Rogue One / Rogue One Rebel U-Wing Fighter
« on: August 15, 2016, 07:44 PM »
Check out this posting at From 4-LOM to Zuckuss.  They've got our first glimpse of what look like official Hasbro images of the 3.75" U-Wing Starfighter.  This vehicle also includes a 3.75" Captain Cassian Andor figure ..... and Nerf action features.

These images appear to have leaked from a French product listing that was posted a little early.  The vehicle definitely looks scaled down.  And the original article stated that they think the price point will be around $50.

The Original Trilogy / 'Revenge Of The Jedi' trailer
« on: May 29, 2016, 11:04 AM »
Check out this posting from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences:

With Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) taking the world by force, 1982 was a year defined by anticipation for the third and (then) final chapter in the Star Wars saga. The film’s originally promoted title Revenge of the Jedi and its ultimate change to Return of the Jedi has always been of significance to fans. Advertising materials that bear the more aggressive Revenge title reveal how far along the film’s marketing cycle had come prior to George Lucas’ decision to dismiss it in favor of Return. From posters and trailers to merchandising tie-ins, Revenge artifacts represent a compelling period in Star Wars history.

The Academy Film Archive holds several trailers from the United States with the initial Revenge title, most of which announcing a May 25th 1983 release date which coincided with the anniversary of the original Star Wars stateside release in 1977. However, this peculiar and very brief Revenge of the Jedi teaser trailer originated from a cinema in the United Kingdom, where the film was originally being considered for a Christmas 1983 release. This rare teaser, preserved by the Academy Film Archive, was apparently shown with the U.K.’s May 1982 double feature re-release of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. American audiences would not get a glimpse of the third film until Star Wars was re-released in the U.S. in August 1982, meaning that this may be the earliest Revenge trailer distributed – and fans from across the pond got the first peek!

Not so much a rumor since there are pics, but this morning I saw the post for an astromech 3-pack at Yakface.  Considering the lineup of droids?  I think this set might be linked to ROGUE ONE since at least one of them looks like it was in the hangar on Yavin IV in the first trailer.  Based on the packaging the droid lineup includes:

-R2-A3
-R5-K6
-R2-F2

Rogue One / Rogue One Toy Rumors
« on: April 25, 2016, 12:01 PM »
Saw this via the Yakface twitter feed.  I translated the text (thanks, Google!).  The YF post mentioned an AT-AT, but there's nothing in this Swiss retail product list that gets anywhere near that descriptive.  Other mentions of this "Signature Set" seem very much focused on this € 454.91 priced  offering being an AT-AT.  I've seen similar inclinations over at the RS forums.  Given the story of ROGUE ONE and the price, I'm leaning more towards a Death Star set.

This ROGUE ONE product list was originally posted by Star Wars Collector.de.  Here's the translated text.  The prices that are listed in both Swiss Francs and Euros.

Some item titles you can already guess pretty well to what products could be doing. In some other again, it is the more difficult. Plenty of room for the usual speculation indicated.

Once we learn more about the new Hasbro Rogue One Collectibles, we will tell you about course.

Veteran Star Wars actor Peter Mayhew, the man behind Chewbacca, has tweeted some pages from the original script for Star Wars.  Those pages depict a very different version of Obi-Wan Kenobi's confrontation with Darth Vader on the Death Star.  It's very difficult to imagine Obi-Wan escaping from his duel with Vader, and escaping aboard the Millennium Falcon.  His survival would have reshaped much of the saga without him becoming one with The Force, and he likely would have served in the capacity of Luke's Jedi Master in TESB had the script not been changed to what we saw in ANH.

Check out THIS ARTICLE by former Lucasfilm staffer Bonnie Burton.  It's about a group of fans called Team Negative One who acquired a 35mm print of the original theatrical release of STAR WARS (not A New Hope) and restored it to it's original glory.

Fans restore original 'Star Wars' for online release

A group of die-hards spent years cleaning a 35mm film print and published it online without George Lucas' later alterations -- or any permission.

If you saw the original 1977 "Star Wars" in theaters or grew up watching it on videotape or laserdisc, you may know every moment by heart.

When filmmaker George Lucas began revising scenes in 1997 in what became known as "Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope," some die-hard fans vowed to learn lightsaber skills to one day exact revenge.

Luckily, you don't need to go to the dark side to get back those precious original moments. A group of ambitious fans who call themselves Team Negative One decided to restore and release the original version online.

Fans can already legally buy Episodes IV, V and VI on DVD and Blu-ray, but those are actually the special editions that Lucas altered. If you don't mind scratches and poor sound quality, the unrestored versions of the films from laserdisc were made available as bonus material on a 2006 DVD release.

But in this new version made by fans calling themselves Team Negative One, each frame has been painstakingly restored from a 35mm theatrical print of "Star Wars." The high-def print was released on a movie message board in January, under the name "Silver Screen Theatrical Version," according to Movie Mezzanine blog.

This restored version shows scenes that die-hard fans care about deeply, like Han Solo shooting Greedo first. But what also is most impressive are Team Negative One's videos showing how they managed to transform the 35mm print into a version comparable to, and in some cases, better than the official Blu-ray release.

Unlike the fan-made "Star Wars Despecialized" edition which is made using multiple sources including the laserdisc, Blu-ray, 16mm print transfer and various audio dubs, this "Silver Screen Theatrical Version" from Team One Negative is from the 35mm theatrical print of "Star Wars."

"Why did it take over three years to complete?" YouTube user The Star Wars Trilogy wrote in its video description. "This is why. Manual cleanup alone took an average of one minute per frame. Star Wars has around 174,000 frames."

Clearly, this fan release of the film is not legal and will most likely be shut down by Disney and Lucasfilm lawyers soon. But it does make the point that if fans are willing to put in the time and effort to restore the version of "Star Wars" they want in their collections, why should it not be sold officially? Your move, Disney.

Check out the following links for a look at how some of the footage has been restored:

The Prequel Trilogy / Anakin Skywalker - The Role
« on: January 21, 2016, 09:34 AM »
There seems to be a lot of turmoil around the actors who portrayed Anakin Skywalker in the PT.  Jake Lloyd has led something of a tortured existance, having played the young version of Anakin in The Phantom Menace.  And last year things came to a head when Jake ran afoul of law enforcement in South Carolina.  I sincerely hope that he's able to turn things around for himself.

Jake has had a tough time of things.  Especially since so many adult fans took to blaming him and his performance for not living up to their expectations for the Prequels.  It's that reaction to him that has really gotten me angry with fans who have been more than a bit overzealous.

Then there was Hayden Christensen in Episodes II and III.  He was a relative unknown, and had to step into a role that would be intensely scrutinized.  When it came to the physical aspects of the role he seemed up to the task.  But he was also in the unenviable position of having to play a character who was struggling with great power, trying to keep a romantic relationship under wraps, and speak in a way that was in line with the established pattern of dialogue of Darth Vader.

So how did Hayden deal with it?  He's performed in a handful of other movies, including the well regarded Shattered Glass.  But by and large Christensen seems to have distanced himself from Hollywood.  Check out this article about his semi-retirement from acting.  And once again, given the strong feelings of some overzealous Star Wars fans, I can't say that I blame him.

And then, there's what might have been.  Like?  Leonardo DiCaprio passing on the role of Anakin Skywalker.  In no way do I want to disparage the work of Hayden Christensen as Anakin.  I think that a lot of the trouble with that character was a product of the screenwriting of George Lucas.  But given how strong Leo's performances have been over the past decade plus?  It really makes me wonder what ATTACK OF THE CLONES and REVENGE OF THE SITH might have been like with Leo playing opposite Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid.

So, it begs the question:  was the role of Anakin Skywalker, to some degree, cursed?

The Force Awakens / Where is Rey?
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:38 AM »
There's been an ongoing discussion in social media and now the broader media about the relative lack of Rey merchandise at retail over the past month or so.  It came to a significant head when the discussion turned to the Star Wars Monopoly game, which didn't feature Rey as a playing piece in the game.  These licensed merchandise decisions also seem to go against the general narrative of THE FORCE AWAKENS, since Rey is the central character in the film.

Well, check out THIS ARTICLE.  Specifically, these paragraphs about how Rey was not going to be the central focus of licensed merchandise marketing efforts dating back to meetings in January of 2015:

In January 2015, a number of toy and merchandise vendors descended on Lucasfilm’s Letterman Center in San Francisco. In a series of confidential meetings, the vendors presented their product ideas to tie in with the highly-anticipated new Star Wars film. Representatives presented, pitched, discussed, and agreed upon prototype products. The seeds of the controversies Lucasfilm is facing regarding the marketing and merchandising of The Force Awakens were sown in those meetings, according to the industry insider.

The insider, who was at those meetings, described how initial versions of many of the products presented to Lucasfilm featured Rey prominently. At first, discussions were positive, but as the meetings wore on, one or more individuals raised concerns about the presence of female characters in the Star Wars products. Eventually, the product vendors were specifically directed to exclude the Rey character from all Star Wars-related merchandise, said the insider.

“We know what sells,” the industry insider was told. “No boy wants to be given a product with a female character on it.”

Lucasfilm did not respond to requests for comment by press time.

The industry insider went on to describe how excluding female action characters has been a common yet frustrating trend over the past few years. “Diminishing of girl characters is common in the industry. Power Rangers asked us to do it. Paw Patrol, too.” (Update: we’ve learned that Paw Patrol is currently working on a new line of toys for girls.)

If this is indeed true, it gives some insight into the institutional thinking about the marketing of female characters VS male characters.  The fact that nobody would openly go on record is telling as well.  Because it seems more and more like this general discussion about how female characters are represented in licensed merchandise is getting some legs.  This general issue started getting more traction with the REBELS toy line and the relatively light representation for Sabine and Hera.  But now with THE FORCE AWAKENS, where Rey is the focal point?  This is a much bigger deal now.

The Sequel Trilogy / First Order Stormtrooper Transport
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:40 AM »
One of the interesting developments of the vehicle/starship front has to be the new First Order Stormtrooper Transport.  This is NOT your PT era Republic Gunship by any stretch of the imagination.  This is much more like a WWII Higgins boat landing craft from Omaha beach.  And it's one of the first vehicles we see in THE FORCE AWAKENS.  What do you think of this new vehicle?

The Original Trilogy / Marcia Lucas's impact on the OT
« on: December 28, 2015, 07:52 AM »
Check out this News.com.au article about Marcia Lucas.  Marcia was married to George Lucas and was also an accomplished film editor.  George and Marcia met in the late 60's while working on film projects together.  And when George was working on the first Star Wars film he brought in his wife Marcia as an editor the OT films.  Some have regarded her as the 'Secret Weapon' of the OT, having been very much responsible for editing key story points that proved to be pivotal to the story in ANH and the other OT films.
