I have one cat called Greebo.
He is named after the Greebo in the discworld books (anyone read these?),because he is grey/silver, although he has no scars, still has  both eyes, and is really quite friendly.

I'd imagine you'd like to recant this last statement right about now, 'eh Sarge?  Total bummer about the Vintage collection damage.   :'(  Maybe Angel was just jealous that she never got to play with the cool Vintage stuff too, and wanted to take a crack at it when she finally had the chance...

But like you said, it was really the (blonde) wife's fault in the first place for leaving the collection room door open...   :(

As for me and my (blonde) wife - no pets at the moment, but we both love big dogs and will probably get a couple in a month or two when we finally get a new house (hopefully).  Probably something along the lines of a Lab and/or Retriever.  I love Huskies/Malamuts too, but they're not really built for SoCal so much...

AE- your parakeet is lovely. I have a thing for parakeets, they are hilarious and fantastic pets if they're hand-raised. I'll have one someday (and probably a cockatiel as well).

At the moment, I have one cat, Maggie. She's a clown, and the absolute bright spot in my life.

Interesting, but I don't see much of a family resemblence between the two of them OCB.   :P

Love your parakeet picture AE!  That's too funny with him taking a ride on the Bantha!  Just don't let him drop a turd on the Bantha, or it won't be "mint" anymore.   ;D

All I've got is a 30 gallon fish tank with a bunch of fish in it, as far as pets go.  Hoping to get a dog pretty soon though, but the future fiance is giving me some resistance on that one unfortunately.

Lets just say I never get a moments peace.

Let see,I'll start with the dogs.

Boston:Italian Greyhound,he is black and white, and enjoys playing ''Sock''(Tug-of-war with a sock merged with fetch)
Chalupa:Short Hair Chihuaha, golden brown, very brave and sweet(He and Boston were bought at the same time, and have known each other since birth)
Riley:Tricolor Basset Hound, his colors are black, white, and brown. His poor little tail was broken at birth,so the tip is always bent.I got him for Christmas '96.
Seishirou:Black lab with unknown mix, black with white chest, very hyper,my mom found him at a rest area in GA struggling to live. He's still a puppy, and can be quite annoying.

Ok,time for Cats.
Belladonna:Unknown mix(the mama cat is a whore, plain and simple and belongs to my sisters friend),black and white, runs around the house all day.
Bubba(Intersting name huh?His first owners where asians and named every animal they had bubba, also of note Riley was bought from the same people):Persian, champane, sleeps in the sun(and on my head when I'm sleeping)
Peggy:Tabby, greenish grey and black, she is very old and blind. My grandparents owned this cat if that tells you anything.

And last but not least...The Birds!
Boomer:African Grey, very intellegent and to my delight knows star wars phrases!(I was walking by the bird room one day and I heard ''No Luke I am your Father, followed by a scream)
Goosey:Cocatoo,speaks chinese and says hello.

Yep,I live in a zoo.

Here is the bunny my wife and I bought a few days ago. We are yet to name him though. I figure I'll wait to see his character come through before gracing him with a name.

I also have 33 fish, including 31 neon Tetras, 1 Pleco, and 1 Bubble Eye. I'm going to try to take some pictures of them soon.

Scott, around 3 the cat and the child reach a state of detente.  Cat is cautious, child marginally interested in petting rather than pure harassment.

1 cat, name is Kmir.  We seem to be feeding a stray now too, so maybe 2 soon. ::)

As of right now I don't have any pets since my parents won't allow me to have any pets while I'm living with them.  In the past when I was younger I had:
My dog Shadower who was a black labador and died in 1995-96. :'(
Two hamsters (both died after a few months) Snowball and Furball (I think)
A rat

In high school I made money raising farm animals like Beef Steers and Lambs and selling them at acutions.
Three steers names were:Bart, Manica (Pyscho, Saddam, Mabbus and a couple of other names) and the last one Tar
I only named one of my lambs, Lambert.

Glad to hear Gracie's recovering well Robb!  Never thought I'd say it, but cute rat!

Good luck with those goldfish Scott!  Ping pong ball in the goldfish bowl at the carnival?!   :-*   :P

We're moving next month, so I'll at least get the 20 gallon fish tank set up again pretty soon.  Then, once we're settled, we'll look into whether we're going to have any dogs or not...

That's great news Robb!  Glad to hear your Gracie is doing well.  My four cats are just like our babies, and it's so stressful and depressing when they're not doing well like that.  One of our cats almost died because it swallowed part of a cat toy.  It cost $800 to have this piece of rubber removed from his stomach (surgically).  He's all good now, but that whole moment scared the hell out of my wife and I.

Here's a picture of the cat I'm talking about (see below).  He hopped into our dryer right after it stopped.  He does that all the time.

Shirley and I had to put down one of dogs a few days ago. Her name was BooBoo. She 16 or 17 years old.
Blind with cataracts, deaf and she couldn't control herself anymore when it came to going to the bathroom, if you know what I mean.

She was about the most loving animal I ever had.. :'(

Then just before that we lost one of cats. He got out
accidentally. Haven't seen him since. I'm hoping he comes back as the song says... :-*

Title: Official Pet/Animal Thread
Post by: Brian on March 26, 2004, 03:47 PM
I could have sworn that I have seen a thread like this here before, but for some reason I couldn't find it.  I'm sorry if I am duplicating...

Anyways, how many of you out there are pet owners, or would like to be some day?  Personally, I have always been an animal person.  I grew up on a farm, and aside from the "livestock" we have had a number of dogs and cats over the years as well.  My wife and I are both dog people, and really have a soft spot for them.  We are the proud owners of a now 4-year old Beagle.  We got him when he was six weeks old, which was about 6 months or so before we got married as well.  I have always been really fond of our dogs over the years, but we have never been so attached to an animal before.  I personally have never had a house dog before (parents wouldn't let us growing up), but our beagle pretty much has the run of the house.  The fact that I have been working at home now for a little while has made it even worse, as he is right by my side each minute of the day...and follow me everywhere.  We don't have any children yet, but he is pretty much our kid...we treat him that way it seems, and would never want anything bad to happen to him.

Anyways, any other pet owners out there....or just pet/animal people?  Lets hear about your furry, feathery, or fishy friends (or whatever else you might have). :)

Heck, no worries at all Brian!   ;)

Beagles are cool.  We had one for many years when I was a kid...  Patty's been wanting to get a puppy since we moved and actually just brought it up again yesterday, but since we don't really have a yard, I'd rather wait.  Don't want a puppy terrorizing the interior of the new place.  Plus, I don't want to clean up dog $h!t.   :P

Still haven't gotten the aquarium out of storage yet, but hopefully will soon, so I can at least say we have some pet fish!   :-\

We are currently up to 2 small dogs.

A male pug who's name is Gramps but is refered to by the wife as Gram and commonly refered to, by me, as Chubs, since he could stand to lose a pound or two.

A female boston terrier/pug mix that has a noticeable underbite named Emy but I like to call her Dingy, I guess just because it sounds funny. And she'll actually come to either name now.  ;D

Riley: Basset Hound, been with us since Christmas 96.

Boston: Italian Greyhound, has been with us since October 1999

Chaluppa: Chihuahuah (it's truely an enigma to spell), we got him along with Boston.

Sei-Kun: Black Lab mix, rescued from a Rest Area in Gainesville Georgia in October 2002.

Bubbah: Persian Cat, has been living with us since 1995 (named by his former Chinese owners...)

Boomer: African Grey (Bird), has been with us since December 2002

Goosey: Kocatoo (Tropical Bird), has been annoying the hell out of us with squaks since 1992/93?

I'll try to find some pictures in a little bit.

Such is the Circle of Life; as one JDer gets a new pet, another loses one.

One of my Brown Anoles passed away.  I checked the cage to add water to the dish this morning as I always do, and I found Stumpy the Lizard rigored belly up in the corner (looks like the crickets in the cage already started in on him too... :-X)

Thus, he was removed from the terrarium and he received a proper "Burial at Sea" before I left for work.  Godspeed, Stumpy the Lizard.  You're in a better place now...  :'(

Now, I'm down to just one House Gecko (Spidey).  I might have to hit PetCo this weekend and buy him a new friend... maybe a Green Anole this time?

Our 3rd attempt at a fish (this time a Beta) was also buried at Sea last weekend...RIP Jeff Fish 2

JediMAX was told Jeff Fish went to find his dad just like Nemo

He lasted quite a while, a good three months, so we may get another one in a couple of days

I'm sorry for your loss.  I've got two leopard geckoes and while they now live with my girlfriend's parents, I don't look foward to the sad day(s) of their passing.

As for fish, the girlfriend and I tried - but lost 3 sets of fish and then packed it up and threw the tank in the closet.

At least the dogs are still alive.

Just like Finding Nemo.  That's funny!   ;D

We have a couple "pet" lizards as well.  Kinda.  They live right outside the front of our house, but spend almost the entire day sunbathing on our front porch steps.  It's been going on routinely for several months, so we've basically adopted them as pets now.  Don't even have to feed or care for them at all!   8)

Lotsa squirrels and rabbits hangin' out by our pad too...

Be wary of rabbits a squirrels.  Cute they may be, but bloody damaging too.  Squirrels are notoriously sneaky.  Check your roof line.

3 months is a rather short life span for a betta actually. my last one just died a few months ago, but i had it (could never tell if it was a male or female) for almost 5 years...

right now i have no pets, except for the dust bunnies under the bed  :-\

Title: Re: Do You Have Pets?

Bettas actually take water changes better than most fish- my guess is he got fin rot or ick.  They have a labyrinth breathing system, so they aren't as prone to having problems w/ water changes like ordinary fish.
I used to keep bettas when I was in college- one lasted 3 years- even flew home w/ me on some extended vacations.  I only had maybe one or two ever die that quickly and it was some sot of disease that got them- suddenly they are swimming sideways or something.
Anyway, I don't have fish now, I have a cat- Chloe, and she looks like the cat from Pet Semetary- or so I'm told.  I had water turtle named Yoda, but I gave him away around 2 years ago when I got divorced and became a single mom- too much work to keep up his tank and take care of my son.
I'll get a dog when Aidan is older, but that will be a few years.

We have an ever-annoying little mutt--a poodle/Lasa/Cocker Spaniel mix. He is completely untrainable. He prefers to be dirty. He likes to hump and tear apart his "indestructable" bed. Ick. He will eat anything he thinks is food...even when it's not. The harder I try to restrain him with his leash, the harder he will pull the opposite way. The frequency of his misdeeds is only outnumbered by the frequency of his gastrointestinal emissions. Really. He and our 10-month old daughter have formed an alliance bent on driving me and my wife bonkers. While one is at rest, the other invariably cries/whines/gets into trouble. I miss having cats.

jokabofe, that's a really great photo. :) Looks a lot like a cat I used to have.

My mom just put our 16-year-old cat to sleep today. She's been pissing on the carpet for a couple months now, and I'm sure most of you know how badly cat piss stinks.

This is now officially the Worst ******* Day of My Life. I woke up late for work today, was stuck there for eleven hours, I found out my girlfriend is ******* Lord-knows-how-many other guys, my cat's now dead, and I have a cold. Oh, and my cable and internet won't be set up until Sept. 8th.

At least I'm moving tomorrow, and I found some new VOTC tonight, so I'm just going to go blast some Cure, smoke cigarettes, and drink a lot of beer.

We got another one too Dale...  She just got home from her spaying today.  She has no tail and looks silly.

The other two have adapted...  Tarkin plays with her, but Chaos just tolerates her.

Oddly enough, not having a tail has the new cat fascinated by everyone WITH a tail.  So she attacks the tails of the other cats and Yellow Dog as well.

Our cat, Tiger, passed away recently. It was really hard for the family, my mom especially - but we've since adopted a kin of Tiger's (they are brother's or CC is Tiger's nephew or something). The two are really polar opposite, despite their relation. His name is CC - we don't know what CC stands for, but we're guessing 'Coward Cat'... Tiger got all the balls in the family, that's for sure.

Here's a pic of him napping, which is pretty much all he ever does...

That's an adorable kitten!!!! So cute and photogenic!!!!

I miss my cats and dog, they're back home with moms. A black and white cat that I saved from the access road of the busiest highway in Austin. And a mutli colored cat that got from a rescue group. They are palsy walsies!!!

And then my dog which is a pit bull mutt, my mom found on the street. It jsut began to follow her, and no matter how she tried to shoosh it away, it wouldn't move. So she called me and I drove over to where the street she was at, and let het take my suv home, while I walked the dog to our vets, 20 blocks away. It wouldn't get in, and I wasn't about to pick up an unknown pit bull. Got checked out and given his shots and we brought him home. I mean he would have been put down at the pound, there are so many Pit Bull mixes, its sad. Anyhow his name is Diablo!!!!

They all get along and keep my moms entertained!!!! Especially those crazy, get into everything, cats!!!

He's got an odd shape, he's short/stout. He is big boned, but he's also got short legs.

He was beaten up by his previous owners, his tail was broken, so the tail is a little shorter than most cats - which is pretty funny, but in an "awww  :'(" kind of way.

He's a chubby shorty, but nothin wrong with that!

Our pet family grew as well...  A new cat who doesn't have a tail, which is
a bit of an enigma since it wasn't severed, she just was born without one
but she's not a manx so it's weird.

I call her little cat, just because she's little and I wasn't afforded the opportunity
to name her a cool Star Wars name...  Her official name is Bobcat though.

So my cat, Tarkin (bottom photo) has taken to stealing money again.  He'd given this habit up a while ago, but he's back to it.  Loose change on the table is the victim, but he's smart and only takes quarters (or those new dollar coins).

Does anyone have a cat that does that?  He leaves it at my bedroom door at night too, or just strewn throughout the house, almost like a little path he has taken giving money away to...  well...  nobody in particular.

I'm being evaluated for MS and my hubby is recovering from back surgery.  The poor dog was spending her days in her little cage.  The people who took her plan to spoil her to death (literally and figuratively).  I know it was best for Hannah-Banana, but it was so hard to watch her go :-\

But now after a few months he's fatter than ever and has a great looking coat of fur... still missing an eye though.   :)

Cute puppy Jaybird.

Just thought I'd post a semi-cute Bailey story.  About two weeks ago she came in the house at about 6:30 in the morning (I leave the back door open for her so she can go out on nights I don't have an alert the next day) and she hopped up on the bed meowing like crazy.

I gave her a little ear scratching and rolled over to go back to sleep when I noticed she had brought me a present....a snake!  It was a garter snake about 1.5 to 2 ft long and STILL ALIVE!  Needless to say I didn't need coffee to wake up that morning!  :o

I had a nice long chat with Bailey telling her I appreciated the gesture, but please....no more live snakes in the bed!  :)

Awww. Isn't that cute? :)

Here's a few pictures of my best buddy. His name is Blizzard he is half Australian Sheppard and half Border Collie.

He has never been a big fan of bath time and normally will jump right out of his little tub the second he is left alone, but for some reason on this day when my dad went inside to get some more soap he just sat there for a good 5-10 minutes until my dad came back.

Awhile back we came home and found that Blizzard had got up onto the couch wedged himslef in between two cushions and decided to take a nap.

Me and my Brother discovered a family of Raccoons in one of our trees one night, Blizzard wanted to come outside too.

UPDATE:

Mittens
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a323/Platinum_Princess/Animals/animals005.jpg)

We actually had to put this one down just recently due to old age (he was probably 15 years old) but also due to kidney and renal failure.  My parents had him creamated and his urn sits in the cureo cabinet where he can watch over everybody.  It was a tough thing to hear from around 3,000 miles away over the phone but I actually more or less knew it would happen eventually.

RIP Mittens

Erika -- I'm sorry to hear about Mittens :(.  That is such a hard decision to make -- even when you know its then best for them.

Ryan -- I bet Blizzard keeps you guys hopping :).  We used to have a Australian Shepard/Blue Heeler mix.  She ALWAYS wanted to have something to do.  She was forever "herding" us and the other dogs around the house.

Rob -- your dogs are a hoot -- are they Boston Terriers?  Do they snore and snort and snot and snuffle?  Our pug used to make so much noise -- but she was so funny. :)

iFett -- Maggie is the sweetest little thing!  I miss having a dog(s) around.  We just need to wait until the kids get a little bigger.......

I love looking at everyone's pet pics -- please keep them coming!

They are.  The older one is about 3 and a half and the younger one is a little over two now.  With the short noses they end up snorting a lot whenever they choke themselves on the leashes... and at other times.  When they drink too much water they throw it back up... and the little one still has potty-training issues and I'm running out of ideas (thank God for concrete floors).  But they're phenomenal dogs, are unbelievably sweet (to people, not necessarily to other dogs...).  We love them to death.  There are a bunch of older pictures a page or two ago if you didn't see them already from when the little one was really little.

Sounds like pugs.  Ours could pretty much care less about other small dogs, but get them around a big dog and they would turn into Cujo.  They didn't care.

Yeah, they're very territorial.  The older one was vicious when she was younger but now can generally play nice with other dogs to the point where if she gets into it with one, it probably isn't her that started it.

The little one bites every dog he gets close to right on the nose and doesn't let go - I dont' know why and he's absolutely not intimidated by dogs of any size or variety - and he only weighs about 18 pounds...  I'm thinking about seeing if I can find a muzzle that would fit him just so I can take him to the park.  But that would ruin his day because all he does is fetch fetch fetch and he wouldn't be able to.  Yet he plays fantastically all day and night with our other dog and my girlfriend's parent's dogs back home... just get him around a dog that he doesn't know and he's a terror.  He's never done anything like that to people though, he's a little angel otherwise.

3 cats(possum 16, Milon 6, Dusty 4), 50 gallon aquarium with 12 fish, 60 Gallon aquarium with 17 fish, 30 gallon aquarium with 19 fish/6 shrimp, 20 gallon aquarium with 6 fish, 2 gallon aquarium with 1 fish, 20 gallon terrarium with 2 lizards, 40 gallon terrarium with 1 lizard, 10 gallon terrarium with 2 poison dart frogs, 10 gallon terrarium with 5 lizards, 2 rats(peanut, patches) in cage, and 1 rabbit(Cocoa) in large enclosure.

Oh, and 4 lizards outside around the house. See them often enough I know who's who. Well, I guess they don't count since they live on the walls and catch their own grub.

Have a significant pet bill monthly :P

But, somehow am able to keep house smelling nice/not like pet store.

Let's see if I have this correct...
3 cats
55 fish
6 shrimp
8 lizards
2 poison dart frogs
2 rats
1 rabbit
plus 4 "outside" lizards

That is, without a doubt, a lot of pets.   :o

Post by: Darth Slothus on April 6, 2006, 02:06 PM
Well, I took it out of the context that... a pet is a pet no matter the size. If you care for(responsible to) it's wellfare than I guess that's why I listed those. I guess the outside lizards kind of count? If I don't water the fauna then their prey leaves then the lizards move to another home or back across the street to the desert?

Great pics everyone, always nice to see people's pets, they are all quite cute.  I grew up with dogs my whole life, and my wife and I have had our pet beagle for going on six years now.  He is definitely part of our family, we basically treat him like he was our kid.  He's far too spoiled I'm guessing.  I don't know what we'd do without him though.  I'll have to see if I can get a picture posted sometime.

They all get along except Bailey....she was so used to being the only pet for the first three years of her life and she's not too fond of the dogs.  Roscoe doesn't help matters much since he's kind of high-strung and barks at her a lot.

Oh well....they'll get used to eachother over time.

My mom has some newborn kittens at her house if anyone's in the Pensacola area in about seven weeks and wants one. Or two. Or four.

I was so sorry to see the posts from people who have recently lost pets.
I lost three of my cats in 2005, one to a heart condition, one to old age, one to old age and kidney failure. And he wasn't a pet, but my dad died last week. So, I can truly sympathize on the loss of your loved ones, furry or not.

Deanna and Reid, I am so sorry to hear about your parrot and your dog. It really sucks to lose pets. I feel I know how it feels more than anyone. Last year, I rescued a newt from a pond at the park. He was as good as dead, huge open wound across his chest, bruises everywhere, but I nursed him back to health. He was a great pet, so much personality. Pets really are like kids to me as weird as it may sound. Then, a few months later, I went to a wedding across the country, and left him with a 'professional' sitter. I got back, and there had been a heat spell. And the sitter neglected to do ******* anything, didnt turn up the A/C, anything. She couldve saved him, but after all I had done for him, all Id been through with him, he was dead. And that sucked!!! So once again, I am very, very sorry, and always sad to hear about it when others lose pets of their own.

My pet population currently consist of the family dog (a brainless beage named Nutmeg, her barking at flies drives us all nuts!), the extremely fat family cat with cowprints on his fur named Toby, the family cat we hardly ever see because shes so damn scared of everything named Cookie.

MY pets, that are MINE and not the family's are a beautiful bearded dragon named Irwin (hes got the best personality, he is something else!) whos still trying to grasp the POTF2 Action Collection Dewback being displayed right next to his cage for him to talk to. I also have two hissing cockroaches, I like them a lot, theyre actually great pets! I also had a great praying mantis named Kitik who passed away a couple months ago,who laid four eggsacs before she went! Im hoping they hatch soon, thatll be very cool. 600+ babies to name. Kitik, Jr., Kitik, Jr., Kitik, Jr., Kitik, Jr., Kitik, Jr.

I love having pets, they are really great to have around. Cool thread!

Today we made the difficult decision to put our beloved Rottweiler, Hannah, down because the pain she was in with her battle with bone cancer.  She was a great, loyal friend who could put a smile on my face even if I was having the worst day ever, just by looking at me and wagging her nub of a tail.  Some great things about her that I will never forget:

-How excited she got at meal time. (I swear if she could speak English she would tell people she never ate!)
-How she would bark whenever she heard a doorbell.
-How she scared the living **** out of the pizza delivery guy by getting to the front door before me.  (I think he jumped about 10 feet backwards)
-How loving and gentle she was with children...especially babies.
-How she would let you know you were not done petting her.
-How much she enjoyed our new yard for the last year of her life.

I will miss her greatly.

Sorry Matt...  My brother put his cat down the other day because of an illness they couldn't explain...

We had a cat with bone cancer.  I hand fed him lunchmeat the last couple weeks of his life.  He was just in pain to touch him and had to be put down I recall...  It was the right thing to do even though it hurt.  I totally know how you're feeling...

I'm living with 4 cats and a dog right now.  It's a zoo but they're all important parts of the family.

I'm sorry to hear about Hannah, Matt.  We've had to put down a dog before and it's a tough thing to do, even when you know it's the best thing for them.  It sounds like she had a loving home and had a good life -- what more could a dog ask for? :)

Thanks y'all....it's been a tough couple of days, but we are actually looking at adopting another Rottie from a rescue organization here in Colorado.  Hannah was sort of a rescue dog herself (if my wife did not take her from her previous owners when she purchased their house, she was going to have to go to a shelter), so we think it's a good way to honor her.

Her ashes came home yesterday along with a clay paw-print which we will put next to her brother Roscoe's.  I think in the spring, I'll bury her ashes in the yard in a spot where she liked to lay and then bark at anyone walking up the other side of the road behind us.   :)

Today we welcomed Tia, a rescued Rottweiler mix into our home.  Already she and Baker (our Malamute) have been playing and getting along well...and even our cat Bailey has hung out in our media room to watch football.  I knew they would get along, but I didn't realize it woud be in the first few hours!

We adopted her from Rottie Aid. (http://www.rottieaid.org)

Just because I don't think we can have enough dogs in the house.  Yesterday we brought home a new puppy!  She's a purebred rottweiler and was whelped 22 January.  She's a little ball of energy and curiosity always trying to check out her new big brother that 9 and a half year old Malamute, Baker and her 4 year old rottie/mix sister, Tia.

Needless to say I slept about two hours last night with trips out to the yard...and on the floor next to her crate since it was her first night away from her litter.

Life is awesome.   ;D

I have two cats and three rats.

Just wanted to get on here and advocate having rats as pets. My wife had them as a girl and wanted them now. I was somewhat indifferent because I had hamsters/gerbils as a kid and they weren't so much pets as "look ats". However, rats are defineately pets. They are friendly, have their own personalities, want your attention. They are really awesome.

Not a good enough hiding spot to avoid bath time!

It will be funny when she thinks that she is still small enough to hide under there.

Our boxer (who I miss dearly) would hide under the coffee table is she was in trouble as a puppy.  As she grew her perception of her size was a little off.  She would hit the table going full blast and knock everything off of it.  She finally trained us to stop putting things on the table.

Shortly after our move, we noticed one of our dogs looking significantly inflated.  She had blown up...  She looked like she was about to burst.  We didn't know what was going on so we went to the emergency vet.

$200 worth of x-rays later, we found out that she'd gotten into a bag of dog food that we didn't realize was on the ground.

She's fine.  She threw up all day and had the runs into the next, but she's completely back to normal.  The other one was a little puffed up, but not as bad.  For all the trouble, at least we got this (now) amusing x-ray out of it.  You can see her stomach completely blown up with food.

My dog just had a six pound tumor removed in the last couple weeks.  She went from being fairly lethargic to acting like a puppy again.  Nothing serious, just fatty, and so she's runnin' around being a spoiled ******* now.

My cats are all hating the heat...  We're concerned on Tarkin's health right now, as he's getting older and he had what seemed like a disoriented/dizzy spell the other day, and our vet said it could be his kidneys.  So now I'm in a bit of a funk over that.  He's not seen the vet yet, but once the dog's settled here, we're going to be taking him.

Jesse, I hope everything works out okay.

Glad to hear she's ok, Rob!

Thanks Matt.

For the record, if your (your as in, anyone's) dog over-eats it's probably a good idea to get them looked at.  Bad things can happen if the food hardens in their stomachs.  It can be very serious and even fatal.
Title: Re: Do You Have Pets?
Post by: Jesse James on August 19, 2009, 05:25 AM
Indeed on overeating...  Especially with dogs.  They're instinct is sometimes to eat till they're ill because of food not being readily available to them, or so I hear.  Why cats don't do that, I don't know, but I've heard a lot of dogs will.  I think my lab would considering how she begs 24/7.

And thanks Rob...  I'm concerned.  If it's not one thing it's another it seems, and this is bothering me greatly.

Rob - glad to hear that the pups are okay - those little rascals can get into a lot of trouble and cause a world of worry.

Jesse - sorry to hear about Tarkin.  I remember how hard it was when Hannah, my pug started getting older and things started going wrong with her little by little.  You worry over them and feel so bad for them.

When Hannah and her litter-mate Dudley were still quite small, my mom came to visit with Dudley.  I also had a black lab at the time who are gravy train.  We go to missing Dudley and found him buried deep inside the bag of Brownie's food.  We laughed and thought nothing of it and took the pups to a pet supply store.  My mom held the puppies in her lap on the short ride there.  Needless to say, Dudley started getting sick all over my mom and Hannah.  The thing is, when a dog eats Gravy Train dry, and then throws it back up, it makes gravy. :o

Yesterday, we had to let our old boy Baker go.  He was old for an Alaskan Malamute (12 and a half years) but was always so playful and fun.  He was a true pack leader...we would take him to the dog park, and all the other dogs would follow him around, truly an amazing sight to see!

The past couple of days he could not make it up the stairs (he's had arthritis for a while but he could still get around), and then he just stopped eating.  Yesterday afternoon, you could just see him fading away, so we made the tough decision to take him to the vet and end his suffering.

I'm going to miss him.

So this isn't my pet, per se, but rather a story about my neighbor's pet.  I just thought this was a nice and maybe sorta positive "holiday" story kind of thing.

Anyway, so my neighbors have lived next to my family's property for years, since I was maybe 7 actually, so I've known them for a long time.  They have two cats, one of which they'd let roam during the day and the other one kept inside.  Don't ask why one roamed and one didn't...  I have no clue.

Anyway, the roamer was Eddie...  Eddie was pretty cool.  Dark brown and tan striping.  Pretty neat.  A long thick tail (short haired but his tail was like a giang pipe cleaner).  He was kind of bad but he'd come over and have some cat nip (grow my own) and he'd just hang out.  He'd bite if you didn't watch him but he was ok.

Anyway, one day, mid-June this year, he didn't come home when they called him...  On rare occassion, he wouldn't come home and would get locked out for the night, but it didn't happen often and he was always there next day.  Not this time though.

This time, he didn't come home the next day... or the next.  Or the next week, or the next month, and so on.

We assumed the worst ultimately...  My road's bad, there are neighbors around who will kill cats on sight, and if it's not those two man-made things, it's coyotes/other predators that will get the cats that roam.  For that reason I don't let any of mine roam anywhere but different strokes for different folks I guess.

Anyway, it sort of upset me that Eddie was gone...  They'd gotten him when I got Chaos and Tarkin (my oldest 2 cats) pretty much, and so the three grew up together when I'd tether mine out on the clothes line, and I was just used to Eddie and giving him some nip and stuff, watching him come trotting down the property line, or running out of the woods like a maniac.  He was a cool cat and I was bummed.

Well, flash forward about 6 months to this week...  My neighbor's son is home from France where he lives with his family, and they're walking up on the porch with his stuff after picking him up from the airport.  They see a cat on their backporch...  And upon closer inspection.  It's Eddie.

Yes.  Eddie was gone for 6 months somewhere, and then came home.

Which is great of course.  I've had a ******, well, year really, haha.  But this was a nice thing to brighten my year a little bit and right at the holidays.  :)  He's not my cat, but he's a cat I cared about, and he didn't deserve to die alone somewhere without his people to care for him.

But now...

Where has he been for 6 months?

Does he now Summer in Florida and only come back to visit relatives at the holidays?

Did he go on a roadtrip to White Castle?

Did he join Occupy Wall St.?

Was he performing covert ops overseas?

Was he part of SEAL Team Six?

Was he performing vigilante Dog Beatings?

Was he moderating debates?

If I could attach a camera to him, I'd really like to see where he went.

Personally, I'm theorizing he was picked up by someone local who thought he was a stray, and kept him.  He's pretty friendly (till he decides he's had enough), so he'd be easily caught and brought in.  Trapped easily with cat food too.  He apparantly doesn't look unhealthy or anything.

From what I've heard though, he's not wild about going out now, and when he is out he only wants to be near them and not wander the property line or go up into the woods and stuff.

Still...  It's a nice thing to have him back.  I just hope he's not breaking the heart of another family that feel they've lost him at the holidays.

Pain in the butt week. Two Mondays ago our one rat had a tumor removed in his leg. But it was wrapped around his nerve so he lost some use of the foot. He must have caught it on something because he started bleeding bad. We have him in a wrap and it's getting better/not bleeding quite as often, but now that it's healed some it looks like the bone is sticking out of his toe. Brought him to the vet yesterday and they took x rays. the last two bone is his one toe are gone. We and the vet are concerned he'll keep walking weird on it and ripping it open so we think we are going to have his leg removed. Pain in the butt.

We do have the best vet ever though. We've loved her ever since we started bringing our animals there.
$50 to verify tumor (office visit price)
About $500 to have tumor removed and sent in for analysis.
$0 for trip to vet hour and a half after they closed to look at bleeding. Vet tech was there, he left whenever they left, went home and made a leather booty for our rat.
$40 next morning but that was for needles and IV to give rat at home from.
$0 for visit yesterday to look at bone sticking out and x rays.
And $0 for the leg removal if we do it. She's just doing it as a part of the tumor surgery since it didn't work out as we had hoped.

Dude, sorry to hear about that.

So my dog has a habit of jumping the fence if she doesn't get to come back in the house when SHE wants to. I look out back to see where she is and there is nothing in sight. I head out the garage door to get in the Jeep and go find her.

She offered to drive.

As someone who has had to put three dogs to sleep in the last 5 years, all i can say is they will let you know when it is time.

My advice is to not think about it today....just enjoy them being with you.

I'm really sorry to hear about Tarkin, Jesse. He sounds like he was a great cat. Unfortunately I totally know your pain.

Yesterday we had to put down our 14 year old Aussie/Border Collie mix, Blizzard. He was my first dog. I know he was old and lived a good long life, but it really sucks to see him go. He died in my arms at the vet yesterday morning. I was a wreck all day.  :'(

He died in your arms?  Oh man, that must have been tough.  Sorry Ryan.

Yeah, I held him while they put the shot in. I hadn't cried so much in a really long time.

I held him in my lap the whole hour long car ride home the day we got him 14 years ago. And I used to pick him up and hold him all the time so I guess it was only fitting that I held him for his last adventure.

Ryan - sorry to hear about Blizzard - it is so hard to lose a dog.  I held my pug Misty when the vet gave her the shot too.  It was hard but it was nice too - I didn't want her last moments to be in fear.  Instead - she was was cozy and happy.  Take comfort in the fact that you made it easier on him.  It will get better with time.

Our one rat Lenny has been on drugs to help his breathing for about a month. Yesterday he was not eating and looking bad. At about 10 p.m. he was barely moving and when he did it was like he was bouncing around. So we made the trip to the emergency vet. By the time we were filling out the paperwork he died in his cage. Can't imagine suffocating to death. Poor guy. At least now he can play with his sisters that went before him.

Miss ya Lenny.

Wow Nick!  Your cat has lived a long life   :)  Very cool

Wish I still had a pic somewhere in here of my pup Maggie when she was tiny.  She's going on 6 or 7 now and is having some hip problems...at home, but not on her walks.  Need to get that checked out me thinks.  She's an indoor dog and pretty much sleeps all day so I'm thinking she just lays on it too long.

Never thought she'd grow to be 125lb dog, but she's a great security system!!

So my dog wound up tearing a ligiment in her knee a little while ago and took me time to find a vet through the shelter I got her at who wouldn't charge a ton of cash.  She's having surgery this morning and will be restricted to the lower level of my house for 6 weeks....and she has to wear the cone of shame.  Not sure how well that's going to fly but looking forward to her recovery.

Sorry to hear that.  My dog tore her ACL at the end of May and $2000 later, she's better.  It sucked because she is a really, really active dog and with some of the "cooler" days we've had lately have really bothered her. But all in all, she's moving around full throttle again.  Here she is when I picked her up from the vet.

Forgive my dirty carpet, but this will soon be replaced.  My dog lives in my lower level while I'm at work.

Here she is almost fresh out of surgery.  She cries.....and I have 6 weeks to put up with this.  Not complaining, but she hates the cone and so do I, but it's neccessary.

Very good of you to take them in Brad...

I've got 3 feral kittens in my back yard that I'd LIKE to pick up and get fixed and re-release them.  I've got a neighbor bitching about it, but what am I gonna do ya know?  Their mother had them and they're not leaving because we feed a feral we did catch/release so she has steady food.  So they're sticking to what they know which is my shed out back.  I was set to tear it down this Summer and left it because of these 3 monkeys.  Wish I could catch them all at one time.

I'm worried I catch one or two and the third one freaks and leaves.

Jesse - you're so sweet.  We are in a different situation.  We live in a subdivision and our jackhole neighbor across the street has always let his cats run free.  The big male prefers to spend the last 8 years hanging out in the flowerbeds in our backyard killing birds and launching sneak attack the kids and the dog.  A couple of years ago a stray female came along and they have produced about 5 litters.  Guess where they like to live?  In everybody's yard but the owners.  They are all feral and nasty.  We spoke to our neighbor and they basically said they could give a crap about their cat - they only got it for the kids - and the kids are older and don't care anymore.  He said they put scraps out for the cats and he would be more than happy to put some anti-freeze in with them.  ::)  The first summer a litter appeared a few of us got traps from the animal shelter and got most of them - but they are like rats - they are everywhere and they are aggressive.  They get in our (and our neighbors) garages and one of the little dumbasses jumped on our nextdoor neighbors grill while he was grilling. It just pisses me off that people think it's okay to just let their cats roam free - but we take responsibilty with our dog and had him neutered and keep him in the house, fence or on leash.

My cat died last nite. Choked to death, I think. I heard a gag noise. He did get hairballs now and then, never had trouble passing them.  He seemed just finer hours earlier.

Had two older cats (16 and 15) die around this time last year, one I had the vet put down. I'm done with pets for awhile. I'm obviously not responsible enough to handle them and I can't take the loss.  :(

I'm sorry scockery, man that's tough.

He may have had an aneurism though too...  My cat some years ago collapsed and twitched making a gagging type sound and his eyes rolled back.  My brother tried clearing his throat as we thought he choked, and then my brother who was an EMT at the time did a type of CPR on him but he was gone.  We took him to the emergency pet hospital and they let us knwo he'd died of an aneurism and it was pretty much instantaneous.

Cats usually have a reflex to get hairballs up and don't choke on them, as I understand it.

Losing a pet sucks, and I really feel for you.  I was tearing up the other day about my cat I lost just recently.  I'm making a mold for a headstone for where I buried him and it was hard just to make the mold box without starting to lose it.

Today I put down my cat Chaos.

She was 16.  She'd spent almost half my life with me.  She was a beautiful calico, with peach, grey, and white fur.  She had one solid grey paw and for some reason she liked to use it as her weapon if she needed to.  She was so beautiful, when she was young my mother took her to walk in a pet parade and she won first place in it.  She had tons of personality, and always let you know if she was happy, or sad, or angry.

My father actually brought her home one day from work...  A week later, I went and got Tarkin who passed away a short time ago.  They're buried together in my back yard.  They liked to be tied out there and relax or play.  They're back where the wild catnip grows too, which they loved.  They were very close.

She had been losing weight...  When I took her to the vet, he said she had a liver disease older cats get, but we could maybe control it.  I tried, but it hasn't been a week even and her kidneys began shutting down over the weekend.  She stopped eating, and drinking then.  She spent last night with me in bed, looking out the window, yowling now and again looking at nothing outside that I could see.  She never did anything like that before.

She spent a few hours outside this morning.  It's where she wanted to be.  Then my family took her to the vet, brought her home, and buried her.  I have an Indiana Jones German I'm burying with her...  they'd been on the floor because things were a mess while I did work in the house, and this random pile of figures wound up there.  When I wasn't home on weekends, she would go into the room, and walk around with the Indy Germans in her mouth yowling and leaving a trail of just them to my bedroom and my collection room till I got home.  I'm going to leave her one under her stone I'm going to make her.

She was an amazing cat.  I'd never had one like her at all.

I want to first thank everyone again, for your kind words...  But unfortunately things have only gotten worse.

I worked this weekend to catch up on some things and was at my girlfriend's place, and was told Friday evening that earlier that day my family had to put my dog down as well.  Her name was Samantha, a Yellow Lab I'd had since shortly after my childhood dog (A black lab named Shena) had passed away.

Sam was older, much like Chaos...  She was very friendly, and big and yellow.  I sort of nicknamed her Yellow Dog after the dog from Funny Farm...  She never left the yard though, unless she was walking with you.  Otherwise she stayed put and was just a great companion, very obedient...  Never hunted though, haha.  My father hated that, but loved her tremendously.

The mail lady even was crying Friday when she stopped...  Sam was her favorite on the route.  I found out Friday evening, went to bed, and struggled through the rest of my weekend.  I'm honestly just emotionally drained at the moment, and exhausted.

Sam fell a couple times Friday...  She's been getting shakey, and the heat this year's really affected her for some reason, more than any year prior.  Friday she fell though, and was confused...  The vet said her eyesight was almost completely gone at this point, and she had a respiratory problem he couldn't fix on top of everything, and her quality of life just wasn't there now...  I'm just upset I wasn't home to help my poor parents dig her grave, as she was every bit theirs as she was mine, and it really was hard on them too.

I appreciate everyone's kind things and thoughts they've shared.  I needed to just think about them out loud, to help me deal with the losses.  Thanks everyone.

Very sad news. My sympathies.

The one cat I put down a year and half ago was a link to lost times, not all good, but places and people I'll never see again. I took her across country with me when I moved. I still remember her poking her head out the blinds of a second story Econo-Lodge motel room. I'd gone to get something to eat...I didn't tell the clerk I had a cat with me, but no one noticed. Heh.

Had to put down our Great Dane, Buffy, yesterday after 13 years.  She was the only dog I ever owned and probably will be the last.  I don't think I could go through the last 3-4 months again with another dog.  It's just too hard.  For a big dog, she really did not have any major health issues.  It just ended up being her size that did her in.  The hips and knees just couldn't support her any more.  And considering that most Danes I've known or read about only live 7-9 years, she had a full life for sure.  I will definitely miss her...

Sorry to hear about your Great Dane IAS.

We had a scare these past two weeks with our older Boston, Emerson.  She got into a trash can while I was out of town (dog sitter left the bathroom door open, against instructions) and the dog ate a bunch of trash.

She was distended and threw up a few times, but otherwise seemed okay and the dog sitter who didn't want to mention there were tampons in the trash can only told me that she may have eaten some paper towels.  So I waited until Wednesday when suddenly she was trying to take a crap and nothing came out.  Off to the vet, x-rays show possible blockage.  Next day she passes a tampon, I'm thinking everything is good now, but she's not eating and not getting her energy back.

Another x-ray shows another blockage, before you know it I'm at an emergency vet getting an ultrasound which shows a "linear foreign body" (fancy word for string) that is causing her small intestine to bunch up on itself.  The string is acting like a saw and they basically tell me that it's only a matter of time before it perforates her intestine and she dies (they felt like it was hours, not days).  On top of that there was a blockage of some sort in her stomach that wasn't moving into her GI tract (hence throwing up her food and then eventually not eating).

So the doctors insist that it's surgery or take her home to die.  She's 12, but I had to try.  She could live another four years if I'm lucky... so she had the surgery.  They removed a plastic thing from her stomach, cleaned out some hair ball, and then removed DENTAL FLOSS from her small intestine.  They had to remove a section of intestine that was too damaged to heal properly.

That was May 1st.  I got her back the following Sunday and it's been dog infirmary at my house ever since.  She's had to come to work with me all of last week, has had diarrhea like you wouldn't believe, can't climb stairs or play or jump on anything, was on three prescriptions and a fancy bland diet.

This coming Friday she's able to ditch the cone and stop being kept in a crate whenever I'm not around to make sure she doesn't play with the other dog and rip her sutures.  She's also lost a little over two pounds - which for a 19 pound dog is a lot.  So once she's otherwise recovered I have to work on fattening her back up - that part I'm sure she'll love.

The price tag on this was completely insane - so I'm sharing this to tell you all to make sure your pets don't get into garbage.  Even if you think you're on top of this, it can be a total freaking disaster over something as simple as a door left open.  Also if you don't have pet insurance, I recommend that you at least consider it.  Even if it only covered half, it could have saved me thousands of dollars.

This is about two weeks ago, pre-surgery when she was miserable and doped up and not eating.

Glad to hear she seems to be recovering. Just to piggyback on the warning. Many years ago my cat ate some thread and same thing it started cutting his intestines. My mom who had no money still found away to pay for surgery. Anyway since then I've been a freak about anything thread like not being accessible to my pets.

Yes. Always remember this around Easter especially...  That plastic "grass" can be deadly. If you have pets, spring a little extra and get the paper variety.

Glad to hear your pooch is doing well. One question: was the dog-sitter a friend?

One of my wife's former students, nice girl and she's dog-sat for us before without incident.  She felt really awful that the dog had gotten sick, and I stopped giving her updates once I found out that it was going to require surgery.  The only reason I ever talked to her about it in the first place was because I needed to know what else was in that trash can.  After the first few days though when it got really serious, I just didn't tell her what was going on anymore, we didn't mention it on Facebook or anything so she wouldn't hear about it there too.

As awful as the whole thing is, she certainly didn't do anything malicious - it was a dumb accident that turned into a huge thing.  So I'm trying to keep her feeling even worse.

Glad your dog's doing better Rob...  Geeze, so much going on with pets.

I'm currently trying to find a reliable method of edible anti-tick medication of some sort...  I deal with a feral cat group who I've largely caught/fixed (one wily one) and ticks are an ever-increasing issue here as it seems like Summers are longer/hotter and winter shorter.  Never had tick problems as a kid here, now it seems constant though.

2 let me remove them, but two don't let me near them...  So food seems to be the only way to get medicine into them at all.   ::)

Thanks Tracy (and everyone else).  She's doing really well at this point.  The only real issues are the diarrhea, which has been an ongoing issue for 6 weeks now (but seems to finally be starting to get better) and then her weight.  We can't really work on fattening her back up until she can shat normally.

Well we had to put down our younger Boston, Dante, on Saturday morning.  He was 12 and we got him at about 8 weeks old.  He'd been having lots of issues lately that we thought were related to ruptured discs in his neck but ended up culminating in really serious seizures on Friday night.  There are other symptoms that I'm not going to bother everyone with, but the basic course of action was to spend $1000 on short-term treatment and then another $1500 on an MRI that was nearly certain to show a brain tumor.  So we made the call.  The awful thing was that he'd been a month without pain symptoms in his neck and we thought he was close to being ready to get out of the crate and get on walks and all that good stuff so even though there were warning signs, we thought it was just a neck injury - so this really feels like it came out of nowhere.

I have no idea how people handle this, but we're plodding along.  I'm gonna miss the hell out of the little guy.

Sorry for your loss, Rob.  It's been almost a year since we put our Dane down and every once in a while I'll still come home and expect her to come plodding around the corner.  The first month or two are tough and then it gets better bit by bit...

Sorry you had to put your dog down Rob.  I know that feeling all too well, and you just have to take your time.  Still think about so many pets I've had over the years. :(

Thanks everyone.  I've found an all new level of sympathy for people who have had to go through this.  I always knew it would be awful, but I really had no idea how much so.  Since I'm feeling overly nostalgic this week, here's one more from back when he was about 5.

It'd be lot easier if dogs weren't so damn cute and endearing.

Sorry to hear about your loss Rob.

My dog is turning 10 in April and has started that downhill slide that may take months or years to play out and has me thinking about her eventual departure from my family.

Sorry to hear about your loss Rob.  Anyone who has a pet knows that feeling.  Not quite the same as losing a family member, but about as close as you can get.  Hang in there.

Very sorry to hear about Dante, Rob.  Things like this are never easy.  Try to focus on the good times, and know that when he was really hurting you were able to relieve that suffering with compassion and mercy.

We were just faced with a serious illness with one of our cats, George.  He developed a UT blockage and nearly died.  And it's agonizing when you're faced with these situations because you're thrust into the uncomfortable position of playing God with your pet.  After a serious surgery and a very significant vet bill, our George has come home.  But it also makes you think very seriously about getting pet insurance for when these things occur.

Thanks guys.

Pet insurance is a definite for any pets we have in the future.  We've spent a fortune on our senior dogs this past year... I'd have to total it all up but it's probably a hair into five figures.  But I had it in my head that I could keep them around a few more years and it was worth it.  Between the surgery I detailed last year on the last page, two corneal debridements, the neck issues with Dante (that may have been brain tumor all along), the diarrhea with Emme... it's been constant.  Pills, extra walks, baby gates to prevent further injury, acupuncture, herbs, surgeries... I did everything I could imagine and after it was all said and done this happened, and the other one might be on her last legs.  I've already gotten a few recommendations for next go around, one of which was Trupanion... I'm told for $45 a month you get 90% coverage and it doesn't expire when they get old as long as you keep up on the payments.  If I'd had that, I'd have probably broken even in the long run, but the cost would have been spread out slowly over 12-13 years.  And, if it had been covered, I'd have just gotten the MRI to be sure before putting him down.

Next time...

I've heard that as well.  You might be better off just socking away what you would have paid in a savings account with the mindset that you can only use that money for pet care later on.

Interesting, I've talked to 4 or 5 pet owners this week and all of them swear by theirs.  Thanks for the opinions though.  This isn't a problem for any time soon, I'll certainly dig deeper into it when that time comes - probably a few years from now.

Well for the second time in 3 months I have some bad news...  Over the last 5 or so months or post-op Boston, Emerson, had been slowly deteriorating.  Her diarrhea was back with a vengeance, she was underweight no matter what I fed her, losing hair, tripping and falling, she wasn't able to get back up after lying down, cognitively she didn't seem all there... I think it was liver disease ultimately causing the symptoms this time around based on what I've been reading but we were treating her for diarrhea thinking if we could fix that we could at least fix a few of her issues.

Not to be all doom and gloom, but I also want to use this opportunity to encourage everyone to think twice about major surgery for older dogs.  At the time she was healthy and 12 and a half year old and I had less than an hour to make the decision, so I went for it.  But, since then it's been almost nothing but trouble, stress, time, and money trying to get her back to some semblance of normal, and no matter how many medicines, herbs, or treatments that I threw at it, it's just been a steady decline for a year. She's had flagyl, diagel, panicure, tylen powder, proviable, extra fiber in her diet, 3 other probiotics EN, ID, weekly B-12 injections, steamed rice, her regular food, the grain free version of it, various herbs from TCVM vets... and that's probably only half of what we tried. The other problem is that whenever you mess with her regimen, you have to wait 3 or 4 weeks to see if it's going to work. We just pumped so much medicine through her and none of it made a difference.

So, all of that and she was never able to gain weight, she had chronic diarrhea for 3 or 4 months after, which returned after about 3 short, good months last fall and has been a non-stop fight since late December. Her spine developed a curvature, presumably from adjusting her posture because of the abdominal surgery, which led to more weight on her front feet, which led to arthritis and stiffness and tripping and falling. She has Short Bowl Syndrome from having a section of her intestine removed which led to poor digestion and then she developed Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. The SIBO caused skin infections which led to bald spots and skin issues and may have contributed to her hearing loss. The malabsorption of nutrients associated with the diarrhea and stomach issues led to her losing strength and slowly getting weaker and less able to walk or get up once she's laid down. She stopped caring about anything other than food. I could go on, but you get the point. Post-surgery we poured so much time, effort, and money into getting her gut working properly and nothing did it. Until much more recently I'd been holding out hope that if I could just get her diarrhea fixed she'd absorb nutrients again and I could give her a normal senior life for a couple of years. I could handle the arthritis and the hearing loss, but when you add it all up it's just too much. So over the last few weeks we've been working through our last options and have finally decided that it was time to let her go.

So it's done.  We drove back up to northern Wisconsin Saturday and buried her with our other one, and for the first time since our second year of college we don't have dogs.  It's a weird and lonely feeling and I'm sure we'll get more eventually, but we're going to wait a little while.  The last year has been the not-fun part of having dogs, so we're going to take a little break.

Thanks guys.  I know it's life, and it sucks, and everyone with pet goes through it... it's just been tough having never done this and now having done it twice in 3 months.  That said, I know it'll get better over the next few days and weeks and while I think the last year has been stressful enough that we'll take at least a little time before getting a puppy, I'm pretty sure we'll get another one at some point in the next few months.

I might be going through exactly the same thing you are Rob.  We took Cora in for emergency exploratory surgery today because an x-ray showed a mass on her spleen.  If it's benign, they'll remove the spleen and she'll live for a long while.  If it's malignant, they give her 1 - 3 months, and if it's spread to other organs they will euthanize her on the operating table today.

I may have said goodbye to my dog for the last time this morning.

We lost our 13 year old pug Trixie on Friday.  :'(

She would have been 14 in October, was still going strong, albeit less active the past few years. It happened while we were on vacation with the whole family too. Huge bummer, but still the same time thankful she was with us and not locked up in a kennel several hundred miles away.

The kids were really sad at first but seem to have bounced back quickly, bless 'em. The wife and I are still pretty broken up about it though, we got her shortly after we moved in together and she was there for our wedding, two daughters, and survived two major surgeries along the way, including the emergency removal of her gallbladder. (We are still paying for that one)

Happy we got to enjoy her for as long as we did, trying to focus on that and not the end. Also helps we still have another dog Howie we rescued a couple of years back who is still going strong.

But yeah, most upset I've ever been over losing a pet. Just a fixture in our lives suddenly gone...

RIP girl.  :(

We had to say goodbye to our family dog Duke this past weekend. He was 13, and we were hoping to make it to his 14th birthday in May, or even better, the 14th anniversary of his adoption on July 3rd. But it wasn't meant to be.

He had developed hip problems over the last 2-3 years but he powered through them like a champ. His health really started to decline in late October, as he developed a growth on his back and went blind in his right eye. He was also yelping in pain from time to time, a very uncharacteristic trait. My mom took him to the vet, but the vet just wanted money for X-rays and other unnecessary junk. Around Thanksgiving the growth got bigger, and infected, so my mom took him to a different vet who immediately cut the growth out and confirmed it was cancerous. She gave us some pain pills and Duke was able to have one last Christmas and New Years celebration with the whole family, plus had a gnarly scar to show off. But over the last week he started getting even worse, wandering around, bumping into furniture, unable to be alone. More growths were popping up. Saturday morning he went out in the backyard and collapsed, and my parents made the call to put him to sleep. It was hard to see him those last 3 months, but he powered through it like a trooper, and his pain is finally gone.

He lived a damn good life for a dog... my mom walked him every single morning for about a decade, until he couldn't handle long walks anymore. Plus I walked him every afternoon in high school and when I was home from college, and when I would house sit later on. He had my grandpa's farm to run around on, with a tank to swim in. Plenty of squirrels and rabbits to chase, and he always got the leftover rib bones when we had BBQ.

Here (http://i.imgur.com/GSuf7pr.jpg) are some pics (http://i.imgur.com/ggidbCO.jpg) of Duke on his 13th adoption anniversary last July, and my favorite pic of the two of us circa 2008 (http://i.imgur.com/HoN3a3N.jpg), the only picture I was able to ever get of him looking directly into the camera.

I like to think he's found some of the other pets from this thread in Doggie Heaven and they're having discussions on their owners' Star Wars collections. :)

I didn't want to switch gears too quickly in a thread that can be really fun and happy or really sad... but I've been meaning to share for a week or two.

After what was honestly a pretty awful year or so leading up to and going through the aftermath of losing both dogs, we waited about 6 months and got a new one in December.  We knew we wanted another Boston, so we spent a lot of time looking at breeders and pet rescues and all that kind of stuff and eventually found someone we really liked and trusted and got on their waiting list.  As much as I love the idea of rescuing one, I decided that I wanted as young a dog as possible to put as much time between what we just went through and the day we'll have to do it again.

So the breeder called us in late November and said they'd had a litter... we got our pick of a couple and chose this one based on her markings and flat little face.  Our last two were Dante and Emerson after Dante Alighieri and Ralph Waldo Emerson, so we stuck with the literary theme and named our new girl Poe after Edgar Allan Poe (Star Wars tie-in is a bonus).

She's a total riot, has perfect breed standard markings, and is amazingly smart and well behaved for not even being four months old yet.  She sits, stays, is pad trained... she already fetches... she sleeps through the night, almost never whines... I'm really impressed with her.  I could post 500 photos and videos, but to avoid boring everyone, here's three.  It was 60 degrees here on Saturday, so we got to open the window and even go outside for basically the first time in her life:

Yeah, I love the window shot, partially because it reminds me of when we moved to Chicago.  First day, as soon as my dogs found that they had a window with interesting things on the other side, this was what happened:

She does!  She moves exactly like that too - you could tell Pixar used good reference for their animation - which you'd expect I suppose.

I thought it was going to be funny and silly...so we made the mistake of watching Feast for the first time right after we put our second Boston down in June.   it was, funny, but also so sweet and heart wrenching and heart warming that my wife and I basically cried our way through it.

Well for the second time in 3 years I just had a dog that needed its small intestine re-sectioned.

Poe stopped eating on Saturday and then ate some on Sunday, then wouldn't eat again on Monday.  Instead of dental floss, this time it was some sort of weird abnormality on her intestine where there was a pocket where food was collecting and getting stuck.  They couldn't figure it out on the x-rays or ultrasound, so they did an exploratory surgery to find the problem.  They don't know if it was from an abscess or if it's a birth defect or what.  They're doing a biopsy which will come back in 7 to 10 days, but no one expects cancer given her age.

$4,200 later she's home and I'm doing dog rehab again, trying to keep her calm so she doesn't bust her stitches and so the re-sectioning doesn't leak.

The part that's killing me is that I didn't get pet insurance.  After the last time I thought long and hard about it, and asked a lot of people their opinions, and decided that since it wasn't likely to happen again, and since she was so young, I'd set aside $40 a month for her and then if we never had an issue I'd have a nice pile of cash sitting there when she was gone someday.  There's like $360 in it so far.  :-\

My advice is now officially that everyone should get the insurance.  It'll be interesting to see if that's an option for me after all this... I'm assuming it'll either be really expensive or at a minimum they won't cover her GI Tract.

Ugh.

Damn Rob, sorry to hear about that.

I've thought the same thing about the insurance and when our cat and dog cross the rainbow bridge (15 years and 11 years respectively), we'll pick up some new ones and will most likely get insurance for them too.  Between the two animals we have now, I've done 3 UTIs ($5500) and two ACL surgerys ($5000).  Yeah, good investment.

We got him from the local shelter as sick little kitten, not more than 4 or 5 weeks old and for the past 15 years, it was due to how amazing of a cat he was, that we opened up our home to many other cats.

When we found him Sunday morning he was unable to use his back legs, we wrapped him in a blanket and took him to the vet, knowing the situation was not good, right before leaving, I took him by where our other cats were laying and told each of them that he may be going "bye bye" for the last time. Many of them nuzzled at, and licked his head as if to give him an affectionate kiss goodbye.

We were told by the vet he either had a blood clot or had fallen and broken something in his back. He wasn't a very vocal kitty, but from his meows, it was clear he was in quite a bit of pain. We contemplated having them give him something for the pain and a steroid to reduce inflammation to see if that would help, but we agreed it was better to end his pain than to put him through any further suffering, simply because we were not 100% ready to say goodbye.

So sorry for your loss Pete.  At least the litte guy is not in pain now and he had a great 15 years as part of your family.

Sorry for your loss.  I had the exact same thing happen to a cat of ours.  Blood clot/embolism.  I will never forget the noises he was making.

We had to say goodbye to my cat Bailey today.  She was 17 years old and her health was in decline, but she was in great spirits, but the other day, I accidentally left the gate at the top of our stairs open and our female rottie, Sasha went downstairs and got to her.  Bailey's injuries were more severe than we originally thought and I took her to the vet today to end her pain.

I don't think I'll ever forgive myself.

So sorry Matt, that’s tough on a few different levels.  I hope it gets better.

Sorry to both Pete and Matt.

This past year late fall we had my gfs cat’s leg amputated and it was a stressful time due to her age.  We bought some time with her and she has rebounded well.  Still I was on anxiety overload for about 3-4 months while we looked at options and kept trying to take care of her.

I know how you guys all feel, either when it’s time for them to be at rest or you’re making difficult financial decisions regarding surgeries and stuff.

Edit: spoke too soon maybe.  Got down to gfs tonight and the cat’s other hind leg is giving her trouble and she’s sort of struggling on it.  It’s been months, so I dunno.  I hope it’s just a sprain or something and she works through it.

Apologies in advance for once again resurrecting this thread to share another loss...

This past Wednesday, I had to say goodbye to a kitty that I only got to have as a part of my life for four years, but she was the most amazing little fur baby I have ever had.

She was born w/o eyes, but that never stopped her. She could get around just as well as my other cats that had eyes and if anything she was even more fearless than those who could see. Unlike the other kitties who flock to my wife, she was bonded to me, so her loss has hit me really hard, harder than any other cat I have had to let go. I think it mostly has to do with the fact that I was not ready to not have her in my life, but I don't think I ever would have been.

Anyway, her name was Phoebe and I will continue to think about her and love her until my last day on Earth...

Sorry to hear that, Pete. Sometimes it’s the unexpected attachments that really hit the hardest. Wishing you the best!

Sorry man, as we’ve all experienced here it’s hard but you have given the pet the best life they could’ve had, and you try to take some solace knowing they were loved and cared for.  It never makes it hurt any less it seems, but it’s a good thing to try to remember too.  I feel bad any time any of you guys post a loss of a pet because I know how much it hurts me when it happens.

Sorry to hear Pete.  We lost our cat a year and a half ago when one of my dogs got to her.  It was tough because she was 17 and I found her when she was a kitten.  It's never easy.
