Post by: FX-7 on January 30, 2004, 01:36 PM
What do you want on your Pizza Pie if you get one?
Where do you order from?

We only have Pizza **** and Dominoes out here and we usually get Hawaiian style (Canadian Bacon and Pineapple) hand tossed crust...mmmmmmm pizza

Papa Murphy's for me please, usually just get the Pepperoni, $5.99, can't beat it.  There is a local chain around here than beats all of the big boys called Carbone's, great pizza, we'll get that delivered any time over Dominoes or Pizza Hutt (Papa John's is the only one I would consider)

I'm not sure how people even can digest Pizza Hutt Pizza, it is ALWAYS cold in the middle, especially if you get a supreme

First of all, I don't think anyone calls it a Pizza Pie anymore Lenny...   :P

That said, I'll eat pizza ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.  Been my absolute favorite food ever since I could first eat!  My family actually used to call me the "Pizza Monster" when I was growing up.  I'm pretty picky though, and hate all that vegie and "everything" crap.  I usually strictly adhere to Sausage and/or Pepperoni.  Don't matter from where!  Just give me the pizza!!!   8)

Shakeys, Lamppost, Dominos, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, the super market... whatever!  I'd eat pizza several times a week all through college, but I've probably cut back to just several times a month now, like a good boy...

I feel horribly sad for you that all you have available to you is the garbage that Pizza Hut and Dominos serves up. Living in Chicagoland, there's a cornucopia of pizza options for me to grab at. Some of the great places include Lou Malnatis (effectionately known as LouMo's or LouMal's), Giordanos, and Father & Son's, as well as tons of smaller places. If anyone is ever interested in getting REAL Chicago Deep Dish delievered to their home, LouMo's can ship it to you anywhere in the continental US, check em out at http://www.loumalnatis.com/ (http://www.loumalnatis.com/)

BTW I'm a big Pepperoni Pizza fan myself, mmmmmmmmm pepperoni pizza.....  :D

Damn I ate too much Domino's pizza tonight, and this week yo!  They had this special with a large 1 topping pie, 2L Coke, and some of that silly bread and ohhhh no no no...

::clutches tummy::

I really did it good this time.

And, you'll probably lynch me for saying this, but I just got back from beer n' pizza at PIZZA HUT.

I've always been partial to Hawaiin style - Canadian bacon and pineapples!  I'll eat that anywhere.

I'd love to get out to Chicago sometime and try some real pizza though.   8)

So...how does Lou Malnatis compare to Giordanos? I got them a couple of times when I went to Chicago, and both Pizza Duo (right down the street from Pizza Uno). I think Giordanos was my favorite of the three, but they were all close.

Now...if this cross country pizza delivery is worth trying, I may just have to do it. Have you ever done the "take and bake"?  How is that? (I'm not assuming you've tried their frozens, but take and bake may compare).

I used to have Pizza Inn almost exlusively until they went out of business around here.

Now its Pizza Hut.

I realize there is better Pizza out there, but a flight from Dallas to Chicago just for some Pizza would not be economically feasible.

When I order I get Pepperoni and Extra Cheese and AS LITTLE sauce as possible almost to the extent of NO sauce at all. it is about 50% of the time that it shows up correctly, they usually give me EXTRA sauce.

Lou Malnati's deep dish is much better than Giordanos, it's overall the best deep dish on earth. :) That's not to say Giordanos isn't good, they have a pretty good stuffed pizza. I've never done the take and bake or frozens, so I can't say how good they are. But if you got the cash to spare, it's definitely worth a try.

We're sort of handcuffed by our daughter.  She likes dominoes.  Some days it's good, some days not.  There is another local place called Tony's that makes much, much better pizza with a spicier tomato sauce.  Yum.

Pepperoni, mushroom and pineapple.

They may not refer to Pizza as a "pie" on the left coast Matt, but I hear pizza referred to either as a Pie or a Slice (depending on how hungry you are) whenever I go home to NY.

When I'm in NY, I have to get a pie from D'iNardi's either plain cheese or pepperoni.  Here in Colorado, I go to a place in town called Beaujos or Pizza Hut if I'm in a rush....usually get cheese and bacon.  Everytime I do though I get homesick.

Bar none, Johnny Brusco's pepperoni is probably the best pizza I've ever eaten.  Big, floppy NY style pizza that you fold over and squeeze the grease out of then sop it up with the crust.  YUM.  Cannot get enough of it.

We had no good pizzas in Baton Rouge - weird huh?  best food anywhere, but no pizza.  Just Dominoes, Papa John's, and Pizza Hut pretty much.  I used to have to travel quite a bit and would always try and schedule a lunchtime layover in Atlanta just becaue I knew there was a Sbarro's there. :)

Domionoe's always tastes overcooked and flavorless to me.  Pizza hut is too. . .pizza hut.   On occasion I will crave an Anchovie and Jalapeno pizza from Papa John's, and just for the sheer value we will occasionally pick up a 5.00 pizza from Little Ceasars.  They've started adding garlic and butter to the crust there and for 5.00 it's a pretty decent PIE

Still, nothing will beat Johnny Brusco's.  They deliver to our house, but it's not the same.  Have to eat in so that the cheese is the perfect semi-liquid when they bring it out.

Since then, a new place has opened around town called Mangia. It's Chicago style deep dish pizza, and it's damn good. Everything is homemade, which makes it even better.

My favorite food ;)

But my favorite kinds are, well, weird. I like Pizza Hut and Fazoli's; various kinds of frozen can be good but obviously differ in quality. My favorites are Red Baron, Tony's, and Digornio- though those little Totino's pizzas have a certain appeal somehow as well.

As for toppings, pepperoni, pepperoni and italian sausage, cheese, or four-cheese are all good. One day I want to try anchovies if I can make sure they're headless/finless first.

I tend to like spicy/salty sauce rather than sweet sauce. Domino's is okay, but kinda blah for this reason. I'm also not very wild about crust, although I'm pretty fond of Pizza Hut stuffed crust.

Hard to believe I never jumped into this conversation... I generally just get regular cheese pizza, so here are my favorite places in the cities I've lived in:

Back in Clearwater it was Capogna's Dugout.
In Gainesville it was Leonardo's.
Here in Dallas we get Pastazios or Frazini's.
And in Rome it's Piazza San Callisto - best pizza I've ever had.

Well, which variety are we talking about?

For a thin crust, I really like John's in downtown NYC.  They only serve pies.  Sorry, no slices.  Everything is super fresh, and it's just fantastic.

For deepdish, Chicago really made me a believer.  I recall a couple of places in Chicago that were chains that made a fantastic deep dish pizza.  Giordano's was one.  I'm spacing on the other, though.  But when I was going to Wizard World Chicago about 3 years running, deep dish pizza was always on the itinerary.

we have since discovered a local place called mama mia's that rivals johnny brusco's quality and still tastes good leftover.

another local fave is Greg's pizza, but they have some weird idiosyncrasies with their pizza...first off, instead of cutting the traditional wedge, they cut it into strips...imagine cutting the round pizza in half, then making perpedicular cuts to that half-cut in one inch strips.  odd.  also they put their pepperonni under the chese instead of on top...tastes good, looks good, but there's nothing to grip for toppings so especially with the strip cut, everything tends to schloff off the top.

And in honor of Rob's three day fast, I'll add this:

my secretary discovered a chinese place that delivers to our office so we ordered that for lunch.  just arrived and it's a TON of food...ordered general tso's - 5.25.  came with a big portion of the general, huge scoop of fried rice, wontons, an egg roll and a cup of egg drop soup.  Can't get over the portion to price ratio here...and it's pretty damned tasty.

Well it might be a chain back home, but to me the best pizza in the world is still Mr Gatti's regular crust pizza!!! They are the only pizza place in my hometown that uses smoked provologne, which gives the pizza the most unique, but flavorful taste!! Their sauce is  nice combination of tomato goodness with a touch of spices that comebine to make a perfect sauce! Their toppings are even different!! I can eat pepperoni in most pizza shops, but at Gatti's is the only place in which I will get sausage topping! Again their method of preparing it differs from all others, it doesn't have the same hum drum flavor that pretty much every other place has. Smaller, flavorful pieces of sausage make it the best out of any of the other oridinary pizza shops!

Oh and don't forget their desert pizza, the chocoloate creme pizza is sinfully delicious!

Unfortunately the only place up here that is decent is dominoes, and only their thin and cripy. Oh and Panera's thin and crispy is fantastic as well!!

So, there's this new pizza place, called Rosie's New York Pizza, that opened just down the block from my home. The place even has a "pizza chef," so I was intrigued, if not excited. Keep in mind this is San Jose, California; about as far from New York as one can get in the continental U.S. I ordered a large pizza with eggplant, olives, mushrooms and tomatoes (they call it a Madison Square Garden). It was $26, but hey, this is the Silicon Valley; everything's expensive. Anyway, I get it home and see that the crust is a little dark (not black, but definitely dark) and hard (when I fold one of the slices, it doesn't bend, it cracks). I optimistically start eating it anyway, but it tastes a little burnt. So, I do what any hardworking person would do and call up the place and explain that my pie was burnt and I'd like a replacement. They say sure and I bring it back. So, when I show up to return it, they take a look at it and tell me that's the way it's supposed to be ("This is what a New York pizza is like."). They do give me a replacement pie, but it's the exact same way. They even instructed me on ways to eat it, "You have to fold the slice." But even several days later, this experience is still on my mind. Is this really how a New York pizza is or is this place just not my cup of tea?

So, fellow JD readers, what say you? What's a New York pizza like? Should the crust crack down the middle and taste of charred cardboard? Where's the best pizza in the country? What's a Chicago pizza? Are my wussy California tastebuds all out of whack so that only flexible golden brown crust will do? Please feel free to discuss your favorite type of pie.

Find a Johnny Brusco's somewhere.  Order a simple pepperoni pizza.   Perfection of the form.

Thanks, guys. I knew there was something wrong with it.

As for my favorite pizza, it's gotta be a simple cheese, tomatoes and basil made by a local chain by the name of Pizza My Heart. Oddly enough, they advertise that their pizza is "New York style." I guess that's the true NY style.

Yeah, I'm having some serious pizza cravings, too. May have to indulge later...but not at Rosie's crap-style pizza.  :P
