Post by: JesseVader08 on February 18, 2006, 09:33 AM
According to the latest e-mail from Entertainment Earth (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/aff-home.asp?id=JE-405087801), their next exclusive is due to be released on Feb 28th at 12PM (noon) Pacific Time.  The unnamed editor is claiming it will be "quite limited", but there's no mention of what it actually is.

Okay. ??? Do we know if it's even a 3 3/4" item?

'quite limited'   ::)

Who believes this? Define quite limited. What like 50000-100000? Well, I don't consider that quite limited, but if it 30000 or less and they charge 20$ and it's a 3 and 3/4" fig then I'd go with quite limited.

I just don't see EE distributing/selling anything 'quite limited'
(in my definition of it) unless they raised the price quite a bit.

Come on EE, surprise me.. make it an ARC with the quad shoulder mount cannon.( although I agree it will be Kanos)

Personally, I hope it does suck (at least choice-wise).  I hate it when cool figures are wasted as expensive, harder to find figures (Wedge Antilles).  Make it a POTF2 Greedo repaint and I'll be a happy camper  :P
Granted, I'm not a completist and I mostly open my figures, so passing on overpriced exclusives is pretty easy.

I assume it will be Kir Kanos too, but since these figures are usually straight repaints, how will Kir Kanos work out? Will they take a ROTS #23 Royal Guard, tweak his robes and give him a different paint scheme underneath?  Removable helmet? New weapon? None of these?
Title: Re: EE's Next Exclusive...

I bet it's something like a BARC trooper or Galactic Marine.

Actually, if that were the case if they were in 4-pks, that could be ok... if they are new sculpts being used, or some really good kitbashing.  I could see them doing repainted Scout Troopers for BARCs or repainted Snowtroopers for Galactic Marines... don't know how crazy I am about them being simple repaints though.

But haven't EE's exclusives basically been repaints anyway so far?  We've gotten the Clone 4-pk (basically rehashed repaints) and the Droids (just repaints).

Ooooooooooooooohhh, you guys really got me with that one!  Zing! Man, I'm really feeling it. I mean it, you guys...wow. You sure got me. What a zinger. I'll be smarting from that one for days. What a burn. Whoah, nelly. Is my face red.  I mean it, I'm really just speechless. Golly. I've been served. That's really good. You guys are funny! I mean...wow. Really sharp. You guys must have writers. Oof. Really hits close to home, ya know? And the bolding of the word "ass" in embarrassed...SHEER GENIUS! A lot of people think of Lenny Bruce as a trailblazer in comedy and wit, but that really takes the cake. I am sitting here, literally stunned. Really, I've been shaken to my very core. It takes an especially cutting comeback to make us stare deep into the twisted miasma of our own soul, and let me assure you...I was just on the receiving end of just such a witticism. Ooh, how it stings!

I posted because I enjoy pointing out the inane. And, because I thought the Adam Pawlus/Stormtrooper post was pretty damn funny.

By the way, just to clarify before you guys take any more offense, Pawlus was the one I was referring to as a tool, not JesseVader.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go try to recover from your stinging rebuke. It'll be hard, but I only hope I can persevere. I also wouldn't want to take time away from any "shill time" EE may have purchased.  ;)

I was? Didn't know that. Alrighty then.

Let's get back on topic. Most likely it'll be the Kir Kanos. But I think it would be nice if they did a Crimson Empire 2 pack with Carnor Jax.
Title: Re: EE's Next Exclusive...
Post by: Darth Delicious on February 19, 2006, 02:24 AM
That would be nice. I have to wonder though...would EE be willing (or saavy enough to the EU) to do a character with a minor following at best?

It seems more likely they'd do a clone repaint, or maybe a Republic Commando repaint.

It would be really cool if they finished out the Republic Commandos. Maybe a 3 pack?

I'd rather see these released to retail on single cards than as an EE exclusive, but it would be nice to get the rest of the squad.

My money on a Vintage Style figure.  Vintage Figures are going to be hot because of the UGH crap and Collectors are going to want all of the vintage style figures. So EE will make a crap load of money on this.  This is just my two cents.

I'm going to say it's a bust.
Title: Re: EE's Next Exclusive...
Post by: Darth Delicious on February 20, 2006, 03:21 AM
I'd say that the REAL mystery isn't what the exclusive will be...the REAL mystery is who the "unnamed editor" leaking the news could be!  Whoever it is, I'm sure he's credible...both as an EE source and a totally, unbiased "reporter" for another fansite.  ::)

It's transparent shilling at it's finest, but I like to speculate, so I'll play the game.

On the figure front, we know it's not going to be a figure that requires tooling...that's far too expensive, and EE is not a company with pockets that deep. So that leaves us with a repaint, which makes a clone or commando a possibility. I can't really see the big "H" giving EE a member of Delta Squad...too much money to be made on the retail front with those, I think. An all-white commando though...that would be cool. Kir Kanos seems possible, but unlikely. Most Star Wars fans have never even heard of him.

Whoever it is, I'm sure most of the ideas we come up with here will be better than what we actually get.

Of course, the price includes a heavy duty clamshell and white mail order box... ::)

I must have missed the RS info too because I hadn't heard that (or at least forgot it if I did hear it previously).

Here's the RS nugget (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/actionfigure/the_411_2006_exclusives_95574.asp) for reference:

"There will be a pile of collector oriented online and convention exclusives that I would get in trouble for talking about, so I won’t tell you that there is a new George Lucas action figure in the works or that a large e-tailer has got a very popular eEU Kiracter coming out soon. (Man, is my spell check broke? I think so, but I kanos say for sure…) I also won’t tell you that there will be any other convention exclusive cloning around this summer…"

I guess I can see how Kir Kanos can be done since it would essentially be a re-hash of the RotS #23 Royal Guard figure on a single card.  Maybe a new head w/Helmet and that's all it would take.

And just for the record, Pawlus plays it very smug and clever in his posts, but if you've ever met the guy, he is a personality vacuum. I'd wager that in High School, he was on the receiving end of MANY wedgies, atomic wedgies, and the dreaded rear admiral.   ;D

I'm with the majority in assuming this is Kir Kanos since that's been the strong rumor and they have the sculpt handy dandy.  They just need to give him a proper weapon really.

no huge deal, nothing to go giddy over, and nothing a customizer probably couldn't have done a better job on I'll wager.  Oh well.   :-\

I'll be surprised if it's something else, and if it comes in at a reasonable price (by my sense of reasonable anyway since some people seem to think it's ok to tell everyone that $10 is a reasonable price to pay for the current level of quality we get...  I, however, humbly disagree with that nonsense).

Hmmm....  the plot thickens:

From YodasNews (http://www.yodasnews.com):

Gentle Giant Exclusive Anakin Mini Bust
Our Bothan Spy reports in that at the end of this month, there will be an Entertainment Earth Gentle Giant Exclusive coming out for pre-order, on or around 2/28/06. It's going to be a Revenge Of The Sith Vader bust with Anakin's crispy head. It will be limited to 5,000 pieces, and will be selling for $49.99 only on Entertainment Earth's site. As usual, our spy reports could change, but so far they are 5-for-5!

If it turns out to be an Exclusive GG Anakin Mini-Bust, I couldn't care less about it.

If it turns out to be an Exclusive Habsro 3.75" Kir Kanos/Crimson Empire set from Hasbro, then I'm in.

I just find it interesting that everyone figured R-scum's Kir Kanos hint was right, but then over the last two days these GG Crispy Anakin Bust rumors started popping up.  Hmmm, it will be interesting to see who turns out to be right...

Probably the GG is correct. I think since we saw that list on RS we assumed that the Kir Kanos was the EE exclusive -but, considering how often RS is wrong it really wouldn't surprise me if it's the GG exclusive..which if it were true I'd definately PASS. GG and other non-Hasbro companies' lines are just too damned expensive for me to get into. Not only that but.. I don't wanna ugly ass KFC anni in my collection room ::).

I guess we'll find out soon enough :P

Yeah that may be true but, you'll have to pay outrageous shipping and Lord Anton won't because it's a short drive from his house. You take that shipping cost off and I think He gets it cheaper (total cost is less);)

If it does remain true that it stays an EE exclusive then you won't be able to get it from another etailer. If you're in LA why not get it from EE(pick it up yourself)?

Still, if you live near EE then it makes sense...but you'd still probably need to call first and order them, as EE is pretty much a stickler for orders going through the proper channels.

lotsa folks got Astromech sets at cheaper prices from other etailers, then paid the shipping ::)

I wonder if it will be a 'strictly EE' exclusive this time. If so folks won't be able to buy it at the other etailers then.

Well....I couldn't see other etailers buying the exclusives off EE then selling them for cheaper still, hence losing money.
Title: Re: EE's Next Exclusive...
Post by: Morgbug on February 22, 2006, 11:25 PM
Bust makes a lot more sense for EE than a single carded figure.  Fixed profit margin is there at $49.99 and 5000 units is a decent size.  If other retailers can offload Sandtrooper busts on preorder for $39.99 you know their cost per item is lower than that.

A single carded figure exclusive for EE?

Well, like I said...I got the set for $10 cheaper, and got flat rate shipping that cost less than it would have cost me in EE shipping or in gas to drive there, so yeah, there's other E-tailers that are cheaper than EE, even on their own exclusive.

Title: Re: EE's Next Exclusive...
Post by: Jeff on February 23, 2006, 09:08 AM
The reason that other e-tailers can get EE's own exclusives cheaper than EE is due to EE's wholesaler area.

Many people don't know that EE offers a wholesale part to the business:
http://www.entertainmentearth.com/eedistribution.asp

So, places like BBTS or other on-line shops (or anyone with a wholesale tax ID) can buy things like the Astromechs with a wholesale discount from EE and then they can re-offer them on their own sites (usually cheaper since they are passing some of that wholesale saving on to you as an incentive to buy from them).

Just an FYI for all those who didn't know about that little fact...

I think it was extremely saavy marketing to leak word of an exclusive early to build "buzz," and let the fans speculate. That guarantees the fans will think of such cool possibilities that your actual product will never be able to measure up, and once it's unveiled will go "Oh, it's that? Who cares?"

Exactly what happened here. Yep, that's clever marketing indeed.

So you did get your lunch money stolen on a daily basis?

Maybe we SW fans are "whiny, demanding, and perpetually unimpressed" because we are spending our hard earned money on something that isn't that hard to get right, yet Hasbro repeatedly screws it up. I don't think it is too much to ask to get some quality in what we are buying.

Hey, think whatever you like. I think it's ridiculous that you have to stoop to lame personal insults against some guy you don't even know, saying "MAN I BET THIS GUY WAS A NERD IN HIGH SCHOOL LAFFO!" just to criticize the company. I mean, there's some pretty mean-spirited crap in here about this guy.

You have serious complaints to lodge against the company and whatever it's doing, fine, but I find it hard to believe that the mod staff here is cool with someone bashing some employee with tasteless personal insults just because you're not happy with whatever Star Wars toys you're buying this week.

I mean, I don't walk down to the McDonald's and call you a zit-faced virgin loser because the burger you served me tastes like cardboard, do I?

I'd order it from another online retailer, as they always have it cheaper than EE.

-DD

Actually, this one won't be.   Entertainment Earth sells pretty much 99.99% of its products both direct to consumers and also by wholesale, so any comic store, web store, or anyone who wants to can buy items wholesale from us and then offer them to the world at a price of their choosing.

This particular item is not going to be available wholesale through EE Distribution, so it will be $49.99 through Entertainment Earth starting tomorrow.  (We're also going to have it in a few bundles.)   There's also a $10 off coupon in our next catalog if you order $75 or more, which, if you also get a bundle, is a pretty spectacular deal if you like busts.   (And if you don't, well, obviously more for the rest of us.)

It's been a little... surreal to see you guys talking about me at length here these many months, especially given I don't think I've met more than a couple of you.  But hey, we all dish it out, it's not like I can't take it.   (And as far as high school goes, well, seeing as I've been writing about toys online since then, yes, it's pretty obvious what I was doing in those days.  But, thanks for speculating.   I wasn't aware people still gave wedgies past grade school.)

So anyway, thanks for the comments, it's nice to see someone doing part of my job for me as a marketing guy.   It's also great to hear what some of you have had to say as not every person I hear from gives frank, honest opinions about their opinions of things (although most of them do).   I typically try to keep my interaction with forums as merely reading what you guys have to say-- as you guys, Rebelscum, Galactic Hunter, Sir Steve's, and everyone else have a lot to say-- but, sometimes, it makes sense to say "hello."

"Hello," by the way.

Your Napoleon Dynamite-lookalike pal,

I think it's ridiculous that you have to stoop to lame personal insults against some guy you don't even know,

I mean, I don't walk down to the McDonald's and call you a zit-faced virgin loser because the burger you served me tastes like cardboard, do I?

You're hilarious.

I think it's more likely that the guy has been paid to deal with whiny, demanding, perpetually unimpressed Star Wars fans for so long that he just couldn't fake giving a **** about whatever garbage you were prattling on about.

Well..nice start here!

then..
I think it's ridiculous that you have to stoop to lame personal insults against some guy you don't even know

Is it hypocrisy in effect here :P?

I don't even know this Adam Pawlus guy nor have read any negative comments about him until today(here) :-\.
Well..it's been entertaining then ::)

So anyway, does anyone know if there is a removeable helmet to this piece? If there is my interest level will go way up.

It's shocking to find myself on the same side as Darth_Slothus for a change instead of battling it out.

Your attempt at a "shot" with the McDonalds bit was pretty weak, VaderLOL...I'd be more than willing to compare income tax statements with you any day of the week. I don't consider myself a rich man by any means, but certainly I can top your job cleaning the glass in the nudie booths at Melonshakers.  ;D

Well at least he spelled belligerent correctly 50 % of the time.

I for one think this is a pretty cool exclusive, I just wish I could use those d*** Mastercard "galaxy reward points". I keep waiting for MBNA to get a new exclusive- I guess when they do I'll grab a couple at that point.

So, to get back to topic- does it come with a helmet?

And I'm an AP fan, for the record. Have been for years. I don't have to agree with everything someone says in order to value their opinion.

Hopefully, we'll know in about 20 minutes.  My guess is it won't include the helmet, but I'd like to be wrong - it would be a great accessory.

Sorry, JesseVader. I don't take anything personally on here, it's all in good fun...but sometimes I just can't resist the little devil on my shoulder that spurs me on to stir the pot.  ;D

For the record, while I'm not excited about this bust at all, if it came with a helmet that WOULD make it more appealing. Still, with such a limited run I think EE will probably do okay even without the helmet.

It's now up for preorder (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/aff-home.asp?id=JE-405087801&number=GE8969), but there's no mention of the helmet being included, just the lightsaber being removable.

"An Entertainment Earth Exclusive! Gentle Giant Star Wars Exclusive Darth Vader Anakin Reveal Mini Bust. Limited to 5 per person.
Standing nearly 6-inches tall, this replica is an authentic recreation of Darth Vader and his scarred, battered face as seen in Revenge of the Sith. Based on on-set 3D scanning and the talents of Gentle Giant Studio's artisans, you can see, for the first time ever, this collectible recreation of the scarred remains of Anakin Skywalker inside the suit of Darth Vader. Limited edition of only 5,000 pieces, this item is exclusive to Entertainment Earth and packaged in an attractive 4-color window package.

As an added bonus, the blade of the lightsaber is removable, so it's up to you if you want to display him with his lightsaber ignited, or turned off so you can get a better view at the scarred remains of Anakin Skywalker!

Wholesale pricing through EE Distribution is not available."

I don't know why, but I just don't like this one.  Maybe it's because the head doesn't fit the pose, but this is one of the few Vader items I am not in a rush to get, if at all.  I would really like to see one in person, hopefully it won't be so damn shiny looking.

Hate it ::)

I don't know why but somehow he looks like a burned skin-flute peeking out of the top of the armor suit. Even Lamer if no helmet furnished.

My significant other would never let me display that 'pink tip'
weiner-head guy in my house anywhere so there's no reason to buy since I can't display it. No, definately a non-purchase for me ::)

I'm a little torn on it.  I don't disagree that without the helmet it's fairly questionable in approach, not at all realistic, more EU-ish.  But I do like the limited pieces moreso than I like an edition size of 20,000.  That might be the wrong reason to buy it, but at least if I get it, decide I don't like it, it'll be easier to reclaim my cash outlay than a regular Vader bust (though I could pick one of those up for half the cash).

When looking a the pic the head looks a little out of proportion with the body. With that said, I preordered one anyway  ::). I'm hoping that after seeing it in person it'll look a lot better. Plus I love GG busts! ;D

I guess I think of Darth Vader as the mask and helmet and much as anything else. It is a little gruesome to have out with a couple of young girls in the house, so I will pass.
I think they made a good estimate with the edition size; not so little that people don't get a shot at it on the primary market, and not so large that it detracts from the collectibility.

That's a very good point.  I think for that very reason I won't be ordering this bust.

yes this piece is a little gruesome, but since I have all the other Darth Vader busts I had to order one.

I will just keep it up and out of sight so my son can't see it till he is older/taller.
