Title: American Idol Season 6, voter atrocities, and YOU: who's watching?
Post by: Dressel Rebel on March 13, 2007, 06:00 PM
Last week was pretty much an outrage as we saw Jared Cotter, Sundance Head and Sabrina sent home so that the likes of Sanjaya could make the Final 12.  Not that there isn't some kind of uproar every year.  But, out of the final 12, I've gotta say that I really only look forward to Chris Richardson, Chris Sligh, Gina Glocksen, and Brandon Rogers. Blake Lewis a little.

I'll predict at this time that Chris Richardson will win.  The only one that I got right in the past 3 seasons was Carrie Underwood who I called would win in season 4 at the time of the Final 12.  Last year I thought it would be Chris Daughtry.

Here's who's left that I am at all interested in watching perform:

Gina Glocksen

Chris Sligh
(http://www.americanidol.com/media/contestants/season6/t/chris_sligh.jpg)

I am really gonna miss Jared Cotter and Sundance. Alaina Alexander too.

I can't believe Sanjaya made it over them.  The Indian Conspiracy Theory is running rampant.  There are about 360 million Americans and about 1.1 billion Indians.  If in fact they're voting for him strictly on nationality, could it be Sanjaya is the next American Idol?  Yikes.

Dressel, tell me you don't seriously watch that shitbag of a television show.

Please.   :-\

For what it's worth, there is no international Indian conspiracy.  It's probably just because of stuff like this website (http://www.votefortheworst.com/).

(The idiots at work are talking about it.... I swear)   :-*

I love watching people humiliate themselves, quite happily, but after that it's just a lame karaoke show.

I stopped thinking that way when I decided that 90% of those people humiliating themselves are actors being told to go sing like crap because it pulls in big ratings and ideally hooks people for the ****** part of the show too.

My wife loves this show, and because we only have one tv and all that "...in sickness and health" oath junk, I watch it, too. I find it mildly amusing at the beginning, and somewhat entertaining when they choose their own songs during the final 24; however, during the final-12 shows, I usually find myself falling asleep. Last night was no difference, as the theme was Diana Ross. It was utterly boring. Even her upbeat songs were made sluggish. I have watched enough to make a fairly observant guess that either Melinda or Lakisha will be the next Idol. I enjoy their performances the most, with Blake and Sabrina coming in a distant third and fourth.

Voter atrocities?  There's a 2000 election joke to be made in there somewhere, but instead I'll just concur that American Idol is for dipshits.

That joke Ellen made at the Oscars was pretty good... and had American Idol reference, too.

"Jennifer Hudson doesn't get America's votes and doesn't win the nomination on American Idol. Al Gore gets America's votes, but not the nomination." Something like that.... better when Ellen told it.

I gave up on AI just because it's become a popularity contest and not a talent contest. And then most of the people that win that thing are never going to be super-successful anyway.

No I've been able to read that word since the first grade.  My point is that the show has only been around a few years, there have been 5 winners so far.  At least 2 of them, Clarkson and Underwood, have already made millions, as well as having won Grammy's.  Fantasia rose to fame as the winner of the third season of American Idol in 2004 and was nominated for 4 Grammy's for her first album, which sold 240,000 copies in the first week and over 2 million to date.  Taylor Hicks, who just won last year, received a $750,000 deal to write a memoir of his life.

Furthermore, think of your favorite artists.  Not many of them struck it big after their solo release.  In fact, many fans don't even have their favorite band's albums until maybe their 3rd or 4th release, when "the hit" album comes out, and then everyone goes back and buys their early **** that they didn't know about at the time.

Of the 5 winners so far, only Ruben Studdard can be considered not "super successful" like you alleged.  Even though Ruben sold over 2 million records, he's currently engaged in a lawsuit against his godfather who stole hundreds of thousands from him.

So, let's say 4 out of 5 are "super successful" and now very rich.  That's "most".

 ;)

I must preface this by saying I've never watched a single minute of this American Idol.

I gave up on AI just because it's become a popularity contest and not a talent contest.

Isn't that what the majority of the people who watch stuff like that idolize?  Popularity and beauty quite often seem to win out over talent.  Isn't that the sad definition of an "American Idol"?

The show is two things.  The first part is the comedy/trainwreck as the producers fish the talent pool for the worst singers possible so that the judges can humiliate them.  How mighty white of them.  ::)

The rest of the show is a commercial.  It's a commerial for the call-in services that compiles the votes.  AI makes a great deal of money from AT&T just from the text message voting alone.  And after that, it's a commercial for the ensuing tours and CD's.

Has it been commercially successful?  Sure.  Simon Cowell boasts in the upcoming 60 Minutes interview that he did that they've had something in the neighborhood of 100 million albums sold.  But is it anything that's gotten any measure of real critical acclaim?  For the most part, no.  The spectacle that the television show has become overshadows any artistic merit that it *might* have.  They really only have one credible judge on the show, that being Randy Jackson with some serious session and producing credits.  The other two are an egomaniac businessman who knows very little about music and a washed up popstar turned dope fiend.

As for the winners?  Please.  The first one (Clarkson?) had a couple of decent singles, but seems determined to put the show behind her.  I think her biggest hit was written for her by Avril Lavigne.  And that means that she really isn't making the money that most think she would.  Songwriting royalties are where the money lies when it comes to record sales.  The country one (Underwood?) may have won some awards, but anyone who really knows how the country music business works will know that she's just singing those songs.  That's her sole input on those songs.  The business of the country scene is well established where outside songwriters provide all the material, the producers put everything together and then the singer is the final consideration.  Her songs could have just as easily gone to another singer like Faith Hill or Shania Twain.  Most people probably will not remember these singers in about 5 years time.

I can't really be bothered to watch this crap.  It's a slap in the face of serious musicians everywhere.

I will openly admit, I like watching American Idol. Sue me, it's been a guilty pleasure for the last 3 years. This year has some of the best females ever and I can definitely see a female winning it. Doolittle has my vote. Even if she doesn't win, I know she'll go on to be big...

Because of the success of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, the other 3 winners can be considered "failures".  Clarkson didn't hit it big until her 2nd album, and Carrie has outsold all other AI winners.

Fantasia may have sold 2 millions albums (which I find hard to beleive) and been nominated for some Grammy's, too bad no one can name one of her songs.  Her career is now in Broadway, not a singing artist.  Everyone in the media always says, "Whatever happen to her?"  You pointed out the problem with Ruben Studdard.  And the last winner, Taylor Hicks, debut album bombed.  Daughtery and McPhee have had more success than Hicks, and probably always will.

So, change the count to 2 sucessful artists out of 5.  And, in terms of "millionaires", don't count on it.  Simon Cowell and AI are raking in the millions.  The winners are just a front to the entire business known as American Idol.

The business of the country scene is well established where outside songwriters provide all the material, the producers put everything together and then the singer is the final consideration.  Her songs could have just as easily gone to another singer like Faith Hill or Shania Twain.  Most people probably will not remember these singers in about 5 years time.

Shania Twain's career was made with her own music, with most if not all of her songs co-written with her husband, Mutt Lange.  Twain's first album was the typical country music album, with songs not written by her and just another cookie-cutter album.  That is the entire career of Faith Hill.  Faith is the typical country artist: pretty girl with a good voice singing songs from the Country Music songwriting factory.  I'd be surprised if Faith could tell you one musical note.

I understand your statement, but with all due respect, I don't see the "chimp" reference.  To me it appears to make fun of her no-neck, big-face as a child.  The body isn't hairy like a chimp nor is the head shaped like a chimp.

But if you don't find that picture amusing, then how's this one:

I don't watch American Idol past the first couple weeks.  Love the losers in the beginning but hate when they start to get "serious" about it.  This year though I've been enjoying listening to Howard Stern campaigning to get Sanjaya (sp?) in, and getting blamed by news outlets as one of the reasons someone who sucks at the contest is still involved in it.

There's this midget that calls into the show complaining that Howard's ruining idol...  Pretty funny ****.

My thoughts exactly.  I liked Gina Glockson until tonight.  AI is trying to make her the Punk Rock performer, but her version of PAINT IT BLACK just killed me.  I immediately ran to my ipod and heard the original right after her performance.  She should be voted out just for that one performance.  BLEH!

I agree Gina Glocksen sucked and she's in trouble tonight.  Sanjaya needs to be sent home already, I think Jesse is underestimating Howard Stern's influence on this.  He has millions of listeners.  AI receives roughly 30 million votes after the show.  It really wouldn't take much to keep him from going home for a long time.  Can he win in the final?  Probably not, but who knows.

Anyhow, besides Howard Stern being annoying, I thought Blake Lewis and Chris Richardson really did a bang up job last night.  Blake was absolutely stellar.

As for Glocksen, I thought she did just ok which stinks as I really like her. I mean REALLY like her.  ;D

And how damn funny was the girl crying hysterically during Sandvagina? I loved how they kept cutting back to her. CLASSIC! That's the one thing I do like about Idol, the people running it have a sense of humor...

Actually, I think that was after Jordin Sparks' performance.  She sang the song great, but it was just a depressing song.
I think Jordin has a great chance of winning the whole thing.  Her voice is almost as good as Lakisha's and Melinda's, but she's more versatile.  Lakisha and Melinda are noticeably worse when they have to sing songs outside of their comfort zone.  Jordin doesn't have that problem.

I think the performance of the night was given by Ashley the Crying Nerd-Girl.  She was fantastic!

Melinda openly admitted that song she chose last night was totally out of her comfort zone and I think her performace was awesome...

And that crying girl is priceless. I was in tears myself... FROM LAUGHING SO HARD! :P

Sanjaya needs to be sent home already, I think Jesse is underestimating Howard Stern's influence on this.  He has millions of listeners.

His listenership is actually under a million at this point. I am sure some are voting for him becuase of stern, but i wouldn't attribute it all to him. I think alot of young girls are voting for him and i think the Indian / Indian American population are voting for him regardless of what he sounds like. I know i would do the same if some italian kid was in there regardless if he wasn't great. I mean i have voted for girls on the show just becuase i thought they were attractive. With all of that said, he was terrible last night. I didn't see his whole performance, just caught the highlights at the end, but it was terrible.

Yeah ... she was good, but I don't think it was her best performance.  I just don't like her.  She's sweet and all, but she creeps me out when I look at her.

The only reason I'd want to see Sangina stick around is if his sister (and her cleavage) continue to be in the audience to support him.  She's kind of cute.

This has nothing to do with Howard Stern.  Obviously, all the American Idle phone lines are outsourced to India, and Mujibur and Sirajul over there are fudging the results in Sanjaya's favor.

This has nothing to do with Howard Stern.

No Matt it definitely is attributable at least partially to Stern.  He is clearly getting people to vote for Sanjaya that probably don't even watch the show.  If only 30 million votes are cast and spread out among 11 people, you can't underestimate the difference that even 500,000 votes could make if cast for Sanjaya.

Like I said, it got him this far.  But I think if he makes the final 3 or 4 it's not going to work any more.

THE SANJAYA REVOLUTION CONTINUES

Howard started today saying that he stayed up until 10 o’clock last night, just so he could vote for Sanjaya on “American Idol,” although he admitted that for some reason he didn’t think Sanjaya would make the cut this week. Howard then took a call from a man who claimed he voted for Sanjaya 75 times while Howard added his favorite “contestant” yesterday was Sanjaya’s sister, who was sitting in the crowd, and talked about some really hot photographs of her he had seen. Mike Gange then said he voted for Sanjaya about 10 times last night, but wasn’t sure his votes counted because he got through each time without a problem.

Eric the Midget called in and Gary asked him if he sent Ryan Seacrest an e-mail about Howard’s plan to get Sanjaya voted as the next “American Idol.” Although Eric admitted he did send Ryan such a message, he refused to get onto his e-mail account to read it on the air. However, Eric did say the gist of his e-mail was to get Ryan to “combat” Howard, while adding he voted for his favorite “American Idol” contestant, LaKisha, “as many times as he could” during the voting hours last night.

I love this stuff. :)  Being a huge Stern fan this is great to me...  Plus I dislike Idol past the first couple weeks.  When it gets to this point the show is worthless to me, so I really enjoy seeing it completely botched up by a mixture of things that people are actually angry about.

Quote
His listenership is actually under a million at this point.

Evenflow, how do you figure this really?  Granted not everyone with a sub is listening to him, but almost all the subs came with his announcement too so estimates have said it's safe to assume most of them are listening to him.  Sirius had low subscriptions until Stern's announcement which garnered steady sales, including 500,000 new subscriptions just 10 days before Stern was to kick off his show on Sirius.  The Sirius company now has 6 million subscribers, plus talks of a merger with XM Radio too which would basically double the subscriptions of both companies.

I think Stern's got plenty of influence actually to impact this whole thing.  I don't think he influences it solely though, and I think sites like "Vote for the worst" and stuff have had a partial impact.

I'm obviously a big Stern supporter, the show's better than it's ever been in my years of listening.  I'm actually looking forward to tomorrow's show just to hear Eric the Midget call in all pissed off.  There's something about this whole thing I can't stop laughing about.  Eric the Midget sent Ryan Secrest an email "discussing the Stern conspiracy" I guess.  :)  People are simply insane.

I tuned in just long enough to see him not even make it to the bottom couple...  That's funny.

I think between Stern, the site shilling this, and people who actually like that kid (I'm sure there's lots of them despite his suckyness), he's got a little while on there at least.

The reason why i know is becuase ia m in radio and see the competition ratings compared to our own. He may have brought listeners in but it is down right now. With that said, accuracy is always an issue. I don't really buy into it so i could just be talking and not speaking the truth. They are difficult to read but thats what it looked like last time i saw them.

Even, there are no competition ratings for Satelite though, so I don't understand how anything could compare him then.  It's not rated the same way...  There's no data for that and Sirius/XM can't keep track of it.  They basically estimate their personal ratings within their companies by subscription.  Terestrial Radio cannot monitor them and evaluate/compare against individual DJ's...  Or that's been my understanding anyway.

The #'s I was mentioning are from the subscription totals that spiked leading from 2005 into 2006 and then the subscription increases over that year.  The total to come with Stern is set just below the 6 million new subscriptions the company drew in within the past year or so of him signing his deal with them.  Obviously not all those are his audience though, of course, but one could assume the majority are.

Sorry to take this off-topic by the way.  I'm sure it'll right itself quickly.

The story now being reported is that Ashley and her family were part of the studio audience of Fox's other show, "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"  Producers met her there, and invited her to the rehearsals of American Idol.  She "gave" such a crying performance at the rehearsals, she was then given front row seats to the actual live performance show on Tuesday night.  The producers were just waiting for the Great Sanvagina to perform to feature her.  No doubt the producers told Sanvagina to walk by her during his performance.

Local gal Haley Scarnato is one of Yahoo's Most Popular searches.  No doubt due to her outfit on Tuesady night, but hopefully it bodes well for her as the season continues.  Combining her range and her appearance, she may just have a chance versus LaCliche and Big-Face girl.

And to see what everyone is searching for...

As a matter of strategy though, I think she made a big mistake by announcing that she was dedicating a song to her boyfriend and she brought him up a couple other times in other ways.  I think she'd get more votes if she maintained the "available" appearance, not that anyone has a shot with her anyhow, but I just think it hurt her.

Seriously - splitting infinitives like that?  What a shitcock.

I also resent when people call him by his last name, because it's way too cool for him.  Malakar sounds like the name of some badass Asian warrior who stood up colonizing forces with nothing but 300 men, a few spears, and a hell of a lot of determination.

Sangina just sounds like, well, you know.

Other than your comments about Sanjaya and Phil, I completely disagree.  The show was very boring and Blake repeated his performance from last week and practically plagiarized the 311 cover of "Love song" from the 50 First Dates soundtrack.

The local gal, Haley, was also very boring in a week she could have shined with so many bland performances.  I hope Sanjaya or one of the Chris' go home.

I really wan't that surprised that Sligh went home.  He's lost his touch.  I still can't forgie the guy for ruining Pearl Jams Jeremy the other week.  I just wish Phil Stacey and Haley would get voted off, they suck!

Well, Gina, aka a singer better than that Sanjaya, Chris R., Haley, Stacey, and Jordin combined was voted off yesterday. Its amazing how all of these awful singers got through so far this season.

AI has turned into quite the clump of turd of a TV show...not that it wasnt before.  :P

So has he been booted yet ?

We are having a similar thing here with dancing with the stars, they have a gay cowboy on who was on big brother and he sucks big time, i think his highest score is like 5 and the majority of the time he gets a 1 or maybe a 2, but he still gets to stay on, must be lots of gay cowboys here voting him to stay on.
It is funny to watch though , and maybe tv will see that these type of shows can backfire on them if it goes too long.

Did anyone feel their testacles shrivel a little after Sanjaya's performance tonight?  I kept half-expecting him to lock lips with the camera singing, "Kiss me, you fool" in Spanish.

Well, they were engorged after Haley's legs performed.  So I'm not sure if the "frightened turtle" shrinking effect was just the aftermath of all the work they had to do during her performance, or Sanjaya actually hammering them down a bit himself.

By the way, Blake was awesome again.

I felt like I had been violated after that performance. I then had to burn all my clothes and curl up in the fetal position crying while a hot shower ran over me and washed the filth away.  :'(  Sanjaya emotionally raped me...

I skipped watching it this week because I was so disenchanted with all the talent that left in favor of Sanjaya.

I might actually start watching again now.

I was thinking that the voting system is broken.  I thought of some ways they could fix it:

1.  Find a way to allow only 1 vote per phone number.

2.  Let the judges handle it.

3.  Have the live audience in the auditorium vote on a keypad on the arm of their chair, 1 vote per person.  I've seen game shows that do this.

Anyhow, guess I'll give it another shot now.

Are we really sure about the voting system?  Don't you all think we're underestimating the impact of VFTW?  India's got over a billion people, and nothing stops international viewers from voting.  Perhaps they just want to see an Indian-American American Idol.  If he had won though, it would have been the biggest travesty in AI history since Reuben won.

Good.  I couldn't stand Melinda.  I'm not really a huge fan of either Blake or Jordin (this season really sucks), but I think that both are deserving of making the final.  Melinda was the best singer remaining in the competition, but she bored me to tears.

Wait, is he really? I had a theory and my wife thought I was crazy...

I'm actually pissed that Melinda's out. I still think that she is hands down the best female singer they've ever had on the show. The only good thing about her being out early is that she is free to do her own thing and not be stuck under their control for the rest of her career...

I don't think there is anything special or unique about Jordin.  She's a 17 year old high school kid and just looks like a big faker to me.

Blake is special, talented, and unique...gay or not.  I'm pulling for him to win it all.

About Melinda being the best female singer ever above....I gotta go with Carrie Underwood.  This one still gives me goose bumps:
