Title: Catwoman
Post by: Mainland05 on April 8, 2004, 02:35 PM
Anyone excited to see this film, I know seeing Halle Berry kick some ass is always something I love to watch!

What do you think about the film that is going to be released on 8-6-04?

That costume looks like sh!t.  No self respecting vigilante super hero would wear something like that.

My prediction: bomb.  Hot women does not a movie make (porn excluded)

I had thought WB would have learned their lesson with Birds of Prey. You just can't take Batman out his own mythos.

I've yet to read one positive thing about this "Catwoman." It not only ignores the comic book character it's based on, it ignores the entire legend. WB put out some marketing info last year that read:

- This is not your older brother's Catwoman.
- She is a departure from the familiar DC Comics Catwoman.
- Forget Batman.
- Forget Gotham City.
- Forget heist pictures and cat burglars.
- This is the Catwoman of the ages, the Catwoman of legends.
- This Catwoman is an original.

They also promoted the property with the line "a nocturnal hero doesn't mean a dark world:"

- A futuristic city.
- A place where you'd like to live.
- A landscape of chrome and bright colors.

Forget Gotham City indeed. And like the latest model automobile, they listed "Patience's New Options:"

- Enhanced night vision.
- Catlike grace and agility.
- Ability to land on her feet.
- Stalking instincts.
- Stealth-like maneuverability.
- Spring-loaded leaps.
- Craving for fish, cream and revenge.

Sorry, but if it doesn't have anything to do with Batman, why bother calling it "Catwoman?"

Her origin is so similar to The Crow they'd be better off calling it "Copycatwoman."  ::)

I have no interest in going to watch hit-and-run Halle play Catwoman.  I didn't care for her as Storm and I when I saw that Oprah clip I just about gagged.  No thanks!!

The best Catwoman (IMO) was Julie Newmar.  I still have the view master reels of Batman and she was the actress in those and the only one I really remember.

I like the idea of Halle Berry as Catwoman.  A lot.  That costume is near box office poison, though.  I haven't seen the clip.  Is it really that bad?

Agreed.

I genuinely like Halle Berry, but think she might have a wee tad of a self destructive bent.  Pity, seems genuine and bright.

The costume makes no sense.  Precisely why would she be clawing the thigh region of her costume?  Mikey's obvious allusion aside, it makes no sense.

As far as black goes for catwoman, Spooky is absolutely right, Eartha Kitt, as others also pointed out, was black as well, pretty much at the same time as Uhura (Michelle _____) was breaking down barriers on Star Trek.  Not at all trying to start a war here, but you have to remember that back when the comics were first coming out, racism was particularly rampant, insipid and quite frankly, normal.  I'm old enough to remember that most of my parents generation bluntly put, were racist.  It was the norm of that time.  Not that it was right, but you tend to reflect what society considers normal.  As such, very, very few comics had anything other than caucasian roles.  End of sermon/history lesson/soapbox.

Halle Berry is half-and-half.

Is that the proper terminology?

Well, the proper term is Malato (sp?)

But she doesn't look half/half. She looks full blown white in these.

Actually, I think that's a derogatory term. I'm really not sure what's PC these days.

This movie looks like the biggest piece of garbage I've ever seen...like Battlefield Earth bad.

I don't understand why Catwoman isn't wearing ummm...I don't know...a Catsuit??

Give me Julie Newmar or Lee Meriwether.

I knew it would be bad, but I didnt think it would suck so bad as that trailer seems to suggest.  I'd rather videotape myself puking for an hour and just watch that.  I imagine thats what I'll be doing if I watch that anyway... Puking for an hour...

Title: Re: Catwoman
Post by: MisterPL on July 6, 2004, 04:35 PM
Scott, do you really want to know?

It started when WB wanted to spinoff Michelle Pfieffer's Catwoman from Batman Returns into her own franchise. She said she'd love to so long as Burton directed it. Turned out getting these two in the same studio together was tougher than scheduling Indiana Jones IV and the project went away, especially after what happened with Burton's failed (but expensive) Superman project and Schumacher's Batman nosedive.

Years later, the project was still considered viable with a new leading lady but the same Crow-knockoff origin from Batman Returns; Timid chick gets murdered and is resurrected via kitties to avenge her own death. But in order to distance this Catwoman from the last Bat-disasters, it was decided that this would be an entirely new character. No Batman, no Gotham, but the same origin with a twist; this time she gets super powers!

Ashley Judd was romanced for the lead role, but after reading the script and realizing it had nothing to do with the Batman mythos, she bowed out. Enter the next flavor of the moment, Oscar™ award-winning actress Halle Berry. Now all they needed was a cheap new director with a visual flair to package it. That's where French newcomer Pitof came in.

After seeing the extended trailer in front of Spider-Man 2, I have to admit there's some nice eye candy in there. Not enough to make me pay to get in, of course, but I am curious to see if they really make no mention of Batman. (Rumor has it an "east coast Catwoman" is mentioned, but that's about it. Fanboy speculation had the lead love interest actually being Bruce Wayne in disguise at one point, but I think people are simply justifying wanting to see this bastardization).

This movie was ill-conceived from the beginning. While it MIGHT have been interesting to see a Pfieffer/Burton spinoff TEN YEARS AGO, this project should have died with the last Bat-franchise. Catwoman could have been an intriguing prequel to Batman Begins, but those in charge of its production had waited too long already to get this movie to theatres and were no doubt under pressure to get it wrapped up in spite of a major franchise relaunch only 11 months away. Now they're counting on Catwoman's brand appeal and Berry's box office bankability to break even.

Hopefully audiences will mostly forget this incarnation in time for next year's model. I'd much rather see a Selina Kyle spinoff that's faithful to the source material than something made up by studio execs under pressure to milk a dead franchise.

Yeah I did want to know, thanks for the history lesson.

Looking at the success of all things Marvel right now (with the exception of probably never seeing an Avengers movie due to liscensing issues) the DC/Warner movie franchise is the biggest joke in the history of history.  Part of the problem may be that they've been there done that with both Batman and Superman but they too have stable of main guys that they could develop into movies...Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Lantern I'm looking in your directions

The Batman franchise started so promising (the Summer of '89 was one of those years that I'll never forget) and I hope it regains the luster it once had (heck even Batman Returns wasn't that bad).

Wow what a mess and one that the Marvel peeps have to laughing at all the way to the bank

This new Cat-flick looks like to be up to par with the tank that was Batman and Robin. What a cat-astrophe! As far as I'm concerned Catwoman was done properly in Batman Returns.

It's no small irony that at the same time WB's studio execs had given up on the comic book movie genre due to Batman's demise, the movie that quietly started this comic book movie renaissance was Blade, a surprisingly popular film produced by WB's own New Line division based on a property owned by Marvel Comics. These execs have been blasted for not being able to do what Marvel (and other studios) have. Here WB is sitting on the rights to the characters that popularized the genre and they can't seem to get it right.

When I saw Kevin Costner FLYING through the ocean in Waterworld, I thought, "THAT'S how Aquaman should swim!" What worries me now is
that any Aquaman project would look too much like Namor, which is already in development.

Green Lantern is rumored to be in the works with Adam Sandler in the title role, but I can't help drawing immediate comparisons to The Mask.

Wonder Woman is taking longer to get to the screen than Spider-Man, but for completely different reasons. Last I heard they still didn't have a script everyone (IE - informal corporate focus groups) liked.

The Flash was going to get the Smallville treatment this fall as a college student with the power of superspeed (including the ability to time travel), but the pilot was canned.

Captain Marvel is in development at New Line, though. I've got high hopes for the studio that brought us that fantasy trilogy the last couple years. But again, I'm worried a kickass SHAZAM! will only be perceived as a Superman knockoff.

(And don't get me going on the Superman franchise.
There's not enough web space...)

I want to be the Avi Arad of DC Comics, dammit!

Halle Berry's career going down the tubes!

Review: 'Catwoman' a muddled bore (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/22/review.catwoman.ap/index.html)

If Laurel and Catwoman started making out at the top of the Hedare beauty headquarters, instead of trying to throw each other off it, even that wouldn't make the movie any more interesting.

If the "Spider-Man" movies represent all that can be wondrous and inspiring in a comic book adaptation, "Catwoman" is the absolute opposite.
