Title: Masters of the Darkside
Post by: Scott on November 18, 2002, 02:11 PM
#1 Who has one?
#2 Did you find it at retail, and if not how much did you pay???
#3 Did you open it?
#4 Are the figures different enough to warrant the $40+ they are going for on eBay???

I don't have this set, I have heard the Vader is perhaps the best Vader released to date, but is the Vader different enough from past Vaders???

I got my set when they first came out. I got it at Wal-Mart for $14.99 I believe. (Maybe $12.99)
As always, I open all of my Star Wars toys. It is a great set. Maul is ina nice stance with a removable blade from his saber.
Vader is in a good pose as well. He has his hand out a bit along with his lightsaber.
I really like the Maul.
Vader, well it is Vader, but a nicely done Vader.

I would recomend picking up this set if you can. But not for $40.00. That is kind of steep in my opinion. But since it has been awhile that this item came out, you may not have any choice but to pay that amount.

I was never even lucky enough to see this in the store. >:(

Never saw it at retail.  Got  2 of mine on the secondary market, and won one from Brians Toys.  Opened one, got one MOMC, and another autographed by David Prowse and Ray Park.

I saw them at the local TRU but passed on them.Oh well if i didn't buy them for the $10 or whatever they where going for then, why would i buy them now for $40?So you see in my opinion they were not worth it for the first price.

Never saw at retail but a bud hooked me up for $20
They are both nice figures different enough to get but if you can use the 40 for something more important- do it!

This is the last thing I need for my POTJ collection to be complete.I've passed on it many times because I didnt want to spend $30 for it.

At this point, $30 is reasonable for this piece.  Unless you can trade for it.

Hello all first post from new person.
I have never seen the Masters 2 pack in the shops.
I have recently made it my mission to choose Vader when buying figs i.e. if there is a Vader I need then I will try to get him first.
This mission is nearly impossible due to the Masters 2 pack and that dang silver Vader that is far too expensive.
I think my only hope is to win them.

Like most of the folks in this thread, I've never saw this in the stores.  I managed to pick mine up in trade.

My recommendation to those folks who don't have it yet, take your time and be patient.  I've found that I stumble across the items I least expect to find, and often at a great price (trade or cash).

And remember, if you are real obsessed about missing out on in.  Try looking 1 year after E3 ends up on DVD -- I'll bet dollars to donuts that the MOTD will sell for under $20.00.

Good luck on the hunt!

Word on the street around here is that one of our members finally snagged himself one of these bad boys off of eBay...  Congrats!  I'll try to hide my jealous rage...   ;)

#1  I've got one MOMC, but need one more to open up and keep loose
#2  NEVER saw one at retail.  Picked one up in a Jorg Sacul trade a while back.
#3  Didn't open the one I've got.  Will open the next one.
#4  $40 is a fat chunk of change for this piece, but the Vader is really top of the line - the best one for an ANH likeness, and the Maul is pretty decent as well.  These are finally starting to drop down to the $30 range on eBay of late, so they're getting slightly more affordable.

But considering this was by far the toughest piece to acquire from the POTJ line, it's worth trying to pick one up just due it's rarity (NOT necessarily value).  I'm still losing my eBay auctions for these by a damned buck every time - I refuse to bid $30 yet!  $27-28 is my current max, which just ain't gettin' it done (for me at least)...   ;)

Some day...   :)

Yep, I figured I'd bid $27 on a loose set and I won since I'll throw the packaging away anyway, saved some money on a smaller package and shipping to boot.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2476&item=3103478891

I agree the Vader is awesome, Maul is OK, the paint on his head is top notch like the other POTJ Split in two Maul was, I don't care so much for his articulation but he is still a good figure.  The Vader alone was worth the price I paid.

I have one.  It remains carded.  I paid $40 US for it.  That included shipping and a star case.  I felt it was a good deal for yet another item never released in Canada.  No, I will not open it.  It belongs right beside TFV, JS, TL and DV.

Well, I finally snagged my second MOTDS (this one to open) several weeks ago in a trade.  Only cost me a Holiday Droid 2-pack (which I paid $15 for at retail) and one of the extra (tri-logo) Ep. 1 Naboo Royal Guards I had lying around.  Not a bad swap at all to finally pick this piece up.  I essentially scored it for right around retail, since the NRG was just a cheap throw in for the deal.

Much better than paying the $35 - $50 that they're still going for on eBay.  I'm a happy man now!  Just need that second Battle Amidala now to open and I'm completely finished with both my carded and loose collections!   8)

Someone hook me up!   :D

Never came across this set myself and refuse to pay the secondary market costs for it.  Since the Maul from this set is getting re-released on a Saga card in the near future, I'm hoping Hasbro will be equally as gracious and slap the corresponding Vader in as a Saga rehash sometime down the line as well.  It's definitely one of the better Vader sculpts from the pictures I've seen, and is worthy of finding it's way into many more collections than it has to date.  Here's to hoping!  Please prove me right Hasbro!

I've never seen this in any store back in the days.  It's a very cool package, and hopefully I'll snag one off eBay some day.

I picked mine up at a local Wal-Mart back during their release...  They shipped several times to the same Wal-Mart actually, and I saw them a couple other times at other places as well, but that one Wal-Mart I saw them 3 different times in.

If only I'd known then what I know now...

But I did buy my one, and it's an ok set.  The Maul's supposedly making his way to a card this year?  The Vader may not be far behind, though I'd rather have the blaster shot deflecting Vader myself.

The Vader's the set highlight by far, but he's still not perfect.  Probably the tightest Vader sculpt though, and good soft goods cape.

Well, I can now finally add to this thread as I just got my MOTDS in the mail today, courtesy of Brent who really did well in hooking me up with one. I think it's a great looking set. Extremely pleased I am.  ;D

This was a hard to find item.  I saw 5 of them at a Wal-Mart in a little burg town about 45 minutes from Austin.  Had no $$$  that day.  Stashed one, and came back the next day.  ALL GONE!!!

Well, it looks like all the loose collectors who missed out on this set in the past are definitely in luck now with the recent announcement that the upcoming ANH Vader is indeed the version from this MOTDS set, that many of us were hoping for.  Good for Hasbro!  I don't much care for all the rehashes on the way, but the Maul and Vader are a perfect example of the types of figures that SHOULD get "rehashed" and thrown onto a card, due to their previous rarity!

So is there anyone who falls into this boat, who no longer has to worry about finding themselves a MOTDS set for their collection now?

Post by: Nicklab on June 11, 2003, 06:01 PM
I'm still not totally convinced that this Vader is the real deal.  I can definitely understand that Hasbro would make the effort to re-issue it, with what the're currently doing.  I just don't consider the EE catalog that good of a source.

I would realy like to get my hands on this.  I never saw it at retail ro in person.  I can't afford the ebay prices now.  Maybe some time in the future I wil be able totrade for it.  I am going to disney this summer for my Honeymoon (2 weeks, I can't wai tto get married  ;D) and I am going to pick up soem extra droids to do some trades. Hopefully someone will be needing these for the MOTDS.  who knows I could get lucky.

I think that people still looking for this set will have a bit of an easier time in the near future, now that the Maul from it is out in stores, with the Vader soon to follow.  That should appease the majority of the loose collectors looking for these at least, thus dropping the market value down a little bit for the carded collectors to finally get a more reasonable shot at it.

Of the reissued figures in this new Saga line, these are the two that by far make the most sense!  Good choice on these by Hasbro.

Now about that KE Jango Fett...   ::)

When MOTD first came out,  I found tons of them at one of my local Wal-Marts.  I snatched up about 4 or 5 of them and eventually traded them off,  except for one I kept for myself.  At the time everybody was going crazy trying to find 'em at retail and here I was with some extras,  so I was able to help out some people.  Furthermore,  I think the MOTD is indeed one of the best two packs to date. :)

I had 3, two unopened and 1 that remains in my collection opened. I sold one to a frined and fellow collector for $20 and then traded the other for an Ephant Mon and some other figures I wanted. Bought all 3 at retail when I was on a work assignment in Jacksonville Florida.
Good set overall!

Pretty impressive to actually find these things when they were first released!  Very few people ever did, that's for sure...

This is still a very treasured and HTF piece for the carded collectors of course, but I'd imagine most of the loose collectors were relieved to find both of these figures getting re-carded into the basic Saga line over the past 6-8 months.  I'd guess that probably brought the secondary market value on them down just a bit...  Of course, the base wasn't included with the single carded figures, so loose completists might still need to go after the original POTJ item, if they're that agro for the accessories too.

Definitely one of the better Vaders released, arguably the best one, and a nice Maul too.

Just chiming in here. Found an entire fresh case one lazy day at Wal*Mart. $14.99 and only picked up the one, but it was a perfect card. Wish I had snagged a couple of others for trade fodder.

I saw these once at Walmart, bought 3, 2 for me, one to open one to keep carded and one for a friend.

Thansto the re-pack frenzy hasbro has had the past year+ you can have the same figs sans fancy base for $5 each....

Nice pickups there, guys!  Never saw the thing at retail myself.  So Austin, you gonna show off some more of those surrounding walls, or what?!   ;)  (or have you already done that in our Collections Forum, and I've just missed it?)

Thansto the re-pack frenzy hasbro has had the past year+ you can have the same figs sans fancy base for $5 each....

Yeah, that was a cool move on Hasbro's part, to at least hook up all the loose collectors who missed out on these two figures, especially that top notch Vader there.

Of course, the MOTDS carded version is still (and probably always will be) one of the nicer and more HTF treasures of the modern era.

I got this set when it went on sale from either Target.com or Amazon.com. I think it was available for about 15 minutes, because I don't know anyone else who found it. I'm certainly the only one of my collector friends who got one.

The real tragedy is that I'm a loose collector, so this got ripped open as soon as I got it.  :-\

if they released a retooled Vader of this kind with removable helmet and Shaw head.

Yeah, I went back and read that too.  That's from a time when this place was fun and modern collecting was interesting.  And I was foolish.
