I want guys in costumes robbing banks!

I think some suit at the studio fears the first sight of spendex will make the show a mockery. Screw that. Be true to the source material!

And where the hell is Dum Dum Dugan?!?!

I'll stick with it another week...then a shift change at my work, I won't be home to watch....will I bother to watch it On Demand? Dunno.

I watched The Tomorrow People...it was better when it was a movie called JUMPER (yes, I know there was a 70's Tomorrow People, but I never saw it). There was no sublty in the pilot episode, villain is obviously villain, good guys are clearly good guys. Well filmed, but lifeless. Another Amnell brother whose acting is more irritating than Stephen's.

ARROW is back and now Ollie is trying not to kill the criminals. BOO!!! I guess that's more like the comics, but it leads to silly tying up baddies for cops to find scenes. Summer Glau is now on the show, so the series will be cancelled within a year anyway.

Does anybody watch Meet the Goldbergs? I had moderate hopes for the show and then the first episode was not very enticing but I stuck around for a second episode that was mediocre.  I tried to watch a third last night and made it halfway through before deleting it from the DVR.

It is very Wonder Years like, but not as good.  It was an 80's type show so I was really hoping it would keep my interest.

Homeland is always kind of a mixed bag... but what a dull, frustrating episode this week.  The two leads with their assorted captors for the entire hour with basically nothing resolved?  Excellent performances (as usual), but kind of a snorefest.

Oh man, yeah...that was BRUTAL. Gemma don't play! That show keeps upping the ante somehow, good stuff.

Kind of at the halfway point now for the 2013 TV season overall, some random thoughts:

Outside of Walking Dead, I can't think of any other show I'm enjoying more right now than American Horror Story. Terrific scenery-chewing acting chops, horrifically entertaining over-the-top violence (melon-baller to the eye FTW!) and a plot that continues to twist and evolve with every episode. Loving this season.

Best newcomer award goes to The Blacklist, I love the instant gratification that comes with getting the bad guy every week, not to mention the smug perfection of James Spader simply being better than everyone else and knowing it. I don't think his Gal Friday is a particularly good actress but she's not insufferable.

Close second to Almost Human - this has been better than expected, I figured it would be some dumbed down police procedural with a goofy cyborg twist, but it's actually darker and more interesting than I suspected it would be going in. And Karl Urban is so money.

SHIELD has been a solid meh. It teases so much potential but they don't seem to want to take it to the next level. The last few episodes were a distinct improvement, but I still find myself at least a couple of times each week saying "these idiotic jackasses are supposed to be a super-skilled espionage and counter-terrorism agency?" The writing is just not very tight and WTF are the superheroes already? Do you really need expensive CGI for Power Man and Iron Fist? OR any other the other galaxy of waiting secondary heroes you have at your disposal?

Overall I still think Walking Dead is the best thing on TV right now. Can't wait for the back half of this season!

I agree - I kinda wish it was ending instead of them continuing on.

Maybe they plan on going in a completely different direction with Season 4 - I'll still watch, but it seems to me like the story of the two major characters should be over....

I know sitcoms aren't discussed here too much, but has anyone caught the Goldbergs?  A lot of nice references for those of us who grew up in the 80s, including lots of toy references.  In last night's episode, the youngest child (based on the show's creator) brings his girlfriend to his room then commences gee king out and showing her his transformers, Castle Grayskull, and USS Flagg.

I've been checking out True Detective for the past couple of weeks on HBO.  Thus far it's in keeping with the dramatic tone that HBO has been able to strike with it's original series.  I think it captures some of the painstaking search for details that detectives have to undertake in order to solve a real crime.  And it also seems to capture the darkness that's in some of the people who are called to investigate murders.

I get the sense that this show might take some patience.  At least before things really pick up.  But they've definitely got my interest for now.

I've been DVRing the show and last night finally sat down to start watching. I got about 20 minutes into it and it was so slow developing I shut it off in favor of watching my DVRd Pawn Stars.  Does anybody have any thoughts on Helix?  I was hoping for something good to serve as a fill in of sorts until TWD is back on.

Also, did anybody watch the two episodes of The Assets that ABC ran? I actually enjoyed that show and was a little irritated it got canceled after two of six episodes aired.  I guess my cup of tea on shows isn't exactly the same for everyone else.

Go back a page for more discussion on Helix.  If you give it to end of E2 you won't be disappointed.  3rd episode has some good twists and new mysteries.  I haven't watch 4 yet.  Its a lot like Lost without the character building flashbacks and weaker actors, but not a bad filler as we wait for AD to return.

Anyone watching Toy Hunter every week...I get a kick
At seeing what Jordan finds but man the price he pays or says he pays is bull-honkey.  He said he paid $300 for a MASK Boulder Hill loose with box that at most is worth $150 and said he was going to sell for $500.  And it's every week seething like that...my new favorite game to play is Searching eBay to see what he thinks he'll "get" vs what is reality.  I still like the show don't get me wrong
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: Jesse James on March 19, 2014, 10:55 PM
I'm not a HUGE fan, and mostly because of that...  I think there's some drinking game in there where the difference between what he says he'll get and what Ebay's saying he'll actually get could be used to determine who drinks what, and how much.

His Star Wars one that was on recently, wow...

I don't watch the show much though because of that, but that's just me.  I check it now and again, like that episode recently where he had all the 12-backs and stuff.

Yeah, that's why I check it now and then...  Just basically to look at toys I remember. :)  I'd have preferred something a little more realistic on the pricing and toy dealing...  There is a real world out there of course, but it is still fun to look at stuff and just ignore the prices.

Saw some Joe stuff...  Always love seeing Joe stuff.

Sometimes in the background you see people have stuff like Starcom or Battlebeasts in the package...  That's fun.

One thing about Toy Hunter to keep in mind is that Jordan basically knows what the people have for sale before he ever gets there.  He and the producers set up the visits so he already knows he's buying certain things and the sellers know he's offering dealer prices and that he's buying to sell for profit later.  So, yes, it's not really a shock when he comes across a sealed Sectaurs Hyve playset in a guy's basement.

One of the storage auction shows, maybe all of them(?), are known to have seeded some of the units for filming but I don't think that's the case with this show.  They take the time to track the people down that have what they're looking for.

As for picking stuff up at shows like C2E2 or whatever, I don't know exactly how they do those but you can tell that some of the filming takes place before the shows open in the morning because there aren't crowds around.  But I don't know if Jordan just finds stuff randomly or if he's contacted sellers prior to coming to those shows.

I didn't get to go to the presentation last year, but I went to the 2012 Toy Hunter panel at NYCC and they talked about a lot of these types of things.  I did a write-up on it (NYCC Toy Hunter Panel (http://imperialholocron.com/new-york-comic-con-toy-hunter-panel/))

Jordan seem to seek out the high end buyers and sellers whenever possible.  As a result I think some eBay prices may not be applicable to what he's doing. His operation is actually local to me. And I think back in the day he actually worked at our local Starlog store.  That closed down around 15 years ago, just for reference.

What I've been enjoying on his show?  Just how much he travels to the Cincinatti area. He seems to be really tapped in with some of the old Kenner employees and knows where to find some of the rarest of the rare from legit sources.  And so many of those guys still reside in the Cincy area where they worked for Kenner.

I'm liking Believe so far but i can kinda see where its going, lil dogooder girl wants to help everyone she runs into by using her superpowers while ******bag daddy just wants to pull hijinks. Of course he can't stand the lil girl but he comes to love her awwwww.  ::)
but kinda cool to see primetime superhero even if its a lil kid.

Resurrection has been good so far, i don't know anything about the French version so i'd like to see where this goes.

either way i'm liking all the kinda rescent sci-fi fantasy stuff thats been on primetime last couple years even though i don't watch 1/2 of it it been interesting.

I've been watching Believe, and I like it pretty well so far.  Haven't seen Resurrection.  I wanted to try watching it, but honestly it is just tough to find enough time for all the shows anymore, particularly the hour-long ones.

On the subject of Toy Hunter, I really enjoy catching it every week - primarily to see the toys he finds, or to see some other people's collections.  It is crazy the stuff some people have.  I like the episodes where he finds someone who has, for example, a huge Joe collection - or like this week, a guy who had nearly every He-Man/MOTU toy ever made, all loose.  Cool stuff.  Although I think it is the second time I've seen it on the show, I honestly was never aware of the Eternia playset for that line, pretty cool.

Also, on the Joe subject, not sure if anyone here watches Community, but next week they are doing an entire episode in the style of the 80s toon, kind of cool for those interested.

Ok, just watched this tonight, and I'd highly recommend watching it if you are a fan of '80s Joe (the toon or the toyline) at all.  I don't know if it is even totally necessary to regularly watch Community to enjoy it either.  The entire episode is animated in nearly the same way as the old cartoon, and there are also "vintage style" toy commercials spread throughout (and a PSA at the end).  Very fun episode, I suggest checking it out On Demand, on Hulu/Itunes/etc., pretty cool.

Anyone check out Turn on Sunday night?  Rough go to be up against GoT for them, but I checked it out over GoT and watched the latter on In Demand then Monday...

I liked Turn a lot, actually.  Had a brutality to it most people don't often think of with the Revolution...  Not sure why other than I feel like the politics and birth of the U.S. tends to get the majority of the focus in schools over the military conflict itself...  That was my experience anyway.

I liked the show though.  Felt like the production was good, and I'm looking forward to next week's episode.

Jesse you are right on about politics taking the brunt of the focus in school and not the battles.  In Texas, our US history is heavily on the documents, strengths/weaknesses of each side, and the major leaders.  The only battles we really teach are Lexington/Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown.  And we teach nothing of tactics...at least we aren't expected to.  When I was teaching US history I always threw in a little tactical doctrine over the course of the war.

Anyway, I DVR'd Turn and plan to watch it in the next couple of days when I can find some time.

Post by: Jesse James on April 10, 2014, 11:30 PM
We learned a lot about F&I war up here because it largely started and took place here...  We had an odd focus on that when I was young.  The Revolution, really practically skipped all combat and just focused on the documents, founding fathers, etc.

I never had a class on WWI, WWII, etc.  Seriously.  We got to the Civil War and that was usually where it ended.  Lot of focus on the Civil War though, not just the politics but combat, daily life, etc.  Both history teachers in my school were big into that and since I re-enacted at the time (signal flag kid) they used me heavily to bring crap in and talk about it.  I didn't even have to take the final.  :)

My gf's boys seemed to cover everything...  I helped both with WWI Trench dioramas which were their project for that era.  I should post the little dioramas we made in a weekend.  I guess that should be "we" made.  :-X

The boys picked it knowing I'd go giddy making crap for them.

That show is shot in and around Richmond here at some of the local plantations. The daughter of a woman I work with is on the effects crew, supposedly there is a good chance of a second season unless it bombs completely.

Historical fiction is not my bag, but it does have a lot of compelling elements, hope it does well for them.

After a long, long hiatus, The Boondocks returned to Adult Swim last night.  And people watched. (http://www.deadline.com/2014/04/adult-swim-the-boondocks-big-in-return/#more-718309)  It was the highest-rated TV show in the 18-34 demo across all channels, broadcast & cable.

So Archer ends, and The Boondocks returns.  Nice transition.

Where's my new episodes of Squidbillies, Aqua Teen and Metalocalypse?
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: BillCable on April 23, 2014, 10:44 AM
I think it was "in production" for a good, long while rather than being resurrected.  There was controversy with season 3 where they didn't air a couple episodes that were critical of BET.  That led to creative differences when they started on season 4, to the point where McGruder dropped out as showrunner.  And I speculate that what they did was wrap up what was already in progress to produce season 4, which they're calling the final season.  I'd be nice if these ratings prompt CN to reconsider that course.

Caught the Gotham pilot on Hulu... overall it was not good, but also not bad. Its main weakness was that it suffered from Pilot Syndrome where things are just awkward overall. Second episode will probably better.

Didn't care for the dialogue or most of the cast. Bullock grew on me even though all I see is the dad from Grounded for Life. Not a fan of the OC dude as Gordon. Jada Pinkett Smith had the most interesting character but as I said, the lines were really corny. Cameos were out of control, almost SW Prequel-like in the "LOOK AT THESE CHARACTERS WHO AREN'T CHARACTERS YET!"

Still, I liked it better than what I saw of Agents of SHIELD, so I'll at least give it a few episodes.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: BillCable on September 25, 2014, 09:09 AM
I thought Gotham was ok.  Horning in every character possible was a mistake, IMO.  Riddler, Cat Woman, Penguin, Ivy and possibly the Joker, all introduced all at once?  Not the best decision.  Hopefully it'll improve.

Second season premiere of SHIELD was awesome.  Loved the wrecking ball homage.  Also loved that the Absorbing Man had some intelligence to him, rather than the dumb brute from the comics.  Really excellent execution.

So...Agent Carter is in the books now. I ended up liking this more than I thought I would, even though it sort of fizzled at the end with the whole Kingsmen ripoff. Not sure I got the point of letting Dottie live though, or pairing up the Doc with Zola. Are they planning to make more of these someday?

And hats off to Parks & Recreation for a very enjoyable 7 season run...what a great finale. This show was never particularly great, but it had many memorable moments and ultimately felt like time well spent to me when I watched. (Never missed an episode)

That's how it feels to me- that they're building up to Season 2.  The Doc and Zola, Sousa letting his feelings known for Peggy, and Peggy spilling Steve's blood into the East River (in a sense, letting him go so that she move on and be with Sousa).

As for Dottie living, perhaps there's more to her (Winter Soldier) than we know?  I thought we'd also get some info on the Winter Soldier project but maybe I'll have to wait until Season 2.  Also, what's Dottie's purpose now? Rescue the Doc and Zola.

I enjoyed it.  Good fun.

I finally got around to checking out Jordan Hembrough's shop last weekend.  His shop is all of 20 minutes from my house, but he really didn't have a brick and mortar presence until recently.  He had been more of an online dealer/broker.  Anyway, he's a genuinely nice guy and was very much up for chatting.  And does he LOVE Star Wars!!!  He has some amazing vintage stock in his store, as well as some cool modern things like GG's jumbo sized vintage style figures.  And to top it off, he even has production blueprints for some of the Jabba's Palace droids from RETURN OF THE JEDI!!!

We talked briefly about the TOY HUNTER series.  Travel Channel had a major change in direction in the past couple of years, so Jordan and the production company that was putting together TOY HUNTER have been shopping a 4th season of the show around.  I get the sense that they don't have any takers yet, but I could really see the show doing well if they tailored it for an online audience.  Web shows are what's happening now.

True Detective Season 2 Trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OfU7CGY5DQ)

Just finished the last episode of Season I.  Great conclusion and wrap up to everything.  I wish we were getting more of these initial detectives, but will be interesting to see what they do with the next installment.  If its half as good as Season I it will be worth watching.

I'd also recommend Bloodline to anyone who liked True Detective.  Similar narration with the storyline bouncing between different timelines as a mystery is revealed about a well known family in the Florida Keys and their black sheep brother/son.

I'm out of TV viewing material when Mad Men wraps up as well.  We watch a few recorded sitcoms like Modern Family from time to time and will catch the back half of Amazing Race, but I'm at a loss for anything new until Orange is the New Black and Fear the Walking Dead hit this Summer.  Did anyone catch Better Call Saul on AMC?  Worth watching?

To anyone looking for a good, make that GREAT, TV show - Watch The Americans on FX.   Easily one of the top shows on TV right now and no one is watching it but me and a few critics, I think.

It's one of two TV shows where I actually sit still and focus 100% on it (Game of Thrones being the other one).  Most complaints I see are folks "not wanting to cheer for the Russians" but the show is so, so much more than just cold war stuff.  The spy stuff is almost secondary to the family stuff.  Excellent show.  Give it a try.

I thought the Finale was good, not great.  At least they wrapped up most of the loose ends.  Did you guys take from the ending that Draper returned to make the Coke ad?  It was mentioned earlier that he could come back and work on Coke, so that was my interpretation, but not sure if others had a different take.  Maybe Peggy made it or came from Joan's new production company?  Or just there to leave you wondering about any of those possible scenarios.

I caught the first few episodes of Wayward Pines this weekend and it was pretty solid.  For those that haven't heard of it, a Secret Service guy wakes up in WP, Idaho and can't get out of the town.  There's active debate as to whether he is hallucinating things due to a medical condition or if the weirdness he sees is real.  The townspeople are all really weird and clearly hiding something.  It has that early-on LOST vibe where you're just not sure what is going to happen next or what in the world is going on.  Definitely worth a watch if you liked shows like Lost or True Detective.

That was my take on it - especially since the girl at the commune that ran the office inspired the look of one of the girls in the Coke commercial - they had nearly identical hair color and braids, and were wearing the same clothes.

I gotta say as much as I loved Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul has been an extremely fun look at the Saul/Mike backstory.   Love the little Breaking Bad cameos as well...great stuff

Season finale next week.  Its been a great season 2.

I really think they should call the show, "Better Call Mike".  I think his backstory and adventures are a hell of a lot more fun than Saul's at this point.  Glad to see he is getting more involved with some punks to add some fun to the show.  I like the Saul story lines, but can't wait for them to get back to Mike each time.  I can't wait for the two of them to get really mixed up together.

I wasn't a film school major, so I can't really put all my thoughts together well on this, but I love the "cinematography" with this show.  Some of the camera angles are really cool.  The way they use music is sweet.  I love the sound effects - this week it was the buzzing fluorescent lights and all the electronics freaking out Saul's brother.  It seems like half art project and half commercial tv serial.

‘Toy Wars’ Drama From Josh Gad, Josh Schwartz & Seth Gordon Set at Amazon (http://deadline.com/2016/09/toy-wars-drama-josh-gad-josh-schwartz-seth-gordon-amazon-hasbro-mattel-1201822915/)

Quote
Actor-writer Josh Gad (Angry Birds) is set to star and co-write, Josh Schwartz is attached to co-write and showrun and Seth Gordon is expected to direct Toy Wars, a limited drama series in development at Amazon, which follows the real-life battle between American toy giants Hasbro, the company behind GI Joe, Transformer and My Little Pony toys, and Barbie maker Mattel in the 1980s and 1990s.

Gad, Schwartz and Ryan Dixon will co-write the project based on the non-fiction book by G. Wayne Miller Toy Wars: The Epic Struggle Between G.I. Joe, Barbie, and the Companies that Make Them. Schwartz will serve as showrunner, with Gordon attached to direct the pilot, subject to availability.

Might be cool.

So, I've never been much of a DC guy, but my son and I started watching The Flash over the holidays.  We went a few episodes into season 2, then went back to watch the first season of Arrow as well.  That's out of order for the cross-over events, but my son is 10 and the campy Flash cast and stories were a better introduction to this universe than the darker Arrow stores would have been.  I have to say, I'm really impressed with what DC-TV brings to the table and we love both shows.  The characters are interesting, the stories are fun, and there's just the right mix of individual plots that tie into a bigger picture reveal.  They don't take themselves overly seriously either, with a comic relief character of sorts cleverly supporting each hero's show.  They also bring in other B-Grade DC characters (Hawkgirl, Earth 2 Flash, Huntress) from time to time, which I love learning more about.  These are at least on par with Marvel's Netflix shows and Agents of Shield, if not better given the more "all audiences" approach.

I really wish DS was mapping these characters and storylines to their movie universe/Justice League initiative.

My daughter and I watch the Flash. It's kind of the only superhero she knows. It's a good show and doesn't get all teen relationship mushy. It's a better show then AOS. I wish they would bring back the Trickester more often. He is played by Mark Hamill doing his Joker imitation.

I've been looking forward to this for months but we dumped cable a few weeks ago and I only realized five minutes before it came on that we actually DON'T have FX in any of our streaming services. Doh. Hoping I can check it out at their website or something.

I wrapped up Legion the other day - pretty impressed with the series.  While separate from the X-Verse, the storyline with the Shadow King felt really similar to what I read in the X-Men comics decades ago.  I like the hints about mutants and his dad without having to go all the way with it or completely re-write it.  I feel like I need to watch it again though to catch everything now that I now what was going on.

This show is great at showing that Saul Goodman was made, and he's not a creation of Jimmy Magill.  Look at how, although he started out as a con man, when Jimmy passed the bar, he honestly was trying to be like his brother and Chuck thwarted him at very turn...to the point that Chuck has destroyed his own life trying to destroy Jimmy.  In effect Chuck has created the Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad when he was trying to stop it all along!

Love this show and can't wait for next season!

The Gifted was a bit better than I expected. Though I am reminded of CW's the Tomorrow People which I bailed on and it got canned after one season. The production is a bit better than that, though.

I still enjoy GOTHAM, but it's wacky and takes more chances than the CW's DC shows. Agents of SHIELD would often make me doze off.

I missed last week's and just caught up last night, still have to watch the finale. I do hope it is good. I have been growing steadily more disappointed as this season wore on. Agree there were at least 2 full episodes of wheel spinning that added little to the overall story. They really should stick with 8 eps per year, IMHO.

Still, it's about the only thing I watch on TV anymore, always a feast for the eyes.

Hulu has it I know.

I finally watched the Finale, didn't like it, mostly for the same reasons I didn't like the season overall. Didn't care for the whole process of tearing down everything they built up over Season One. Not surprising in retrospect though as I recall in interviews with the showrunner how he was talking about never having had to do a second season of anything with the same cast and storylines. (Fargo pretty much reinvents itself every year)

I think may wait and read how the next season turns out before deciding whether to keep watching.

Maybe my questions will drive this in to the Sarlacc pit, but just curious as to how objective it is.  Does it get in to the inherent biases and axes to grind that different publications bring to their reporting of the news?  I'd be interested in watching an objective discussion on the agenda driven and right vs. left bias in reporting that we seem to have today.
Title: Re: Official Television Thread
Post by: Nicklab on June 20, 2018, 11:05 AM
It follows the reporters and editors of the NY Times through their process.  The Trump White House is a huge component of their work.  But they also cover significant stories outside of that:  the impact of policy shifts from the administration (both positive and negative) throughout the country, Americans' perception of Washington and the media, the sexual harassment claims against people like Bill O'Reilly and Harvey Weinstein, along with the violence in Charlottesville, VA.

Additionally, it deals with some of the BUSINESS of the Times:  an earnings conference call, shifts from print to online content, the immediacy of deadlines, as well as a walkout of a tremendous number of newspaper guild members because of restructuring at the Times.  You also get a sense of the toll that the work takes on these journalists:  extremely long work hours, the toll it takes on their families, or their personal isolation because the work is so demanding.

Watching Times reporters asking questions of their sources and interview subjects, it becomes very clear that these journalists take the work incredibly seriously.  And they choose their words VERY carefully.  They ask questions VERY carefully.  It addressed how the Times works to keep their own house in order:  harassment charges, social media policy, etc.  It also shows how some political figures who routinely like to use the media as a punching bag are also incredibly chummy with reporters.  Watch Times political reporter Jeremy Peters interact with Steve Bannon and their interactions.  It's enlightening.

As for anything beyond that?  The audience is left to make that judgement for themselves.

With the quarantine in full effect, I am finally getting around to watching a few shows and movies that have been on my checklist for a while.  My son and I just started watching "The Gifted."  For those that don't know, it's a X-Men universe with the show focusing on several new mutants (Blink, Polaris, Thunderbird among others).  Not a big X fan, but it's been a fun ride through the first half of Season 1.  Has a bit of a Heroes vibe to it, with various references to the X-Men or Brotherhood as Easter Eggs, without really telling us which characters were on what team and what happened to all of them.  One of the early episodes even has Stan Lee walking out of a bar - hope they find a way to keep that up or something similar as it always makes me smile.  Definitely going to finish out the season and see where it goes.

Anybody watching "Better Call Saul"?  The last batch of episodes just kicked off with the series finally wrapping up in a few weeks.

Just like Breaking Bad, the writing on this show is amazing, as is the cinematography.  I'm not a real TV critic, but you can really tell the difference between a show like Better Call Saul and pulpy fun shows like Stranger Things, Ozark, etc.  There are no plot holes.  No goofy plot devices.  No sloppy writing.

Better Call Saul is definitely a slow burn in comparison to Breaking Bad, but its really picked up steam this season and is downright fantastic.

I'm watching Dave.  I adore this show and can't wait to see how it all ends.

Another show that's available on Apple+ that I highly recommend is For All Mankind.  It's an alternate history show where the Soviets put the first man on the Moon.  They're releasing season 3 now and it's the mid '90's and the space race is still going on!  Just an incredible show although I may be a bit biased because I am such a NASA nerd.

Very cool.  Someday I want to see a rocket launch.  Every time I'm in FL I consider it, but then realize that many launches are usually delayed by days, weeks, months so waiting around for one to happen is a serious commitment if you're just visiting.

I've been to Kennedy Space Center a couple times and its always a sweet science and history hardcore fest.  I remember going there as a kid in the late 70's right before the Columbia took off for the first time and attending a few presentations on all the new Space Shuttle tech.  I can still remember them turning off the lights, taking a blowtorch to the ceramic shield tiles, watching them glow in the dark when superheated, and then only a minute or two later picking it up with their bare hands.

30 years ago, when I was in school at UCF, I could see Shuttle launches as well as various other rockets.  I actually saw the launches of GPS satellites back then I'm working on orbit support for today!

Today with ULA and SpaceX, the operations tempo is much higher than back in the day.  SpaceX is averaging a launch a week with Starlink among other launches...I was there for about two and a half weeks heling to get the family settled before I had to come back to Colorado for work stuff and we saw three different launches!  Like I said, that's not getting old anytime soon.

Back to the topic....I'm still in awe of what happened on Better Call Saul last night....these next five episodes are going to be a wild ride!

My fantasy itch is being scratched by Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon right now, I'll probably check out Rings of Power at some point.  What bothers me is that for a show they spent a Billion Dollars on, they have very little of Tolkien's actually adapt to the story.  I've only seen clips, but Galadriel does not like Galadriel should act.  It's just not grabbing my enthusiasm enough to watch it right now.

If you're looking for spot on adaptation then stay away. If you can deal with an adaptation that takes lots of freedoms but still is new LotR and give the whole season it's due before rushing to final thoughts then it's very fun/good.

I would say if you believe Galadriel has to act a certain way then just skip it.

I am a big fan of the word adaptation not needing to be very rigid to still enjoy things though.

I finally finished Rings of Power.  I’m not a hardcore LOTR fan - I’ve seen the movies multiple times, read the books including The Hobbit multiple times.  Most of the stuff I’ve really liked, although The Hobbit movies were way too stretched out (probably should have just been two movies).

I don’t remember all the lore and mentioned backstories, so I don’t have any real axe to grind about the portrayals of Galadriel, etc.

I sort of enjoyed the series.  The story was good and the scenery/cinematography was gorgeous.  My biggest gripe was that everything is 30% too drawn out and long.  Every episode was an hour and probably should have been edited down to 40 minutes.  It felt like each scene was three beats too long with extra camera angles, extra dialog, etc. that should have been trimmed.

This verboseness isn’t exclusive to Rings of Power though.  It almost seems to be more prevalent in streaming shows these days where there isn’t a hard time constraint, or even necessarily a clean break or cliff hanger to wrap up each show.  I don’t know if that is leading to lazy editing or creators getting too full of themselves, but I feel like most of these shows really need to have a faster pace - either a shorter time frame with the existing story or more stuff needs to happen in the longer time frame.  I felt House of the Dragon suffered from the same challenge where the pace got way too slow at times with very little meaningfully happening in some of the episodes.

Its kind of like watching the Director’s Cuts for the LOTR movies.  The theatrical 3 hour versions were far more entertaining.  Watching the 4 hour director’s cuts versions were often a bit painful and its clear why they were edited down to a still probably too long three hours.  I know some hardcore fans love the scene for scene accuracy of the director’s cuts, but they don’t make for better movies.

I was glad that Andor mostly dodged this slow pace with its 12 episodes.  There were a couple of slower episodes (Aldhani mission story arc) but for the most part things moved well without too much unnecessary dialog and side tangents.

I haven't caught all of this series yet, but appreciate the breakdown.  I'm more interested to see it now after hearing others' thoughts.  I personally think too many movies and TV shows jump through scenes too quickly to advance the plot.  For example, the old "Luke staring at the sunset" in ANH is one of my favorite scenes of all time.  That tension between following your dreams versus your responsibilities and family commitments is just so well done.  We don't get a lot of that kind of art nowadays and I find myself wishing some scenes would just slow down to show how a character is really feeling versus racing to the next plot point.  However, if the scenes are just extended as time filler or to linger on the lighting elements a little longer, that isn't really getting to what I want either.  If it isn't building on the character's thoughts and feelings to make us care more about them and what they're going through, then it's just extra wasted time.  Hoping to catch up over the break to see how GOTHOTD compares.

I finished Willow today.

Overall it was just okay but I thought it was tremendously uneven.  I don't know if they had a totally random set of writers and directors for each show, but the character portrayals were all over the board, and seemed to vary from episode to episode.

There were parts that were really good and parts that were head scratchingly random.

Ultimately I think it could have benefited from a simpler plot, fewer characters, and fewer story arc tangents to get a much sharper focus.

I'm too lazy to do a Google search, but it looked like they shot a lot of this in The Volume that they used for The Mandalorian, although there were some really glaring scenes where the sightlines just didn't hold together very well.

I really really want to watch Willow but the IMDB score is so low that it’s dropped down on my list…

Willow was just disjointed and dumb.  At any point in the show, Willow goes from I'm a wizard to I'm a fraud to I'm a wizard again.  The tone was nothing like the original movie to the point I don't think anyone watched it.

My only hope is that the reason they got Warwick Davis to be in this is because they threw a ton of money at him and he could not turn down that paycheck.

A lot of the main characters are like this, which is why I swear they had totally different writers and directors for each episode that never talked to each other.

It appears they're aiming for a season 2 and 3 of this show.  I really hope they either don't do it or they get a whole lot better at writing/directing this show.

My wife and I tried it. She loved the Willow movie as a kid, I didn't see it until my early 20s but still really liked the movie. So we were both pretty excited about the show. We only made it through one episode and it has been about almost two months since we last watched it...

The show felt very generic, unfortunately like much of the big studio fantasy stuff lately. It really didn't seem to capture much of the *ahem* magic of the original movie. We thought about trying to get through it anyways, but after seeing reviews and general reactions we probably won't go back to it.

We'll just happily rewatch White Lotus instead.

We're watching season 3 of Jack Ryan.  This show is a huge departure from the books, but I do like it.  Probably because they are not trying to adapt any of the novels in this show.

I just finished Last of Us from HBO.  I never played the video game so I can't comment on its accuracy, etc.  Although reading commentary people seem to like the accuracy, but also the freedom that the writers took to dive deeper in to some areas.

Overall I thought the writing was solid, the acting was really good, the characterization was excellent, and the story arcs all made sense.  It wasn't the best thing I've ever seen, but it was solidly entertaining.  My understanding is that there is a season 2 planned too although there really wasn't a cliffhanger so I'm not clear on an overall plot, although I guess there was a part 2 of the video game that the plot is going to follow.

I know some people seem to fall on both sides of the fence with the characterization of GLBT people in movies, and it sounds like that was the case with Last of Us as well.  I read both gripes and accolades on Last of Us around this.  I for one thought the characterization of GLBT relationships was solid and didn't feel forced.

Their take on "zombies" was also pretty cool and different.  There was a head scratcher in there, but for the most part it was entertaining.

I loved it. Thought they did an amazing job of keeping it close to game but changing as needed. Maybe could have been a few more infected but really only to silence some of the people really clamoring for that. Can't wait for season 2.

I will barely comment about the GLBT stuff as I otherwise may lose my mind. I thought it was really well done. Episode 3 was beautiful and for God's sake Episode 7 is right out of a DLC for the game (released after the 2nd game came out). You find out Ellie is gay almost immediately in the 2nd game.

Having never played the games I thought the series was beautifully done and absolutely riveting. Even though it was a series of emotional gut punches, my wife and I couldn't get enough of it. It really has upped the stakes on what shows/movies based on video games can, and should be.
