Title: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Morgbug on December 30, 2003, 11:58 AM
What, you ask, it that?

Well, out of curiosity I want to know what I (and others) spend in a year on toys.  If you wish to participate and perhaps frighten the hell out of yourself, please feel free to join in.  If not, no worries.

Here's the deal:
Keep track of every penny you spend starting on January 1st.
-Anything that is in transit does not count.
-If you've paid for and shipped your end of a trade prior to that date, it doesn't count.
-If you have paid for something (item in hand) and are still in need of shipping, the shipping costs count
-for Canuckleheads, customs fees (taxes +$5.00) count, if applied to a trade of international origin
-preorders count if your credit card is charged after January 01, 2004
-travel charges (i.e. gas, bus, etc.) do not count as they are too intangible to keep track of (you're welcome Matt)
-all toy lines, collectibles, etc. that you collect are to be included - Master replicas, vintage, display cases
-fees for entrance into conventions do not apply nor do associated travel costs - it is presumed you would go anyway, but costs for items purchased at these events are included

These rules are welcome to be ammended as they are likely not complete.  I expect keeping track in this thread is the best idea, though it may lead to divorce ;)

Anyone up for it?

Sure I am up for it. It may scare the crap out of me at years end ;D  So anyway here is the start of my list

 Recons running total for 2004::::

I'm game.  Just toys and the like, right Brent?  No DVDs, CDs, comic books, etc., right?  I know a lot of people here collect those, myself included.

I'll try to keep count of the money spent on DVDs, Star Wars figures/vehicles, and whatever collections I pick up this year. I wish I could put a cap on how much I spend this year, but,  :-X.

Great thread Brent. This is going to kill me especially those preorders & custom fees! (http://www.snowtroopers.ca/forum/YaBBImages/undecided.gif)

No, I wasn't planning on counting comics, DVDs, CDs, books or other things like that.  That's entertainment, no collecting.  I agree we could argue the semantics of that notably with comic books but I was thinking more along hunks of metal, plastic and cloth.  I would have said action figures, but that could be construed to not include busts, Master Replica items, etc.

Given that so many of us collect outside the spectrum of Star Wars I thought it best to be broad.  It does look like a fantastic year for SW schwag but it should be a great year for other stuff too.  McFarlane, Muppets, Batman, LOTR, Marvel Legends, Kubricks, Mini-mates, TMNT, etc.  all count.

If you really want to keep track of everything hobby-wise, go for it.  I'm more curious about what I spend (I think I have an idea, but hope I'm wrong) on toy related stuff.  DVDs are my wife's responsibility ;)

I figured as much, just checking.  I think I'll do two lists: toys (and the like) and everything else I shouldn't buy but do anyway.  It'll be interesting to see how much I could have saved if I didn't buy any thing.  Probably enough to buy a small country.

[Goes off to make an Excel spreadsheet to make this so much easier]

Rough estimates I've done in the past puts me at between $50 and $250 a month...I'm game too though.  I'd really like to see what I spend, I'll guess at least $2000 :o

Great thread Brent. This is going to kill me especially those preorders & custom fees! (http://www.snowtroopers.ca/forum/YaBBImages/undecided.gif)

You know I had you in mind when I wrote that line (well, Bob too).  And all the other guys on The List.

I would guess I drop quite a bit more than Scott, but less than Dale.  $5K a year?

I already saved myself $179 by paying for my next case of hockey figures prior to the new year ;D but since my Kubrick's are probably sitting at the post office right now waiting for me, those customs fees will likely hike it back up :-\

Dale, should we report in Canuckian or US dollars?  It's more relevant to us to see what we spend in Canuckbucks, but it might form a better comparison if we use US?  What do you think?

REALLY scares me.

But I will partake.

Only 5K? Is that in our funny money?  ;D  I know what I spent this year!  (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/smilies/verbluefft/44.gif)

I say we report in both. CDN = US. http://www.xe.com/ucc/  Would be nice to see the comparison at the rate of exchange.

I do keep track, I have for a couple years on an Excel spreadsheet.  I only keep track of Star Wars and LOTR.
(My daughter keeps track of Barbie and my son does his Simpsons).
I've never kept track of shipping and all that and (in my spreadsheet) books and comics are included.  If it has Star Wars on it, it's on the list (band-aids, toothbrushes, coloring books etc..)
I'll copy and paste the list for just toys and props and see how it works for 2004.

I'll take part too, so long as the wife never sees this thread.  ;)

I'd be real interested to see what I spend. Has to be in the 1k-2k range. Yes, definitely don't let the wife see this thread.  :-X

However, I'll only keep track of toys, video games, DVD's, books, and CD's.

I will TRY to do this. ;)

Sure, count me in.I've lowered my intake on the hobby to only a few select focuses so my main goal this coming year is to spend  between $1 - $2k. Yea right.. ::) Still need to finish my loose vintage collection, complete my MOC ROTJ set and buying bootleg, prototypes and anything else biker scout related(slow process for me). These are what I'll  be keeping track of.

If I can manage to pull this off by years end and have any extra $$$ I'll then begin my Imperial Royal Guard and R2-D2 focus. 8)

Boy, you just got that one in under the deadline Brent!  Hmm...  Not sure if I'll partake or not.  With the amount of SW stuff I buy, it'd take a considerable amount of time to keep track of it all.  Not to mention, I'd be a little embarrassed if I came in "1st place" at year's end.  Or would that be last place?   :-\

Perhaps Dale might take me though, since he's got to add in all the damned shipping and customs fees though.  Perhaps Adam too, since he collects a lot more of the high-end stuff...

I'll have to think about it!   :-*

$3,895.00 for Star Wars and $1,640.00 for Lord of the Rings.
I do buy props and that is where the big expense is.  I think I'll probably spend less this year as I'm caught up on all LOTR toys and there isn't much left.
As for Star Wars, the Master Replica prop line up (so far) doesn't interest me (only one item that I really must have) and the toy line doesn't chew up too much cash as I only get one of each (unless it's an army builder).

In 2002, I spent roughly the same amount on Star Wars, it was only a few hundred higher.

It may seem like a lot of money but my girlfriends drop that kind of cash on leather jackets, purses, jewelry, make-up, perfume and what not.  I just choose to use my expendable money on props and toys....to each their own, I guess. :)

this sounds like a fun "game"... i'll try and keep a tab on my spending, but now that you put this idea into my head, i think i'll try and keep tabs on everything i spend this year, as far as collectibles goes. man, that's gonna hurt later on...

at least my last two purchases don't count since i made them last year  ;), otherwise i'd already be about $500 in the hole, if not more  ;D

and btw - nice score on that fett helmet, morgbug... that's a pretty good deal, i've seen that one sell for over $100 on ebay recently...

Total:                                                                                       $76.10

wow... "jim" must have been pretty heavy if it cost you $47.60 to ship him  ;)

personally, i was going to make my first post my "master" post, and keep all the purchases listed, but give a little update each time i make a purchase, with that purchase amount and the total amount spent in total so far. i guess it's up to everyone to decide how they want to post this stuff. as long as people don't start posting the entire list everytime they make a new purchase, i think it'll be ok. just imagine what some of those lists are going to look like in december!!

That was shipping (and goods) in arrears, not of Jim himself :-*

I would have used my initial post too, but had to bury it a bit, lest Mrs. Bug comes a lookin' ;)

I found the Imperial Dignitary and Achk Med Becq at Wal-mart 1/1/04, so year to date, $9.54.

For the past several years, I've marked an envelope with the year and tried to stick all my SW receipts in there.  Some get lost or misplaced, but it's a pretty good way of keeping a record -- and it's great if I find an item a little cheaper two weeks later!  I've never gone back and added them all up.  I'm not sure I want to know.....

I'm not going to update every time I buy something, but so far I haven't bought anything SW related - the last items were some animated clone wars figs New Years Eve, so I beat the gun on that one.

However, I have dropped $41.98 on DVDs, $20.19 on comics and $6.50 to go see The Last Samurai.

My new total:
$153.63
Added new Muppets purchases, as well as the Tatooine wave and two carded figures. I'm doing well on toys, but books, comics/magazines, and DVDs are on the upswing. Uh oh.

Question: Should we edit our posts, or just make a new post when we update?

Question: Should we edit our posts, or just make a new post when we update?

I think it would be best to edit your post & add to it or this thread will become very large.  :o
Maybe at the end on the year, we can stitch the posts together to be seen at the end of this thread.

EN.IGIGI Vator has a nice example above to keep track.

Now say you bought something last year for trading, ended up not trading it and took advantage of the Christmas tradition of returning without receipts.  If you use that gift card to buy stuff, should it be included in the total, even though you are technically spending last year's money? :-*

Secondary question:  If you buy something, say a lot of toys on ebay and sell a portion thereof, are you allowed to deduct that amount from the total?

Morgbug,I noticed something on your list, shouldn't your money be in CND,not USD.

Yes and no.  I actually purchase relatively little here in Canada, aside from sportspicks and the occasional star wars toy.  Most things come in from the US.  I can convert it back at any time using historical exchange rates for the days listed.  Currently the Canuck buck is sitting at around $0.77 US.

I wanted to use the number for a comparison with most of the members down here.  Dale will spend way more money than me anyway.

do sales of stuff deduct from your total...I actually stopped coming to the websites and stopped buying stuff because i found myself spending 500 in a month. I never found myself without money for bills, but it was getting silly.

I see that some of you are keeping a running tally. Are we supposed to do that? This thread would get pretty huge if so.  :)

I'm already at about 200 bucks, and tracking that has actually made me start to seriously ponder whether or not I should continue buying toys.

Not the effect I'm sure this whole thing was going for, but that's what it's having on me right now.
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Scott on January 9, 2004, 10:35 PM
Keep track just don't feel the need to post that you updated your list so to speak.  Maybe a monthly update might be in order???

What to do about buying say, Muppet figures, for friends in say, Canada, that you are trading?  Count them plus shipping??? I suppose so...
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Morgbug on January 9, 2004, 10:51 PM
Well, it's up to you really.  I'm counting every toy I buy that isn't specifically for my daughter.  I'm counting trade bait and any and all shipping.

I'm not counting shipping on stuff I sell because I'm not technically paying it.  For example, a bud in NC asked me to pick up a 12" Lemieux for him but he's paying for it plus all shipping costs, so it doesn't count.

Stuff I snag for trading does.

Au contraire, mon ami.  That is exactly the effect I was hoping it would have on me.  It's all of a little past week 1 and I've dropped well over $200.  That would be $10,400 for the year.  A little over double my estimate.  It is the sobering thought I needed.  Not to say it's going to slow me down that much, but it's made me rethink a lot of vintage auctions on ebay.

Unfortunately I just got hit with McFarlane hockey figures, essentially my best trade bait, so that adds a chunk of change.

If it's any consolation, you make me feel a lot better about my spending habits ;D

I'm not keeping track in this thread but on a seperate excel spreadsheet.  I'll probably give a monthly update.

Cool, cuz I'm selling a bunch of stuff, so maybe I can end up on the profit side ;)

Do we put stuff like CDs and DVDs?
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: DSJ™ on January 12, 2004, 11:14 AM
I personally think it should be what you buy for your collection.

If we include stuff that we have sold EG: to other collecters, garage sales, flea markets, eBay auctions... that would be another categorie. Especially eBay!

Heck, I can go out & buy a toy for say $9.99 & turn around & flog it on eBay for 3 times the amount. That would be unfair to other members.

Well, out of curiosity I want to know what I (and others) spend in a year on toys. Keep track of every penny you spend starting on January 1st.

Now if you bought it for your collection then later down the road you decided you did not want it, any monies above the actual cost should not be included IMHO.

Do we put stuff like CDs and DVDs?

Not from what Brent said.

I am, but keeping them seperate.  Toys on one spreadsheet and DVDS, CDs, books, etc. on another.
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Morgbug on January 12, 2004, 11:43 AM
Well, I'm counting whatever I buy, toy-wise.  I just snagged an Acklay the other day.  I don't need it, I already have one, but it is for trading, so I laid out cash to get something for trade bait, therefore it is going to toys.

Same with McFarlane sportspick variants.  I'm not keeping any of the Gaborik variants I'm getting but I am trading them to get stuff I want, so they count.  After all, I paid to get them.  I'm not necessarily keeping many of them at all, but all are being used to trade for stuff I want so I think their value should count.

As far as Ebay stuff goes, that's up to you.  I'm just trying to keep track of every dollar I spend on toys/collectibles so I have an idea what I spend.  Anything I earn from sales on ebay goes (predominantly) into my paypal account that gets turned around on toys anyway.  So even if I buy something at retail, triple its value, I'm likely to spend that money on my collection.

I don't think it's fair to credit my 'tab' without taking into account the cost of getting that item in the first place.  Theoretically you could take that profit margin and pay down your mortgage sooner.  Theoretically.  If you do that, feel free to credit your account.  I know I won't.

Just toys, busts, props, replicas.  comics, DVDs, CDs, stereo equipment, etc don't count for this.  By all means, be like Mikey ;D and keep track if you want to see what you spend on 'disposable' items, but I didn't intend for that here.

I'm not expecting any declarations of income, profit or otherwise.  What you spend is what you spend.  Where the money comes from is your business.  If you know a great way to turn small dollars into big dollars on ebay, go for it.  If you rob a bank, hey, that's up to you, but I expect when/if they catch you, your toys won't be going to the hoosegow with you :-*

Is the person who spends the most "Winning"? I wouldn't really think of it that way.  :)

I'm just posting my purchases in my own excel spreadsheet. I'll post the results at the end of the year, or maybe in a couple of months or something as an update. I don't see any reason to post here every single time I buy something all year long. That's just a little too scary.

Besides, as I said earlier...this thread has actually caused me to SERIOUSLY rethink my collecting. I'm weighing the pros and cons of the issue right now, but I did some math and realize I can save a LOT of money (or buy some more adult stuff) if I just lay off the toys.

okay, i decided to just go with a "monthly recap" of sorts, instead of posting every time i bought something new - which seemed to be everyday for a while  ;D

so, here's january 2004:
1/2 - $303 - various momc/loose figures and ships from rebelscum forums
1/7 - $60.33 - 12" biker scout and 12" ewok 2-pack

1/22 - $18 - even more figures from someone @rebelscum forums
1/24 - $30 - wave 1 animated clone wars from target

monthly total for january - $644.98
year to date total - $644.98

I've spent WAY too much money so far.... On the plus side, I'm caught up on United Cutlery LOTR, and now have a complete Kubrick collection. I even have enough to preorder 6 more items from United Cutlery.

The bad side, well, my collection is pretty darn small and getting smaller. I may be selling my LEGO collection if the right offer comes my way.

I think I may go over to prop collecting, but continue collecting Star Wars Kubricks and Mini Busts. I guess I'll see how it goes.

Since January is over, I'll give my monthly totals.

Toys:
$93.04

Comic books/DVDS/Magazines/Books and the like:
$349.91

My toy count is low because I haven't received any shipments yet from Kebco.  That number will skyrocket next month as I have a huge list of pending items just waiting to be shipped.

All in all, not too bad.

Should I add that to my total?  :)
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: JediMAC on February 18, 2004, 06:08 PM
Yeah, I'd say you should add that in here Josh, even if it's only an indirect cost...

You can just pro-rate the total cost of the house against the "Star Wars room's" square footage as a percentage of the total square footage of the entire house.

So, did you take a picture of said room?  Are you actually house hunting right now?

Ok, I was kidding.

Do not count your house or any part thereof, regardless of where you store your star wars items.

Do not count shelving, how you display your figures is up to you.

Count only the collectible items and any associated costs.  If you buy something sealed in a plexiglass case and you have to pay for the case, count it, otherwise don't :-*

January total $479.45

February total $541.25 (without Kubrick R2)

Total thus far:  $1020.70

Projected total: $5000

So I'm a little over target at the moment but there's a lot of trade bait in my totals, so...

Jan: $200
Feb: $204 (I counted R2 Kubrick cause I paid already :-\)

Doing pretty well, I'm counting sales because most of that money gets turned around for more stuff anyway...

You scare me Adam...   :P

I haven't really participated in this thread since it's generally too hard for me to keep track of what I'm buying for myself, versus what I'm buying for others.  But I can say this much, all I've really bought for myself this year is the CW animated wave 2, the Ultra Jabba and Bubo, and the lame Burger King cup sets.  2 of each, as usual.  Couple HOF figures too.  So that puts me at roughly $158 for all of that.  I've picked up a few army/diorama building straggler figures during that time, and traded for some more of the same ($52 worth of POTF2) from rebeltrader - so my paltry total for this pathetic year would probably be around $235.   :-\  I've probably spent at least 10x that amount on other people though!  Hell, if I can't find stuff for myself, at least I can keep hunting for my buddies here!   8)

I'd be more than happy if my total was MUCH higher than that, but there just hasn't been anything new (or even old) in any SoCal retail stores ALL YEAR.  It's getting beyond frustrating.  Fortunately, I at least found my necessary share of the Hoth and Jedi Luke waves back in 2003.  Haven't seen either of the subsequent waves though, so there's really not much for me to tack onto my total.  I did technically pre-order the Code 3 X-Wing several months ago, and they've just started billing me for it last month ($59), but since I haven't decided if I'm going to actually pick it up from them or just cancel it, I'm not adding it to my tally just yet!

Basically, the last couple of months has been about the worst collecting period for me since the modern SW era began.  Totally sucks.  How 'bout some new stuff, dammit!  Figures, Legos, Kubricks.  Anything!!!   >:(  Hell, I'd even take some exclusives at this point...   ::)

You scare me too Adam, but more power to you if you can afford it...and you have a collection you enjoy.

I've also haven't posted my totals here yet, but since I'm keeping track of them this year in a spreadsheet anyways, I just as well post them.  My wife wanted me to keep track "so I realize what I actually spend on that stuff".  :)  Jan/Feb were a little higher than she/we liked, but I told her it evens out throughout the year.  I personally haven't found anything new since the last week of Jan/first week of Feb.  Thanks to some much appreciated help from Matt (JediMAC) I have been able to get a few other things though.  Here's my rundown so far this year (without tax added in I guess, can't remember that):

January
R-3PO - $4.99
Animated Wave 1 - $6.99 each=$27.96

February
Luke Skywalker - Hoth Attack - $4.99
Luke Skywalker - Jabba's Palace - $4.99
R2-D2 - Jabba's Sail Barge - $4.99
R1-G4 - Tatooine Transaction - $4.99
Animated CW Wave 2 - $6.99 each=$27.96
Ultra Wampa - $9.99
SA Clone - $4.99
ROTJ Burger King Glasses (ebay) - $18.50

 Total= $114.35

Other than that, I haven't found anything for quite some time Star Wars-wise.  I'm really hoping to find a Jabba and Skiff Lando sometime soon, as well as the rest of their waves if possible.  It seems like many of us are going through a dry spell in our areas though, hopefully things will pick up soon.  I did receive the Chewie/Luke Unleashed...but paid for them last year so I didn't count it on the spreadsheet.  I just wanted to start fresh and see what the spending was for 2004.  I'm happy things are coming out/being found quickly this year...but every time another wave is found somewhere, I feel a little more behind :P.  Overall, my wife isn't too crazy about my total, so I'm laying off vintage loose figures and ebay purchases...and just sticking to modern stuff for now.  I guess I did also purchase a Zipline Batman (had to have a Batman) that isn't included on there...I think it was about $7.  Good luck to everyone, hopefully stuff starts showing up soon.

I made quite a few large purchases in January and almost hit that 1000 dollar mark. However, I've slowed down the last two months quite a bit. I'm at about 1500 as of Friday. I estimated I'd spend about 4000 bucks this year, and I still hope to keep it around or below that.

Time will tell....but like I said, this thread has been a real eye opener.

And Adam, you GO.   :)

I'm completely messed up this month.  I kept track, but lost it after the ssw.com debacle.  I know I got my biker chicks ($51) and shipped a few things, but my ebay stuff is starting to blend in.  I've got to add in some stuff for Scott and Jim plus that shipping and other trade shipping.  I guess I'll just put in the ssw.com stuff as well.

I updated my list with what I remember getting and but used a general dollar amount for the items I probally need to add a few more dollars.  I have decided also to stop collecting the figures for now and only getting the Bust and eventually MR props since I don't have the room right now to get all of the stuff Hasbro releases.  I'm planning on getting the Vintage Figures for OTC and other special items like the CLone Trooper Figure but decided that I should save up my money for C3 and eventually moving out of my parent's house and since I don't make that much the toy buying has got to go, for now at least.  Hopefully by the time Ep3 comes out I will have enough money then and space to start up again.

april was another relatively slow month for me - my lowest monthly total so far this year - mostly trading to get some new stuff, as it damn near impossible to find anything new around my area.

even though we are only four months into the new year, this tracking has certainly been an eye opener, at least for me. i knew that i spent a lot of money on my collection, but i just never really knew how much. and i'm sure that there are probably a few things here and there that i forgot to record, so this total is probably a little light.

My girlfriend picked up Part 1 and Part 2 of the 'Last Man Standing' Empire storyline... So I had to 'pay her back' by going to Victoria's Secret and buying her some kinda lotion stuff - where the saleslady conned me into buying all kinds of crap "for a better deal"... By my estimate, I 'paid her back' about $10 for two comics. Yay.  ::)

Thank goodness I was selling on ebay at the same time:

Anyhoo, annual total thus far is $2695.82 (doesn't include the $100 I dropped on a golf club).

Still, I think I may look away from ebay buying for a month or so ::)

Congrats to Adam on finally finding that Fett cel and finishing his collection of those off!   8)

check it out here (http://www.jeremybulloch.com/flyingsolo.asp) - only because fett's my favorite character. anybody else i would have passed at that price. and it's actually a great read, covers his convention appearances from 1981 to the present, some really funny stories in there.

how many of these cells were there altogether? if i'm even thinking about the same ones.... i have a few on them, if i am. i have a fett with some stormtroopers in the background, some stormtroopers riding this ship, and one with r2 and 3p0 all from the droids series. are these the same ones?

These are from the OT films, each comes in a small acrylic case with a cardboard insert, kind of like a collector card, surround the cel. They are the Willitt's Designs 70mm Film Cel Collectables, a lot of which are ultra cheap on eBay.

If memory serves, there are 12 ANH, 2 sets of 11 ESB (set A and set B) along with four SE ESB, and 12 ROTJ along with 1 SE ROTJ. The only difference between the ESB A and B sets are the cardbacks. They are really cool pieces, and I'm so relieved that I may potentially be finished with the collection; assuming the piece arrives lol

Finally bought my first toys for June (Muppets Series 7).  My consumption has really slown down since the dry spell hit my area, but I've still spent WAY more in the first 6 months of the year than I ever thought I would.

I still have to buy a bunch of shelves and set up my new Star Wars room (everything is in boxes). I can't remember if that counts in this section or not.  ;D

Providing I can stay off ebay tonight, June's total is:

$$654.94

Year to date total:

$$3898.23 :o

that should probably be downgraded by a couple of hundred, considering Andy is a dick and I sent some stuff to Dale to cover the Early bird set.  But I probably missed some stuff, so I'll leave it as is.

Not much left in Vintage now, two biggies (Yak Face, blue snags) and then a big slow down should occur.  I hope :-\

Hoping to trade my old SW and McFarlane stuff for all the OTC/VOTC needs.

well, i knew that it wouldn't last. the yearly estimate, that is. looking at this, would it be safe to estimate that i'll be spending $7000 this year?? that seems ridiculous to me, but since i spent $3500 over the first 6 months, and there are a lot of things being released later this year i want... i'll just have to wait and see. plus, if sws.com keeps "finding" all these neat things in the lucasfillm archives, there's no telling where my spending will end up.

This is the first time I have really kept track of my collecting spending, and it has been a little surprising to me.  I have always assumed I spent around $30/month, but this year has been higher than that.  I'm nowhere in the same league as some others I know, but still higher than I thought it would be I guess.  June and July have been larger months than usual for me though, so that doesn't help things any:

June Purchases
Captain Antilles - $4.99
Tie Fighter Pilot - $4.99
Tanus Spijek - $4.99
Han Solo (AT-ST) - $6.00
General Madine - $6.00
Bossk - $6.00
Dengar - $6.00
Princess Leia w/Glass - $9.99
**Non Star Wars**
Gandalf the White - $6.99
Pippin in Armor - $6.99
Gimli - $5.88
Spider-Man 2 Magnetic Spidey - $6.00
Spider-Man Classics Black Spidey - $6.99

July Purchases
Luke Skywalker (Dagobah) - $4.77
Yoda (Dagobah) - $4.77
Obi-Wan (Spirit) - $4.77
R2-D2 (Dagobah) - $4.77
Cloud Car Pilot - $4.77
Leia Bespin - $4.77
Lobot - $4.77
Han Solo (OTC repack) - $4.77
Han Solo (Vintage OTC) - $10.99
Princess Leia (Vintage OTC) - $10.99
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Vintage OTC) - $10.99
Minimates Pack (Spidey, Carnage, Thing, Dr. Doom) - $7.99
Minimates Pack (Spidey, Doc Ock, Cap America, Absorbing Man) - $7.99
Carnage (SMC) - $7.99

Total for the Year (Star Wars) - $300.35
Total for the Year (Everything) - $389.76

That doesn't include a Vader's TIE I got, since I used a gift card, and a few other birthday gifts.  Also a couple of Spidey comics along the way.  Like I said, more than I expected to spend so far this year...but not as bad as it could be (at least that is what I tell my wife ;))

yeah, but it was a cheap one, i saw it (you lucky bastard!) - besides, it's the middle of the month, and if that's all you've bought this month, then i'm probably ahead of you  :P

look at us, arguing over who's spending more money on this crap

Noooooooooooo, today was cheap, rest of month wasn't.  Though in theory it should get cheaper, lessen of course I keep going on that stoopid trilogo carded crap idea.

Hi Mrs. Mosnab, Brian's very sane.  Really ;D

Hey Dave, race ya to SSW.com so we can buy that Yoda print ;)

don't tempt me. i'm this close to buying some of the new jersey's that they have especially the "assassins" basketball one, and i really want that boba fett print as well. yoda and vader are nice as hell too, but if i could only get one, it would be the fett.

looks around room to see what he can sell on ebay to make enough money to buy fett print

I'm glad that my wife suggested I keep a "tally" of everything I spend on "toys and junk" this year, it has really been an eye opener.  Although I'm not on par with many other collectors, I have still spent much more than I would have thought.  For the year this far it has been:

Star Wars - Total: $379.58

Other Toy Lines - Total: $96.40

Year Total: $475.98

It has definitely been making me think I should just stick to Star Wars stuff from now on, or at least try to for the most part.

I decided to do this Brent's way, and break down my spending month by month.  I will say again, I am so glad that I'm keeping track of my purchases this year, it has been a definite eye opener.  September was my highest spending month ever, and has really made me realize I should probably try to taper back a little bit from now on.  I don't know if it is the combination of their being so much OT stuff this year, or if there has just been more stuff this year due to the DVD release, but I sure don't think that I used to spend this much each month when I started.  I believe when I first started regularly collecting SW, I spent about $30 a month, and sometimes not that.  For this year, I am hovering around the $80-ish mark.  Part of it might be due to picking up other lines along the way too, which doesn't help matters any.  My wife would like to see me limit my purchases to just Star Wars, which would make sense, but part of me wants to do main Star Wars, and one other small sub-collection.  I've wavered which way I want to go with that, but I really need to try to pick one...and one that won't be such a huge undertaking to keep up with.  Anyways, like I said, a definite eye opener, and I think my spending habits need to change.  It might be a drop in the bucket for some, but this is fairly spendy for us.  Here's my month by month breakdown:

January - $32.95
February - $88.93
March - $21.99
April - $58.52
May - $10.99
June - $81.82
July - $110.09
August - $71.23
September - $115.01

Total for the Year (Star Wars) - $474.16
Total for the Year (Other) - $123.55 (including one October purchase)

Total Total :) - 597.71

Yikes.  I don't know what I spent my money on before :P, or what I would now if I didn't collect.  That's a lot of extra dough.

I am ashamed to announce that I just updated my Excel sheet with the last 2 months purchases, and in September I past the $4000 threshold. That was my estimate for the year.

I'm hoping to come in under 5000 for the year total, which is entirely WAY too much money to spend on toys.   :(

I'm at $2,500-3,000 now, combining toys, comics, DVDs, books/magazines, CDs/vinyl albums, and storage.

Not bad. Figured I'd be around $4000 by now, but I didn't buy anything for a month and a half.

Kevin

We talked about that briefly in the thread, I believe it does change things & makes it unfair to other members & it would be another categorie for itself:

Thanks for playing honey, you treat me so well.  I think it certainly does give you the lead, unless we ask Adam to add up his stuff.

October was pretty slow for me.  I'll have to check the receipts though and get them in there.

No idea where I'm at for the year, though I'm sure it's definitely up there in the top 5 (and I don't even collect the props).

Since I haven't seen **** in the way of any new figures (POTC) in weeks, I decided to just drop $430 (including shipping) in the last couple days on:

4 Master Replicas mini sabers - $122
2 WOTC Clone Strike Booster cases and a Starter set - $188
4 Gentle Giant mini busts - $120

Ouch.  Patty's gonna be pissed!   :P

I'm not married anymore, so that takes care of that problem Hemish ;)

But, just like I tell everyone else, whenever your significant other complains about spending, just direct them here (and to the new thread that will start in about 2 1/2 weeks) and I'm sure they will be a little nicer after seeing what some of the crazy people here spend.

That said, with work and the holidays and everything being pretty crazy, I lost track of what I've spent recently (for real this time, Brent, and there's no way I'm going to remember everything), so I'll have to just start up a new one for next year :)

It's all good.  I'm a tad embarassed to say that my final total will end up being an underestimation as I forget to put in the occasional figure here and there, as well as some trading shipping costs, etc.

Hemish, it's been a little easier for me as I sold off a lot of my old toys from childhood.  I was born in 1964, so I had a lot of true vintage GI Joe stuff, original Hot Wheels and other more obscure toys that I've sold on ebay over the last year and a bit.  I've banked $1800 US (for a TV) and haven't been at zero in my paypal balance for about 15 months.  I spent an awful lot on vintage toys for sure, most of which is documented back on page two.  Modern stuff that was picked up locally came out of the bank account, but that's probably less than $1000 CAD I'd guess.  The rest has been paypal or on credit card from online retailers.

I expect my total next year to be substantially lower.  I haven't really bought much in the last couple of months, except for a few things online and VOTC, which has been pricey :o  20 VOTC stormtroopers is a wee bit pricey, but for us Canadians, the ROTJ wave showed up precisely at the right time, when TRU marked the price down from $14.97 CAD to $9.99 CAD or about $8.50 US.  I saved over $100 that otherwise would have been spent.

blah, blah, blah.  Sorry for rambling.

You have to be one of the Top 3 finishers in this year's contest to be able to start the next thread, so you're gonna have to wait for one of those guys to start 'er up.  Better luck in 2005!

I didn't know about this endeavour until about March, so I didn't participate - although I do have all my receipts from about Feb on for tax purposes - so I could do a partial tally.  Either way, I intend to get in on this starting next week.

I wish I had :-\  Worse, what I have is an underestimate - I know I've forgotten some items, some shipping costs for trades and some customs fees.  My goal for next year is to spend half what I spent this year.  Rotsa ruck ::)

I intentionally did not tally my purchases. Ignorance is bliss.

I do feel, though, that my total for 2004 is the lowest since the year before Ep I came out.

Alrighty then, here's how it went.

April..............................$547.47
May...............................$1016.88

December.....................$716.66

Total.............................$7490.41 :o
Estimated total.............$5000
Departure from estimate .$2490.41
All values are US dollars

Uh, yeah.  Ok then :-[

Well, I learned I spend a lot of money on toys, too much is quite reasonable to state.  The Canadian dollar factors into that as well, beginning the year in a rather depressed state, but I can make no excuses for the latter half of the year.  At least this year, aside from a vinyl cape Jawa, the vintage collection will add minimal dollars.

A positive caveat I can put on it is that I did pay for a lot of it (1/3?) by selling off my old, vintage toys on ebay, so it was a net zero, for part of that amount.  But holy crap, that's a lot of money.

Does 3 3/4" include all the deluxe, vehicles, beasts?

I think my plans are similar: 3 3/4" star wars, Marvel Legends, Kubricks.  But I differ a bit in that I want to get some Master Replicas ($600), Gentle Giant busts and bust ups ($300) and will inevitably pick up some McFarlane sportspicks, but hopefully I can keep that down under $100 itself.  I do need some vinty stuff, including a vinyl cape Jawa ($250) but that will basically complete that collection in total.  I also have some duplicate vintage stuff to sell that will make a dent in the total.

Oh yeah, what about Unleashed figures?  My guess is we'll see at least four sets of these this year, 12 figures, probably more with the movie.

Tomy mini-dioramas, but those are quite cheap. What else is out there? Hallmark ornaments, need to catch up with a few of those.  I could always start buying some helmets ::)  Oh and what ever happened to those mini-masks or whatever they were called?  Those looked cool :-[

shoot me.  shoot me now.

I didn't sign up for this game at the start of the year, but I have been keeping track nonetheless...

My 2004 Total:

$1596.98

Went over my planned budget of $100 a month, BUT almost ALL of the overage came at the hands of a certain line that I started collecting in 2004...

Yes, yet another "Damn Kubricks" story...  8)

Probably Beasts but not Vehicles, we'll see on those.  I have no room to display them and usually they sort of suck.  Deluxe is a case by case deal too.  I'm telling myself I won't buy Army Builders but I probably will

Having Simpsons and MOTU dead and LOTR almost dead has helped the Toy Budget.  Marvel isn't too expensive really when most of the stuff is spread over the year and there are what...20 figures?

Kubricks are the wild card in this...Damn them Crack Suckers.  I'm also dropping Unleashed and 12" too
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Brian on January 3, 2005, 01:54 PM
Yeah, the temptation of "other lines" is what makes my total worse than it needs to be too.  A "Gates of Mordor" Sam, and I think I can be done with LOTR, I just don't have the space for many more.  Marvel is another story, I really enjoy those figures, but we'll have to see.  I think I can at least go into this year knowing that Marvel Legends should be the only non-Star Wars line that tempts me from now on.  Of course, that is easy to say now.  I should just skip those too, since there are more than enough Star Wars lines alone out there to keep a person busy and spending money :).  Here's what I'm hoping to stick to this year:

Star Wars 3 3/4" - Figures, Beasts, Vehicles....likely the whole caboodle, but not completist.  Only the ones I like, and I'll likely skip the "Deluxe" ones if they are of the "force flippin fantabulous" variety.  Vehicles, I enjoy collecting them, but like Scott mentioned too, I'm really getting cramped for space.

Vintage Star Wars 3 3/4" - Still working (and hoping) to get a complete loose collection...someday.  This really got put on the backburner more than I had hoped with quite a bit of Star Wars/Misc. stuff out, and with moving and home improvement expenses.  I hope to get back to this in 2005, slowly but surely.

Star Wars Unleashed - This is a line I really like, and I hope to continue.  Space is a concern here as well.  I've been OT-only with this, but I'm starting to consider a few PT pieces here and there.

Galactic Heroes - Enjoy these little buggers too, and they have kind of become my alternative to Kubricks.  I'd really like to be in the Kubrick gang too, but I just don't think I can afford it.  I'm hoping the GH continue, and it looks like we'll get some ROTS ones at least...not a real expensive line to collect since there aren't too many of them and they are in 2-packs.

Star Wars Misc. - Hallmark Ornaments - a new area I might be jumping into...again, likely OT only, but I have some backtracking to do to catch up.  Jedi Force - I said I'd only get Chewie, but I now have Vader and the Droids sitting on the shelves too, so I guess I'm a liar.  Still not sure if I'll go any further, or if the line itself even will.  Bust-Ups - Again, only the Chewie so far, but they are pretty nifty, and my "cost effective" alternative to the very cool, but unaffordable for me, Mini Bust line.  I think I'd splurge if they released a Chewbacca Mini-Bust though.

Marvel Legends/Spidey - This is the main "other" line that continues to tempt me.  Nothing new around here for a looong time, so it hasn't been an issue, but if/when it starts to show up, it will be.  I know that I probably shouldn't buy any, but I can't say that I won't :).  I'll have to determine it by budget I guess, like I said, more than enough Star Wars goodies out there, particularly this year I'm guessing.
Title: Re: The Great 2004 collectors challenge
Post by: Morgbug on January 3, 2005, 02:42 PM
Hmmm.  Let's see....

Master Replica's - F/X sabers only ($600)

Unleashed - wavering due to space issues, but I think some of the PT looks superior to some OT stuff.  ($250)

Galactic Heroes - manageable and good for the kid ($100)

Kubrick's - >:( :-\ :-[ - regular stuff from upcoming series plus I wouldn't mind filling in a few of the chase pieces, maybe a loose Boba or two, then droids versions ($400)

Star Wars 3 3/4" - figures (probably armies :-X), maybe beasts and some ships, will have to see - strategy is very different this year though, army builders and 'cool' figures ok to purchase at retail, otherwise wait for secondary market price drop on loose stuff.  I completely see the point regarding ships, but the new yellow preview ship (modified star fighter) looks kind of nifty to me. ($1500)

Vintage - some minor variations, vinyl Jawa then I'll probably get stupid and go for a 12 back collection ::) - also need my loose Droids 3PO ($500 minus the 12 backs ;))

Hallmark - just some OT stuff, mostly ships, buy 'em in June (100)

Bust ups - manageable dollarwise ($200)

GG busts - shouldn't be too many considering I'm pretty selective, hoping for a new Vader bust, maybe a new Boba ($300)

Marvel Legends - pretty sure going the case route here, like Scott, especially for the "builder" series'. ($320)

Spiderman Legends - just villains and all I need is patience ($100)

LOTR - just need to finish out my major guys, needing Hobbits and a Legolas - canned the idea of having all the Wraiths, so just need one of each type, still bringing me to around five or so.  ($50)

McFarlane - probably just a couple of hockey guys - Jets Khabibulin and a Legend or two, otherwise I'm done.  Will still help out folks here best I can. ($100)

Anything I'm missing?  If not, great, that's already got me at $4520 :o :'(  Where to cull ??? :-\

Just for reference's sake, since Dale's too lazy to convert for us, his total is approximately $9,858 in U.S. dollars, using today's exchange rate (which is obviously not entirely indicative of his past year's activities, but oh well).

Definitely have to hear from Adam before deciding anything here, 'cause with all those freakin' props (including LOTR) that he buys, plus the MR AT-AT, etc., he'll likely be at, or very near the top, of the Challenge as well.  I'd guess Josh might be up close to the $5K area too...

As for me, I chose from the very start not to get involved with this, since I didn't really want to know my total.  But I'm a carded/loose completist of EVERYTHING 4" (figures, ships, beasts, playsets, ****** exclusives, etc.), an avid army builder, then add in Kubricks, Unleashed, Gentle Giant busts, Galactic Heroes, WOTC minis, GG Bust-Ups, Master Replicas mini-sabers, Legos, posters, Hallmark ornaments, books, DVDs, etc.

I'm pretty confident in guessing that I'd probably fall somewhere around jokabofe's dollar amount, unfortunately.  Hopefully not as high as Brent's though.  Either way, ugh.   :-\

$9,858 US would be around the area but the way the dollar up here was from the begining of the year till the year end, I may have burst the $10,000. US mark.  :-\

If that was the prize, I'd make sure I won every year. And I could certainly do it. Oh yes, I could  :D

All things considered, while yes I spent at least that much money, I made probably 1/2 - 3/4 of that selling stuff. So "new" money spent wasn't nearly as high.
