Watto's Junk Yard / Family Guy
« on: June 29, 2005, 07:53 PM »
I was surprised not to see a thread for this already.

Whaddaya think of this show?

I watch it, and get a laugh out of it, but it's not one of my most-favoritest shows.

It's indisputably a gag-driven show, not a character-driven one, and that wears thin after a while. It's just a bunch of **** being pitched at the wall, rapid-fire. Some of it sticks, some doesn't. The plots are rickety constructs on which to hang the gags, most of them far enough out of left field to give the viewer whiplash.

And the characters are just cardboard cutouts. There are really only two unique characters, Brian and Stewie. Brian doesn't do a lot for me for some reason. Stewie is the one character I like, simply because he's so weird and wacky and ... well, if you don't "get" his appeal I don't think I'll be able to explain it to you. ;)

I don't find Peter Griffin a sympathetic character at all. Al Bundy is a lovable moron. Homer Simpson is a lovable moron. Peter Griffin is just a moron, plain and simple. 100% pure selfish ignorant dumbass.

Thoughts?

"Each week, members of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club will have the opportunity to leave their mark on the Star Wars expanded universe. Fans can develop an original backstory for characters, creatures, locations, vehicles, and more seen in the Star Wars films. If your backstory is selected, it will become part of Star Wars continuity and be included in the starwars.com databank.

Each week, this page will update with a new entry. Provide a brief yet detailed summary about the entry's history and specifics. Peruse the databank for existing entries to get a feel for the style and depth of the text.

The story that best fits within Star Wars continuity will be selected from the finalists and incorporated into a databank update. The provider of the backstory will be credited in the databank.

Please note that entries may be rewritten to for style and accuracy, and similar entries may be combined. While the entry subjects will change every week, the finished entries will only be posted once enough have been gathered to warrant a full databank update article. Keep checking starwars.com for more details as they become available."

Yes you read that right -- an opportunity to contribute to official Star Wars continuity.

Watto's Junk Yard / Toys R Us merger
« on: June 26, 2005, 10:52 PM »
Link

From the front page: "Stockholders officially agreed to the merger of Toys R Us with a large investment group, and the deal is expected to be closed by the end of July. So what does this mean to the everyday collector and toy lover? Will we see a large number of stores closing? Let's hope not, but only time will tell..."

No matter what reorganizations go on behind the scenes, I can't see them retiring the TRU name. It would be capitally stupid to throw away brand recognition like that.

So whaddaya think?

Feedback / knashdx's feedback
« on: June 19, 2005, 10:52 PM »
Ryan sold me a bunch of his old Episode I and II loot at insanely, insanely low prices.

It was a lot of fun cracking open that red Episode I packaging again. It sounds so cheesy and cliche, but it really took me back to 1999 ... the halcyon days of my youth or something like that. ;D

Excellent transaction all around, and I look forward to next time! ;)

Hey Hasbro! / Super Articulated ARC Troopers (non-animated)
« on: May 26, 2005, 05:35 PM »
Right now I have two of the blue-grayish ARCs and one red. I love the concept and the characters, but as figures these really aren't that great. In particular the arm articulation sucks; he can't hold his rifle in both hands.

I want a SA version. It should also be available in a red variant so I can have a squad of blue troopers with a red captain as in the animated microseries.

Oh, and while you're at it, make some Republic clone commandos from the game and book. :P

Other Toy Lines / Chronicles of Narnia toys and collectibles
« on: May 12, 2005, 06:06 PM »
Is anyone else planning on collecting this line that accompanies the upcoming movies?

Hasbro is making various toys including

5" scale Basic Action Figures (Approximate retail price: $6.99)

Deluxe Action Figures ($14.99)

Basic Battle Scale figures ($6.99) (apparently something like the Armies of Middle-Earth series)

Deluxe Battle Scale figures ($14.99)

And Dark Horse and Weta are making some spiffy-keen high-end polystone statues.

Revenge of the Sith / To soft good or not to soft good?
« on: May 10, 2005, 03:00 PM »
So what do you peeps think of soft goods (the cloth parts on figures). I know this is near sacrilege, but I'm not a huge fan. Sure, they're great for knee-articulated figures that can sit, but for figures that mostly stand I prefer plastic. In my experience the cloth robes and things always stand up or stick out in some weird fashion.

For example, on my Clone Wars Saesee Tiin I had to safety-pin the back flaps of his tunic together to keep them straight instead of out sideways like wings.

And removable cloth robes never fit right and usually puff out making figures look like they're pregnant or sumo wrestlers.

Watto's Junk Yard / Quote Your Fellow Posters Out Of Context!
« on: May 2, 2005, 08:36 PM »
This is a very popular thread at the StarWars.com forums, originated by The Dark Moose.

You take any quote or sound bite from any poster and post it here without any explanation as to what sort of conversation they were in. The most popular way to do it is to make it sound like something dirty, but this certainly isn't the only way.

Often times the OOC quote will speak for itself, but if you want you can add some comment beneath the quote, as in my example below.

Remember: don't be malicious about it. This is supposed to be fun.

I'll start:

Can't get it to work. Odd.

They make little blue pills for that ya know.

Other Collectibles / Store Displays
« on: April 26, 2005, 02:48 PM »
I snagged one from the paperback rerelease of The Cestus Deception, a recent novel. It was at my local Shinders (combination of comic shop, bookstore, newsstand, and gaming). I asked if I could have it when they were done with it, so they stuck a Post-It note on it with my phone #. Last night they called and I picked it up. Easy as pie.

I don't actually have room, so I don't know where I'll put it. It looked a lot smaller in the store. ;D

I tried this before with Yoda: Dark Rendezvous, but the Post-It apparently never made it onto the display so I missed it. Now they have one for ROTS but it just has Vader *yawn*. Plus there's the space issue.

Celebration III: Indianapolis / CIII Loot: What did j00 get?
« on: April 25, 2005, 07:01 PM »
There's a couple threads for the exclusives, but here you can list all your loot.

I got a few freebies:

Promo Attacktix Dooku
Miniatures Nautolan Soldier
Dark Horse poster of cover art from ROTS comic trade paperback
Vader poster from Dark Horse (got signed by Randy Stradley)
56-figure poster from Hasbro
a custom CIII poster made by a fellow poster from SW.com
Cingular Star Wars photo holder keychain
Pin from Del Rey Books with a picture of flying Yoda with lightsaber, captioned "Read, you will."

Books/comics:

ROTS Cross-sections (got signed)
New Essential Guide to Characters (got signed)
ROTS Comic (signed)
Clone Wars Adventures #3 (actually purchased at Borders downtown; when I made a purchase at the Borders booth in the convention the cashier gave me a 15% coupon that was only good at the downtown store.)

Other:

Applause sculpture of the Han and Jabba scene from ANH SE.
Pin of Episode I logo

3.75" inch:

I totally cleaned up on loose figures, for between $1 and $5 apiece. It was glorious--I saw multiples of figures I've wanted for years. For example, I'd been looking for a loose Prince Xizor for ages, and at CIII I saw at least a dozen. Oddly, most were missing his cloak, and I only found one that had the blue energy shield things. I bought that one and one missing the cloak.

In no particular order (all are modern era unless otherwise indicated):

1983 Vintage Jabba (only $5!)
SOTE Swoop Bike
POTF2 Chewie
CW Kit Fisto
Teebo
Tusken Raider from the POTF2 Bantha Set
1978 Vintage Hammerhead
1997 POTF2 Hammerhead
Snoova
Xizor with cloak
Xizor missing cloak
EpI Darth Sidious (non-holo version)
POTJ Jedi Training Obi-Wan, with dark clothes and visor
POTJ Gungan Soldier
POTF2 Sandtrooper
Tusken Female (my third copy of this figure)
SOTE Coruscant Guard Luke (after I bought it I noticed the helmet was missing, but it was still a damn good find for $1)
Imperial Advisor Janus Greejatus
Saga AOTC Jar Jar
R3-T7 from AOTC Sneak Preview
Greeata from Jabba's Dancers 3-pack
Sith Training Darth Maul (tan outfit)
EpI Senator Palpatine
POTF2 Admiral Ackbar
Salacious Crumb (1983 Vintage I guess)
a battledroid that comes in half with a magnetic connection at the waist. The dealer had a whole bin of these for $1. Back in the hotel room I tried him out and was very impressed with both the magnet and the fact that he actually stands up. I went back to the dealer for more but apparently someone else had the same idea since they were all gone. :(

Tessek (the only one I bought carded; $3 with slightly damaged card)

I'm sure there's a few more items that I forgot. As you can see, I didn't pick up any high-end or particularly rare items, but I wasn't planning to do so and I'm very pleased with what I got.

Saga '02-'04 / TRU Cinema Scenes Sale
« on: March 22, 2005, 12:30 PM »
This weekend I picked up one of the Geonosian War-room packs (Nute, Shu, Passel) and one of the good Jedi Council packs (Mace, Even Piell, Oppo) for $7.48 apiece, even though the shelf tag claimed $19.99.

If you still need any of these sets, check your TRU and hope they're on sale there as well!
