Title: Not impressed with Hasbro this past year!
Post by: Darth_Ice on December 18, 2007, 05:27 PM
I loved the TAC figures, but hated the hunt the chase to find them most of the year. I know Hasbro claims it was the "coins" that caused the most problems. All I have to say the person incharge of makeing sure everything was running smooth, needs to be fired! Who ever this person was blew it and made it dam well impossible to find stuff! The lack of suppy of figures at Target, the over wellimg felling of haveing 3 waves hit back to back (4,5,6) and them 7,7.5,8 and hitting during the heart of the holiday shopping season sucked! Then add the peg glogging idea of SL drove me insane! The UGH hunt, I recall in one of the Q&A with the Hasbro Rep, they said their would be ENOUGH this year to avoid the problem of the scalpers buying up the supply like they did with Saga. Ha! How many of you if not for other collectors or just plain luck would have not gotten these figures? ME!!!

Now on to the year end exclsuives, one word sums it up for me overpriced and uninspired! The ultimate battle packs as where they looked "cool" with the exception of the Hoth Turret, what was so great about them? I mean I think a majority of us had all those figures. The AT-RT pack was just terrible and did we really need a new Arch-170?  Then the so called called Walmart exclsuives, repacks and over priced!

Get to work Hasbro, you are going to have do a lot more to get me to spend next year! try originalty nex year, it might help Hasbro.

FYI I didnt even mention the debacle of the convention exclsuives this past summer!

I do agree that Target, at least in my area, was pretty miserable.  But TRU and Walmart were phenomenal places to get figures this year.

And I think this was the best lineup of figures in the history of Star Wars collecting.  I bought about 300 30AC basic figures, and I don't regret too many of them.

Much of what you said is true, but isn't it the same year after year?  I mean, very little changes as far as distribution, timing, etc.  The usual gripes, IMO.  What's new?

As far as the exclusives are concerned, you can voice your dissatisfaction with your wallet.

I will have to disagree.  My only gripe is I just don't have enough mula to buy everything I want.  But that is just a personal problem.  Really folks if you can't get it at the retail stores there are plenty of other options out there.  There really is not much of an excuse to not get what you want if you are willing to spend a few dollars more than retail. It's just the way it is with this hobby.  You don't have to go to Brian's Toys either.  There are tons of etailers you could try, or trades, or classifieds, or even Ebay.  It's nothing new.  Unfortunately we can't get everything we want at retail.  Well some can actually.

As far as exclusives go.  They are what they are an exclusive item at a store.  Some are cool and some are not.  Just because you don't like them does not mean a vast majority do not.  I like the ARC-170.  I like the AT-RT battle pack.  I like both Hoth and Endor sets.  I have not bought them because of funds or I want something else more.  But I think they are decent exclusives.

I don't really get the ripping on Hasbro.  This is probably the best modern year for collecting SW items that I have seen.  Many will agree with that.  I agree it's not perfect distribution wise but it rarely ever is.  Personally I have seen most everything on the pegs this year except for a couple of McFigures and a few of wave 5.

I can see the gripe on the convention exclusives a little bit.  People were upset about a coupon or something?  I can't remember.  However, I do remember be able to order both Luke and the Droids easily if I could.

I think Hasbro was pretty upfront about the figure delays.  And the fact that they actually delayed the line because they wanted to get the coins right tells me that there is SOME measure of accountability at Hasbro.  Unfortunately it led to significant delays, but I'd rather deal with that than a whole album worth of bad, scuffed up coins.

And regarding the exclusives?  It was said earlier in the thread:  vote with your dollars.

I think there's plenty to like and dislike any given year, and really 2007 wasn't much different.  I have to say though, as a collector, I'll take 2007 over 2006...  I'll take 2007 over 2002, 2003, 1999...  These are all years I was letdown by either the figures themselves, distribution woes, or some other issue I can think of.  2007 was far better to me.

I'd criticize Hasbro on the issue of distribution...  Namely, I find wave 7.5 the biggest waste of time/money if you are already in a crunch.  The "point" of the wave really was lost when Hasbro was in a major backlog of product fairly early on in the year...  The repaints should've just been nixed, and instead of trying to fill a gap, Hasbro should've been trying to play catch-up on all the poorly shipped figures...

The coin issue is just one of those things.  "**** happens" is the best way to sum it up...  It sucks, it sorta screwed up the year's distribution, but it was seemingly a factory issue in Asia, and nothing more.  A mistake happened, and there wasn't a contingency in place, and that does suck.

UGH...  I agree, UGH is overdone.  I do think UGH was easier to find in 2007, but that doesn't mean that finding them was actually "easy".  It was just easier than 2006, at least by my estimation it was anyway.  The real problem of UGH though isn't always even finding the items, as much as who it attracts to the hobby.  UGH draws in the scalpers when they'd pretty much seemingly avoided Star Wars because it was found to be a property they would lose their shirts on eventually.  The line's more popular now though, and add in "chase figures", and we're back to seeing the greasey dicks rifling through the pegs for that "HTF" figure again.

But, beyond really distribution and such, I can't complain a whole lot (well, $7 figures suck, I don't care what anyone says.) ultimately.

In 2007, articulation was simply outstanding, there was a ton of great pack-in accessories this year, and figure choices were off the chart.  Cantina aliens, droids, JP aliens, Expanded Universe, Concept, Army Builders, resculpts that needed done, and more.  Paint aps and sculpting were on par with the last several years I think, and the figures all looked real sharp for the most part.

The 30thAC Legends assortment was even pretty decent...  Sure we can all cite pegwarmers from it, but ultimately even things that are pegwarming are selling steadily, at least from what I see...  There's the odd Leia Boussh (which had TSC figures still on the pegs so the Legends one was unnecessary I think), but figures like the Clones all seem to sell steadily, so it's tough to really criticize those too much...

Uninspired product, I don't know...  We went from at least 3 dozen of each Jabba Band pack at my local WM, to maybe a dozen or ten total of the packs on the shelves, and that's in a week...  Criticize it all you want, they're selling...  The ARC-170's one of the only things selling at Target actually, while the AT-RT sold after the sale they had, and the TIE Bomber is doing so-so...  So I guess, at least by my estimation, the ARC-170 was something we "needed" because it's seemingly popular here.

Target not having figures has indeed sucked, and I have no clue what's up there.  They've been real hit and miss though with distribution, but like others have said, WM and TRU have picked up some serious slack.  Even KM's done better at getting in figures though than Target...  They're picking up a little now though I hear, so that's something maybe, right?

I'm personally coming off one of, if not the best year collecting for me.  If anything, I could do with less in a year just to keep up with army building and such.  I mean, I was really struggling justifying some of what I spent.  But that's me...  I'd take 2007 with its problems, over many of the past years where the figures just weren't this nice.  Lots of great diversity in the products was great too...  Mandalore packs were cool, EU 2-packs, whole waves of EU figures, and things.  Not a bad year really.  2008 looks to be more of the same too.

I want to make Hasbro better! This is The #1 toy/collector line of all time! Maybe I set the bar to high, but I except Hasbro to think outside the box!  I just felt that this was the 30th and everythingshould have just not average but but out this world!

I read this topic post...and I have to admit wondering if this was Ice's first year or two of collecting SW toys.

Logistic shortfalls, no surprise really- happens annually but comes as a different problem type each year.

Not really much to complain of really from me. I'm tired of complaining about Hasbro's annual rerelease SW lines.. whether they are Legends, 'Lamest hits' whatever they call them- I'm just thankful they are not connected to the regular lines so I just don't even buy them.

I could see this as being especially difficult getting everything I wanted if I lived in a high populated area
where tons of rival collectors and scalpers reside, not to mention millions of parents that actually want to buy their kids toys. Thankfully, I don't live in such an area and I enlist help to get the things I need from other collectors and scalpers. By making the small effort to get help by reaching out to others I actually don't struggle. Besides, even if it ever became true that I could not get the toys I desired-it wouldn't be such a bad thing right- because at least I'd be saving some money :-\.

The new sculpts this year were better than any I'd seen ever, so I'd say the better quality toys way out-weighed my only complaint of the year- the Titanium line. I felt Hasbro really dropped the ball here by trying to bait me with 90% repaints in each wave- it's OK though because I saved lotsa cash by not buying the repaint crapola.

All in all for me a better year than most. This thread just seemed to be about alot of whining IMO.

I have to disagree on nearly every point as well. I've been incredibly impressed with Hasbro for three years running:

Large selection of figures
Large production run of figures
Superior quality of figures
Superior distribution of figures

What's not not be impressed with?

Large production run of figures? What? besides w4 and the SL ???
Superior distribution of figures? LOL! they were hit and miss for the most part, maybe your Targets and WalFarts have a special designation as stores that get their product first, but I think the IE sucked!
 IM NOT IMPRESSED!  ;D

This year had some very big delays as opposed to previous years but the collection/selection of figures this year was awesome! The year started out really slow the Saga2 the first 5 months of the year but when the ball got rolling it was on. Too fast for some but I did not mind that because I had cases delivered every other week, it was great! The coins will be missed in 2008, I really liked them a lot.

Ice, you should order cases online, that by far was the best move I ever made in terms of collecting SW. You will save yourself a great deal of headaches & gas, trust me.

My only distribution complaint is on Wave 5, that was non-existent in Chicagoland. (I am so glad I ordered 2 cases online.) I have to admit the SL line is really clogging the local WM bad, they are just getting Wave 6 now. Target had the dud exclusives & TRU was a little pricey but they had better exclusives in my book. TRU rocked this year in terms of getting new stuff, it's nice to see they are on their game finally, it's about time. We only have 1 more wave of SL then it will go away for a long time so we should see brisk distribution with waves once they clear out.

Don't be shocked if they turn up yet.  My TRU just put out about 15 cases of Wave 4 and Wave 5 on Saturday.

I've noticed this in the past.  A wave comes out, and you can find it if you look hard enough.  3-4 months later, it is everywhere in abundance.  I think you'll see it yet.

I'm seeing the same thing, and have found two entire waves in the last week.  In my book, I don't worry about finding a figure until 4-6 months after it shipped.  I just saw my first concept Fett (on the pegs) last week!!

I thought that this was great year, and while certain delays and HTF McQurrie figures were frustrating, look at what we got 30 years AFTER ANH!!  I can't beleive it's still going this strong.

Actually I had no distribution problems from my local Walmart, also finding the ordering online from Walmart I got my Malak and Raven and I think another hard to get figure that people were having trouble with I think it was one of the McQuarrie figures, I got all my McQuarrie figures from Walmart without any problems, my animated Boba Fett, most of the waves were hitting on time, if they werent there on time it was a week late at most, scalping at first I thought as going to be a problem but it wasnt.

I was hoping to see more figures of a lot of different characters, but we're just getting about 90% of the same figures I have already.  They need to make more different characters into figure.

I thought the distribution last year was terrible.  It was really hit and miss.  What was the deal with Target.  I used Kohls to fill in waves 5 and 6.

I wish they would dump the legends lines.  A bunch of repacks that choked down the pegs.

Yes, thank the lord for Khols I think the only other time I saw wave 5 was once or twice at TRUS during the hoildays, and then only because I got there at opening.  Targer was just horrilbe last fall/winter empty pegs.  And now we have the SL wave jamming the pegs along with wave 8 of TAC. I just find it strange how hard it was to find parts of wave 5 but other waves just glog the pegs. I guess they figured no one wanted EU figures.

Wave 5 saw very limited distribution over here in the UK also and we have only had Wave 1 of Legends.

Wave 5 was seen in low quantities in Woolworths stores and the majority of people seem to have picked the figures up from online retailer play.com

More legends waves would be good, although I'm only after the Sandtrooper variations and a couple of others
