Has anyone used a resin piece for a custom? If so how well did the paint process go? Would you use resin again?

Resin has to be cleaned really well before painting, and should definitely be primed first with automotive primer. Otherwise it's no different than plastic.
Really plastic should be washed and dried thoroughly too, but resins usually have mold release agents on them that definitely need cleaned off. But anything to be painted should be prepped first with a good cleaning since it'll have oils/residues off your hands that inhibit paint adhesion.

Can I use rubbing alcohol to clean it? And will acrylic paint hold?

soap and water cleans resin parts from their release agents, no need to do rubbing alcohol. Just warm water and dish soap and thorough cleaning (using a brush, preferably something soft like a toothbrush).
As far as paint, all paints pretty much adhere to resin well once primed. Even without priming really.
