Title: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper
Post by: Brian on March 15, 2005, 09:38 AM
Rebelscum has a report (http://www.rebelscum.com/article.asp?i=90310) up detailing a number of possible Target store exclusives (outside of the red, metallic, lava Vader).  Here's what is rumored:

Due on April 2nd:

087-06-0937 - Figures with Cups
087-06-1262 - Micro Vehicles
087-06-0311 - Collector Edition Darth Vader with Laval Reflection Figure

Due on May 8th:

087-06-1489 - Collector Edition Stormtrooper/SW Articulated Super Clone Trooper
087-06-1490 - 5-pack Collector Cases

Some of these sound quite cool, and I'm personally happy there might be more figure/cup combos...for the cups anyways :).  Collector edition Stormtrooper/Clonetrooper sounds cool too.  Also, anyone have further info on the 5 pack collector cases?  I thought I heard these rumored awhile back as well.

Wow.  Target is snatching up the exclusives.  Gonna battle that evil Wal-Mart for the SW merch.

Well, these we alreay knew about...
087-06-1262 - Micro Vehicles
087-06-0311 - Collector Edition Darth Vader with Laval Reflection Figure

As for these...

087-06-0937 - Figures with Cups

This is the same DPCI that the Saga Figure with Cups had.   :-\  I don't know if this means we'll finally see the cancelled Wave 2 - Han, Yoda, Boba Fett (http://www.jedidefender.com/newspro/fullnews.cgi?newsid1093442269,4744,) or will it just be left-overs from the Saga stuff?

087-06-1489 - Collector Edition Stormtrooper/SW Articulated Super Clone Trooper
087-06-1490 - 5-pack Collector Cases

I haven't heard anything other than rumors at this point abotu the other two items.  Nice to see that DPCI #s have turned up, that kind of helps to confirm the rumors that they are coming.

Have to go digging to the Target contacts and see what I can find...

These Stormtrooper/Clonetrooper things sounds cool... but something tells me these won't be OT styled Stormies, but ROTS ones (which is ok).

Wonder what these 5-pks will be... hope not stupid rehashes (unless they are good army-builders).

Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?
Post by: Famine on March 15, 2005, 11:45 AM
Hopefully the 5 packs are somthing decent, and not silly repacks. Heck, maybe they will be like the TRU 4 packs. If they are around the same price, I may gladly shell out for that. If it's decent army builders, I will shell out for those too. Hey Hasbro, Episode 1 Battle Droids, hint hint? I'd like to aquire a set of the glasses at one point, for my future apartment.

Hmmm... Battle Droids... I would go for a 5-pk with 5 Battle Droids, preferrably the POTJ Security Droid without the red markings.

In my experience though, Target Exclusives are usually hard to find!

The Micro Vehicles and Lava Vader don't do much for me. I'm withholding judgment on the Cup sets. But the 5-packs and Stormie/SA Clone packs sound promising. Though something tells me they'll be scarce--particularly if Target does something boneheaded like restricting the number per store (a la Lava Vader). ::)
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?
Post by: Jesse James on March 15, 2005, 05:18 PM
Making army builders exclusive is a kick in the balls unless Target surprises everyone and actually makes these widely available.  It'd require incredible saturation to do that though, if these are any kind of super articulated figure.

I'll withold judgment, but something tells me this is a bad situation coming for any army builder.

Due on May 8th:

087-06-1489 - Collector Edition Stormtrooper/SW Articulated Super Clone Trooper
087-06-1490 - 5-pack Collector Cases

In light of recent developments ... how exactly does this fit with the 5-figure Battlepacks and the 3-pack Evolutions sets? Or are they all completely separate? ???

In this thread (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1106741&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1#1106741) at the RS forums, someone has posted a pic, albeit very small, of the possible Target/Cup set due on 4/2.  Looks to be a Clonetrooper (#6) with Glass.  I'm always a fan of these glasses, although now I wish I would have gotten the Maul and Anakin cups to have the "complete" set :).

I've sent word to my Targt contacts, but have yet to receive any answers about what the deal is with the Cup Exclusive and any of the later exclusives.   :'(

I almost forgot about the 3 pack evolution sets...were not these supposed to be available this Sat.?

The five packs have potential if they consist of figures everybody wants...really this work well with the OT.

-Vader with 2 stormtroopers, Motti and Tarkin would be neat.

-Hoth Luke with Hoth Han, Leia, Chewie and Reiken.

-Obi Wan with 2 clonies, droid, and Anakin.

-Dooku with Jango, Sidious, & two battle/super droids.

Man, I wish I worked for Hasbro!

Got an e-mail tonight with a possible update:

Target RotS Figure w/Cup Sets

General Grievous w/Cup
Obi-Wan Kenobi w/Cup
Clone Trooper w/Cup

No pictures yet, nor do I have any idea which versions the figures are included or if they are re-packs...

Thanks for the info Jeff, I'm personally excited about more glass sets, although I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea.  Anyways, it looks like SirSteve's (http://www.sirstevesguide.com/news/?m=show&id=31212) has some pics up confirming the first wave of Grievous, Obi, and the Clone.

Looks like the SSG pics came from eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2476&item=5966953740&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW):

I like the fact that the cup is different for each.

I kinda wish that I would have known about this sooner, I'd have skipped the Preview Grievous to buy this set.

I guess I'll end up buying 1 of each now...

I thought the same thing Jeff, I wish I would have known, I'd have skipped the Preview Grievous as well.  I wonder if we'll be seeing/getting these cup sets tomorrow?  If so, will it be all three, or just one at a time, spread out?  So strange that we don't see official announcements on these types of things, via Hasbro, Target, or whoever.

How much do these cups run? I'd like to get 8 of the clone cups. Not just for the clones, but the fact that from what I can see, these are pretty damn neat. I'm going to enjoy these. :)

How much do these cups run?

I believe that they run about $10 each.  And, it would seem they will be packed evenly per case 2x Grievous, 2x Obi-Wan, 2x Clone so tracking down 8 of them might be a pretty hard thing to do...

I'm really wanting to know what the deal is with these 5 packs and Stormtrooper/Clonetrooper sets.

How cool would it be if the Stormtrooper/Clonetrooper set was just a SA body with interchangable helmets from troopers of Episode 2, 3, and the OT?

That'd kick ass.

Well over at you know where, there are pics of the five packs - and they are exactly as I predicted - rehashes.

I hate to brag, but I did a better job using rehashes than the Big H....although I do need that Asaj lady....and is that the Commtech stormie begging for mercy?

But the top pic looks like some new figures are in it.

Anakin and Yoda definitely look new, and maybe the Kenobi too... and the Ventress dress/skirt thing looks different.

I'm all over that set.  Might get two of them.

Yeah, those are the 5-pack battle builders that we have been discussing for a while now over here (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=6758.0).

These are NOT the Target exclusives mentioned in the first post... at least I don't think so because almost all of the e-tailers are taking pre-orders for them.

There is enough confusion with all the exclusves planned right now (thanks Hasbro! ::)), I just wanted to make sure no one was getting further confused is all.

That Grievous seems different though, the legs look straighter. I'll pick up him and Obi-Wan depending on what they look like in person.

All-in-all - I would have to say that of all four chains that had exclusives, I am the MOST pleased with Target.

TRU botched their Holo Yoda (granted I got one, but A LOT of people ended up pissed on Friday night)

KB Toys had me buying the EXACT SAME 12" scaled Chewie figure only in different packaging!

WalMart gave us a box of air and the Darth Vader carrying case - AGAIN...

Target on the other hand had the Lava Reflection Vader - which was in plentiful supply (everyone who lined up got one) and they had cup w/figure sets (all three cups are great IMHO) and the micro vehicles (which I passed on, but at least it was something DIFFERENT).

Target also went the extra mile with that $1 coupon that we got in the mail - it brought down figures to $4.99 and I was able to get the cups for $8.99 - not too shabby either.

Agree with you totally on Target having the best roll-out my man!

I loved the gift card!  That was rerally neat, and very well done.  Lave Vader was very nice.  The figs/cup sets are great, and they didn;t last but a few min. at my Target.

Nice spending the time with you in front of TARGET sat morn.. (in the rain - LOL)...

For the rest of the JD clan, the LavaVader is available right this second online
with an estimated delivery of this weekend...

p.s. you have to turn on "1-click order processing" before you'll be able to get
thru checkout without the LavaVader vanishing from your cart.  Turn on 1-click,
then keep refreshing the above page until you see the "Buy with 1-click" button...

THEN PRESS IT QUICK ! ;D

Galactic Hunter has some pics up of another Target exclusive, this time a Clonetrooper with red markings (http://www.galactichunter.com/absolutenm/templates/full_article_template_1.asp?articleid=4365&zoneid=2).  Apparently, it has been found at a store in CA, with a retail price of $12.99.  Although the price is a bit steep, it sure looks neat.  I didn't ever see the Lava Vader, and didn't want it really anyways, but I sure hope I can come across one of these.

Just how the hell does two half circles of paint make a $6 figure DOUBLE in price?

I'll still get one, but two at the most. If I get more cash, I'll see if I can get more than that, if I even find them.

FYI,

My understanding is a 5/8/05 release date = Mother's Day.  Great reason for me to get up bright and early to get my wifey an nice Momy's Day Gift!

I'm not thrilled on the price, but I guess with all the advertising Target has been doing of late I can live with it.

I wonder if there will be a limit on how many you can get at one time.  And of course I wonder if there will be uniformity as to the policies at each store.  I have 2 Targets within 5 minutes of each other, so hopefully I'll be able to get mine and some extras for my buddies without Targets...

If you look at the picture of this in the image archive from CIII - the tag in front of the figure says that the suggested retail price is $9.99 - so it turns out that Target has gotten greedy and tacked on another $3?

Does anyone have a DPCI number for this thing or is it under the same number as Lava Vader....

This would make sense then why Target has on their planogram the space for an exclusive figure at $12.99 price point.

I sure as heck hope there are more of these then there are of the Lava Vaders!

Okay, I'm upset.  My understanding is that the markings of this clone are just stage markings, that is a regular grunt clone trooper on a particular planet during the clone wars.  Kinda like blue special ops during the temple raid, yellow markings on Felucia with Aayla and with Obi-Wan's attack on Grievous, green markings on Kashyyyk etc etc.  Why are they charging 12.99 for this figure?

Let me tell you something...I will paint my own clone #6's before I ever pay $13 plus tax for each clone with some stupid paint markings on it.  I can paint those things every bit as well.

I am pissed off.

This is beginning to remind me of the reasons why I stopped collecting baseball cards.  I was a diehard from '86 to '93.  Packs of 15 cards were 50 cents.  Then came the gold foil cards, and Topps Stadium Club cards for $4/pack.  Exclusives.  Random pack-ins.

Now why, on God's green earth, would an army builder figure, be made an exclusive, and retail for $13 plus tax?  This is a figure that we're supposed to be able to buy a bunch of, as I'm sure this clone with these particular planet markings are seen in bunches in the film.

This is going to help ruin the hobby.

Did anyone notice the lack of Clone #41 in the line up at the Hasbro displays? Very disturbing.

THIRTEEN BUCKS FOR TWO RED DOTS!?

Hey Target! how about dinner and a movie before you bend me over and screw me!!!! Keep your overpriced garbage you dirty bastards!

If people keep supporting these kinds of rediculous pricing practices, they'll keep doing it, bottom line! Let the damn things pegwarm and you'll get it for the price of a regular figure. The way it should have been all along.

I really wish Hasbro would do soemthing about this.

As much as I wish that would happen, it won't, because Hasbro doesn't care.  They see their involvement with the product as ending when it leaves their doors and although they will spin things to sound as if they care what their consumers think, they couldn't care less.

Hasbro sees money for the Clones regardless of whether or not we are able to find them.  Target probably had to order a lot of product in return for getting these exclusives, and as long as they make money on them, Target couldn't care less about who gets them.  One person buying 12 figures at 13 dollars a pop is the same thing as 12 people buying one figure each to them.  Unless they're under tight restrictions on what they can and can't do (such as the Lava Vader), Target is going to do whatever makes Target the quickest amount of money.

With Hasbro basically saying at the Convention (if I read this right) that the Clone is "out now" and is not subject to the same type of rules and regulations that applied to the Vader, it's just given people, be they Target managers/employees, scalpers and Ebay speculators, or even a so-called collector whose world will end if he does not obtain all 12 for his personal collection the license to more or less do whatever they want.  The thing is though that, like I said before, Hasbro doesn't care.

I don't know if anyone else has been around long enough to remember the complete disaster that was the 12" Hoth Luke and Wampa set that Target had as an exclusive.  Target basically let people buy multiples of the set and left a lot of people empty handed.  Scalping was rampant on the piece and still Hasbro (Kenner at the time) refused to make more of the set until LFL stepped in and said "Everyone who wants one will get one" and pretty much ordered Hasbro to make more.

I have a feeling that unless LFL (who in all honesty have much more important things on their plate right now than making sure we can all get a Clone Trooper figure) steps in, this kind of thing is going to continue.

Hey, while we're at it, let's do like I suggested in another thread (was it this one?) and make 12 different Clones and release one per month as a Target exclusive so we don't even have to stand up after they've finished reaming us.   ::)

YES!!!

But, it's FOUR red dots.  One on the helmet, one on the chest, one on the right arm, and one on the right leg.

I should know, I bought the visual dictionary, some red paint, and I'm painting them right now.  I have 55 clone #6's now, picked up 7 more today.

I noticed that tag from the C3 pic saif "MSRP $9.99"

Nice to see Target bending us over on that one.

I was beginning to reconsider my retirement, but since this **** continues, I'll be glad to leave it behind.

Trust me, Ben, I'm very close to quitting myself after all this stuff they have been pulling this year.  It's fairly obvious that Hasbro and retail are doing all they can to kill this line, either intentionally or tangentially, and even the Hasbro yay-sayers cannot dispute the fact that the pricing and availability issues are becoming a real problem.

The simple fact that someone was able to put up an entire case of the Clones on Ebay says more about this issue than I could ever hope to.  And what will Hasbro do about it?  The same thing they always do, nothing.  Can't find it?  Not our fault.

If something is out in abundance to a point where nothing new can be found, Hasbro blames retail for overordering.  If nobody can find anything because the pegs are empty, Hasbro blames retail for not supporting the line due to underordering.  They continue to give exclusives (albeit uninteresting ones) to stores like KayBee and K-Mart who are both on their last legs, crappy ones to Wal-Mart that sit on the shelves for months and months, and Target, the most clearance driven retailer gets one exclusive after another without making them widely available to the people who want them.

If I could find some way to sell everything in one fell swoop, I'd clean out every non-Unleashed and plush Hasbro item in my collection.  I'm just so sick of toy collecting (and sick in general, which I'm sure isn't helping matters) that I'd love to wash my hands of it all.  But that won't ever happen because there are too many people out there who feel the way that I do (you among them, Ben) to be willing to pony up the kind of money for such a collection.

And again, I'm a complete hypocrite because I keep saying, "Well I've come this far so I might as well finish."  But it's getting harder and harder to use that justification these days.

I've decided to pass on this. I bought the VOTC STormies, and those overpriced EE Clone packs, but I had a good reason to buy them. This one, I can just add the dots to one of my Clones I already have.

I also agree that this exclusive **** is getting out of hand. It seems that almost every figure is an exclusive. This just in Hasbro (and all other toy lines, too) - not everything HAS to be exclusive!

I went to Target tonight to get some steaks (grilling in 40 mph winds--fun!) and I stopped by the ROTS display to see if I could locate this thing since I'm a glutton for punishment.

Well, I didn't find them, but I did find a Obi-Wan w/ cup, so I got all pissed off over those again. So I just bought #3 Yoda since I didn't have it yet.

**** exclusives. I'm going to be so sick of this **** by the time the flick comes out. I bet my enjoyment of the movie might be slightly tempered by all this ****.

Can anyone confirm that the DPCI number from the first page of this thread is accurate: 087-06-1489 - I need that to start digging at my local Targets - they will most likely let it rot in the back until the employees have had plenty of time to dig through the cases.

So tomorrow morning, I'm going to try that DPCI # and see if they have any in stock. This is something to remember at ALL Target stores.

Target has a policy on bringing stuff out - it basically says that (a) they can not search for specific stuff and (b) they can not bring stuff out that is already well stocked.

Here are some ways around it though, and I know this is dirty pool, but Target is really starting to piss me off again...

1) Collect figures on pegs until there are a couple of pegs completely empty of either Collection 1 or 2 figures. If you have a Target with a price scanner that will indicate what's in stock - check before you start doing this, there's no point in freeing up a peg or two of C2 figures if they only have more C1 in stock.

After you've freed up some pegs, find the nearest assistance phone and press one - this will make a "Target Team Member" come running. When they get there, take them to where you have just made empty pegs and ask them to fill the empty pegs. They will do it! If you want to be EXTRA bold, ask them to stock it from the most recent location - each location has a date attached to it referring to when it came into the store - just politely ask them to pull from that location and you might hit pay-dirt.

2) This will only work if your Targets have a price scanner that allows you to punch in numbers. Go to the scanner and start punching in the numbers of stuff that isn't on the shelves. Things like the exclusive clone (087-06-1489) or the Mustafar playset (087-06-1334). If the item shows up as in stock. You can again, call on a customer service phone and then give them the DPCI number and explain to them that NONE of that variety/item is on the shelves. I would say that 9 times out of 10, they will go get it for you.

I used this method to buy the Deluxe figures and the Mid-size vehicles early.

Like I said, I know that it's dirty pool, but I still fail to understand why it is that Target is like they are regarding bringing stuff out. They have categorized Star Wars figures in the same group as Hot Wheels - this is something I find completely ridiculous. All of my Target stores have a "limit number of purchase per person" sign up, but I have yet to see anyone get turned away if they wanted to buy 10 figures.

Out of all of the chains, Target is also the place where I've run into the most unreasonable or jerkish deputy managers who are responsible for the area that includes Toys. When I see things like entire cases of these clones on eBay, I can't help but wonder why these guys seem to guard the product like it's gold that I'm trying to steal. The only reason I can figure is that they have an agreement with some local comic book shop guy who buys stuff from them directly from the back and gives them a kick-back for holding the stuff for them.

Ok well I got one  ;D I called up Target again today. Yesterday's response was we will not be putting them out until May 19th. Today I called got a girl who was nice enough to check the computer for me and said they had 1 case in the back. So i ran over to target and found some guy who looked like he had no idea was going on and gave him the DCPI # 087-061-489. He said they had them went in the back and after about 15 min. cam back with on ein his hand. I said thank you, avoided any managers I saw, and bought the figure. It was 12.99. Very cool indeed!

The thing that chaps my ass the most here is the fact that Hasbro does nothing, NUH-THING, to look out for those who are most loyal to their product when chains like Target insist on screwing us so badly without so much as the common courtesy of lubrication. My God, we throw money hand over fist at these people and this is the thanks we get?

What's more, with a MSRP of $9.99, the Measel Clone was clearly meant for collectors! Are we supposed to look at this as a favor or something??? Why couldn't this just be a simple variation like everything else now days? Damn, they're just dots! And not even seven or eight dollars worth of red dots at that!!!
Not sure what I expected though considering they're in it to make money, not friends. Still, what a slap to the face. What a let-down.  ::)
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?

It's that last cash-grab before the end. The retailers likely won't support this line post-ROTS (unless the TV show starts sometime in 2006) so they're just screwing people over before not bothering to carry Star Wars anymore.

And Hasbro wants to sell stuff. If Target came to you and asked for an exclusive, and they want to buy X amount of stuff if you give them that exclusive(s), does you think you would say no?

Sucks for us, but to any corporation, people are cattle.

Sucks for us, but to any corporation, people are cattle.

Worse than cattle, we're all just numbers to them.  At least with cattle they can sell the meat for various products, get milk from them, etc; with numbers, the only thing that we represent is leverage for corporations to line their own wallets.  They operate under the guise of actually caring what their customers think, but in the end scheme of things, their basic philosophy is "if you don't like it, go somewhere else."  Except for Wal-Mart, whose philosophy is, "if you don't like it, too bad, because we ran all the other people out of business and you have nowhere else to go."

But I digress.

The thing that gets me is that retail is leading Hasbro to believe that there is a future for SW toys.  To retail, Star Wars is only really profitable in a movie year or with something huge attached to the movies (e.g. the DVD box sets) to tie toy sales to.  When January 2006 hits and ROTS is just another DVD in the movie section, SW will be back to its now all too familiar four pegs for basic figures at WM, Target, and K-Mart (if they are even still around by then).  The majority of the ROTS figures will be hanging in the clearance aisle for 2 bucks a pop, and Hasbro will be citing disappointing sales for everything they did in 2005.  They will scale back SW production until a lot of the items they probably have planned for 2006 won't even see production on a large scale, retail will have been burned for the third time in six years by a massive product rollout and won't order enough, and a combined low production with low ordering will equal collecting nightmares.

The SW toy line, in non-movie years, is pretty much seen as the redheaded stepchild of the toy aisle.  If you look at any WM during a non-film year, SW has the smallest section of pegs allotted to it of any toy line in the boys' action figure aisle.  90 percent of the time the only thing that I ever saw in the SW section last year (OTC included) were lightsabers in both electronic and basic varieties.  Some will say that it's because the OTC sold so well and they flew off the shelves, but even if that is the case, empty pegs are poison for retailers.  If there's nothing there, they can't make money, and wouldn't logic dictate that they restock them constantly?

The problem with that is that retail doesn't want to order a lot of SW stuff because while the stuff sells well in the short run, in the long run, it's a disaster.  Most collectors will get their 1 or 2 of each figure and that's that.  You might get some kids or random adults buying something, but it's a real rarity in this day and age of video games and a lack of imagination.  When there isn't a movie to tie into the toys, kids aren't going to be interested, and even then their interest is dubious.

Television show or not (and let me commit heresy by saying a live action television show fills me more with dread than it does anticipation), SW is dying a slow death at retail.  Target can charge 13 dollars for an action figure all they want, since they know this is their last chance.  It's like the elephant in the room these days, and retail knows it.  Once ROTS has run its course, retail will turn its backs, and Hasbro will be caught with their pants down because they'll keep churning out the same old thing, again and again and again, and what retail didn't kill of the line will be put out of its misery by Hasbro.

And once again, we will be blamed because we just didn't buy enough of those Force Battlers to keep the line afloat.

And to keep this even remotely on topic (says the man that just went on a tirade that is even more pessimistic than I usually go on), I looked at Ebay this morning to see how out of control the Clone Trooper auctions were.  At around 10 AM there were 70 or so auctions and none of them that had been active for more than a few hours were below 30 dollars for a single figure.  And in a lot of cases, the sellers were offering multiple figures, even full cases of the figures.

But the SW line isn't dying, Hasbro has the license until 2018 or something like that.  Just pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Now take this for what it is worth everyone.  At C3 the Hasbro rep girl told my friend and I that these Clones are to be released on MAY 5TH.  She did admit that certain stores are going to mess up and put them out early as is the case with all the other exclusives.  She kind of laughed because that's what happens.

The lady was really nice and pleasant but as far as her really knowing that was the date...well... that was what she said.  Who knows if she really knew or not? But that is another possibility.  Yes, $12.99 but she said it would just be on the pegs.  No getting a ticket or any of that other stuff with the Lava Vader.

I bought Holo Yoda, passed on the Lava and C3 Vaders and EE clone packs. But I really want this clone, even though $13 is ridiculous. I'm glad it's a regular release and not a Lava Vader type stunt.

And for the record ... it's not just red dots, they're split ovals with white circles.

As far as stock and the ability to help their customers, Target wins hands down. As far as the employees go, your choices are non-existent (WalMart) and a mixed bag (Target).

It seems to me in all of my years of collecting and hitting both of these chains for stuff that WalMart employees are just not even interested in helping a customer - for ANYTHING. Did you know that WalMart has the same inventory control scanning guns that Target does? The only difference is that WalMart employees don't want to help you, period - no matter what you are trying to buy.

With Target at least, they have a good turn-over of product, never seem to over-order on any one assortment and if you're lucky you'll run into an employee who is at least going to TRY to help you.

If you go into Target and basically turn the situation to your favor then Target's own policy dictates that they have to help you. Looking for Collection 2 figures, clear three pegs that have the tag for Collection 2 and then ask for them to fill the pegs. You get around any sign they have posted because you are asking them to replenish shelf-space with product they have in stock.

If you can't free up some pegs then, well, you're out of luck. It's unfortunate, but I can also see Target's point in not wanting to have too much product on the floor to the point where the aisle becomes a mess either. This is also WalMart's biggest problem - the stores usually look like BOMBS have just gone off, where as Target stores are typically tidy and well organized.

I too am a bit disappointed that this SA Clone Paint-op variant is an exclusive. I can see this one being harder to get than the Lava Vader for a couple of reasons:

1) There is no set street date for the item - with Lava Vader it was the morning of April 2nd and you got a ticket. For this figure it's up in the air when it will hit the pegs (if at all in some areas based on eBay auctions).

2) Army builders, army builders, army builders. While I don't mind them as a collector sub-set, I'm guilty of the same thing Chewie is - right now I'm thinking that I want to pick up at least FIVE of these - one to keep MOC and the other four to open to add to my ever growing ROTS clone army. I just hope that 50,000 wasn't the order quantity of these, otherwise, we're screwed.
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?

Not sure what it is like in other areas.  However, the Target here seems to be the only retailer in the area wise enough not to buy 6000 cases of the same figures.  Thus, they actually look like they need to restock their shelves.  Unless they have just been lazy about doing it?

TRU already has ROTS in a huge bin.  Plus the front of the store and the regular section in the back is full of the same initial waves of figures.

Wal-mart is kind of in between Target and TRU's stock.

Well - I went to the Target store in Brick, NJ armed with the DPCI number.

First I punched it into the price scanner and it told me that they did have the item in stock.

Next I called on the phone and asked for help.

When the person came, at first they weren't going to help - I pointed to the pegs where the Lava Vader is supposed to be and told her that the 12.99 clone trooper is supposed to go there. She started to argue with me because the Target employees had placed regular figures on those same pegs.

After a bit back and forth, she called over a manager who made her punch the Clone Trooper DPCI number into her gun and then told her to go pull a case from that location.

When she finally came back with the case, they were seemingly quiet. One of the employees I was dealing with had once told me that employees are not allowed to open cases in the back -- well the case they brought out HAD been opened AND there were only four clones still in it!

So I said to the manager and the other employee, "Oh gee, look at that, the case has already been pilfered by employees in the back - what a shock!" At this point, they wouldn't even look me in the eye 'cause they knew I was right.

Why does everything involving Target have to feel like going into a court and pleeding your case like a lawyer?

I went to Target yesterday to look for a Clone Commando, instead I found the Target Exclusive Clone Trooper. He's an SA Clone with a pistol and rifle. He has red marks on his chest, head, and bicep. He's set in a ROTS mold VOTC styled case. Cut and dry.

$10...

Why did I buy it? Cause I'd never heard of this thing before, and it was the only one on shelves. And also because, hell, I paid $12 for the TRU Holographic Yoda earlier yesterday.

Despite the price, I'd actually like to pick up one of these too.  If they are indeed $12.99 (as it sounds), one will be enough, I can't army build at that price.  I really like the figure, but it sounds like it could be a pain to find/pick up....hopefully I'm wrong.  I checked both of our Targets this weekend, and neither had them.  Only one of them has a DCPI scanner, but I forgot to go punch in the number since we were in a bit of a hurry.  Oh well, doubtful they had it anyways, this particular Target is often a bit slower with the releases.  I've seen conflicting reports of the release date, with either May 5 or May 8 being the most common.  I'd almost rather it be the 5th in some ways, but we'll have to see.  I could see that possibly being the day, because I think the ROTS video game is released that day?

As far as Target vs. Wal-Mart...there are points both ways.  I usually prefer Target, although they are often a little higher price-wise.  My wife and I just enjoy shopping at Target overall better, so it is a better experience I guess.  Wal-mart always ends up frustrating me, especially if you go to pick up groceries.  It really is rarely possible to have a "quick trip" to Wal-Mart, regardless of what you are getting.  I've also seen the same problems others have mentioned here, Wal-Mart (particularly the toy section) is a warzone.  Figures strewn everywhere, floor, shelves, etc.  They are overstocked, which makes me worry about seeing later figures.  Target is overall much more organized and don't seem to go crazy with the initial releases.  They are also good about clearances it seems, which is good too.  However, Wal-Mart is a fair amount closer to home, so it is often more convenient to go check out the stock...so that helps some.  Also, that particular Wal-mart lowered their prices to $4.98, so that is good too.  Target is at $5.24.  Toys R Us, on the other hand, rarely gets any business from me.  They are always later getting things in, and seem to always be higher priced.  They are swimming in the first 24-32 figures, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.  Last time TRU got much business from me was for the VOTC line, they seemed to be pretty timely with the first two waves of that....and the ROTJ one showed up MUCH later.  Anyways...back to topic....I do like the Clonetrooper figure, but the price and availability is going to be a pain.  I hope to find just one, that would be enough for me.

Ok - so I just opened one at work - this figure doesn't have any socket or plug-hole for an attena to be attached to so this isn't exactly figure #41 with a different paint-op.

The figure comes with a pistol and a rifle and is articulated with ball joints at the shoulders, elbows, ankles and knees. Unfortunately the hips are the standard pivot joint - I would have LOVED it if this figure had the hips of the AT-TE Tank Gunner.

As people have already noted the red half-circles symbol is painted on the chest, the helmet, the right upper-arm and the right thigh.

Is this figure a great army builder? YES! But I'm sure you all already knew that. Which makes the price tag and exclusiveness of this piece all that more annoying.

The packaging is the same as the Lava Vader except for the following:
1) The star-case outer shell is made of sturdier plastic.
2) The star-case has a J-Hook instead of a hole to be punched out
3) The backer card that is behind the figure is printed on thicker cardstock then was used for the Lava Vader.

Of course multiples of this would be great but I'm gonna be happy with one at this point I think, and just hope for a basic release of this scheme some day...

Anyone finds an extra (*cough*Matt*cough*) by all means I'll take one.

Rob, was it under the Vader DCPI number still, at $12.99, or what?

It was 12.99 - so I'm assuming that it was in the computer as the Vader.  I figured I'd just grab it and if at some point they lower the price to 9.99 I'll explain what happened at Customer Service and get my 7 bucks back.

I should add this.

The guy at the first Target didn't have any, so he printed us out a list of nearby targets that did have them in the computer.  I live in the middle of Dallas, around a lot of Targets - and the nearest one that had them was 11.7 miles away.  Of the 10 or so stores on the list, one of them had 24 Clones - the rest all had 12 or less.

Paul told me that the one he went to this morning over in Fort Worth only had 3.  I have no idea if there are more shipping or not, but I'm guessing this one will be a pretty limited run.  If I were you guys and you haven't yet - I'd go ahead and take that SKU into your local Target just to be safe.  If they don't have any, they can probably tell you which store you can find one at.

No, it is NOT the same after all...

087-06-0311 = Lava Vader

087-06-1489 = Exclusive Clone

087-06-1490 = 5-pack of Collector Cases

My info says that Target is set for an aisle re-set on or near May 8th.  At that re-set time, they will have pegs clearly marked for these, so keep an eye out for your Target to reset the shelves and out these out...

A guy was walking AROUND at C3 with one, actually.

Jeff and I were gawking at the Hasbro booth and looking at their sample when a guy walked right up with a carded one in his hands...  Said a guy had 3 and sold him one in the exhibitor hall.

I gotta say I'm pretty shocked that most of you have actually given in to this and paid 12.99 plus tax for a $5 and change figure, when it is such an easy custom.  I'm really disappointed in how ready and willing you guys were to bend over and take it in the poop chute sans the lube.  You really got ripped off huge.  And worse yet, with the way collectors have basically gobbled all of these things up like crack, like 2 weeks before the release date, Target knows they can get 12.99, or 14.99, or basically, anything they WANT for a $5 figure; and rest assured, they will in the future, and most of you will still be willing to get ripped off.  These things should be sitting on pegs collecting dust, for months, and finally be clearanced for the price of a regular figure, since, it is a regular figure.

Here's what we have so far:

Boba Fett 300 ---> EE Exclusive AOTC Clone 4 pack ---> Target Exclusive SA clone ----> ?

Don't get me wrong, usually I pass on this stuff--EE four-pack, Lava Vader, CIII Vader, Early Bird, and all of the silver figures (admittedly I woulda got the Clone and Sandtrooper if I'd had the chance, but they're way too pricey on the secondary market). Although I do like my Holo Yoda.

Yet I'm a sucker for clones of every stripe (pun intentional) so I think I can splurge this one time.

I'd much rather get bent over at Retail than on the Ebay Scale.  Besides, its a super articulated army builder...I once stated that if they would make them (back in the VOTC Stormtrooper days) I would buy them.  I am really just keeping my word.... ;)

If it was a $13 Jedi or Action Feature or Holo figure, I'd skip em and just snag some for buddies, but they have finally made an exclusive that I want and will open and will army build.

LOL!  It really is an exercise in getting bent over.  I found about 20 of them today and bought 8.  At least a couple for me, and the rest for some friends.  The $100 + that it cost hurt a little bit, especially since I can get 8 basic Clone Troopers for under $50.

I was reading the TNI/ADC boards, and some guys mention that they've picked up X amount of these, and these people were badmouthing Star Wars figures a few months ago.

Was at the Upland Target when I ran into (I can't remember his name so I'll name him) tall redhead guy from the night I met you at Rancho Walmart. He was gonna use the DCPI number but I told him that it came up itemnot found. Then he proceed to tell me that a guy he knows has been going around using the DCPI to get every single Clone from the local Targets. Said he had 100 of them. I asked him why does he have so many when I knew the answer. eBay and Frank and Sons(local scalper show).

"It's 1978, and your stormtrooper figure is chasing your Princess Leia figure...Except it doesn't look like he's running, it looks like he's doing "The Robot." Announcing the Target Exclusive super-articulated clone trooper..."

I thought this was a kids' line ;).  I don't know of too many "kids" who were playing with action figures in 1978 :P.

At least it looks like this figure is not limited. If it continues to sell well, it's always possible Target can order more.

As for the guy picking up 100 of them, I'll be curious if he actually sells them all. I know there are lots of people who will buy them on ebay, but it will reach a saturation point. Who knows, in three months he may have to return a good portion.

I found 8 yesterday, bought 2, and from the local store reports found out they were all gone in less than 2 hours. Same story at other stores, someone bought one in the morning, and then they were all gone by the time other people got there. I'm always the first to question the scalper scapegoat angle, but this is looking suspicious. The people in our local group know pretty well the buying patterns around town, and these places don't normally sell out of new figures right away, especially these overpriced ones.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting the $12.99 price either. I was thinking $9.99 or something, so, that wasn't so much fun. I don't think I can afford my second one - it'll go to another local who missed out. Though I was thinking these things would be hanging out for a while.

Based on a huge tip from Jared, I was able to nab my Target Clones last night.  Totally MOMC too, with what appears to be a much nicer/sturdier "starcase" than the one that came with the Lava Vader a few weeks ago.  No bent peg hooks on the top of the card either.  Much better.  In their system under the correct new Clone DCPI #, and at $12.99 again.

Very relieved to get that one out of the way, as I think it's gonna be a bitch to track it down, since it's not only an exclusive, but it's an army builder that's going to be in huge demand.  Likely not going to be a figure that folks just grab their usual one or two of...  :-\

Post by: Jesse James on April 26, 2005, 04:49 PM
What a bunch of A-holes at Target...  My god.  One of my worst retail experiences with low-level employees I do believe.

So I took the # and called a couple "local" (I'm talking like 45 mins away though) Targets and at the first one I got a nice guy who was helpful.  Great.

Second Target I called the guy was like "We don't have that", I told him I have the DPCI # and asked if he could just check it.  He told me, "We don't carry that".  I told him to then just check the #, I know he's capable of it, and I didn't wanna make a 1 hour trip to his store for nothing.  He said, "OK, what is it", and I read it, and he just said, "Yeah, there's none of those here, goodbye".

So I went to the first Target...  After haggling with an employee about what it was, telling him there's none on the pegs and asking if he could go in the back (I used the, "The guy I talked to told me to make the trip down and someone could help me" line), the guy went in the back finally and brought one out.  At that point, another employee and the one who brought me the figure both started asking me, "is this valuable?" type questions.  I told them it isn't, and that if they make a lot it won't ever be...  It may have an initial "push" but that's it.  I tried to avoid any army builder potential topics or anything, and just get their minds off their wallets and to just not screw everyone in that Targets area.   ::)

So from there, I left with my one Clone (which the one guy I think didn't want to sell it to me because he I could see the steam coming from his ears as he thought about buying what he could and selling them).  I went down the highway then to the next Target to form a sorta triangle toyrun.  There's a highway from that one that'd run right back to my house (a 45 min drive from that Target to home though, and from the first Target to the next was easily 45 mins as well).  I get there, and this is the store that the ******bag told me "we don't have that", and low and behold they're in stock.  If I could've had that $5.15/hr yutz in front of me I'd have kicked him in the nuts at that point.

I asked a girl for help, she gave me the "We can't bring 'Collectibles' out for you" line.  I told her it's a toy, she said no.  I told her it's for my kid.  She said no.  I left.

On the way out I popped off at Customer Service to try them.  It worked and after much searching they found me one and brought it out.  What a fiasco though.

I like Target...  I like it more than Wal-Mart as far as stores go simply because it's always less "hectic" feeling, aisles are bigger, and it's a generally cleaner store (Some WM's are very clean/nice though).  That's important stuff to me.  If there's one constant in the retail universe though, it's that people from the ground up often just don't care.  I worked management for J.C. Penney's, and it's no different.  I guess that's the price you pay for "sales" and "price cuts" and the like.  Poor quality in service.  I will say some people were very nice today, but only 1/4 of the people I talked to were while easily the majority were rude and couldn't have acted more "bothered".

That's just my little retail rant.  Usually I give them the benefit of the doubt but today was frustrating trying to just get some simple help on something to save me some time.  Given how much I support Target over WM, they owed me more than what I got.

Jesse - it's like you were telling my story all over again.

The boom of eBay has changed everything and while I don't mind eBay per se, I do hate what it has done to the toy collecting industry.

It has become easy for Target/WalMart/TRU employees to subsidise their income by selling the "hot" toys on eBay. Stores say they don't let employees open up cases of stuff in the stock room - but they do! Just look at my story - when I finally convinced them to bring some Clones out, they brought me an open case with only four of the Clones left. What the heck happened there?

The only logical conclusion can be that a Target employee saw the case, opened it up and bought a bunch of them for sale on eBay. The only reason why there was a case left at all is because I think to have taken the entire case it would have meant that he/she would have actually had to check it out of inventory which means their activity would be traceable.

The important thing to remember is that Target's policy stands - if they have an item in stock and there is a place to put that product on the shelves (oh and for the $13 clone, the Lava Vader is THE spot - no more Lava Vaders are coming), the employees are REQUIRED to bring out the merchandise to you, regardless of what store-printed signs exist, what kind of assine department managers you run into and especially regardless of whether or not they think you are a collector, scalper or parent shopping for a kid.

I'm sure some of you have already read the story, but I actually got a department manager fired at Target around XMas time because he wouldn't re-stock the transformers pegs. He started mouthing off to me about being a scalper and that I couldn't possibly have a son at my age, etc.... That dick was never seen or heard from since and to be honest, this is the only store where I'm a jerk - cause when an employee in there starts to give me a hard time I just go - "Did you know Dan, the manager who got fired?" and I just grin when they respond "Yes", cause my immediate response is "well I'm the guy who got him fired after he gave me a hard time" - you should see how fast their toon changes.

I hate being a jerk like that sometimes, but what I hate more is being a slave to Target's lazy or dishonest employees.
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?

We got lucky - we went to the closest Target and the employee was so unbelieveably helpful I thought I'd stepped into Bizzaro-Target.  He didn't have them, but printed out a list of all the stores in the area that did and gave me the quantities each store had.   The people at the nearest one were also very helpful and brought us out 3 - the number we requested without any fuss whatsoever.

And like I said - 1 store on a list of 10 or 15 stores had 24, all the others had 12 or less in their inventory.

I wish I'd had similar good experiences Rob...  Most of the time I'm cool at Target.  It is a good store, but today was  just that time that I NEEDED help and was given the run-around a lot.

Plus Target's a rarity around here.  Only near malls and they're all spaced rather far apart.  Tough making a toy run like that.  :(

I got what I went for though, as they're due on my finals week.  Blech. :(

I grew up in an area that was pretty much Wal-Mart country (there were four within an hour's drive and absolutely nothing else; not even a K-Mart to be seen) so my main exposure to Target had been random trips out of town on holidays.  I have never met an actual nice Wal-Mart toy section employee (and arguably few nice ones in the rest of the store for that matter) and most of the time they seem to be saying things just to spite you.

When I finally moved to an area with more retail outlets, I found Target to be a refreshing change of pace from the apathetic and perpetually angry WM employees.  Sure, you still run into some employees there (as with any store) that make it their mission to be an *******, but by and large (at least here), Target employees are helpful or at the very least professional with me.

Right now the SW section at Target is pretty packed where I am, but there are gaps where certain things could be stocked (namely the ARC-170 and Gunship, the 12" dolls, and the four pegs alotted for Lava Vader), but Target has literally only restocked twice since April 2nd and that was to put out a case of AT-RTs last week and more Unleashed earlier this week.

That being said, I've learned when it's pretty much futile to ask employees about anything.  The guy I spoke to yesterday (that I think I mentioned in this thread) was very polite and CB'd the stockroom right in front of me, reading the UPC thing for the Deluxe figures to see if they had any more in the back (they didn't), but I didn't want to pressure him by asking about the Clones after that, especially since I didn't have that UPC on me.

What it comes down to is this: Target employees probably make a few cents more than Wal-Mart, but not enough to actually care about the customers.  They want to go in, do their job as well as they have to, and go home without any hassles.  While there are supposed to be policies in place at retailers to keep employees from buying anything while they're on the clock, there is nothing that keeps them from having a friend going off the clock set aside the stuff they want in the back so they can buy it later.  They're making 5 bucks and change an hour, so in their minds, if they can buy something and make a killing on Ebay, why the hell not?

I'm not saying it's right (in my perfect world where I am the ruler of the universe and the DeLaurentis girl on the Food Network is my...ummm..."consort for life", these problems would not exist as there would be solid case packs of Clone Troopers in various uniforms and accessories and none of them would be over 6 bucks for any reason), but sometimes, disturbing though it may be, it is beneficial to see things from their perspective in order to understand things a little better.

I would like to say though that any Target employee who is rude to customers about this and/or takes the figures and sells them on Ebay before they even hit the floor deserves to be beaten with a sack full of doorknobs.*

*Here's the sack, but you have to supply your own doorknobs.

I knew someone around here would start to use their brain eventually.  Out of all of the different legions of clones with different colors and patterns on their armor, this one is the easiest.  I've already customized 4 special ops, 4 red shock troopers, 3 of these "Target Exclusive" Neyo grunts, and Commander Bly from Felucia out of the 50 someodd clone #6's I've picked up so far.  I will do the same with the SA clone when it comes out for $5.  It is really disheartening to see so many of you willing to get bent over the star wars display by Target.  NO $5 figure should be sold for $14 (tax included) at retail.  No excuse.  Scalper prices at retail, and most of you are fine with it.  Go fig.

So I can have different clones by paying for them or by wishing for them.    I chose the former since doing the latter hasn't won me the Lotto yet either.

That's fine and good, but just know it was $10 for an exclusive EE clone, $13 plus tax for an exclusive Target clone, and next time it will be $15 plus, and you are responsible for making it all happen.  Had we all stuck together and left this ridiculously priced figure on the shelf to collect dust, I assure you, there would be no more 12.99 plus tax exclusives.  You flush $8 down the toilet with each figure you buy.

But who would've actually, honestly, ever thought that a "solidarity" movement of telling the retailers "F off" by not buying would EVER happen?

Are army builders at fault...  Partly.  But so are people who need one of every one, or whatever...  It's nothing that Paul or any of us can stop by simply saying "I'm not gonna buy that".  It'd take the vast majority of people in this hobby agreeing.

I haven't seen 20 people agree, much less 2000, or 20,000, or whatever.  :)  I guess my point is, it's unrealistic to point fingers and say "this is your fault", because in reality it's everyone's fault in this hobby.

I am not wild about the price, but then again this isn't something I'm gonna get a huge army of (I'll be lucky to get a couple).  Even if this figure were available in DROVES I wouldn't buy 30 of them or whatever, I'd buy as many as I felt was financially "good" for me.  If I'm lucky I'll be able to do that now actually.

The cost of both the Clone at Target and the 4-pack sucks...  I could buy more of the 4-pack if I actually wanted but I'm voicing my opinion by NOT doing so.  Sure I bought some, (same with the Stormtrooper, who I'd buy more just because I like the classics more, but also I got many for cheap or trade), and I'll buy some of this Target Clone, but I'm not buying 100...  Not to mention the Clones at EE are actually selling for $6-ish if you got cases.  EE's the one gouging on the $8 - $10 price by breaking up cases, either because they think they'll get stuck with the colored sets or they're just thinking it's a good way to make more by capitalizing on army builders...  My EE Clones were ALL $6.25 if I recall.  I just won't buy those individual sets.

The Target Clone sucks...  But if I don't buy them, I guarantee people aren't gonna line up behind me and say "Yeah, JJ said let's stop this insanity!"  :)  This hobby's very often an "every man for himself" thing, and retail knows that.

I'll agree to take SOLE responsibility for the $15 price tag if I can also have Sole credit for ensuring we get Super Articulated Army Builders in the future no matter what the price.

But I didn't buy any of the EE Clone 4 packs, since I don't collect EPII...so those will have to be the responsibility of someone else.

I'll fall on my sword for some things, but never for EPI or EPII. ;)

You flush $8 down the toilet with each figure you buy.

Perhaps this is the flaw in your logic.  You are actually flushing $5 down the drain for your $5 figures and I am flushing $13 down the drain for this one. These things are not investments, they are not currency, they are...TOYS..GASP!!!!  They have no bankable future value, they are only worth the amount of joy they give you while you possess them. I still would only have bought 12 of them if they were $5 figures too.

I'll leave the army building of these to the poor souls whose lives would not be complete without ten or more of them.

Is this a cheap imitation of the infamous "Get a Life"?.....ouch  ::)

If you guys don't want one, don't buy it, if you don't like the price don't buy it, but there is no reason to attempt to belittle people who do like the figure and are not upset enough with the price to throw a fit.

Maybe if we all got the figure and then went to the Cashier and held our breath till they sold it to us for $5....my mom can drop off, if somebody elses can pick up.

I for one don't buy Jedi (exclusive or not) or Aliens (exclusive or not), they are not my thing, Good Super Articulated Army builders are.  I feel no reason to apologize.

If it was a Super Articulated Well Sclupted "Prune Face" would the stance be different?

Dressel's right - sort of.

I don't think you're stupid if you want to army build these, but you must have more money than I!

Target and Hasbro are abusing the SW license just a little too much with these exclusives.

It's a $5.24 figure with a plastic clamshell and a few extra paint ops.  Nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah, I'll buy one just because I like to buy one each of the exclusives to keep carded - the rest of my figures are opened because they didn't cost me $13.

And BTW, 50K isn't limited....

The torso is completely different from the SA #41 clone too.  But from what I can tell the Arms and legs are shared with the SA.

Of the ones I have opened, the Torso of the Target Clone are VERY loose.  Almost ALL of them have this problem so far.  I got them at 4 different Targets or I would have thought I just got a bad group of them.  Of the VOTC Stormies that I have only 1 or 2 suffer from this problem and my sole #41 Clone is not loose in the Torso either.

I am going to take photos like I did with Commander/Gunner/ #6 of the Target and #41 Clone with more side by side comparisons (and Less Taun Taun  >:( )...

I've been reading some reports from suposed Target employees that all Targets will be getting two shipments of 12-24 per shipment, meaning that this could be limited like the Vader. Can someone please say that this is not so? Did anyone who attended C3 ask about this piece and whether or not it's limited?

I'd say that sounds about right.  Checking locally, those are about the numbers I've been hearing at Targets in the area with a few of the higher-volume stores getting slightly more perhaps.

That'd put it at about Lava Vader quantities...  Not surprising.  Target doesn't consider that demand on this may be higher.  That's not even a factor to them.

I hope that that's not true. The handled the Lava Vader perfectly: Here's how many there are, period. Here's the date they will be available, period. Here's how you get one, period. Surprising they would handle one so well, but the other poorly.

This is completely true.  I reiterate what I said earlier in this thread: wrong though it may be, one person buying all 12 figures is the same thing to Target as 12 people buying 1 figure.  They make the same amount of money, the shelves are still cleared (something Target is rabid about) for new product that will sell, and they have something they can use as clout for further negotiations with Hasbro.  If one of the stock people can buy them and sell them on Ebay as the "VHTF RARE HOT DISCONTINUED REVEGE OF TEH SITH CLONE TROPER" and get 50 bucks for his "investment" it matters not to Target.

As such I don't think I'll ever see one of these at retail and unless I happen across one or someone offers me a cheap one in a trade in the future, I'm not going to even go out of my way to get it.  I'd like one (two, but I'm not going to sweat that at all), but it won't kill me if I don't get it.  Other things do a good enough job at that.   :-[

You would think - but remember - of course they wanted to handle the Lava Vader well - it meant they got you to stop by Target on April 2nd.

I bought just as much stuff at Target (if not more) than the amount of stuff I bought at TRU the night before, let's see:

TRU:
Figures #1 - #24 (1 of each)
2x Holo Yoda
2x Deluxe Sidious
12" Ultimate Vader
12" Sidious & Clone
6x Small Vehicles (2x of AT-RT, Boga & Barc Speeder)
2x Battle Arenas (1 of the Mace/Sidious, 1 of the Anakin/Dooku)

Target:
Figures #1 - #24 (1 of each)
Figures #25 - #32 (2 of each)
1 Figure #37, 1 Figure #39
6x Target Exclusive Cups w/Figures (2 of each set)
4x Lava Vaders
2x ARC-170
12" Grevious

I may have forgotten some items, but that's most of it. I think money spending-wise it's pretty close.

So, to prove my point - by offering the Lava Vader as an exclusive incentive, Target got me to split my major purchases between TRU and Target something I hadn't done in either of the past two Midnight Madnesses - I had always gone 100% TRU.

Also - RE: finding this clone - just keep going into your store armed with the DPCI number. A Target employee told me this morning that she expects them in by Tuesday. But she only told me that because when I got to the aisle I was looking for Deluxe Figures - the pegs were empty except for a handful of Obi-Wans w/SBD - anyway before she scanned it she was like "Are you looking for the Target exclusive that's coming out Tuesday? I know we don't have that yet 'cause I just checked for another guy"

Post by: DoctorPadawan on April 28, 2005, 03:56 PM
Well, I just got back from the local Target where, armed with the DCPI number thingy, I decided to see if they had the Clones in stock since there weren't any on the shelves.  As seems to always be the case (thankfully), I found a really sweet and helpful Target sales associate who happily went into the back to see if they had any.  She emerged about two minutes later with a case of Clones that hadn't even been opened.  She asked me if there was a space for them on the pegs and I pointed out the four empty pegs for the Lava Vader (which she remembered) and she said, "That must be where they go then."  She opened the case and inside were 12 Clones, tissue paper and all.

She looked them over and said, "Are these supposed to be out yet?" and I told her that people across the country have been finding them but that I had no idea if there was an actual street date attached.  She seemed really nervous about selling one of them to me and I (yes, I did the right thing, and I believe in karma) told her that I would let her check as I did not want her to get into trouble just to sell me a toy.

She went into the back and came out about 10 minutes later with that ROTS handbook that Lord Philip of Assholia had up on RS before the Lava Vader launch and apologized profusely because it said to restrict the Clones until May 8th.  She kept telling me how sorry she was, and I told her that was fine with me and I double checked to make sure May 8th was the official date, and she said, yep, and opened the handbook to make absolutely sure.  I thanked her again for going to such an extraordinary effort for me and apologized for troubling her.

The good side of this is that, while waiting, I managed to get all four of the new Deluxe figures (Vader, Yoda, TF Droid, and the Jet Pack Clone), so my karma came back to me almost immediately. :)

It looks as if I'll have to go back to Target on May 8th and hope that between now and then the figures haven't magically disappeared from the back stock room in that time.  But, as for today, I really lucked out by finding yet another wonderful and helpful Target employee and was rewarded for it by getting four figures I didn't expect to find at all for at least three more months.

(and by the way, the Yoda on Can-Cell is AWESOME)

If you get denied, don't give up guys.  I got denied TWICE by two separate employees at the one Target, and on the way out stopped at Customer Service who were happy to help...

Try in the back area, then try an employee on the way out, and if you fail twice, try customer service.  You have nothing to lose on this, they're not gonna ban you from the store.  It's their job.

The item's in the computers, it's got a price (save receipts, as price could change May 5), and it's not marked as a "May 5th Only" kind of item (some ******bag I ran into tried that, but I countered him and he backed off that argument).

Make up excuses too, or use one you maybe have legitimately.  I called, and told them I was TOLD they were in stock and was TOLD to come down and get one off an employee as I have a long drive...  That was true 100% at one store, at the other store the employee lazily told me they didn't have any (when I got there, they did).  I did have to drive an hour to get to either store though, so that's partly true even at the 2nd store.

It implies you're not gonna be happy if you're told to hike on this one, and not gonna be coming back to their store...  I even went so far as to say, "I figured I'd do some shopping while I was here too, but I'll go to the WM close to home if I can't get anything..." kinda line.

This is one of those crappy things that's gonna take legwork if you want it.

BTW, the price blows and it is an incredible kick to collectors.  Fortunately competition keeps Target in line with pricing, but with an exclusive they know they have an upperhand.  Price blows any way you slice it though, no argument there.  It did on the Vader, Holo Yoda, and EB Kits as well if you ask me...  and C3 Vader.

Yeah, the price blows, but one's not gonna break me. I'd feel a lot stronger about this if I was an army builder, but I'm just kinda of a mini-army builder, and I just like the look of a few of the clones or stormies or whatever in a small group.

It doesn't really matter if these sell "a lot", I think, or if they sit on the shelf. The bread and butter of action figures are the base figures, and those prices haven't changed significantly in YEARS.  And all the time the quality has been improving. Exclusives are just the icing on the cake for retailers.  Its part of the contract with distribution, and something we're not gonna control either way if we don't buy this on the basis of priciple.

I suppose its coming out now in order to sell some before ALL the clones hit: the SA, the 3 pack army builder, and the EE cases.  Hasbro seems to be catering a little better to army builders with all of these upcoming choices, plus the plentiful numbers of Clone #6.

I do feel for completist or real army builders, because taken by itself this one is way overpriced, but down the road the whole pictures is looking pretty good.

Funny I got lucking and found this early.  I always assume that if I get it, everyone's already got one. I least I got an extra for an army building fiend.

I really like this figure and I plan to buy quite a few even at $12.99.  I don't think we'll see this same figure painted like this again so I'm willing to pay more because once these are gone the price will be a lot more than Target's retail price.

After thinking about it today, I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up empty handed on the Clone Trooper.  My conspiracy theory brain has been going off today about how the clerk probably asked someone about it and they said, "Don't sell them and I'll cut you in on the Ebay profits."

Oh well, it's not the end of the world.

I don't know about how they (OMGCNFO stands for "Oh My God Cheap New Figures Online", which makes the high price on the Clone a little ironic) operate now, but they initially started with the idea of doing what their company name implies.  They said that they bought directly from Hasbro and that they would not charge any more than going retail for the items they sold.  The drawback was that 90% of the people on the RS forums who were ordering from them (judging by the posts) expressed unhappiness with their shipping and packing methods, and did not order from them again.

I hadn't been to their site in a while (last summer, I think was the last time I saw it; I've never ordered from them personally and cannot/will not vouch or disparage them), but the only thing it succeeded in doing for them was making me never want to go there again, since three times in a row in two different browsers, the site made my browser crash.

As for how they got their hands on them, I don't think this is one of those situations where they can pull a "Brian's Toys Excuse" (you know, the "We got this from an overseas distributor" bull****, when the photos of the item have a Wal-Mart price sticker on the bubble), as this item was, from what I gather, made specifically for Target.

I'm not against a store having an exclusive figure, but to take a $5 figure and charge $13 for it is extortion.  I will not support a retail store that actually goes above and beyond the Hasbro MSRP of 9.99 for this figure (which was bad enough).  The worst thing is, this is an army builder.  I just put an end to any temptation to buy this figure by continuing to hunt clone #6's, and today I bought my 58th to 63rd  :D  Being a customizer ROCKS.  Target can keep their overpriced ****.

Looks like some Bozo on ebay is trying to sell #6 clones stuck in Target exclusive Clone packages as rare variations(  Item #5972479120 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5972479120) and #5972479085 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5972479085)).  The tip off is the markings above the belt are made up of dots like on the #6 instead of solid grey lines as on the Target clone. If I'm wrong, please correct me, but it sure looks like BS to me.
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?
Post by: Ben on May 1, 2005, 11:31 PM
Well, the large shoulder pads would indicate the #6 Clone, so it wouldn't surprise me if it is fraud.

This packaging would be quite easy to swap figures with, and with a little patience and a lot of gall, it could be done.

Or this is a genuine error. But two in a row that the same guy bought? I'm doubtful.

Speaking as a customizer, the packaging IS easier to pull a switch on sadly.  Hope nobody gets taken on a scam with these, that's BS...  Unfortunately it's the way of this hobby anymore.  Opportunists (scalpers, frauds, etc.) are always spiked during these movie years, but ROTS really seems to have a whole new breed of them, sadly.

So what is the dealio with the Target Clonetrooper now?  I've read some reports that Target stores are being told there are "no street dates"  on these, and they can be released.  I haven't seen a lot of people reporting they've found them lately....but maybe that's because many of you found them awhile ago already.  Some places were reporting a "release date" of tomorrow, some on Sunday, etc.  Our closest Target isn't exactly "close", so I hate to make several trips over there to keep checking :P.  Thought about heading out today after work, or possibly tomorrow, need to get the soundtrack anyways.  I only want to get one, but I'm afraid these are going to be tough to find.  Anyone know when they are going to be out, or is it just going to depend on the store most likely?
Title: Re: More Target Exclusives?
Post by: Pete_Fett on May 4, 2005, 12:00 PM
I don't know if this helps or not, but supposedly there is going to be a SW aisle reset/refresh for May 8th. I'm guessing it is something they planned on doing just to make sure that the aisle was still presentable come May 19th.

Perhaps this will also be the time when those three or four pegs that read "Lava Vader" will be changed to "SA Clonetrooper" (or similar)?

I personally am hoping that items that haven't been widely available yet will start to show up - like the Mustafar playset and Wave 2 of Unleashed.

Another possibility is to call your Target and give them the DPCI number (it's at the start of this thread) and ask them to see if they have any instock.

Post by: Jeff on May 4, 2005, 12:05 PM
Anyone know when they are going to be out, or is it just going to depend on the store most likely?

I think it totally depends on the store and your store manager...

The May 5th date was the "approximate availability date" that Hasbro quoted on the Clone's sign at C3.

The May 8th Date is the date that was quoted in the Target handbook:

Basically, Target is supposed to re-set their toy aisles for this weekend.  When the toy aisles are re-set, there will be pegs for the Clone Troopers in place of the pegs for the Lava Vaders (like Pete was saying).

Some stores are treating the "May 8th" date the way they treated the April 2nd date - they have an "official" Target handbook that says May 8th, so they are waiting until overnight May 7th to re-set the aisles.

Other stores though are treating the aisle re-set the same as they would any other re-set - it has to be done by May 8th, but can be done at any poin between now and then (within 1 week).  That is why some stores have already re-set and pepople are finding them on the shelves.

Like Pete said, your best course of action is to take the DPCI # (087-06-1489) and call Target and ask for Customer Service.  They can tell you if they have it and can hold it for you if they have them in the back and not on the floor yet.

Jeff

Nor have I seen the Clones on the shelf, but every store around here either has them in back or are already sold-out. Today, using the DPCI number, I had customer service check surrounding stores, and the inventory numbers ranged from as low as 1 to as many as 26.

I guess he's building an army, and that's fine and all... but damn, show some self control and leave some for others. At least for a little while.  At $12.99 you'd think he'd be happy with the 13 he'd got, and not be upset that the store wouldn't sell him both cases.

I feel like I've taken more than my share with 4, and I feel like I've spent too much money on those anyway. They're not worth the $13 bucks, that's for sure.

I've been on the verge of a rant about how rampant hoarding appears to be this movie year go-round. I've never seen so many speculators, johnny-come-latelies, scalpers, and compulsive hoarders vulturing the Star Wars goods. I was reading posts from people on another board about them ordering multiple Clone #41s from hasbrotoyshop.com, not in numbers like 10-12, but 40-50, and higher.

It's just out of control.

I've noticed a lot of that crap too. I frequent the TNI and Spawn boards, and a lot of those folk who a few months ago hated Hasbro and their Star Wars toys are now buying loads of Clones and multiples of anyone past #32.

While it's great that they're all here (maybe there won't be so much later on around clearance time), seeing stuff like that case of Clones just makes me sick.

But maybe when their fair-weather fandom ends us die-hards can buy these ready-made armies for much less than retail. :)

What did this dick-wad proceed to do? Hit the Star Wars aisle FIRST - not the Hot-Wheels, the Star Wars. He started grabbing Clone Pilots, Clone Commanders, and then started looking at the pegs of the Target Exclusive Clone.

If murder was legal - I would have choked him to death right there on the spot.

Advice to all: NEVER give a stranger who asks you "what figures are hard to find?" a valid answer - tell him/her that the hard-to-find figures are Bail Organa and Mon Mothma or something else.

The problem with the line for ROTS is that the Clones are the best of the batch AND the army builders so the Hot-Wheel dregs are going to grab as many as they can simply for eBay re-sale.

I have actually done this...  And it has worked.  And I did this very recently actually, and it did indeed work.  The guy walked away with a couple Jedi figures that weren't particularly plentiful but not hard to find anywhere by any stretch.

They didn't have anything I wanted that day, but I sure didn't point him in the right direction.  My favorite line is that "The Clones may seem like the right choice for rarity, but they'll be so abundantly made that they won't be worth a thing".  The guy bought that completely and left the #6 Clones on the peg.  I hated the long, and drawn out conversation we had...  It was a whole lotta "These are just for kids, but it's easy to make a buck off them too at my table..." kinda crap.  It's amazing who you seem to have to interact with when you're just trying to buy some figures you want.

******* on Spawn boards buys an entire CASE of Clones.

The numbnut. If ya can't wait until everyone else has gotten theirs, at least take a few each from multiple stores.

And anyway, who the heck army builds at $13 a pop???

This is what I did, I got mine from 4 different Targets...it was almost a game at the end to see if how many people working in the Garden department I could "Jedi Mind Trick" into bringing me the figures.  Could have bought a whole case at 3 of the stores...

I did stop at a dozen though, and that is probably 10 more than I will see of Clone #41.

Thanks to the DCPI # and tip from you guys (thanks), I was able to pick up a Target Clonetrooper yesterday.  The full story is detailed in the recent findings thread, but basically I found an employee stocking rubbermaids near the toy section...asked her if she could look up a DCPI for me, and she called to the back and said they were in the stockroom.  She asked how many I wanted, I said one, and she went and picked it up for me.  Looks like a nice figure, haven't opened it up yet, but happy to have one.  I'd like to have more, but at $12.99 each, 1 will have to be enough I think :).

So, who else was stupid enough to get up early at try to find this Clone?

I figured since I saw no pegs for the exclusives for going on two weeks, that my local Target must be waiting for May 8th to put their stock out.

I get there at 8:20 or so, and they hadn't reset the aisle, and of course, there's no ******* Clones.

So I leave disappointed (so much so that I didn't even pick up the AT-TE Gunners that were there) and go to Wal-Mart to see if I can find Thing and Torch from the F4 movie line since I picked up Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman there on Saturday. No luck there either.

So I went home and went back to bed.  Maybe I'll score those Clones this week, but I'll bet they never make it out of the stockroom. I daresay the Lava Vader exclusive was handled better than this disaster.

*Raises hand*

I made the hour drive to the nearest Target and there was no spot for them and the clerk said they were sold out.  Ironically enough I did find the F4 Torch and I also got a Mr. Fantastic at the Savoy Wal-Mart.

I had yet to go to a Target to look for ROTS figures and the Star Wars section had a few signs that said they limited the purchase of Star Wars figures to six and no two can be the same.  Anyone else see signs like this at Target?

That would be me. :)

I'm actually waiting on one to come in the mail from a very kind fellow forum member, but I was curious if my local Target had actually lied to me or if they were being honest (see my story a few pages back in this thread if you care).  I walked in and, as expected, there were no Clones on the pegs.  So, with my crumpled little Post-It with the DCPI number on it, I asked a Target employee (or sales associate, whatever) if they had them.  I related (in a much less wordy manner; imagine that, me being concise) the conversation I had with the girl a week ago, and he punched in the DCPI on his little gun thing and it read as "In stock."

He walked into the back and came out with the same case that the girl had opened a week earlier and it was the same as it was then: completely full of Clones, tissue paper and all.  About that time, the girl I spoke to a week ago came around the corner and said, "I thought I saw you down here!"  She told the guy that today was the day and to go ahead and stock them, but that there was a limit of one figure per customer.  She even moved the basic figures (which had been occupying those Vader pegs) out of the way so he could stock them.  I thanked them profusely and picked up one of them for a friend whose health situation makes it difficult for him to go on regular trips to Target.

At the time I left, there were 11 Clones hanging on the pegs and a (theoretical) safeguard in place to make sure Ebay didn't all of a sudden see 11 more Clone auctions later this afternoon. :)

So, even though it's probably the exception to the rule, I was not lied to, karma won out, and Target (my local one, anyway) provided yet another reason why I'll continue to shop there and why the WM down the street can keep its mountain of Vader Voice Changer helmets.

I hava a crummy story about the Traget Clone...I went to Target on Saturday night around 9:00 to get some formula for the baby.  Naturally, I look to see if there are any new figures, or even the exclusive.  Jackpot!  I find #37-44 inclusing the SA Clone. I saw no exclusives.  Anyway, after  getting the baby's stuff, I head to checkout.  I would never consider shopping on a Saturday night a family event, but I guess many do.  The place was mobbed.  Each register was abut 10 carts deep.

After 15 minutes in line, I buy all of my stuff and head out.  On my way to the doors I spot carts full of returns, and a Target Clone sitting on top.  I look at the lines again.  They're just too long to wait in again.  I stand there for a moment and try to figure out what to do.  Honestly, I considered trying to walk out with it.  But I chucked it back on the returns and went home.

So, maybe I'll never have one, but I have my dignity!! ;D

I already had the Clone, but I woke up early hoping to find 41-44.  And I didn't.  At the 4 targets I went to I ran into more than one obvious nascar guy who was looking for the clone and only the clone.

At one store, the SECOND we walked through the front door of the store, two guys say to us 'okay guys, what's the deal on this exclusive star wars thing?'

Translation:  I know jack **** about SW, could care less about SW, but am out here at the crack of dawn looking for a potentially rare collectible I can make a quick buck off of.

We just politely told him that they all got sold about 2 weeks ago and that there wasn't any point looking - if nothing else, just trying to throw him off the trail.

The 2 Targets I hit here in MN I did not see any of the new 41-44 stuff. I was able to pick up the repacked Anakin with Dooku sword, and after calling a couple stores I was able to land the Operation table Darth Vader and Yoda with Dragonfly.

I was. But I did get a clone. We had to ask an employee, luckily we hadthe DCPI number. He went in the back and brought out a case, the store only got one case in the shippment, by the time eveyone got theirs there were 3 left. And the guy, who was a manager, told us they are only getting one more shippment. So lucky for me I don't have to worry anymore.

Oh and on a happy note, there were 2 scalpers there waiting while my friend yodafan2, on these boards, went into the back with the manager, they thought that he left and there were no clones. So the scalpers left 30 seconds before the clones were brought out, so the scalpers didn't get ****. ;D :)

There is a report on RS that there will be a second wave of these shipped to Target - however, from talking with my friend who works for Hasbro, he thinks that the Target exclusive will be a rolling exclusive of differently painted clones. So for example, while these are the clones that are serving under Commander Neyo, we might next see the Red & Blue Shocktrooper Clones.

Although I definitely want more Clonetrooper color/squad variations, enough with the exclusives already.  This one, while overpriced, was kind of neat...but I don't want to be paying $13 every time we want a different Clone.  Plus, why limit themselves that way?  You know these would sell in bunches, even if sold everywhere instead of being limited to Target.

I may be a little too critical of those who are actually buying these things at 2.5x the fair price because I'm a customizer.  I already have made several of each of 5 color/decor variants of clone troopers because I bought about 70 EIII clones thus far.  I'm good enough at it now that you can just barely tell the difference between one of my paint jobs, and one of Hasbro's.  The main reason I collect Star Wars if for troop building and battle dioramas.  I already have Felucia grunts, Red Coruscants shock troopers, Blue 501st special ops, Neyo's grunts, and Commander Bly.  So I'm not really driven to shell out $14 per figure, especially when I usually buy upwards of 50 of each army builder (gotta love the wookiee army, whew).  But guys, in all seriousness, if you keep supporting this bull**** everytime Hasbro makes an "exclusive" figure at 2-3x the fair price, especially if it's an army builder, you're really helping to kill the hobby the same way Topps slaughtered baseball card collecting in 1993.  This has got to stop.

Because they would take up valuable space in case assortments that could otherwise be used for reshipping the first two Obi-Wans, Anakins, and Yodas.   ::)

(even though I'm being sarcastic, I'm sure someone at Hasbro does think this way...just look at the future case assortments in Collection 1 for later this summer)

I'm all for more Clones with unique paint jobs, but I think Target and Hasbro are kidding themselves if they think we'll keep paying $13 a piece for these.  Once is okay, I can usually accept that when dealing with exclusives.  But if they repeat this again and again, I think they'll find that people will simply refuse to keep  doing so.

Look - it may not happen - but from what he knows there is supposed to be a set of pegs for a Target $12.99 exclusive from 4/2 on through the end of August.

The information he has, indicated first Lava Vader, then the Clone/Stormtrooper and then a refresh Clone/Stormtrooper - now the third item could just be these exact same clones shipped again, but he told me his best guess is that it will be a differently designed clone.

It is a slap in the face - he doesn't like it any more than we do since he's a collector himself.

Hopefully it will mean just more of Commander Neyo's grunt.

I'll send a shiny new nickel to someone talented in Photoshop if they can do up a cut and paste job of a Target Clone with an "Ebay Exclusive" sticker on it.   ;D

I'll send you a shiny new quarter if you also email this to Hasbro and LFL and point out how this is what is happening with these exclusive figures.

A dollar will go to the first person to photoshop the stereotypical comic shop guy holding said Ebay exclusive and bag of Cheetos at the same time.   :D

Yes, I'm being silly (I'm not joking about the nickel or the quarter or the dollar though, folks, so have at it), but Hasbro likes to live in their little ivory tower in Pawtucket (doors held together securely by those twist ties and little clear rubber bands, of course) and believe that their responsibilities for the toys end when they leave the warehouse.  I think it's about time that they have to face facts that even if they're not the ones selling them, they are the ones making them, and they should be held accountable for the scarcity of products.

Like everyone else, I want different colored clones. I don't even care if they're an exclusive, although full release would be preferable. Just don't make it 2 1/2 times normal price for a paint variation 'cuz I won't bite. Doing it even once is pushing it, but multiple times is just rubbing salt in. If this plan comes to fruition there is almost zero chance any of these variants will ever be redone at a normal price point with normal distribution.

The overall concept is fine, but these should be $6 and be available in massive quantities since HELLO they are army builders. Clearly Hasbro will make more money selling 20 $6 figures than a handful of $13 ones.

Yakface has something that you can print out on label paper and attach to the Clone of your choice.

They have a few different colors too. Once I get the Photoshop part figured out, I think I'll print off a few for my Clones.

It's not painted on, but it will do for those of us who don't have any exclusive Clones.
Title: Re: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper

You can print on water-transfer decals as well with the right materials.  Water-transfers, for the uninitiated, are the dealies that came with model kits that you cut out, would soak in water, they'd transfer, and "set".

If you go ape**** with it, you can buy solutions that actually have the stuff bond to the pourous surfaces of plastics and stuff.  (It's good to be a customizer with model building experience. :P )

Erik Schroeder's had a set of "shoulder" and "helmet" emblems from the classic trilogy up at his site for years, and they work great with water-transfer if you get the right paper and stuff.  Very helpful for those of us who have shakey hands (myself included).

When I got mine at the Target in Brick, NJ - I had an inkling that there was going to be trouble when the case that came from the back came out 1/2 gone.

I hate to say it but I did warn everyone that they shouldn't leave w/o a fight with regards to these things being brought out from the stock room.

I would guarantee that at least 60% of all eBay auctions for this figure are currently being run by sellers who work or have a friend who works at Target.

I did buy 3 but none were for me--one went to Scott and two for Jeff to pass along to Morgbug--and all three were before the release.

I found eight on May 2nd; I bought one since our local meetup was coming up and I knew somebody would want one. Then I was asked to pick up 2 for Morgbug if possible. I went back the next day ... lo and behold the remaining seven were gone. I'm sure it was the work of scalpers -- how else would seven $13 figures have disappeared within 24 hours of my post in the store reports? ::)

It worked out OK because I called another nearby Target, and the extremely helpful employee found some in the back and held 2 for me at Customer Service where I picked them up Wednesday night.

As she was ringing up my figures the Customer Service clerk and I were chatting about Star Wars. At one point she asked, "By the way, isn't there supposed to be an exclusive figure coming out tomorrow?" I pointed to the clones and said simply, "That's them." "Ah," she said, and continued ringing them up. I wanted to elaborate, "So technically you shouldn't be selling me these" but for once I managed to keep my trap shut. Good thing, too. ;D

I got six total - I'm keeping two un-opened and I was planning on opening the other four to build a mini-squad for Commander Neyo (should he ever get released as a figure) - I haven't opened 2 of those 4 yet - should I feel guilty about opening four of them when so many people have had to go without?

The funny thing is, according to the comic, all of Neyo's grunts have helmets like him.  This leaves us wondering what exactly this Target clone is supposed to be.  Final answer will come May 19th....

I managed to grab three last night.  The wife went to Target on Sunday, of course I told her to check for these.  (even had a copy of the UPC to give her).  None were at the store, but was told they were in transit.  She gave them her name and they hold them for her.  She called last night to confirm they were in and we went to pick them up.  I was expecting the clerk to bring me the two I asked for, instead he brings out a whole case, still sealed.  So I grabbed three - one for me, another one for someone who asked me to pick him up one if I saw it and an extra, either for myself if I decide I want it or for trade bait.  I asked the clerk if the rest were going on the shelf and he said yes.  The funny thing is there was no tags for these in the toy aisle, so I don't know where they're going to put them.

On one level it is simply a 3-3/4" version of the 12" Clonetrooper - they both share the same markings.

With regards to the Comic Book - the part where Chewie, Tarrful and Yoda fight their way past Gree's clones, it gives the impression that all of Gree's clones look just like the BARC Trooper - so we won't know really for sure until the 19th - which as my wife pointed out to me yesterday will be a week away from tomorrow!!!!  :o ;D

I came across these again today (thanks to a tip from Mike - Thanks Mike!  ;)) and was able to pick one up with the "new" third style Clamshell case.

Why they had to change the Clamshell?  Beats me.  Are the little "emblems" on the "lock" really that important?   :-\

Jeff - you mean different from Vader and the 5-pack of cases clamshell or different from previous releases of the SA Clone?

It is a third style clamshell case.

Style 1 - came with the Lava Vader and Target 5-packs
Style 2 - came with the Clone Trooper.  It has Vader Emblems on the "Locks".
Style 3 - came with the Clone Trooper.  It had Clone Emblems on the "Locks".

Someone reported somewhere around here, but I can't remember who it was.   :-[

I can take a better picture when I get home tonight, but for now this image (borrowed from GalacticHunter) should clear up what I mean:

You can see the first case the Clone came in had "firey crosses" on the locks of the case, the same emblems that were on the lock-nubs of the Vader case.  The new version of the Clone Trooper case has what looks like a laser bolt of something on the little locking nubs at the top.

The only way I got one was from my friend Dan.  He saw a guy we talked to on 4/2 at Wal-mart one night.  That guy told Dan he just bought 4 of the clones at Target.  Dan called me from Target asking for the DCPI number.  The Target employee told Dan that was the only way he would be able to find it in the stockroom.  I looked it up and Dan bought 2 of them.  One for himself and one for me.

I agree this is the dumbest way to handle an exclusive.  It's even worse than how Lava Vader was handled.  The price for both figures is insane.

Post by: Pete_Fett on May 11, 2005, 02:15 PM
Thanks for the clarification Jeff - I had no idea that variation even existed. To be honest, it seems kinda lame if you ask me. Perhaps the emblems on the locks interfered with the whole "Break the Emperors Code" thing and they didn't want people to be confused?

Anway - I'm not going to loose sleep over not having the second version of the "locks" - packaging variations just aren't THAT important to me.

I had a chance to open up the Target Clone that I picked up last week, and it is a nice figure.  But, looking at it, to me it definitely isn't worth $13.  I mean, more power to those of you who are building an army of these things, that is most definitely your choice....and it is a nice figure, but I guess I just get a little mad that Hasbro/Target/whoever deems this a $13 figure where it should be $5-6 (or maybe even $7-8 for being an exclusive).  Nice figure, but a bit pricey.

Here's some "insight" into the Target Pricing on these...

Hasbro is basically comparing these figures to the vOTC - a Basic Figure with Clamshell Packaging.  The Hasbro MSRP they showed at C3 was $10 and that's consistent with what they are charging Target for these (ie the cases of these cost approx the same per figure as the vOTC did).

If you remember, Target started out at $10.99 on the vOTC until Wal-Mart forced them to price-match down to $10.  In addition, a few of my Target sources basically admitted that Target bumped up the price a bit to the $12.99 because they KNOW collectors will pay it.

Target has been known to charge more for exclusive items in the past (Accessory Packs for $15, $40 for the B-Wing) and when it comes right down to it, as others have said, you don't see these sitting around very long do you?  Even at $13 they disappear pretty quick.   Lava Vader sucked as a figure, especially at $13, but when it's all said and done, they sold them all...  :-\

So, in summary:
The vOTC showed them (Target) we'd pay $11 for a figure and Lava Vader showed them we'd pay $13 for a figure

Not only did we (collectors) show them we'd buy at those prices, we're still showing them by buying up Lava Vader and the Clone.

Anyway, you can blame the $13 price tag on Target.  Hasbro wanted to charge you $10 (because of the clam-shell), but Target is the one that is sticking it to you...

On a semi-related note, TRU had the opportunity to put Holo Yoda in a case but apparently they chose not to to "keep the price down"... and then they went ahead and charged $10 for the figure anyway.   ::)

Jeff makes very valid points.   Start with and exclusive figure, add in the clamshell and then add in the whole army building culture that's pervasive in the collecting community and it's no wonder that the Target exclusive Clone Trooper has been so hot.  We only have ourselves to blame for the situation, I think.  It was only a matter of time before both Hasbro and an exclusive retailer decided that the army builders were ripe for the picking.

Looks like today's the day, around Atlanta at least. Its been a clone invasion at Targets all over the city, and not just the exclusive - #41's stocked, along with 42, 43, and 44.  There are so many exlusives - some local reports have literally dozens in some stores, with more in the back - that it does seem these won't be scalper fodder for long.

There are currently 814 Target Exclusive clone troopers on Ebay at this moment.

I personally witnessed someone come sweeping by me in the star wars aisle at Target tonight and pick up all 6 of the 12.99 clone troopers on the pegs while I was inspecting paint jobs on the new wookiee warrior figure.  I wanted none of the 12.99 clone, and stuck to it.  R-I-P-O-F-F.
Title: Re: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper

Saw a ton tonight, and later too (not likely JUST put on the pegs) of 15+ of the Target Clone...  I'm thinking either the novelty is wearing off or the figure is just starting to saturate enough to sit still a while.

Like my post elsewhere...  The Target Clone hides under the "exclusive" title a little better than the EE sets, but the reality is that he's as easy to build an army with as those EE sets, which isn't too easy.  At $10+ per figure you're looking at maybe getting a nice squad together, or a little team, but not much better than that unless you have a lotta $$$.

The VOTC Stormie faired better at this price I think because of it being a classic trilogy figure...  Nostalgia drives people to funny behavior. :)

If Hasbro would do the variants in army builder sets at basic retail ($15 - $20 for 3 figs), I'd be ok with that...  That's the route to go I think, and I think it'd have greater success over a longer period of time, but that's my opinion.

As for its rarity, it appears that a large number of the Clones have hit the shelves at many Targets in the last couple days, so it should be easier to find now.

And ebay as well.  Last week there were 300 Target clones on ebay.  Today there are over 800.  I do not think they are rare, many of us collectors aren't going to pay 12.99 for SA Trooper #41 with some paint on it.

Yeah I've seen a ton now at retail...  I wouldn't call it rare anymore, but it's amazing what people can do to a single area if they have the means to buy up all the stock.

Right now, my area seems to have had plenty of the Clones in and now some seem to sit a little due to the price.

I hadn't heard about the Target logo being proposed for the details either, but it makes sense.  Heck, even the detailing that is on the one available is similar enough to what a SW-esque Target logo would be if you think about it.

I have a feeling that if WM had an exclusive like this, their logo wouldn't be on it, but it would be able to do the squiggley dance.   ;D

And to further this humor...

-The K-Mart Clone would be badly painted, smell kind of funny, and would sit in an unopened case on the pallet for six months buried under a pile of X2 movie figures.

-The Kay Bee Clone would be the Target Clone with a big KB sticker over the Target logo on his chest.

-The FAO Schwarz Clone would not exist.  :o

-The Meijer Clone would come with a fifth of Jim Beam, a car battery, a gallon of gas, a pair of boxer shorts, a half pound of ground beef, a fishing rod, and a prescription for Xanax.

-The Brian's Toys Clone would be all of the above "acquired directly from Hasbro" with the WM/KB/TRU/Target pricetag affixed to the bubble in the photos.  But they're just samples, we swear.

-You'd never get the KebCo Clone you paid for.

-Sears Clone would only be available in the holiday season for a brief time, plus its packaging would be trashed, and thanks to their deal with KB they'd be the exact same stuff KB has.

(Or it would be a Clone in "Tough Skins"...   :D  That joke hit home for anyone here?)

-J.C. Penney Clone would only be able to be ordered through their catalogue center, and it would cost exactly 25% more than what Hasbro told them to sell it for.  This is because JCP has a 25% off sale every weekend that's touted as the biggest sale they've ever had.  (I worked there on my externship, that place is funny...  Eye-opening to a 19 year old to work there and see how they're run from the corporate level on down).

-Diamond Comics Clone would come with a "Gotcha By The Balls" feature where the Clone looked like the comic book guy from the Simpsons, and the MSRP just had ???'s beside it for the various different shop's convenience....

Oh yeah, and then it would wind up at stores like Suncoast of course.

This figure is officially considered "expanded universe."  It was not in the film, and only the film is canon.

Now, the funny thing is, with all of these I saw on the pegs over the past few weeks, I wouldn't have even bought them for $5.99!  I'm glad a non-movie expanded universe figure wound up being the exclusive so I didn't have to bend over and take it up the poop chute from Target.

Eh, I still consider the figure one of Neyo's grunts.

On Utapau, there were grunts with both style helmets:

The "medic" Clone has the Neyo style helmet.

I just figure the same was true for Neyo - that is, he had some of these Target Clones off doing something else while he was tracking down and killing Stass with the other style helmet clones...  :P

Either that, or it's entirely possible that Hasbro got the color sceme and then LFL changed the helmet style after the fact.  It isn't the first time that we got a figure that was slightly different then what we saw on the screen.

Personally, I'm not too worked up about it and I actually like the figure.   :)

That's my point of view too Jeff, that they're the footsoldiers Neyo's got under him...  Whether they're there or not will forever remain a mystery.  They make a nice figure, just a pisspoor price.  I'd take a 3-pack of them for $15 (tucked into the small vehicle assortment or something...  Maybe a special base?) even...

Right now my little "team" are busting in to help my whites out, who've become overrun by a droid assault force.  It looks like Custer's Last Stand, but if he'd been smart enough to wait till some reinforcements were in semi-close proximity.  ;)

I have 2 of these things, one of which is dead, the other about to be pile-driven (pile-drived?) by a Wookiee. I'd love a Neyo figure (in a normal package for a fair price). But in the meantime, they serve under my clone commander; hey, they both have RED on them. :P

Of course, we're all complete tools for even considering this purchase.

I agree, it's just that the phrase "in my little world" translates to "expanded universe."  It's not in the movie, so it's not canon.  Neyo's troops didn't have standard clone helmets in the movie, and therefore, the Target clone is expanded universe.

I know cannon/non-cannon is a debatable beast, but under my own personal view of EU, I don't really agree with you guys' statements there.

Under that reasoning, the visit with Padme's parents in AOTC (on the DVD) is EU. If that's the case, the middle-aged couple and small children following Padme's casket in ROTS could be just strangers, if we've never seen them in final cuts of the movies before and thier names or relations aren't communicated on-screen.

My take is that if it made it through development and was trimmed from the film for pacing reasons, there's no reason to not consider them legit. I could reason that Neyo's troops were designed out as much as any other platoon that was developed for Coruscant, Utupua, or anywhere else. They're just not on screen because they have to reason to be for the story.

Uh, not that I've seen a finished model of the Neyo grunt.  :-\

Yay for the Target Clone, I hope it finds a good home...

On  the issue of canon...  The films themselves are the only true canon, but cutscenes offer a sticky situation.  They are "film" afterall.  They are Lucas's vision, but they're edited out...  I don't know what that entails then.

I've personally looked at cutscene stuff as just being part of the story, however their level of canon's in doubt so I come to the conclusion it's not really canon I guess.  Then again the dialogue Red Leader had with Luke was edited down because it wouldn't jive with the prequals....  That could sorta put a nail in the "Cut-scenes = canon" debate since that's cut from the film, and contradicts the story as well.  I dunno.
Title: Re: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper

IMHO - I say cannon, schmannon... Why not enjoy it all.  Life is too short to be shackled by what is cannon and what isn't.
Title: Re: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper
Post by: Dressel Rebel on June 13, 2005, 11:11 PM
They are Lucas's vision, but they're edited out...

Yeah, edited out of the movie, and only the movie is canon.

Personally, there's nothing wrong with EU.  I myself only like figures that come from the movies more or less, and the Target clone is not in the movie.  The biggest thing about the target clone that kept me from buying it though was the fact that a few suits worked up the balls to charge us $12.99 per figure for an army builder.  That was a kick in the nuts guys.  And what really sucks is that they STILL flew off the shelves.  So you can bet on getting kicked in the nuts again, that's for sure.  And next time, it will be $14.99 - but you guys who bought this will reap what you sow.  And that is, a nice pile of invitations was just sent to Hasbro to rip us off some more and take advantage of our addiction to the hobby.  Research Topps a bit.   At any rate, it's your hard earned money and you can do what you want with it, but this whole episode with Target was really really screwed up, and as a group we swallowed it hook, line and sinker, and are still begging for more.
Title: Re: Target Exclusive Clone Trooper
Post by: Jesse James on June 14, 2005, 12:07 AM
The edited footage is still "film" though...  If it's included in a DVD, one could make that argument that it's as much canon then...  It's Lucas made, Lucas controlled...

I lean towards neither side on the issue right now other than none of the edited stuff bugs me (I'd not mind it being reinserted into a future DVD).

As far as if this will bite us in the ass...  I don't know that it will.

I more fear the EE 4-packs being of greater detriment to army building.  I think there was genuine sentiment that this Target figure would be considered "obscure" enough that people wouldn't go ga-ga to army build it as much...  They don't know their audience inside out is what I've learned.

The EE sets were more a straight forward kick to the nuts in my view...  Army building with them was cost prohibitive (as it is with the Target Clone).  I honestly don't know people who've built a nice army of SA Clones using those EE sets...  Most just got a set of all 4 of the 4-packs, or people went in on cases with people to make the cost just around retail.  Nobody went ape **** and built 100+ figure armies (that I'm aware of).

The Target Clone is the same...  I got a handful from a friend...  The Target Clone didn't fly off the pegs here either.  The reshipment actually sat and slowly dwindled.  I think people just picked some up here and there, and Scalpers (I know when I go to the Toy Show next month that I'm gonna see these for like $25 a figure) bought what they could...

It could've been that a reshipment happened that I saw these sorta stagnate at one point though...  I wouldn't say they pegwarmed by any stretch though...  We'll see how this pans out.  Exclusives always have sorta stung in the price department though...  And they don't tend to sit.  Even the figures that seemed to get a pretty hefty production run like Silver R2's didn't exactly shelf warm and it was costly to get that figure (especially if you bought it outright).

I don't mean to justify the Target Clone...  To me it's as bad an idea for an exclusive as they've had, but I don't think it's gonna mean $15/figure army builders are in our future now, and that Hasbro is going to go out of their way (any more than they already have) to make annoying exclusives at high prices.  This really was the status quo since way back.

Right now I don't know of a definitive listing of pictures/descriptions of the Clones.  It's mostly people pulling images from various sources to prove a point (hehe).

Browse Clone Customs threads in the customizing areas though because they're where I'm seeing a LOT of clone pictures for the first time.  The customizers go nuts for the most obscure images/reference pictures. :)  Clones have been no different in that niche of the hobby, that's for sure.

First of all, I'd like to commend the fine people at JD.com for doing such cool giveaways.  One more reason why this is the best forum/site for SW collectors around.   :)

Okay, getting away from my blatant asskissing, the thing about the cut scenes/canon debate that muddies the issue anymore is that the vast majority of the cut material is actually in the scripts (at least for the prequels).  I finally got to read the official script of ROTS yesterday, and there is A LOT of stuff that we see in the toy line (Senators, in particular) that showed up in the script and was shot/completed but wound up getting cut.  Same thing with AOTC: all of the Padme's family stuff is in the script, was shot, and completed (and then included on the DVD), so how it could be any less "canon" than anything else is beyond me.  That's just my opinion though.

As for the Target Clone, the funny thing is that there is such a fuss over this and the fact that the 12" Clone is the exact same thing is going almost completely unnoticed.  As a 4" Target exclusive I can't see the fuss, considering it was a short run novelty item for one particular retailer (and the paint scheme, you have to admit, is very similar to what you would imagine a Target store on Coruscant would have as its logo, hee hee), while the 12" doll was an open market release and has been seen by a lot more people.

That being said, it's a Clone that has different markings and it would have fit in with the actual film since it was actually developed for the film, so that's good enough for me to have one in my collection.  ;D

Title: Target Clones Return?!?
Post by: Gatillo on August 14, 2005, 09:03 PM
Today at two of my local Targets I found the Target exclusive clones on clearance at 50% off.  Both Targets had 6 clones each and they were case fresh.  They had the first knob on the star case, the one that looks like a lollypop not the star one.  They all had 6.48 stickers and that was what they rang.  I got one at one Target but 2 more when I saw them again.  Originally I thought it was a scalper return but at 2 stores is unlikely.

I know they didn't "fly" here, they just sold steadily...  Maybe their peg got cut out from under them and so they had to go off the shelves and on sale?  That's a weird one and a nice score for those figures.  I'd like a handful at that price.

Title: Re: Target Clones Return?!?
Post by: DoctorPadawan on August 15, 2005, 07:37 PM
Target has always been really weird with clearancing items from my experience.  In the past four years that I have lived near a Target, there have been several things that wound up in their clearance aisle that were never stocked in the regular action figure aisle.

The Clone Wars deluxe figures/three packs, for example, were never stocked at my local Target, but as soon as the post-Xmas clearances began, they had to have thrown about four cases worth into the clearance aisle for 5 bucks apiece (the remnants, mostly Droideka launchers, went down as far as 2 something).  Same deal with the green A-Wing and 12" Leia on Speeder Bike (the latter of which I paid 12 bucks and change for): never stocked on regular shelves, but were still on the clearance aisle.

So, yeah, it doesn't surprise me that some of the Target Clones have begun to make their way out of the back room (also known as "Fort Knox") onto the shelves finally for cheap prices.  If this actually happens around here, I'll definitely grab a few for the people on the board who missed out on it.

The weirdest clearance aisle finds happened about two months ago at a local Wal-Mart, though.  In the space of a week, the following suddenly showed up on the shelves (all have since disappeared):

-Unleashed Han Solo
-Unleashed Chewbacca
-12" Ewoks 2-pack
-12" Jawas 2-pack
-Saga Republic Gunship
-Saga Ayy Vida figure
-Saga Lama Su figure

I just stood and shook my head at them pulling all this out in the midst of the ROTS onslaught.

I don't think the pegs necessarily got cut out, at least not in my area. Up until the beginning of July, all the targets around me still had at least one peg for the Exclusive Clonetrooper, which I found funny, since I had never seen one up until last week when I picked one up for trading (still available people, check my trade post  :P). I think it might be a case of extra stock coming out of a warehouse and getting pushed off to various stores, though how those stores are determined is a mystery since the findings seem to be hit and miss.

Some of these hit here in Mid Michigan about three weeks back. They weren't marked down however, and it took about five days to sell them. Still, pretty cool to see `em in the store since I had missed the original release.

In my area the pegs actually got phased out.  Like they expected a higher sales rate, but then they just didn't get it so the figs took up a deluxe peg instead during a little shifting of pegs/resetting.  That's at the 3 Targets I can hit reasonably often...   :-\  This has been a bit of a weird instance.  Hope some at the site here were able to find some good deals with this figure.  I know I'd like to have built a nice group of this Clone type for cheap.

Intriguing....

The new Hyperspace interview with Karen Traviss and Ryan Kaufman focusing on the clone troopers (http://www.starwars.com/hyperspace/member/insideronline/84/indexp2.html) includes a "movie-style" pic of the Target trooper.

It's in the same style as many of the publicity shots you've seen in the Databank, Visual Dictionary, and elsewhere, with the CGI clone model posed against a blank grey background. Only difference this time is that it has the infamous Target trooper logos.

Click here to see it (must be logged in to Hyperspace to view):
