Title: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jeff on July 8, 2013, 12:15 PM
Just over one week away... time to start a thread with the official panel announcement!

Hasbro: Star Wars
Friday July 19, 2013 -  1:00-2:00pm (Pacific)

Members of the Hasbro brand and design team, including Derryl DePriest (VP, global brand marketing), Jeff Labovitz (director, global brand marketing), discuss the popular Hasbro StarWars and Angry Birds Star Wars line. Attendees will also get a sneak peek at upcoming action figures. Derryl, Jeff, and team will also host a Q&A for your burning StarWars action figure questions!

What are you looking forward to most at SDCC2013?  3.75" Black Series Waves 3-4?  More of the Black Series 6" figures?  More "sham-poo bottle" 12" figures? :P

I look forward to seeing their featured SDCC exclusive for the 3 3/4" line.  ::)

I'm curious for next round of Black Series unconfirmed figures, and if they'll hint at 2014 at all.  Toy Fair feels like a LONG way off.

Besides that, unless there's some groundbreaking Fall exclusives, tough to call right now what I'd "expect" if anything...  Fall exclusives is about all there is hope for right?

  More "sham-poo bottle" 12" figures? :P

I'm hoping for Sham-Plo Koon and Sham Solo. Dare I say, a Sham-Po Nudo?

I doubt we'll see much more than we already know about.

We might see a third wave of 3.75" Black Series and we'll probably see next waves of the 5POA Legends single figures and mission packs. Maybe a 2nd wave of the Class II vehicles. There are no Class I vehicles anymore and we already know about the three K-Mart exclusives.

I will be seriously surprised if there is anything else on the horizon. Maybe one or two more exclusives, but that's probably about it. I can't imagine that Target won't have at least one or two more - maybe more Vintage 3-packs, and I'm sure TRU will have something this coming fall. But that's about it - we already know what K-Mart's three exclusives are this year and so far, IMHO they lead the pack on best exclusives.

Certainly would like to see more of both Black series. Wonder if the rumoured snowtrooper commander and Vizam re -sculpt will make an appearance -also Toryn far and a new Yoda? but maybe these are a way off.

Even if we don't see them, I'd be happy to hear what's confirmed/slotted for later in the line.

Whatever they announce I hope it's a little less bland. I find the first two waves very dull.

Can't see anything more surprising than last years speedebike. Does Walmart and Target sell Star Wars vehicles anymore anyway? TPM really struck a fatal blow to this line.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Nicklab on July 12, 2013, 10:38 AM
I'm really puzzled about what we might see.  Although it might be nice to have some surprises at long last.

I think we're coming to the end of this really big transition period.  The line needed to rest and reset following the Clone Wars run.  And we're now going to get what Hasbro has been saying they want to do:  a kids oriented line, and a distinctly different collectors line.

I think the vehicle line is clearly going to suffer.  But on that issue, Hasbro covered a lot of ground ever since 2002.  I suspect things might pick back up for the vehicle line come Q3 of 2014 as the promotional leadup to Episode VII starts to build.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: McMetal on July 12, 2013, 02:17 PM
I agree about the vehicles and that's a shame. I find the constant resculpts tiresome, but there were still A LOT of cool designs they could have produced from the Clone Wars seres - the Mando fighters, the Z-95's, the Jedi T-6 Shuttle, etc. I would love to see some of these come out in the future.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 12, 2013, 03:53 PM
If the only GOOD vehicles we ever got were exclusives I'd probably be ok so long as Amazon-ish prices aren't the norm.  The speederbikes awesome but everyone seemed to agree that it and most of TRUs prices are a tad outrageous or at least a little high for what they are.  Thankfully they do sales and coupons.

I see that Rebelscum has posted a pre-Preview Night gallery (http://www.rebelscum.com/2013_SDCC/SDCC_2013_Hasbro_San_Diego_Comic-con_Star_Wars_Tuesday/).

Not a lot of new stuff in there, but some better looks at the Kmart 2-packs and some of the vehicles.

Hasbro also has some of the "missing" Droid Factory figures on display - Sandtrooper, FA-7, Utapau Clone, TIE Pilot, Geonosian, and TC-70.  I guess that means they are coming in some form or another (Black Series Wave 3 maybe?).  Didn't see realistic Capt Rex, A-Wing Pilot, or Mace Windu in there though.

I am SO glad I'm not collecting the 6" line - there is no SDCC-related "am I gonna get the exclusive" stress this year...

The mystery of the missing Rex continues. Hope we don't have to wait as long for him as that scanning crew guy.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jeff on July 17, 2013, 02:07 PM
Just because Rex/Mace/etc weren't there for the pictures taken on Tuesday doesn't necessarily mean they won't be there at all this weekend.  Maybe they just hadn't unpacked that box yet... or maybe they got re-assigned to some multi-pack that will be revealed on Friday or whatever.  Wait and see...
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 17, 2013, 07:56 PM
God I hope they dont' make me buy a multi-pack to get Rex/Mace, and inevitably would include Ani, Obi, and Ahsoka...  Yikes.  At what the Droid Factory set is supposed to cost, making you buy things you already have has become completely unacceptable to me unless I really wanted more of them.

But now that thought is in my head, Jeff.  Thanks.   :-\

You know that's exactly what's going to happen now...  maybe they'll toss in Mace's BAD and it'll be the next $60 Amazon 6-pack. :P

I dread re-buying those cruddy figures again too.

Post by: Jesse James on July 18, 2013, 12:55 PM
I think all 3 are fine figures but I have 2, 3, or more of each...  I want to avoid $60 for the only 2 I want.  If the other 3 were rare or different in some significant way, I'd buy again happily.

Oooh - maybe they'll have new ponchos this time around!  Would that make it better?  Or maybe floppy hats too.  Yeah, new hats.  Golden.

Oh dear. If Dan Curto's intell is correct we shouldn't expect wave three 4" black series till Celebration next week. The big reveal for this line today is...wave 2 ???
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Nicklab on July 19, 2013, 11:06 AM
I guess it should have been expected that Hasbro would hold some of their Star Wars reveal for an actual Star Wars event.  I don't know if Celebration Europe will have the attendance numbers of an American hosted event.  But I think that Hasbro will likely reveal *SOMETHING* today.  What that is, we'll have to wait and see.

Hopefully some brand new exclusive figure packs.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Brian on July 19, 2013, 12:21 PM
I can see why the "news" would be split between SDCC and Celebration, but I feel like between the two Hasbro really has to show us something.  With the long break, and the fact that the first couple waves don't seem to really be lighting the world on fire (since they consist of mostly redone figures, or long delayed figures), the hobby in general really seems to be down.  Now I'm sure things will really pick up as we near Ep. VII, but until then, they need to start generating a little more heat.  I can't remember seeing the forums and online community in general as dead as it is right now, and the Star Wars line in general seems like an after thought with collectors and at retail.  The focus may start to be on the 6" line, which I'm interested in, but it doesn't seem to be taking the community by storm either.  I'm hoping we get something more interesting out of the 3 3/4" stuff this week or next.

One wave of TBS revealed wouldn't surprise me at all...  From what I'm hearing, TBS is going to be a short-lived idea unless it's somehow wildly popular.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: jono on July 19, 2013, 01:30 PM
I wonder if they are negotiating a quicker than expected return to vintage -starting with wave 3?
I'd imagine retailers will be a bigger obstacle than Disney.

From what I'm hearing, TBS is going to be a short-lived idea unless it's somehow wildly popular.

Can you elaborate on that, Jesse?  I mean, is Hasbro thinking that we should get back to Vintage asap, or are there other issues?
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 19, 2013, 01:42 PM
I've not heard that vintage is next, just that bigger fish on the table like new movie(s) and things.  Focus isn't necessarily on the NOW as opposed to the longer-term future, if that makes sense.

Not heard a thing though about Vintage returning other than Hasbro at one point said it wasn't dead forever.  They can roll that out whenever I suppose.  I think TBS is kind of like POTJ, or something similar...  a bit of a stop-gap.  Something new and different looking, but it won't be here LLLLLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGG term.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: P-Siddy on July 19, 2013, 01:44 PM
Gotcha.  It's almost like POTC with the repacks in there.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 19, 2013, 03:19 PM
Maybe...  Don't wanna say for sure, just that the shift to new films changed a LOT of things at Hasbro as far as their focuses, and that came down from the top to just about all the licenses to start thinking beyond now.

TBS may catch on and they decide to stick with it, or stick with it in a more limited/premium type way, or just drop it and go with a whole new look when the time comes in the near future.  It's all just repeated chatter.

Agreed.

Essentially we're gonna be getting what was planned for Droid Factory and that's about it.

Sad.

And I know it was blurry, but it REALLY angers me that the Maul w/Mando legs we're getting is in the crappy 5POA style.

EDIT: Just got a look at that Darth Maul - what a huge F-U to collectors. Exactly what "collection" do you put him in? He doesn't fit in with your animated style Clone Wars figures and looks ridiculous next to the three Vintage-style Clone Wars figures released so far.

I know this is gonna be edited but... you ******* suck Hasbro, you SO ******* suck, it's not even funny at this point, ******* Derryl DeDouchebag needs to go - I hope these ******* pieces of **** rot on the shelves because after all, you've told us all that we collectors don't carry the line, well, I hope kids look at these and say "**** this ****".

From looking at the pictures over at Sir Steve's (http://photos.sirstevesguide.com/g6566-panel-presentation.html) it looks like most of that time was of the game itself and not even Hasbro's products.

I tweeted the damn thing and it was worthless for the first 27 minutes. What I don't get is I thought Toy Fair is where they launched "new segment" stuff. Telepods certainly falls in that category. Not to mention that the stuff that would interest collectors isn't coming for another 3-5 months.

Just how I feel right now is all.

I'm almost hoping it shakes out that way.  So far I've resisted the urge to get involved in the 6" line - and if I do, it'll be OT only.

The idea of collecting 3 3/4" figures for three brand new movies, plus spin-off movies is sort of got me terrified...

And the lack of new product over the last 8 or 10 months has saved me a small fortune.

I would be quite happy with a continued 3 3/4" line that was way scaled back.

Part of me is content that it's come to this. On one hand it's sad, after such a good run, but it was a good run. And I personally love the neo-vintage Saga Legends. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I have become more focused on vintage collecting and these, along with the GG Jumbo Series, are more my speed. I could do without these 4 inch or 6 inch Black Series honestly. Though the 6 inch looks amazing. No doubt about it. Just don't know if the interest is completely there for me to collect another line. Some, sure. I think it will hinge on whether I'm able to get Boba/Carbonite Han. Both have always been high on my favorites list, so if no dice... no dice.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 19, 2013, 10:50 PM
It's saved me too, but the new movies had me excited rather than terrified, and there's still new and updates to older figures I want in 3.75"...

I've always said I'll just go to customizing.  Something I do a lot less of now.  So there's a part of me that'd be fairly "happy" for lack of a better word, but I'd hate to want 3.75" figures to 7,8,9, and any other film they do, and Hasbro just not doing them and abandoning a line that's been 3.75" for many decades now.  That's just wrong to me.

I want something to collect...  and honestly, Wave 2 in November?  I'm not bugged by that.  That's a nice long time to enjoy Wave 1, and hope Wave 1 doesn't "pegwarm" and Wave 2 is well received, and hopefully Wave 3 is pushed to sometime in 2014 then.

I'm ok with that...  spread out, less stuff, just so long as GOOD stuff is still coming out for 3.75" is all.  I don't need 60 figures a year.  I don't need 30 for that matter.  5 a quarter would suit me.

I think people would feel a LOT different though, if things were at 2007 levels of quality and pricing...  Not many "perfect" figures, but the new was everywhere, the innovative was everywhere...  That's gone.

So a sporadic line, some exclusives...  I'm fine.  I think it's what they're offering that's creating so much apathy.

I finally had time to sit down and type up the Hasbro Q&A Session we were granted.

I want to thank Carlos (Solrac) for handling it, and Hunter PR for scheduling us in, and Hasbro for allowing the window to ask some questions one-on-one with them!

Due to some issues with the recorder I had to paraphrase a bit (TONS of background noise) , but conveyed their points and details they did share with us!

Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: Jesse James on July 23, 2013, 10:45 PM
That's a good question...  Well put that one up for a future possible interaction.  I would think no only because I think they're all about the now at this point.  I think they'd just reissue figures should TVC come back and they wanted to get everyone who had a vintage fig onto a TVC card...  Like r5d4 for instance.  I think a carded DSD or that new Snaggletooth are likely repacks if TVC returns and any new figure they do now, like say Boussh or Ree Yees could just be repacks as well...  If they were made. :)

Hasbro loves to milk a tooling they have if they can.
Title: Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!
Post by: McMetal on July 23, 2013, 10:54 PM
Thanks for posting that. For a company as obsessively secretive as Hasbro, they don't seem to have much reticence about sharing when LFL is the driver behind an unpopular decision. (Like killing TVC) I don't think anyone had gotten bored with that packaging yet, just bored with seeing the same 6-10 figures everywhere they went.

Still mixed feelings about the realistic Clone Wars stuff. They've pretty much done all the main characters already, or at least they will have once Rex and Mace come out. You can milk a few more Maul repaints maybe, but what about after that? They need to be open to non-core figures that would still sell well - (see Mandalorians).

They said, as I recall, that lfl didn't want TVC to become "boring" and "that's just what Star Wars is."

I think that's just marketing.  Keep things fresh and different to keep eyes looking.  I understand the thought.  It's not all about the collectors obsession with it but rather the buying public at large.

Funny, I was at Wal-Mart the weekend after the 4th feeling the LEGO minifig packages when two kids and their dad ran up to the Star Wars figs. Both kids expressed disgust when they saw the same old Theed Soldiers, Battle Droids, Qui-Gons and Obi-Wans on the pegs, with one kid even yelling "This is ALL they have? AGAIN?!?"

I almost feel like the kids always end up the losers in Hasbro's plans even though they supposedly cater to kids. Can you imagine not being able to drive around town hunting for stuff like we do? And not having the knowledge that there will be no product shipping to stores for an entire year?

+1

Packaging changes are really about *SEEMINGLY*  keeping things fresh with the public.  And a superficial thing like a packaging change will do that.  We all walk down the toy aisle and after a while we become used to seeing certain things.  But when new packaging gets introduced it can catch the eye of a potential customer and get them wondering "Hmmm, what's this now?"

Yeah, that's definitely what's going on.  I'd be all about the vintage packaging from now until the end of time.  Out of every cardback they've ever done, it's the only packaging that iconically screams Star Wars.

Kenner never had that problem from 78 until the mid-80s.

Well, a lot of things were different 30 years ago.  Kenner also didn't produce 116 figures in 2-3 years.  I'm with Rob - love the packaging and would be fine with me to just keep that look forever, but I get why they feel they need to change it.  Too bad they just can't find a design more appealing. I have almost no interest in keeping anything new carded now that VC is done.

Yeah, to me OTC was the next best thing... at least it had a Star Wars feel to it.  When they go over the top with the artwork and graphics, I lose interest in the packaging.

And adding to the mix, our friend of the site and forumite Darth Anton also was at the show, and rubbed elbows with Hasbro on his own time, and was willing to send us a synopsis of what they discussed!

Thanks to Anthony for that!

WHere the hell can  you read that?  Well right the hell here!

Found the army building stuff interesting...  Especially DePriest's apparent interest in that niche of the hobby.  Good for him. :)

Nice questions by Anton, and were ones that weren't "more of the same."

I'm wondering if anyone asked them about why the removable phase 2 clone helmets have been so oversized...

I'm hopeful as well.  I think it just might happen. ;)

So, looking back at the show overall (now that we've moved onto CEII), what were you most excited for that was shown/talked about at SDCC?  Granted, there wasn't a lot to go on.  I'm still looking forward to that vintage packaged Slave I that is on the way, although that isn't necessarily "new" news.  It may sound like blasphemy, but at the moment I think I'm most excited for the 6" line.  I'm still a 3 3/4" collector through and through, and will be buying some from each of the waves we've seen, but I can't say there are too many figures that are making me think "wow, I can't wait for that one, amazing".  I'm actually a little excited for some of the OT-based Mission Series/Legends figures.  I know they are 5 POA, and I definitely don't care to see the entire line go that way, but I kind of like them for what they are....and appreciate the more manageable pricepoints.
