Title: Walmart Black Series 3.75" Wave 9 (TLJ Wave 1)
Post by: Jeff on August 10, 2017, 11:56 AM
Once again from Yakface (http://yakfaceforums.com/main/2017/08/10/3-75-black-series-the-last-jedi-figures/), who have been hitting it out of the park lately, news on a rumored line-up for the first batch of TLJ BS 3.75" figures -

Rey (Jedi Training)
Luke Skywalker (Jedi Master)
First Order Executioner
Elite Praetorian Guard

Looks like they will be one wave available close to Force Friday II (Sept 1st) and not split up into two waves (like the Rogue One figures were).

Will be interesting to see who actually has them available - Walmart plus on-line/specialty shops or will TRU and Target carry them too?  Also, how will they sell?  Will folks buy them now or wait, hoping for them to show up on TVC cads next year?

I'll buy now personally but I wouldn't mind buying again of course.  The two army builders are nice that they're new and not rehashes.  I'll not want quite as many as I usually do but I'm still down for a couple of each.  Rey and Luke I'm just excited to have right away.  Wish there was a Poe in the kick ass jacket ala Han's favorite clothing store.

That Praeorian Guard is gonna be interesting.  There are a few different helmet designs we've seen so far in images.  Hopefully the heads on the SA will swap with the 5POA versions to help diversify the SA options...

So who is the praetor of the First Order? No one seems to know.

If these are out for Force Friday, will make an interesting dilemma as far which figures I buy. Nah, I'll buy them all.

I figure worse comes to worse and I'll either have to hollow a head out or fill it in some and do a swap.  The one helmet looks strikingly like the EU extra bucket the TVC royal hmguard came with.

I would MUCH rather grab these than anything 6 inch. I've been debating selling off my 6 inch figures for a few weeks now.

My concern for these is I'll be on vacation during FF, and these will be hard to obtain.

So what's this about TBS 3.75" no longer being exclusive to Walmart? Does that mean other brick and mortars such as Target are expected to receive them? Or does it just mean etailers like EE and BBTS will be able to order them from Hasbro?

So what's this about TBS 3.75" no longer being exclusive to Walmart?

Nothing official yet, but Previews/Diamond solicited the two Rogue One figure cases recently, so at least they are going to be made available via comic shops.

There are hints that online shops will be able to carry them, but nothing on whether places like Target or TRU will be carrying them...

Thanks Jeff. Disappointing to hear that we're not likely to see any other brick and mortars get the TBS TLJ figures. My concern for my part of Chicagoland that with the TFA Han wave still filling up pegs, the Rogue One waves barely showing up, and the Proto Fett wave never appearing there is such a bottleneck at the distribution centers we won't see the TLJ figures next month. From what I've seen around the net, it appears this could be the case around much of the US, such a shame...

Saw these pop up as part of a rumored SA 3.75 inch Walmart Multipack. Can't seem to find any other info on them anywhere though.

Not sure it's a multi-pack.  I know where you're coming from that though Diddly, on the wording in the article, but it's sounding more like just an "assortment" how I read it.

I doubt these are part of Force Friday.  Why would anyone bother to buy the 5 POA figures?

I'm pretty sure this is the 3.75" First Order Stormtrooper Executioner (all of the backgrounds for the 3.75" Black Series are black)

Glad to see that these are coming out.  I wonder why they went with Rose in this assortment instead of Rey?

Also based on reading the article, I think it's the same kind of offering as before:  $12.99 per figure, packaged individually.  I think the writer probably should have made that a bit more clear.

Rose instead of a SA Jedi Rey is just confusing. I'm sure we're getting one but - what?

So will the scalpers buy up all these red guards, too?

Predict rows of Rose until at least summer 2018.

There's 4 different Praetorian Guards, so maybe Scalpers will be easy on them

Luke though, hopefully he's overproduced

Yeah after I posted this I saw the part about them all being 12.99 each. The original forum I got these from didn't have the Stormie pic, hence the Multipack thing. I figured a mod will edit any errors. :P

I found 3 full cases of this wave today and they wouldn't ring up nor would they do an override for me at customer service even after I brought them the shelf tag and an older figure to scan.  :(

I found all four today at a Walmart in Wisconsin.  I bought one of each, and two of the Praetorian Guards.

I also had to talk the self-checkout attendant into manually ringing them up since they wouldn't sell.  Luckily she did, getting to Walmart is a huge pain the ass for me.

They were priced $11.92 on the shelf.

I saw something to the effect that there might be a November 1 street date on the TLJ 3.75" Black Series wave.  And that might account for the denials at the register.

Yeah, the boxes are labelled with Nov 1st date (see below).  I can't believe Walmart/Hasbro is expecting stores to get these cases in now and then just sit on them in the back until November 1.  No wonder employees are just putting them out and not giving two Fs.   :-X

Agreed. Here's hoping that WalMart is ONLY slated to get this wave and any other SA TLJ figures will be part of the return of the Vintage Collection. This way, all of the people who are using older TBS 3.75" figures to get these four scanned at the register won't be impacting the arrival of a WM exclusive TLJ Wave 2.

Got this wave just now! I only saw them because another guy had them and was scanning them at the price checker. I asked if there were any more and he gave me his extras saying he didn't want to horde, so I got very lucky there. Took them to the self checkout and played dumb with the clerk when they didn't scan. I remained firm in that I wanted to buy them and eventually the clerk had to type in the individual UPC code.

I think I'm more relieved to just be done with this awful line (outside of the Shoretrooper)

A buddy got this wave and the case breakdown he found is very disturbing...

Rose x3
Guards x2
Stormtrooper x2
Luke x1!!!!

Seriously a messed up breakdown, Rose will be collecting dust until Episode 9 and one of the most desired figures in recent history is relegated to 1 per case. What a mess!

Your buddy should consider himself lucky! I have stumbled across this case in two WalMarts and between the two, only been able to score one Praetorian Guard - if I had been able to find a 2nd, I would be "done" with this WalMart TBS 3.75" nonsense.

For those that have found these, do your stores have a lot of older stock? I thought about venturing out for a look with all the reports here, but our local stores have a metric ton of the older figures, so I'm not sure there would even be room for them to hit the floor. Really hope I'm able to get a hold of a set.

In the two stores where I have found them - a modest amount of stock. In one store that would have expected to find them - they are clogged with the Leia/Han/Phasma wave and Finn - four pegs worth - they aren't getting those in or displaying them anytime soon is my guess...

Store 1 (where I bought mine): Pegs clogged with Hans and Finns and Leias. Not sure where the guy who gave me extras found them

Yeah, they just seem to be throwing them out there regardless of what older stuff is on the pegs. I've also seen a few extras on the tops of the shelves too.

I was able to pick up a full set of 4 of these today, no issues ringing up so they must have fixed the computer glitch or whatever.

Over the weekend, I have a long drive home from the boy's football games, so I decided to hit some Wally's along the way...  One on the western side of Pittsburgh had 3 Roses, nothing else.  This smacked of someone gobbling stuff up to resell to me, but maybe I'm jaded.  Either way, I grabbed 2 Roses thinking I'd help a local out if he needed it and one for myself.  No issue checking out, though I did nab a Rey and put her on top of the pile so she got scanned first in a hope that it was late and the checkout lady wouldn't give a poo and just push them through however she had to.

OK so my night was alright...  I'd hit a store nearer the school and it hadn't had anything but this one near the city did, hooray.

On the way home I hit one near my gf's place and rounded the corner...  They had Cassian Andor and the Scarrif Trooper.  One each, but for the first time I've heard out here in the East, they had figures from this wave!

Now, is this a thing that we'll see more of?  I dunno.  But I was a happy man even to find one.  Someone had gotten the rest and left a Death Trooper too, which I also bought, but yeah.  Cool beans, this made my night.

But I decided to press my luck and drag my gf with me to the store beyond her town...  not far, and I was pushing for no whammy's.  I round the corner and I see old Luke, Rose, and after some digging a Praetorean Guard.

Again, many more Roses than the others.  No Executioners, and 1x each in damaged boxes Luke/Guard which once again smacked of someone perhaps there to resell stuff.

I hate crying scalper but I have noticed an uptick in the telltale signs of douchebags creeping into the hobby more.  Especially with the 3.75" TBS line, and things like the Probot, basic old Luke, etc.

So I had a pretty solid night as toy runs go, and then my buddy Jim nabs me the Executioner and our other buddy the rest of the wave...  I have an extra Rose now, and I'm ok with that.

Some thoughts on the figures...

-Praetorian Guard...  He's probably my favorite due to the army buildability of him, and he's a solid figure overall.  Sculpt, articulation, range of motion of said articulation, paint aps (such as they are), and so on and so forth.  He's pretty simple in a way, but he's a good figure all around.

-Executioner...  Don't have him in hand yet, but he's basically a new deco and a new weapon on an old figure.  It's a figure I like, and it's not as army buildable as the original trooper is (I'm assuming they don't have 100 executioners running around in TLJ), but I'm guessing he's just an old figure with a new deco.  Ok, nothing amazing to go nuts over.

-Rose...  Shockingly love her.  She's very poseable, very easily holds her weapon with 2 hands, one hand, lots of cool poses...  I like the aurabesh text on her jumpsuit.  She has customizability with the genericness of the costume.  She's a pretty cool figure and just very well done.  Is she important?  Does she do a ton?  Does she deserve this many figures immediately?  No clue, but the figure, as it is, is great.  Kind of a shame she's the Finn/Old Leia/Jyn/Lando of this particular wave...  She deserves better.  Her initial basic 5POA 3.75" figure should've been a different costume ala her 6" exclusive or something.

-Luke...  Here's the one that I'm torn on.  I didn't look for a 5POA Luke because I didn't see the necessity in it with a 3.75" SA figure.  Like Rose, I knew what I wanted, and it was articulation...  and I got it!  However, Hasbro (in its infinite confusing mixed message stuff they do) decided they'd super articulate his lower body while putting stiff plastic robes over it.   ::)

The sculpt is great.  The deco is great.  Having Old Luke there to stand and stare angrily, I love that...  BUT WTF!?  No way this figure should've had plastic robes.  Cloth cloth cloth!  That's the point of this line!  The ability to pose these figures, and I'd like to think Luke could still whip some ass if he wished.

So I actually love-hate this figure...  I'd add too, that his cloth cape needs some tweaking to make it lay right and look correct on this figure, but they've done the "skirt" piece in cloth so well before, especially with Jedi, and this one they just really **** the bed with the plastic robes.  You can literally get a 5POA Luke with plastic robes that you can't pose dynamically, for less money, then you can pay more and get a Luke you can pose dynamically so long as he's standing there kind of plainly.  But either way, whatever, it's a cool figure to (finally) have.  I like it.  I just am left scratching my head.

Scarrif Troopers...  I had one already I got online for a fair price factoring in the shipping, and knew I loved it.  It's a figure that is up there with my all time favorites, right beside the Death Trooper actually.  And Cassian...  And Jyn...  Can you guess I enjoyed Rogue One?

You stay up late, dude!  ;D

It's my understanding that there actually are squads of Executioners, maybe not hundreds, but definitely more than one. So that one is probably ok to army build.

It seems the Praetorian Guards though, unlike the ERG's, are actually individualized, both in armor and weapons, so that one might be more of a stretch to buy multiples. But don't let that stop you! You can always customize...

Jesse, I too have been thinking about scalpers. The original guy who let me have his extras only had Luke, Stormie and EPG in his hands, I found the Roses later. And the fact that Rose is the only other figure I've seen on the pegs at multiple stores is fishy too. The first new toys to hit WM in a while and a non-repack is sitting? ::)

Sometimes I think the scalper thing is overblown, especially by some other sites pushing for a headline, but to me the 90s were a time of woe for that crap.  These days, a single guy can clean out a store for sure.  That said, when Rose is the only one left, and I can't speak for all collectors but when a wave hits I get the figures from said wave and not skip one as some kinda gamble, yeah I dunno.  That's not quite right in my mind.

Then finding the guard and Luke, but only 1 each of those and with quite noticeably damaged boxes...  everything else gone, but Rose?  Hmmm yeah. Smacking of lameness.

I think there is some uptick.  I think the limited nature of exclusives is driving it...  Walmart stuff has certainly been hit and miss, and so IF I see it, I see it there.  Never see the same stuff as much at Target or TRU.

Noticed it on FF2 though, that guys were clearly looking for the exclusive 6" stuff and buying specific 5POA figures that were rumored "rare" like Luke or whatever.  Rey wasn't too easy to find either, but I noticed at the start like the Chewbacca variant porg was driving some goofy questions too like "which is more rare" and stuff.  ::)  Probots were going too and just happened to be the lesser packed one?  Shocking.  ::)  Meanwhile Rathtars galore haha.

Oh yeah, I do stay up too late sometimes haha.  I had an emergency repair for someone's car last night so I was out in the garage till after 1 here.  Then I had some news to post (Q&A with Hasbro that we piggybacked with www.ImperialHolocron.com needed posted).  Nothing ever goes smooth on a car repair in the northeast, haha.

Hit a local Walmart today and found a bunch of Roses and a Praetorian Guard.  Love the Guard, like the Rose, and I'm hoping to find a couple of Lukes and Executioners soon!

Scalpers (around here in Iowa) are definitely more of a factor than they have been in forever, but I agree, a lot of this feels overblown. When you pimp every day the 'outrageous' prices on eBay for X Y or Z, you start to see that it's not about some crazy auction but someone's traffic. If there were as many scalpers as there in the 90's, we wouldn't be talking about distribution. Ever.

I hit the mother lode today!  I was at one of the Walmarts near me and was able to pick up 2 Lukes, 2 Executioners, and a second Praetorian Guard.

The Executioners are easily the gems of this wave!  Love the ball and socket wrists!  I hope they are in the movie for more than 10 seconds!

The Luke is good, not great.  I agree with Jesse that I would prefer more soft goods on him.  I would also have liked him to come with his lightsaber....at least the hilt for his belt.  Also, one of mine has the feet reversed.  Anyone know how to swap these feet easily?  Remember, I don't really do any customization.

Run his feet under hot tap water a good while n it'll soften his shins enough to remove the feet and swap them.  Usually I boil figures but since ur not into the customizing thing Matt just hold it under the hottest tap water so you soften the leg plastic enough.  The feet pegs are a hard plastic and won't soften.  The foot itself will tho cuz it's like the shin plastic.

Not really sure what you mean there but basically here is a popped apart foot of a figure, just so you see what you're dealing with (stolen via google).

The "pin" that the foot pivots on and which plugs into the shin/lower leg is rigid plastic and won't soften with the hot water.  The foot itself is molded around the pin.  That's actually where cost is with ball socket joints with Hasbro figures.  The molding process is more $ because of that but it can't fall apart.

It's not hard to pop figures apart though just make sure you leave it under the tap a while.  You'll just have to pop the feed off and then heat the shin up again (not even as much) and pop the foot's pin back in and voila. :)

Again, stuck in WM nightmare land here in LA. Every WM within driving distance is just a disaster concerning anything black series, all clogged with older product. Found one Rose while on a job out of town, but that's it so far.

I was covering a high school football game in the middle of nowhere last night and stopped by their local WM on the way home. Ended up grabbing a Luke if anyone needs one. They had a TON of Roses but I passed on them all assuming it would be easiest for people to find.

There was a Executioner Stormie there but it had been swapped out with a 5POA First Order Stormie  ::)

Amazing how well a figure can stand if his feet are in the correct legs!

I was curious haha.  Hate those factory f ups.  I've gotten backward crotches too.  Swapping the legs can be a little trickier because of the shape of the thigh joint post.

I bet a lot of people have figs with backward crotch pieces under skirts that cover it and they never notice.  I've seen it popping custom fodder here and there.

If that's the last wave then, I'm surprised there hasn't been any refresh shipments. At least in my area it seems to be a case of each store got their one case and then that's it. Now the only thing still hanging around is the Rose figure.

I would echo the same thing here around Minneapolis. I monitor the local inventories of 12-15 walmart stores and it seems most stores only received one TLJ case, if any.

I picked up Ponda Baba, the Tusken Raider and the Sandtrooper a few days ago.  Even though they scanned at full price ($11.97 each) in the store I was able to get the cashier to price match them all to the sale prices on Walmart.com.  And doing that I wound up getting two of them for $4.97 each and one for $6.97.  All you have to do is have your smartphone handy with the links to their listings on Walmart.com.

Seen very little of interest in this line for a while.  I really hope I get a few more cracks at Praetorian Guards (especially now having seen the movie), and an extra Luke for customizing.

Even Rose from that wave is gone here now, not that much of that wave ever hit here.

The others including the fabled repacks of greatness are pegwarming, Proto Boba aside.

No Rogue One figure sightings in quite some time but the odd Jyn here and there.  :-\

Wanted to share my East coast exploits over winter break.

I landed in Charlotte, NC and had to drive to Marion to pick up my kids. Had lots of time to kill, so hit every WM along the way, I think 7 in total along the 85, 321 and 40. NC was the only state I had any luck with this wave. I was just looking for the Praetorian Guard. I found one in Hickory. Also managed to snag a pair of Lukes and a Execution trooper for friends and there was at least one Rose at nearly every WM I stopped at.

After picking up my girls and spending some time in Marion, we began our drive to PA. After Hickory, we stopped at WM's along the way for potty breaks and hopped onto the 77 North at Statesville. Stopped in Harrisonburg, VA for a few hours of sleep and then continued on to PA via the 81, again hitting WM's along the way for breaks (my GF has a small bladder, Lol!) Spent my time in PA, drove my kids to Baltimore to catch a flight home and then drove to Philly to head back to LA. Must have hit 20 WM's since leaving Statesville, NC and was lucky to see one Rose at some of the stores. That was it.

Are these still hitting anywhere at this point? They never really showed up at our local store, although a friend was able to snag 3 of the 4 for me at a store across town. Since then (October I think), I haven't seen any. Still want to get at least one Praetorian Guard (and hopefully some extras down the road), but wasn't sure if I wanted to bite the eBay bullet quite yet. It would seem to be good fodder for a Vintage Collection re-release, but who knows how that is going to go.
