Title: Force Friday: What are You Buying?
Post by: Brian on August 21, 2015, 10:57 AM
After looking through all the pics and info over the past couple weeks, I've been trying to come up with a game plan for Force Friday (or that weekend, or whenever you get out to shop).  I've sold stuff/set aside money in anticipation, and hope to stick to a budget and not go too crazy.  I know that reactions to the stuff have been mixed, so I was curious what everyone hopes to pick up from this line?  For me, I think its looking like this:

Basic Figures - One of each of the new characters, likely passing on stuff we've seen before (Bespin Luke, Vader, etc.)  Same goes for the armor up figures, might get the Chewie and Poe.

Vehicles - I'd like to get the new Falcon, I dig the X-Wing and TIE as well.  Not sure if I'll get all three right off the bat, but eventually.  The smaller vehicles will be case by case, definitely want Rey's speeder though.

Black Series - All of these please, aside from the ginormous TIE.  Still undecided on that one.

Aside from that, I'll have to wait and see if we get anymore that wasn't listed in recent pictures.  I'll likely continue to get all "new" characters from the Force Awakens, and hold out hope for a more SA line eventually too.  Also, for some reason I sort of want that NERF Chewie bowcaster.  I'll be looking at the LEGOs as well, but that's a whole other thread :).

Mission series pack with BB and the aliens
Constable whatshisname

If that.

The 2 Rebels Mission Series packs
The Y-Wing Scout Bomber with Kanan
The 5 new 6" figures
The TRU exclusive 6" Blue trooper
The Target exclusive 6" 2-pack (apparently this will not be out on FF)
The Walgreens exclusive Emperor or Vader 6" figure (if it is out yet, they are hinting it will be)
The 6" scale TIE Fighter

I would eventually like doubles of the 6" stormtrooper, but I think 1 per customer is the cool way to go for MM.

While I agree it's the "cool way to go", I think I'd grab a second in case you never find another in the wild since it's a troop builder (and also scalpers).

- LEGO Millennium Falcon
- BB-8/scavenger set
- Ahsoka/Vader Rebels set
- Zeb/Chopper Rebels set
- Black Series 6 inch Finn/Rey/Kylo/Stormtrooper
- Micro Machines (all)

Trying to keep my budget at around $250 for MM and spread out the rest of the purchases over the coming months, with the 3.75 inch stuff being on the chopping block if I feel I'm spending too much. I eventually plan on snagging all of the LEGO sets and some of the 3.75 inch stuff, but the LEGOs are all expensive for some reason, so I'll wait for some deals.

Based on what we "know" (i.e. what we have seen leak so far) is "confirmed" for "Mystery Box Friday":

-The five 6" Black Series figures (Finn, Rey/BB-8, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, FO Stormtrooper)
-6" First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter with TIE Pilot (if it actually is released for FF)
-6" TRU Exclusive Blue Trooper (whatever it turns out to be unless it's something ridiculous and not film-based)

-3.75" Mission Series Rebels Ahsoka Tano/Darth Vader two pack

-Lego General Grievous Constructable Figure

And that's pretty much it.  I plan on getting some of the 3.75" vehicles eventually (Rey's Speeder, Finn's Speeder, FO Snowspeeder, and maybe the TIE Fighter depending on how badly out of scale it is) and all of the Lego sets, not to mention any SA figures should they actually get released, but otherwise, it's going to be a light night for me, financially, compared to previous Midnight Madness events.

Other than that, nothing.

I have like almost $300 now in points at Kmart so I will spend a bit there as $50 will expire anyway.

I definitely am buying:

-Rey's Speeder...  That looks scaled right detailed and bitchin.  Love it!  It's the type of thing down the road I could see buying more on sale to repaint as it could fit in with the OT easily too.  But 9/4 I will own one and see if I can custom up Rey to be a better figure too.

-thug/scavenger & bb8 2-pack...  I want a BB8 and I think those aliens look neat enough as is.  Sure I want SA aliens but all 3 for $15 I won't bitch.

I'm not sure if I will buy the following all on the first day but some I think I will:

-BAW Res Trooper, Poe, & TIE Pilot...  Thinking 2 of the 3 I may be able to articulate myself easily enough and Poe may be a little more work but I dig Pilots enough I'd like to own the first one.

-BAW Flametrooper, Finn, Constable...  Again I think I can articulate two of them easily and the constable guy I'm ok buying as just an alien to put into any scene on my shelves.

-BAW these 3 I'm really debating but Rey, Stormtrooper, and Phasma...  Don't know if I want another Rey and don't know if I want too many stormtroopers to mess with.  Phasma is neat, so more likely for me to pick her up.

-Speederbike w/elite Trooper...  It just looks fun for me.  And again I think I can articulate him beyond what extra I think he already may have.

Then I have several items I'm debating and reluctant to buy full price:

-Snowspeeder...  I like this despite it being slightly small.  I would want to customize here though and that would hamper me wanting to pay $25-30 then.  You get a figure though, sooooo eh.

-Sandspeeder...  Similar to above but slightly less interesting to me so much more likely a sale purchase.

-ATRT...  Not sure where my interest is here yet at all but more than likely sale.

-Armored Poe...  I like the figure, but that price?  Nope.  Sale or bust.

Goofy things I want:

-Stormtrooper NERF gun to chase the cat around.

-RC BB8...  I'd buy either of these on sale ultimately.

DEFINITELY In Sale:

-XWing & TIE Fighter...  I wouldn't mind owning either one really but reality is neither impressed me scale wise and short of a steep and impressive discount I'm out on these.

And that is where I stand.  I will set a budget with my Kmart points and get some of the top of my list wants.  From there I will begin to make decisions based more on price/sale than anything.  I can wait this out and not care if I miss something at all really.

Oh and chopper/zeb will be an impulse buy but most likely a buy so I get Chopper finally.

I'm surprised they are still teasing BB-8 over at the Sphero web site. We all know what it is. Lets just get the video up of it and show us the $150 price tag.

Just like every other licensee, Disney has the gag order out on them.  I'm sure you will hear plenty about it at all your favorite fan sites 12:01 am on 9/4 when the floodgates open and everyone can start talking. ;)

So...1 week from tonight the Madness kicks off. At this point people seem to have a pretty good idea of what will be out there (exclusives aside). Curious to hear what folks are planning for that night. Solo runs? Group thing?

I'm still struggling to come up with a sensible plan for that night. TRU is the obvious first priority just because of the exclusive 6" Blue Trooper. But that's also the store that is most likely to be overcrowded because of the limited locations. I feel like if I had some reasonable level of confidence that there will be plenty of the blue troopers to go around I would prefer to start elsewhere and swing by around 2 or 3am after the hubbub dies down. I don't want to risk not getting that thing though, so it's a tough call at this point.

There's only 1 Target around here opening at midnight so that one is likely to be mobbed too I think. At least there you've got a better shot since getting to the actual toys requires a footrace through the store and I'm confident I can outrun all those fat sweaty nerds.  :D  I definitely want to get the 6" TIE Fighter there given the $25 off any purchase over $100 deal.

Walmart really seems like the best option IMO. They have lots of different stores around here and they almost all stay open 24 hours anyway. They also tend to stock around 10pm so ideally one could get there early and score those hard to find figures without the hassles of waiting in line for hours on end.

What do you guys plan on doing?

I have been pondering the same question as you McMetal.

I'm leaning towards starting at Toys R Us, getting in-and-out as quickly as possible and then heading over to Target after that.

Honestly?  I don't know.  I'm going to play it by ear.  I'm definitely not going to deal with the crowds for the midnight madness event.  Part of that is my work schedule, and part of it is not wanting to mix it up with people who have worked themselves into a frenzy.

I'd rather do my shopping at a more reasoned, deliberate pace, so I'll hit the stores during the afternoon.  I won't be buying everything at once.  There's likely to be plenty of stock.  And since the plan is for there to only be the same merchandise offered on Force Friday through the release of the film, I don't feel that much need to get EVERYTHING right away.

Good question. I took September 4 off of work since I have to go to Houston the next day anyway, otherwise I wouldn't be able to go (like most sane people). I'll probably hit TRU since there's one 5 minutes from where I live. Only problem is it's at an intersection of 2 major highways, so it will probably be crowded. I figure I'll go mostly for the experience, then hit up a Wal-Mart afterwards.

I'm going to hit up the LEGO store the next morning and grab whatever they have too. I was there the other day to get the TPM poster and talked with the manager, who said they already have the sets in the back, will put them out on the 4th, and it will be cheaper than TRU.

How bad are TRU MM crowds? The only one I've done was for Clone Wars, and I just hit a Wal-Mart and had to battle a crowd of roughly 8 people. Might be worth just going to a Wal-Mart and skipping TRU entirely.

I finally figured out an itinerary for tomorrow night. Looks like I wll be meeting up with a couple of friends and hitting Target first, then TRU, then a Walmart and Walgreens, and maybe 3 more Walmarts after that if I still have gaps to fill.

I just feel like the line at TRU is more likely to be nuts, the Target thing seems to be flying under the radar a little bit. One of my peeps has assured me that a friend of his at TRU will hold a few of the exclusive Blue Troopers for us so we won't be in danger of missing out. Fingers crossed.

I sure hope I can get everything I want that night early and not have to run around in the wee hours. Work is going to be rough the next day...

I honestly not sure I want to pick up everything. I'm not too wild at all about the 5 POA style, but I'll pick up the Stormtroopers and 6 inch for sure.

It sure seems like a much more reserved approach for many this time around. Are many here even planning on going out at midnight? I haven't decided yet. Part of me is excited for new product and thinks it might be fun, but it is also a bit odd to have it on a Thursday night. I don't really have any collector friends locally, so I'd be flying solo on this one.

I remember the last time there was one of these, I picked up the BMF (among other things), but I don't know that any one item excites me as much this time around. I'm thinking the Black Series figures will be the fastest selling this time, and what I'm most worried about finding.

I think Chewie and I (and another collector I've yet to meet) are going to Midnight Sadness.  For me, it's mainly to enjoy the experience, but I know for some like Chewie, who was interested in picking up the TIE and X-Wing, who isn't going to buy them after seeing the poor reviews and feel there's no point in going now.  We may just meet up and get wings somewhere instead.

FWIW, I chatted up a manager of the local MM Target today at lunch, and she told me they would be closing at 11pm and re-opening at midnight. Then they will be closing again at 2am. All the stuff is going to be located in the rear seasonal section at the farthest corner of the store, where the back to school stuff is chilling now.

I asked if they would be admitting people in groups or let them bust through all at once, but she wasn't sure. She mentioned the possibility of letting people queue up in the store though, which sounds like potentially even more of a clusterF.

Good luck guys!

This just in from New Zealand...where MM is in full swing right now:

NO SA figures

NO surprise SW toys that have not already been leaked in the past few weeks

NO indication what the TRU exclusive is exactly, still (seriously, are we really gonna have to wait til 12:01am to know what this thing is?)

Hopefully we get better news in the hours to come from other countries. UK in particular should be a good indicator.

Found some 6" figure reveals on the Global Unboxing event (https://youtu.be/i3OkEpkwC4E?t=11m50s).  Disney stores will actually have these die-cast figures that appear to be a similar scale to the 6" Black Series.

I am a bit concerned about the Big TIE too...have not heard or seen any confirmation from earlier time zones, and I've been looking.

Looks like that long rumored Walgreens exclusive isn't likely to show up either. And I'm hearing there might not be an exclusive TRU blue trooper at every location yet either. Could have to scale back expectations.

At any rate, I am headed out in about 30 minutes to do a few preemptive Walmart runs on the way to Target. I hope everyone finds what they are looking for tonight and there is no ugliness on display. Happy hunting!  ;D

Just got back from hitting FOUR STORES for Force Friday. What a HUGE letdown. Were all stores limited to 1-2 cases of product? Because that's pretty much all I saw.

Stop 1: Walmart 1. 5 people in a small line near electronics. First guy in line grabs EVERY Black Series figure. ******* really, *******? Tons of Micro Machines and Hot Wheels Die Cast ships, 2-3 of each 3.75 inch fig (just troopers, Finn, Poe, Phasma and Kylo were available along with Luke and Vader). Only LEGO sets were Rey's speeder and the 2015 Advent Calendar, which I snagged because the calendars are hard to find now. That's IT.

Stop 2: TRU. Had all of the LEGO sets (plus TRU tax) and lightsabers and some of the RC/drones/whatever. That's IT. If they had any figures, they were long gone when I got there at 10 after midnight. I'm able to get a free LEGO brick though, so it wasn't a total loss.

Stop 3: Walmart 2. Same stock as above, but there are some figures remaining. I snag Finn, Rey and Chewie, the only TBS figures they have. An employee is giving out free Topps dice or something and just gave me a handful.

Stop 4: Walmart 3. They didn't even put stuff out.

So now I'm stuck hunting for a damn Kylo Ren and a Stormtrooper (and realizing how dumb I sound for being so worked up over plastic toys). I'll be out of town for Labor Day weekend so I might hit some small town WMs during my travels but I'm not expecting to find much. Wish I would have known the stores either got no stock or were purposefully not putting everything out so I wouldn't have wasted my time.

Arrived at TRU at about 11:10pm and was in about the last third of the line.  I wanted the X-Wing and TIE Fighter, despite the weak reviews.  Got in and was able to snag a TIE fighter and Rey's speeder bike, but never saw the X-Wing.  I assume it was there, just others got to it first.  There were people with shopping carts full of stuff.  Then went down the street to a Wal Mart, which was a huge let down - mostly just Legos, figures, etc.  I did pick up some of the 6" figures, though and got the ones I wanted.  Then went to another Wal Mart which was stocked about the same and didn't get anything.  Wal Marts were pretty much empty compared to the near-chaos of Toys R Us.   Lastly went to the one Target in my area that was open.  No X-Wing.  I'm not entirely disappointed nor am I entirely etastic for the evening's finds.  Guess I'll try hitting another Target early tomorrow to see what turns up.  Have to keep reminding myself there is going to be tons of these things sitting around in a matter of days or weeks :)

I walked into the Target downtown and those mid-sized vehicles were $45.99.  The Speeder Bike sized vehicles were $30.99.

My receipts from TRU last night show that I paid $29.99 and $19.99...

I bought nada today.

Except a 2005 Barada figure I found at a garage sale.  Nada but Barada!

I was briefly tempted by a flame trooper, but the only one left had sloppy paint ops.

Also, Hero Mashers Bossk...but I kinda heard Mashers suck.

I found a 3 3/4" tie fighter and most of the smaller vehicles. No figures at all in chino hills. 3 3/4" or 6". 12" and bigger where still around. TRU said they got three cases and  one guy put them all in his cart last night!

I kept my purchases kind of limited today.

BASIC FIGURES
- Resistance Trooper
- Constable Zuvio
- First Order TIE Fighter Pilot
- First Order Flame Trooper

6" FIGURES
-Chewbacca

VEHICLES
First Order Speeder Bike with Elite Trooper
First Order Assault Walker with Stormtrooper Sergeant
Rey's Speeder with Rey

A lot of the stores had been pretty well picked over by the time I got there.  Still, I very deliberately held off on buying the basic versions of Finn, Poe and Rey. Especially in light of the news about the Walmart exclusive SA figure wave.  The biggest kicker?  I had those Target coupons and was fully expecting to be able to use that $25 off of a $100 purchase.  But I couldn't even find $100 worth of merchandise at Target that I really wanted, and was resigned to using the $10 off of $50 coupon instead.

With all the hype that Disney and Hasbro put on the toys they released today, you would have thought they would have been better stocked. They still stock limited quantities and not even enough to make it much beyond midnight. Now we have to wait a week for them to restock.

Yeah, I was just mentioning this in the purchases thread, but I was surprised how lacking the stock seemed to be in a lot of ways - at least the items we were watching out for.  TRU had a good supply of the basic figures, but WM was selling down and Target was basically sold out - at least they were sold out of the Force Awakens characters.  The Black Series was the hottest ticket everywhere I went (there were even people calling Target asking for them while I was there).  It seemed like Finn, Kylo Ren, and Chewie will be the easier finds there.  Poe's X-Wing seemed to sell well here too.  I wanted to get it, but didn't really have the budget for it right now - and I will say that $50 seems a little steep.  Overall, just surprised there wasn't more of an avalanche of products.  Granted, there is a ton of Star Wars "stuff" (it is really cool seeing it take up a whole aisle by itself at Target again), but as far as the action figure stuff goes it seemed like one or two customers could have cleaned it out.

I wrote a little blurb about my MM experience in the Recent purchases thread.

Okay. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the line, I still picked up a fair amount. However, I still haven't warmed up to it. Excited to hear about the return of vintage and the black series, so I'm waiting for more word on these items before I decide how I'm going to treat the 5 POA figures. At this point, I may just leave it all packaged. Though, I did play with an open Ray with speeder and found it to be pretty cool.

I got the Desert Landspeeder and was actually rather pleased by it.  Have a couple of ROTJ Rebel Endor soldiers crewing it and the vehicle is very much like the DPV buggies or other stripped-down & heavily-armed vehicles modern special forces troops use.  So not disappointed there.

The real treat (for me at least) turned out to be the Revell Snaptite X-Wing and TIE kits.  They weren't really model kits, but rather toys you have to piece together.  They are approximately 1:48 scale, but have excellent detailing, moving parts, light & sound features, and are pretty solid in construction.  A win in my book.

Checked a few stores today and was shocked at the lack of any figures at any of the stores I went (WalMart, Target and TRu)

There was TONS of SW crap...fliers, pillows, lightsabers, masks...no freaking figures

I am not one to pile on the Hasblow talk as these are toys for kids, but man I can't believe they missed the mark this badly

Also supremely interested in the lack on one piece of merchandise (outside of Lego Han) of the big 3

Lego did their job correctly. It wasn't a problem finding most lego sets. But Hasbro still doesn't get it even after this huge media event that made every newspaper and evening news station. Some heads need to role at Hasbro.

The lack of product definitely seems to be the overall story of Force Friday. Hopefully stores will see more shipments soon. Our Target is sold out of all figures, and even the Hero Series stuff is sold down to nearly nothing. I found what I wanted for the most part last Friday, but hope we see more stuff hitting in general soon just so everyone can find what they want. I hit TRU today to check on their figure sale, and they did have a handful of basic figures: Zuvio, Resistance Trooper, and Finn (also Luke/Vader). Others were gone. Same at WM. The 6" stuff was all Chewie and a lone Finn.

Disappointing thst they don't have any of the Second wave of BS 6" figures, nor the second wave of Armor Up guys, nor the Mission Series 2-packs. All of that stuff has been found in stores already. Just not many. I would have bought all that...

Wait... I addition to Wave 2 of the Build-a-Weapon Jungle/Space/Desert/Snow figures there's already a second wave of the Armor-up figures? And they have been found? Who's in wave 2?

Sorry, I may have misspoke. I don't collect the regular figures and its confusing because they all come with goofy pack ins now. I was referring to whichever line has Ezra in it in the next wave...maybe it is the basic figure line?

I heard they included his lightsaber for this release, so I really want that one. None of the Kohl's around here got them though.

Ok - yeah - Armor-up and Build-a-Weapon are two different price-points/sub-lines. I wish I had taken a better look at the Ezra I saw in person last night at Kohls - the ONLY figure I would have considered paying $11.99 for was the First Order Snowtrooper - so was disappointed that the only figure I found was the Ezra re-pack. If he does include his blaster/lightsaber combo weapon, that would make for a moderately compelling reason to buy this repack...

Edit: Swung by another Kohls on my way home from work tonight, the ONLY figure I would consider paying $11.99 would be the First Order Snowtrooper but alas, that figure always seems to be missing - did see Ezra, Kanan and Asty tonight though. Anyway - Ezra DOES INDEED feature a new accessory - his custom lightsaber! So that's a very cool addition and certainly makes buying this figure just to open to complete the build-a-weapon much more easier to swallow (although not by much)

It's funny how it's feast or famine. We were all moaning about how nothing was on the pegs, now it's a glut of wave 2 product slowing the new waves from making the pegs.
