Space signal studied for alien contact (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/09/02/space.signals.reut/index.html)
Anyone here a member of SETI@home? I've thought about doing it for a while now but just haven't ever signed up. Having extensively read Carl Sagan this is one of the things I most looking forward too...I hope to all hell I'm/we're all still alive when it happens.

I'd love to see what happens if it is true that this is indeed an extraterrestrial signal.
I wonder how humanity at large will react to the news. What would it mean for organized religion? Politics/world leaders?

It could very well be the greatest discovery in the history of mankind.

Science fiction. You're right, it's crazy. In fact, it's even worse than that, it's nuts. You wanna hear something really nutty? I heard of a couple guys who wanna build something called an airplane, you know you get people to go in, and fly around like birds, it's ridiculous, right? And what about breaking the sound barrier, or rockets to the moon? Atomic energy, or a mission to Mars? Science fiction, right? Look, all I'm asking is for you to just have the tiniest bit of vision. You know, to just sit back for one minute and look at the big picture. To take a chance on something that just might end up being the most profoundly impactful moment for humanity, for the history... of history.

To be honest I don't believe the world as a whole would be ready for such news. The world's continual reliance upon organized religion and the belief that man is the highest form of life (2nd to god at least) would make it hard for most people to cope with the idea of life existing elsewhere. It would clash and even destroy perceptions which have existed for millenia and there are just too many people out there who would react negatively so such news. Such closed mindedness would probably be the overall norm worldwide.

Pffft. We get these all the time. It's when we start getting ALOT of them one after another from the same spot is when we have to worry.

That's what they were saying. When they get 4, 5, 6 in a row, time to start wondering (or worrying.)

Call me ignorant, an *******, or whatever, but when these things start showing up (if they ever do) I WILL be stockpiling Amunition and other rescources. >:(

I would have to agree with you Famine, look at how well it worked for the Aztecs when it came to the Spanish.

I'm sure some of you are SETI users and have it on your computer and thought this might interst you all.
The end of SETI??? (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/DyeHard/story?id=311101&page=1)

Hmmm, while a lot of that sounds true I hold to the faith that someone out there would intentionally make a signal that would be easily found and easily decodable
