Vintage Kenner / Re:Sale of the Century Update 11/17/02
« on: November 21, 2002, 02:25 PM »
Thanks for getting the info out DSJ. I envy you for having even 1 carded vintage figure. The one thing I want to add is that it seems it was a legit  collection. If not, I'm sure the guy would've given it up for the $9700 offered. I agree that he would be wise to break them up, but I also think that he can get a good price for the collection if the right buyer steps in. Hopefully we'll see some of these items again as a set or as individual items for auction. The boost it has the potential to give the SW collectibles market would be a great thing for us all.

Saga '02-'04 / Re:Kmart has been kind...
« on: November 20, 2002, 10:42 PM »
I'm in Colorado. In the last year or so they have shut down 2  Kmart stores near me. I thought it was just a matter of time before they all went down like dominoes. I guess Kmart actually was able to salvage their losses and is chugging along at the moment. Maybe it's the fewer area stores now, or maybe I just am in the right Kmart zone.

The nearest TRU to me is 45 minutes away. I haven't even been to see if they have the silver R2-D2s because it's such a hassle to get to. You win some and lose some. Target has been the lame duck here. They aren't even restocking. The pegs are bare and I asked and they said they wanted to clear out before they reloaded. They must be wary at the lower market stores due to the lack of demand with the last 3 releases and that they over order one wave and that sacrifices their ability to provide the later waves. They need to learn a thing or two about all that stuff.

Star Wars Universe / Shadows and EU
« on: November 20, 2002, 01:10 AM »
Power of the Force 2 had some brilliant releases that still have not been expanded upon. Delving into the worlds of Star Wars novels, comic books and video games, Kenner & Hasbro introduced some great characters into the realm of 3-D figures. With Shadows of the Empire and the Expanded Universe lines we were given a whole new list of countless new figure possibilities. Unfortunately, Hasbro hasn't taken the ball and run with it.

If they were to introduce a new Expanded Universe line today, what figures would you most want to see them release?

Due to my unfamiliarity with most of the EU stuff, I have little input here, but it would help me to know where to go when I begin my exploration into the Expanded Star Wars Universe.

Saga '02-'04 / K-Mart stores
« on: November 20, 2002, 12:19 AM »
Kmart is the only retailer I've found in my region that has stocked any of the figures above #40. Everyone else here is still trying to unlode backstock and unfortunately, it's not early backstock either.

Kmart has run several 2 day, $3 Star Wars figure sales. I was able to find one in another town that actually priced them (sticker gun tags) and hadn't made the change after the sale. I nabbed Ki-Adi-Mundi, Teemto, Tusken Raider/Massiff & Watto and went to the checkout not sure what to expect. As I'm scanning other aisles, I walk past just to double check that I didn't miss something and an employee is there and he's retagging the figures. I went to the cash register and checked out and told them what the tag read. The manager said that in the interest of customer satisfaction, I'd get them at the price that was marked ($3). Needless to say, I was a satisfied customer!

The next stop at a Kmart in my own area, I netted a Clone Pilot and Jango Pilot. They must've been pegged recently, because there were several to choose from of each figure.

They had a 2 day, $3 sale at the same Kmart (my area) and I thought it was all week. I arrived late in the evening on the 2nd day (luckily) and lo and behold, 2 Ephant Mon's were bending the pegs. I decided to leave one for the sake of letting someone else be as delighted as I was. I also grabbed a Lott Dodd. They really have been treating me well!

The last finds were pretty much luck and at a Kmart in an area where I work (30 min. from my home). First visit, a lone, clean shaven Endor Rebel Soldier lay waiting for me to retrieve it.

The next day, I went back on a whim and another one had come out of hiding and was quickly snagged and purchased. 2 clean shaven Endor Rebels in 2 days! Since, not a one has shown up.

Kmart has been hooking me up!

I found a rare Padme Amidala today, but passed her up due to the bubble being damaged. I thought I'd pass the info along though for those of you that hunt for variants. The Padme (Coruscant) has a sticker where the informational blurb appears. This is to cover a text mistake.
The first variant has the text error. It is based on the bio text not being specific on the origin of the figure and inconsistant with the real story.
It reads;

"An explosion tears apart the royal ship that is supposedly carrying the queen of Naboo, just as the vessel reaches Coruscant. Ready to defend those in danger, Senator Padme Amidala is relieved that the ship was a decoy and the queen is safe, but she is alarmed by the violent attack and its menacing implications."

All the other Padme's have either the sticker corrected back or the text reprinted correctly.
It reads;

"Senator Amidala, the former queen of Naboo, returns to  Coruscant to vote on the critical issue of creating an army for the Republic to assist the overwhelmed Jedi. As her Naboo Cruiser arrives, an explosion tears apart the ship. Fortunately Padme, disguised as a Naboo Pilot, eludes danger, but her decoy Carde, disguised as Senator Amidala, was not as lucky."

Yet another slew of variants for the masses!

Good luck and hunting!

Hidden Shaaks...

There are supposed to be 3 hidden shaaks in the movie. I haven't had any luck yet. The shaaks are the grazing animals around Padme & Anakin when they are schmoozing it up on Naboo.

1. There is a floating Shaak in the Coruscant chase scene, but it is very fleeting and needs to be found using a frame by frame mode.

2. The asteroid field dogfight there is a Shaak disguised as an asteroid. Also tough to locate. It's been hinted that it's got craters, but also has legs and the snout of a Shaak.

3. A myth that a running Shaak on flames appears during the Clone War.

the Shaaks were a big inside joke at ILM and they basically had a running contest to see who could get away with adding a Shaak in their scene.

I'm still looking. Anyone out there found one yet?

Vintage Kenner / Sale of the Century Update 11/17/02
« on: November 17, 2002, 05:19 PM »
The Ebay auction for the first 12 Star Wars figures on 12 figure back cards with bonus vinyl-caped Jawa and POTF Yak Face is still climbing. Last report had the highest bid at $8705 and since then it has climbed to $9100! This auction ends on Tuesday evening and there may be a mad rush toward the end. We'll wait and see and I will keep updating as the auction gets closer to being complete. For more information, see the news article titled "Sale of the Century!" on the main page.

Collector's Tips / Hobby Shops & Diamond Perviews...
« on: November 16, 2002, 01:16 PM »
I have found a couple of ways to get what you want pretty easily without all the searching and on-line buying. The first is find a local comic or hobby shop and ask them if they have a copy of "Diamond Previews" catalog or if they order from it. Previews is a collectors catalog released monthly with almost everything you could ever want and many times they have unreleased items that you can pre-order. If the shop does order from it, they usually will make your order for you and when the items get in, you pay for them then. So all you really have to do is fill out a form with what you want and wait for it to arrive. I've secured quite a few rare items this way and always get them in mint condition.
The other thing is to get personal with the managers. Get to know them, have meaningful conversations with them and make them remember you. It doesn't hurt to buy stuff either. Valued customers always get special treatment in these local shops and you can work your way to asking if they can get certain things for you. Or make it clear that you want to be the first to know when something comes in.
The shop I frequent has a file system. You reserve a file and choose things you want reserved for you and they keep them there. They also give me a 20% discount on all items because I reserve 20+ comic titles. I do not buy every comic that goes in my file, but I like to have the choice and this gets me to the 20 title mark. If you are not into comics, then see if they can make an exception for action figures. I am close to a dealer in my wife's home area that has POTF2 red card to current figures and he doesn't display them. He has lost interest and doesn't have a large customer base that are interested in SW collectibles. Every time I go in he pulls out a new box of something. Last time it was two vintage Vader cases filled with loose vintage figures and accessories. He sold them at $5 a pop, complete or not. He also goes out of his way to accomodate me and make me happy each time I visit. It's like he has this endless stash. I never would've known had I not asked. He sells every figure at $10 a pop no matter what and I am always showing him Toy fare or Lee's Toy Review to tell him the value in these magazines. He just says that as long as I keep buying, it all evens out. He just wants to get rid of them.
So, go to these places, be friendly, ask questions and you'll be shocked at how cool and accomodating these local dealers can be. I saves the headache of trolling through the pegs and never finding what you want.
Good hunting and luck!
