Title: Gentle Giant Statues
Post by: Morgbug on December 17, 2004, 12:01 PM
Anyone going to preorder the Vader statue?  What retailers aside from SSW.com are going to carry it?  Any chance of picking it up for less than $200?  Not bloody likely?

Uh, I'm guessing not bloody likely.  But I sure wish they'd give us some more pics to see if this Darth Vader statue is even worth that.  So far the pics are pretty obscure.

I ordered one as soon as I saw it posted at RS.  I have Sideshow Luke and Han on preorder so I figured I'm gonna quit the 12" dolls and go this route.  I can always cancel my order if I end up not liking the new pictures but it's Vader so I'm sure I'll just buy it in the end.

Vader statue for cheap? (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7942281160&fromMakeTrack=true)

Well, whaddya think?  Seller has 50 at $149.99.  Not bad, save $50 (25%) but it's a long time away :-\  Too risky or a good deal?  Only a deposit is required, so even if they bugger off, you're not out the full amount.  Seems interesting to me.

Seems like a great deal Brent.  I might cancel my order and go this route (and I was just about to post this cheaper deal):

Ooo, very tempting.  2947 feedbacks, with 100% positive.  It certainly appears that he's on the up and up.  And it may be worth $20 plus shipping to save $50.  Very tempting.

Try to get in tight with a local comic dealer Brent.  They can order the piece for you out of Diamond's Preview book.  My guy gives me a 20% discount on all of my GG orders.  I'll probably get the Vader for about $160.  Look into that kind of angle.

$200, is that MSRP?  I'm pretty sure you will be able to find it cheaper online.  A good place to check is Barnes and Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/) when they go on sale.  I got my Chewbacca Statue there for less than $150 delivered and it has a MSRP of $185.  Also if you're a member there it's a few dollars cheaper.

Order it through a comic shop.  My local comic shop lets me pre-order Gentle Giant merchandise through Diamond Previews.  As a rule, I get 20% off the retail price that Diamond lists these items for in Previews.  If the suggested retail price is $200, you should be able to get this for about $160 without paying shipping.

God, those look beautiful Jon.  Nice pick up!  What'd they run you?

When I have a little more time, I'll probably separate out all the GG "statue" posts here and start a whole new thread just for them, since it looks like this will be an ongoing line...

Did you order the Speederbike set yet, or is that not available for pre-order yet?

I got the Vader and the 3PO from the same seller on ebay.  $168.77 for the Vader and $107.99 for the 3PO.  Plus shipping of course.  I have not pre-ordered the Scout Trooper statue yet.  I'm not sure I'm going to either.  I can't find the Sandtrooper on Dewback anywhere for under $350 so I might pass on the statue diorama's and just stick to the 1/6 scale statues.

I got the Vader on Friday.  It is incredible!  I have now got a Chewbacca statue on the way in a trade.

I am passing on the C-3PO statue since we already have a bust of him but no bust of Chewie.

Took a cursory look and didn't find a thread....

Just got the GG update and it had this to say:

And like in San Diego, we have been authorized to take pre-orders for a Chrome Darth Vader statue with light-up lightsaber blade for $325 plus shipping and tax.  And for that ultimate collector, make sure to get your pre-order in for a life-size Yoda with light-up lightsaber and sound for $800 plus shipping and tax.  We're not sure when and where we will be able to take pre-orders for these items in the future. So, if you get your pre-orders in at the show, you will be guaranteed to receive the piece.  Also please remember due to our contract with Lucasfilm, we can only directly ship our Star Wars products to the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Chrome Vader statue with light up saber.
Life size Yoda with light up saber.

How did I miss this?

I've been meaning to split out all the prior GG statue discussion from the GG Busts thread Brent (where folks have been discussing the statues to date).  I'll still get around to doing that at some point soon hopefully, so don't get too used to seeing you as the thread author here...  ;)

As for the statues themselves, very nice looking, but just too big for an already overflowing collection room, so I'll be passing on these.  Sure love that sweet lookin' Biker Scout leaning on his Speederbike though!  8)

I was on StatueForum.com and found this pic.  I think that must be the life-size Yoda to the right.   :o  It also appears the Chrome Vader statue is next to it (with the light-up lightsaber).

You can also see the Luke on Tauntaun at the bottom of the display case.  As well, the Darth Maul and Boba Fett statues are there as well.  (Apparently, they had requested that the Boba Fett statue not be photographed because it was still in the prototype stage)

Two of the newest GG statues are up for preorder at StarWarsShop.com, both available Feb 2006:

Darth Maul (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=104322&ReferrerID=CJADBN-00001)

Luke on Tauntaun (http://shop.starwars.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=104319&ReferrerID=CJADBN-00001)

I'm a fan of pretty much anything Darth Maul related, but I would have preferred a more aggressive pose.  The Luke on the Tauntaun looks incredible!

Anyone thinking of getting the Maul statue?  There's a guy on the rebelscum forums saying he can sell them for $130 shipped if he gets enough people to order.  http://www.wantedheroes.com/ is his site and here's the link to MAUL: http://www.wantedheroes.com/maul.htm -- it's listed for $155 now, but if he gets 6 people or more he'll drop it down to $130 and refund everyone the difference.  Sounds sketchy, but people claim they have ordered stuff from him in the past and it's worked out great.  Anyone heard of this guy before?    Here's the thread on rebelscum:

http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1385367&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#1385367

Also -- anyone know the cheapest place to find the Vader statue?  Ebay the best bet?

Definitely nice looking, and I know a lot of folks who have been anxiously awaiting this piece.  Not sure about that pose though, with the couple fingers oddly extended like that.  Did he ever strike that pose in ESB?  Don't recall him doing so.  Probably just GG taking some artistic liberties.  Cool nonetheless...

I'm not gonna mess with these statues though, as I just don't have the room for them, nor the wife's patience/support to delve into another subline like this.  Bummer, as I'd love to have some of these beautiful statues!

Although we certainly can't afford for me to collect something like these, I am kind of interested in them.  I've always wanted to have some nice, high end statues to display at home here, and it seems like the Gentle Giant ones are quite spiffy.  I might have to see if I can't drop some lines/save up so I can get a couple to have on display.  The Unleashed line is great, but these look pretty high quality.  What is everyone's overall opinion of these things?  Maybe I would be better off going with the somewhat cheaper mini-bust route, but there's something about having a full statue like these that seems kind of neat too.

My opinion is to find space and money for a couple of them that you really like.

I have the dewback, and have a tauntaun on order. I think they are magnificent, and the unleashed line is the line I dropped in order to have the money/space for these. I also trimmed my mini-nust collection. While the mini-busts are great, a case full of head-and-shoulders loses something compared to the full statues. It's just an opinion, but I have had no regrets having done what you are thinking about.[/

I have too much SideShow product on the way to have both versions of the Maul statue. :P

After Brent mentioned the Japanese exclusive Blackhole Stormtrooper mini-bust, I hunted a bit to find that there is also the silver Vader statue appears to be a Japanese exclusive as well.

http://www.blister.jp/55gg/

I'm not as crazy about this statue in it's chrome form, but the light-up lightsaber is pretty cool.

...edit... After fighting with the translation a bit, it seems that there will be 1000 pieces available from Blister.jp, but a total of 2500 pieces available worldwide.  So I imagine the other 1500 should be made available to North America at a later time.

I received confirmation that my Tauntaun statue has shipped! I am stoked- the photos I've seen look great. I'm not sure I want to make room for all of these things, but the Rancor looks great, and I'm hoping they do a wampa too. Gentle Giant has some damn fine sculptors in their midst.

Lucky! Still waiting on my preorder....
Are you going to display 2 of them Kirk? One with each alternate head?

Speaking of preorders, I just made the move to preorder the Rancor statue.  The new GG stuff upcoming is pretty smokin', I did not want to chance them selling out. I bought the Dewback when it first came out, and am really glad I did!

"The number of day sales": 1000
"The worldwide number of limitations": 2500

Here you go Jesse, Slave1 has some nice pictures of this bad boy.  8)

Well, I came home Monday to find a box the size of a recliner in the driveway. I haven't opened it yet, because getting yourself huge christmas presents doesn't always go over well. I am thinking I will have my wife tell the kids about it, and they can wrap it up as Daddy's big gift. That accomplishes two things, it gets the kids involved in the collection (always a good move) and it means it can't be sold in the future because it was from the kids.
Has anyone been encountering damage with these that I should worry about inspecting it?

Are the statues made of resin? Because resin is pretty fragile. You can make awsome molds out of resin (no plastic or PVC can get to that accuracy), but they chip and crack pretty easily, and that heppened to a Buddha statue of mine years ago and then decided to not buy resin anymore, I go with PVC only. And there are a few beautiful Masamune Shirow Ghost in the Shell statues made of resin but I'll pass... :-\ The only exception wil lbe GG Leia Slave.
Title: Re: Gentle Giant Statues
Post by: gasman034 on December 14, 2006, 02:13 AM
It's hard to say exactly what the Clone Wars Yoda Monument was constructed from.  If I had to make an educated guess, I would say some type of plastic, perhaps PVC, or even fiberglass.  What I can say for sure is that the statue must weight some 40 pounds and that the crack was a clean one.  I've read elsewhere that many of these have been delivered in damaged condition, and I would highly recommend opening for inspection.  The packaging on this item was simply not up to the task of protecting such massive yet fragile contents.  I wrote GG directly about this oversight, and they admitted that fact.  They also said they were 'currently working with dealers and distributors to replace the damaged and defective pieces.'  I, unfortunately, purchased the item from a secondary seller (eBay), and GG's website clearly states that they are not responsible for damaged/defective items purchased in this manner.  As for the fate of my beloved collection cornerstone, that is a big unknown.  The item was insured for the purchase price, and the seller contacted UPS in regards to the damage.  UPS promptly arrived the next day to take my Yoda and his cardboard coffin away into limbo.  I was confused at their gesture (I thought they would just inspect the damage and give me the insured value), and in my discombobulated state, let the delivery guy cart him off into NeverNeverLand.  I have not heard from them or the seller since.  My only hope is that, some day in the distant future, I'll finally see a pristine giant package arrive on my doorstep and open it to find what can only be described as the ultimate Yoda collectible.  Wish me luck (I'll need it).

Well, despite there being zero padding or clearance between yoda's ear and the flimsy box, it somehow survived unscathed. I will consider myself lucky, and shake my head at the way gentle giant packaged this thing. about 25 little plastic bags of chunks of styrofoam in one of the flimsiest big cardboard boxes I have ever seen. I am amazed any made the trip intact.

Good  luck with your claim Gasman. Hopefully you'll get your money back plus the damaged statue!

If you do, and you go purchase another, I would check toynk.com. They are based in chicago, and only charge 5.99 shipping no matter the size of package! They were also $50.00 cheaper than entertainmentearth.

I'm still kinda sour about how much I paid for the first one and I got it for $40 below retail with shipping, which turned out to be expensive. Are they limiting these at all?

It seems strange that GG would do a Han statue and animated maquette so close to each other - it'll force a lot of casual collectors to choose between the two.

I don't understand the rationale behind LFL allowing two licensees to pretty much do the same product.  Now what is the difference between this Han Solo statue and the one that Sideshow did a few years back?

Actually, including the Attakus statues, that makes at least three "statue" lines out there to collect.

The Sideshow Han was a premium "figure".  Even though the articulation isn't there, the Sideshow premium format "figures" have real cloth clothing parts and accessories, where the GG statues do not.  Not a big difference, but that is why LFL allows it.

Post by: Morgbug on July 6, 2007, 10:22 AM
I own the first GG Vader statue and the Sideshow Premium Vader 'figure' as well.  It really boils down to what you want, how big you want it and the type of accessorization you want.  Do you want more realistic textures to your statue?  Go Sideshow.  Do you want just cold cast?  Go GG.

Honestly, I don't quite see a good reason for it either.  There are differences in scale, to a degree, but beyond that I'm unclear on it.

I'm opting to get rid of my GG Vader statue because I like the Sideshow version better, largely because it matches up so well with the classic Obi-Wan statue and the cloth + light up features make it more entertaining.  There's nothing wrong with the Vader from Gentle Giant, I just don't feel a need for both.

Due to price, I chose the GG piece.

Due to focus, I have gotten all pieces of Maul from everyone... (still trying to nail the ATTAKUS).

Whatchuwant... lol.

That's what it is about.

The timing of the offerings from both Sideshow and Gentle Giant have seemed puzzling at times.  Sideshow puts out their 12" Jabba the Hutt and right around the same time GG announces their Jabba the Hutt and Max Rebo band environments.  I would think that maybe Lucas licensing would be aware of the situation and tell the licensees when they can do a certain item so that two licensees won't be in competition with each other on their offerings.

Exactly.

Medicom and Sideshow share the same dilema.

TESB Darth Vader is shipping this week! I generally don't collect GG stuff, but this one was a must buy for me. It will look great next to my GG Slave Leia.  :P Since I dropped Hasbro, pieces like this are becoming more and more appealing. Instead of collecting an entire line of plastic action figures, having a few of these is much better for me. They don't take up as much space and they are absolutely beautiful.

I might pick up this new Vader statue.  I'm going to look for as good of a deal as I can.  I've gotten to the point where if I can find something like this for a good price, I'll consider buying it.  But if the opportunity doesn't present itself, it won't be the end of the world.

Well, I was just told by a realiable source that these were pushed back a few weeks.  :-[ Strange how RS reported just two days ago that they would be shipping out next week.

It wasn't just RS, it was Gentle Giant themselves (https://www.gentlegiantltd.com/blog/2007/11/162/new-product-shipping) who said it would be shipping this week:

Posted 11/28 (last week):
The Darth Vader ESB Statue just arrived at the docks today, so we should be shipping that out by the end of next week.

Strange that they would push it back after saying that, unless maybe something was wrong with the statues once they started prepping them for shipment...?

Hello Gentle Giant Collectors,

Got my kneeling vader statue this morning, man this thing rocks, the light up base looks very cool.
My only gripe is the sucker is very prone to fingerprints, but it is a fantastic statue, does weigh a bit though so watch where you put it.
Title: Re: Gentle Giant Statues
Post by: Nicklab on January 13, 2008, 08:43 PM
I saw the kneeling Vader in person a few days ago.  It's very impressive to look at.  But the shop that was selling it wanted $199 for it.  And I want a better deal on it than that.

I think the market's getting soft on GG product.  I think the market has gotten somewhat saturated with A LOT of statues from almost as many companies.  I think collectors can only take on so much.  I think the end result is that there might be some more bargains to be found.  And just one example of a Premier Guild exclusive that hasn't sold out has stuck in my mind:  the Senate Guard statue was still available on the Gentle Giant site the last time I checked.  And that was less than a week ago.

I couldn't agree more, but it's soft on more than just the statues.  I just picked up the Royal Guard bust for $22.50 on ebay.  Most GG product I can't be bothered to get anywhere but ebay anymore, simply because in 90% of the cases, I can beat the best retailers prices.  Yeah, there's less protection, but with a paypal auction there's at least the illusion of protection.

I want the second GG statue (especially if I can get rid of my first) because it's different enough from all the other Vader statues out there.  But I'll wait for the price I want, somewhere around $90-130 or so, pre-shipping.

I am supposed to have my Vader statue tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to see what this thing looks like. I've refrained from looking at any pictures that have been posted because I wanted to be surprised. Does anyone know exactly how heavy this thing is? I'm wondering if it's going to be to heavy to sit on my shelf that I've made room on.  :-\

Well I got my Vader today! #148 is sitting on the shelf. It is heavy, but I think the shelf will be fine holding it up. I put it over one of the metal holders for extra support.

The light up base feature is just too cool. GG has done it again.  ;D

This one turned out really nice. They changed the lips and the skin tone, but otherwise it looks pretty darn close to the production shot that is so great. I like how they packed this one too. It's all one piece that's pretty thin, so it comes in a very thin box which makes it easier to store. That's always a good thing.  ;D

Just an update on the Darth Maul with Bloodfin statue. Gentle Giant is no longer accepting returns for exchange. They finally listened to us and they will be attempting to fix the sinking Bloodfin problem, but they did say it could take two months or more. At least they are doing something about it though. For now, mine is sitting on my shelf with the Bloodfin resting on the base just like all the other ones.  :-\

I am actually still waiting on my replacement.  :-\ I sent it out on September 15th and they got it back on the 22nd. It's now October 17th and I haven't heard a word from them. I know Jewell read the email I sent asking about it as I got the read receipt, but I've got nothing.

Aside from the trouble I've had, the statue is very nice. I can see how when it's all set up and not damaged, it will certainly turn heads. I had a place all picked out for it on my shelf even.

What was wrong with it ?

It arrived covered in dust, Dooku didn't fit in the base, the base was scratched up, Dooku was "touched up" with the wrong colored paint and there was no QC sticker in the box. It was quite a mess.

I saw some of those great sale prices as well.  We really don't have the extra money right now, or I'd really like to pick up those TaunTaun sets.  I always thought those would make a nice "set" of statues to have, but unfortunately the sale just comes at the wrong time for me.  Great deals to be sure though.
Title: Re: Gentle Giant Statues
Post by: surfingseattlite on December 1, 2008, 05:06 PM
I couldn' t resist these prices, pulled the trigger and ordered the Jabba, Palace Band, and Han on Tauntaun statues!  These are my first GG purchases ever (collected more 12" Sideshow) and am excited to see what they look like in person.  :)  I wasn't sure which tauntaun statue to choose at first but went with Han after figuring that his likeness was better and the pose of the tauntaun (in motion) looked more interesting.  I am hoping I can still send in the redemption codes for the free Bib Fortuna, think it said in the fine print it was good until the end of December 2008 or until supplies last.  Has anyone recently sent away for and received Bib?

What do GG collectors here that have these statues think of them?  I thought for half price I could get a pretty cool diorama going with Jabba, throne, Oola, Jawa, 3 band members, Salacious Crumb, and hopefully Bib.  Now I might become addicted as that upcoming Wampa statue looks cool and would go nice with my Han on Tauntaun statue!  :D
