Title: FFURG.com - News and Updates
Post by: Jesse James on January 14, 2004, 01:58 AM
Tooting my own horn a bit...  And Jason's (aka CorranHorn) horn since he actually physically posted this at FFURG for me since I'm a complete PC moron.

www.FFURG.com has officially updated with a new reference section by yours truly, Jesse James, pertaining to the PC Flight simulator game, X-Wing: Alliance.  The link can be found right here:

http://www.ffurg.com/references/xwa.htm

and here's a bit of a teaser...  OOOOoooo

I like to think it's a nice little set-up with pictures and descriptions of the main characters heard/seen throughout the X-Wing: Alliance Flight simulator.

The game's a great game, and a not too shabby story either, so it's fun to check out even if you don't plan to do figures from the game even.  It gives you a brief teaser to the game/story anyway.

So please check it out...  Use it to crank out some figures perhaps too.  I think some of those guys would be great to use up some Imperial Dignitary bodies, or Orn Free Tah, or other Senator/long robe type characters.  Just a thought.

And as always, may the FFURG be with you!

PS: Thanks to Jason (Corran Horn) again for posting it and always doing lots of work for FFURG.  More than I ever do anyway.   ;D

Jesse,

I'm always happy to post any reference stuff you have to share with the community. But please, don't toot my horn, I don't swing that way!  ;D

Title: Come One! Come All! FFURG.com FForums Are Open!
Post by: Jesse James on June 15, 2004, 12:23 AM
Hey Guys and Gals,

As I posted on the main page here at JediDefender.com (A thanks to the very kind staff/admin here for letting us do that), www.FFURG.com have officially opened the first ever FFURG FForums, "Where Customizers Come to Talk".

We'd personally love everyone who participates here (and elsewhere in the customizing community) to join up and help us expand the customizing community into a more cohesive group.

We're not looking to take membership from here though, so as the moderator from JediDefender's own customizing area we're happy to have you still actively display, discuss, and enjoy the hobby here as well.  We just would love your support over at FFURG as well!

The FForums can be found right HERE (http://www.ffurg.com/FForums/) , so click on through, sign up, and enjoy folks!  Hopefully we'll be the hoppinest customizing forum in town for all your customizing needs!

A big thanks to Jesse, Chris, and the gang here at JD for helping to promote the opening of the FForums. We hope to get the customizing community back up to the lengths it once was, but as Jesse said we would hate to see anyone leave JD. So make sure you continue posting away right here with all the great folks at JD and then stop by and say Hi to all of us over at FFURG.

Happy Customizing!

Congrats on the new FForums over there finally Jason, Jesse, Dan, and the rest of the FFURG gang.  Good start so far.  If I knew jack about customizing, I'd swing by and join you, but as it is, I just wanted to assure myself of a nice, low member # over there (26)...   ;D

I kid.  Kinda.  Whenever I get around to experimenting with the customizing, I'll be stopping in over there with great frequency, I'm sure.  As long as you guys can tolerate some stupid Customizing Newbie questions (or at least set up a good FAQ)...  Now if you could just ask Philip to move "his" entire Customs forum over to FFURG now, so all the good content could be in one place, that'd be a great start.  Yeah, I'm sure that'd go over well!   :P  Anyway, good luck with the new gig fellas.

...So make sure you continue posting away right here with all the great folks at JD and then stop by and say Hi to all of us over at FFURG.

And vice-versa Jason!   ;)

Although I've only made about 4 customs in my life and they are all pretty lousy, I went ahead and registered up.  :-* I make pretty damn good custom cards in .pdf formats though.  :D

I'll be frank on this one.  Honestly I will not visit this place,  I feel the customdungeon has been around longer forum wise.  I think they have business taken away from them,  I am also going to say it's cool, but there could be a cool pic of customs somewhere.

Sorry you feel that way SWCD, but with www.FFURG.com being the oldest (known) Star Wars Customizing Resource on the web, from its infancy created through the old email listserver (Still kicking, but something that needs "updated with this forum), I simply disagree.

FFURG.com's been the place the old guys like Stephen Hayford, Tony Collucci, Gary Weaver, and others really inspired...  Guys like Curto, Jason, and the other founders over there really just personify the Star Wars Customizing community to me, and that's why the forums were created.

Not to take away from the forum you mentioned...  Just that, as someone with 13 years in the hobby, they still weren't a site I was aware of even...  FFURG FForums is an attempt to end that, and to make a name for Star Wars customizing with one large community is all.

Bringing customizing back to is hay-days when the email listserver was TRULY a hopping place, like back in early POTF2 days.

I was simply giving my opinon, I know they are one of the oldest resources around, and if that is so why did a forum take so long?  I was just thinking over all of the sites, and after I reflected I realized I was wrong, the dungeon is more of a site for hrmm all customizers not SW ones.  I like it I will register I hope evertyhign works out it was only my opinion first time!

No problems at all SWCD...

We'd be happy to have you as a member over yonder as well.

We're open to all customs as well, but of course as FFURG's dedicated to STar Wars customizing as its focus, we really are strongly centered on that.  There are several generic areas though, so if you have other wares they're welcome to be posted as well.  I'm personally interested in seeing WW2 1:18 customs from some folks.

As far as why we never had a forum, they're not the simplest things to open and operate, or so I understand it...  So we have always left the old Forgotten Force Email Listserver as the means of discussion.  We're trying to get things to a more cohesive "community" rather than a single email server though.

Things are looking good so far too!

Customs talk has heated up...  I've been happy to see lots of new faces and some of the old too over at FForums!

Thanks for all you who participated and help make this a great success for us.  We're still growing but hopefully in time we'll be the premiere learning center for customs and interactive custom experience through the FFURG site and the FForum casa de conversation!

Thanks guys and gals!

Much anticipated around the customizing community is our Card Template Vault, which by popular demand has seen a grand re-opening at www.FFURG.com.

CLICK ME!  CLICK ME! (http://www.ffurg.com/gallery/index.php)

Watch your step as there's still some site construction, but this is a big event.

Thanks really going out bigtime to www.FFURG.com 's own staffer, Tim...  aka "Savrip".  Great guy, very knowledgeable, and very dedicated to getting the Template Vault up and running!

Enjoy the templates, and the hard work of others, as it is shared with all to create customs they can enjoy!  This is the type of great stuff the hobby is all about!

I do like the forums there a lot, but am disappointed in the lack of traffic that is there.  There's still a lot more participation at many other forums it seems.

For example, when I post something new of mine there, I rarely get any feedback, but at another site I know I will get a lot more.

 :P

Takes traffic to make traffic...  Customs here, customs there, it's all good but the point of the FFURG FForums Customizing Community is to bring all customizers together at a site maintained and moderated by customizers with separate sections for separate areas of customizing...

Do other sites have that?

The problem is, the other site you're hinting at mainly I think CHEWIE, is that the people there want more eyes on their stuff rather than to hear honest criticism...  They don't want to hear a critique, but just to get a "Very Nice!" with every reply...

The only way the community and customizing will grow is if customizers try to be a tighter-knit group.  It doesn't mean a site's forums like here at Jedi Defender aren't good for discussion or showing off one's wares, but it doesn't help customizing any if everyone flocks to one forum at a collecting site just to "show off" their stuff...

Hell, half the time anyone makes a criticism "over yonder", it degenerates into a fight between people, or it simply goes unnoticed and never responded to because half the people there don't want to be told they're not perfect.

Sad, but true state of the hobby that FFURG is/was trying to remedy.

That's why I love FFURG, everyone there is a customizer and you can really get some good feedback. I had made a custom ship a while back and I posted it there and I got some really great suggestions on how to make it better, I took those suggestions to heart and I like the ship soo much more now. I think it has made me a better customizer, I definitely have some room for improvement but that's what FFURG is for.

When I used to post my customs at RS, I would only get like 8 replies, and almost all of them would be "cool" or "nice custom". It was uselss many of the people there posted only for  their own post count, not to actually help the other customizers. Most of them didn't even do any customizing, they would just come in because it was an easy way to bost their post count. Of course there were always a few good replies, and those would be from people who were also at FFURG.

When fellow customizers help you on your customs it really does give a great sense of community; something I've noticed other custom boards seem to be lacking, except in a few core members, that also happen to belong to FFURG.  And no one seems to have trouble taking criticsm, it is so much more enjoyable when we can discuss our mutual craft and not have to argue about who is the better customizer. I actually heard someone call Phruby jealous because he made a critque of and already great figure, (that would have made it a perfect  custom) I'm glad thre is a site like FFURG leading the customizining revolution!

Viva la FFURG! ;D

SLC,

You've summed up nicely just what the FForums are all about. Not many other places can you get honest critiques to your work. Outside of the FForums, I only know of this very customs forum at JD where you can get informative posts in a SW-based community. As JJ said, it doesn't need to be about quanity, just quality.

Happy Customizing!

Much thanks to Jesse and the great crew of Jedidefender for this thread. It's a great help for the customizing community,

With all the new and cool-looking variations of Clonetroopers that are coming out in full force for Revenge of the Sith, TND suggested that we should bring back the Clonetroopers Casting Call for a second round. The idea sounded so good that we're doing it. Even though they never really close, I am opening up the call for new Clonetroopers of the Episode 3 variety for debut on May 21st, the weekend following the movie's release. So check out the Clonetroopers Casting Call for all the details on how to submit your customs. Thanks to Den for the good idea!

I think the Clone casting call is a great idea.  First because there's just been so many Clone customs as of late, but secondly because the Clone repaints are something I equate to the "astromechs customs of today".  Clone color variants are a great way to get into the hobby...

I'm glad a lot of new faces are trying customizing out by getting into repaints.  Some are simpler straight color markings applied, others I've seen have really elaborate markings with lots of realistic battledamage...  It's good seeing lots of new people try customizing out though, either way you slice it.

I agree, that's why when TND made the suggestion, I knew it was a great idea. In hindsight though, I've decided to push back the deadline for the Return of the Clonetroopers until May 29th. Gives everyone, including myself more time to get some more Clones done.

An update to this Casting Call announcement...

With the release of Revenge of the Sith now behind us, it's time for a reminder that next Sunday, May 29th is the debut of the Return of the Clonetroopers Casting Call. Originally, I had planned this to be an add-on to the original Clonetroopers Casting Call but I thought it be nice to see the ROTS Clones have their own CC, what after all the carnage they went through in the new movie. We even have a reference section up with some shots of the Clonetroopers in action, so make sure to Submit your ROTS Clonetroopers today.

You can see the Reference section by . We're hoping to see a lot of submissions so don't forget to submit them into submission@ffurg.com with a subject of Return of the Clonetroopers Casting Call Submissions (http://www.******* Here[/url)

As per the newspost I did the other day, www.FFURG.com is doing another of their Casting Calls.  This time for "Masters & Apprentices".

Everyone's welcome to participate and create customs of a Master and his Apprentice to enter for the event.  Submissions are due by August 14th I believe, which is also the day the figures will all debut.

So crank out those Masters & Apprentices...  Off the top of my head, here's some good ones...

Anakin & Obi-Wan
Anakin & Qui-Gon
Anakin & Palpatine/Sidious
Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon
Biggs & Luke (Empire Comics Series?)
Luke & Mara Jade
Kyle Katarn & Luke
Jerec & Yun

Basically, you get the idea...  There's a lotta possibilities here.

Well JJ's post is a bit outdated, the deadline for the Masters & Apprentices Casting Call had to be pushed back until August 28th. Many of JJ's ideas are sound and we're hoping to see a lot of unique combos. I have one myself coming up that I am curious to see if anyone recognizes. Keep in mind too, that the Casting Calls are not just for brand new customs you just made, but you can also submit previously made customs, so long as they match the particular CC concept.

Happy Customizing!

Yeah the FForums were down for a bit today. Unfortunately the SQL DB on our host server decided it wanted to take a dump and wouldn't come out of the bathroom for a couple of hours. Ironically, I noticed that Scum's forums were down for a bit today (sorry I still go there for the local reports) due to SQL problems and we just finished resolving a problem here at work on, you guess it, SQL problems.

To speak for Jason, I don't think he knows at this point Ryan...  They'll be back though eventually, just that this is a server thing I'm pretty sure and not on our end...  Supposedly some maintenance was to go on, and as often happens the maintenance turned from small to big quickly.

Hopefully when things come back up online you guys that visit FFURG too can throw your customs updates up on the site and all will be right with customizing once again. :)

I'm sure when Jason's around he'll catch this and update for us if I'm misinterpreting FFURG matters for ya.

See the post above I made...  That's the state of things.  They went to do upgrades, a short-term issue turned I guess into a long one, and that's where it stands for the FForums unfortunately right now as near as I can tell.  If the staff at FFURG could fix it Jason, Tim, and Ash would be on it I"m sure but it's out of their hands at the moment unfortunately.  Definitely BS with the downtime but it happens to the best of sites  too so this just sucks.

In due time it'll be back, and I'll make sure to post if I see it before anyone, but if you notice them back up and no post here feel free to update.  I hope it's soon too but in the meantime I'm enjoying just looking around here too...  Always good for diversity though, so this does suck.

Yup, up and running and nobody's more frustrated than the staff I'm sure.  That was some LONG downtime when it was only to be a short time I guess.  Annoying as hell.

Glad it's back up because it's just another resource for the hobby that I miss when it's not around.  FFURG says thanks for the thoughts guys.

I haven't been doing much customs watching but last I was in they were down (like 2 days ago), so I'm sure Jason, Tim, or Ash are looking into it Ryan...  I'm not personally happy with the server they're on but this is all out-of-pocket for them so......  You know how that goes.  :)  They're not a site that runs off sponsorship,t hat's for certain, and keeping FFURG independant is important and at the same time difficult to acheive.  They'll be back up before long so no worries I"m sure.

EDIT:

I was in last night and it was working fine Ryan, so we're good there again I guess.  Thankfully the front page there gets less issues.  As a resource I think FFURG's front page going down would just suck.  The FForums going down sucks too.  Thankfully I was in the midst of having my own crap going on and haven't been on the customs scene as much for a couple weeks anyway.  All appears well now though, so that's good.  Yay.

Looks like the account has been suspended.  I wonder if they didn't pay their hosting service...

Hi All,

Our webhost had a screwup and they're working out the problem, it might be a bit though. We'll be back soon no doubt, so keep an eye out.

Happy Customizing!

Jason broke it.

Now the truth can be told, I was applying a new layer of sealant on FFURG and accidentally dropped it. The site smashed into several pieces, but I glued it all back together, just don't point out the backward head ala President Skroob.  ;D

Hail Skroob!

I particularly like the giant fingerprints in the sealant now on FFURG...  Classic.
