Vintage Kenner / Re: Playsets
« on: April 30, 2004, 09:07 PM »
i loooove the playsets and the vehicles that have a playset feel to them (falcon, slave 1).  just picked up a loose near mint (probably very fine actually in comic book parlance) death star space station--working cannon, foam, dianoga, compactor, cardboard, stickers, instructions, box, nothing broken--missing the blue rope but i am currently working on that one--had the death star as a kid and basically played with it until it fell apart so it was cool to get it out of the box and put it together---think i might go after the ewok village or dagobah next.   if they weren't fighting in the backyard sandbox, my figures were taking over the death star or, later, greyskull

just got my sas 80's operational squad along with the assault vehicle.  sweeeeeeeeet.  think these guys are my favorite by far of all the ones I have so far.  the vehicle is just too cool.  though fett and solid snake are up there also.

does anyone else collect these guys?  I just picked up the swat member (black fatigues) at gamestop.  they are actually pretty cool, 6'', lots of accessories and swapable heads.  the emergency line has 3 firefighters, a k-9 officer, 2 swat, and a bomb disposal.  they are just good solid toys, not as articulated as marvel legends unfortunatley, but pretty nice (about 16 points I'd say).  I missed the line before this (lots of seal and delta guys) and really the only place I've seen them is on ebay.  they are doing a wwII line next.

There was some great things though, and to me the first 3 or 4 waves will go down as the BEST waves of toys ever.  I mean, that first time you opened Snowjob, and saw skis that you could have him slide down a packed snow hill, well that rocks...  And having Airborne repel down a rope...  Those first vehicles that tied in perfectly to the first series of figures...  The first glider vehicles that really flew, and they actually would stay in the air a long time and do loops...  The Skystriker with working ejection seats that had parachutes on them.

Come on, that's GOOD toy making.  That's toy making Hasbro seems to have left LONG behind.

amen to that. I loved gi joe. it was really the only thing that ever knocked off star wars for me as a kid (though boba fett was often recruited for top secret cobra missions, usually when firefly was unavailable..i.e., captured and held in castle greyskull)

the playability of those toys was off the chart and the accessories that each came with were great...especially ones like stormshadow, scrap iron, and firefly.  though the 'regular' army look of that first wave (short fuse, rock n' roll, breaker, etc) was cool.  it made scarlett and snake eyes stand out even more

I've thought about replacing a lot of my original ones since most are a helpless pile of arms and legs and busted o-rings (though insanely loose firefly is still on my desk along with insanely loose boba fett).

I haven't seen any and I've tried about every different style stand I have to make them stand. but as it is now, bump desk, all fall over, spend 5 minutes standing them back up and putting weapons in their hands, repeat.

it's a bootleg.  there is also a boba fett and some sets of new hope, esb, and rotj characters (in tins), plus a han in carbonite floating around. I bought the fett one a year or so ago and it is cool just not as cool as the official medicom one (the arms of bootleg one always fall off).

biker scout

han in carbonite

batman

fett

anh

rotj

full set

sorry for all the links...too..much...free...time

yah, this game rocks. I like in-depth, don't-just-sit-there-pusing-buttons gaming. also have been playing splinter cell (another clancy based game). it's all about stealth so if you actually have to use your pistol you're kind of either out of options or not really playing 'correctly'. it's lots of fun but very drawn out, slow paced gaming.

definately in. I ordered mine from uncle george last week and it's supposed to be here tomorrow (27th) so I'll get to put my new computer to work.

I don't collect them at the moment but I really like the re-releases they are doing, basically get the same toy without paying insane prices. soundwave is coming soon so I will be all over him (and starscream once I see him again). there is a shop here in the international district that sells some of the asian market exclusives like megatron and 'stealth' starscream, etc. I drool over them everytime I go by.

yah, I agree. I think temuera morrison is a very underestimated actor.  if I were a director, I think he'd be in every movie I made in some role or other. he scared the crap out of me in once were warriors. just an amazing role and performance.  I'll have to keep a look out for beautiful country if it pops up here.

cory----once were warriors is awwwwwwwesome--great call. have you seen broken english as well? it's about a croatian family in aukland and the cultural clash when the croatian and maori fall in love, etc. your man temuera is in it also.  I don't like it as much as once were wariors but it's pretty good.
