Title: The Official I HATE HARRY POTTER THREAD
Post by: Darth Ghidorah on June 22, 2003, 11:37 PM
Am I the only one that hates this excuse for a book trilogy? It is apparent that these children have terrible taste when it comes to good books. >:(

Just had to get that out.

yah those darn kids...lame thread.  what would you have them read?  I think anything that gets anyone, not just kids, to read is a good thing.

LOTR series, Jurassic Park and the Lost World. That is all I can think of right now.

lotr and jurrasic park are both great (and so is lost world if you are referring to the arthur conan doyle one and not crichton's) but I don't see many kids reading them (the hobbit would also be a good one) but both seem kind of much for your average kid (10 or so).  harry potter is a good level for young readers and is enjoyable to many older readers as well.  I taught middle school for a bit and it was refreshing to see kids that normally wouldn't read anyting excited about books.  that in turn led to a lot of 'if you like that you might also enjoy...' conversations.  different strokes I guess.

I read the JP in 5th grade. And that was when Harry Potter was becoming popular.

congratulations. that's a good read for a 5th grader but like I said, I see more kids reading potter than jp.  my point is, it gets people to read.  and that's a good thing isn't it?

Yes, unfortunately. When I got older I realized how lame Harry Potter was.

I haven't read them yet and have put it off so far though I might pick them up if I get a chance and get my current stack whittled down.  my wife and and a couple of my buddies really dig them.  I wonder how many books it is going to be, if it will turn out like the jordan wheel of time thing.

Well, you might think that Harry Potter is lame, but there were 1 million copies of the book sold within the first 48 hours of being released to the public.  It must not be THAT lame I guess, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

If you don't like Harry Potter, that's your opinion, but apparently a lot of people enjoy reading these books - so I say leave them be.

A good friend of mine said she wouldn't read any books if it weren't for the HP's, and she's not the only one with this kind of attitude towards reading, so I wouldn't say I hate it.

BTW - I'm not sure what grade you're in, but just wait till your Junior or Senior year when you've gotta read a bunch of garbage like 'their eyes were watching god'.

I think that's going to be a while Brad, since I'm pretty sure DG here is 12 years old...  DG, if you think you're "too old" for HP, then we must have a lot of real weirdos here in our forums, as well as those of Galactic Hunter's and Rebelscum, since many members (and their wives) in their 20's and 30's absolutely LOVE this series of books (which closely mirror the Star Wars story line in many respects).

But I'll respect your opinion that you're not a fan of these, as long as you respect the vast majority of opinions from members who ARE a fan of this series.  Deal?  Good.

Yep, I totally support that you don't like them DG.  I haven't read them either, but only because I'm inherently lazy.

The only real comment I have is that far and away JediMac is right.  Age is largely irrelevant.  One of the other forums I frequent is loaded with HP fans and the majority are older than I am.  And before anyone suggests that these guys are both old and dumb, I would suggest caution.  The bulk have multiple graduate degrees and have some pretty damn big brains.

Maybe kid stuff, maybe just an enjoyable read.  But hey, I don't like Ewoks, that doesn't make me a bad person, does it?

I wonder how many books it is going to be, if it will turn out like the jordan wheel of time thing.

Actually there is only going to be seven books total. JK Rowling has officially stated that she wants the seres to end at seven. Question or you experts: how old was Harry, Hermione, and Ron when the first got into Hogwarts? Because since each book represents one year at Hogwarts, then when the series ends they will be grown up.

And Ghidora like everyone else has said, it's ok to voice your opinion about how you feel about the books, but remember it is your opinon. Don't bash other's tastes, to each his or her own. I also agree with the other's statements, anything that has made kids desperate to read a new book, can't be bad at all.

Oh and do you think they might be able to get the actors back fo all seven films? I know Potter has said he wanted to concentrate on school, after the third one. But I hope he realises that he doesn't really have the face of a star, and that these movies might be his only claim to fame. So he should contiue for as long as he can, besides it's only seven books. And granted they might not all make it to the silver screen.

Oh and any word on who wil be the new Dumbledore. If you know, can you also post pics please!!

I haven’t read the books yet, but I probably will soon. With these sorts of things it’s always hard to tell whether the work is genuinely great or if the huge sales are a result mass herd social behaviour – is it a great book, or is just fashionable to say you like it?

The sociologist in me would like to know which it is.

Hey, LJ. Harry was 11 when he entered Hogwarts. The others, I'd assume the same, which will make them about 18 when they leave.

And I think your opinion is even more worthwhile that you actually read the first book.  Myself, I think they are pretty swell but that's just me :)

there were 1 million copies of the book sold within the first 48 hours of being released to the public.

Actually. . .  One million copies in the first 48 hours is just what Barnes & Noble sold.

The publisher Scholastic is estimating that the book sold five million copies in the U.S., on the first day, and the book grossed more this weekend than the Hulk movie.

Harry Potter sets sales records galore (http://www.msnbc.com/news/929995.asp)

I don't mind Harry Potter at all.  Like what others have said at least it has made people want to read and may get them reading other books as well.  So, Potter in my opinion is good for all mankind :)

Thanks for thelinks Madman! :)

Jango Fettish if he was 11, then he should be 15 inthe new book correct? If that is the case then they should really try to keep the original kids throughout the entre movie series, as well as the adults. Snape played by any other person would not be the same. That is if they do all 7 books, who knows if they will, but if they do, keep all of the cast including the supporting characters.

This is cool though when a book and nt a mvie or toy stirs up so much frenzy in kids and their parents. Harry Potter is definately a good thing.

I have not read a book in years, I have always hated reading, my entire life. I just started reading the Sorcerer's Stone, and its a good read. Like others are saying, anything that gets kids and adults alike to start reading is something worthwhile.

When I got older I realized how lame Harry Potter was.

I had the same realization about Star Wars when I was sixteen. Welcome to the grown-ups club.

As for Harry Potter, yes; the books are evil and promote evil. J.K. Rowling is herself evil. It's all one unholy mess. Someday I might sit down, Bible at hand, and discover for myself what is so terrible about this series of wordy children's books that has people so hateful, but for now it's just too creepy to even open.

(Harry Potter: Biggest selling tool of Satan since the Ouija board and lawn darts.)

So, DG, what exactly is it about Harry Potter that you don't like?  All you've said is you think it sucks

I just find it very annoying for many reasons. 1. Those damn fan boys 2. It is a trend. 3. J.K. Rowling is a money grubber.

Why you ask? Because she is already rich from the first three books. And she wants to make 7?

That is not wanting to make kids happy, that is MONEY GRUBBING. And yes Lucas is a money grubber too.

Ehh..I'm confused. You like Star Wars for all the same reasons you hate Harry Potter.

Doesn't quite make sense, and Harry Potter is not[/b[ a trend.

Dude, no offense, but those are some pretty stupid reasons

1: There are people that get over-excited over just about anything.  For instance, people who collect toys based on a 1977 sci-fi/fantasy movie and then talk about them on internet message boards  ;)

2: The first Harry Potter book came out in 1998.  Its now 2003 and its more popular than ever.  That's not a trend.  New Coke was a trend

3: I'm not sure why earning more money is a bad thing.  I am willing to bet that JK Rowling has always envisioned telling the Harry Potter story over a series of books, not just one.  By your logic, anyone who wants to make money than is needed for a comfortable life, is a money grubber

4: Of course kids can't be wizards, just like people can't have jedi powers, have working lightsabers, and have spaceships that can travel at faster than light speeds.

Your kung-fu is weak.  You're certainly free to hate Harry Potter if you want, but if I had to guess, you're a teenager trying to be a rebel.  Right now everyone loves Harry Potter, therefore, its pretty easy to be a rebel by hating it

I read the first Harry Potter (the Sorceror's Stone, I think?) and I...well, I didn't hate it. It was quite enjoyable, but I just wasn't very interested in reading the rest of the books in the series. I do, however, think it's great that HP has inspired millions of kids to discover and learn the joys of reading. When these kids get older, they'll be more intelligent and imaginative; are you saying that's not a good thing, DG? ;)

Hey, I never liked Star Trek, but when I started watching it, I really enjoyed it. :)
