Toy Reviews / VOTC Leia and Obi-Wan
« on: August 6, 2004, 10:26 PM »
I've had these figs for around a week and a half, but never really got around to reviewing them. They got me enthusiastic about SW collecting again, and got me to start ordering figures online. Anyway, here's what I think about the VOTC Leia and Obi-Wan......

Princess Leia Organa

Sculpt: Sculpt is pretty good here. Some may argue that the face looks nothing like Carrie Fisher, but I think it is a decent likeness of her. The upper body has a GREAT amount of detail, until you get to the waist. The softgoods dress was a nice addition, and I think it is pretty well done. Under the skirt is just plainly sculpted legs (painted white) along with boots. Nothing exciting here. Thumbs in the middle.

Paint: Not much painting here, as I'm sure Hasbro used white plastic. The belt has gray buckles, and the bottoms of her boots are painted black. This was a nice feature, as Hasbro detailed the figure really well. The paint on her face makes her look like a doll of somesort though. Thumbs up for a good paintjob on this figure.

Articulation: I believe Leia has 12 points. Ball/Socket Neck, Ball/Socket Arms, Elbows, Wrists, Waist, Hips, and Knees. Yup, that's 12. The arms are nice, as you can pose her with her blaster in both hands, hands near her hips (like the picture on the card), or straight down at her sides (Requires you to flip the arms and wrists though, it's kind of hard to explain without pictures). I have heard that her knees are Ball/Socket, but they don't seem that way to me. She can bend her knees, but can only move her shins left and right. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Oh well, they just don't seem Ball/Socket to me. Thumbs up for articulation.

Accessories: You get a black, shiney Stormtrooper blaster, exactly the same as the POTJ one, which also comes with Saga Bespin Chewie and Admiral Ozzel for example. Her hands are small, so this is just about the only weapon she can hold. I would have preferred the long Leia pistol she uses before getting stunned in ANH, but this does fine. Thumbs in the middle.

Overall: Pretty decent figure for Leia. I see she is selling like hotcakes and seems to be the most difficult to find just behind Luke. I know why. A good figure that is well worth the money.

Grade: A- (A Minus)

Obi-Wan (Ben) Kenobi

Sculpt: The head seems like a decent enough sculpt to me. Looks an awful lot like the old POTJ Obi-Wan to me. The upper body has decent detailto the waist where the soft goods begin. His sleeves have wrinkles in them, which looks pretty cool. His hands have GREAT detail, showing wrinkles and veins. This is an AWESOME detail, IMO, and really adds to the figure. His belt has little detail. Just a buckle and a small hook where a Lighsaber hilt would go. Under the soft goods cloak are your basic pants and boots, with a small bit of detail in each (A few wrinkles). For example of this see a figure like, oh, um, Admiral Ozzel. His pants are similar. Thumbs in the middle leaning towards Up with the sculpt.

Paint: Eh, a decent paintjob. Like Leia, he was probably sculpted with tan plastic, and the painted the brown on him. His boots, belt, and inner shirt are painted brown, and his hair is gray. Not much else to talk about here. Thumbs in the middle

Articulation: Here's where it gets messy...... he has the standard neck articulation, NOT Ball/Socket like Han and Leia. Big no-no. He DOES have Ball/Socket Shoulders, but cruddy Elbow articulation. Once again, I refer you to Admrial Ozzel's figure for an example. He looks bad without the cloak when he has his arms moved to go straight down, but that's mainly because of the sculpt. It's even harder to put the cloak on with his elbows like that, so you have to move them into the straight position, THEN move the elbows back to the normal position, as well as move the cloth back so it doesn't look pulled. It's good that he can hold his Lightsaber with both hands, but I wish he had some better elbows. Add in the Standard waist along with Standard Leg articulation, and you'll get a Thumbs Down regarding the articulation for Ben.

Accessories: You get a POTJ Old Ben Blue Lightsaber, which is basically the only thing he ever used in the OT. And the cloak....... The cloak is decent enough, but hard to get on because of the elbow articulation. When you get it on, you then see how big it is. You have to fold pieces just to make it look movie accurate. The arms are big too, and the cloak as a whole is extra thick. Thumbs in the middle for accessories.

Overall: While I still recommend the figure, I would keep him on display, or carded. He is definately not a playable figure, and you see why once you take it out of the package. Definately not the "Ultimate" version Hasbro hyped it to be.

Grade: B- (B Minus)

Here is how I would rank the VOTC figs from Wave 1 so far (I still don't have Luke yet, so keep that in mind):

1. Han
2. Leia
3. Obi-Wan

Both figures are recommended by me. Hope you enjoyed the review.  :)

The Original Trilogy / Boba Fett..... Voiced by Jango Fett?
« on: July 27, 2004, 12:41 PM »
Yet ANOTHER crappy change in the OT DVD..... Boba Fett's voice has been replaced by the voice of Temuera Morrison. Also, they gave Morrison NEW LINES, further butchering the scenes.

Also, there are RUMORS that all the Stormtroopers now have Morrison's voice as well.

You can find samples HERE.

Thanks for screwing up some good characters, Uncle George.  >:(

Saga '02-'04 / Hall of Fame R2 question...
« on: May 8, 2004, 06:46 PM »
Okay, I finally found some new figs today, one being the HOF R2-D2. I was under the impression that this was a rehashed Holo Leia R2, but after some inspection, I realized that the HOF R2 is actually the POTJ one.

Did I miss something? Was this always the plan for the figure? Or did Hasbro pull a switch on us? ???

LEGO / Toy Fair 2004 news
« on: February 15, 2004, 04:25 PM »
I got most of this news from FBTB.net:

There will be NO new sets for the rest of 2004. After the Falcon is released, that's it.

The 10131 set was NOT revealed. It will be a Lego Shop @ Home exclusive (Like Cloud City and the Star Destroyer), and S@H exclusives are not shown at Toy Fair.

In August, Lego will begin coloring the minifigs from Liscensed sets (Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Spider-Man) with a peach tone, so they will look like real people.

-----------------------------------

Personally, I am a little disappointed with Lego. I'm okay with the 10131 and the news about 2004 sets, but that flesh tone announcement makes me mad! Who cares if the figures don't have a "natural" look? Now they aren't going to match any of the older minifigs! >:(

Thoughts?

He's coming in a monstrous modular bespin playset. There's a landing dock, dining room, two pieces of duel scenery, freezing chamber and torture room.

Figs include Luke, Leia, Lando, Han, Boba Fett, Vader and a Stormie.

Just watched the big unveiling at brickfest via streaming video. September-ish release, shop@home only, $100.
Also he added this later:

Well, I guess I'll describe it in as much detail as I can since my gaming companions for the evening seem to be stumped on how to get wilco working.

The components (in the order of unveiling):
1. Dining room. White interior, table, couple of chairs. Has only one wall I think, in addition to the floor. Floor and wall are both about 16 x 16 studs in size. The door slides up and down, and can be raised and lowered by turning a nearby knob.

2. Dark room. Couldn't see this one very well. I thought it was the room where Han was tortured and Chewie was held, but later, I think he used the same module to show the "Luke being flung out the window by Vader" action. It launches luke through a TIE Fighter windscreen and halfway across the room.

3. Landing dock. Sort of blah. It's got a bunch of those huge bricks with round corners like from the girlie faerie sets whose name I forget. Not much detail. That I could see, anyway.

4. Freezing chamber. Didn't get a good look at it, sorry, but I imagine there's some sort of dunking mechanism.

5. Bridge thingy where vader and luke duel. Looks good. Very good. No discernabled functions. Has a hand rail similar to Brucey Wan's, but it's much smaller.
Check it out HERE.

Thanks to Kris Van de Sande for the news.

This is great! $100 for a huge Cloud City playset, and minifigs galore. And we're finally getting a Brown Lando! I can't wait to get this! ;D

Saga '02-'04 / Best of the Best
« on: August 3, 2003, 04:02 PM »
I saw this thread over at RS, and decided to post it here.

In your opinion, what is the best modern figure (POTF2 - Saga) of each main character that Hasbro has made?

Here's my list:

Luke - I've always been a sucker for the POTF2 Bespin Luke, but I also like the POTJ Pilot version.
Leia - The POTF2 New Likeness Leia, (the new Saga Repack Leia).
Han - Commtech Han.
C-3PO - Removeable Limbs 3PO.
R2-D2 - Commtech R2.
Chewbacca - Saga Cloud City Chewie.
Lando - POTJ Bespin Escape.
Darth Vader - Vader included with the Saga TRU 4-pack.
Palpatine - I like most of the Emperor figures, but I have 3 favorites - Chancellor, POTF2 FF, and EP1 Sidious.
Darth Maul - Original EP1 Maul.
Count Dooku - 4/23 Version.
Yoda - 4/23 Version.
Mace Windu - Tie between EP1 fig, and Total Control fig.
Boba Fett - 300th.
Jango Fett - Kamino Escape.
Obi-Wan - POTJ Old Obi.
Padme - Droid Factory Chase.
Battle Droid - 4/23 White and Red.
Clonetrooper - Red Version.
Stormtrooper - Commtech version.

Saga '02-'04 / Best Website to buy figs?
« on: June 10, 2003, 01:25 PM »
I'm starting to get sick of the retailers not ordering new figs and Hasbro not shipping the figs, so I've decided to buy the 2003 figs (along with Ephant and the POTJ repacks) from an online store.

But there are so many stores to choose from!

My question is which is the best online store to buy the new figs? I'm looking for a site with many positive reviews, and fair prices (on the product, shipping, etc.).

Thanks in advance. ;)
