And secondly, it needs more color:

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: GNR DVD's, anyone got 'em?
« on: October 30, 2003, 05:43 PM »
Here are a couple of threads, from the Home Theatre Forum and DVD Talk, regarding the new DVDs:

Guns N' Roses DVDs Avaliable October 28th (HTF)

Guns n' roses dvd's coming Oct 28th!!! (DVD Talk)

(Watch that HTF thread, though--it was derailed halfway through by some ****** from Oklahoma who couldn't shut up about the concert he went to back in the day. . .)

And this is supposedly the track-listing for the Greatest Hits CD:

01. Welcome To The Jungle
02. Sweet Child O' Mine
03. Patience
04. Paradise City
05. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
06. Civil War
07. You Could Be Mine
08. Don't Cry
09. November Rain
10. Live And Let Die
11. Yesterdays
12. Ain't It Fun
13. Since I Don't Have You
14. Sympathy For The Devil

What a piece of crap.  No "Estranged", but yet we have the horrid cover of "Sympathy".  And no rare or live tracks--the Live at the Ritz version of "Knockin'" from 1988 would have been cool--that was all over the radio in late '88 and '89.

('Course, if they added a rare or live track that I didn't already have, I'd be pissed, too--having to buy it just for that one track, but I digress. . .)  :)

Oh well.  Doesn't look like it's coming out, anyway.

. . .looks like Velvet Revolver may never take off.  That dumb a$$ Weiland got arrested again.  This time DUI, under the influence of narcotics, hitting parked cars and fleeing the scene. . .

Are you kidding me?

Hell, that's vintage G N' R behavior, my friend.  Maybe the old Guns guys are putting Scott Weiland through some hazing or something, to get him up to speed on the G N' R way of things. . .  :)

Their album will be out sometime next year, and I'm looking forward to it much more than Axl's project.  I guess there's a joke going around that says we'll see real Chinese democracy before that album comes out. . .

As for the DVDs--I'll get 'em when I get 'em.  No rush.  I've got them all on VHS, which I hardly ever watch, anyway--and these things are basically the exact same stuff.

Oh, and that reminds me!  I heard last night, that Geffen released the DVDs without Axl's "permission", so now Axl's record company is suing Geffen.  Apparently, there was a (crappy) Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits CD that was scheduled for a November 25 release, which has now been delayed due to the lawsuit.

Sounds a bit silly, but then again, this is Axl we're talking about. . .

More as I find it.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Episode III Released Early
« on: October 24, 2003, 03:15 PM »
Well  I am going to be the first person in line for the film!  That's right dogs.  I am headed out to the theatre with my laptop so I can keep posting back to you folks.  I don't care if I get hungry and cold with the impending Illinois weather coming up.  I will be there in line from now until opening day!  All the media will be covering me and you all will be sooooo jealous!

Hey, uh, maybe you didn't catch the news, but the super-secret exclusive engagement is only going to be at the Cinemark 24 in Twin Hills Mall in Walla Walla, Washington, for next week only.  Just be sure to ask for "Big Momma's House 3".  The theatre attendents have been trained and ordered to feign any knowledge of the Episode III release.

You don't ask fo' Big Momma, you don't get in.

Thanxs, for clearing things up, i appreciate it.  I was a tad bit upset.  But it's all good now.  This is for you Virex  ::)

You know--you're lucky.  I had a lengthy, scathing reply all typed out and ready to go, which would have made you wet your pants, but because my internet connection's a bit wonky, I lost it all.  I'm not in the mood to type it again.

Plus, with this reply, I thought you sounded a bit young, so I checked your profile for the first time and it showed that you're just sixteen.

So, consider yourself spared.

You're sixteen--so go out and get you some tail, like other kids your age, and quit posting things about the DVDs using words like "officially" when they're coming from places called "Rebelscum" and "The Rumor Mill".

Leave all the sad speculating and complaining to the pathetic individuals like myself.

It, is a lie he was just being sarcastic to me, it is false.

Dude, seriously, I was at Ain't It Cool News and that was what a guy named DarthObi-1SkywalkerStarWarsRoolzLeiaLuvr195485 reported.

And that guy's always been on the level.

So, you guys, you non-believers of me and DarthObi-1SkywalkerStarWarsRoolzLeiaLuvr195485--just sit back and continue to do whatever it is that you do, while I pack my bags, gas up my Volkswagen van, and prepare for the trip (and movie) of a lifetime.

So long, suckers. . .

When it's officially announced, we're ALL gonna know.  It'll be everywhere--Starwars.com, TheForce.net, Originaltrilogy.com, all of the different collecting sites, all of the different DVD sites, everywhere, with the official release date, and everything.  It won't be from a guy named "Mainland05" who thought he saw something on some website somewhere.

In related news, I heard that they've finished Episode III early and it will start showing in an exclusive engagement at a Walla Walla, Washington theatre next week under the assumed title "Big Momma's House 3".

Take it to the bank.

. . .so you can see that getting an Xbox is a better decision?   ???

I'm gonna call bullsh.t on that one.

I've got all three systems, and each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages compared to the others.  Sure, in terms of what it can do, graphics and sound-wise, the XBox is the best out of the three, but the GameCube isn't that far behind, and has got some great exclusive games and is really affordable to boot.

The best decision is buying the system that has the most games that you want to play.  Simple as that.

Watto's Junk Yard / Keeping up with the Joneses
« on: October 19, 2003, 03:54 PM »
Okay, folks, here's the deal with the Indiana Jones prices this week:

Best Buy:  "Hot Price" ($44.99)

*There is an exclusive bonus disc at Best Buy, included on-pack with the box set.  Here's what their ad has to say about it:

Quote
Own all 3 Indiana Jones movies for the first time on DVD, a 4th bonus DVD Making The Trilogy, PLUS a Best Buy Exclusive 5th DVD Raiders Of The Lost Ark Classic Featurette.  This disc has rarely-seen footage and exclusive scenes featuring the cast and crew of this beloved film. While supplies last.  Minimum 250 per store.  No rainchecks.

People have been reporting that the bonus disc is around ten minutes long.  I have no idea what exactly is on it, or how good (or lame) it is, or if most of the same stuff is covered in the fourth disc in the box, or if this will be available elsewhere in the future.  If you're a big Indy fan, though (as I think a lot of us are), it might be worth tracking down.

Target: Low Price ($45.99)

*Free 12-pack of Dr. Pepper with purchase of the Trilogy

Toys 'R' Us: $49.99

*Don't bother

Circuit City: (reportedly) $49.99

*Don't bother

Wal-Mart:  ?

*I'm assuming that most Wal-Marts will probably beat Best Buy's price of $44.99 by a few cents, so it might be worth checking there if you don't care about Best Buy's bonus disc.

Eckerd: $34.99

*Yes, you read that right:  Eckerd.  (I realize that not everyone has Eckerd stores where they live.)  Now, if you do have Eckerd stores in your area, here's the deal:  They've got the fool-screen version (light brown box) pictured in their ad, and reportedly, that's all they'll be carrying.  So, more than likely, no widescreen (dark brown box) at Eckerd.  However, I would imagine that you could probably take an Eckerd ad to a store that price-matches, like Best Buy or Wal-Mart, and have them price-match Eckerd for $34.99 for you.  Best Buy may or may not do it, since they have the exclusive bonus disc, but who knows.  It's worth a shot.  It's been my experience that Wal-Mart is usually pretty pain-less when it comes to price-matching, too.  I wouldn't think that anyone would give you a problem with price-matching the widescreen version, either.

Fry's: (reportedly) $39.99

*Fry's is an electronics chain in the southwestern states, and I don't have any where I live, so that's all I know.

Costco:  ?

*I don't have any Costcos in my area, either, but apparently they've got some kind of deal going on where if you buy a two-pack of some DVDs, you get a coupon for $10 off the Indy set or something, which would apparently put the Indy set at around $30 or so.  If you've got Costcos where you live, this might be worth checking into--sounds like a decent deal.

Online stores

*After a quick check at DVD Price Search, it looks like the lowest online price for the set right now is right around the $45 mark (this is, of course, not considering any coupons or discounts you may have).

Deep Discount DVD:  $44.29 - free shipping
Best Buy: $44.99 - free shipping
Buy.com: $44.99 - free shipping
Amazon: $45.49 - free shipping

All for now.

All right.  Here's a pic from Paramount's Indiana Jones DVD event held last weekend.  I'm posting this for no reason other than Alison Doody is an absolute fox.   8)

(The woman on the far right is AFI CEO Jean Picker Firstenberg...)

Thanks, Digital Bits!

But, moving on. . .

Added and linked a bunch more titles for early 2004--check 'em out if you want.  The newly announced Planet of the Apes: 35th Anniversary Edition, coming in February, should be a nice release.

More later. . .

All right, kids, the first reviews for The Adventures of Indiana Jones - The Complete DVD Movie Collection are starting to roll in:

The Digital Bits' review

Film Ratings (Raiders/Temple/Crusade): A/B-/A-
Video (Raiders/Temple/Crusade): B+/A-/A-
Audio (for all): A-
Extras: B

The review mentions that this is probably the best these films will ever look, and also notes something which really hasn't gotten too much attention--all of the work that went into cleaning up the individual prints; i.e. fixing scratches, removing dirt, etc.

Also of note are some minor cosmetic corrections that have been made in order to fix some technical goofs that, for whatever reason, weren't corrected when the films were released.  Don't worry--this is nothing along the lines of Lucas raping fixing the original Star Wars trilogy--just minor things like taking out the reflection of the cobra in the glass in between Indy and the snake when he falls into the Well of Souls.  According to the review, another thirteen things were corrected, although I'm betting that most will be so minor that we probably won't even notice.

Anyway, here's another review for it, this time from DVD File:

DVD File's review

Video: 4.5/5
Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5
ROM: 3/5
Value:  4/5

I'll post more on Indy later this week, once the different prices for next week start to roll in.
