Title: Darth Plagieus Novel Cancelled
Post by: Ghost of QG on April 2, 2007, 06:01 PM
A quote from Sue Rostoni, the executive editor of fiction and comics at Lucasfilm Licensing, on her recent Star Wars.com blog:

I'm sure you've noticed that the Plagueis novel is not listed. It's true. The novel has been cancelled. We decided that this was not the right time to delve into Palpatine's back story and Plagueis's beginnings. You'll still see Jim Luceno around, though, as he's an author we are not willing to lose.

This stinks. I was really loking forward to Palpatine's past. Oh well.

That is too bad, the allusion in the movie definately created some interest in that backstory. It is probably more a matter of "if" than "when" they get around to selling telling it.

Last I checked he was still a Muun, there just isn't a book getting written about it.

i would not be surprised if thats why they cancelled it. aside from this picture:

i was never too hot about him being a muun, with all the aliens in the starwars mythos to choose from: a muun?
why not a gungan while were at it. quite frankly i hope theres a better reason than we don't think he should be a muun, like maybe they'll make a pc game /multimedia thing.

but personally i was really excited about the prospect of getting a new luceno book, if anyone remembers an insider article with him about dark lord, he voiced his hopes of doing a Plagueis/qui-gon book where both would separately be searching for the way to beat death and ultimately come up with different methods.  now, what if in a rough draft JL attempted to portray the shamans of the whill as yoda's species? I'm pretty sure Lucas would smack that outta the park. hence the cancelllation.

He's still a Muun according to Lucasfilm's Leland Chee.

"The announcements for the novel stated that Plagueis was a Muun. Leland Chee has confirmed that, since Plagueis' species did not originate in the novel, it is still considered his canonical species by Lucas Licensing[3]. Dooku and Qui-Gon Jinn would also have appeared, with the latter contacting the Shaman of the Whills as a counterpart to Plagueis' immortality experiments. "

ok i think we need to start a campaign to get them to make this, this would have been really good. i had not even considered them showing some of Qui-Gon's training under Dooku.wish they'd change there minds about this.

I just thought it was kinda funny how at first you remarked how you were happy they weren't releasing this, then you want to start a "campaign" for them to release it.

Hopefully this idea will be revisited.

I would have much rather read a book about Plagueis than another about Bane. I enjoyed the Bane book and will enjoy the second, but I'd rather get some history on a different Darth. Though I do agree the Muun thing doesn't feel right.

Oh, I was extremely disappointed when I read that this book had been canceled. It's not like there isn't a big enough following for it to sell well. Just the fact that Palpatine mentions his name in Episode III should be reason enough for people to be interested. I watched that scene over and over again when I first heard about this book thinking....how cool is that going to be?

Sadly, we'll never know. :-[

Unless someone is able to get it rolling again later on down the road. There's always a chance I suppose.

Wake up, zombie thread!

I saw the cover art for this book at the Del Rey books booth at NYCC.  It's a throwback to a shot from TESB, with Vader kneeling before the hologram of the Emporer.  But in this illustration it's Sidious kneeling before the oversized visage of Darth Plagueis.  And he's still a Muun, too.

Amazon now has it listed for a January, 2012 release (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Plagueis-James-Luceno/dp/034551128X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1318897640&sr=1-1).

Maybe with who's on the back cover, perhaps that's why the story was delayed... they wanted to include Maul and Luceno, had to rework it?

So Palpatine didn't really kill Plagueis in his sleep?

Since the back cover says Plagueis never died.

Seems like Palpatine never dies, either, just resurrects himself in a clone (of course maybe they finally offed him, just going by Dark Empire).

Started this. Pretty interesting so far. Just getting to the part where Plagueis is going to meet Palpatine (or at least his family) I believe.

If you enjoy SW books you need to read this. The Plagueis stuff was interesting. The Palpatine stuff is fascinating. Getting the back story and "behind closed doors" stuff on him leading up to and into The Phantom Menace.

And then all the interesting things about and leading up to the roles of Jedi Master Dooku, Padme, Sifo Dyas, Nute Gunray, San Hill, Valorum, Darth Maul, Qui Gon, Obi Wan, and the list goes on.

Fun to read a SW book again that I really enjoyed.

I finished this today and I actually have to give it a solid thumbs up.  I was intrigued as to how long Plagieus was alive and how cool Palps backstory was...  Plus it really fills in a lot of Prequel plot...Trade Fed,  Naboo Politics,  Dooku, Sifo-Dyas, the rest of the Separtists, it is well done and one of the first EU novels I have enjoyed in a long time!

That's a really solid recomendation since I didn't think you were much on EU Scott.  I may pick this up now too.  I'm still a little bothered by the alien choice for Plagueis though.  :-\  I think I can get past that, but I just found that species kind of lame.
