The Vintage Collection / Re: Big Items of the Future!
« on: July 14, 2020, 09:05 AM »
This is my $0.02 on all of this.  The Barge is a very cool item, but hardly an item that I think fandom had been clamoring for.  I also think people held back on signing up because the number required for it get made.  I had quit Hasbro for years by the time they made the Barge, but I purchased one just because of the playset aspect and I liked the concept of large items actually seeing the light of day in this fashion.  I didn't get on board until the goal had been met.  I still haven't unpacked the thing because I really don't have room to display it.

As for Marvel, I can see a large scale sentinel being a highly desired item for that collecting base.  As people have mentioned, multiple purchases for this type of item for just display seems likely.  No one was buying multiple barges for display, only resale.  While the Barge got the exclusive Yakface, the Sentinel is getting additional add ons based on total sales, which certainly helps.

For Star Wars, I don't think making a Haslab 6" item would be the way to go.  Like others have mentioned, items like the TIE Fighter in that scale wasn't the best mover.  I think if Hasbro had went with a Death Star playset or some type of large version of the vintage Star Destroyer set would have been a much better mover than the Barge.  I personally hope for a Death Star playset.  I would sign up on day one for that.

When this auction popped up I thought of you guys.

It breaks down to only $278 a figure (plus shipping and tax!)

To be fair, he opens the listing stating he is trying to garner interest and to make him an offer.  The whole SDCC description, while partially true, ignores that the figures were at Target.  Granted, they were impossible for a lot of people to find there.  I had to get my two off the secondary market, but paid in the $30 to $40 range per figure.

I would think maybe $3600 for the lot or $100 per figure.  I have to imagine it did take a lot of work putting the set together.

It is interesting.  I've noticed some specific items selling for high values.  I have been selling off my Hasbro carded figures in lots on facebook marketplace.  For the large part, figures have been selling for what they cost back in the day.  I've been going in release order and I'm currently up to the ROTS figures on the Vader cards.  They have been languishing for a month at $6 a figure and they are in figure cases.  I have had very few things sell for above cost.  I have avoided listing on ebay for the most part due to the fees.

SDCC exclusives seem to garner big bucks.  For example, the two mini card figures from the Revenge of the Jedi set have sold for $500 each.  I always go to ebay before listing anything just to make sure something hasn't gone through the roof for unknown reasons.  I haven't been really surprised yet.  The original red and green card figures are still generally in the $3 to $4 per figure carded unless they are some sort of variant.  Even the old original EU wave of figures that had the 3D scenes on the cardbacks sell for all that much.  I got about $11 per figure for the wave of nine figures.  Good to know some specific stuff is selling for good prices for even loose figures if I ever get to that point in sales.  I just have what feels like a million boxes of stuff in my basement taking up space at this point that I'm trying to unload.  I just want someone to finally buy all this prequel stuff so I can move on to the 30AC and BAD stuff that people are more interested in overall.

Got hit with a 27% temporary pay cut this morning.  The company says they have a plan and think that with this reduction they can weather the storm without any layoffs - which is my preference anyway.

It stings, but since we didn't buy that condo this month, we can get by.  The pay reduction is similar to the increased amount I was going to be spending on the new place.

This next check will be my last full one until things get back to normal, my goal now is still just to stay employed and hopefully not dip into our downpayment money.

I feel your pain.  My company has done something similar for all of Q2 with a "we will re-evaluate in June to see if it needs to continue".  At this point, I am toying with a mortgage refinance with a cash out to build up some emergency funds.  I just want to make to the end of May at this point when hopefully things might look better.  I'm just glad my internet connection has been stable over the past four weeks.

I am so glad that the pain of acquiring things for me hasn't translated to disliking collecting. The peaks of enjoyment happen less often but I still enjoy it. I personally can't imagine quitting collecting SW over it being more difficult. I'd much rather get stuff here and there than not at all. Anyway, I don't really have a point to this post, just thought I'd share my feelings as there's been a few posts similar to Ed and Justin's as of late.

It isn't that I dislike collecting, I just knew once Disney took over, there was no way I could keep up anymore.  At the time, I was trying to divide things up by movie, so I would need need seven sets of shelves for Hasbro figures, one for each movie plus a seventh for EU stuff.  Same thing with lego.  Once Disney made the purchase, my mind kind of exploded that day.  I was just sitting there reading the news on Facebook and I knew I couldn't hope to keep up.  Hasbro was the first casualty.  Then sideshow (however I did preorder the Baby Yoda and did order the remaining BH figures to complete the set).  I got divorced back in July, so I had to move all my stuff so everything is in boxes and totes filling up my basement with no real room to display anything.  I'm going through the slow and painful process of selling off Hasbro stuff in the hopes of eventually make some space in order to display things like my vintage stuff and loose Hasbro stuff.  I never even got around to unboxing stuff like the Big MF from so many years ago.  It sits in a box somewhere.

I have kept up with Hallmark since I put the new ones on the tree every year.  The novels and comics have always been a big part of what I enjoy so I keep up with those as well.  I could really use a library or study type room so I could have them all on shelves instead of in boxes.  I really dig the John Tyler Christopher action figure covers so I think I have them all except for the B&W version of Star Wars #1 with Luke.  I buy the blurays in regular edition as my one to watch as well as the Best Buy steelbook to keep sealed and the UK 3D steel book since I still have a 3D TV.  At this point, I'm just focusing on downsizing with the hope of finally displaying what I enjoy.  Really not sure what to do with all the lego sets at this point, there are just too many of them.

I was only able to get the Target ones because I happened to find a store that happened to have a DPCI checker and they happened to have a full case sitting in the back.  Never saw any sign of them after that.  If that was my experience at Target, you can see why I and others are concerned about finding them at Walmart.  If they do end up on EE, that would be far more convenient, though I'm starting to feel like the entirety of this hobby is moving online.  I know its more convenient for some, but my household is not one that is very receptive to constant deliveries of toys at the front door.

This is why I more or less quit when Disney bought Star Wars.  It was hard enough back then with the black series figures.  I never found the wave that had Darth Plagueis.  That is probably the last time I actively collected Hasbro.  These figures hit a sweet spot for me, so I bought the Tarkin game and the first wave from EE.  I'm still trying to track down the prototype Vader to complete the set.  I hope I can find these as well, but I'm not going to stress about it.  I'm really just down to books and comics and the Hallmark ornaments in terms of active collecting.  It is a lot less stressful not having to hunt for stuff all the time.  Now my problem is I have so much stuff and not enough space to do anything with it.  I have begun to let stuff go, which is another long and tedious process.

I have zero faith that Walmart.com will ship me minty cards anyway.  I'll just wait for the Fall and hopefully be able to order a case from EE to get guaranteed minty-cards.

Exactly.

This is my hope as well.  I had to go to Target multiple times just to find the game with Tarkin, never saw any evidence of the wave of six.

I won't say they stole the delayed Force Ghost thing from the EU/Legends since I doubt many in charge are well versed in it, but back when they had the Jacen Solo turn to the darkside story line, Jacen killed Mara Jade and she left her body behind hoping that Luke et al. could solve her murder.  At her funeral, her body finally disappeared into the Force and she later appeared as a Force Ghost.

The EU just stole it from Vader/Anakin anyway.  ;)

Lucas muddied that one up to much with the special editions and using Hayden instead of Shaw.  Hard to tell what actually happened with all of that.

If anyone ended up with extras that they are looking to part with, please let me know.  I haven't had any luck and would love to pick up one carded and one to open.

I look at it as Palpatine was grooming Kyle Ren in order to possess him, even to the point of killing Rey.  When Rey showed up at Exogal, he was trying to manipulate her so he could possess her.  When a redeemed Ben Solo showed up to help Rey confront him, he sensed that they were a dyad in the force and was able to use that to restore his current body.

He lied to Ben Solo to manipulate him, just as he lied to Rey to manipulate her, just as he lied to Anakin Skywalker to manipulate him, and lied to Count Dooku to manipulate him, as well as Darth Maul, etc.

This is it in a nutshell.  Palpatine wanted Rey when she was left on Jakku, presumably to groom her to be the next Sith.  When that failed, he focused on Ben through Snoke.  I would really like to see that back story now since I think it has changed quite a bit since TFA came out.  When Palpatine contacts the FO fleet, he said the princess of Alderaan has disturbed his plans, ie. getting Ben to turn back to the light.  At that point, he figures his best choice is to turn Rey since she has always skirted the dark side.  Honestly, he would have been fine with turning either one.  It just goes along with what we see in the prequels, Palpatine was always searching for a better apprentice.  With Ben and Rey, he wants to turn one, which means the other needs to die because they are a threat.

Is there any example in Legends where a Sith apprentice became the Sith Master without killing their master?

I would say the closest I can think of is Darth Vectivus... he died surrounded by family and friends

 :o :o :o
Surrounded by family and friends? What kind of sith lord is that?

It is a bit of an oddball piece of Legends.  It is in one of the novels where Jacen Solo is becoming Darth Caedus.  Lumiya was hiding out on an asteroid.  Vectivus, before becoming a Sith, was part of a mining conglomerate.  He discovered a dark side nexus on an asteroid in field being mined.  He essentially shutdown operations and bankrupted a company in order to keep the asteroid hidden.  After find the nexus, he sought out the Sith and was trained by an unnamed master, and eventually became master himself, through means not detailed in the novels.  His Sith spirit inhabited the asteroid when Lumiya found it.  He had a force ability pretty similar to what we have seen in TLJ and TROS.  He could project phantom images that could interact with someone.  He has some interesting conversations with Lumiya and Jacen concerning Sith not have to be evil in the traditional sense.  Hence, having family and friends.  I haven't read the novels in years, but it was an interesting take.

I would say the closest I can think of is Darth Vectivus.  Not enough back story on him to know if he actually killed his Master to become the Sith Master or if he had an apprentice.  Since he was supposed to be in the Bane line of Sith, one would assume he passed his knowledge on to someone.  It does say he died surrounded by family and friends, so it does not appear he was killed by an apprentice, but their is no mention of him having an apprentice.

I think the major problem with the sequel trilogy is they didn't map out all three movies at the start.  Things like Rey's lineage should have been set in stone before TFA filmed.  While Lucas' plans changed along they way, he really didn't know he would get to do more than the first movie and made adjustments after the success of ANH.  Disney knew from the date of purchase that they were doing a trilogy.  Ultimately, it ended up where I thought it would.  I figured Rey would be a Skywalker as to carry the lineage through the three trilogies.  While not one by blood, she still adopted the name.  My thoughts after TFA was that she would be Luke's daughter and marry Finn, who had no last name, as to carry the Skywalker name into any future movies.

I'm a bit skeptical on the leaked script.  I think it may be a mixture of truth and fan fic.

I enjoyed the movie overall.  I guess we may see more explanation through novels and comics.  I would like to know if Palpatine was in a cloned body or if actually survived ROTJ somehow.  The other thing I want to know about is Snoke.  I could have sworn I read something post TFA that stated that Snoke had been around before Palpatine became Chancellor.  That is certainly still a possibility, but I would like to see where he came from and how Palpatine used him.

It took 15-30 minutes for the Mandalorian episode to show up through the roku I just had to buy since my TV is from 2015...I'm not giving up my 3D TV.  Not sure why there was a delay since I could play the episode on my laptop as soon as I logged in.  Other content was ready to play on the roku as well.  After Mandalorian, I watch a episode of Spiderman and His Amazing Friends as well as the old X-Men cartoon.  Pretty nice service so far.  I also watched the cantina scene in ANH just to see what had changed this time.
