Saga Collection '06 / Re: Battle of Tatooine Wave

I'm not sure about Luke- I like the commtech body except the lack of wrist articulation, but I really don't like this head better than the commtech head. It's okay... but it's not amazing. The commtech head looks like Luke in ESB to me though, so it's not quite perfect for ANH either.

What really botehrs me about this head though, is that his lips seem to be brown- the same color as his hair. Why? ??? Why not leave them skin tone? As it is he reminds me of my old mid '90s-era Bend-em's Luke.

I could swear I'd seen pictures of commtech Luke that didn't have the boot paint on the knees like in the comparison picture... but if they all do, then that is a good point of improvement on this new Luke. Actually, other than the lips the paint is good as a whole.

The accessories though... they seem to really make this figure. The poncho looks very nice, and I love that box- the pilot headset is a wonderful little touch, and the training ball thing is appreciated as well (although I would've liked a removeable one even better).

But the lightsabers aren't as cool as they could be; Obi Wan's should be removeable, and Luke's is kinda... simple. There's no paint, no hole, and it doesn't fit on his belt... I wouldn't complain about owning it but it's not the epitomy of awesomeness either. I would've liked to see an ignited saber or a removeable blade here, too- heck, just reprint the saber from Evolutions Anakin and it'd be cooler.

He looks kind of cool, but buying it isn't too high on my priorities list :/ R5, though, I'll be getting as soon as I can afford to I think.

What's sad about having to buy the 2004 re-dos, just to get the OOT versions, are all the errors in the lightsaber color-correction. (i.e. Luke's green saber during the training remote scene and Vader's fashionable "pink" blade in ESB & ROTJ)
Well, this may prove to be exactly what's released, but on the other hand this is George Lucas- I give it a 75% probability that these versions are further edited. I don't expect anything major, but I have the feeling the Tie fighter "green force fields" in ANH and even more so the afforementioned lightsaber discolorations will both be edited/fixed.

Personally, I want to see the original version of ANH with all of Biggs' scenes, and Luke witnessing the opening scene battle at a distance with his macrobinoculars, re-added to the movie and all the original cheesy special effects; the DVD version of ESB as-is (although they might edit the new Emporer hologram to be a little shadier and harder to see quite so clearly- it gave him intrigue); and a version of ROTJ just like the DVD version sans that wretched SE song scene, and with a new, modified/refilmed Hayden ghost- Hayden Christensen with a less creepy/more warm smile, and make up/hair color changed to make him look a vague amount older.

And those versions will never, ever be made. :(

Saga Collection '06 / Re: ? for openers
« on: May 21, 2006, 02:42 PM »
If it's especially valuable, I think twice- and then I probably trade it off for a couple loose figures I'd rather have :)

I would never, ever consider opening a vintage figure. VOTC and VTSC on the other hand are so getting opened unless it's C3POS.

UGH figures... if it's a figure I really want, I'd open it- like if I found a UGH Fett- unless I could get a better deal via trading. I don't really respect hte UGH campaign that much, it seems like money-grubbing against collectors, plus I wouldn't mind having a silver stand or two in my display.

EU figures, while rare, I'd probably open unless I already have a loose one (I wouldn't be opening a Thrawn at this point) and have no real use for another (Luke might get opened).

Basically, if it's valuable and I don't need it, I won't open it... and if it's in certain categories (Vintage, crazy rare items, etc.) I still wouldn't open it, but every figure I own is currently opened now (though, the most valuable are probably VTSC Han, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and Captain Piett- I don't have anything that's really "rare.").

1. SA Jedi Knight/Death Star II Luke with non-VOTC, new headsculpt- with removeable (softgoods maybe?) tunic, belt, and swappable right hand (one gloved, one not); for accessories a new cloth cloak, ROTS Obi Wan saber and hilt mold with appropriate different colors, and Saga '04 Jabba's Palace Luke blaster
2. Endor/General Leia, all-new sculpt with removeable cloth poncho/plastic belt, removeable helmet, and her blaster (new sculpt)
3. General Gear Lando Calrissian resculpt w/ more articulation and cloth cape
4. Endor Luke with removeable cloth poncho/plastic belt, removeable helmet, and ROTS Obi Wan saber and hilt mold w/ different colors
5.Ewok Celebration Leia resculpt
6. SA Emperor with Throne (good idea!) and 2 Saga Dooku/Aayla Secura force lightning effects
7. Wedge Antilles resculpt using some VTSC X-Wing Luke parts
8. Mara Jade/Arica (I agree)
9. Admiral Ackbar resculpt
10. Nien Nunb Resculpt

For reprints, I want to see VOTC Chewbacca and the VOTC Stormtrooper :)

Power of the Force 2 / Re: FF Weequy sells for $6.50

Yep, holding the opened card in my hand, it was not a freeze frame figure, but in fact has the shiny sticker. So hopefully not worth all that much, then, right? And as I said, the card was (well, still is of course) bent.

Uhh.... don't tell me carded Weequays are normally worth a lot? American ones, at least? >.>

...if they are, tell me that it's worth a lot less if the card's warped, so I didn't wreck some sort of collector's item a few months ago that I didn't need just so I could fill a little more space on my ROTJ shelf.

Wait- freeze frame Weequay, was there more than one release? I don't really recall mine having a freeze frame, so if the others are more common I'm pretty sure that's what I had.

Hey! This R5 loks like his paintjob is better than R2, there are some details here that were blank n mine- like those bars on the third leg and the silver next to the "ankes." Glad to see that improved.

Though, the same smeared/streaked dirt seems to return here... oh well. I'm pretty happy with the looks of this figure overall :)

Hey yeah, I remember hearing of Animorphs. I'd hate to see that happen to Star Wars! ;)

I think you might be right about the X-Men thing although I haven't seen it enough times to be sure.

While I don't collect them, I kind of appreciate the existance of the Star Wars transformers... I know some people that actually really like them.

I think I will be making an archival copy in the next couple weeks sometime, and then I'll buy whatever DVDs make the most sense at the time once I have and am willing to spend $35+ on a set.

5. Veers body with new Tarkin, Motti and Piett heads.
I like that choice, but I'd rather see the earlier Saga Admiral Ozzel body used- better height and no indentions for the armor to clamp on, and- correct me if I'm wrong- I think the articulation was the same.

Toy Reviews / Re: New JD Review: VTSC Han (Trench Coat)
« on: May 19, 2006, 03:44 PM »
Well, having done an actual headswap I still have to say he looks a little funny. The neck isn't truly giraffe but it seems to be a little longer than Harrison Ford's based on photo comparison, and it's longer than any other human figure I have. It doesn't truly look unrealistic... just a bit weird. Perhaps part of what makes it seem long is his low collar, though.

If you pose him right, it looks okay... and if you pose him wrong he looks bizarre. Having the trenchcoat on helps his case though.

I'm not sure if I'll want to leave it or not... it'd be perfect if I could just shorten the neck a little though. perhaps, since a new paintjob is needed anyway, I could actually cut off a small bit of the upper neck and lower the ball?... and then to use the VTSC head on another figure, perhaps the top of the head could be filled in somehow to make it rest higher on a different ball joint.

For your pleasure or disgust, a photo comparison- sorry for the horrible scanner picture again- with the real thing:

That sounds like a cool idea for a SOTE Luke, but it's a bit out of my price range- I'm actually planning to make a SOTE Luke out of POTF2 parts to make him match up with the other SOTE figures. I want to do something cooler than the age-old "Take a Jedi Luke and a yellow cereomonial Luke vest and put them together" thing though- accuracy is a good thing ;) I'm thinking SOTE legs, Carbonite Han torso and arms with extended sleeves and part of the collar sanded down so I can paint it black- his SOTE shirt had a ROTJ type collar- and then a ceromonial Luke vest. But that's another subject altogether.

Again, I don't mean by my criticisms to imply that VTSC Han is in any way a bad figure- he's one of the best out there IMO, he just missed a few little points that could've resulted in perfection.

Three leg special? ??? The last I heard he was a reprint of VOTC/TSC R2D2 with a new head and paintjob, which means articulation at the neck, top of the legs, and "ankles," with a removeable third leg. All three "feet" have wheels on the bottoms, and he's got this oh-so-groovy glued-on panel.

So, R5 is good for doing whatever R5 does in the movie as well as portraying other, similar droids, or just playing with or whatever... which is cool in my book, far better than "Launchpad" R5.

I would actually buy a couple Hans for customs if I couldn't get the same figure with a different head for $3 or more less on eBay at any given moment.

The Original Trilogy / Re: Holy Trilogy on DVD!
« on: May 19, 2006, 01:30 AM »
Hmm... if this information is accurate, maybe I'll buy used 2004 DVDs and go ahead and burn my own DVD off a 1990 VHS tape (in a completely legal fashion of course and I'll, uhh, get rid of it in 24 hours) or not because that'd be slightly illegal. Right.

Ehh, we'll see. But I'll say that these are the times it's good to not keep up with currently-released stuff, because it means by the time I get something I'll be able to pick and choose my options. :) See, with videogames it just means that I've got more to catch up on...

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Terrible Previously Released Figures
« on: May 19, 2006, 01:22 AM »
Yes, as I said, my view of rather a figure is rubbish is dependant on rather it did something wrong that was really uneccesary/easily avoided given the standards at the time. R5D4 could've been a nice, normal figure made in the same fashion as the first POTF2 R2D2, but no, for some reason he splits in half and fires this yellow plastic thing and has cannons on his legs. ??? Thus, rubbish.

The POTF2s really didn't need to be buff, that was a marketing idea the same as action features and other intentional crud thrown in to "excite kids." But the buffness only periodically really killed the figures (Rebel Fleet Trooper), and some got away okay in spite of it (most Han Solos), at least at the time. The same can again be said of action features, which can totally ruin a figure (Saga Deluxe Slashing Anakin's faults, other than that headsculpt, can all be traced down to the action feature) or just be a mild impediment (Bespin Duel Luke is a good example).

People's standards are different, and a figure someone loves someone else might think is garbage, so this is just my view of what really makes a figure sucky. But too, the faults that plagued entire lines overall do make those figures less cool from a right-now standpoint; so it's a matter of certain lines/groups having universal/common flaws, but only some of them truly being bad figures for it when viewed in perspective.

Personally, I kind of like General Lando in a way, but I can't call him a good figure either. :)

Now here's a hip 'n groovy figure:

Back in the earlier pats of the POTJ line Hasbro seemed to exhibit some pre-Saga behavior with a group of main character figures people wanted, that were all stuck in "hi, I'm running and holding my gun with both hands" poses. POTJ Lando, Bespin Leia, and worst of all this Han all suffered from this condition, but I can forgive the other two figures a lot more easily than this one because they're pretty decent otherwise. But this figure is bad news unless you're a customizer who's going to use the arms and reposition the left hand, or who likes the head despite the Jerry O'Connell likeness, or you just want the gun and the belt. The torso is leaning and the legs are also stuck in action land, and it reminds me oh so much of my Coruscant Chase Obi Wan. I have no clue what I'm going to do with those parts...

But you know what the best part of this guy is? His grip is too small to hold the blaster. Yes, it's true, he can't hold that blaster unless you squish the handle or pry open the hand and slip it in. It looks like the same hand mold as Cantina Han almost, but it seems to be just a little bit smaller and tighter, and this blaster has a bigger handle than Cantina Han's pistol.

Here's another moldy oldie (that's not that old):

I have a little bit of a soft spot for this guy, but I have to admit he sucks. Why is he in this pose? The other POTF2s at the time weren't doing this and so this bout of suckiness can be fully attributed to him. Also, the Torso is typical POTF2 Schwartzineggar fare, which is kind of disappointing to be later in the line as this figure was.

I'm told this was the best Anakin around when it was made, and that's sad. He's almost as bad as Coruscant Chase Obi Wan, and that headsculpt looks like Bruce Campbell in Anakin Skywalker disguise to me. Not good.

Speaking of terrible Anakins, was he auditioning to play a Ferengi?

By not-really-popular demand, here's a 3PO worse than the VOTC. He seems to have fallen into a jelly jar, he's got a weird mark on his chest akin that of John Doe (obscurish, probably soon-to-be-cancelled scifi show), and he's kinda... stumpy. Fortunately he's got a nice little escape pod, but that doesn't really help the figure itself...

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: ROTS: one year later.....
« on: May 18, 2006, 09:53 PM »
Hmm... Palpatine was a little over the top I suppose, but for the most part it all really flowed to me, and I got this feeling of "Just as I expected" from him. Palpatine is a character to be despised in my book, so his disgustingness seemed appropriate a lot of the time.

Hadyn Christiansen is indeed amateurish, but he just seemed so much better in this movie than the previous that I didn't mind it here. His emotions and his manner seemed very accurate to what I was expecting, and you could see the mental battle he was going through. The way he became Vader felt like Vader was sort of a seperate entity, a seperate personality that began forming in AOTC with the sand people, and then grew. It wasn't really like Anakin became Vader insomuch as Anakin tried to fight for what he loved and instead found himself destroyed by Vader because he felt it was the only way to achieve what he was trying to do. Only afterwards did he get it, though...

The frankenstein-ish moving seemed about right for someone who was in incredible emotional and physical pain trying to storm out on a new pair of legs- it's surprising he didn't fall on his face actually. And his cry of "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO," while highly mockable in it's own way, was also actually a very emotional moment to me- you can say whatever you want about what he should've done, but I believe that in his position that's exactly what one would do. And I liked the way he was tearing apart everything around him through the force... and the way Palpatine just sort of chuckled, knowing that he'd gotten exactly what he wanted. Ugh.

The dialogue between Anakin and Padme in episode II was, IMO, painful. "I'm dying inside and it's all your fault!!!" Give me a break. But in Episode III they both acted appropriately, the right mix of love and pain, and most of what was said was short and to the point- very appropriate I think. I didn't hate any of their scenes here.

Episode III is not my favorite in the series, but I consider it just about perfect for what it was. My order of favorites is this:

ROTJ
ESB
ANH - ROTS (apples and oranges really)
AOTC
TPM

Frankly, I urge anybody who sees ROTS for the first time to, if they haven't in a while, resee ROTJ afterwards- it all really clicks that way I think, or it does for me at least.
