Title: What kind of car would you buy if.....
Post by: Morgbug on October 24, 2004, 12:09 AM
you could spend up to $100,000 and you had to drive the car every day?   You have to pay for the insurance and the gas, etc.

I went and saw Taxi tonight and really thought the BMW 760 looked pretty sharp.  Not sure of the price, I haven't looked yet.

I'll have to do some digging for other vehicles, but at the moment I really want an Infiniti G35 two door.  My kids big enough she can crawl into the back through a single door.  All wheel drive, decent economy for the engine, looks pretty sharp.  I'm sure I'll stumble on a more expensive car for fantasy purposes, but right now that one sticks in my mind.   How about you?

I'd have two cars.
One, a Jeep Wrangler.

Two, a BMW 330 Ci
(http://www.bmw.com/generic/com/en/products/automobiles/showroom/3series/sedan/_img/introduction_front.jpg)

Since these are only going for about $75,000, I'd get one of these, if the insurance wouldn't kill me.

Up to $100,000!  Heck, I could have a nice small car & a good down payment on a house! I would love to have my Honda Civic back.  :'(

BTW, is that US or CDN?  :P

hmmm  my ideal car is actually a Corvette ZR1. The 1991 version was a 25th anniversary edition I believe of the Stingray/ZR1 design and was I think the last year of the ZR1 design, so that's what I would go with. Cherry red convertible of course :)

Chrysler Sebring Convertible.

Economical gas mileage, sporty looks, speed/power without an outrageously costly engine, reliable in every way, dependable in winter conditions/bad roads, and of course a lovely convertible.  Pain in the ass to maintain the tops, but worth it IMO.

Now...  If we still have the leftover cash, I'm gonna nab a Corvette Stingray too...  79'll do.  Or a restored 59 Thunderbird convertible.  That's a classy weekend ride.

Infinity G35

or

Nissan 350z
(http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_reports/images/350roadster1.JPG)

They're more or less the same thing so I'd have to test drive to decide...but I could save tens of thousands of that 100,000 and get the car that I want and get it fully loaded.

Right now, the cost is just under a cool mil.

$100K?  Well, the Volkswagon Touareg was cool, and clocks in under $50K.

And then there's the 2005 Mustang that's coming out.  It's kind of a throwback to the Mustang Fastback.  It comes in under $30K.

So if the limit is $100K, those are the cars I'd choose.

Interesting to see all the choices and for the most part practical.  I can't remember where all of you live, but if I selected the Z, it wouldn't be in the realm of practical for about 5 months a year.

Alrighty then, let's change it up and get depressing, under $30,000.

Nick's still good with his 'Stang.  Smileyfaceguy (welcome back) can likely pull a Jeep in under that amount.  I'm SOL with the G35, so I'm either an Accord Coupe or an Altima SL.  Neither says daddy near as much as a Camry :-*

Sticking with the Chrysler Sebring Conv...

Being a car you have to drive all the time, and all that jazz, that's why I went with it in the first place.  Comfy, practical, reliable...  Lot of the choices would be less than practical come crunch time and your car needs any level of work...  Especially the Euro fans.

While Smileyfaceguy is always a welcomed man, I disagree on jeeps...  2 of my friends have them.  They're some of the WORST rides I've ever been in, as far as comfort goes.  Bumpy, rigid suspensions don't make for comfort, but they're highly reliable vehicles that really perform above and beyond many 4x4's (even when stock) in bad weather.  Front wheel drive cars perform for what I need though, since I don't do off-roading, so that's my aim there.

Nick's choice of the new Mustang was borderline a choice for me...  Since no release yet, and nothing to really compare it to, I was hesitant.  I like its looks though.  It's a really incredible car though, from looks and its supposed features.  Dunno about traveling on bad roads in it, especially if it's RWD, though I don't know if it's RWD or not.  I'd just assume it is.

For me, it would have to be a 2002 Dodge Viper RT/10 followed closely by the GTS, and then the new SRT-10. Any one of the three would be just fine with me. I'd prefer the RT/10 because a convertible in Seattle is a bad idea. I could put the targa hardtop on it and drive it during the 7 or 8 months of the year where it's raining here.

However, that is my dream car that I can't afford. Oddly enough, the dream car I had before this was the Turbo Beetle, and now I own that. I DO drive it every day and I still like it as much as I did the first year I owned it.  It's a great little commuter car, gets great gas mileage....and it's quite zippy.

Mine looks like this without the dumb aftermarket spoiler (which is stupid because the car has a built in spoiler that pops up when you hit about 100)

Well I love my new car (an 04 corolla) worked my butt off this summer to pay it off.

But if I had the money, I would rebuild my old car. (a 92 Dodge Spirit)
I would just upgrade its internal mechanisms to be in pristine working condition, new tires, clean the inside a bit, add a CD player, and jsut beef it up. But I would keep its outward dented, stickered, painted up, scratched appearence as is.
My car was a Battle Wagon in its time

My new Car is a Decepticon though. haha. I put a huge logo on it's hood. I love it.

What a coincidence. My Bug is ALSO a decepticon. It was going to be an Autobot, but I didn't get the yellow one....so I decided mine was evil and put the sticker on the rear window.

My license plate says Transformer and the little holder says "More than meets the eye".  ;D

Oh. :-X

Anyway, if we're going under $30,000, I'd stick with the Wrangler. The ride can't be nearly as bad as my old CJ-7, which was beat to hell. I could only put it in 4 low, and then I could only go about 25 mph. Which is all the faster I needed to go on a ****** day.

There's one of these at the local Ford dealership. They wouldn't even let me read the sticker. I'll bet it goes for $200,000. Which is more than its MSRP of $150 large.

Choice #1 - $100,00 category - Dodge SRT10 - $72,300 CDN
V10 Viper Engine - 500 HP - Incredible good looks, and even available in a Quad Cab to carry the booster seat in the back.  Gotta be somewhat practical, right?  ;)  I've always been a GM guy at heart, but this Dodge is just too purdy.

Choice #2 - $30,000 category - 1970 Olds 442
Ultimately it would need to be a convertible.  455 Big Block, enough torque to melt the tires in a few seconds.  Some day this will be parked in my garage, but until then, I'll just have to enjoy the scenes in Demolition Man.  Obviously this isn't a new car, but I should still find my dream car for about $30K, hopefully.   :o

De Lorean DMC-12.

"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads." ;) (http://cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/frech/a048.gif)

According to Wikipedia "As of 2005, one can buy a fully restored De Lorean DMC-12 for US$37,500, while unrestored but good condition vehicles run from about US$15,000 upwards." Thus putting one of these not totally out of the ballpark of reality ... someday.

I've actually seen two of those in my life on the road.  One in Arizona and one up here in MN.  It totally messes with your mind if you ever do see it.

I've also heard that De Loreans are pretty crappy cars.  Mainly because the Stainless Steel they used was so heavy that they wear out rather quickly.

COol choice though Nathan

Here's what I'd buy

First choice would be a 1957 GMC Suburban. However, I'd take whatever money left from the $100K to update the engine to something a little more fuel efficient. Blasphemous, I know, but I can't justify poor gas mileage.

Second choice would be a 60s-era VW beetle. Again, I'd update the engine.  :P

We passed a Delorean on the interstate on the way home from vacation in Florida last week.  I was on the phone with my real estate agent and immediately stopped in midsentence and said "Oh my God, we just passed a Delorean!"

Trippy.

I can remember in early college a Hummer being parked outside the movie theater where I worked and all of us sneaking out to the parking lot during the show to look it over.  This was in 92 or 93 when spotting a Hummer out running around was rare indeed.  I used to love them, then the H2 and now H3 killed the magic.

Chevy revealed the 2009 Camaro earlier this year.

This is the sexiest car Chevrolet will have released in over 30 years.  Add the 400HP LS2 V8 and you've got both show and go - this is a daily commuter I'd love to have a shot at.  Better start saving now!

It's pushed back to '09?

I thought GM was releasing it in 2007?

In the end, it doesn't matter - too impractical (and pricey) for me.

Title: Re: What kind of car would you buy if.....
Post by: JesseVader08 on April 18, 2006, 03:43 PM
The last thing I read about it was in Car and Driver, at that time they claimed it was 2009.

I can totally understand the non-practicality of the Camaro.  I think that's why I was so bloody excited when they made the Charger as a 4-door.  Of course, purists were disgusted by that, and I probably would have been too if I didn't have to worry about putting children in the back seat.  2-doors just do NOT work for us anymore.  But Daddy still needs to have fun though, right?  ;)  So 4 doors and Hemi in a sexy body works for me.

As for the price, hopefully they'll be smart and price it competitively with the Mustang instead of being $10,000 more (like it was during it's dying days of the early '90s).

BTW, congrats on the news of your next child on the way.  8)

That 09 Camaro looks pretty spiffy, and very nice ride there Jayson.  I had a black camaro in high school, and then traded it in to get a front wheel drive car when I went to college (for those Nebraska winters).  I sort of regret it from time to time now though, that was a fun car to drive around.

As a proud Camaro owner.. I love the "retro" look of the '09, but I think if I bought a muscle car again, I buy and original from the 60s. At least I'd be able to work on and modify it myself.

My baby...

Sweet ride jedijaybird.  Even though I'm a Mustang guy myself, I've always liked the LT1'/LS1's, especially the '99-'02? SS Camaro.

They also turn out some really good 1/4 mile times for bone stock.  The best my feeble skills could manage in my '98 Cobra missing 2nd gear twice is a 13.62.

Now that is sweet too!  Is that the new GTO or Charger?  It's all about Domestic Muscle. ;D

The Camaro and Challenger are a real return to their heritage.  On the other hand, the GTO is a car that Pontiac has really come up short on.  Granted, the 400HP V8 will be a lot of fun in the small body, but it looks too much like the G6, their baseline vehicle.

Nice ride, but with current (and future) gas prices, I wonder how well these will sell.

But I'm sure they'll be aimed at folks that are my parent's age, who have more than enough cash for gas.

I've always been a fan of smaller coupes and roadsters, and my last two cars have both been BMW Z3's. When the Z4 hit, I hated it. I hated the lines, I hated the marketing mentality that spawned it, and I was frustrated that the bulletproof platform underneath was spoiled by such shoddy looks. Then along came the coupe images earlier this year:

And all of a sudden, I love it.  It has a vintage euro coupe feel that reminds me of early Aston Martins. Plus, the M build that hits in late May looks on paper to best the Cayman S. I'm going to go one more year on my current car and then start to seriously consider the M. Yum.

It still is Jesse!  The only way I'd buy a car like this would be if I won the Lotto or something!

Or this:

Toyota Yaris.  No hybrid technology, but it still gets 40 MPG.

SRP is only $12K to boot.
