Star Wars Universe / Re: Disney to Purge Select EU
« on: May 7, 2014, 08:46 AM »

I wasn't calling you out... just several of the things I've seen posted elsewhere.  But to me, it sounds like the author is saying they are getting rid of EU for something crappier, which isn't fair.  Now, come Episode VII and it isn't great, then I think it's a legitimate gripe; but to complain about something before it happens, that's where I mean it sounds like the bitter fanboy rant.  So basically she is pre-judging the new trilogy because the EU was declared "Legacy" and not canon by Disney.

But, again, Nick, just because Disney says it isn't so, doesn't mean that you can't think it's so in your SW world.  Trust me, there are things tinkered with in the Original Trilogy Special Editions that aren't canon to me (Greedo shoots first, etc).  I remember complaining about that and having people counter it by saying, "It's Lucas' movies, he can do what he wants."  I guess Disney now has those rights to make those changes, but it doesn't mean they own the memory of the Star Wars I love... I hope that's the way you feel about it as well.

Sometimes this EU debate is worse than some of the political ones in the Sarlacc Pit.  ;D

This pretty much sums up how I feel.  To me it is much like Marvel.  The movies don't jive with 100% of everything that has come before, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy stories, even if they contradict something in a movie series I love.  I still love the Zahn books.  The fact that they aren't part of the official chronology doesn't really matter at all to me.  At some point, the amount of time these characters spend in peril is unrealistic anyway.

That looks like softgoods on Yoda to me...

Is this the first time we have seen that OWK is going to be in Rebels?

We went to the closest Disney Store this past weekend while doing some other shopping.  I purchased my son the Disney Planes Hector Vector die-cast, in the same price range as what the Star Wars die-casts will be...  If the scale on the SW product is close to the scale on this toy...  We will be very pleased.  The box for this thing was around 10 inches square, I believe.

A standard size "car" can fit inside the door you see.  This toy was originally $20, but I got it on clearance for around $13.

My local Five Below had no Joes at all, but they did have the Celebration 4 exclusive McQuarrie  Concept R2-D2 and C-3PO.  $5 each, still in clamshell packaging.

Talbot is played by the guy who played Nathan Petrelli in Heroes.  I knew I recognized him, but couldn't put my finger on it.

This movie was really, REALLY awesome.  If there was one nit to pick, I'd say it would be that with all this crap going down (particularly when the helicarriers take off and start shooting), Stark was conspicuous by his absence.  If this were the comics, there would likely be an asterisk with a note saying "This takes place at the same time as IM3" which would explain it.  They just need to do a tiny bit more in tying in the chronology.

This completely changes the AoS series.  Can't wait to see how they develop that.  The tie-ins there were pretty cool.  Cap and Falcon had good chemistry.

Stephen Strange?  Awesome.

First teaser trailer for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie:

http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/03/27/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-official-trailer

Not a whole lot to see.  It is definitely....different, but I'm trying to reserve judgement for now.  My daughter is so into the turtles now I hope that it is good, but we'll see.  I remember loving the original Turtles movie (and even the second one) when I was a kid, although I'm not sure how well they still hold up.  The current Nick toon is pretty great though.

I have a bad feeling about this...

That movie better be PG or they are completely out of touch with their core TV show audience of 6-10 year olds.
I'm sure there will be plenty of references to testicles with M. Bay's involvement.

1) Cannibals

NOT zombies that eat people.  What a great plot twist that would be.

Don't fall into peer pressure, Rob.  Go buy that $14 figure!  Do it!

Middle ground... I'm going to dump a few bucks into shipping and take one off of Greg's hands.

Now I've got $5 burning a hole in my pocket.
This will help with that $5:

Lost a bet with the wife.  The actress that plays Beth is 28 years old!  Mind.  Blown.  She looks like a teenager.

I also found it silly that they cast Marlon Wayans for the first GI Joe film, and then chose a character that was not African-American for him to portray, as if there was some lack of characters of color in the GI Joe mythos.  These types of things annoy me.  As a child, I had a pretty full set of GI Joe figures, and I didn't segregate Alpine, Roadblock and the rest into the GI Joe version of the Tuskeegee Airmen or anything like that.  They were part of the team.  Still, I'd have been annoyed if they had cast John Cena or Stone Cold as Roadblock.

I say all the time that there are thousands of nerds in this world that these studios could tap to make a quality product without resorting to stunt-casting to get people talking.  And they'd pay these nerds far less than the wonks they pay to go: "Hmm.  Why don't we swap genders on this character?"

The success of these things START with the nerd dollar, and they have plenty of nerds hating on this before one frame of film is shot.

So I think, unless you have some damning statement I haven't seen, you need to give the director the benefit of the doubt.  If you're not comfortable with Johnny being black for some non-racist reason, please share.

Since it sounds like you are calling me a racist, I will say it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with how the characters were created. I would have the same problem if they cast a white guy to play black panther or a white woman for storm. Not accurate to the original comics.
Precisely.  I was called out as a racist on FB this weekend over this topic.  Of course the back-pedaling that happened when I suggested Matt Damon be cast as Black Panther was laughable.

This is a publicity stunt, nothing more.  And a successful one, I might add.
