Post by: Ruprecht on June 3, 2005, 05:39 PM
Everyone and their dog has done clones, but I'm new to all this so I had to try my hand at 'em.  I've been experimenting with different types of tape, paint, and pen with all these figures, so please bare with me and gimme some feedback.  :D

Those all look excellent to me!  I like the pack on the back of your Commander Gree.  My only thing would be to dirty Gree up a bit.  Some blaster scorch marks, scrapes, and knicks in his armor would look really cool.
I like your Shocktroopers and that you kept them clean, they look great that way.  If you're just starting out in customizing then I'm completely blown away because these all look incredible!

Thanks Gregorbian, you are too kind.  :D  Of course, without the help and advice of all you guys here, they'd surely look a lot worse.

I think you're right about Gree...it seems he's a difficult clone to master.  Right now I'm working on filling out a squad for Gree - a bunch of spec ops guys for him to command.  They won't be like the biker scouts, though.  I'm thinking a cross between the Republic Commando and Gree might look kinda cool.  I'm just fleshing out their weaponry right now.

mmmm...custom weaponry...that's hot.

Very cool clones. I like the sky/ground concept of the clones.

First of all, welcome!

I have to say, I love the custom squad. Fan-fic clones are my favorite.

The others, especially the Coruscant clones, look great. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

What he said.  U have a knack for good paint apps.  I really dig the accessoires on gree.  what line are they from?

I've never seen the back of Gree, and I think that little extra u put in really makes that figure.

Shock troopers are nice and crsip, those lines look ruler drawn!  Very nice imagination on the Aerial Troops.

Excellent camera work Hoss!

Talon,

Gree's backpack straps are made from a BBI figure, just like the one I did, and the one CHEWIE did.

Yeah, thats right.  why is it so hard for me to remember that line?  ???

Thanks guys!  I'm flattered that you all like my stuff.

Hehe, I stole the Gree backpack idea from Chewie and DD.  I probably wouldn't have even thought about using my BBI or GIJoe stuff for customs had it not been for them.  I cut the lower half of the BBI backpack off and used the extra plastic to glue around his leg holster.  The holster also came from the BBI figure, I just carved it up a bit with an Xacto.

The exact figure is the Navy Seal Breacher (http://smalljoes.com/images_bluebox/navyseal-4_l.jpg).

Again, thanks for the help, advice, and warm welcome!

Well I'll be damned, another awesome Clone customizer among our ranks!  Welcome to our humble community!

Let me start off with the Gree - that is top notch work.  I love it!  You did a perfect job on the backpack as far as I'm concerned - that is stunning.  Great paint job too.

The Shocktroopers look very nice too - I love how straight your paint lines look.  I hope Hasbro releases this figure on a SA body...

The Aerial troopers look nice too - I like the EU paint scheme you gave them.

Well done, and I can't wait to see more of your work.   :)

I'm digging all of it, the paint apps are very well done...which is something I can appreciate because I suck at it!

I really like the Arial Clones scheme, very clever.

I had a chance to see these in person a few weeks ago  - all I can say is that they're great in the pictures and even better in person.

I was really impressed with the accessories from other lines you used to detail your Clones - and the paint application isn't too bulky or thick, it's a nice wash technique that has some nice depth and layers.

Simply awesome!

B-

These look great! Sorry I haven't replied earlier, I have been really hooked on KOTOR2 for the last few days :P

Aerial troops- That camo is so cool! I love the sky and ground mix. I love 'em.

Gree- From the neck down he is perfect, I love the backpack. The helmet is still incorrect though, I don't know that I've seen a correct Gree helmet yet, including my own. The one reference picture that seems to be used the most, isn't cooorect. I think it is a concept shot, because it is different from the movie.

Shocktroopers- they look really good. I think you could scratch them up a bit. And I know the shoulder pad isn't movie accurate, but I really like it.

Keep it up! I look forward to seeing more of your customs. :)

It's been a while since I've been on the web, so here are some customs I finished a couple months ago.  Let me know what you think.

Things I know:

Their visors look like crap, due to me experimenting with glowing mediums and other such things - I'll be redoing those.

Bly's colors aren't correct, but I was just following what I printed out.  *shrug*

These are some great clones!  The level of detail on that Gree Delta Squad is very impressive, nice work!
I like the weathering, it's not too much and it looks very decent.  When I weather I tend to go overboard, so it's good to see you don't make the same mistake  ;)

Are those accessories on the Delta Squad from BBi figures or from something else (or a combination of things) ?  They fit in really well.
Title: Re: Bjardkerr's customs (Updated 9/9/05)
Post by: Ruprecht on September 9, 2005, 04:34 PM
Thanks G!

The accessories for the Deltas are a combination of parts from GIJoe, BBI, Lego, and other SW stuff.  Tons of dremelling, sanding, gluing and such was required.  All their rifles are the M249 SAW from BBI, with much of it chopped off.

It took me so long to do these, that it burned me out on doing any camo or custom armor and weaponry work for a long time.  I have some pics of my aqua clone to upload too, so stay tuned!

nice detailed painting and good imagination on the aqua clone. i like the gree delta squad too, lots of detail. what did you use to make the shoulder armor look so big on both shoulder of the delta behind the sniper? it looks like a at-te gunner shoulder pad, but with somthing extra on the left shoulder. great work!!! ;D

It's 2 at-te gunner shoulder pads.  The one on his left shoulder is turned around so it wraps around the back of him.  I put 'em on him, then glued them together.

Thanks for the comments!

Wow, where to begin?  Some custom Clones that are some of the finest I've seen!

Gree - He looks really good from what I can see.  I think once we all have seen the new Gree in person from Hasbro, that we'll be glad we've made our own versions.

Gree's Grunts - All of them have excellent detail, paint jobs, etc.  But what sets them apart in my opinion is the level of detail you put into giving them accessories.  They all look oustanding.

Bly and Amigo - They both look great, I guess that Amigo could use a bit of weathering to match Bly more.  The only thing that looks odd is the visors, I think they should be darker.  I prefer black.

Aqua Clone - What a great concept, paint job, additions to his armor, and his underwater gun is fantastic.  Just the visor looks a little off... again, I think you could have left this as pure black.  But it's still a great figure.... since the helmet is removable, you could always get another from an AT-TE gunner and retry it.

Great job all around!

 :P

Thanks guys, it's good to hear such talented peeps like my work.

As for the visors, I agree with you chewie - mostly.  I don't know what kind of trip I was on, but all I want to do every time I see them now is Xacto the coloring off.  When I do, I may or may not put on a much darker color of visor paint with a tad of the glowing medium.  They just look so cool when it's dark, with the glow and all.

While I agree with chewie on the colouration of Bly and his amigo's visor's, I'd keep the silver visor ofthe aqua clone. It just looks right to me.

Here's one more before I toss in my Bounty Hunter guy.

I call him the Commander Candy Corn.  My son, who is 7, said he wanted me to paint him a Clone, so I asked what colors.  He said "Orange, yellow, black, green, and red."  I narrowed him down to the first three and he notified me after he was all painted that I forgot the jetpack, holster, and custom guns.  Well, it's done now and he wanted me to take pics of it so he could see it on the computer.

Very original design!  I love it!  The lines are very crisp and sharp - excellent work!
The only suggestion that I have is that the white on the thighs looks a bit out of place - I would probably paint that yellow or something to match the rest of the "camo" pattern.

I think it's safe to say that your son definitely has the best Clone Trooper out of all of his friends!  Nice work!

My entry for the September 2005 Customizing Challenge (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=9091.0).

His name is Eidolon, formerly known as CT 44/001.  Previously served as Lieutenant to Commander Cody in the 212th Attack Battalion, Shadow Company.  Prior to that he served under Commander Fordo on Muunilinst, and Hypori, receiving promotions to Captain, then Lieutenant for outstanding service rendered.  After the Jedi Rebellion, he left galactic military life to pursue a more lucrative and satisfying career in bounty hunting.  He specializes in Long Range Recoveries and Assassinations, often contracting with the Galactic Empire to hunt down the ever-elusive Jedi traitors.  His handiwork in that regard is frequently broadcast over Imperial Holovision.

Figured I'd give him some kind of back story to make up for the fact that he is, after all, yet ANOTHER clone custom.  This was my first time messing with sculpting, and I learned a lot.  This guy took forever!

Is that first gun a truncated Clone rifle with a blade?  Whatever it is, great work!

Thanks G.

The first gun is the backend of a clone rifle, with the front end of the GI Joe rifle below, which came with a lot of figures through the years, including Neo-Viper Commander (http://www.yojoe.com/action/03/neovipercommander2.shtml).

Can't remember where the stuff came from for his second, larger gun.....looking that up now.

I like commander candy corn the best. He's very halloweenish. He kind of reminds me of toxic waste maintenance guy. He's got the haz-mat colors.

I also like the red/black clone. I like all of the details hanging off of him. The gun holster is very cool. Too bad the chest isn't more smooth but I can say that his armor is just really pitted up. I lke the visor and the little symbol on the top.

Hi bjardkerr

Got me buggered how I missed this thread but glad I found it.

your candy corn clone is different yet very unquie and I like the different colours that you've used on him he would look good on a molten lava planet he'd blend in very well.

The bounty hunter looks bloody awesome I like all the added gear and equipment you've used on him very well put togther.

And your aqua clone is excellent I really like the cmao scheme you've given him and also I've noticed that you've use parts from the 1/18 elite force navy seal diver very well done without going overboard.

Helmet Antennae:  Right side - random gi joe part;  Left side - Sheet styrene
Shoulder Antenna:  Styrene, sculpy, wire
Camera:  gijoe gun part, cut and sanded
Jetpack:  3 styrene sheets, sanded, etc. to shape.  Looks kinda like a big tooth.  I'll be changing that with my next rev.

Thanks guys.  It's always rewarding to hear good feedback, especially given that It took FOREVER to make.  I would rather have gotten Bantha5's kit for my son.  It would've saved me tons of time.  This is the kind of custom that takes so much time and effort, that when finished, you cringe at the very thought of action figures.

Here's my first attempt at Captain Fordo from Clone Wars Season 2.  You'll notice the holster doesn't close on the gun, it used to close into a little slit and it looked cool once, but I accidentally broke it off and am too lazy to fix it.

I'm not entirely happy with the way his helmet worked out, so I'm working on a second one, which you'll see in the last pic.  The tweezers are not custom, but I believe the brand name is Revlon, should you admire the craftsmanship thereof.

That is cool especially the helmet. I like the markings on the forehead. Too bad the crappy hasbro head ruins the figure with that stupid look on his face. A repaint of the head would be a big bonus.

Excellent work man!

Nope commander keller had a parjai type helmet and he led a group of snow troopers.  This is indeed Captain Fordo.

I'm digging the working holster and I especially love the way he looks like a half way point between animated and realistic. It makes him look very unique i think. Great Job man! 8)

These are my only two sources of information that may confirm that he is Fordo.  I've found conflicting sources as well, but they are more vague.  There's one where Karen Traviss says he's not Fordo, but doesn't say who he is, but I forgot where that was.  Doh!

Source 1 from SW.com (http://www.starwars.com/welcome/about/news/f20051223/indexp5.html) (near the bottom).

Source 2 from a wiki site (http://starwars.wikicities.com/wiki/Fordo)

Thanks guys,

I agree, Phruby, that the head doth indeed suck.  I only put the Tank Gunner head on him because I think he'd be one of the first batch of clones, and therefore would look older.  Once I successfully cast some clone heads, or buy them from someone, I'll take a shot at altering them, but until then I'll have to settle for the cross-eyed, slack-jawed hillbilly look.

very interesting fordo custom bjardkerr.  your work looks amazing on the short pistol, the pauldron and the holster and the helmet looks very good too...but the non-animated clone body and the fact that we never see a clone "unmasked" in the clone wars animated series is what kind of ruins it for me. this is not a slam on you or work, please don't take it that way, this is just my opinion. i guess what i am trying to say is i prefer either "real world" or "animated" style and not a mixture.  i know we all have limited budgets and work with what we have and you have done a wonderful job doing just that.

Great work on Commander Cody very realistic and just the right amount of weathering has been done well done.

Captain Fordo look awesome the helmet and is great and the belt and shoulder gear turned out reall well.

No offense taken.  My intent with this was to see how well an AOTC style helmet accommodated a Neyo-like sculpt, since I think the ROTS helmet-based Neyo sculpts out there have too much bulk in the rebreather area.

I can understand your viewpoint, since the most we ever see is the back of Fordo's head prior to the Hypori rescue, I just like removable helmets for some reason.

Wow... what a sweet, well thought out and executed custom figure.  I personally love the helmet. This is one of those ones that has a cartoonish feel to me, but in a kickass way.  I love all the details like the strap, the helmet is awesome, he's got fantastic articulation, etc.   This customs really rocks... I love the helmet.  I do see a mixture of animation and real world work here, something I never thought could be pulled off but you did it... I'd say add a small bit of weathering and you've created a custom that people will use as a measuring standard.

Thanks Chewie,  the weathering was something I stewed over quite a bit.  The cartoon version wouldn't be weathered at all, but he looks a bit too bright w/o it in the pics, and especially in the real world next to other clones.  I'm doing another one for my son, and I'll decide which one to weather when it's done.

BTW, does anyone have a standard white color paint that they use for the clone body armor?  Like I said, he looks a bit bright, but I've yet to come up with a white color that isn't.  Maybe I should add a tiny bit of light blue?  Suggestions?

On a serious note, I like it very much. As Chewie said, it's a blending of cartoon and realism I wouldn't think would work out well, but you have pulled it off masterfully.

The paint apps are great and the helmet is EXTREMELY well done...I don't think I could have pulled this off had I tried.

This is one of my favorite troopers from the Animated series. Excellent exicution.
The Paint apts are clean and Sharp.
You've melded the Live action and animated aspects together and created a very unique look.
The Helmet mod is amazing. Any Chance we'll see some Cast?
I've wanted to do a live action version of this character ever since I saw the Cartoon But, I i'm stumped on the helmet mod.

Keep up the great work!

I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to get casting stuff on my own, so I may see if Glassman will make casts of it.  If the alternate helmet turns out better, I may have that one cast instead.  I'm recovering from sinus and nasal surgery, so everything's on hold for the next week or so......now if you'll excuse me I must rinse, blow ghastly chunks, and repeat.   :'(

I use Games Workshop Skull White - it's the "whitest of the white" from I've seen so far.  It might not be what you're looking for if you want to tone down the brightness a bit, but I've found that it matches the #41 SA Clone's white armor perfectly.

I really like the look of your Capt. Fordo - the helmet is very cool, I don't think you need to change it.  I think you successfully captured a combination of the Animated/"real world" version of this character.  The only thing that doesn't really work for me is the belt, it still seems a bit too "animated" to me.  I don't know how accurate it would be, but I would just repainted the #41 SA Clone's belt.

Great job on those accessories as well.  The pauldron looks perfect and the blaster is awesome, very clever.  Nice work!

CC1 - You're always your own worst critic.  Your Boss looks good, more battle-worn, which I like.  Mine does have foot articulation, when I get the pics resized, uploaded, etc., I'll post 'em.

Findswoman - Yes, I am the Ruprecht formerly known as Bjardkerr, or TRFKAB.  I was paralyzingly idle one day and I started thinking of things that make me laugh, and Ruprecht Jamieson from the film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels got me rolling.....sitting there.....all by myself.  Now that the foray into my neurotic and derelict mind is over, a "Deece" is slang for his DC-17m rifle.

Chewie - I haven't had breakfast or lunch, and your name brings visions of warm, soft, chewie brownies to mind.  Oh the humanity!

I did not realize the Mace Windu squad had been released yet. I will have to go get me a pack (for the Parjai more than anything)
I keep seeing so many cool things that can be done with Bust-Ups that I may have to go track down some.
I envy the work area you and other have. I have very very limited space to use for my customizing at the moment.

Was curious...one of the clones you got there looks like a fresh cast without any paint. Was it just painted over with white?

Thanks Straxus.  I went to Target's Customer Service desk and asked them to look up the Windu Squad by its DCPI number.  They said it wasn't on the floor yet, but they had some in the back, and they happily brought out a case.  I bought one for me, and one for my boys, and was I ever relieved!  I didn't get a Cmdr. Cody until about a month ago because I NEVER could find him in stores, and I refuse to pay $10 plus $10 shipping for one from ebay.

Yes, it, and the other ARC Gunship crew-to-be was spray painted white with Krylon H20, with a couple of coats of H20 primer underneath.  The ones I spray painted were done out of necessity, because when I was removing the original paint with Easy Lift-Off, it yellowed some of the plastic.  (make sure when using ELO that you have a bowl of water nearby to dip the figures in!)

The reason they haven't been finished is when I was done spray painting them, they all had a matte look and feel instead of the smooth sheen that clone armor has, so now I have to sand each one with progressively finer grit pads.  It takes a long time to do, so naturally I put it off until some other aspect of customizing frustrates me more.

I've always loved the AOTC ARC Troopers, except for the fact that they have little in the way of articulation.  My attempts here are to correct that, sculpting the same (as best I can) doo-dads onto SA Clone bodies.

I finally got around to putting one of Ryan's amazing Neyo heads on a body, beginning Fixer's unique helmet attachment, and attempting a "conjectural" Phase 2 ARC (to borrow a bit of AE77's phrasing).

The Phase 2 ARC is really a result of me having mixed up a bit too much Fixit Sculpt and deciding not to throw it out.

Just a couple of dark Airborne troops with jetpacks at this point.  The helmets are ones that I cast in black resin myself.

I plan on painting them with some sort of gray camo scheme, and some insignia here and there.  I was messing with my camera's settings (color, black & white, etc.), and it's obvious I have much to learn about photography and dusting.  :D

Thanks Noodle.

I'm not sure about the paintjob.  I can't decide between the Hasbro, Darkhorse Comics, or Wizards of the Coast scheme.  I may make one of them red, or both blue......I just don't know yet.

Very nice sculpting!
I like the monicle on that arc.

Fixer looks fantastic so far,  cant wait to see them when they're all done.

ARCs ready to paint, 1 partially painted, 1 has a little Captain in him.  The headless trooper is the beginning of a Null ARC.  A lot of his accessories are the same as the other ARCs at this point, but that'll change.  Last pic is my work bench.

Thanks Brisk.

Unfortunately, I was never very good with Sculpy.  I'd sculpt a piece, boil it, and try to sculpt more on the same part, but Sculpy was too brittle and would either flake or break off.

If I had any advice for Sculpy, I'd say:

1.  Invest in some good sculpting and/or dental tools
2.  Don't overboil the part, or it becomes way too brittle.  30 seconds is usually more than sufficient if the part is not too thick.
3.  Be patient with yourself.  It's sometimes discouraging when a slip of the hand or tool ruins a part you've worked on forever.  Just know that you WILL screw up at some point.  Roll with the punches that sculpting small stuff throws at you, and try, try again.  You won't create your masterpiece the first or even 50th time you sculpt something.
4.  Use a separate pot for boiling Sculpy.
5.  If you try Sculpy for a month and don't find it to your liking, order some Fixit Sculpt from AvesStudio.com (http://www.avesstudio.com).

All shall be turned to the FIXIT side of the force.... all is going according to our design, in time you all will call FIXIT your sculpting medium...
However in all seriousness he is right, its great stuff!

Was curious Ruprecht, what do you use for your mold making primarily? (forgive me if I asked on another forum and forgot...)

Same stuff as most:  Smooth-On Smooth-Sil 920 for helmets, and Micro-Mark RTV rubber for everything else.

I like th sculpting job alot. I try to keep my sculpting down to a minimum due to lack of patience after one piece after another breaks...I know it happens. What made you decide the two different size armor pieces on the upper part of the chest armor?

I based the extra armor off the ARC Trooper from the Clone Wars series.  If you look at the pics from the link below, you'll notice the chest armor is different from right to left.

Hahahahahahhahahahahaha!

I'm thinking a Han body would work best as a base, but I don't think I could pull it off.  Faces still frustrate the hell outta me.

Someday...someday I'll make him with a Trident, fork with a cork, and separate genital cuff accessory.  For now I'll have to settle for researching genital harnesses.  If Slumber Parties sells one, I'll have my wife order it.   :-*

Thanks Hemble, I always enjoy your work, so it's good to hear a pro likes my stuff.

I've been busy (haven't we all?) with real life crap for a while, so not much here.  I have finally managed to begin painting 2 of the ARCs, pictured here, along with their
weapons.

I used Blasterman's technique to give this guy ball-jointed wrists, which is the only way to go if you want your clone holding his weapon south-central style.

I've come to the realization that I hate thinking about painting, but I kinda like it once I get started.  Procrastination is my forte, you might say.  This guy is almost done.  It's taken a while because I had to seek advice and figure out the best way to cast his pauldron.  I've got some casts that I think I'm happy with, so it's onto the kama.  I'll be giving his rifle a sling, again using Blasterman's technique with the lego sail canvas.

The third, headless ARC will end up being a Null.  So I've been doing some different things with his leg armor.  I'll be doing more with his upper body armor, mainly more techy-looking gadgets and what-not.  The trick will be to avoid making him look like a power ranger.    :)

Finally done with this guy.  Took a while to do his belt spat thingies, and just generally finish up.  Now that I've taken the final pics, I noticed I need to do some touch-up painting, and paint some smaller details on his wrist gauntlets and rifle.  Without further ado:

And a WIP shot.  The AOTC helmet was made removable using Glassman's technique (you rock Glass!), and I think it looks better than Hasbro's removable helmet.

P.S. - Replace the word "Sculpy" with "Fixit."  It's late, it's Friday, and I'm a tad tipsy...

I've made molds for the helmets, weapons, pauldron, and guns, so making more isn't a materials problem.  It's more a matter of how long it takes to sculpt such small accessories on a figure.  I have 1 more in the works, and may do more in the future.

You mean the one with the AOTC helmet on?  If so, then no.  That one will be sold as well.  I'm working on some different leg bindings for him, and other various stuff that I haven't quite fleshed out yet in my mind.

Ruprecht, did you use the same kama on Frodo Fordo as on Mereel or your earlier blue ARC? (i.e. the type you received from Outrider).
Title: Re: Ruprecht's Customs --Similar Stuff-- (Update 8/1/07)
Post by: Ruprecht on August 6, 2007, 04:46 PM
Yes I did.  He sent me a bunch of pre-cut ones, but they were too small for the look I was going for.  So I used the rectangular bit he sent me to cut them out.

It's some really thin suede, but Paul (Outrider) couldn't remember what brand they were or where he got them.

I'll have to go to the market someday to see if I can find anything like that. I got some other kamas from him a while ago, with the sewn edges. Too bad it appears he's out of the costumizing scene... Hmm, maybe a piece of chamois leather would work too.
