I saw a good Genosis WIP over at Galactic Hunter.  I'll try to see if I can dig out a link.

Edited:  Here is a link (http://www.galactichunter.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Dioramas&Number=114881&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)

He used spray on insulation to form the spires.

TO make a spire ive seen it somewhere

1. take a styrofoam cone a large one, and a few cylinders the same diameter as the base of the cone to make it tall.

2.Then place any object that you can wrap around the cone and base then glue those in place. and then glue vertical rods around it in some places as according to a reference pic.

3. next mix a large amount of plaster of paris then slowly pour it over each spire slowly is the key word. that way it builds up on teh rings of the spire to give it that bumpy work, this will make a totally solid spire so you can't put geonosians inside the spire.

Why not spray glue some dirt on plywood?

I made a Geonosis diorama, I tell ya! :P I can't get pics up at the moment, but I basically cut all of the structures from this styrofoam-like stuff that you get at craft stores (It's green, comes in blocks, and you're supposed to stick fake flowers in it.) I made the spire from two of those blocks, then glued those halves together. It is not very tall, but I like it. I glued down all of the other land features, then covered it with metal screening, like the kind you'd use to put outside your windows to keep bugs out. The spire did not get the screen treatment. I then covered everything in paper machette(sp.) and after it dried, I painted it a rust color. All this was done two years ago with a friend, so I'm probably leaving out some things.  :P Hope that helps, and I'll try to post pictures of it some day. Some day.   :P
