I set the live draft: Wed Sep 19 8:30pm CDT

It's the latest Wednesday that's out there.  I think games start on the 29th (though there's only one game then, one game the 30th and nothing for 4 days or so ???).  I'll check back to see if I can't bump it to the 26th if it comes open.

Comments/complaints/suggestions regarding the settings are welcome.  I need to look back at the end of last seasons posts before I can say too much.  I know that I thought there were too many games but the guy that won it wasn't close to using them all anyway (and don't tell me there's no irony there).

12 team max, 3 guys in already.

Giddyup kids, only a little over a week to the draft and only four signed up.  Jesse?  Jamie?  Jesse?  Minnesotans?

If a guy in Texas can get signed up on time, there's no excuse for this.   :-X

Crikey!  I forgot all about this.  The Hasbeens are in.

Only six entries so far :-\  Anyone else out there?

Also would anyone mind if I moved the draft?  It's looking like I'll be at a Twins game on Wednesday night?  I'll do auto-draft and live with the results if it's an issue.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08

I should be okay with pretty much any night this week or next or whatever.

Preferably not Friday or Saturday night of course.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: JesseVader08 on September 17, 2007, 01:19 AM
I certainly don't mind.

Come on guys, surely there's got to be a few more interested.

Maybe it's time to post a call for entries at the top of Watto's?
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 17, 2007, 10:11 AM
Well there's not that much available for other draft times :-\

Friday and Saturday are pretty open for times but Sunday is the last day for online drafting.  I'm not sure why it stops so soon as there are 3-4 more days before the season begins and those were never there for options.  Thursday won't fix much for me and there are hardly any times available then.  Sunday has only 8 am or 9 am available.

So basically it's Fri/Sat if it's going live.  Again I'm the one going away so I'll happily let it go to live draft for my part.

Who is missing from last year's pool?  Jamie?  Was Mikey in there?  Who else?  And yeah Rob, if you want to post something about the pool, go ahead.  I've no problem with other people being in there at all.

I'm OK with moving since I'll probably be gone Wednesday night but I'm not sure I can make the move times either...its up to you, Commish!

i don't get the whole fantasy sports thing. someone explain this to me. in grand detail.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 17, 2007, 04:28 PM
We all take turns picking real hockey players to be on our teams.

Then we decide who we want to employ to garner statistics for us each evening.

Then the real life hockey players, play.

Then if they score points, we get points.

Then whoever has the most points wins!

Thanks Rob.  :)  I had no idea how this fantasy sports thing worked either - but always wanted to know.  Too bad I just don't care for sports...
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Carpeteria3000 on September 17, 2007, 05:43 PM
hmmm... that's how it works? do you literally go through every single player in the league or just the ones that people care about?
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 17, 2007, 06:46 PM
Only the ones people care about - you get a certain number of roster spots to fill - and a few bench players to rotate in and out - once those spots are filled, the draft is over.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Carpeteria3000 on September 17, 2007, 08:52 PM
that seems like a lot of work. i'd probably feel guilty and pick the players that aren't that popular, anyway.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: jjks on September 17, 2007, 08:55 PM
Sorry I slacked on signing up, I'm in now. Not sure if I can make whichever time we draft, but I'll just deal with what it gives me if I have to.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 17, 2007, 10:49 PM
I know it sucks, but I'm probably going to move the draft to 8:30 PM on Saturday night.  I don't even know if I can make that one either.

If there's a preferred time on Sat/Sun for you guys, lmk here and I'll move it there.  I'll have to make the shift in draft time by tomorrow night though.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 17, 2007, 11:06 PM
Sunday night is fine with me - but there's less than a 5% chance of me being around Saturday night.  If you don't think you'll make Saturday night either, I'd prefer that you left it where it was since I know I can make it Thursday.

Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 17, 2007, 11:20 PM
Actually it's Wednesday currently, isn't it?

The move from Wed is to accommodate me, Jeff (who's going to the game with me, I think) and Scott who has to work late.  I'm the impetus for the move, but not the only one benefitting.

Oh, and I was misleading.  Sorry.  I should have said Friday/Saturday night.  Sunday only has 8 or 9 am.  Blech.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 17, 2007, 11:24 PM
Check that. :)

I just checked and they opened up all of next week in the last hour or two, so I moved the draft to next Wednesday, same time (8:30 central).

All of next week should be open, so if anyone has a conflict there, we have opportunity to move it.

Oh yeah - it is Wednesday...

Either way, in all probability, Friday and Saturday don't fly for me.   :P\

Edit:  Happy ending I see.

Yeah, now we just need a few more bodies.

Jamie makes 7, my buddy Duane should make 8.  Nice to get at least two more.

Somehow I managed to sign up last week and not hit the register button, which Jason pointed out to me today. I signed up for real this time, but am 99% sure I won't make the draft tonight.

I'm home and good to go.  Sadly I have to do some stuff for work while we draft though... so if I disappear it's because my computer exploded.

Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Jeff on September 26, 2007, 11:00 PM
I'm happy with my team.. though that could fall apart quickly if I get off to a slow start like last year...

I've got three quality guys on IR for 3-4 more weeks and two more guys who are not playing (or getting way less minutes than usual) due to minor injuries (groin, calf strains).   :'(

I really don't want to see 3-4 of my starters go down to injury again, that was way not cool.    >:(
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08

Don't the teams usually show up right after the draft?  Everything is blank when I try to see them.

Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 27, 2007, 09:54 AM
You should be fine today.  If you were looking yesterday, your roster doesn't show until the following day on the yahoo scheme.  You can see it, but it's listed for the 27th going forward.  When you look at the 26th (day of the draft) nothing appears to be there.  I do that with every draft in every sport going WTF? until I realize I have to look at the next day.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 27, 2007, 09:57 AM
Weird - all my football teams this year showed up right away.

No big deal though.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 29, 2007, 01:47 PM
Okay, I'm a little confused again... on my Yahoo page it shows that Cammalleri and Visnovsky have games today.  On the Stat Tracker, it looks like they've already put up a bunch of points which is great.  But, it also shows that my entire team has games tonight except for Cole and Bouwmeester.

Are some teams still playing pre-season while others are playing real games?

(Edit:  Nevermind on that 'bunch of points' thing - looks like Cammalleri had a short handed goal taken away from him.  >:( )
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on September 29, 2007, 02:52 PM
Two games in England (Kings vs Ducks) that are regular season, today/tomorrow.  Everyone else is playing pre-season games still.  So (obviously) only Ducks/Kings will accumulate points this weekend.  Other regular season games begin Wednesday with a full slate next Saturday.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on September 29, 2007, 04:38 PM
I admittedly don't follow hockey as closely as I'd like to, but some teams playing preseason while others are playing games that counts seems bizarre to me.

Booo.  Heatley signed a contract extention tonight :-\  I'm happy for the Sens, but I like players in contract years.  He did ok tonight though, so I'll live with it.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: JesseVader08 on October 4, 2007, 02:31 AM
OK, you lost me.  Is an extension somehow different?
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on October 4, 2007, 09:55 AM
No, just crappy spelling on my part.  Extension.

Anyway, my general rule for players in professional sports is that if they're going to be a free agent at the end of the season, they tend to play harder so they get a better contract.  Guys that get contracts tend to relax a bit (many of them, not all) and maybe underperform.  I was sort of hoping that Heatley would go without a contract extension this year meaning he'd test the free agent waters or Ottawa would have to pay him even more.

Lopsided.

Why am I getting more lame trade offers for Crosby from Jason?

Kimmo Timonen and Brad Richards for Crosby?

WTF?

I may not follow Hockey as closely as football, but I'm not an idiot.

Well he could always be unbanned here and answer for himself.  Or you could post on the league page and ask there.  That could be entertaining :)

Maybe I will.  I just came here first because I got an email about the trade offer, but Yahoo's fantasy sports pages are blocked at work.

For the record, this trade offer is even more lame than the last one right?

I'm kinda surprised that Jay would do that to be honest.  I talk with him via email occasionally and he hasn't left me with the impression he thinks anyone doesn't know what they're doing.  I wouldn't make the trades you guys are being offered either, but it's also none of my business.

So Crosby had 2 assists and a game winner in the shoot out tonight, but my yahoo page and stat tracker read like he didn't even play.

What's up wit dat?!
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on October 20, 2007, 02:40 AM
It's the usual yahoo screw up ::)  It'll be fine in a day or so.  The news was all wonky tonight too.

Oh, I don't think shoot out winners count.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Rob on October 20, 2007, 11:26 AM
Yeah, it's fixed now.  And shoot out winners don't count, I just meant to illustrate further that he was definitely in the game.

Anyway, crisis averted, everyone's safe.

And now, here we are 3 weeks later and I've just had my third player hit the IR list. (Havlat, Semin, Murray). ::)

Semin is technically off the IR, but he's still listed as DTD, so he's still no help to me yet.  For some reason though, I'm not expecting to get a lot of sympathy from you guys about it though...   :-X

Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Ryan on November 28, 2007, 07:06 PM
No. :-[

It is somewhat of a stupid trade yeah, I can't really deny that. Sakic is my favorite player of all time in any sport so I guess I was just a bit bummed that I missed the draft and was unable to pick him up. I'm hoping he steps up his play here in the next 3/4 of a season to the point his stats get to about where they were at last year. And I'm so far behind at this point I figured I could at least have Sakic on my team. Feel free to veto again if you really don't think it is a fair trade.

Paul Stastny (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/4023/news) out with an appendectomy.  Argh.  I can't afford to lose my 3rd best player when Scott's already pulling away from me.  >:(

How do I add a player to the IR?  I can't remember from last year.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on January 22, 2008, 01:35 PM
It's at the bottom of the drop down menu where you move your players around; below bench there's an IR.  I went in and moved Statsny and Nylander to IR status for you though just to be helpful.

Be happy they're putting your guys on IR.  Almost two weeks later and Heatley still isn't on IR and probably won't be placed there at all.  So he sits on my bench for 4-6 weeks and I can't grab anyone.  It's a separated shoulder for crap's sake, he's not coming back tomorrow.

True.  You know we have two IR spots though right?  Three of your guys are on IR currently and you only have one in that slot.  You could move either Crosby or Lupul into IR and pick someone up.
Title: Re: JD Fantasy Hockey 2007-08
Post by: Morgbug on February 1, 2008, 03:45 PM
If you whine enough, apparently they'll put a player on IR.  Heatley is finally on IR status.  I don't know if that's good or not.  It freed up a slot but I'm wondering if it doesn't mean he's progressing quite as rapidly as originally thought.

Thankfully your "curse" only appeared to hit Lidstrom (who has been out for a few weeks without ever going on IR ::)) and Havlat.

Word is Lidstrom should be back this weekend, which is great.

Havlat though...  ::)  ::)   Why I continue to take chances on him every year is waaaaay beyond me.   ::)

Well my guys certainly aren't doing much to dethrone you.  Kovalchuk and Heatley in a slump; Osgood bumped down; Zubov on IR.  Blech.  A month is a long time, but I need my guys to step up here and do it quick.  You getting Lidstrom back won't help me.

I had dropped to 60 points behind Scott, but now I'm less than 30 behind.  Third place, here I come!  :P

I passed Scott for one day, but I'm back into 4th again.  Unfortunately I've used up all of my goaltender games and am nearly out of C, LW, and RW games too.  Maybe my defensemen will score a bunch of hatricks the next few games.  ;D

It looks like Jeff may have pulled off another winning season.

I've pulled back into 3rd again, now let's see if I can actually stay there.

Probably, but I've got a ton of games in hand.  My guys seem to be sucking too much to catch him, but I'll try.

I've got a ton of games in hand.

By my count, you should have about 30 games in hand so you'd need to average about 2 points per spot to make it close.  For that reason, I'd say that it's definitely not over yet.  In the end, even if my lead is simply due to "games in hand" at the moment and I end up falling to second on the last day, I'd still be very happy with my team...

I have only made twelve changes to my roster all year and 12 of the 17 guys I drafted were positive contibutors to my team the whole year (though I lost 2 to injury at the end).  5 scorers in the top 21 of our league, 2 of the top 7 goalies.

So, when compared to a nameless person who has had to make 60+ roster moves and only has 4 of his original draftees left on his team, I think we all know who really knows more about the NHL and fantasy hockey and who got lucky constantly changing his roster all year long... :D

While I certainly wouldn't say your draft was anything but solid, I'm not about to let that goaltender comment slide idly by.  I should have messed with the waiver priority and the only reason you have two of the top seven is because Jesse is crazy and dumped Brodeur.

Goalies were a ton of my issue.  Going by preseason stuff, I should have been set with Mason and Emery.  The former sucked most of the year, the latter turned out to be a loon.

I also got hit hard by losing Souray essentially for the whole season.  Some bad picks in my draft and a lot of good ones that didn't turn out like they should have - Drury, Nylander, Nagy.

I still don't think I'll end up winning it, Ottawa and Atlanta are too much in the tank these days and those guys aren't producing at the point they should be.  Losing Heatley for four weeks sure didn't help much either.

Time will tell.

I didn't realize Brent had so many games in hand - it should make this a little more interesting than I realized.  8)

I'm going to be the first to say congrats to Jeff on winning.  Looking at my games and the way some guys/teams have been playing (Heatley/Kovalchuk) of late, I just don't see me catching him.  So well done sir.   8)

What?  English is your second language or something?  Too warm, melting your brain in the interior?

I said 'congrats'; you said he may have won.  Your lack of manners and polite expression to Jeff isn't my problem, it's yours.  Don't be generic, be specific.  If you want to be credited with being the first to congratulate Jeff you should have said something like, oh, I don't know....congratulations Jeff on winning again not something vague that's nothing more than a simple observation.  Sheesh ::)

I still gots three days.  I don't think it's gonna happen, but weirder things have happened.   :-*

I'm not taking anything for granted yet...  how many point will you get from that Ottawa barrage tonight?   :-\

Not enough.  Heatley only had two points I think and was plus 2 maybe.  Nice, but that's been missing from him for three months almost.  Well, probably not really, but it feels like it.

Price was 11 minutes from his second shutout in a row and my last goalie game of the year.  If he'd made it, I think it would have been real close but my guess is you win by about 15 points or so.

OK, now that it's over, I can finally accept your accolades.  :)

Congrats to you as well for being the only other team who actually had a chance to stick with me.  ;)

It was fun to have a bit of suspense at the end, and if Ottawa and Atlanta hadn't tanked it so hard in March, it may have even been closer (though Alfredsson and Heatly probably would have just cancelled each other out).

Definitely an interesting finish!

I realize Jay's not able to reply to this, but damn him for passing me and Scott for 3rd place.  >:(  ;)

Sorry for the delay in formal congrats Jeff, I was out of town attending to some stuff.

Excellent win and I can only blame Kovy for the loss, I think you're bang on with Heatley and Alfredsson.

Also congrats to Jay for not giving in all season and pulling out the bronze, well done.
