Title: What Vintage Do You Still Have From Your Childhood?
Post by: CorranHorn on June 8, 2005, 05:47 AM
As I'm oft to do when a bout of insomnia hits me, I start to think of various stats or records. Well the other night I got to thinking, what vintage toys do I still have from my childhood and I got to realizing I actually have quite a few. That surprised me because I had lost a good chunk of my Star Wars over the years. So I was wondering what toys everyone still has from the fun days of playing with them as kids to today  living it up in their collection? For me, I'm only going back to when I was 12, i.e. 1990 as thats the last year I can recall finding vintage in a retail shop. Well here we go...

* Snaggletooth (not necessarily my first, but certainly my oldest SW toy and one of my faves)
* Sand People (mostly painted in blue at some point when I was a kid, best guess was prior to 84)
* FX-7 (No arms at all)
* Jedi Luke
* Bespin Han
* Bespin Lando
* Chewbacca
* C-3PO
* Biker Scout
* Greedo x2
* Chief Chirpa x2
* Teebo
* Wicket
* Prune Face
* Imperial Dignitary (with coin!)
* Skiff Lando
* Weequay
* Squid Head
* General Madine
* Admiral Ackbar
* Nien Nunb
* Biker Scout
* EV-9D9 (lost the left arm at some point, but then bought a new one a few years back)
* AT-ST Driver
* Snowtrooper
* Rebel Soldier
* POTF Lando coin
* POTF Endor Luke coin
* POTF Stormie Luke coin
* Vehicle Maintenance Energizer (sans tools and hoses)
* Radar Laser Cannon x3
* Desert Sail Skiff x3
* ISP-6
* Rancor
* Darth Vader Carrying Case

That's as much as I can remember. To this day I'm rather bummed I somehow managed to keep the 3 POTF coins but not the figures themselves. Several of the figures came from finding $1 figs in 89 and 90 at an old mom & pop toy shop, the last things I can remember ever finding at retail. Good times, good times... So what about you, what dear toys do you still have?

The only vintage Star Wars figure that I owned (that was bought in a store) was 8D8 (his right arm broke off).  Other than that, I had a Dulok Shaman (his body "exploded" so I had to glue him back together).  :'(
 Every other vintage piece that I own I bought at flea markets in the early-mid '90's.

Ouch!   :'(
I bought somebody's collection for $20 when I was 11 or 12  ;) (That was how I got my Slave I and Anakin figures  ;D)

wow not to have any of the toys from my childhood would be a bit disheartening. if i didnt still have these guys, i wouldnt be collecting today. i'm going to have to pull out some of the more broken pieces and put them on display when i have the room, just to show how i played with them as a kid.

I'm sure many of mine are buried in the garden of my childhood home...I should probably hit up the owners and see if they would let me dig it up.  Many were also destroyed/killed during the Joe wars. ;D

Still from childhood though, I have Leia poncho, my Biker scout (yellowed as can be and still on display), Lando skiff guard, Luke poncho, and Luke jedi.

I made a deal with my brother. I got all the Star Wars toys and my brother got all the Gi Joes and Transformers. We had a decent collection, but not everything. Minus the Blue snaggletooth, we had all figures up to, but not including POTF and about half the ships.

I can see the headlines now... Little ol' lady looses garden to Star Wars archaeological dig.   :D

The single solitary surviving piece from my child hood is a Loose Warok with a yellow torso (but is otherwise in good shape).  He's still got the headdress and arrow pouch from when I was little, but he's missing his original bow.

I'm thinking about allowing that one figure to remain unmint in my set that I'm close to completing, just as a little homage to my childhood.

What a great idea.   8)

I've been lucky to keep every single piece of Star Wars that I had as a kid.

I've got around 60 or 70 figures, as well as a number of ships: X-Wing, Y-Wing, TIE Fighter, AT-AT, AT-ST.  Of course, nearly every ship is missing at least one piece, and a number of figures are now "battle-damaged".  I managed to break the head off my Luke X-Wing Pilot, but managed to keep it to this day.

My one and only figure from back in the day is my Boba Fett. Took him right off the card.  :'(

Heh.  I never owned a single vintage star wars toy until about 2003.  As I've said here many times, I was just at the wrong age and heading out of toys.  At the time my interest would have been waning and the lines I was into at the time were Hot Wheels, vintage GI Joe 12" and some various space toys.  But girls and sports were the flavor of the day at the time.  Beer followed shortly after.

Endor Soldier
B-Wing Pilot
Luke Jedi
Leia Boushh
AT-ST Driver
Lobot
IG-88
Darth Vader
Logray
animated Wicket

I managed to lose most of my favorites like R2, 3PO, Boba Fett, Han trenchcoat, and Chewbacca.
I didn't have any vehicles and only one playset, the Ewok Village, which I still have.

My Star Wars toys weren't as fortunate as my MOTU figures, all of which I still have, most of them with weapons.

All my figures were WELL played with, so not many survived.
I know when I was 12 or so I sold a lot off at a yard sale, 50 cents each.
I remember one older guy buying most of them and the star wars case they
were in.

I still have Luke, 3P0 & R2, first 3 figures I got. They are beat though, but
I keep them for the memories. I have a Obi Wan with dents all over his body
from BBs, I used to put him up as a target (DOH!). I have my Rancor, and
he was hiding a nice treat inside. When I dug him out, something was rattling
around in him, I shook him till a Jawa popped out  ;D

I think before I started picking up new, minty loose figures in hopes of completing a collection (someday), I had most of the figures from my childhood.  They also went through my younger brother, and some things were lost along the way.  I don't think I had any of the weapons, but otherwise they were in somewhat decent shape. Here's what I had in my shoebox when I rescued them from my parents' home:

Obi-Wan Kenobi
Darth Vader
Chewbacca
Boba Fett
Lando Calrissian
R2-D2 w/Sensorscope
Yoda
B-Wing Pilot
Bib Fortuna
Biker Scout
Chief Chirpa
Emperor's Royal Guard
Gamorrean Guard
Han Solo w/Trenchcoat
Lando Skiff Guard
Logray
Luke Skywalker (Jedi)
Lumat
Endor Soldier
Teebo
Wicket
Jabba the Hutt (and playset)

I also had a "hand me down" Falcon and Snowspeeder from my cousin, which he later (understandably) wanted back.  No problem.  I didn't have a real large collection overall, and always wished I could have had more...but when I was using my allowance to buy my figures, its tougher to build it up quickly ;).  I'm also have the majority of my old GI Joes and pretty much all of my MOTU stuff, and weapons with those.  Must have been easier with the larger figures at that time :).

When I was a kid I had all the figures loose minus the POTF as they weren’t available up here, then I got dysfunctional one day and sold them all off for $2 a piece, most were mint since I didn’t play with them after early Empire daze- just opened them and stuck ‘em in the “collector’s” cases. I had a few left that weren’t really super nice shape so I kept them… gave a bunch away to a friend… I think the only remnants of my childhood collection are a Vader, 3-PO, R2, Leia with crayon altered fatigues, and Luke’s disembodied head.

edit: oh yah, and IG-88, sans one arm.

This will be mine, my first Star Wars figure ever - Luke X-Wing Fighter Pilot.  Will I ever "upgrade" him?  Probably.  Will I ever get rid of him?  Never.

And yes, that is sticky-tack holding his head on.   ;)

Close.  It's from the Star Wars - Alien crossover movie where Luke is killed by a chestburster.   ;)

LOL! What did you do to him? I've seen some damage to action figures by kids before, but I've never seen a piece of the chest just torn off like that.

When we was kids we used to take Stormtroopers (which we had plenty of) and stick them between the chain wheel and the chain of our bikes, then we’d rev-up the pedal and the figures would come out looking all elephantitis like… sometimes their chests would break off not unlike that Luke.

I vividly remember blowing up a VINYL CAPED Jawa with a firecracker when I was a kid. :o

Yep, I shoved it right between his legs and BOOOM.

Ahh Yes. to be 5 years old and clueless.

Most of mine. :) I'm missing Han Hoth, Luke Hoth, Leia Hoth, Hoth Trooper (seeing a pattern?) and Leia. I'm thinking this may have been a particularly snowy winter and they may have fallen to the snow banks. ;) The Yoda also isn't mine. I traded mine for some GI Joes and then later acquired my friend's dog chewed naked Yoda for myself.

If anybody hasn't seen this it's a neat section of the Archive: http://www.toysrgus.com/images-nosta/index.html which features a lot of the editor's collections as well as some well-known collector's like Brennan Swain (http://www.robandbrennan.com/), winner of The Amazing Race season 1.

cool, a display of your childhood figures! I got plans on doing that as well, once I can complete a loose set that doesn't include the childhood figures. one day, perhaps...

I've checked out the nostalgia section on the Archive several times, it's really cool to see old pics of kids just ripping open their new presents and playing with the toys the way they're meant to. I know I have a pic or two like that somewhere, one day I'll have to find em.

I still have Weeq.  The figure and weapon were just too boring to open.  I already had a loose one anyway, so he kicked around under my bed for 10+ years.

I still have my entire vintage collection from when I was a kid - except for the damned Sears Cantina and Cloud City cardboard playsets.  :'(  I have no idea what the hell ever happened to those, other than the slim possibility that since they were just cheap cardboard, they got tossed out in the trash after a while (highly unlikely).  Oddly enough, I do still have the Cloud City box, just not the playset.  Complete set of figures (sans Yak), and about 3/4ths of all the ships and playsets.  Still need to catch up on a few of those that I never got as a kid...

But other than those two apparent Sears set casualties (and my BK glass sets, which have since been replaced), everything else was safely stored up in my parent's attic for many, many years.  Aside from my Legos and Hot Wheels, they were the only thing from my youth that didn't get sold off in one of the family garage sales.  When my parents moved out of state about 8 years ago, everything got moved over to my aunt's attic, which coincidentally, I just had to clean out over the past weekend so she could move all my grandma's crap up there.

So now I've got some 20 odd boxes of vintage stuff to go through, all sitting in MY house, for the first time in my adult life.  Looking forward to going through everything again after all these years.  Slightly nervous that I may have left some batteries in a few of the vehicles though.  Fearing some serious yellowing too...  :-\

You know what's funny, is that I was just as meticulous and anal with my collection when I was a kid, as I am now.  Never lost a single accessory, saved every Kenner catalog insert, every opened cardback, every vehicle and playset box (mostly all in mint condition still), etc., etc...  Except for those damned Sears playsets.  I swear to God, I wanna know WTF happened to those.  I bet my mom tossed 'em out at some point thinking they weren't anything important.  Damn, that's been eating at me for about 15 years now, ever since I discovered they appeared to be missing.  I'm praying for a miracle though, and hoping I may find them stashed away inside of one of the other Kenner Star Wars boxes somewhere...

I have one very special shoebox though, that had all my best stuff in it, that I still have to this day.  It's covered in the old '77/78 Topps SW stickers from the trading card packages, and is full of the aforementioned loose cardbacks, Kenner catalogs, and all of the accessories, among other things.  Very meticulously maintained and organized for almost 30 years now...  I don't know why, but it's always been my special little Star Wars treasure chest.  It's the one part of my vintage collection that I've actually kept with me in recent years.  Just random crap in there too, but I love it all.

Ah, nostalgia...  :)

I gotta agree with Jesse, I envy the position you're about to find yourself in Matt. Being able to open all the boxes and seeing all the vintage and the cherished memories rushing back at you, it'll be fun for sure. Make sure to take some pictures and post them for posterity and so the rest of us can live vicariously through you for a few moments.

I may have my whole vintage collection back, but one thing I (still) don't have is a digital camera...  :-[  Yep, I'm a loser like that, unable to assimilate into the new millenium here.  Scary technology, and all that stuff, ya' know...?

But I can take some "regular" pix, and make copies at Costco, and just send them to everyone!  :P

Some day I'll get with the program.  I swear!  ::)

You can take regular pix and have Walmart throw them onto a CD for you, then you can upload them to the web.  ;D Many places are doing that nowadays, I would guess Costco would as well.

Back when the original movies came out. I was at the age when I thought I didn't need to play with toys anymore. Escpecially little plastic jobbers. I was into the old 12" GI Joes.

The only vintage figure I managed to get was a single Yoda which I still have. It looks like the day I bought it since it was never played with.

Of course over the last 8 years with the internet or more specifically eBay. My lone vintage Yoda has spawned a nice vintage collection. I think I was making up for what I missed out on back in the day.

Pretty accurate description of me as well.  13 years old - sports, girls and soon beer took over.  Twas the end of my 12" Joe phase as well.  The last I got was the talking, bearded commander with Kung Fu grip.  Sold it last year for about $175.

Never owned a vintage star wars piece until about 2003.

That was the fate of the majority of models I built.  That was my other love of the time, WWII model building.  I had an absolute fascination with German war machinery and British airplanes.

This weekend I was able to pick up a couple other vintage pieces from my parents' house that were just collecting dust.  The only two vehicles I had as a kid - the Falcon and a Snowspeeder.  Neither of which is in really "mint" condition, as they were originally hand me downs from my older cousins, then to me, then through my brother, and now back to me :).  The snowspeeder is in pretty good shape, although the cable must still be floating around my parents' house somewhere.  The Falcon is a little worse for wear though, and missing a lot (it always was though).  Either way, it brings back those memories, and its nice to have them again.  I still don't have a modern Snowspeeder in my collection (someday hopefully as its one of my favorite vehicles), so the vintage one has gained a spot on the vehicle shelf with the modern vehicles.  It was funny seeing the POTF2 Falcon and vintage one side by side...I hadn't really done that "in person" before, and they basically the exact same ship.  I knew that already, but seeing it in person really drives that home...and reminds me yet again that we need a modern Cloud Car :P.

I still have the shoebox that I kept all the figures in, along with a plastic case for all the guns that didn't lose to the vacuum.  The only items I have displayed in my "collector collection" from my own childhood set is an Xwing and a Battle-Damaged Tie.

I have everything up until the POTF collection. By the time that collection came out, I was in highschool and discovered girls and booze and many other recreational things to throw away my money on.  ;D

Oh and for some reason, I never got the x-wing fighter.

I sold off al of my Vintage Star Wars Toys (along with just about every other toy I owned) about 10 years ago when I needed some scratch for bills/car repairs/etc :(

Any Vintage I have now was aquired through e-bay lots and have become customizing fodder as they really don't stand up, detail-wise, to the newer toys :(

I currently have a TON of Mini-Rigs (several multiples of all except for the stupid steam roller one and the crappy little tank), several Vintage TIES and a TIE Interceptor, 5 or 6 Landspeeders, most of a B-Wing (missing battery cover and wing-tip guns- all easily replicable), an Imperial Troop Transport, 3 mostly complete Deathstars, 3 Falcons (2 complete, 1 missing the gun and radar dish), and a ton of other items that I'm forgetting right now.

I only have about 50 Vintage figures, mostly droids, as I really do not care for the look of the Vintage figures compared to the modern ones.

Hmm off the top of my head, from my childhood I still have:

Figures:
- Darth Vader case with the stickers applied
- Chewbacca
- Boba Fett
- Darth Vader
- Han Solo (big head)
- Hammerhead
- Leia Boush
- Lando Skiff
- C-3PO
- R2-D2
- Cloud Car Pilot
- Nien Numb
- Admiral Ackbar
- IG-88
- Zuckuss (4-Lom)
- Bossk
- Dengar
- Tusken Raider
- Yoda
- Tie Fighter Pilot
- At-At Driver
- Emporer Palpatine
- Bib Fortuna
- Obi-Wan
- Chief Chirpa
- Logray
- 2-1B
- Stormtrooper

Playsets:
- Jabba the hut (w/replacement Salacious and Pipe)

Vehicles:
- Tie Fighter (missing one whole wing)
- X-Wing (missing canopy)

That's all I can recall off the top of my head as I look at the checklists.

Here's what i've aquired as of the past few years:

- 12" Chewbacca MIB
- Chewbacca's Bandolier Strap MIB
- ROTJ Chewbacca MOC
- C-3PO w/detachable limbs & backpack

I'm hoping to eventually get 12back SW, ESB and POTJ Chewaccas MOC to complete my vintage Chewie collection...

I haven't been able to buy a loose Vintage figure in a long time - so just about all of my 60-70 figures were actually my "toys" that I played with when I was a little kid. I respected Star Wars - so all of my figures are in the same condition they were bought. None broken, none lost.

The GI Joes, on the otherhand. I had twice as many Joes as I have Star Wars figures - but I have only recovered a handful.

Star Wars is God.

My SW toys were the only ones my mom wouldn't let me get rid of for some reason. She actually kept them from me, only to be found years later. I'm glad she did be cause every other figure I had was either busted and thrown out or sold...

That's pretty cool actually, how has that experience been? Seeing some of your other posts you appear to be going head first into collecting the vintage picking up anything and everything that interests you. It must be exciting to pickup these toys and really see them for the first time.

It's more than that, it's like opening the door to a brand new EVERYTHING! There's just something so much better (in my opinion) about the vintage figures than the modern ones.  The cardbacks are amazing, just absolutely beautiful!  I can't wait to get my hands on my first carded vintage figure... that's going to be the epitome of the "perfect day"!... I seriously get jittery just thinking about it... I'm thinking it's going to be a Tusken Raider 12-Back style!!!

Unfortunately, when I was about 17 I wanted to buy a guitar so I sold most of my vintage stuff.  I do still have a few items that are in well played with condition.  The elevator from the Death Star was the only piece to survive that set.  I still have the first figure my parents gave me...an R2-D2 (could have even been a 12 back) that has some significant paint wear.  A few of my figures may still be originals that I had as a kid because I think I only sold all the doubles of my figures.  Oh well...now I just have to pay three times as much for everything.

I was recently thinking about this topic again and took the opportunity to snap a shot of all my childhood toys together. It's been ages since they were all together. Many of the figures are in my display case as they're my best conditioned examples for those figures, others are displayed elsewhere.

It was fun to put all of these together, if even momentarily...

The blue stars, headman and Death Star droid prototype are just simple customs as is the Mong Beefhead Tribesman. The unreleased droids & Vlix are castings of the original prototypes.

Damn dude, just...damn. That is like a vintage wet dream right there.

BSG? Buck Rogers? If you have a shelf someplace with the full run of Black Hole or vintage LOTR figures, you are officially the God of Toys.  ;D

Why did they stop producing castings from the DROIDS prototypes? I would buy those in a heart beat. I see those things pop up on eBay from time to time but they are always half-assed customs.

Awesome collection, just awesome. I am rarely impressed by other people's stuff but this is right up my alley.

I'm still looking for black hole and LOTR figures for a decent price. The only one that I found so far is Maximillian.

Most if not all of the prototype Droids castings came from Ryan Shaw (bantha5) many moons ago. Greg Glasgow (glasman6) and I would collect them and make casts for each other. If I could find someone that I could trust to make good casts maybe we can start that up again. I wish I could find the Ewok prototype casts. I saw them on ebay one time and never since.

I want this guy:

The good news is there is a custom prototype Chief Chirpa on ebay right now. The bad news is someone upped the bid to over $100. Damm!  Maybe I should put up my extra Gaff?

There is a Jessica Meade and a poorly painted Governor Koong too.

My mom sold all my ships, but I still have all the figures I had as a kid.  A few have been swapped out for upgrades over the years.  My prized possession from childhood is an R5-D4 where the leg snapped off.  My dad drilled a new hole and popped a screw in the leg, essentially creating a removable leg R5.  I remember my buddies at school raving about how cool it was - really a neat, unique item for a kid when most parents probably would have just tossed it away.

I still have quite a bit of my childhood figures and ships.  Most are well played with condition.  But I have a Darth Vader case and a case full.  A few mini-rigs and ships.  The X-wing is the saddest of the bunch.
