SCI FI Channel is evolving into Syfy (http://www.syfy.com/)
Seriously? Syfy? All so they can own and trademark their network name?
What a terrible name/idea... ::)
and yes, I only started the topic to make the syfylous joke. :-[

It could be worst. They could call themselves UPN, or the WB!
-
I have no problems with the change. Branding is important. And it's gotta be rough for a network not to be able to copyright their name. It's not the best name, but it's fine.
-
I think they have a problem spelling Sci-Fi so they changed it. :D
So if BSG is done, what's the point? Oh I get it, a new name & a spin off like the Galactica 80's show. :-X

I still remember that Comedy Central was called HA! when it first came out....it's all about evolution - or something like that.
-
Interesting. I can't say I like or dislike the new name. Wonder what their other choices were?

CyFi
PsiPhi

PsiPhi
This would have been awesome.

Like Spike, didn't that have a different name just a few years ago or am I mixing that up with a different channel?
Whatever. Syfy isn't any better or worse than other brand changes.

The Nashville Network (TNN) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_TV)
It used to be a hick channel....

It could not be worst, it is the worst. That is awful. I like Jay's suggestion of CyFi better. I'd even take SF if they need to keep it short. How dumb.

LOL. I would have to agree that CyFi would have been better.
-
As long as they run some ST:TNG episodes somewhat frequently, cool... I would've thought, "The Sci-Fi Channel" would've sufficed for branding though, but whatever. They rarely ever show actual science fiction ****, so maybe they should be spelled wrong so you don't feel mislead?
-
CyFi is already a registered trademark.
-
If it was CyFi they could make the name blink back and forth.
By your command.

I totally agree with Jesse; they hardly show any actual sci-fi anyway, so changing the name may be a way of distancing them from their original intent (ala TNN to Spike).
I did think their little self-promotion spots were clever, when they asked "What if?" and "if" was part of Scifi. Guess they can't do those any more.
