Title: TRU Clone Wars ARC-170 (Wampa's Head)
Post by: Jeff on July 24, 2008, 11:33 AM
Pics at RS (http://www.rebelscum.com/sdcc08/Hasbro/vehicles/image6.asp)

I'll pass (I don't have room for the ARC-170 I have let alone more of them), but I like the little Wampa Head on there.  :)

Boy, that does look pretty nifty.  I really like the ARC-170 ship too, and have the earlier ROTS one, but like Jeff, I just don't think I have the room for this.  Especially with the Falcon, and now things like the Sarlacc, Homestead, etc. coming in the battle packs line.  Its going to be tough to find room for all of this stuff - let alone afford it.  Nice ship though, wish I could grab one.

This ship's deco is too clean, like the new Gunship. I would have like to see some battle wear on both, it would make them both more appealing. I may have bought in and got rid of one of my other ones. I have yet to open the Target Space Whale version and I also have two ROTS ones (one is also in the box)

Outside of the Wampa sticker there is nothing to it, nice for those who missed the original ROTS. At least the Twi'lek chic on the gunship looks like a cool graphic. Do you guys remember when great vehicles like this were not reissued for awhile to space out the line, looks like those days are gone

No room & no desire for this one - PASS.

I actually like this a lot, and since I don't have an ARC yet (passed on the Target ones at 7.50 - yup, I did) I may get it.  Space is a huge issue for me though.

Another easy pass.  I own 3 of these already and the Wampa paint just isn't enough for me.  This is the fist time in seven years where I'm finally not compelled to buy everything Star Wars...  There's simply way too much stuff this year - especially with the Joes and Transformers.  I'm going to have to bow out of one of these three lines pretty quick here.

Looking at the price tag though - how in the hell is this thing only $34.99 at TRU, but  the "new" Gunship is $49.99 at WM?  Same amount of plastic, yet a $15 increase in price?  Meh...

The thing that bothers me is the #1 thing that bugs the absolute hell out of me about EU

Hoth is a backwater planet with no civilizations and should not be well known throughout the galaxy, let alone one of the few wildlife creatures that exist. Hell, the Alliance doesn't even know that Wampas are on Hoth.  And yet...here is a wampa showing up on a starship.  LamEU ::)

I seem to remember there being a Wampa on a planet (Gall?) on the Shadows of the Empire game.  I think it had a more tan wool color... I do recall that sucker taking about a hundred blasts before it finally dies.

Yup!  If you played Shadows of the Empire on the Nintendo 64, you might recall some brown Cliff Wampas on the planet of Gall.  Of course, with a name like Cliff Wampa, I'd expect it to be telling me obscure trivia at some bar.

Asajj Ventress also fought a Wampa in the original Clone Wars series in that arena on Rattatak.  They get around.

Check out the front page for a Boxed image of the ARC-170 "Wampa Fighter" (http://www.jedidefender.com/image.pl?http://www.jedidefender.com/news/images/1-08/08CW_Arc170_Full.jpg).

Part of me is with Scott on the EU thing of moving some animals off-planet just for the sake of a tie-in to the films.  It happens way too much...  My personal take on the EU issue is that it's similar to humans inhabiting various planets and things, in that the Wampas are not related, just similar genetically...  It's like the Star Trek thing where very human-like beings live on other planets and evolved elsewhere.  Or like Romulans and Vulcans are "cousins" in a way.  Wampas are kind of a generic term for this type of creature.  It's a BS way of making it fit...  I can accept it then, but I still am with Scott that EU writers aren't clever enough to come up with new creatures it seems, and so they try to play off the familiar from the films way too much.

I completely agree with you guys about the wampa's, but it's not always about the writers being clever enough, it's about the writer's working off of mandates from the marketing department execs.

Addendum:

Out side of the Wampa, is this the same paint scheme/color as the ROTS one? Anyone know?

From the image of the box, I would be incined to say yes but you never know what you'll get...

They appear to be similar, but I think the new one is a brighter shade of red, while the RotS version is a duller maroon color.  There are also difference in the cannon/missile colors and the stickers too...

ROTS version:

Also the main body is white/cream color on the ROTS version and the CW version is more grey.

Also of note, the CW one has the Republic Symbol, instead of Obi-wan's command symbol on the wings.

It's a definite repaint, just fairly similar.

Other than the Wampa face, I like the new one better. I wonder if it's already applied as part of the paint scheme, or it's just a sticker that you can choose to put on or not?

Ugh, that's an ugly price. I'll still pick up my two, I just might space out the purchases more than I intended. Mr. Pawlus, do you know if the Wampa head is a sticker or if it is painted on like the Republic Gunship artwork?

I've read reports that it is in fact a sticker.

It's your lucky day-- it is indeed a sticker.  I'm actually a little disappointed, I was hoping for a tampo.   Not that it makes a big deal in terms of cost, but at least it'd match the Gunship in the sense that I didn't have to put labels on it.

Awesome, loving the sticker. I'd rather not apply them in this case.

Wow - for $45 we get a Wampa Head Sticker?!?

At least with the "Lucky Lekku" Gunship that is printed/stamped on the mold and has a cool weathered look that you'd never get with a sticker.

Definitely going to space out buying this guy - perhaps make sure I get my MIB one now and then wait for sales/discounts/whatever closer to the holidays to pick up a second one - you know this puppy will be around for a while.

Does TRU have any other exclusives or vehicles coming out soon? If not then yeah, this thing will be around for a while. Heck, just the other day I saw more White TIEs and the STAP attack and Hoth Patrol battle packs. Not exactly running through those too quickly. Not to mention the fact that I can still easily pick up the Holo Grievous figure too.

I don't believe I've ever seen TRU clearance any Star Wars stuff ever. :-\

Actually, when TRU has a "sale" it's usually something like spend $X and get ABC for free. Like a buy-two-get-one-free kind of deal.

But that's kinda mute now - I just got TRU's "Biggest Toy Book Ever" and on the back of mine there were three coupons:

$10 off a purchase of $100 or more valid 10/26 - 11/30
$10 off a purchase of $100 or more valid 12/1 - 12/31
Free $10 Gift Card with a purchase of $75 or more valid 10/26 - 11/30

Since I also still need to pick up some Wave 1 Saga Legends to finish off that sub-line, I can always pick up one or two of them each time I make a purchase just to push me over the threshold to qualify, so for example...

Purchase #1:  Score two of the "Wampa" ARC-170 ($90) and throw in two Saga Legends figures ($16) as soon as I see the ARC exclusive - get $10 off that purchase. Since I need to get the figures anyway, as I see it that brings the ARCs down to $40 each instead of $45.

Purchase #2: Score one each of the V-Wing and Hailfire Droid exclusives (guessing $60 there), so throw in another two Saga Legends figures ($16) and use the other coupon that expires at the end of November to get a free $10 gift card. (Here I'm hoping that the stores will get those exclusives before the end of the November)

Purchase #3: Once December 1st rolls around, score my opener Hailfire Droid and V-Wing Repaints which again assuming the price is $30 each and I'm sure by that time I'll easily be able to score some new Comic 2-packs or the two battle packs that are just hitting now or anything else that may have hit like TLC Wave 4 or TCW Wave 3, etc... to bring that purchase up to anything over $110, so I can use the $10 gift card AND the $10 off coupon.

So it's not really a "sale" but it's $30 worth of savings that I can get if I spread the purchases around. That's all I meant.
