So Mother Talzin is a generically named Nightsister?
-
I guess so...
-
Although at Yak, they are saying it's based on a nightsister game piece and it's not Talzin (Jayson's awesome with detail, so I trust him). Unfortunately, there aren't any other nightsisters that look like Talzin in the Maul Return episodes. :-\ I guess that means that Hasbro can retool/paint it a bit to be Talzin on a card.
And what is that red flare piece on Maul's saber? I can't tell.
-
If that's Talzin, that's a poor version of her. If that's a generic CW Nightsister... it's funny how you get everything you want and nothing in the same shot. A for effort, D for execution. Wow. Either Maul is coming on the card and this set both, or the carded line is trouble. Thoughts?
-
A good battlepack? Perish the thought.
-
I think it is Talzin and Hasbro didn't want to put the "Mother" on an evil looking action figure - if they did mommies wouldn't buy this pack for the kiddies.
-
And what is that red flare piece on Maul's saber? I can't tell.
My guess is it is same "action feature" pack-in (akin to the lame disk launchers that come with the new Anakin and Ahsoka) that allows the lightsaber to "spin". ::)
-
Why a Target exclusive? It seems like they could sell the *censored* out of this set at mass release?
Looks good...on initial reaction, but...
No normal weapon for Opress. I never got saw the carded release last year.
I see cut elbows on Nightsister.
Maul's articulation will probably disappoint. Too small to make out, but he may not have elbows.
Will this Maul even see a single card release this year? I'm doubting it. I wouldn't hold my breath for a true Talzin figure.
-
Just in time for mother's day. And since it is a battle pack it should be possible to find it eventually.
Great figure selection though. Maybe this explains why shirtless Savage was carried forward instead of armored savage.
Can't wait!

Cyborg Maul is coming to the basic figures collection this year.
-
Wow.
Kind of agree it is simultaneously gratifying and disappointing. The Maul looks good enough, but let's not kid ourselves, that is Mother Talzin, you know it, I know it, Hasbro knows it. Ain't no other Nightsisters look like that. That is some weak sauce. I simply do not get the aversion to naming characters, like Keeli.
I take it that was not something ever hinted out as far as their line-up for Clone Wars this year? Like a bonus to what we already know is coming, which I believe is 1 more Deluxe set and 1 more figure TBA?
Any hints as to when this would be coming out? i hope it does sell like a MF'er and someone at Hasbro realizes, "hey, we can make some money off this line after all", and maybe even decide to make more villains, or gasp, GIRLZ!

Agree on Maul, but I think Nightsister has ball jointed elbows possibly.
-
I'm quite surprised to see this "Talzin" appear in the sub-line, since Hasbro has stated on several occasions that they do not like to make female antagonists. And, like someone already said, this is close enough to Talzin to just piss off some fans of the character. I, for one, would have preferred for Hasbro to make her look exactly as she appeared on the show. But since I never cared for this character anyway, I'm not sweating it too much. Also, I was able to get armored Savage at Target back in November, so I will be getting this pack only for the Maul figure. And if Maul happens to be released on a basic card later in the year, I will feel as though I wasted my money on this set.
So, this Battle Pack is a mixed bag for me.
-

I believe Jayson from Yakface said that Maul would be released on a card.

Some additional thoughts this morning:
1) Why does Maul have a double bladed lightsaber when he clearly sported a single bladed saber in the show?
2) Where is Savage Oppress' lightsaber? Not even Hasbro would be stupid enough to re-issue this figure without his lightsaber, right? RIGHT?
3) I read where the "Nightsister" is based on a composite sketch from the Wizards of the Coast game, or some such nonsense. Huh? Didn't they make their own miniatures? Why are we wasting precious spaces in this line for competing licenses? It would have been EASY to simply drop the braids and saber and call her Mother Talzin.
4) If this is how we are going to get Robot Chicken Maul, WTF are they going to put out for the carded version? There is NO WAY Spider Legs is fitting in a bubble. And those are really the only 2 choices.
I hate to sound like a whiny doosh, because there is a lot to like about this set (2 new figures in a BP!) but it just seems like they went 9/10ths of the way and then fell short of total success with some really silly minor details.
-
Why a Target exclusive?
Red?
-
Overall this set looks pretty good. The only bad part looks to be the weapon choice for Savage. The normal battle axe or a lightsaber would have been a much better inclusion. Aside from that I'm happy with the set, and I can't wait to get it.

Wizards is a subsidiary of Hasbro, and also no longer makes Star Wars miniatures, so there is no risk of "competition".

When is this supposed to be coming out?
I wonder if they have a reset planned for some point this summer and maybe THEN there might be a break in the gridlock that is the Target pegs (wishful thinking).
-
I'm thinking the late summer reset... New Clone Wars, TPM3D out on disc, and stuff like that. I'd be a little surprised if these rolled out in the middle of Summer when nothing is really going on that stores would want to promote.
-
I'm totally buying this. Just some thoughts, especially since Scum has some Hi-Res photos of the set:
- Nightsister is SA - ankles, ball-jointed elbows (not the cut elbows as previously thought), the works
- Where in the HECK is Savage's lightsaber? Hasbro, that's a really, REALLY stupid move...
- Maul has jointed elbows, ankles, and knees, as far as I can discern. From the photos, it looks like he has no torso articulation, and I can't tell if he has wrist articulation, either.
- What the hell is the deal with Maul's lightsaber?
Maul actually looks like the weakest of the set, which is incredibly stupid being that this BP revolves around him, a major, iconic Star Wars character that's been MIA for 12+ years since TPM in '99. The head sculpt doesn't look like the cartoon character, and he seems to be missing articulation in major places. Plus, that crappy lightsaber contraption sure looks wonky. I'm hoping the lightsaber pieces themselves are removable from that round red piece of plastic.
-
thanks for the heads up on the pics - Maul does look bad.
-

Really? I think that Maul looks sweet as hell, and I am getting this Battle Pack just to get him (I already have that Savage figure - with a lightsaber, too).
-
I guess I feel that way since I prefer realisitc over animated, and we already have the SDCC Visionaries Comic pack Maul - which has for more articulation than this one. It is pretty darn close to the looks of the CW version, unless I am missing something.
-

I have the comic pack version, and I think that I prefer this newer one....just because it more closely resembles the character's appearance on the show. I am also pleased to see that this new Maul has quite a bit of articulation. And I am not bummed about the wonky lightsaber thingy, since I have plenty of older sabers that I can use with this figure. And the only thing I am looking forward to with regard to the Nightsister figure is that badass lightsaber that she comes with.
-
So what's the deal, is this thing coming out soon? I gather there have been some kind of developments recently - signage, shelf space clearage, DPCI, etc.
Curious for any details anyone might be able to share...my employer doesn't want me looking at Yakface.com apparently.

Word on the street is that this pack is scheduled to come out in the next couple of weeks. Here is the text from Yakface:
Yakface reader DarthChuckMc writes in with word that Target stores are prepping for the arrival of the Darth Maul Returns Battle Pack within the next week or so. His local store has already allocated shelf space and placed shelf tags. You can check your local store inventory with DPCI: 087-06-1175
If DarthChuckMc reporting here is the same user as Darth_Chuck over at Rebelscum, then this might be some really reliable news, since Darth_Chuck works as a department manager for Target.
-
I was wondering who this Chuck person was...
-
Excellent...thanks for the info. A quick DPCI check of the area Targets via web shows Not In Stock all around, but hopefully that will change soon. I'll need at least two for sure.
-
Chuck Tweeted that out to us and he's usually up on this stuff. :)
-
Have we confirmed a price on this thing yet?
-
Yes, $19.99
-
Thanks Jayson, that is a pleasant surprise.
-
My Target has a shelf tag for this as well - looking forward to this set.
-
A very nice price indeed - I shall pick up this pack without hesitation or balking at the price.
-
I actually found this at our local Target!! It was $19.99 and had six of them. They didn't bother to restock anything else though. We still have two Quigons and a battle droid. I don't think Target stocks figures anymore.
"We have kidnapped R2-D2 and cloned him. We will unleash a huge army of R2 units against the Jedi! Go Forth R2 and Destroy!"

Dang, I was hella excited to come post that I found these this morning but Phruby beat me by a whole day!
My Target had six on the shelves as well, must be that many packed to a case.
I bought two on the spot, but I may look to upgrade the one I am keeping unopened. This new Battle Pack box design is brutal for MOC collectors.
Super looking forward to opening this one tonight though!
-
Cracked mine open. The spinning lightsaber (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcAslQE6X58) deal works well for Maul, thankfully the blades can be removed and joined together for his signature weapon. The real downer of this set is the fact that Savage only includes his axe and not his lightsaber. The nightsister is all kinds of awesome - loaded with articulation and you can remove the feather dressing deal from her back for some variety if you were to get more than one of these figures.
-
Scored one of these this morning. And it was a little tricky to find one set where the paint apps on the faces of all three figures looked solid.
-
After hearing all of the reports (and reading this thread), I drove to my local Target last night with my daughter, and the shelves were just busting out with this set. They were six-deep. I was able to examine each one of them in order to find the best paint apps on Maul. (He's the only one I want from this set. I have no interest in the Night Sister; and I already have Opress). And I was pleasantly surprised to see that this set rang up at $19.99, not at the $22.99 price that was advertised on the shelf.
All in all, it was a good weekend for collecting toys, since my local trading buddy was able to get me the new TRU-exclusive Speeder Bike. So, I have plenty of new stuff to hold me over until the holiday shopping season sets in.
-
I cracked my extra set open last night, probably the last Clone Wars toy I will open this year, although I might consider getting a spare Dropship if they should ever materialize.
Mighella came out well, I guess if you knew the character you would be pleased with the interpretation? It doesn't seem like they put much effort into tweaking her to get closer to the Mother Talzin character. I guess even minor re-tooling costs aren't part of the budget for this line anymore though.
As a figure though, it's a good effort, plenty of articulation compared to the other stuff coming out now. I like that the back feathers are removable, but I still don't see the point of the lightsaber. They should have left that one out and packed in Oppress' instead.
Not at all surprised, but nonetheless disappointed they didn't see fit to tweak Savage even a little, was hoping for the cut horn and amulet, but figured that was a long shot.
Maul came out pretty well too. The legs are a little wonky making it somewhat hard to pose, but they did a good job with the articulation (11 POA) so it's pretty flexible for posing. I really think the figure suffers from a lack of torso/waist articulation though. At least you can display him with the screen accurate half-lightsaber though.
All in all, considering how things are going with this line now, it's a solid effort, good value, and likely as interesting as anything we are going to get going forward, sadly.

LMK if you want to part with that Nightsister. ;)

I do, as well as the Savage. Got a trade list?
-
No, but I have paypal. ;) How does $8 shipped sound?
-
nabbed my set today too ;D
-
Anyone else wanting to ditch the Nightsister, hit me up... She's the only figure I want, though I'd consider Savage too.
-
Found a bunch of these a couple days ago too. I probably spent 15 minutes looking through the 4 sets on the shelf trying to pick the best paint job of the bunch, but I swear, when it comes to tattooed face and chest paint applications, Hasbro sucks. The only one that had Maul's striped centered down his nose correctly, had everything completely off center on the Nightsister and Savage, and vice versa. Annoying. Grabbed the best of the bunch, but will probably keep an eye out for a set with 3 decent paint jobs in the future. As has already been mentioned umpteen times, it's still annoying that Savage doesn't come with his lightsaber from his carded incarnation last year. Could've appeased a lot of collectors by sticking it in there, since very few found him last time 'round.
Still unusual that Hasbro opted to mix in a realistic character with 2 CW figures in the same BP, but that's fine by me as I much prefer the former over animated stuff. Any predictions how long it takes Target to bump the price on this thing up? I say about 3 weeks from now, 'til they figure out it's cheaper (and far better) than the other repacked BPs.
-

You're welcome to my Savage, but I don't think $8 will cover the shipping from VA. PM me if interested and we can discuss terms... :)
-
Picked up this set this morning. Really amazed with the job they did on the Nightsister and Maul.
Maul has 13 pts of articulation and the Nightsister has 14.
I have ZERO insight, but here is what I think happened:
1) Hasbro announced 19 Clone Wars figures for this year - the Maul was supposed to be in that mix
2) Originally the Savage figure in the line was going to be the armored version - there was no need to ship the shirtless version since it got so much coverage in the SotDS line
3) Hasbro had a "Sith Witch" figure in the works, was very far along in her development and was planning on putting her in the Vintage line with the "Expanded Universe" logo.
For whatever reason, the Sith Witch figure was bounced from Vintage - maybe in favor of another female action figure - like Shae Vizla and the Witch was left without a home.
So instead of just not releasing her and losing the investment put into her development, they swapped out the Savage in the main Clone Wars line, dropped the number of figures down to 18 and put all three figures together as a Battle Pack which they then shopped around as an exclusive.
Again, that's just my own personal speculation, but whatever the reason, I'm glad they did it - the Nightsister/Sith Witch figure being TVC quality makes this set a real hit.
-
Maul only has 11 POA

You're right - my bad - I thought he had articulated wrists.

I'd only be interested in it with the Nightsister too... thus the "I'd consider Savage too" remark. ;)

Picked up a set today. There were four on the shelf and all had somewhat decent paintjobs, but I still spent a few minutes looking for the best one.
-
Does anyone know Hasbro's own official explanation on how come the Nightsister isn't Mother Talzin?
-
Does anyone know Hasbro's own official explanation on how come the Nightsister isn't Mother Talzin?
I don't think any "official" explanation was ever given, nor for that matter, do I think they were ever asked.
I'm not sure it matters, because we can't really count on them providing an honest answer anyway. My take is that this was just an already sculpted Mighella figure from the canceled comic pack they had lying around and was close enough to Mother Talzin that it could qualify as a "generic nightsister".
I agree with Pete that Maul was likely the 19th carded figure for this year but they must have needed some kind of exclusive timed roughly around the season premier, so they threw together this thing.
As far as why they don't name figures specifically as they appear in the show, that is probably some kind of marketing/LFL voodoo that only makes sense to them. This is why we get two stealth clone troopers and no Commander Blackout. Or a generic ARF Trooper but no Comm. Keeli. ::)
-
Picked this up today at Target, no DCPI needed, was already on the shelf.
-
The gem in this set is definitely the Nightsister figure. Just plain awesome.
-
This is on sale per Target's ad for $18 this week
-
Anyone interested in perhaps Maul and Oppress?
I bought the set, while on sale, thinking I'd ponder selling some of the contents so I can keep the Nightsister. I don't really want the animated figures... I could dig Oppress, but Maul I'm happy with the realistic one and don't want this one (he has cooler legs though IMO).
Drop me a PM if you're interested in them, otherwise I think I'm taking the set back.
-
Finally opened up one of these today and I'm shocked at what I like most about this set... which is...
Savage Opress :-X I never got the original, so I gave Maul's lightsaber to Savage and gave the Nightsister saber to Maul. Totally love the set now! I was really shocked that I gave more attention to Savage than the other figures - and I'll explain why.
Nightsister is very well-executed for a generic Nightsister, it's a definite hit. Not anything extraordinary or overtly cool (I kinda want a Talzin now that I think about it, but I'll pretend this is her), but very well done.
NOW for the elephant in the room (seriously, Maul is a giant compared to Savage, which really surprised me).
I'm so disappointed with the Maul figure. :-\ I really wanted to like this figure, and I had such high expectations! But seriously, not giving an articulated waist or wrists to an otherwise almost-perfectly articulated figure is so downright distracting! It's the fact that it's just almost there that distracts me - granted, I'm grateful Hasbro went all-out with his legs, but it's so hard to achieve any cool poses with the missing points. And I really don't like the headsculpt either, I don't think it looks much like Maul from the cartoon. Being that the Maul figure looks downright goofy and the Nightsister is just alright, I loved the Savage most of all right off the bat.
A+++ for concept.
B- for execution. Granted though, this is a very nice set with much value, but, as a collector item (as in for a collector who expects TVC standards from everything, unfortunately) it's just okay.
-
Got this for $10 last weekend, and will be returning the last one I bought.
$10 feels about right on this. I'm glad I waited because I only really wanted one figure, and I'll probably put Oppress over on my desk of shame. Maul, not sure what to do there. His lower legs are better than the realistic figure's are. I'd like to combine them.
-
if it goes lower than $10, and I expect it will if they linger, i am in for a couple more. Would like to customize a csreen accurate Oppress with missing arm, cut horn, etc.
-
Oh yes, I finally found a Target today that had moved this to 70%, so I snagged the only one they had left for $5.98. :) I am hoping the others follow suit this week because I know at least one location that still had 15-20 left gathering dust.
